Places You Won’t Believe Are In Malaysia Desertscape in the Sahara, or man-made sand dunes in Klebang, Melaka? Blessed with beautiful nature and amazing scenery, Malaysia is home to many places that look right out of postcards from overseas. We’ve listed five stunning spots in the country that look like foreign destinations – or another world altogether.

Happily Ever After Everyone loves a good fairytale: the action, the adventure, the princesses being rescued from their towers, and the princes and knights in shining armour battling wicked sorcerers, witches and dragons. Although they don’t exist in real life, one can still visit the stunning castles around the world that have inspired generations of legends, myths and folklore.

FROM THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF

goingplacesmagazine.com | 8 | July 2018

Dear Guests, It is a pleasure to have you onboard. Malaysia Airlines has long been the home of Malaysian Hospitality (MH) and we continue to hold firm to the values and principles encapsulated within MH, in delivering service from the heart. With our footing firmly anchored to our Malaysian values, we hope that each and every one of you leave with wonderful memories of your on-ground and onboard experience with us. We have and will continue to invest heavily in improving our products and services to serve you better. I am happy to note that our overall Customer Satisfaction Index scores have shown positive improvement over the last few months. MH teams across our network have been working hard to improve and to enhance our services and this is starting to show positive traction. Our customers, you, are the lifeblood of our organisation. This is why hearing from you has never been more important to us. We have made it much easier for you to share your input with us through the introduction of the MHfeedback application which allows you to provide us with real-time feedback and to rate your experience. Other notable improvements to our services include the newly launched MH Self Service Portal or MH SSP, which allows customers to obtain flight disruption confirmation letters (download, e-mail or print) for travel insurance claims from just 48 hours after the affected flight, to check on travel documents and health requirements of your travel destination and to lodge mishandled baggage claims electronically. The scope of this MH SSP application will be expanded further to cover more functions in the coming months. Our teams are also hard at work to design other innovative applications to make travel for you more seamless and convenient. In our continuous effort to deliver Malaysian Hospitality in everything we do, we remain steadfast in breaking new grounds in terms of product and service improvements across all our customer touchpoints. Our lounges and menus have been refreshed to reflect more of our Malaysian heritage and culture and our aircraft cabin interiors will follow suit very soon. It is all about providing you, our customers, an enhanced and improved flight and ground experience with us. To demonstrate and make good on this promise, I am also pleased to share with you that we have created a new division within the organisation to oversee and champion Customer Experience across every touchpoint. We are both serious and committed in our promise to provide you with products and services that are next to none. I take this opportunity to thank you for choosing Malaysia Airlines and wish you the best of Malaysian Hospitality, no matter where you are flying in the world. ■

Sekinchan in Selangor, less than two hours’ drive from the capital Kuala Lumpur, where I live. Sekinchan is famous for its lush paddy fields and of course, cheap and delicious seafood. This would be an easy day-trip to take, something that doesn’t require spending too much time on the road.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 10 | July 2018

But if you’re blessed with time and money on your hands, then do take a longer road trip to discover the beauty of some places on earth. One country that offers such mind-blowing natural beauty that the only way to experience it is by taking a road trip is New Zealand. Its dramatic scenery with colossal mountain ranges, golden plains and famed forests are the reasons why it was chosen as the location for the filming of both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Ten of the Middle Earth locations really exist in New Zealand, but even if you are not a Ringer, you will still be bowled over by the country’s stunningly diverse landscapes.

Julie Goh Editor

“Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before,” author H. Jackson Brown said in his book Life’s Little Instruction Book: 511 Suggestions, Observations, and Reminders On How To Live A Happy and Rewarding Life. The title is a mouthful but his suggestion is a gem. It doesn’t have to be a far off place and you certainly don’t have to spend a lot of money to do it. It could be the next little town that you’ve been meaning to visit. But I would add to Mr Brown’s advice by saying you should consider going on a road trip because sometimes, the journey is as rewarding as the destination. I’ve been meaning to do a road trip to the quaint fishing village of

And for this reason, we’ve come up with a list of the eight best road trips to take, both on the North and South islands of New Zealand. Writer Alexandra Wong’s narration of the road trips is so descriptive, you can almost imagine yourself driving down one of its winding mountain roads, with the windows of your campervan down and feeling the wind in your face. It’s bound to make for an epic journey. But why is it important to go someplace different once a year? Because it’s good for the soul. It breaks up the routine of your everyday life and it gets you out of your comfort zone. And what’s there not to get excited about seeing places you’ve never seen before or experiencing a culture different from yours? You might even discover a new thing or two about yourself. With careful planning, a road trip can be as expensive or as budget-friendly as you want it to be. The most important thing is to get out there and do it. And do it soon. Safe travels and see you next month. ■

THE MAIL ROOM

Letter Of The Month I couldn’t help but smile as I picked up your April issue. My fondest introduction to the world of aviation was always awaiting the return of my father from his business trips, almost always within Sarawak itself. Mom would always remind him to bring back a copy of Going Places. This was a time before the Internet and the monthly issues of Going Places gave an insight into the world of travel. In a way, reading it today, flying with my fiancée as we relocate from our work base in Kerteh to Bintulu, it feels as though life has come full circle, triggering hopes that in the very near future, my own son would await me at the airport as I return from a business trip. The ordeal of our relocation over the past month has created an array of experiences with Malaysia Airlines, from the cabin crew to MASkargo as we relocated our pet dog, to this morning’s check-in personnel. We have met only the friendliest of Malaysia Airlines staff. Here’s a thumbs-up and a big thank you to all for being living proof of what Malaysian Hospitality is all about. Keep up the good work and I’ll be looking forward to reading next month’s Going Places. GRAHAM TAN, Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia

goingplacesmagazine.com | 12 | July 2018

Whenever I travel with Malaysia Airlines, I have always enjoyed reading Going Places. During a trip in May, the month’s U.K.-themed issue which featured the British royal family was timely with the much anticipated royal wedding of HRH Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on 19 May. Growing up in Malaysia where the country was once under the British rule, it is inevitable that we will be influenced somewhat by what goes on there. I’m an avid fan of the British royal family from Queen Elizabeth to the latest addition to the family, Prince Louis. I’m always on the lookout for stories and updates related to them. The royal wedding preview provided a good depth of details on the what and the where of the much-awaited event, not forgetting the structured guide for the must-visit places around Windsor and Eton. Thank you Going Places for whetting my reading appetite and for being a good companion onboard. ADELINE SENG, Melaka, Malaysia

After a long break, I recently took Malaysia Airlines for my flight to Delhi. I was happy with the overall service and surprised at the same time with the nice vegetarian food, the attentive flight attendants and the competitive airfare. Being a writer myself, I took a look at Going Places and found the articles featured to be entertaining and informative. The stories are helpful to get a better picture of a place or a tradition. Thank you for making my long flight enjoyable! WAHYUNI KAMAH, Jakarta, Indonesia

Sky High Dining

You don’t have to travel all the way to Texas for barbecue now that The Burnin’ Pit has opened up in Desa Sri Hartamas in Kuala Lumpur. Opened by self-taught restaurateur and pit master Kok Fung, The Burnin’ Pit prides itself on its slow-smoked Australian beef brisket and ribs, which take anywhere from eight to 14 hours to cook under low heat, until it becomes meltingly soft and fork-tender. If there’s one thing you have to try, however, it’s their wagyu beef brisket – a slice of it costs two to three times more than an order of regular brisket, but you’ll be more than happy to pay the bill once you’ve had your fill.

For dinner with a grand view of KL’s city skyline, pay a visit to Cielo Kuala Lumpur. Located on the rooftop of VIDA Bukit Ceylon, the restaurant and bar is operated by the same folks behind Changkat Bukit Bintang mainstays such as The Whisky Bar, El Cerdo and Opium. Cielo specialises in simple and classically prepared seafood dishes that bring out the best from fresh fishes like turbot, mackerel and monkfish from France, as well as marinated king salmon from New Zealand and Canadian live lobster. Aside from the mains, they also serve a selection of caviar, live oysters and cheeses from around the world.

Located in Damansara Heights, JungleBird is known for its wide selection of rums, while Bangsar-based Coley is known for its selection of ‘koktels’ – cocktail creations that feature familiar Malaysian ingredients like air mata kucing, asam boi and barley water.

