They say the best way to overcome your fears is by facing them, so we’ve listed five extraordinary places where one can conquer acrophobia in the most adventurous way possible – be it walking over a glass-bottomed bridge or doing an obstacle course on the edge of a 65-storey building.

As demand increases for holidays that promote environmentally conscious and sustainable travel across the globe, here are some of the world’s leading eco-hotels and philanthropic experiences, where guests can travel and gain insight into work by charities and non-governmental organisations.
Scenic Spots To Catch An Indonesian Sunrise Author Jo Walton once said, “There’s a sunrise and a sunset every single day, and they’re absolutely free. Don’t miss so many of them.” We absolutely agree as nothing beats the sight of the morning rays slowly engulfing the world in magnificent amber light. Indonesia, with its beautiful peaks and ancient temples, has some of the world’s prime spots that are worth waking up early for.

FROM THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF
Dear Guests, It is my pleasure to welcome you onboard. We have reached the middle of the year in no time, and June looks to be an exciting month for football enthusiasts as the 2018 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Russia. Thirty-two countries will be competing, and the next few weeks are set to be a busy month for airlines around the world as they transport millions of fans across continents. I hope that no matter which team we are rooting for, the spirit of sportsmanship remains strong amongst all of us. This month is also special for Muslims worldwide as we celebrate Eid al-Fitr, a religious holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. This festive occasion is celebrated hugely in Malaysia, together with people of other races and religions. As Malaysia is a diverse multiracial country, most festivals are celebrated by the different ethnicities who live peacefully together.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 8 | June 2018
If you happen to be in Malaysia around this time, you will not miss the tradition of “open houses” being hosted, both in big cities and the countryside. If your visit is in the earlier part of June, you may visit Malaysia Airlines’ three Golden Lounges at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport for a special buka puasa (breaking of fast) feast of traditional dishes, including bubur lambuk, kuih Melayu and teh tarik. There will be a special station set up with buka puasa food items for travellers to take with them to their boarding gates. Malaysia Airlines also starts flying to Brisbane again this month. With strong support from Tourism Australia and Queensland, we are happy to be returning to Brisbane, offering convenient connections on Malaysia Airlines’ global network. Brisbane is strategically placed in close proximity to many of Queensland’s tourist destinations, which will facilitate our growth plans focusing on key business and leisure cities.
Izham Ismail
Group Chief Executive Officer Malaysia Airlines Berhad
Malaysia Airlines will fly into Brisbane four times weekly using the Airbus 330-300 aircraft with up to 290 seats. We invite guests to grab our best deals, not just to Brisbane but also to the other Australian cities we fly into, namely Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. By now you may have already seen Malaysia Airlines’ latest video on our branding campaign. With the tagline “Malaysian Hospitality Begins With Us”, we are taking our service to a new level of excellence. Malaysian Hospitality encompasses all aspects of the customer experience, from browsing our website or apps online to checking in or lounging on-ground, to enjoying our service and offerings onboard. The brand video demonstrates that, and we hope you like the many faces of our staff and Malaysians in various scenes depicting the true meaning of hospitality. I wish you a great journey with Malaysia Airlines always and a wonderful visit or stopover in Malaysia. ■

Editor’s Note
look at how Muslims in five countries – China, Tunisia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, United Kingdom and Malaysia – celebrate the festival in their own unique ways. On the same note, for the past two years during Syawal, I have written about my childhood neighbour, a large Muslim family in Segamat, Johor, and how they celebrated Eid. I had lost touch with the family after we moved out of our government quarters. Miraculously last year, more than one passenger read my note and alerted some of the family members, reuniting me with them.

As I write this note, my beloved country Malaysia is at the cusp of a new beginning. We have just concluded our 14th general elections and a new coalition has been swept into power, signaling that change is possible if we remain determined and persistent. Muslims around the world will welcome the new month of Syawal this month with the festival of Eid. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar when followers observe extreme abstinence, including dawn-to-dusk fasting; increase their prayers to Allah; and practise acts of charity, amongst others. But with nearly two million Muslims around the world, celebrations will vary according to the local customs. In our story, ‘Eid Around The World’, writer Tharik Hussain takes a
It is heartwarming to know how far airlines have come to connect people around the world. These days, it is not unusual to fly halfway around the world to see a loved one or to attend the concert of a favourite band. Soon, residents in Brisbane, Australia will be able to visit family and friends living in Malaysia and vice versa with the reinstatement of direct flights to the heart and capital of Queensland, Australia. The four times weekly service will begin on 6 June. In our cover story this month, Brisbane resident, Jennifer Johnston, gives us a tour of the city’s creative spaces, trendy restaurants, man-made beaches and botanic gardens. If you have not visited, it’s time to plan a trip! For fans of the beautiful game, the four-year wait for the 2018 FIFA World Cup will soon come to an end. Russia, the world’s largest country by landmass, will be hosting the tournament for the first time from 14 June to 15 July. Our curtain raiser written by Bill Edgar gives a preview of the event, from the national teams to watch to fixtures and facts and figures from past tournaments. And since the opening and final matches will be played out in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, we’ve put together an essential guide of the must-visit places, restaurants and things to do in the Russian capital in our MY Guide section. We hope you find it useful. To all our Muslim readers, we wish you a happy and peaceful Eid. Selamat Hari Raya, Maaf Zahir dan Batin. ■

Tahniah!

I recently travelled with Malaysia Airlines to Phuket for a quick holiday. As always, the moment I fastened my seat belt, I immediately grabbed a copy of Going Places to browse through the articles. I was instantly drawn to your photobook on Jiufen, Taiwan and was promptly spirited away to memories of my vacation to this charming old town a few months back. I thoroughly enjoyed the photos because they told a story: one that I made myself and enjoyed, and one that is able to connect with travellers who have been to this historic town. Who knows, as I reminisced about my adventures in Taiwan, someone somewhere is writing about my new adventure in Phuket in a future edition of Going Places. My thanks to the team at Going Places. I was able to relive great memories of my travels to Jiufen, in colour! Looking forward to seeing other great works ahead. CLARK KENDRICK GO, Nara, Japan
My association with Malaysia Airlines started about 15 years ago when I had my first flight experience to Adelaide to embark on my student life journey. I have never experienced any difficulty or grief be it during booking, boarding and especially during flight time since then. I was away in the U.K. for almost four years recently and was impressed with how the airline has managed to turn around the overall MH branding and flight experience. I was really impressed with Going Places, particularly the Travel Concierge segment. One of the best compared to other major in-flight magazines that I’ve seen during my work stint in Europe. One suggestion from me would be to share event updates for the following month rather than the current month in the Travel Concierge segment. By doing this, you can prompt more last-minute travellers, like me, to make the trip to attend the events. Or you can take a 40-60 approach, 40 percent for the current month and 60 percent for upcoming events. NOOR AZREE BIN NORDIN, Miri, Sarawak

Travel back in time to the Edo Period at Sanno Matsuri, one of Japan’s three largest festivals, as you venture through the heart of Tokyo, passing through Tokyo Station, Ginza and the Diet Building with a parade of 300 people dressed in ancient costumes. There is plenty to experience, such as flower displays arranged in a style known as Ikebana and special seatings in the shrine garden to savour Japanese tea. There is even a purification ceremony, where devotees walk through a large ring made of thatch while holding a doll acting as a ‘substitute’ for one’s sins.

Enduring Tradition Observed in various parts of the world, the Dragon Boat Festival is a cultural celebration that falls on the fifth day of the fifth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. Legend has it that Qu Yuan, a minister in ancient China, was slandered by jealous government officials and banished by the emperor. Disappointed, he drowned himself in the river, giving birth to the practice of dragon boat races to commemorate the death of the good minister. In Shanghai, boats are rowed down Wusong River in a colourful, vibrant display, and visitors can check out numerous ground events such as parades, games and dances. Get Ginned Up Kuala Lumpur’s cool hangout spot, APW, recently welcomed Grano Pasta Bar to its line-up of impressive restaurants and cafés. With the kitchen helmed by chef Meg Lee – who also oversees the adjacent Proof Pizza + Wine – Grano specialises in fresh pasta produced with a Piedmontese-made La Monferrina machine. First-timers should try the creste di gallo, a short pasta shaped like a rooster's comb, served with spicy Calabrian nduja pork sausage, capers, pearl onions and cherry tomatoes, or the ravioli stuffed with cured duck breast, mixed mushrooms and ricotta in tomato saffron broth. If it’s seafood you want, go for the spaghetti alla chitarra made with cuttlefish roe, prawns, smoked salmon, fennel and peppercorns.
Unwind after a long day during Gin O’Clock at The Majestic Malacca. Held every Friday and Saturday between 5 pm and 8 pm, this weekly event features an interactive gin cart where fans can make their own gin-based cocktails using the recipe cards provided. “Thanks to small independent distillers coupled with the revival of the cocktail scene both domestically and abroad, gin has entered its second wave of popularity. Consumers are thirsty for new and different interpretations of this beloved spirit,” said the hotel’s VP of Marketing, Geraldine Dreiser. The recipes were created by CK Kho (above), the bartender-owner of KL-based gin bar Pahit, using local ingredients to give a Malaccan twist to otherwise classic gin cocktails. Among the recipes on the cards are Malacca Collin, Celery Gimlet and a Pandan-infused Gin & Tonic.

