Traditional home-cooked meals such as ketupat (rice cakes) and lemang (glutinous rice cooked in bamboo) served with a side of rendang (spicy meat dish) and peanut sauce are a common sight during Hari Raya. Kuih raya or cookies will also be served to guests, with 20 or more popular kuih raya to try. My personal favourite is the pineapple tart, as this reminds me of my days baking with my late mother and selling them for Raya.

I love watching horror movies, but I have my fingers plugged into my ears half of the time or when I anticipate a terrifying moment. What’s the point of watching then, you ask? Well, I like the sense of terror, but I hate the scare. Have you ever thought about the ambient sound of a movie? How it is made, who makes them and what these people are called? They are called sound designers, and up until a couple of months ago, I had no idea of their existence. As Tan Lee Kuen writes, “sound may not be the obvious superstars of filmmaking, but it is one of its most important elements. If you’ve ever had to watch a clip of a movie without the sound effects or background music, you will immediately sense its absence. It’s a disembodying experience.” Read about these unsung heroes – they are Malaysians, have worked on films for the global stage, and won awards – on pages 44-47.

May was an interesting month. Malaysians looked back on a year of being governed by a new administration after the previous coalition, which ruled for more than six decades post-independence, was defeated in the country’s 14th General Elections on 9 May 2018. It appeared there were more critics than advocates of the government’s performance to date. No doubt this is fuelled by our need for instant gratification in this gladiatorial digital age we live in, or it may well be that as Malaysians, we love to bemoan things. We seem to forget that in governing a nation, the impact of government policies and actions requires time to take shape. One year is certainly too short a time. Also in May, Muslims around the world marked the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan on 6 May, where they abstained from food, drink and negative thoughts from dawn until sunset. This is expected to end on 5 June, when the festival of Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated. Tharik Hussain writes in this month’s issue that celebrations differ from country to country, but most focus their celebrations on the first day after Ramadan. It is a good time to be in Malaysia

Letter of the Month Going Places was never at the forefront until a story alleged that a picture of a piece of non-halal meat (which was actually beef) was published. The public relations was done right, restoring the airline’s dignity and attracting me to read it. The February issue was so apt with a descriptive article on the Spring Festival, festive food and a simple recipe, some zodiac predictions to begin the Year of Boar as well as stories of the lion dance and bian lian art. What’s more, the articles feature our very own homegrown expertise in Feng Shui and the preservation of a dying art. I'd love to see, additionally, costumes of people around the world celebrating Chinese New Year. As Editor Julie Goh said, her mom would sew 15 dresses for her. Also, perhaps feature the uniqueness of mixed marriages in Malaysia and how they celebrate the festive season, just like how Captain Izham Ismail would have celebrated with his late mother, who was from Guangzhou. Am looking forward to reading future issues. This is much better in terms of content and the effort put into publishing it, compared to magazines we may have to buy to read. I have been flying back and forth from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu with Malaysia Airlines for work for the past few years. Unfortunately, most of my experiences have been forgettable. However, on 2 March, my flight from KUL to BKI was made memorable by Ms. Olivia Loo and Ms. Sharmalaa. Both gave me a very vibrant greeting with a smile as I walked into the cabin. These extraordinary crew members are hard to find. For a moment, their energetic vibes made me forget that the flight was retimed and further delayed due to operational reasons. As lunch was being served, I observed them from afar. I realised the two ladies attended to every request from demanding and angry passengers cheerfully. Additionally, they served all passengers with a genuine smile. As I write this, images of them working hard and smiling keep playing in my mind, warming my heart. I am glad I was on their flight. Both of them have proven that the crew of Malaysia Airlines are not all robotic and grumpy. I hope they will continue to give off positive vibes in their work and perhaps, pass them on to their colleagues and passengers along the way. LIN WOEI FOO, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The flight from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur was particularly quick this time as I was immersed in reading the articles in Going Places, on eating food for good luck, the Spring Festival and the acrobatic grace of the lion dance. Love And Heartbreak On The Silver Screen Catch 12 days and nights of outstanding international films as the 66th Sydney Film Festival takes place this month. Visitors can look forward to film premieres with red carpet openings, in-depth discussions, parties and more than 250 films from across the globe. Films include documentaries such as The Final Quarter, which documents the career of indigenous Australian rules footballer Adam Goodes, and Amazing Grace, which celebrates the life of iconic singer Aretha Franklin. This month, the Kuala Lumpur City Opera will present Giuseppe Verdi’s much-loved La Traviata at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre. The three-act opera, which premiered in Venice in 1853, tells the story of Violetta Valéry, a Parisian courtesan with a lifethreatening illness who falls in love with the young bourgeois Alfredo Germont but is forced to break their relationship by his father, Giorgio Germont. This production will feature a double cast for the leading roles of Violetta, Alfredo and Giorgio, played by sopranos Ang Mei Foong and Joyce Khoo, tenors Tan Chee Shen and Yap Jin Hin, and bass-baritone Aw Yeow Hoay and baritone Martin Ng, respectively.