Have a grand day out in Tunbridge Wells, which will host the next installment of Tom Kerridge’s Pub in the Park festival from 6 to 8 July. Brothers United The Moco Museum in Amsterdam is known for featuring the ‘rock stars’ of modern contemporary art, those who challenge the status quo and whose work is often controversial. Running parallel with the permanent Banksy exhibition this month, the museum presents Icy and Sot: A Moment of Clarity, a street art exhibition from brothers Icy and Sot, who together are known as the “Banksy of Iran”. A Moment of Clarity is a collection of the pair’s most poignant and controversial works. Indeed, the social commentary and criticism present in their street art has led to it being forbidden in their home country, but the pair have since found sanctuary in New York. Body Of Work

The Arts Club located in the heart of London has been a hub for arts and culture since 1863, and while a club for private members, it also hosts exhibitions for the public. This month, the venue presents Hyper-real, a group photography exhibition that explores the obsession with photo-editing and digital enhancement. Photoediting tools have become integral to Western society, with social media platforms such as Instagram spawning celebrities purely based on the quality of their photographs. Hyper-real gathers several photographers, including Hank Willis Thomas and Roe Ethridge, who play with the artifice of digital enhancement, blurring the line between what is real and what is fictional. Amidst selfie-culture and issues of body-positivity, the exhibition couldn’t have been better timed and offers an insight into the editing software that plays a huge part in shaping our reality.

This summer, the Tate Britain in London hosts a landmark exhibition that’s a must-see for fans of life-drawing and portraiture. All Too Human: Bacon, Freud and a Century of Painting Life explores how life is depicted in art and gathers over 100 works from Britain’s most celebrated modern artists. Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon are at the heart of this exhibition with many rare pieces from both artists on display, offering visitors an insight into their approach and methods over the years. Freud once said, “I want the paint to work as flesh does”, and over time, his depictions of models became increasingly unflinching, visceral and sculptural. Bacon, however, drew inspiration from the photography of John Deakin, whose images of friends and couples served as the catalyst for many of his works. Showcasing alongside Bacon and Freud are several esteemed modern artists such as Paula Rego, Michael Andrews and Frank Auerbach, making the exhibition a thoroughly researched and exciting one.

Light Viewing American artist Mary Corse‘s first solo museum exhibition, A Survey In Light is underway at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. Corse came to prominence in the 1960s as one of the few women involved in the West Coast Light and Space movement. She has since continued to experiment with the idea that light can be both a subject of art as well as a material. While her contemporary West Coast Light and Space enthusiasts ventured into sculpture, Corse focused on painting. The Whitney will present several of her key pieces, looking at how her work has evolved to incorporate different ‘painting tools’ such as plexiglass, metallic flakes and clay.

WINDOW OR AISLE

Superheroes goingplacesmagazine.com | 30 | July 2018

My favourite superhero movie is The Incredibles because at least that family uses their super powers for truly useful things like rescuing a cat stuck up a tree. All the other superheroes only ever concern themselves with the really big things like, say, saving our planet from attacks by evil beings from evil dimensions who want to enslave all mankind. And that sort of thing hardly ever happens. What do super heroes do with all that spare time when the planet is not under attack? Superman does save people from burning buildings but eventually he would get bored because it would barely challenge his amazing powers. If superheroes really did exist, then eventually they would enslave us all because, well, how else are they going to have some fun? We need real superheroes who can solve reallife problems like Alleviating Chronic Back Pain Man or Will Patiently Listen To You And Tell You That They Are The Problem And Don’t You Dare Change Anything Because You’re Already Perfect The Way You Are Woman. There’s a movie superhero called Hawkeye who fires lots of arrows and I simply cannot understand how that could be of any use since the invention of gunpowder. But if firing arrows was merely his hobby and his actual super skill was as Forensic Accountancy Man with the ability to unravel what happened to our building’s sinking fund, then that would be useful. Ninety-nine percent of superhero movies involve them saving the planet or the universe from complete destruction. And then there’s a big fight at the end and they save us. All superhero movies should be called Hulk Smash because

that is always what happens in the end. I watched them all (because you have to) but I do find myself yearning for a simple tale about a shark attacking three men on a boat. And then Black Panther came along. Despite all the hype Black Panther isn’t the greatest film of all time but if you haven’t seen it yet, then you really should because it attempts something far bigger than all the other Hulk Smash movies. Black Panther is set in an isolated African country called Wakanda, which, remarkably among all African countries seems to be the only one to have escaped the ravages of 19th century European colonialism (it is a fiction, after all). Wakanda hides a secret of incredible technology but in the movie its traditional leadership is dethroned and they must decide whether or not to share their bounty with the rest of the world. What makes Black Panther remarkable is that it’s just about the only big budget Hollywood movie where Americans are neither the heroes nor the saviours and where Africans are not portrayed as mere victims. Instead, Africans (albeit fictional Africans) are the heroes. They have the power to make their own choices and theirs is not a story of victimhood. The threat to Wakanda’s peaceful and secretly prosperous existence comes not from outside but from within with the return of a prodigal son (the excellent Michael B. Jordan), whose orphaned life has been tempered by the bitter betrayals of the black American story. Alongside all the usual and fairly forgettable fighting and smashing, Black Panther truly

works as allegory: for the gulf in understanding between black America and Africa, between the West and the developing world or between the 1960s civil rights militancy of Malcolm X and the non-violence of Martin Luther King. Black Panther is a fiction that neither can nor should rewrite the history of colonialism in Africa, but it does work as a 21st century inspiration and corrective by super-empowering non-white characters with the strengths that are normally associated with a Captain America or the billionaire inventor of Iron Man. It’s no wonder that Black Panther received such a rapturous reception around the developing world. Soon superhero movies will be the only movies and I’m already getting confused because I’m beginning to think that superheroes are real. I’m worried that I might find myself re-watching Gandhi and wondering why he doesn’t just get Home Rule for India by defeating the British with his superpower cotton thread. I’m already yearning for the simpler times when sharks used to eat boats or when superheroes used to rescue a cat stuck up a tree. ■

Beach Don’t Kill My Vibe Stretching 30 kilometres along the coast of the Red Sea, the Jeddah Corniche is one of the most iconic landmarks of the city, featuring pavilions, mosques, picnic areas and more importantly, the King Fahad Fountain. The corniche is equipped with Wi-Fi, charging stations, food shacks, state-ofthe-art lavatories and restrooms, walkways, and playgrounds for children. For The Kids The 60,000-square-metre Al Shallal Theme Park is every child’s dream come true, with arcade games, skating rinks and an Amazon jungle ride complete with life-sized animal figures and special effects. But best of all, it has the largest double-loop roller coaster in the Asian continent. Witness The Nightlife Jeddah is undergoing a transition to become more modernised and open-minded. Nightlife in Jeddah revolves around dining out, shopping, rambling along the Corniche or chatting over a shisha. The city has plenty of shisha venues and coffee bars that serve traditional Arabic tea and coffee. Cinemas are set to open soon in Jeddah. For The Calendar Jeddah has several fun festivals and fairs spread throughout the year. Visit roznamah.sa for the complete listing of events, including the International Book Fair every December. Around 500 Arab and international publishers from over 40 countries take part in the fair, showcasing upcoming works from around the region as well as

the depth and breadth of Saudi literature. Jeddah Ghair, a summer festival, is one of the largest internationally oriented cultural and tourist events in Saudi Arabia, attracting over five million visitors who come to enjoy activities such as racing, live music and impressive fireworks. King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) Situated on the west coast of the Red Sea, KAEC covers 181 square kilometres of land, approximately the size of Washington DC. It is just an hour’s drive from Jeddah and sets the benchmark for the development of modern communities, including restaurants and cafés, parks and beaches. KAEC is the epicentre of entertainment and events during weekends.

STAY Where Elegant Meets Exotic The city is home to international hotel chains such as Marriott, Radisson Blue, Sheraton, Sofitel, Hilton, Holiday Inn, InterContinental, Park Hyatt and more. For art lovers, Assila is Jeddah’s only art-inspired resort. A luxurious sanctuary housing over 2,000 original works by Saudi artists, walking through its halls feels like browsing through an art gallery. For a stroll along pristine beaches and to relax in secluded villas, head to Movenpick al Nawras. Get Recharged Take a break from being a tourist and get pampered at any of the top spas in town. Awaken the senses with a wide range of therapeutic treatments and relaxing massages at Assila, Waldolf Astoria or Park Hyatt.

EAT & SHOP Where To Eat? Jeddah is a haven for foodies. From fine dining restaurants to budget-

friendly street food and cafés, the options are endless. For a taste of authentic Hejazi food, head to Thamarath or Ful21 Restaurant. At the popular budget-friendly Al-Baik, get the metre-long kebab barbecued to your taste, then finish off your meal with an Ottoman kunafa dessert. For authentic Lebanese cuisine, head to Byblos, and for traditional Middle Eastern fare, go to Al Nakheel. If you’re craving delicious French pastries, go to Layla’s Gourmet, and to Piatto for Italian fare. Head To The Souks Souq al-Alawi is the largest, home to a warren of fascinating stalls selling just about everything imaginable. Wander through the

colourful universe of the famous market, where scarves and abayas in amazing colours, jewellery of coral, leather bags and sandals are jumbled up with aromatic coffee beans, Arabic fragrances, oils, dates, and spices. Souq al-Nada in Al-Balad is the main place for exquisite jewellery of gold and silver. For The Brand-Conscious Jeddah has scores of malls. The large and impressive ones are Mall of Arabia and Red Sea Mall. As Oxford Street is the hub for shopping in London, Tahlia Street is for Jeddah, the place to visit for high-end international brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Versace and others.