Upcoming Malaysian artist Ethen Ng will participate in the ‘Tropical Fruit Fiesta’ group exhibition, in conjunction with Penang’s Durian Festival. Ng is best known for the sculpted horns in his ‘Batik Series’. The intricate motifs adorn and enhance the beauty and majestic power of the animals he chooses for his paintings. In contrast, and for the upcoming group exhibition, Ng will feature smaller animals interacting with tropical fruits. Expect the influence of the ‘Batik Series’ carvings to feature in unusual ways.

Sacred City Coming Of Age If you’re visiting Berlin, be sure to catch photographer Frank Thiel’s exhibition at the Blain Southern Gallery. ‘Quinceañeras’ marks Thiel’s first return to portrait photography in over 20 years. Examining the ‘Quince’ tradition in Cuba, a lavish turning of age ceremony for 15-yearold girls, Thiel pictures young women in decadent outfits, standing in front of decaying buildings and closed shops. Contrasting the women with their environment, Thiel’s series explores a feeling of uncertainty for the future shared by the nation and by the individuals pictured.

Tourist Traps goingplacesmagazine.com | 30 | June 2018
I went to Disneyland back in the 1980s. The spirit of the self-proclaimed “Happiest place on earth” had gripped my friends and me long before our arrival. We were so excited that we had run very far from our car before we realised that none of us had even closed the doors. It was a thrill to see my childhood hero Donald Duck but I was too shy to approach him and ask him the important question: how come he never wears any trousers but when he gets out of the shower he always wraps a towel around himself? What’s that about? When I visited Disneyland, its rides were in the process of being changed from the oldfashioned and mechanically driven to the more hi-tech flight simulators with front projection that make you feel like you’re actually flying. Therefore, the queue for ‘Mission to Mars’ was very short because, we discovered, it was very old. I was overwhelmed with excitement as the voice counted down to our lift-off on our epic journey to the Red Planet. But the old-fashioned ride could only simulate the intense pull of a lift-off by popping our seats downwards. I saw everyone in the room look at their seats and ask, “What just happened?” If that’s how you get to Mars, then I don’t think I want to go. Disneyland is fun but it is the ultimate tourist trap. Once they got us inside, we could only spend our Disney Dollars on Disney food. They hold you hostage with their promise of neverending happiness and if you have children, then Disney has willing accomplices because kids never want to leave the Magic Kingdom. After a few hours, we felt drained by the constant heightened state of happiness. It makes you delirious and I was getting worried about myself when I started finding Cinderella’s mice friends a bit too attractive (I knew I didn’t have a chance with Cinderella herself). We decided to leave and search for something more “real”.
But what is real and authentic in the age of mass tourism? As tourists we are always being funnelled into places that promise the genuine local experience but which the locals have actually long since stopped visiting themselves. As a famous military leader once said, “It’s a trap!” I visited a tourist trap recently in Thailand. Thailand is the world’s second most popular tourist destination (after France) and it’s not surprising because they do tourism very well. Thais don’t feel the need to educate their visitors and instead they enable tourists to have the experience they want. The Bangkok floating markets are justly famous because buying delicious food from a boat is surely the most picturesque way to go shopping, but with the advent of cars and supermarkets, Thais no longer need the inconvenience of going to the shops on a boat. So a facsimile of the floating market has been built 100 kilometres outside Bangkok for the tourists. A mere 15 years ago, the floating markets were still a genuinely viable part of Bangkok life, but now, they’re a reminder of how far we have come and how much we have lost. It’s still fun in its own way but would I visit a floating market if we had one in KL? Probably not. Where got air-con?
Mass tourism and the tourist trap feel like they must be exclusive to our modern age with its easy Internet booking and affordable flights. But visitors to 17th-century Venice complained that the island had too many tourists, so perhaps the problem has always existed. In Thailand, while on our way to the floating market, we stopped at the Maeklong Railway Market. Crammed along both sides of the railway track were the fruits and meats of a market. The freshly butchered chicken was a tell-tale sign that this was a market for the locals because what kind of tourist buys fresh meat? And then the stall owners pulled their goods and sunshades back and the 9 am train to Bangkok edged slowly past. I had seen this before on the Internet but assumed that it no longer existed. The delicious and amazingly cheap bowl of noodles was an added bonus. I don’t know how much longer the Maeklong Railway Market will survive (there is a supermarket nearby) but seeing it reminded me that gems can still be found while on holiday. Not everything can be a Disneyland promising constant happiness but real people continue to live real lives and we can find delightful moments if we’re lucky. Mostly, I was reminded that it’s not the destination that matters, it’s the journey. ■

GETTING AROUND Go Metro The massive Moscow Metro is not only an efficient form of transportation, it’s also an impressive artistic and historical display. Metro stations are decked out with marble columns, mosaics and bronze statues celebrating Soviet history and culture. The trains are frequent and speedy, costing only RUB55 (USD0.89/ RM3.50) per ride. goingplacesmagazine.com | 32 | June 2018
Apps & Maps The most popular mobile phone app for ordering taxis is Yandex. Taxi, which is easy to use with its interface in English. Lonely Planet’s Guides app provides detailed maps and professional reviews of museums, restaurants, bars, and historic sites.

HEART OF MOSCOW Red Square The centrepiece of Moscow is this expansive area of cobblestones, with majestic buildings all around. Ogle the iconic St Basil’s Cathedral, with its intricate brickwork and multi-coloured domes. Pay your respects to the founder of the Soviet state at Lenin’s Mausoleum or do a spot of shopping in GUM, the former State Department Store, which is now a fancy shopping mall.

The red-brick Kremlin is the founding site of Moscow and the seat of power for most of Russian history. Inside, gold-domed churches and plush palaces contain holy icons and royal tombs, while the Arsenal Museum is crammed with Imperial treasures. On the
way out, stroll through Alexander Garden and catch the changing of the guard (hourly) at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Wild Urbanism Moscow’s newest attraction is Zaryadye Park on the banks of the Moscow River. A walk through the park might traverse all four of Russia’s climate zones – forest, steppe, tundra and wetlands – all within a few blocks of Red Square. Don’t miss the innovative multimedia exhibits and ethereal ice sculpture gallery.
CULTURAL CLASSICS Lords Of The Dance Moscow is renowned for its classical performing arts, especially opera and ballet. And no company is more celebrated than the Bolshoi Theatre. Top tip: You can see equally ravishing performances – sometimes for significantly lower prices – at other theatres around town such as the State Kremlin Palace or Stanislavsky NemirovichDanchenko Music Theatre.
Art Museums Art lovers can choose between two massive museums showing off extensive collections of art through the ages. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery for a comprehensive look at Russian iconography, painting, and decorative arts. Across the river, the Pushkin Gallery of Fine Arts is the city’s premier collection of international works.

Moscow In The Movies Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears is an Academy Award-winning classic (1981) about three smalltown girls who come to the capital to make their fortunes. Thirty years later, Elena (2011) explores similar themes of class and society in modern Moscow. Winzavod is now an artistic hub of avant-garde galleries; the former glassware plant Flacon is a modern market of funky shops, cool cafés and other oddball attractions. Once a blight on the capital’s cityscape, these post-industrial centres are now hot spots for Russian art and design.

MODERN MOSCOW Outdoor Living When the weather is fine, Muscovites come out to play. Whether it’s ping pong, beach volleyball, bike riding, or swing dancing, the action goes down at the Gorky Park riverside. Across the street, wander through Muzeon sculpture park, littered with new art and old Soviet statesmen.
Nowhere is the future of Moscow more evident than at the Moscow International Business Centre, better known as Moscow City, the massive riverside development shooting up west of the centre. Some of the 20 or so skyscrapers are among Europe’s tallest, dwarfing the Stalinist ‘Seven Sisters’ that also dot the skyline.