Food Fair The U.K.’s capital is turning up the summer fun with a Taste Of London, a five-day food festival on 19-23 June at Regent’s Park. Malaysia’s Triumph Four Malaysian artists are making history in Italy at the 58th International Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, otherwise known as the Venice Biennale. Anurendra Jegadeva, Zulkifli Yusoff, Ivan Lam and H.H. Lim have been selected to represent their country at the international art show’s first Malaysian Pavilion, which has been curated by Lim Wei-Ling, the owner of private gallery Wei-Ling Contemporary in Kuala Lumpur. “These artists have established a name for themselves, both within Malaysia and on the international front,” says Lim. “I have seen how they have evolved and grown as contemporary artists, who are making statements about the world in which they live,” This year’s overarching theme for the Venice Biennale is ‘May You Live in Interesting Times’. Dress To Impress The Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore launches its Season of Chinese Art with a sensational exhibition entitled Guo Pei: Chinese Art and Couture. Guo Pei is one of China’s premier haute couture designers and her name hit the headlines when Rihanna famously wore one of her pieces, an incredible trailing yellow gown, to the 2015 Met Gala. The exhibition compares and contrasts 29 of Guo’s embroidered designs with 20 masterpieces of Chinese art. The designer grew up in Beijing and was surrounded with a wealth of Chinese imperial art, which now serves as a constant inspiration for her dramatic, sculptural and ornate gowns. Made To Last Life Behind The Lens For fans of classic cinema, Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition at the Design Museum in London is an absolute must. The American director, screenwriter and producer, who passed away in 1999, was one of the greatest and most original filmmakers of the 20th century. His repertoire includes The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket and 2001: A Space Odyssey, among many others. The exhibition gathers 700 objects, a rich array of archive footage and a detailed model of the centrifuge set that Kubrick developed for 2001: A Space Odyssey, all of which help visitors delve into the genius of Kubrick and discover the inspiration behind his iconic works.

The Museo Salvatore Ferragamo in Florence, Italy presents a show devoted to sustainability, green design and the future of fashion. Sustainable Thinking is inspired by the brand’s founder, who was an early innovator in recycled materials, often using them for his couture pieces. Examples of sustainable designs made by the man himself from the 1920s onwards are on display alongside contemporary works created by the brand in the present day using new, environment-friendly materials and techniques. The exhibition offers inspiration to the next generation of fashion designers, artists and material producers, showing that protecting the ecosystem should be an imperative part of the design process.

Relics Of The Rulers Nanjing has seen many rulers who led from the Presidential Palace, named after China’s first modern ruler, President Sun Yat-sen. This sprawling complex of grand buildings dates back to the Ming Dynasty and features a mishmash of various dynastic and European styles interspersed with classical gardens and a vast museum of 20th-century China’s history. Nearby, you can find the Ruins of the Ming Imperial Palace, located in a peaceful park. Although little remains of the palace apart from a single large gate, a few stumps

of pillars or walls and a multitude of worn stone statues, you can imagine the former grandeur of the inspiration for Beijing’s Forbidden City.