Travel Tips

AWAY FROM THE CITY Way Up High Located in the mountains, Ta’if is a popular summer holiday spot about two hours by car from Jeddah. A fertile region known for its rose farms, grapes, pomegranates and honey production, there are plenty of things to see and do in Ta’if. Ride the cable car to the top of the mountain in Al Hada or spend time at the Al Rudaf Park, a large grassy park with interesting rock formations and a small zoo, and the site of a huge pre-Islamic souk. Spiritual Quest Visited by millions throughout the year for Umrah and for hajj, Jeddah bustles with pilgrims from

July 2018_MY Guide.indd 33

all over the world and all walks of life. They have come to fulfill one of the five pillars of Islam – to perform the hajj, the five-day Islamic religious pilgrimage. Located in Saudi Arabia, Makkah and Madinah are the two holiest cities in Islam. The former is about an hour’s drive from Jeddah (hence its moniker of being the Gate to Makkah), while the latter is three to four hours by car. ■

About the writer Rozina’s love affair with travel and tourism started at an early age. She is a regular contributor to travel blogs and magazines and is always on the lookout for new frontiers to explore.

GETTING AROUND The easiest way to get around Jeddah is by car due to a lack of proper public transport. If you don’t have a car, taxis are an inexpensive way to get around. Or download the Uber app to get a ride in minutes.

BEST TIME TO VISIT A seaside city, Jeddah is warm for most of the year, though winter is probably the most pleasant time to visit. Jeddah features a tropical arid climate, and unlike many other Saudi Arabian cities, it retains its warmth during the winter months from November to February.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Be sure to respect Islamic laws – Saudi Arabia is a conservative country. It should be noted that restaurants close five times a day for prayers and are divided into two sections – singles (for men) and family (for families and single women). Restaurants are closed during fasting hours in the holy month of Ramadan. It is illegal for a foreign visitor to eat, drink or smoke in public at this time.

TRAVELLER ETIQUETTE Important to dress modestly. Men should cover their knees and shoulders and women should wear an outer robe known as abaya and should always carry a headscarf.

Leading The Future

Of Healthcare Raman Singh, chief executive officer of Singaporebased pharmaceutical company Mundipharma, talks about the challenges in the industry and how he plans to lead the company into the digital age. Interview Anne Loh | Photography Tesshire Chan

July 2018_InProfile03.indd 34

14/06/2018 11:59 AM

Raman Singh | IN PROFILE

For the last six years that I’ve been with Mundipharma, it has had an amazing run, growing 25-30 percent on average. When you’re starting up, you have dreams and ambitions, which are so powerful when you’re small and have so much to do. An amazing kind of culture is built up at the start and I never want the beginning to end because I think that’s the spirit, the culture of Mundipharma. How I feel today is the paranoia whether we still have the sense of culture that brought us here, and that keeps me at the edge of my seat. How do you plan to drive the company in the near term and where do you see Mundipharma in five years?

When we set out our vision for this company, we wanted to make a difference to the human race. We wanted to ensure that every product that we have, or that we will have, will reach as many people around the world as possible, so that we could make a difference in their lives. I’m fortunate and privileged to be in an industry that could have a huge impact on individuals and their families. Tell us more about the new Mundipharma super healthcare hub in Singapore. What does placing global R&D here mean for the company?

We do understand that two-thirds of the world’s population live in the emerging world and a large proportion of that is in Asia. We wanted to have a hub close to the market that would need it the most. If you look at pandemics, epidemic or infectious diseases in the last 15 years, most of them were either born here or imported here, to the emerging world. Being in Singapore gives us an amazing opportunity to be closer to the people who would need the medication the most, and to help develop products that are relevant to them. It’s been said that the medicine cabinet is empty of super drugs as viruses mutate to become more resistant. How do you see the way forward?

Rapid urbanisation is leading to a lot of deforestation; rapid expansion where cities are getting denser, where the infrastructure can’t cope, and there’s unprecedented movement of people between cities and countries. That’s what’s leading to much of the drug resistance. The efficiency and efficacy of drugs are no longer there. This gives us tremendous opportunity. How do we rethink the developments and advancements that we have, to develop drugs faster and quicker to fulfil the needs that we have? Digitisation has helped us

July 2018_InProfile03.indd 35

We wanted to ensure that every product that we have, or that we will have, will reach as many people around the world as possible, so that we could make a difference in their lives. tremendously. Today there’s tons of modelling going on that can predict how a drug will behave when it goes to human trial, thus eliminating a lot of cost, a lot of time and having a more targeted therapy. Pain management, oncology, ophthalmology, respiratory… how does consumer healthcare fit into the Mundipharma scheme of things?

I strongly believe healthcare should be a human right, like the air we breathe. It should not be a privilege. To be that, the way we take medication has to change. At the moment, it’s quite reactive: you fall sick, you take medicine. We must move from reactive to be predictive, to being preventive. That is the holy grail – that you would be able to first predict something is happening, that you can intervene, and eventually you prevent it from happening. Consumer health is that space; that preventive space that you have is what consumer health is about. We are a consumer health company in that everything we sell is data-driven and could make a difference in your life. All our consumer health products, all our over-the-counter drugs have been researched, backed by data, backed by claims that could actually make a difference. I believe consumer health should be an integral part of a pharmaceutical company. You’ve called for the private and public sectors to work together to stop infectious diseases from spreading out of control. Why is this partnership necessary?

I believe the problem of infectious diseases that we have will not go away. ASEAN is quite a hotbed for these viruses because there are almost 600 million people and the effect of rapid urbanisation is the proximity to animals and deforestation. Think about this: 65 percent of the world’s pigs, 45 percent of the world’s poultry are produced in Asia, nine out of 10 ducks are farmed in Asia. To address this, a multi-pronged approach is required. Other than having a resilient healthcare system, I think food, agriculture, travel, tourism, infrastructure, media, entertainment, banking and financing all play a part, whether direct or indirect effect. Philanthropic, civil societies, academics, government – all should work together. There must be a common agenda. National objectives and private sector

incentives must align. Unlocking the private sector will be transformational in fighting infectious diseases. Would artificial intelligence or technology be a disruptor to the pharmaceutical industry?

Not now because the pharmaceutical industry is quite regulated. It’s a matter of time. I strongly believe if the pharmaceutical industry does not adapt, it will be forced to by the people around it. The future would rely on artificial intelligence, machine learning, virtual reality, in different scopes. In drug research, it will eliminate a lot of costs, come up with precision medicine and ensure access to medication and consultation is provided to as many people as possible because infrastructure is a huge limitation. There are not enough hospitals and healthcare providers, and roads are not in place to reach far-flung places in the emerging world. Digitisation has eliminated a lot of barriers. Pharmaceutical companies will become pure suppliers, that’s how I see the evolution of healthcare.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 35 | July 2018

2017 was an incredible year for you in terms of recognition from the business community. How do you feel?

What are some of the challenges facing the industry right now?

The drug approval process is getting tougher, all over the world. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the U.S. has huge hurdles to cross to get medications approved. It’s an expensive process. Access has become a huge issue; there’s always pricing pressure, and regulators are having to manage budgets with an ageing population. There are also not enough hospitals or healthcare providers who are trained. You’ve been called a visionary in the pharmaceutical industry. What’s your endgame?

How I see the endgame playing out is that this industry will be very different 10 years from today. Some people are underestimating the impact of digitisation, others are well on their way, like us. We are carrying out tonnes of experiments, we don’t know what will stick, what will fly. I personally don’t know how the future will play out but the things that work, we scale. Things that don’t work, we move on. I want to position Mundipharma as a digital company selling healthcare products. I don’t think that’s too far away – 10 years, give or take. ■

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City (which locals still choose to call Saigon) is a play of contrasts, blending a bustling mix of the old and the new: renovated colonial villas, countless coffee shops, generations of momand-pop storefronts, and recently opened bars and boutiques resting in the shadows of a shimmering skyline of newly-minted high-rises.

In addition to the beautifully dilapidated colonial structures and some of the oldest pagodas in the country, District 3 is where you’ll find the Venerable Thich Quang Duc Memorial, a monument dedicated to the monk who set himself on fire to protest the persecution of Buddhists, and the seminal War Remnants Museum, where the American War is chronicled in raw, gory detail. These are important stops for tourists who want to revisit Vietnam’s recent, turbulent history.