After dark, the place to be is Red October, a former chocolate factory turned nightlife mecca. The restaurants are good, but the bars and clubs are even better (and the Moscow views are the best), especially at Bar Strelka or Rolling Stone. If you prefer to hunker down with a pint of Guinness and watch football, you’ll find what you need at Tap & Barrel, a classic Irish pub.
TOURIST ESSENTIALS Hotels Historic & Modern Several atmospheric, historic hotels are placed conveniently close to Red Square such as the storied art-nouveau Metropol Hotel and the luxurious Four Seasons Moscow, a replica of a Soviet-era anomaly. Alternatively, check into a new breed of boutique hotels, such as Brick Design Hotel or Moss Boutique Hotel.

EAT & DRINK Haute-russe Cuisine Sample the cuisine of tsars at Pushkin Café, an exquisite restaurant housed in a replica 19th-century mansion. Feast on delicacies such as baked sturgeon, veal rissole, or beef stroganoff, washed down with plenty of vodka. Top tip: If dinner is too pricey, head next door to the patisserie for a delightful (and slightly more affordable) dessert.
Georgian Cuisine The highlight of your Moscow culinary adventure may not be Russian at all, but rather food from the Caucasian country of Georgia. The cuisine is rich and spicy, featuring grilled meats, fresh herbs and ground walnuts. Sample it at simple joints like Minzandari or at more upscale restaurants such as Elardzhi.
Traditional Russian souvenirs include Orthodox icons, Soviet military paraphernalia, and Matryoshka nesting dolls. Nowadays, artisans paint the latter with many non-traditional faces, including your favourite football team or contemporary politicians. You’ll find the biggest selection of souvenirs at Izmaylovsky Market.

Most hotels, restaurants and shops accept credit cards. You can exchange US dollars or Euros for Roubles at the airport or at most banks, but it’s easier to withdraw them directly from your bank account at an ATM, or Bankomat
Talk The Talk
Most hotels and many restaurants have at least some English-speaking staff. But if you learn a few phrases, the locals will appreciate the effort. Hello = Zdravstvuyte Please = Pozhaluysta Yes/No = Da/Nyet Where is ...? = Gde nakhoditsya ...? Good Morning = Dobroye utro Goodbye = Do svidaniya
What To Wear
Muscovites are a stylish lot, often showing off top names in European and American fashion. Look sharp when going out for a night on the town. By contrast, dress modestly when visiting working churches. Shorts and short skirts are generally prohibited, and women are required to cover their head with a scarf.

Meets Convenience Tucked along Jalan Binjai in Kuala Lumpur, PNB Perdana Hotel and Suites On The Park is well poised to cater to families and businesspeople, says its general manager Muhammad Taha Zainal. Words Eris Choo | Photography Goh Seng Chong
Tell us more about yourself.
I’ve been in the hospitality industry for over 25 years, working in city hotels, international resorts, serviced apartments and five-star hotels in different positions and departments. I joined PNB in 2007, when this hotel was still known as PNB Darby Park. It was rebranded to PNB Perdana On The Park in 2015. Currently, my role here as general manager involves overseeing all aspects of operations, from finance to human resources, sales and marketing, front office and housekeeping, to food and beverage, maintenance and security. What can you tell us about PNB Perdana Hotel and Suites On The Park?
We are essentially a four-star hotel with a serviced apartment concept. This is well suited

for business clients as well as families. Fifty-six percent of our clients are corporate guests, while the rest are leisure travellers, guests from the government sector as well as from the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions industry. We have a healthy balance of nationalities, with the majority being Malaysians and 40 percent made up of international guests. What can guests expect when they stay at the hotel?
All they need to bring is their luggage, and we’ll take care of the rest! There are 338 suites in total, featuring one, two, three and four-bedroom configurations. For convenience, all suites come with fully equipped kitchenettes, a spacious living and dining area, a workstation and free Wi-fi. There
is also an in-house self-service launderette and convenience store. In terms of facilities, we have a gymnasium, tennis courts and squash courts, a saltwater-based swimming pool on level nine, and a games room on level eight. For meetings, there are eight function rooms, some of which come complete with audio visual equipment. We have two dining outlets to cater to different preferences. 39 Restaurant on the rooftop serves Malay fusion cuisine and offers beautiful views of

PNB Perdana Hotel and Suites On the Park | IN PROFILE
What distinguishes PNB Perdana Hotels and Suites On The Park from other hotels in KL?
The unique thing about our hotel is that it offers the homeliness and privacy of a serviced apartment, but the facilities and services of a hotel. This is why 20 percent of our guests are here for the long term, with some having stayed with us since we opened in the year 2000. Our location along Jalan Binjai is strategic as it is an exclusive residential area that is still close to the city centre. There are LRT lines nearby, which make it convenient for guests to get around, as well as a new MRT line in the works. As a Muslim-friendly hotel, we provide added comfort and assurance to our local and Middle Eastern guests, many of whom are Muslim. We do not serve alcohol, our restaurants are halalcertified, and there is an emphasis on familyfriendly offerings and facilities. Solo female travellers can rest easy knowing that safety is our utmost priority as all floors are equipped with a computerised key system and closedcircuit TV surveillance cameras, in addition to 24-hour security.
The unique thing about our hotel is that it offers the homeliness and privacy of a serviced apartment, but the facilities and services of a hotel. However, it can also be a rewarding career so our challenge is to change their perceptions, and to groom and guide a new generation into accomplished hoteliers. You’ve been in the industry for a long time. What keeps you going?
Passion is a must in any field. This is why we say that our mother’s cooking is the best because it is made and prepared with love. I constantly stress to my staff that all that they do should come from the heart. This applies to everything, from welcoming guests to cleaning the rooms. In Islam, we call it barakah, or blessing, which comes from serving others. You don’t get that in most industries. As a homegrown brand, how do you showcase your Malaysian identity?
What do you think are some of the challenges faced by the hotel industry at the moment?
Aside from being Syariah-compliant to cater to our Muslim guests, we also have promotions at our restaurants throughout the year, where we bring in chefs from other PNB hotels and resorts for a ‘cross exchange’. For example, we may have guest chefs from Hotel Perdana Kota Bharu come over to KL to prepare special Kelantanese dishes for guests staying here, and vice versa.
I think the biggest challenge, not just for hotels but other industries in general, is getting well-trained manpower. We fully support hiring local talents, but many youths do not want to become hoteliers due to the long hours involved.
The design of our hotels is another aspect that showcases our Malaysian heritage. Kinrara Resort and PNB Ilham feature strong elements of Malay architecture, while in Hotel Perdana

3
Kota Bharu, we have over 500 artworks by local artisans displayed throughout the hotel. Perdana Hotels and Suites On The Park is one of the hotels under the Permodalan Nasional Berhad group. Could you tell us more about the group’s other hospitality establishments?
There are seven hotels and resorts under the group. Perdana Hotel and Suites On The Park in Kuala Lumpur, Hotel Perdana in Kota Bharu and Hotel Seri Petaling in Selangor are city hotels in different categories. We also have several resorts, namely Kinrara Resort and Impian Morib in Selangor, PNB Ilham in Negeri Sembilan and Lanjut Beach and Golf Resort in Pahang. We are currently in the process of integrating and rebranding to achieve similar standards across all our brands, so guests can expect exciting things in the coming year. Disruptive technology such as ride-sharing and taxis, has changed the way many industries operate. Do you see this trend with hotels?
The emergence of homestays and Airbnbs as well as online travel agents have definitely affected the hotel industry – but like it or not, they’re here to stay. Although their price points may be lower, I believe that we still have an edge when it comes to expertise, premium services and the quality of our products. Our three-bedroom suites, for example, offer plenty of space, up to 193 square metres (2,077 square feet), whilst boasting a level of luxury that will appeal to guests.

the Kuala Lumpur skyline. 10 Binjai on the ground floor is a chic coffeehouse with an al-fresco dining concept, while the lounge is where we serve snacks, cakes and pastries for guests who need to grab a quick bite.
Hotels have to adapt and keep up with the times. In this day and age where everything is just a smartphone tap away, our website has to be attractive and interactive. I spend half an hour in the evening looking at social media and news on hospitality trends around the world, and try to see what we can implement here at the hotel. Our rates have to be competitive as well, because there are many up-and-coming players in town. What’s next for the hotel?
We previously upgraded 226 suites, and the balance of our suites as well as the gym facilities will be renovated later this year. We are constantly improving ourselves to offer better services and facilities to guests. I believe that our offerings, convenient location and readily available infrastructure and logistic arrangements within the area will all come together to deliver the best experience possible for travellers and guests staying at PNB Perdana Hotels and Suites On The Park. ■

Boasting an average of 283 days of sunshine every year, Brisbane has a deep appreciation for the outdoors and a climate that sets it apart from its southern Australian sister cities. With hundreds of walks, parks and beaches, visitors to Brisbane will find it difficult to resist stepping outside. Making the most of a mild climate, Brisbane embraces an alfresco lifestyle, but a laid-back vibe doesn’t mean it lacks sophistication. South Bank is the cultural and recreational hub of the city. Originally the site for the 1988 World Expo, South Bank was converted into a public space with 17 hectares of parklands, restaurants and buildings designed for arts and culture by local Brisbane architect Robin Gibson.