Historical Crossroads Nanjing today is a sprawling highrise city, as modern and hectic as any in China. But it’s been around for a long time, recognised as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China and the centre of numerous dynasties and key moments in the nation’s history. The best place to get a grip on the sheer bulk of its history is Nanjing

Museum, one of the oldest, largest and best museums in China. Well-organised with English captions and multilingual guides, it contains vast historic artefacts and probably needs a day to do it justice. It also houses one of the best collections of Ming and Qing porcelain in the world, as well as a stunning jade burial suit. Many other museums mark specific historic landmarks that took place in the city. The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Museum, which charts the 19th-century Taiping Rebellion, the war little-known outside of China

that killed more people than World War One, is housed in the tranquil riverside Ming Dynasty Zhanyuan Gardens where rebels had their headquarters. Meanwhile, the city’s most infamous and tragic event is remembered at The Memorial of the Nanjing Massacre that occurred during the Japanese occupation in World War Two.

malls such as Deji Plaza that line the streets of the downtown district around Xinjiekou. This is sometimes called Nanjing’s Times Square, and the neon-lit area is an excellent place for a stroll after dark even if you don’t want to shop.

Nightlife is another thing the city doesn’t skimp on, with several areas of bars and clubs. The most famous is the 1912 District area, west of the Presidential Palace, where international-style bars and restaurants occupy an entire block and have something for everyone. Other nightspots include the Gulou and University Districts. ■

Down By The Riverside Nanjing is located on the banks of the Qinhuai River, the lifeblood of the city. Along its banks, you can find some of the most interesting attractions. Right at the heart of the city is the Confucian Temple; the area surrounding it is one of the most vibrant and popular with tourists. At night, it’s thronged by people, and the colourful ancient buildings are lit up with traditional lanterns and less-traditional neon lights that reflect their light across the river.

Nearby, you can find the Zhanghua Gate, the southern gate of the walled city constructed in 1387 during the Ming Dynasty. The 14- to 21-metre-high walls stretch around the city, and this is their grandest gate, the biggest ever built in China and well worth climbing to the top to admire the view.

At the base of the southern slopes, you’ll find the Xiaoling Mausoleum of Ming Dynasty, one of the biggest imperial tombs in the country. A tree-shaded Sacred Way, flanked by massive stone statues of auspicious animals such as lions and elephants, leads to a small bridge that crosses into the impressive and highly decorated mausoleum itself.

Purple Mountain There are several markets here, including night markets, a decent place to pick up souvenirs if you’re prepared to haggle. Popular items include yuhuashi bracelets and necklaces made from the local kaleidoscope-coloured ‘rain flower stone’ and intricately carved wooden objects such as boxes and statues. It’s also a good place to try the local cuisine at the many street stalls and restaurants that exude delicious aromas, especially along Fuzimiao Street. Nanjing is famous for duck dishes such as duck blood and tofu noodle soup, salted duck soup and Jinling roast duck, the ancestor of Beijing’s most famous dish. The best Nanjing food, however, is served

Nanjing’s most popular outdoor destination can be found in its eastern suburbs at Purple Mountain, named after the purple-coloured clouds that often wreath it at sunrise and sunset. Besides naturally beautiful forests and lakes, it’s also home to over 200 scenic spots as well as historical sites from the Six Dynasties to the Republic of China eras. The oldest is Linggu temple, built in the 4th century, one of the most significant Buddhist sites in China. In immaculate gardens surrounded by ancient trees and populated by yellow-robed monks, you can wander from its brightly painted ‘beamless’ hall to the top of its 60-metre-high

Perhaps the most visited site on the mountain is the imposingly grand Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum, dedicated to the first president of the Republic of China, a pivotal figure in bringing down the Qing dynasty, and with it, over 2,000 years of imperial rule. To get a bird’s eye view of the city, ascend to the viewing platform of the 458-metre-high, futuristic-looking Zifeng Tower in Gulou District, Nanjing’s tallest building and the 14th-tallest in the world. The viewing platform is on the 72nd floor, with the Intercontinental Hotel located just below and high-end restaurants and a nightclub right at the top.