Heaviness aside, “District 3 possesses a distinctive characteristic that represents the daily living culture of Saigon,” says Dàm Vū, a leading Vietnamese architect of the modern yet nostalgic T House building in District 3. “It is considered by the Saigonese as the best place to live in the city, which has been transcribed into an age-old saying every local knows, ‘Eat in District 5, live in District 3, and play in District 1.” Living in District 3 means “to feel alive,” offers influential gallerist Quynh Pham, whose own Galerie Quynh is just over the border in District 1. “It is the vibrant area of Saigon with an eclectic mix of cultural spaces in renovated villas and hip, young boutiques and cafés.” One of these cultural spaces Quynh recommends is Salon

goingplacesmagazine.com | 37 | July 2018

Most of its 24 districts are seeing the change. It’s in District 3, however, that we see the finest mix of the contemporary and the old, arts and culture, and where you can find some calm from the chaos of the city. Adjacent to District 1, the more obvious business and retail concentration, District 3 is a quieter alternative preferred by locals. “District 3 is one of my favourite areas in

Saigon and one of my favourite streets is Pham Ngoc Thach. There’s not a lot on that road, but it is lined with giant trees that make for perfect walks, ending at the Ho Con Rua (Turtle Lake),” offers local artist Richard Streitmatter-Tran.

His passion for the preservation and promotion of local and internationally based Vietnamese artists and cultural events is levelled in this charming two-storey villa, which doubles as a “salon” for conferences, talks and lectures. That means an ample display of antiques throughout the 25-storey property that underscores the intertwined history of the two cultures. Its two restaurants, Saigon Kitchen and Café des Beaux Arts, are the closest one will get to Michelin-star dining in the city. In fact, the hotel regularly brings in Michelinrated chefs to show their commitment to the culinary experience. The spa and the regular jazz crooners are all charming features of the hotel, but it’s the 360-degree view from the pool and the Social Club Rooftop Bar that will take one’s breath away. A Taste For The New

Dine at Beijing’s restaurants and you take a voyage through the cuisines of China and the world. A taste of the street food, however, will transport you through the capital’s diverse neighbourhoods and into its past. Words + Photography Mark Parren Taylor

Hop on a bike and hit the streets. Beijing’s little streets that is, the hutongs, those haphazard alleys and lanes (and sometimes passageways) lined with one- and two-storey shophouses and courtyard homes. This is where the metropolis – so often daunting, even overwhelming – becomes village-like, on a human-scale.

1. Traditionally a Muslim snack, the shaobing roll is sliced and filled with beef fried with garlic, scallion, radish and herbs 2. Wangfujing Snack Street sells everything from bowls of noodles to scorpions on skewers 3. A crêpe-like bread filled with egg, deep-fried batter crisp, coriander and scallion

2

At the heart of Beijing, the Forbidden City is colossal, and must have seemed even more so when it was encircled by some 6,000 of these low-rise hutongs. But that was decades ago. You can take a nought off that number today, because many neighbourhoods have been flattened since the 1980s to make way for the 21st-century capital’s shopping malls and high-rises. Nevertheless, those hutongs that remain offer an enticing taste of both the past and the future of this great city.

3

Tanghulu – the traditional confection of candied hawthorn fruit on a stick – is symbolic of the change in the capital’s street food scene. Nowadays, alongside the original hawthorn berry, vendors are sugar-coating cubed pineapple, strawberry and bright-green kiwi, even cherry tomatoes. Street food is adapting to a population that demands novel ways to have its taste buds titillated. Not that there isn’t an array of offbeat snacks on offer to keep the adventurous amused – and social media feeds well-fed. Head into Wangfujing Snack Street and amongst the bowls of mussels, noodles and boiled offal, you’ll find skewers of scorpion, starfish and seahorse to nibble on. But I would probably leave the scorpion till after a juicy kebab, because even if you don’t fancy chewing on the critter, the tail might come in handy as a toothpick.

In A Big City

Beijing grew on the appetites of its traders and workers. Many of them arrived after epic journeys by horse along the Silk Road, on foot from remote villages, or weary after days on hard-sleeper trains. And the food that welcomed them to their new lives in this city is still made on the hutongs. Today’s hole-in-the-wall bakers and dumpling makers rub shoulders with burger joints and artisan coffeeshops, but you can find street hawkers there too. People who do things the old-fashioned way: they park their bicycle or cart and sell roasted sweet potato, steaming Xinjiang nut cake or tanghulu.

Flavours From Afar Let’s be certain about one thing: scorpion and starfish aren’t proper Beijing street food. But grilled kebabs (skewered slivers of lamb or chicken) certainly are. Here they’re known as chuan’r, and tend to go down very well with iced drinks on a sultry summer night. These moreish meaty morsels were introduced to Beijing by Uyghurs, Hui people and other central Asian Muslims. Head over to Huguosi Street or the district around Niujie Mosque and you’ll discover street kiosks and old-style stores making cakes and breads, chaogeda dumplings and baodu quick-cooked tripe. The kinds of recipes that find their roots in Xinjiang province perhaps – or that were invented here in Beijing in Muslim kitchens. Not all the capital’s street food treats have travelled such distances though. My go-to fix jianbing is a stuffed pancake which originated ‘down the road’ in Tianjin, the one-time treaty

port some 120 kilometres southeast and which can be reached in just 30 minutes by the new intercity railway service. This northeast Chinese ‘wrap’ is satisfying, flavourful and always cooked to order. know about. There’s a noteworthy little stall selling freshly roasted whole duck (for not much more than a cup of coffee), but the other booths are tempting too. It’s the kind of market that makes a great morning excursion—and where you can pick up a picnic lunch to enjoy at a park alongside nearby Houhai Lake. Sadly, there’s news that this market may be redeveloped.

Look out also for offerings like donkey ‘burger’ (lürou huoshao). For the sweet-toothed, lüdagun is a red bean and glutinous rice cake dusted in soybean flour. Or there’s a twisted, crunchy sweet pastry with a name that describes its appearance: cuimahua or ‘crispy horse tail’. You’ll find them next to other classic sweet snacks such as fried tangerduo (sugar ears) or gummy aiwowo (Ai’s love).

Little Eats

Duan Yu, executive chef of Bo Jing Xuan, a restaurant favoured by Beijing’s gastronomic elite, spends the morning showing me the best of the city’s food halls, Sanyuanli Market. “I must cook zhajiang mian for you,” he tells me as he pays for a bag of freshly pulled noodles. “It’s classic Beijing-style street food.” And it perfectly sums up the local cuisine: wheat noodles topped with julienne-sliced raw veggies and ground meat in a smoky–salty fermented yellow soybean sauce.

For those who may be a little shy of sticking their big toe in the city’s street food scene, restaurants such as the Grand Hyatt’s Made in China offer an eye-opening introduction to the very best of Beijing bites, or xiaochi (little eats) as they’re called. This is where everything from quick-and-easy noodles to long-roasted Beijing duck is on offer in an unhurried, and distinctly chic, environment.

Despite the fact that we end up in his professional restaurant kitchen, there’s no other way for Chef Duan to cook this yummy, umami-rich recipe than the way it is made in kiosks and cafés across the city: fast and fresh. It’s the timing of the cooking of the noodles and the sauce – along with a little ‘breath of the wok’ tinge – that makes this so special.

The next step would be to visit one of those traditional-style institutions that locals depend on when they want to roll themselves up in the comfort blanket of old-school cooking. Top of my list: Yaoji Chaogan, a bustling eatery serving spot-on time-honoured local fare. Conveniently, it’s adjacent to the Drum Tower, and just a trot along from on-trend Nanluoguxiang.

In Sunshine & Snow

Even in the depth of winter, on Qianhai Lake, January’s deep freeze cannot push street food indoors. Locals head onto the ice to skid around on sleds that can be hired for just a few kwai. In the middle of the lake, hawkers set up stalls, where they fire up gas burners to flash-fry noodles and boil soups. It all looks a little precarious but there have been no reports of any sunken food carts yet.

Nanluoguxiang is the kind of reinvented hutong that locals and visitors love to stroll along. It’s somewhere between London’s Covent Garden and Sydney’s Paddington, and amid its melange of design-led boutiques and craft stores, street hawkers and hole-in-the-wall take-outs offer all varieties of trade and new-age, local and fusion fare.