The perfect places to discover Brisbane’s edgy art scene are the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA). Both buildings adjacent to the Brisbane River are a short stroll from the central business district (CBD) over the Victoria Bridge. Opened in December 2006, GOMA exhibits artwork from Australia and overseas, with a focus on the contemporary. Meanwhile, walking below the nearby Queensland Museum’s suspended life-sized
humpback whale gives perspective to the size of these marine mammals and other interesting exhibits, including a dinosaur. Musicals or symphony concerts are performed at the nearby Queensland Performing Art Complex (QPAC). South Bank is famous for Australia’s only beach in the middle of the city, Streets Beach. Patrolled by lifeguards, the beach offers a safe, unique aquatic experience minutes from the CBD. Brisbane’s compact layout and six pedestrian bridges connecting to inner-city precincts make light work of exploring the river city without the need to travel far to experience adventure. The heart of the city is the Brisbane River. Bending and winding its way for 15 kilometres, the river feeds into the ocean at Moreton Bay; the vibrant business district is built on the river’s brown watery banks. Being on the river itself can be an adventure. The CityCats (Brisbane City Council ferries) glide effortlessly along and are an effective means of transport up and down the river. the Brisbane River provides spectacular views of Brisbane’s popular locales, including South Bank, the Wheel of Brisbane, the Kangaroo Point Cliffs and the underbelly of the Story Bridge. The Kangaroo Point cliffs form a dramatic backdrop from the CBD side. These 20-metre cliffs were formed from a volcanic eruption some 230 million years ago. Throughout the 1800s, the area was used as a quarry, where volcanic rock was extracted. These rocks form the exterior of a few of Brisbane’s heritage-listed buildings, including St Mary’s Anglican Church at Kangaroo Point and St Stephens Cathedral in the city. Today, the cliffs are a recreational area popular with abseilers scaling its surface. The top of the cliffs provides fabulous views of the river, city and mountains, including Mount Coot-tha, seven kilometres away.
June 2018_Explore_Brisbane02.indd 39
Mount Coot-tha, at 287 metres above sea level, is the highest peak within the city’s urban perimeter. The Lookout provides a panoramic view of the snaking Brisbane River, wrapping its watery body around the sparkling cluster of skyscrapers before journeying under the Story Bridge and out to Moreton Bay. Climbing the Story Bridge, the largest steel bridge constructed in Australia, is possible with Story Bridge Adventure climb. A two-hour climb to the top span on the cantilevered bridge delivers 360-degree views of Moreton Bay, the Glass House Mountains and Mount Coot-tha. Beyond the city limits, inviting destinations ranging from white sandy beaches and pristine coastal retreats to rainforest paradises are within easy reach for a day trip or an overnight stay. For serenity, visit the Enoggera Reservoir in the D’aguilar National Park, only 10 kilometres northwest of the city centre. Originally built as a dam in 1866, the man-made lake is the perfect place to swim or launch a canoe or kayak.

with individual charm and unique attractions. Montville is a rustic town with quaint shops and cafés, just over an hour’s drive from the Brisbane CBD. Before taking the exit into Montville, Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve offers incredible views of the volcanic peaks of the Glass House Mountains. Cooler temperatures are found in the World Heritage-listed Springbrook and Tamborine National Parks in the Gold Coast Hinterland, filled with natural wonders, including stunning waterfalls and vegetation. Discover native wildlife, including glow-worms, found only in rainforest areas of southeast Queensland, an hour’s drive south of Brisbane’s CBD. Brisbane’s cosmopolitan eating scene makes the most of its sun-soaked lifestyle. South Bank’s Stokehouse Q embodies all elements of relaxed Brisbane dining, its menu inspired by the Mediterranean and Europe. For a different menu incorporating local flora and fauna, Little Big House sits in a typical Queensland architectural building.

Located in the heart of the city with the finest views of the Brisbane River and Story Bridge, Il Centro is a restaurant that’s been serving Italian fare with a distinctive Queensland twist for over 26 years, using fresh local ingredients. The signature dish is the sand crab lasagne. Beyond the city to the north of Brisbane are the Eat Street Markets. Over 150 shipping containers have been transformed into cafés, bars and stalls selling craft and assorted items. Food is the main attraction; with almost every country’s cuisine covered, from dumplings to curries, Turkish to Danish, even the fussiest of foodies should be satisfied. The inner-city village of West End, less than a 15-minute walk from South Bank, is a culinary smorgasbord. This quirky neighbourhood began as the place where ethnic migrants of the 1960s and 70s – the Greeks, Italians, Russians, Chinese – chose to settle. The dining scene is as diverse as the community. The Gun Shop Café is not selling firearms (although it did from 1954 to 1997) but is all about Canadian brioche, French toast with caramelised bananas, and other delectable creations. Billy Kart has a seasonal menu focusing on local produce, bistro-style. Its ricotta pancakes are very much like the rest of Brisbane, difficult to resist. ■

Transportation Tips Getting around Brisbane is easy via public transport. A Translink Gocard allows travel on all Translink bus, train and ferry services. Gocards can be purchased from any Queensland Rail stations, online, over the phone or at selected retailers. Free Transport A free inner-city bus called the City Loop and Spring Hill Loop circles the city every 10 minutes and stops at destinations in the CBD and Spring Hill precincts between 7 am and 6 pm weekdays. What To Wear As Brisbane is a cosmopolitan city, casual attire is generally accepted. Most locals dress according to the weather, which for nine months of the year is mild.

Around The World In
Five Eids
With nearly a quarter of the planet’s people celebrating Eid al-Fitr this month, celebrations around the world are as diverse as the Muslims observing them. Words Tharik Hussain | Photography Getty Images

Eid al-Fitr, the three-day festival marking the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, is the most eagerly anticipated date on the Muslim calendar. It brings to a close a month of abstinence and pious observation, and begins a period of indulgence when Muslims eat special foods, give generously and adorn the nicest clothes. Praying is also important – in the form of a special Eid congregational morning prayer – as is spending time with the family and visiting relatives. But with almost two billion Muslims residing in places as distinct as Sydney in Australia and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, Eid celebrations vary across the Muslim world. We take a look at Muslims celebrating Eid al-Fitr in five very culturally different countries – Muslim and nonMuslim – revealing a beautiful tapestry of global Islamic festive diversity.
TUNISIA Eid al-Fitr preparations begin from around the 19th day of Ramadan in Tunisia. “That’s when people start preparing sweets for Eid; some cook it at home and others use the local bakery for bigger batches,” explains Badr Haddaji, whose family is from Kairouan, the holiest city in Tunisia. The morning of Eid Seghir – young Eid – as Eid al-Fitr is known in Tunisia, begins at the cemetery. Families get up early to visit their deceased relatives, taking with them plenty of loose change for the poor who congregate near the cemetery, knowing a generous sadakah (charitable) handout is likely. This is followed by the obligatory Eid prayers. Fortunate Tunisians living near the coast can attend Eid prayers organised on the beach.
June 2018_Explore_Eid04.indd 42
For young Tunisians, Eid is a day to hanker for as much money from relatives as possible and then spend it in the bustling Eid markets filled with toys for the occasion. As a national holiday, Eid allows Tunisians to spend the day dressed in their freshest new clothes and visiting family, when the only pastime is eating and drinking. “All day we basically drink coffee and eat sweets. Because our stomachs are still adjusting from the fast, only in the evening we have a big meal,” says Badr. The most famous Tunisian Eid sweets are gherayeba and bashkouti, baked cookies and biscuits.
1 BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA It is the sound of a cannon, harking back to the Ottoman era, that signals the end of Ramadan in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and announces Ramazanski Bajram – like the Chinese Uyghurs, Bosnians also use the Turkish word for ‘holiday’. Hardly a surprise, given Bosnia was ruled by Ottoman Turks for over four centuries.
2
“Preparation for Ramadan begins from the 15th day. In Bosnia, we say if you haven’t started preparing for Bajram by this day, you will not be ready!” explains Elmedin Music, a Theology graduate from The Faculty of Islamic Studies Sarajevo. Houses are cleaned, new clothes are bought and food is prepared. The Eid staples of borek (stuffed spiral pastry) and baklava (sweet layered pastry with nuts) are also Ottoman in origin. At least two days of Eid al-Fitr are national holidays in Bosnia with the first day beginning early, straight after fajr (sunrise) prayer.