Our name, Sama-Sama, means togetherness, but it also means “you’re welcome”. The hotel’s logo is shaped as two hands coming together. It symbolises the way our nation’s various people and cultures come together.

What do you think are some of the current challenges faced by the hotel industry? Is there an imbalance in the supply and demand of rooms in Kuala Lumpur?

The hotel market is saturated, with more hotels opening this year. If things do not improve, this will eventually trigger a price war as hotels will start slashing prices, especially in densely populated city areas, to deal with stiff competition. Operating costs are increasing, and with factors such as the weakening currency, this is not healthy at all. There should be a tourism bureau to monitor these issues, to have a proper standing procedure on balancing prices and to keep the hotel industry thriving amid the current soft market. What about the employment situation? Is there a shortage of well-trained guest services staff in Malaysia? What is SamaSama doing about it?

We must face the reality that fewer people among the current generation want to work in the local industry. Graduates mostly look for overseas posting opportunities once they finish their studies with the allure of higherpaying jobs due to the currency exchange. Human resource literature suggests that hotels seeking to become known for their quality service should be selective in staffing, provide orientation and training, offer competitive and fair pay and benefits, and involve and empower employees. Sama-Sama makes internal training a crucial part of helping to grow employees’ skills and careers. As part of our mission to offer impeccable services, we have dedicated internal trainers from various departments. We also

collaborate with local colleges and universities to recruit potential trainees; for those with potential and high commitment, we will hire them full-time. We have also increased our salary alignment scale to be competitive with other brands.

The local hotel industry faces challenges in filling job vacancies and maintaining employees in their roles. It is important for the industry and academia to work collaboratively to educate the general public on the rewards and benefits of working in the local hotel industry. At Sama-Sama Hotels, concrete strategies are implemented to improve our human resource management and to entice potential employees, such as by offering competitive salaries. Besides presenting internal rewards and bonuses, we also practise showing our appreciation to employees by giving them room for growth and improvement. What can the local government do to attract more tourists or business travellers?

I see this as a cooperative effort with all parties involved to increase our tourist attractions. Having tourist sites that can showcase the roots of our melting pot of cultures is a very good effort. Malaysia is known for its heritage, culture, people, food, beaches and eco-tourism, but the aggressive promotion of our products to compete with our neighbouring countries is still lacking. Our tourism body also needs to emphasise and increase our standard of cleanliness and security as this gives a good impression, especially to business travellers.

Disruptive technology such as ride-sharing has changed the way many industries operate. Do you see this trend with hotels?

Hotel guests are more tech-savvy than ever. Dealing effectively and profitably with this savviness is one of the top management issues in the industry. Guests expect to find free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, USB ports and so on. Hotels and other businesses in the hospitality industry are relying heavily on technology to streamline their services. Keeping up with technology is one of the major issues faced by hotel managers, but when dealt with properly, it is worth it. What’s next for the hotel?

The next few years will be competitive. However, with future extension plans by airport operator, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, and the anticipation of passenger growth for KLIA, I would say our business will be in good shape. SamaSama Hotel will be undergoing a makeover to give this place a new vibe, from our lobby and food-and-beverage outlets to our ballroom. It will also inspire our associates to excel in their jobs and deliver the best guest experience. ■

One thousand years is a long time to be the capital of a country, and that millennium certainly left its mark on Kyoto. Everywhere you go, there are reminders of the Japanese city’s former glory: Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, Zen gardens, palaces, theatres, traditional craftsmen’s workshops and more. Down every street, it seems, there are wonderful discoveries waiting to be made; Kyoto rewards those who head out and start walking.