Whether you decide to explore the city on foot, by pedal power, or even on a sled, Beijing is a city that rewards the curious and the adventurous, offering opportunities to meet with easy-going if straight-talking locals, and to taste some simply delicious street food. ■

For perhaps an altogether more authentic experience, try hitting one of the city’s fresh and cooked food markets. I’m particularly fond of Sihuan Market, with its row of street food kiosks that only a few out-of-towners seem to

NORTH ISLAND Auckland-Hobbiton-Rotorua

Given New Zealand's varied attributes, no wonder it was picked as the stand-in for MiddleEarth in Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of the Lord of the Rings fantasy trilogy. Linking some of New Zealand’s most famous attractions on an easy three-hour journey, this route is tailor-made for anyone who wants to see New Zealand’s best highlights in a short time. Kick off your tour in Auckland, the country’s largest city, with a visit to the Auckland Museum before hopping onto the Thermal Explorer, a well-signposted highway that runs through some of the most dramatic landscapes of the Central North Island, toward Rotorua. Along the way, stop at Matamata for a tour of the Hobbiton Movie Set. Don’t miss Bag End, the only Hobbit hole that visitors can enter.

parks (we like Hell's Gate) for a look at bubbling mud pools and spewing geysers, indulge in a natural geothermal spa, and experience Maori culture with a visit to Te Puia, Mitai Village or Tamaki Village. TIP: Other than its volcanic features, Rotorua is also famed for its weird and wonderful adventure activities. Take your pick from zorbing, shweebing or swooping!

Rotorua-Taupo-Wellington

Given its central location, Rotorua makes for a natural base to explore the rest of New Zealand. Take the Thermal Explorer to Taupo, a lively water-town and home to Lake Taupo, the largest lake in Australasia. Stunning volcanic geography and tracts of pine forest will keep you entertained along the one-hour drive but make

a pit stop at Huka Falls, New Zealand’s most photographed attraction. This 100-metre-wide river pumps water from Lake Taupo at the rate of 200,000 litres per second, or enough to fill five Olympic-sized swimming pools in under a minute! From here, take your time cruising down the 33 kilometre-across, 46-kilometre-long Lake Taupo – it makes for a real convertible, wind-inyour-hair kind of driving. Depending on how much time you have, visit Tongariro National Park, a UNESCO-listed national park; spend the night at Ohakune, New Zealand’s capital of the carrot and home to many alpine lodges, or head south to Martinborough, the heart of a wine region famed for its Pinot Noir. End at the nation’s capital Wellington, where the magnificent waterfront views are as vibrant as its cultural and artistic scene. TIP: Wellington was home for the crew of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Go on a tour of the filming locations, including Bree and Minas Tirith.

Bringing you the sheer beauty of the Northern coastline and the hip city vibes of Auckland, the best thing about this route is it can be done any time of the year. Even at the peak of winter in July and August, the North Island is still lovely and balmy. Driving northward from Auckland, it’s all long country roads and rolling farm country with frequent peeks of the ocean and nearby beaches. Stop at the seaside town of Paihia, gateway to the famous Bay of Islands, a cluster of 144 bucolic isles with plenty to do – go on a dolphin swimming safari; explore Waitangi, the birthplace of New Zealand’s founding document; or take a ferry to the charming township of Russell. Leaving Paihia, make your way to the incorrectly named Ninety Mile Beach (which is actually only 55 miles long or 80 kilometres) and end at Cape Reinga, one of New Zealand’s northernmost towns and considered the separation marker between the Tasman Sea to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east. This is also a sacred place for the Maoris. According to mythology, the spirits of the dead travel to Cape Reinga to leap off the headland before journeying to their afterlife. TIP: At Cape Reinga, take a walk to the iconic Cape Reinga Lighthouse and watch the tidal race phenomenon, where the two seas clash to create unsettled waters off the coast.

Rotorua-Whakatane-Gisborne-Napier

If you’re seeking beauty in isolated places, an authentic slice of Kiwi culture, and the adrenalin rush of a challenging drive, the East Cape route is right up your alley. From Rotorua, get onto State Highway 35 a.k.a the Pacific Coast Highway. Gently rolling hill country takes you through numerous seaside villages with points of interest: Whakatane is home to White Island, the only active volcano that can be visited by helicopter; Omarumutu and Torere are celebrated for their decorative Maori art; and Te Araroa is famed for its 600-year-old pohutukawa tree. Head south and spend the night at Gisborne to catch the sunrise – it’s the first place in the world to see the sunrise.

SOUTH ISLAND Christchurch-Oamaru-Dunedin

The last leg of your journey takes you to Napier, a lively city that boasts one of the world’s best collections of Art Deco architecture. It’s also the centre of Hawke’s Bay, a fertile wine-growing region that you can explore on a self-drive or a bicycle tour – the perfect opportunity to soak up the sunshine that the region is famous for.

More of a culture vulture than tree hugger? Begin your journey at South Island’s primary gateway, Christchurch. Also called The Most English City outside England, gothic buildings, manicured gardens and arty galleries beckon but you’ll also find a vibrant city rebuilding post-earthquakes. A must-see is the Cardboard Cathedral, a temporary replacement for the city’s iconic 1864 Anglican cathedral, one of Christchurch’s most prized landmarks destroyed during the crippling 2011 earthquake.

TIP: You’ll be travelling through one of the most remote parts of the North Island, where accommodation and eating options en route are extremely limited, roads are windy and many in poor condition, so planning is crucial.

From here, make your way south to the mountainringed basin known as the Mackenzie Country, stopping at the glacier-fed Lake Tekapo. Boasting stunning turquoise waters, it is also home to two of New Zealand’s most photographed

monuments, the Church of the Good Shepherd and a bronze statue of a collie sheepdog. Head south along the coast until you reach the historical town of Oamaru, otherwise known as the steampunk capital of the world. Stay the night to catch its famous colony of Little Blue Penguins, before continuing on to Dunedin, the university capital of New Zealand and home to Edwardian architecture, the world’s steepest street and Speights Brewery. TIP: Just across the road from Dunedin Railway Station is the Cadbury Factory, which offers a fun insider tour of a chocolate factory making classic New Zealand lollies like the Jaffa and chocolate fish.

On a whalewatching expedition, there’s a high chance that you’ll see other sea life such as fur seals and dolphins, all attracted to the Kaikoura Canyon. Carry on to Marlborough Sounds to enjoy the local Sauvignon Blanc, the signature produce of this region, before ending your epic trip in style at Nelson, a creative mecca that’s home to more than 300 working artists and craftspeople. TIP: Note of caution for those with an inclination to motion sickness. The drive from Havelock to Picton takes you past sheer cliff drops overlooking Marlborough Sounds.

Queenstown-Wanaka-Franz Josef

Any drive out of Queenstown – dubbed New Zealand’s answer to Aspen – is bound to be scenic; it’s built around Lake Wakatipu, a long, thin Z-shaped lake formed by glacial processes and set against a spectacular range of mountains such as The Remarkables, Cecil Peak and Walter Peak. We recommend taking the route from Queenstown to Franz Josef, which follows the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Head out North East via

the Crown Range road, a short but spectacular route that travels up over countless switchbacks to the summit before descending into Wanaka, another picturesque lakeside town, albeit with the added bonus of more sunlight hours in a day. The final leg of your journey coasts past the rugged West Coast and brings you to glacier country. This part of the South West New Zealand World Heritage area is marked by ancient glaciers nestled amidst primeval forest. These frozen white rivers, tumbling down icecarved rock valleys, are a sight to behold from anywhere, but what makes this region unique is that they can be experienced up close. Nowhere else in the world have glaciers advanced so close to the sea at this latitude. The terminal face of Fox Glacier is just five kilometres from the nearest township, while you can walk to the terminal of Franz Josef Glacier in about 10 minutes. TIP: A popular jumping-off point to water activities and extreme adventures, Queenstown has plenty of tour and activity operators on Shotover Street, incidentally also the location of Ferg Burger, supposedly the world’s best burger. Just be prepared for 45-minute queues!

Mention the Fiordland National Park – home to the glacier-carved fiords of Doubtful and Milford Sounds – and most people think of mile-high cliffs and roaring waterfalls. However, a major highlight of a trip to the fiordlands is the drive through the Milford Sound Highway. Hailed as one of the best road trips in the world, the highway cuts through mirror lakes, pristine rainforest, snow-capped mountains and trickling waterfalls. A particularly scenic section is just before you enter the 1.2-kilometre-long Homer Tunnel. As you sit at what must be one of the world’s most remote traffic lights, you are surrounded by glacier-carved rock cliffs. It takes around eight hours to reach the foot of Milford from Queenstown so we recommend breaking up the driving time over three days. Mid-trip, it’s worthwhile to stop over at Te Anau – the national park’s gateway – and take the popular boat tour to a grotto filled with thousands of tiny radiating glowworms – capping a dramatic and exhilarating adventure. TIP: Overnight and day cruises, scenic flights and kayaking trips are available to let you experience New Zealand’s world-famous fiords. ■

She’s A Star With Pertinence, Kwen Liew becomes the first Malaysian woman to win a Michelin star. Words + Photography Tan Lee Kuen

Inside, owner Ryunosuke Naito was in the kitchen scrubbing down the stove while his partner and co-owner, Kwen Liew, was busy setting the tables. The intimate fine-dining restaurant, able to seat only 14 at any one time, has a contemporary decor with bespoke wood features and Christofle Mood cutlery eggs. Sundays and Mondays are its off days but since the manager left a week ago, they've had to pick up the slack. "It's just the two of us now so I'll be in the kitchen while Ryu looks after the front-of-house," said Liew. "It's not the first time we've had our manager quit on us, but we'll manage."