Nasheeds, kutbahs and recitals can be heard across Bosnian towns and cities, helping to fill the time until the Eid prayer is performed, when Bosnians will arrive dressed in new clothes; some men revive the Ottoman-era fez hat and patterned waistcoat for the occasion. Afterwards, coffee shops are filled as friends greet each other with ‘bajram barecola’ and catch up over thick Bosnian coffee. Many Bosnians begin the family time by first visiting the graves of deceased relatives and then congregating for lunch at the family’s eldest matriarch’s home. This is when the children begin to vie for their Eid cash gifts. The rest of the day is spent visiting relatives, and in the evenings, Bosnian youths gather with friends in town centres to attend Eid nasheed concerts, amongst others.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 44 | June 2018
The second day of Eid in Bosnia is dedicated to the martyrs of the 1992-1995 war. Imams across the country lead visits to the many memorial sites and cemeteries, where Bosnians are able to honour them.
CHINA With at least 10 of the nearly 60 ethnicities in China confessing the Islamic faith, Eid is also a part of the Chinese calendar, especially in Muslim-dominant regions like Xinjiang and Ningxia provinces, where Eid is a public holiday and even tolls on roads are suspended. Muslims in these regions are of Turkic and Mongol origin, and the local Eid customs are strongly influenced by these ethnicities. The
Turkic Uyghurs, for example, use the Turkish word bayram (holiday) to refer to Eid al-Fitr – Uraza Bayram. Many mosques lay on Eid feasts of pilaf (rice cooked in lamb fat) after the morning Eid prayer. Uyghurs then fill the streets to the sound of bullhorns and dutars (lute-like instruments), dancing to celebrate the end of a long, hard month of abstinence. This is one of the few Muslim cultures around the world where music has traditionally played a key role in Eid festivities. Everybody then heads off to visit family, starting with their own most elderly relatives. The rest of the day is spent eating special local Eid food, including the delicious lamb kewap (spiced kebab) and sangze (fried, twisted, sweetened dough noodles) – for which every family has its own traditional recipe.
UNITED KINGDOM “I love the great outdoor Eid festivals that get laid on by local authorities. Most big cities with a large Muslim community will have an ‘Eid in the Park’, and this is great fun to attend with all the family,” Kazi Hussain, an east Londoner sums up the growing tradition in Britain of large ‘public’ Eid festivals aimed at bringing together the country’s diverse Muslim community. These are often preceded by large open-air prayers in parks across the country, from London to Bradford. There, British Muslims arrive in their finest Eid outfits, often signifying their ethnic roots, and greet each other with the phrase ‘Eid Mubarak’ (blessed celebration).

9 With British Muslims hailing from all over the world, and often far from their extended families, the civic Eid events mean everyone has somewhere special to go on the day. These festivals brim with food from around the world and gift stalls. There’s usually a central stage where entertainment includes cultural dancing, music and even comedy. Children are kept busy with face painting, henna art and mini fairgrounds.

Muslims who have resided longer in Britain may visit graves of dead relatives, before going for lunch at their parents’ home, armed with cash or gifts for younger children – the latter, a largely new phenomenon inspired by local Western traditions, as is the sending of Eid cards.

In mega-cities like London where diverse ethnic cultures thrive, Eid food varies depending on the neighbourhood. In London’s east end for example, with its large Bangladeshi community, savoury specialities like the samosa (stuffed pastry triangles) and sweets like the Moghulinspired gulab jamun (dairy-based syrup balls) are firm Eid favourites.
June 2018_Explore_Eid04.indd 45
MALAYSIA In Malaysia, Hari Raya Aidilfitri lasts an entire month, with the key customs taking place in the first few days.
On the first day, Eid prayers are performed across the country and Malaysians dress in traditional Eid outfits known as baju raya, often with entire families matching these in colour. The outfits have five buttons to represent the five pillars of Islam. In some states, Eid outfits have only one button to represent the oneness of God. The Eid prayer is followed by a deeply moving Malaysian tradition of asking one’s parents and family members for forgiveness. Malaysians then visit the cemeteries to read Quranic chapters over the graves of their dead relatives. “This is the most heart-moving part of Eid,” says Bobby Ramli, a Malaysian from the southern state of Johor, who admits what he loves most about Eid though, comes afterwards. “Fireworks and non-stop eating (when visiting friends and family) are my favourite things to do on Eid!” Visiting family and friends to bid them Selamat Hari Raya in the tradition of open houses, a concept unique to Malaysia, locals like Bobby indulge in food such as ketupat (glutinous rice) with beef rendang, and kuih raya (cookies). ■ About the writer Tharik Hussain is a Britain-based writer specialising in Muslim travel and Islamic heritage. Kandy was such an exciting city to explore and photograph. Witnessing the religious celebrations at the Temple of the Tooth was a feast for the senses – the smell of incense, the sight of colourful clothes and the beat of drums. In contrast, shooting sunrise at Kandy Lake, and exploring the botanical gardens was an extremely peaceful and relaxing experience.

be focused on the first World Cup to be held in Eastern Europe. The 12 World Cup stadiums are all in the west of the country to avoid excessive travelling times, but even then, some journeys will be long. It is 1,930 kilometres from St Petersburg in the north to Sochi in the south, and 2,500 kilometres from Kaliningrad in the west to Ekaterinburg on the Europe/Asia border.
But significant investment in Russian football, including funding for new stadiums, has paved the way for the country to hold the World Cup. Ten of the 12 arenas to be used in this year’s competition have been built in the past 10 years.
The 64-match event will also see games in Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Saransk, Samara, Volgograd and Rostov-on-Don, while Moscow is the only city with two venues – the Luzhniki Stadium, where the opening and the final match will be played, and the Spartak Stadium.

Many will hope that Messi is involved at the Luzhniki when the tournament reaches its climax. The Argentina forward, who is already considered by some to be the finest player ever, turns 31 during the tournament, so this is likely to be his last World Cup in his prime. Messi will aim to emulate Diego Maradona, another diminutive, left-footed Argentine with phenomenal dribbling and passing skills: the latter cemented his reputation as an all-time great by almost single-handedly leading Argentina to a World Cup triumph in 1986. Messi was equally influential for his side in qualifying for this year’s tournament – the team struggled badly when he was absent through injury and suspension. Luckily, he was on hand to hit a dramatic hat-trick in the decisive final game away to Ecuador to give Argentina the victory that earned their place at the finals. Elsewhere in South America, there were no such difficulties for Brazil, who won the region’s qualifying group by a distance. There is always expectation of World Cup success in Brazil, whose team is the record five-time winner, although memories remain fresh of their historic and humiliating 7-1 defeat to Germany in the semi-finals on home soil four years ago.

The most attractive group match pits a formidable Spain against Portugal, their Iberian neighbours. The pair have won the past three European Championships between them. Significant challenges may also come from Belgium, whose golden generation of players such as Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard are at their peak, and from France, who possess a wealth of young talent. However, England’s 52year search for any major trophy to add to their 1966 World Cup triumph looks likely to continue.

Russia, despite the Soviet Union’s strong showings, have made little impact at the World Cup since the Soviet break-up but a weak group that also features Uruguay, Egypt and Saudi Arabia gives them a chance of progressing. The presence of Tunisia and Morocco, alongside Egypt and the Saudis, makes this the first World Cup with four Arab nations, while there are also three Nordic countries – Iceland, Sweden and Denmark – for the first time. Iceland, making their first World Cup appearance along with Panama, are the smallest ever nation to qualify for the competition. Their population of just 340,000 is almost 600 times smaller than that of Nigeria, their group rivals.