Temples, Shrines & Rock Gardens Of course, there are marquee attractions to have at the top of your list, such as Kinkakuji – the Golden Pavilion. Completely coated in gold leaf, this three-storey masterpiece was originally a villa built by the shogun, the country’s top

general, around 600 years ago; it was converted into a Zen temple only after he died. What you see today is a reconstruction, the original having burned to the ground in 1950, but it’s no less magnificent for being new. It’s even more impressive when it has a backdrop of fall foliage or a dusting of snow. After marvelling at the gleaming exterior of Kinkakuji, you’d expect Ginkakuji – the Silver Pavilion, located to the east – to be coated in silver. It’s not, but some people find it and the surrounding gardens to be more relaxing than Kinkakuji. The temple known as Kiyomizudera sits on a hillside on the eastern fringe of the city, giving a nice overview of Kyoto. Getting there is half the fun because you must climb the winding, character-rich lanes of the Higashiyama neighbourhood to reach it. With an overall history of some 1,200 years, Kiyomizudera in its present form dates back about 400 years, its wooden halls having been constructed using meticulous joinery techniques, without any nails. It’s surrounded by a wooden deck from which people used to jump; they believed that if they survived the 13-metre

fall, their wishes would be fulfilled. A less painful way of getting your wish to come true is to try to catch some of the water cascading from the nearby Otowa waterfall and then drink it. From Kiyomizudera, head south to Fushimi Inari Jinja, a Shinto shrine (Shinto is a religion that predates the arrival of Buddhism in Japan). There are Inari shrines across Japan, all featuring vivid orange gates called torii, but nowhere else will you see the hundreds of torii found here. There are so many of them, so tightly spaced, that visitors essentially walk through an orange

tunnel, each torii painted on the side with the name of the donor. This is one of the country’s most popular attractions; if you want a photo without the crowds, try first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon on a rainy day, but even then, you’ll probably have to be patient. Kyoto is justifiably famous for its serene rock gardens; the best-known is at Ryoanji, a walkable distance west of Kinkakuji. Some 250 square metres in size, it consists of raked gravel and 15 larger rocks, arranged in a way that no more than 14 can be seen from any position around the garden’s perimeter (‘garden’ is a bit of a misnomer, for the only vegetation is the moss surrounding the clusters of rocks). It was intended to help the temple’s monks as they meditated on the wooden deck of the abbot’s residence; if they attained enlightenment, it was believed only then would they be able to see all 15 rocks at once. Ryoanji is by no means the only place in Kyoto to seek enlightenment. Kenninji, a temple in the Gion district, also has a nice rock garden, offering

something that Ryoanji doesn’t: a spectacular ceiling painting of two dragons in one of the halls. Another option is to walk north from Fushimi Inari Jinja to a temple called Tofukuji, which has four distinctly different gardens, one on each side of the abbot’s residence. There’s a single dragon painted on the ceiling of a hall here too, but it’s more difficult to see than the double dragons of Kenninji.

Farther afield lies the district of Arashiyama. Here too you’ll find plenty of temples and shrines, but the most famous attraction is the Sagano bamboo groves, through which run picturesque lanes lined with fences. The whole area is ideal for strolling, but if you run out of energy, you can hire a rickshaw to pull you around. Rickshaws were invented in Japan – the English word is a corruption of jinrikisha, or ‘people-powered vehicle’ – and though they fell out of favour with the advent of automobiles, some young men today (and a few women) see them as a chance to get vigorous exercise and be paid for it!