Naito concurred while acknowledging his partner's flair for taste, "Liew has a special palate as she has tasted a variety of different food and knows what to bring to the dishes." This is partly thanks to her upbringing in Malaysia, a melting pot of culinary influences such as Malay, Chinese and Indian. Although always interested in food, Liew never had childhood ambitions of being a chef. One of her earliest memories of cooking was as an eight-year-old stir-frying choy sum (leafy vegetables) under the guidance of her mother. Intrigued by the act of making food and not merely consuming it, she started perusing cookbooks and magazines for new recipes, but it was all just for fun.

After high school, she tried her hand at design and makeup but none of the ventures resonated. It was a chance introduction to Le Cordon Bleu in Australia by a friend that led her on the path to the professional culinary world. "I love cooking and I love to eat, so why not try it out?" she thought. Turns out that Liew has a natural affinity for the kitchen. She did two semesters with the school in Sydney before transferring to its branch in Bangkok. On

It was a grey spring Monday in Paris, the sky overcast and threatening rain when I arrived at Restaurant Pertinence on rue de l’Exposition, a quiet street within striking distance of the Eiffel Tower, devoid of tourists.

Opened only a year ago in March 2017, Pertinence shot to gastronomic fame when it won one Michelin star this year. When Michelin president Jean-Dominique Senard surprised them with a visit, cameraman in tow, to welcome them to the Michelin family, the couple looked stunned by the news. Naito, overwhelmed, teared up. Liew looked surprised but calm. "We were shocked. Of course, it's our dream but we never searched for stars," she said.

Winning the award is a double honour for Liew. Out of the 57 newly-starred establishments in France on the 2018 list, she is one of only two women to win a spot in this male-dominated industry. Although Naito was singled out as the driver of the restaurant's food, they have an equal partnership and share the duties evenly. "We call ourselves the four-armed chef or quartre-mains in French," said Liew. "We do everything together."

At the end of the day, star or no star, the duo continue to do what they do best, making great food while maintaining a business. the recommendation of another chef, she went on to study pastry at Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Pâtisserie in France. The young chef showed remarkable foresight and ambition: "I thought I should do a pastry course as I wanted to have my own restaurant someday."

goingplacesmagazine.com | 52 | July 2018

In 2011, Liew met Naito when she interned at Antoine in Paris for six months. Naito, the restaurant's sous chef and her senior, had already cut his teeth in the kitchens of Michelinstarred establishments such as Taillevent and Le Meurice. They worked together but there was no romance. After her internship, Liew moved to Singapore where she spent the next three years working at Le Saint Julien. This was to be her school of hard knocks and where she faced her toughest times as a female chef. "The male chefs would go, look who's this young girl giving us orders in the kitchen," related Liew. In one instance, a commis chef threw in his towel half-way through service and left the kitchen despite her protests. But with steely resolve and grit, Liew stuck it out and worked twice as hard to prove herself. A couple of years later, she returned to Paris for a short course and reconnected with Naito. This time, sparks flew, leading to a long-distance relationship that lasted for a year before Naito proposed that she joined him in Paris. "I had to think really long and hard about it because it would have meant uprooting myself all over again," Liew remembered. She took the plunge and the couple worked on the Bistrot Alexander III, a boat restaurant serving tapas and sharing plates on the Seine. more intimate, upscale restaurant that would allow them to do just that. Thus was born Pertinence, with its subtle but elegant decor and changing seasonal menu. It was the start of spring when I visited, a time of razor clams and asparagus, which were on the menu. Last season, they served scallops with tender bits of chicken oyster and garlic scapes, drizzled with serrano ham cream. It is this interplay of flavours that earned Pertinence a Michelin star and fans. "We both love textures and savoury tastes. We make sure that everything on your plate – the different textures and flavours – go together really well," said Liew. All is not roses, however. Along with the bouquets of being a Michelin-starred restaurant are the brickbats and demands. People expect more, a lot more, but generally, said Liew, the customers have been satisfied, leaving with smiles on their faces after a fine meal. At the end of the day, star or no star, the duo continue to do what they do best, making great food while maintaining a business. "Not everyone understands that Michelin can give you the star and they can also take it away," said Liew. So how do they handle the pressure? She smiled. "We just roll with it. We've been through tougher times." ■

From The

Rainforest Rainforest Fringe Festival celebrates the rich tapestry of Sarawak.

Sarawak is the sort of place that reels people in, without letting go. Visitors are often captivated by the sense of mystery and the mystical in the eastern Malaysian state’s rich culture, layered with ancient Borneo rainforests, historical White Rajahs, unique spiritual practices, soulful art and forest foods. It is these rich layers that the Rainforest Fringe Festival aims to showcase in a 10-day extravaganza to be held in the state capital of Kuching on 6-15 July. This will be the second time that the Rainforest Fringe Festival is being held as a run-up to the world-famous Rainforest World Music Festival in Santubong, just outside Kuching. Both festivals complement each other, with the Fringe Festival celebrating Sarawak’s deep culture as the music festival celebrates world music. Joe Sidek, director of the Rainforest Fringe Festival, hopes to reveal these layers in the same captivating manner as he has made George Town in Penang state come alive through his George Town Festival, which is now in its ninth year. “These layers are the story. That’s what makes it interesting, all these layers that lie beneath or in between,” he says. “I want to touch hearts, not just go for the wow factor.” The festival’s opening show this year is called ‘Sarawak: The Indigenous Showcase’ and aims to weave the traditional with the contemporary. This showcase is the first part of an ambitious two-year project that fuses dance, story-telling, chants, music and art. It will feature Sarawakian dancer and choreographer Raziman Sarbini, who is based in New York, and Sarawakian soprano Dewi Liana

Seriestha. The aim is to create a world-class production by next year that can tour the festival circuit. “Sarawak is the only place (where) we can find this sort of look and sound,” Joe said. Marrying the old with the new, the show aims to go well beyond tourism clichés. In fact, Joe said the festival is not a tourist fest, although visitors are welcomed, of course. Festivals, he said, should primarily be for the local community to celebrate the richness of the world around them, and to be inspired by new ideas and interpretations of their music, food, textiles, crafts and art. “The festival is to inspire our own people, although it’s great, of course, if foreign visitors find it intriguing and interesting too,” he said.

The events over the 10 days will showcase not just the traditional parts of Sarawak’s deep culture but also explore how these are changing as the local community adapt to their changing environment and lifestyles. Sarawak is far from a fossil or museum piece. With some 30 indigenous ethnic groups, it has a rich culture drawn from ancient spiritual beliefs and the rainforest, which is now being adapted by its peoples who have moved to the cities. The Rainforest Fringe Festival will explore these layers through a heady mix of exhibitions, film screenings, workshops, lectures, art installations and a marketplace. An exhibition on tattoos is expected to be a crowd-puller as tribal tattoos often evoke awe for their beauty and intricacy. Stories of tribal tattoos from around the world will be on show too, along with a special session with 24 Sarawakians who will tell the story of their own tattoos. Like the tattoo exhibition, many of the other festival events will include an element of international participation that Joe hopes will help spark creativity and innovation. One particularly interesting showcase is the ‘Bamboo that Binds & Wood’, a three-part series of

Drawing together artisans from the region, the hope is to spark fresh ideas in the creative use of bamboo and wood, both of which are a key part of the traditional architecture and crafts of the region. The programme includes an interactive installation of angklung (a traditional musical instrument made of bamboo in different lengths), a forum with international speakers on the creative uses of bamboo and wood, and a 20-day workshop with designers from Thailand, Taiwan and Sarawak to redesign Bornean crafts. The designers will be tasked to create innovative new designs during intensive sessions together in June, and these will be showcased during the festival. These cross-border collaborations can help evolve and enrich cultures, said Teo, recalling how her grandfather who was

a carpenter in Serian, about an hour’s drive from Kuching, had found fresh ideas through his collaboration with Bidayuh craftsmen in neighbouring areas. As with the George Town Festival, the Rainforest Fringe Festival events will also be spread out around the compact old town area of Kuching and beyond, to get visitors to explore the city for themselves. Borneo 744, an ultra-hip cavernous event space, will host a buzzing Market that will showcase not just local arts, crafts and food, but also exotic plants and books. Sarawak is home to a wide range of endemic flora, said Joe, reminiscing about his childhood visits to the market that always included plants for sale.