Some will lament the absence of traditional giants Italy and the Netherlands, but the likes of Iceland, Panama and Peru – returning after a 36-year absence – will enrich the event. Let the festival begin. ■

Oliver Lopez | CHEF’S CUT
The Accidental Chef Being a chef was never on the table for Oliver Lopez. Now, he heads the kitchens of one of Malaysia’s top resort destinations.
Some chefs are born. Others are made. Just ask Oliver Lopez. The affable Group Chef of Resorts World Genting (RWG) vividly recalls his arrival at the hill resort down to the exact date: 15 December 1983. It was the first time Lopez had been out of his southern Malaysian hometown, Melaka. “I took a bus from Kuala Lumpur. The roads were windy and everywhere I looked, there was jungle,” he recounts, adding there were only two hotels in Genting at the time. With no formal training in the culinary arts, all he had was a willingness to learn. He started off as a kitchen trainee at the resort’s coffeehouse, before working his way up the ranks. Listening to the chef share his experiences, it’s hard to imagine his career was born out of necessity rather than passion. “I come from a poor family. My only interest in cooking came from helping my mother out when she made her traditional Portuguese dishes,” he explains. After finishing secondary school, he headed to Genting to look for a job. Once in the RWG kitchens, however, Lopez was inspired by the executive chefs. “They commanded the whole kitchen, and everyone respected them. I wanted to be like them,” he describes of his younger self. One fateful Christmas eve, he made the decision that would shape his life. It was the young Lopez’s first Christmas away from home, and as he made porridge in a big, aluminium pot, it occurred to him that he was
June 2018_Chef's Cut04.indd 57
missing out on celebrating Christmas with his family. “It was hard. I cried. It was then that I decided that if I was going to give up on my holidays and time with loved ones, I must make it in life as a chef,” he quips. Today, 35 years on, Lopez, together with six executive chefs oversees all 48 dining establishments under the RWG umbrella, with over 1,200 kitchen staff. He supervises major annual events, including VVIP dinners and festive functions at the theatre-style 3,500-seat Genting International Convention Centre, Malaysia’s largest column-free Grand Ballroom.

Lopez headed the setting up of the recently opened Malaysian Food Street, Malaysian Food Street 2 as well as Medan Selera – RWG’s ‘food-court’ style establishments. When the much anticipated Burger and Lobster opened its first outlet in Malaysia at Genting Sky Avenue, he played a pivotal role in menu research and development, coming up with the Chilli Lobster dish and Durian Tempura, both of which are only available here. As Group Chef, Lopez is heavily involved in the overall planning for all F&B outlets, ensuring that the kitchens are running efficiently. This may include deciding on the kitchen’s layout, the positions of the different cooking stations to improve on workflow, menu planning as well as staff training. He heads the resort’s Central Production Kitchen, a behemoth facility as large as three football fields, which produces on average 30,000 meals daily to cater to RWG patrons, and where chefs

from different outlets work together to create specialised menus. With the opening of Genting Sky Avenue and dining facilities at the upcoming 20th Century Fox Theme Park, Lopez’s responsibilities have taken on new heights. He is also actively involved in upcoming restaurants, including Harry Ramsden London Fish & Chips, Il Lago, American Steak House, Jom Makan, Highline Bar, and more. Other job responsibilities include sourcing for raw materials, looking for suppliers, managing costs, and ensuring the quality of ingredients is up to par. “We have Chinese, Western, local and international restaurants, just to name a few. I have to decide if a particular ingredient can be used across all of them. Sometimes, a Chinese chef may want an ingredient of a certain grade, while a Western chef wants another,” he says, adding that getting the right balance was a constant challenge.
As a rule of thumb, Lopez is liberal with his chefs, believing in the abilities of each to captain their restaurants efficiently. “For me, the chef de cuisine is in charge of a restaurant. I’m only there to advise them,” he states. “The beauty of working at RWG is that we have a good mix of talented chefs from different backgrounds who specialise in various cuisines. Hence, we are able to share resources to produce top-quality signature dishes fit for any occasion,” he enthuses. When it comes to cooking, however, Lopez admits he is more inclined toward traditional techniques and flavours, having trained under an executive chef who followed the classical French style. “My cooking style is very simple. Taste comes first,” he says, adding that he loves working with fresh ingredients and herbs. Although his forte remains Continental cuisine, Lopez is not averse to whipping up local delights. “If you ask me to fling a roti canai, I’m sure I
could do that!” he laughs, attributing his skills to his years working in different kitchens. With operational things to look after daily, Lopez remarks wistfully that he does not venture into the kitchen as often as he likes these days. Occasionally, he cooks for important guests or drops by as a ‘guest chef’ at one of the restaurants. He has a soft spot for The Olive, Genting Grand Hotel’s Continental fine-dining restaurant, having helmed it as an executive chef when it opened 12 years ago. Many of the establishment’s favourites such as its squid ink bread, mushroom soup and garlic butter escargot, are his creations, as is the Chilean sea bass – Lopez’s signature dish.
With no formal training in the culinary arts, all he had was a willingness to learn. He started off as a kitchen trainee at the resort’s coffeehouse, before working his way up the ranks.

is melted. Set aside for later use. Lopez is proud of all that he has achieved, the pinnacle being his win at the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards, where he walked away with the title of Best Executive Chef three years in a row, from 2010 to 2012. With years of experience under his belt, Lopez has a few pearls of wisdom to share with young, aspiring chefs. “Have patience. It’s great to have passion, but it’s equally important to gain experience,” he says, adding that one should not be discouraged to start from the bottom. He says young chefs should stay grounded, and not be drawn into pursuing celebrity chef ‘stardom’, as popularised by cooking shows in recent years. “It’s a high-pressure environment and you have to be prepared for sacrifices,” he says, recalling a hard lesson where a former executive chef he was training under threw a dish on the floor because the plate was not served warm. “Since then, I’ve never served a cold plate. Whatever needs to be served hot, must be hot. But I don’t believe in throwing plates at my chefs!” he laughs. He also constantly reminds his team to taste the food that they make. “If it’s not tasty for you, it’s not going to be tasty for the guest,” he says. Despite being trained in the classical style, Lopez is open to current trends. “I have a protégé, who is more of a modernist. Young chefs like to experiment with new things and fancy techniques. I’m fine with it, but I always tell them that the food needs to be good,” he concludes. ■

KakiDIY is inspiring us to get hands-on.
I was hoovering the living room when without warning, the hoover went silent. Never has silence been so deafening as when it would not switch back on. If I had been at a Kaki Repair event, I could have taken the hoover to Johnson Lam. Together we would first diagnose the problem with the machine, then I’d proceed to open it up, test out the possibilities of its sullen silence, and if possible, fix it myself. If successful, I'd have a working hoover, save money and be imbued with a sense of accomplishment. If not, I'd have done my best by the appliance, worked with my hands and learnt a new skill. A win-win scenario.
1.~2. Kaki Repair gives participants the space, guidance and tools to learn how to fix broken appliances and household goods on their own
Organised by online community project KakiDIY, Kaki Repair is a once-a-month event where participants can bring their broken appliances and household goods for a spot of fix-it-yourself repair. With the guidance of founder Lam and a group of volunteers, participants learn how to diagnose problems and repair items using available tools. "I started Kaki Repair as a totally free movement, so I take away the barrier of entry for anyone with an interest in DIY (Do-It-Yourself) work," says Lam, who has had to limit numbers due to overwhelming demand. He's chuffed to see new people joining as participants and volunteers, signalling a slow but steady growth in DIY interest. Most of the stuff that people bring are consumer electronics. Surprisingly, power adapters top the list, followed by house fans and power plugs.

Participants should know that they'll be getting their hands dirty. "It's important that participants know that this is a hands-on workshop and that they will be working on the items themselves," says Lam. So don't come expecting him and his team to fix your things for free.

After talking to participants, he has pinpointed three common excuses for not doing DIY repair work – not having the right tools, not having the space to do DIY projects, and not having the necessary skills. "That's why Kaki Repair works. I'm now giving you space, tools and guidance, so there are no more excuses," he says, laughing.