Kimonos, Japanese-style Hijabs & Halal Food Once you’ve ticked all the famous attractions off your list, it’s time to find your own personal attractions, ones that don’t appear in any sightseeing guidebook. What better way to do that than in a kimono? Dressing up in a kimono is an extremely popular activity in Kyoto, for Japanese and foreign visitors alike, for women in particular but also men. There’s no shortage of kimono rental agencies, but Yumeyakata offers a little extra: it has Japanese-style hijab. At its main store in Gojo or its Oike Bettei branch, the latter located inside a traditional machiya

(wooden) house, you can take all the photos you want before changing back into your regular clothes, or you can venture out into the streets of Kyoto and return your kimono later in the day. Interested in taking a Japanese hijab home with you? Try Kyoto Handicraft Centre, just northwest of Heian Shrine. It offers square and rectangular hijab in a variety of colours and styles, but that’s just the beginning: you can also buy a wide range of souvenirs and artwork from all corners of Japan – lacquerware, fans, wall hangings, tea ceremony tools and much more. Recent years have seen a jump in the number of options available for halal food. In the Gion district, Naritaya serves 100 percent halal gyudon (sliced beef and onions on top of a bowl of rice) and ramen. In the northwest of the city in the Arashiyama neighbourhood, Yoshiya Okunoniwa serves excellent Japanese-style meals in a lovely setting – and it’s all halal. There’s also a tatamifloored prayer room with washing facilities. If you want to learn how to make your own ramen, the Ramen Factory, about one kilometre east of Kyoto Station, provides lessons in English. Everything

here is halal and a prayer room is also available. Kyoto has a huge variety of accommodation, including Hotel Granvia, conveniently located in the Kyoto Station complex. Halal food is served in both its elegant Japanese restaurant, Ukihashi, and the more casual restaurant, Le Temps; on request, the hotel will provide prayer mats. There is a Qibla in all guest rooms. For an entirely different experience, try one of the city’s capsule hotels, such as the sleek, futuristic Nine Hours, near the popular Gion area. Men and women sleep on different floors (served by different elevators) in individual pods with shared washroom facilities. It’s the closest most of us will ever come to sleeping in a spaceship – but it’s a lot more affordable than space travel. ■

The Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the month of Ramadan, when Muslims fast every day from sunrise until sunset. There are two Eids in the Islamic calendar and each one marks a significant moment for almost two billion Muslims around the world. Eid al-Fitr comes first in the Muslim calendar and is celebrated on the first day of the month of Shawwal. This is followed, a little over two months later, by Eid al-Adha, often referred to as the ‘feast of sacrifice’ on the 11th day of the month of Dhul Hijjah, to mark the end of the days set aside for performing the Hajj pilgrimage in Makkah. In 2019, Eid al-Fitr is expected to be celebrated on 5 June and Eid al-Adha will fall around 10 August. The dates for each Eid remain uncertain because the Islamic calendar is an actual lunar calendar that relies on the real cycles of the moon and therefore, a sighting of the new moon must be confirmed to determine the start of each month.

Eid al-Fitr can last up to three days for many Muslims, but most people focus their celebrations on the first day after Ramadan. Muslims normally begin this day by ensuring they are clean and in a state of purity. They do this by bathing and wearing either new or clean clothes.

the weekly Friday Jummah prayer, the Eid prayer has two rakahs (units), can only be performed in congregation, and involves the Imam giving a khutbah (sermon). However, unlike the Friday prayer, the khutbah is delivered after the Eid prayer as opposed to before it, and the Eid prayer has several takbeers (a proclamation of the greatness of God or Allahu akbar), whereas there is only one takbeer at the start of the Friday prayer.

These food can differ around the world depending on regional tastes. For example, Muslims in China like to make savoury kewaps (long, thin mincemeat patties grilled on skewers) and sweet sangze noodles, while Muslims in the Indian subcontinent might make savoury snacks like samosas (triangular pastries stuffed with lightly spiced vegetables or meat) or sweets like gelebia (deep-fried syrup swirls) and for the main meal, a large biryani of slowcooked meat in flavoured rice is very popular.