6

Beyond the festival events, visitors will be encouraged to seek out hidden treasures in the city. There are permanent exhibitions that, though small in scale, tell evocative personal stories about different aspects of Sarawak life. This includes the gallery at the Tun Jugah Foundation that displays the collection of textiles, beads, silver, jars and memorabilia of the family of Tun Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Temenggong

As a gallery devoted to the traditional Iban ikat weaving, or pua kumbu, there are nearly always weavers there making new masterpieces in the old tradition. The Sarawak Museum is currently undergoing a major refurbishment to build a worldclass facility to open in 2020, but a compact exhibition remains open to tell the stories of the cosmology, customs and culture of various ethnic groups. Interestingly, the exhibits are grouped by theme, such as marriage or death, rather than by ethnic group. This often creates a jolt of recognition when visitors see how similar or different the customs and traditions are, though they celebrate the same occasion. This may lead to better understanding of each other.

For the first time, the festival also aims to get visitors beyond the city comforts of Kuching to experience Sarawak in the raw. It will be offering bespoke trips to longhouses hidden in the forests, accessible only by boat or on foot. As one of the wildest places in the world, Sarawak intrigues in a way that few places can do. Even its more recent past appears to be right out of a movie – the story of the White Rajahs who ruled Sarawak for a century, and whose descendant, Jason Brooke, continues to be drawn to this place. He heads the Brooke Trust that now runs the Brooke Gallery to tell the story of his ancestors. For 10 days in July, the Rainforest Fringe Festival will bring these stories to life. “I always say that I’m just the baker making the cake; all the ingredients are already here,” said Joe. ■

Garbed in red and black, the horsemen gathered in the courtyard stand proud astride their wooden hobbyhorses, ready for action. As the scent of incense fills the night air, a solemn-faced gentleman walks to the centre of the ring and strikes the ground with a whip before tracing a border with it, and then individually blesses each horseman. Now that the performance arena is officially consecrated, the horsemen begin to sway to the mellow, hypnotic rhythm of the gamelan musicians. As the music increases in tempo, punctuated by the occasional whip-cracking, the horses’ movements grow more lifelike at every step.

The 20-odd residents from Sabak Bernam who call themselves Kumpulan Kesenian Kuda Kepang (KKKK) are dedicated practitioners of kuda kepang, a Java-originated dance art form that mimics a horse’s gallop, as its name suggests. Believed to be popularised by Sunan Kalijaga, a famed Islamic cleric who used arts and culture as a medium to convey his teachings, kuda kepang found its way into Malay popular culture in the early 20th century when Javanese immigrants brought the dance to southern Johor state. Back in its

2 1. Berasal dari Jawa, tarian kuda kepang mendapat namanya dari langkah tariannya yang menyerupai larian kuda sebenar Originally from Java, the kuda kepang dance is so named because of its movements, which resemble a galloping horse

Traditionally, the dancers made their own hobbyhorses by weaving cowhide or pleating bamboo, with each horse taking up to five days to complete.

Walaupun KKKK hanya sekumpulan penari aktif

heyday, kuda kepang was a staple feature at festive events. It typically ran on for hours: the highlight was a string of extreme stunts in which the performers would thrill the audience by eating glass shards, tearing into coconuts with their bare teeth, or enduring whip lashes – all without showing any outward signs of pain. Fifty-eight-year-old Mohd Roslie bin Alias, the founder-leader of the group, says kuda kepang temporarily borrows energy or life-force from kayangan (the unseen realm) to execute these physical feats. “That’s why they go into a trance and show a heightened sense of awareness. It’s not very different from how kavadi bearers go into an elevated state during Thaipusam (the Tamil festival).” While this aspect of kuda kepang understandably attracts a lot of attention, Roslie stresses the dance is much more than its hyped-up mystical elements. Watching his first live performance as a young teenager, when a performance troupe from Johor toured Selangor, he was struck by the kuda kepang’s interweaving of various cultural elements: “Within a single genre, you had dance, comedy, and a great storyline.” Elements of old stories

that are incorporated into the dance incorporate characters such as tigers, queens and royal guards and promote noble values such as the valour of warriors, the forces of good triumphing over evil, and respect to royalty.

Then there’s the making of the hobbyhorse itself, a fading art. Traditionally, the dancers made their own hobbyhorses by weaving cowhide or pleating bamboo, with each horse taking up to five days to complete. But these raw materials are hard to get these days, Roslie says, so plywood is more commonly used. “The craft of making the kuda kepang props teaches us good virtues such as time and patience,” he says.

In the early 1980s, Roslie started reaching out to other like-minded villagers in Sabak Bernam to form a performance troupe. On ordinary days, KKKK primarily operates out of Homestay Hj Dorani in the district of Sabak Bernam in the state of Selangor. It also

frequently collaborates with local organisations that promote local arts and heritage, and has performed at cultural events all over Malaysia. While the group functions as a pool of active performers rather than a full-fledged troupe, its appearances are bringing renewed attention to the art, and more importantly, attracting new blood. Its youngest member is 11 years old. Over the past few years, kuda kepang has been muted from its original form with some spiritual elements taken out in the name of taboo. “But that’s not all there is to it,” Roslie points out. “By passing this unique tradition to all those who are interested, I hope to show the world just how beautiful and artistic kuda kepang is.” ■ For show appearances, contact: MOHD ROSLIE BIN ALIAS Kumpulan Kesenian Kuda Kepang Quarters JPS, Parit 15, Sungai Merbau, Sungai Panjang, 45300 Sungai Besar, Selangor +6013 271 7444

A Man Of Letters

Linguist, nationalist, scholar, teacher, reformer: Zainal Abidin bin Ahmad, or Za’aba for short, was all this and more. His life’s work was a testament of his love for the Malay language. Words Siva Sithraputhran | Photography courtesy of Dewan Bahasa Dan Pustaka

Born in September 1895, Za’aba lived through a period of great change and contributed to the formation of the Malay national identity. Kikir in the state of Negeri Sembilan. Both his parents were of Indonesian descent. Noting the young Za’aba’s facility with language, his father’s ambitions for his son veered towards religious education.

Growing up in colonial Malaya at the start of the 20th century, Za’aba began to think about writing a book on Malay grammar when he was a schoolboy of 12. His resolve firmed through school and as he started working as a teacher and translator. In 1934, his series of three books on Malay grammar, titled Pelita Bahasa Melayu (Beacon of the Malay Language) were published. So successful were the books that they became part of the national curriculum and the standard bearer for Malay spelling and grammar for decades. The books broke new ground, standardising spelling and grammar in a way that departed from classical Malay and adjusting syntax with influences from Arabic and English, both languages in which Za’aba had achieved proficiency. Crucially, they were books on the Malay language written by a native Malay and displaced outdated guides written by British colonial administrators.

The Za’aba Spelling System His success had much to do with his background. He was born in the rural Malay heartlands of peninsular Malaysia, in the small town of Batu

July 2018_Malaysian Icon_ Za'aba.indd 63

After instruction at home, Za’aba went to school in his hometown before going on to a bigger school over 60 kilometres away in Linggi, receiving instruction in Malay and completing elementary education, the highest level available at Malay schools at the time. He also attended Arabic lessons. From there, he went on to an English-medium school, St Paul’s Institution, in the state capital Seremban, and in 1915, became the first native Malay to pass the Senior Cambridge exams.

The Malindo Project Za’aba’s books on grammar firmly established him in the emerging Malay intelligentsia. After all, the system of Malay spelling he pioneered was simply being called Ejaan Za’aba (the Za’aba spelling) in the popular press. Za’aba was called in to help when standardised spelling and grammar were mooted for the Malay language used in Malaya (as it was called then) and Indonesia. The Malindo Project, as it was called, received support from academics on both sides but eventually petered out for political reasons when Indonesia objected to the formation of Malaysia in 1963. When his books on grammar came out, Za’aba was a translator and lecturer at the Sultan Idris Teachers Training College. His teaching career

had begun in 1916 in Johor Bahru, when his earliest writings were published. Za’aba was also a Malay-language instructor at the School of Oriental and African Studies from 1947 to 1951, gaining a degree from the London institution during his time there. Later still, from 1954 to 1958, he became the first head of the Malay Studies department at University of Malaya, at the time located in Singapore. Through his life, Za’aba produced a large body of work, mainly on Malay language, culture and religion. He authored books, translated literary works in English, penned numerous articles and produced a string of lectures. His work earned him the rare title of Pendeta (pundit) from the 3rd Congress on Malaya Language and Literature in 1956. He received the honorific title of Tan Sri in 1962. Born in September 1895, Za’aba lived through a period of great change and contributed to the formation of the Malay national identity. He died in October 1973 aged 78. His life is best summed up on his own words: “I’d just like to rest. But it doesn’t mean that I will stop writing and authoring books. These two are qualities that come naturally for me,” he said in a December 1958 interview in the Malay daily, Berita Harian, as he was about to retire from his post at University of Malaya. ■