Kaki Repair is only one of the activities run by KakiDIY for DIY enthusiasts and makers. Founded in Malaysia by Lam, it seeks to gather individuals with a yen for tinkering and making stuff whilst sharing knowledge and inspiring each other. The rising DIY culture is inspiring a whole generation of designers, artists, hobbyists and entrepreneurs to become makers instead of just consumers. In the United States, the Maker Movement is huge and continually growing. Here, Lam is excited to promote and share ideas on reducing waste by making new products out of discarded items. "I have always had a passion for DIY. I like to fix things and build my own toys," he says. Back in the day, Lam was a prolific contributor to automotive forums, earning him the nickname DIY King. He used to drive around industrial areas, looking for discarded items that he could fashion into car performance parts. In 2012, he decided to expand his horizons and form his own community of DIY enthusiasts. Hence, KakiDIY came into being. Kaki is a slang term in the Malay language for a buddy with similar interests; in the Hokkien dialect, it loosely translates to 'yourself'. "I've always been interested in recycling, reusing resources and reducing waste, and have incorporated them into KakiDIY's objectives," says Lam. Through KakiDIY, community members share ideas online, hold workshops and classrooms and curate events for corporate clients. Its Facebook page currently has 30,000 followers, who follow the group's activities on this platform. Now, the community has a physical space in which to pursue their interests. Lam opened MakerLab (makerlab.my) in The School Jaya One in Petaling Jaya, where enthusiasts can gather to create, invent, share ideas and learn new skills. The lab is equipped with 3D printers and tools,

The rising DIY culture is inspiring a whole generation of designers, artists, hobbyists and entrepreneurs to become makers instead of just consumers. while offering regular classes and workshops, including drone and robotics classes. Lam's activities with KakiDIY got a real boost with a 13-part television series aired on national broadcaster RTM called Inovasi Hijau. In this Malaysian version of Home Improvement, Johnson and his co-star Che Puan Juliana Evans work on projects around the house using existing resources. In the first episode, Lam impresses her with his clever transformation of discarded wooden pallets into a coffee table. Despite his day job with a telecommunications company that includes extensive travelling, Lam tries to make time to initiate outreach programmes. When he can, he takes Kaki Repair into smaller towns and villages around the country with his cool MakerVan, a repair workshop on wheels. "I really draw energy from seeing someone else learning and doing something with their own ability. It drives me to do more," says the tireless Lam.
He attributes his energy and can-do spirit to his grandmother. "She was a source of inspiration for me. During the emergency, she moved into the jungle with six children where she built a house, chicken coop and even an oven, with whatever she could find or salvage. She taught me a lot about DIY work and about making do with whatever resources you have at hand." Lam has big ambitions for KakiDIY. He hopes that activities like Kaki Repair will be baby steps towards innovation. "I realised that perhaps the average Malaysian is not quite ready to jump into innovation and making new things. The more important thing right now is to allow people to take the first step of diagnosing problems with existing products and repair them instead of throwing them out. The big picture for KakiDIY is to build a better next generation." â–

Tradisi Hari Gawai
Warna-warni dan kepelbagaian upacara pada Hari Gawai membolehkan pengunjung menghayati tradisi lama rumah panjang. Teks Alexandra Wong | Terjemahan Yeo Li Shian | Foto Shutterstock
Rites & Rituals. Colourful, dramatic and ritual-rich, the Gawai Festival is the best time to immerse in the longhouse traditions of the Ibans. goingplacesmagazine.com | 64 | June 2018
Bagaikan pokok Krismas, semua dahannya indah dihiasi pelbagai objek. Disertai irama rancak ketukan dram, beliau mula mengayunkan parangnya lalu menebang sebatang dahan sebelum menyambar sebotol tuak (arak beras). Kawasan

The crowd gathered in the longhouse erupts in applause as the Tuai Gawai (Festival Leader) rises to his feet. Looking resplendent in a hornbill-feathered headdress, treebark vest and earth-coloured loincloth, he executes a series of leaps and turns around the mangosteen tree set up in the middle of the longhouse; its branches are loaded with items, like a Christmas tree. Accompanied by energetic drumming, he draws his machete, chops off a branch and plucks off a bottle of tuak (home-brewed rice wine), not unlike an Iban warrior triumphantly parading his trophy. I’m in Nanga Ukom, an Iban longhouse, to celebrate Gawai, and I’ve just witnessed the ranyai tree ceremony, a gift exchange rite that makes up part of the festival. Celebrated by the Dayaks – a collective name for Ibans, Bidayuhs and other ethnic subgroups that make up the largest indigenous community in the East Malaysian state of Sarawak – Gawai involves traditional rites performed by the elders, ancestral worship and much feasting to celebrate the end of the rice harvest and usher in a new year of bountiful goodness. Colourful, dramatic and exotic by turns, the Gawai Festival makes the perfect introduction to the unique longhouse lifestyle. Traditionally hunters-gatherers and fearsome warriors who expanded their territories through warfare, Ibans settled near rivers and streams in communal dwellings known as longhouses – essentially a series of family apartments built on stilts. With modernisation, it’s now common to find brick-and-concrete longhouses, especially near towns and cities. But more remote ones – which are not accessible by road – are still constructed from bamboo and wooden planks

Setelah sekian lama menghuni hutan belantara, masyarakat Iban juga dilengkapi dengan kemahiran dan pengetahuan khas dalam bidang botani. drawn from the forests in which the Ibans hunted. As with any self-contained social system, a longhouse has its set of rituals and laws called adat that govern every aspect of Iban life, from social interactions to family affairs and ceremonial occasions like Gawai. Preparations start at least a month ahead. Floor mats are woven from mengkuang (screwpine) leaves, heirlooms are hung on the walls; the air is thick with the fumes of cooking fires, where traditional delicacies like pansoh (bamboo shoots stuffed with rice or chicken, then cooked over firewood) and tuak (home-brewed rice wine) are prepared.

On the eve of Gawai, the longhouse population convenes. At midnight, the Tuai Gawai makes a toast to long life with tuak to percussion music. The ranyai tree ceremony follows, before the festival turns into an informal freefor-all with dancing, singing and drinking until dawn. The big day on 1 June starts on a solemn, intimate tone: Each family gathers in the living room to make offerings to the spirits in the form of piring, plates filled with food, which are hung in a basket until the end of Gawai. This ceremony is followed by tilik nasib (fortune-telling), in which two gunshots are fired – one to ward off evil spirits and another to entice the spirits to the offerings – before a purified pig is killed with a spear, and its liver removed and “interpreted”. A healthy organ portends good fortune for residents in the coming year.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 67 | June 2018
Centuries of living in the forest resulted in unique botanical knowledge that presentday Ibans still tap into. The mangosteen tree, for instance, is chosen for ranyai because its hardy branches can withstand even a onekilogramme tuak bottle without breaking.
The festivities may continue for weeks with outdoor sports such as blowpipe competitions, tugs-of-war, cock-fighting – every longhouse celebrates Gawai its own way. Many weddings take place, as it is rare for all members of the community to assemble at the longhouse at any one time. On the first day of June, every longhouse is open to visitors. Food and drink are served to all amid joyful toasting and singing – making Hari Gawai a truly Malaysian open house. Steeped with symbolism, the Gawai festival gives visitors a fascinating insight into a unique way of living. But for the Dayaks, their elaborate canon of rites and rituals means so much more, helping to foster positive values and preserve communal well-being and harmony. As a schoolboy in Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Malaysia’s eastern Sabah state, he pursued an interest in basketball but his natural athleticism proved too much for just one sport. He caught the attention of Shariman Abdullah, a former Sabah Football Association secretary and treasurer, who saw the makings of a footballer in him. “I had to train him from scratch (but) he was a fast learner,” Shariman was quoted as saying in the Sabahkini news portal in 2014. Soon, the pupil of the La Salle school in Kota Kinabalu was a regular fixture in Sabah’s state team and a few years later, he was vying for the position of goalkeeper in Malaysia’s national football squad with more established goalies, R. Arumugam and Ong Yu Tiang.
THE OLYMPICS THAT WASN’T Peter represented the Sabah state team from 1972 to 1993 and was a member of the national team that qualified for the 1980 Olympics. The qualification was widely celebrated in Malaysia but the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the ensuing boycott of the Moscow games put paid to Malaysia’s Olympic football hopes. During the qualifying round for the Moscow Olympics, Peter had put in a sturdy performance, holding off breakaway attacks from Brunei in a match Malaysia went on to win 3-1. Peter, the reserve goalkeeper, won his first full national cap in that match, just a few days shy of his 29th birthday. Match reports from the time also showed that he pulled two good saves in a goalless draw against Japan. Peter did not give many media interviews but one that survives from the time speaks volumes
about his down-to-earth personality. Asked by a New Straits Times reporter about his upcoming 29th birthday on April Fool’s Day in 1980, he said simply: “It’s no big deal, really. You have to be born on some day or other.” In a 2016 interview in the Malay-language daily Berita Harian, Peter’s widow Tracie Gom spoke of his disappointment at not going on to play at the Olympics. He had given a lot, going to train even right after his father’s death. He also had to train far away from where his wife and young children stayed, she added. In all, Peter earned 15 caps for Malaysia’s national side, playing from 1979 to 1981.
SABAH & BEYOND Through the early 1980s, the Sabah team was

a force to be reckoned with. Peter was among a bunch of Sabahan players to make ripples beyond state borders. It was hardly surprising when along with strikers James Wong and Hassan Sani, Peter got the call up to the national squad. It had been Peter’s one-handed save in a domestic league match, perhaps a throwback to his basketball-playing youth, that caught the attention of national coach Karl Heinz Weigang. In Sabah, Peter’s football career spanned 1972 to 1993, after which he was employed at the Sabah Sports Board, taking on various administrative roles. Peter was in the role of team motivator in 1996 when Sabah won the domestic football league for the first time. Born in 1951, Peter was the ninth of 10 children. He was a lifelong sportsman with a prowess in tennis, badminton, basketball and golf. He was also a devoted family man and a devout Catholic. Peter succumbed to a heart attack on 14 November 2014. He was 63. He is survived by his wife Tracie, children and grandchildren. ■

Upon arrival at the actual starting point of the expedition in Signalden, Norway, we were greeted by the sounds of dogs barking – the place was literally swarming with huskies! No training was given on how to handle the sled or the dogs – we had to learn it on our own whilst on the trip. This was a new experience for me as I had never handled dogs before. One needs to be a fast learner and be agile to enter such an expedition. The first day of sledding was tough because it was the first time for all participants to learn how to secure our dogs to the sled, and to experience riding the sled. The route was also challenging. We had to help the dogs by pushing the sled up the mountain and it was energy sapping! We rode for eight hours, or roughly 80 kilometres on that day, through the worst weather of the journey.
n What was the toughest part about the challenge?
n What made you join the Fjällräven Polar challenge? Last September, I was planning my next backpacking destination and wanted to experience either the Arctic or Antarctica. Unfortunately, the cost was too high. After returning from a backpacking trip to East Indonesia, I saw a call for entries for the Fjällräven Polar challenge, which would be held in the Arctic. I didn’t hesitate to apply! n How did you prepare for it? It was difficult as there was nobody here to approach for advice. Physically, I had to be fit, but I also had to be prepared to lose up to 15 kilogrammes during the expedition. I do white water rafting as a guide on the weekends, which helped me maintain a certain level of fitness.
The second part was preparing myself mentally for the cold weather and the prospect of handling the sled dogs. Then, there were the special preparations as a Muslim. There were many questions that needed to be answered such as how to perform ablution and where to pray or how to determine prayer times. I contacted the office of the Federal Territories Mufti, who developed guidelines for me to refer to. Last but not least was preparing my equipment. Although the organisers provided us with the necessary clothing, I still had to have my cameras ready for this journey of a lifetime! Before the expedition, we learnt basic winter survival skills such as how to layer our clothing, how to set up a tent, as well as starting a fire without matches in snowy, blistering cold weather. n Was the entire event what you expected?
June 2018_MAB News05.indd 76
To top it off, we also had to care for the huskies. Whenever we reached camp, we had to set up a line in the ice to secure the huskies, cook for them and dig holes in the snow so they can hide from the wind at night. After all that is done, we could finally set up our own tents, make our meals, and rest. n What did you discover about yourself from this? I always knew that I am mentally strong, and an incident the night before the dogsledding day reinforced my beliefs. Everyone was asleep when I went out of the tent to answer the call of nature, wearing only base-layer clothing with no proper gloves or shoes on. Unfortunately in the dark and windy night, I fell waist-deep into the snow. I struggled but finally managed to free myself – all wet in negative temperature conditions! I rushed to the tent to change, but my hands and feet were still numb. I became worried about hypothermia. The thought of not being able to do the expedition even before it started and the burden I carried as the first Malaysian on such an expedition all played in my mind, and I had a panic attack. Eventually, I calmed down, used a balm on my hands and feet, and convinced myself that I’d be okay. The rest is history.
The second thing I learnt is how proud I am of my country. When we neared the finishing line, I was holding the Malaysian flag and heard from afar amongst the waiting media someone yelling “Malaysia!” I was so proud to hear this that when a cameraman came to ask me how I felt, I choked back on tears and couldn't speak.

Duty Calls
for a feast and fireworks light up the sky. On the first day of Syawal, we dress in our best new clothes, or baju raya, and the children will queue up for duit raya (cash gifts). As a child, the happiest moment for me was collecting as much money as I could from the adults. I also miss gathering with family members and eating delicious traditional dishes, especially ketupat (rice wrapped in palm leaves) and rendang (a spicy meat dish). n How do you celebrate when you are on duty? During my first year working with the airline, I was rostered for a three-day trip, which also coincided with the first day of Raya. Some of the other crew members brought kuih raya (cookies, biscuits and sweets) for us to celebrate onboard. Even though there was no ketupat or rendang, we prepared meals provided by the caterer and shared it amongst the crew. Our baju raya, of course, was the Malaysia Airlines green Kebaya (uniform)! n How do you feel being away from your loved ones during Eid (or
Hari Raya as it is known in Malaysia)? Sad, obviously! I stay with my
family, and even though I get to see them almost every day, Hari Raya is an important occasion as it only happens once a year. It’s also the time when we gather with relatives and seek forgiveness from each other. In the past few years that I’ve been on duty during Hari Raya, I still managed to see my parents and siblings before I go off to work. I feel blessed that we have technology these days to connect to each other from any part of the world, through video calls and text messages. n What do you miss most when you have to be on duty during Eid
celebrations? I have fond memories of Hari Raya at my parents’
hometown in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Still fresh in my mind are celebrations on the eve of Ramadan, where everyone congregates
goingplacesmagazine.com | 77 | June 2018
Having to work during the festive season can be a difficult ordeal. Malaysia Airlines cabin crew Shazni Shazwani shares how she celebrates Eid away from home.
The best part about working at MAS is that everyone is like family. I have many Muslim passengers who never fail to wish us Selamat Hari Raya. Last year, I celebrated the eve of Hari Raya with my passengers from Hyderabad, most of whom are Muslim. They understood how I felt as they too had to work during the holidays. n How does fasting during Ramadan affect your performance and
how do you cope with the time difference? It is not easy to go
about the day without food, so I have to be strong both physically and mentally. I usually have a proper meal for my breakfast so as to not tire out easily. The biggest challenge for me during Ramadan is when I have to fly to countries with a huge time difference. Instead of staying in the hotel room, I grab the chance to explore places, meet the locals and do some food hunting while waiting for sunset to break fast.
Passage For Pilgrims Malaysia Airlines recently signed a three-year agreement with Andalusia Travel and Tours Sdn Bhd, which will see the airline providing up to 200 charter flights to cater to Malaysian Muslim pilgrims flying to Madinah and Jeddah during the Umrah season, beginning August. This year, the airline has committed to providing 65 flights amounting to over 42,000 seats. “This is in line with our commitment to ensure the comfort, convenience and safety of the pilgrims in their journey to perform their religious obligations in the Holy Land,” said Malaysia Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Izham Ismail.

Devices transmitting strong signals must remain switched off throughout the flight, until disembarkation. The Captain may prohibit the use of devices that can interfere with the aircraft’s system.
Lithium batteries Lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries for portable electronic devices (PEDs), including medical devices must not exceed 2g for lithium metal batteries and 100Wh for lithium ion batteries. All spare batteries, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for PEDs must be carried in passengers’ carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. For PEDs containing non-spillable batteries, they must be 12V or less or 100Wh or less. A maximum of two spare batteries may be carried. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.

Award-winning Malaysian singer NJWA’s self-titled third EP is playing onboard this month. We caught up with the singer for a quick chat. How old were you when you first got into music?
I took my first piano lesson at the age of three, and vocal lessons at the age of nine, so music has been a part of me since I was very young. I did my first show as a singer-songwriter at the age of 19 and I haven’t looked back since.

Being a student at Berklee really opened my ears to different styles of music. Although my initial love was for R&B and Jazz, I also realised that all the