Proud Moment After a comprehensive 14-week Cabin Crew Training Programme, the first batch of cabin crew for 2018 has graduated and will take to the skies soon. Comprising 73 bright young women from all over Malaysia, the graduates received their certificates in a ceremony at the MAB Academy attended by families, friends, trainers and the airline’s management. As part of the training, graduates underwent classroom studies, examinations and practical training in safety and emergency procedures. They will now specialise in operating the Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Caring Gesture The fasting month can be a trying time for Muslims, more so for those working on shifts. In the spirit of Ramadan, the airline distributed packed meals to employees through its ‘Singgah Sahur’ programme. Held over two sessions, over 1,000 packed meals were distributed by the management team, led by Chairman Tan Sri Md Nor Yusof and Group Chief Executive Officer Izham Ismail, to employees at the Flight Management Building, Main Terminal Building, Engineering Complex and MASkargo at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Transformative Steps Digital initiatives have been taking centre stage at the airline, driven by a team of IT staff called iNovus. Following the success of two events under the Digital IT Disruptor Series, which included developing prototypes for a better passenger pre-embarkation process as well as streamlined reporting procedures for crew members, the latest event roped in the children of 25 staff members through the Digital IT Junior Disruptor Programme. Aptly themed ‘Young Minds Disrupting Traveller Experience’, the educational programme saw the children, aged between 12 and 16 years old, pitching and testing digital designs and innovations in a lively and exciting environment within iSpace, the airline’s in-house innovation lab.

Rewarding Dedication Seven Malaysia Airlines employees, including those from AeroDarat, MASWings and MASkargo, were rewarded for their hard work at the inaugural Anugerah WOW. Short for Way of Working, the awards were held to honour and recognise committed employees who went above and beyond the call of duty, be it in operational excellence or customer satisfaction. From 48 entries, three outstanding individuals and four teams were selected. Winners in the Individual category received RM500 (USD125) in cash, while Team category winners received RM1,000 (USD251). All winners took home a certificate of recognition each.

Unsung Heroes Domino’s Pizza Malaysia showed its appreciation to Malaysia Airlines employees recently through its ‘Together-gether Fund’ initiative. The event recognised those who have contributed and served Malaysians in unique and outstanding ways. Special guests included a cabin cleaner, baggage caddy, trolley pusher, as well as a building cleaner and maintenance staff.

Safety + service info

Cabin Luggage handling Passenger and crew safety onboard our flights is our highest priority. In compliance with the airline’s policy and in observing Occupational, Safety and Health Regulations requirements, cabin crew are no longer required to stow passengers’ hand luggages into the overhead stowage compartment. This is to minimise occupational hazard and ergonomic risks faced by cabin crew in the aircraft. Cabin crew on duty will, however, assist passengers travelling with infants, young passengers travelling alone, the elderly, and passengers with reduced mobility. Passengers who are fit and in good health must carry, stow and secure their own hand luggages on board. Hand luggage exceeding the 7kg weight limit is required to be checked in before boarding.

Portable Electronic Devices (PED) For safety reasons and in line with the Department of Civil Aviation guidelines, mobile phones and all PEDs must be switched off once aircraft doors are closed. Whilst cruising, devices placed in flight mode may be used. The devices must again be switched off during the approach for landing until the aircraft is parked at the terminal building. Devices transmitting strong signals must remain switched off throughout the flight, until disembarkation. The Captain may prohibit the use of devices that can interfere with the aircraft’s system.

Lithium batteries Lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries for portable electronic devices (PEDs), including medical devices must not exceed 2g for lithium metal batteries and 100Wh for lithium ion batteries. All spare batteries, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for PEDs must be carried in passengers’ carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. For PEDs containing non-spillable batteries, they must be 12V or less or 100Wh or less. A maximum of two spare batteries may be carried. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.

Electronic cigarettes Electronic cigarettes must be carried on one’s person or in carry-on baggage only. Recharging of the device in-flight is not permitted.

Zero tolerance of abuse We value courteousness. Any form of threat, verbal abuse or violence towards our staff will be taken seriously. We are committed to supporting anyone who has been the victim of an assault.

July 2018_MH Safety Guide.indd 71

The series chronicles the events of the members of the Short family going about their daily lives in Los Angeles County. Each episode features four storylines as told by separate family members that eventually connect in the end. In the premiere of the third season, the Hughes family moves into the home of Heather’s parents, but this does not sit well with her mother.

In a parallel universe to the X-Men series, Stephen and Amy are ordinary parents on the run from the government when they discover their two children, Lauren and Andy, possess mutant abilities. They join an underground community of mutant resistance to fight against the authorities that discriminate against them and hope to hunt them down.

AUDIO ON-DEMAND

Malaysian singer and songwriter KAYDA’s Love For No Reason EP is playing onboard this month. She takes time out to chat with Going Places about her career and her sixtrack debut album, which also features her mother, Malaysian jazz queen Sheila Majid. How did you know that hiphop/R&B was the right genre for you as an artist?

I wouldn’t say it’s the right genre for me but hip-hop and R&B is the type of music that I’m comfortable performing and it’s the genre that I like the most. But as I grew up in a musical household, I’d also like to explore other genres and expand my creativity, such as singing and rapping on jazz or house music. How has your musical journey been so far? goingplacesmagazine.com | 84 | July 2018

It’s been great. People are starting to notice the type of style and music that I carry and they accept how I present myself and my music. I’m always happy when people come up to me to tell me that they love a particular part of my song lyrics. It makes me feel motivated to want to create more material of my own. You started writing your own songs when you were 13 years old. Has your song writing process changed since then?

It has definitely changed and improved a lot. As I grow older, I experience different things, learn and study lyrics from other songwriters and artists. Someday, I’d like to also sit down and collaborate with other talented songwriters to create more songs and perhaps write and produce music for other artists as well. Tell us how your first album Love For No Reason came about.

I have been in the Malaysian music industry professionally for about five years now. At the beginning,

I was just releasing singles and collaborating with other artists but one day I thought to myself that I should release my first “baby” but at the same time, I didn’t want to release too many songs. Hence, this six-track project. I sought the advice and help of many people in the industry up to a point where I got a bit lost in finding what I really want for myself and my music. Then I realised that there is no such as doing the “right” thing or “rules” when it comes to creativity. You just got to do it without any fears. I had to take risks, step out of my comfort zone, and work for it. I decided to collaborate with Indonesian composer Emir Hermono, who mixed and mastered my album. He understands my style and I understand his, so our visions just sort of gelled together for this album. I recorded and came up with the melodies for the verses on my own. It’s very fulfilling to be the executive producer of your own album. Hence, the name Love For No Reason.

What are your future plans?

I’m coming up with a web series on YouTube to capture the behind-the-scenes of my album, shows and other significant events since August 2017 up to my album launch on 5 April 2018. I’m recording more songs and coming up with another project with an established producer. I can’t say much about this yet. Other than that, I’ll be performing at events in the next few months and hope to expand my career into acting.

Boarding House Reach – JACK WHITE The third studio album by Jack White sees the American rock musician expanding his musical palette with perhaps his most ambitious work so far – a collection of songs that are both timeless and modern. Progressive rock tunes from the 1970s have taken over the bluesy sounds that fans are more accustomed to. The album provides great instrumentals and even greater guitar work by White.

Momentous Occasion

Stellar Showcase

In celebration of its 150th anniversary and to launch its limited-edition Jubilee collection, IWC Schaffhausen pulled out all the stops with a VIP cocktail party at Cargo 39 in Singapore. The 150 guests in attendance celebrated the occasion in the presence of guest-of-honour IWC Master Watchmaker Kurt Klaus (right).

Genting Studios recently premiered its new and original CG-animated production, dubbed Ocean Groove with Maestro. The five-minute story about life underwater will be staged at Sky Symphony, where 1,001 winch balls that synchronise and move to form different shapes complement four-storey-high LED screens playing colourful animations.

Festive Cheer

Wish Upon A Tree

Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr celebrations were made merrier by Malaysia Airports with activities to spread festive joy for travellers to their international airports. Among them was KUEHKITA, a showcase of Malaysian cookies and snacks produced by local entrepreneurs, as well as cash back offers from BOOST, an e-wallet application, that allows for a seamless payment experience.

Making its home at the lobby of One World Hotel is a brand-new, 10-foot-tall Wishing Tree. Part of the hotel’s ‘Your One and Only’ campaign, staying guests can hang their wishes on the tree and a lucky guest will have a wish granted by the hotel.