As Eid prayers are often done in the biggest mosques, the period after the prayer is always a good opportunity to meet friends and neighbours with customary Eid greetings. In many parts of the world, this is done with “Eid Mubarak” (blessed celebration) and for many men by the shaking of hands and hugging.

Dishes like the biryani are often central to the family meal most Muslims will have at some point on Eid. In some cultures, this is the main ritual of the day, with everyone arriving at the home of the main family matriarch or patriarch to sit down collectively to eat.

This is particularly important in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the second day is set aside to pay respect to the country’s martyrs from the war in the 1990s.

Eid is explicitly seen as a time for forgiveness as well. In Malaysia, forgiveness is key to one of the main rituals of Eid, which sees individuals asking their parents and family members to forgive them of any wrongdoing from the past year. Eid is also a time when Muslims are explicitly generous. As a result, Muslims around the world are increasingly buying each other gifts for the festival. In some cultures, this might be actual presents purchased in advance and presented on the day. In many, this takes the form of giving money to children, who call these monetary Eid gifts “Eiddy”. Increasingly, authorities around the world arrange large-scale events to complement the day and encourage Muslims to celebrate together as a community. In many countries, various forms of entertainment are held for Eid festivals. Often, these include musicians on stage at events such as special food markets; in countries like Malaysia, firework displays might cap off the festivities. ■

Three men are waiting at a train station in the middle of nowhere. There’s scant dialogue, the scene driven by the sounds of a somnolent afternoon of a hot day: the chirping of birds, boots scraping against dusty floorboards, cracking knuckles and a buzzing fly. This is Sergio Leone’s classic Once Upon A Time In The West, its magnificent 10-minute opening scene shaped by immaculate sound design. The scene ends with the roar of an approaching train, and the strains of a harmonica introduces the man they are waiting for. ‘‘It is one of my favourite scenes with almost no

dialogue but very good sound design,’’ enthuses Zahir Omar, a Malaysian filmmaker. ‘‘Sound can really shape a film and give it an added dimension. I think not enough attention is given to sound design.’’ Compared to directors, actors and the visual components of a film, sound may not be the obvious superstars of filmmaking, but it is one of its most important elements. Good sound design in films is such an essential part of the experience that we take it for granted. If you’ve ever had to watch a clip of a movie without the sound effects or background music,

you’d immediately sense its absence. It’s a disembodying experience. When it came to his debut film, Fly By Night, a crime thriller set in Kuala Lumpur, Zahir paid attention to the sound production. Together with his sound designer and music director, they spent four months on sound design, a luxury for an indie film, but Zahir was determined to get it right. One of his favourite scenes in the film is set in the interrogation room. The ventilator fan gives off a low hum and a clock ticks in the background. The sense of humidity amplifies the emotions of the character in custody – the anxiety, fear and helplessness. Used effectively, sound is a powerful emotional tool. It can change the mood of a scene and set

the pace of the plot. It can make us laugh or make us scared. A horror film would not be as impactful without the accompanying creepy sounds. ‘‘Sound is a great story-telling tool. It can create a great emotional experience for the audience. Without it, the audience will lose a big portion of the film’s experience,’’ says Axle Kith Cheeng, a freelance sound designer. In 2012, she won a prestigious industry Golden Reel award for sound editing by a student filmmaker for the stop-motion short film Head Over Heels. The Oscar-nominated film, directed by fellow National Film and Television School student Timothy Reckart, is about a married couple that has grown apart and is depicted as living in opposite sides of a floating house – one is grounded while the other’s world is upside down. ‘‘When both characters are in the house, we can feel their mutual hostility with the chaotic noises happening inside the house. The noise from Madge’s vacuum and Walter’s TV static suggest a very uncomfortable house,’’ Cheeng explained.

animation series called Insectibles. ‘‘I had to design the movement sounds for a snail, a wasp and a caterpillar,’’ she said. For the snail, she crushed oranges to get the squishy and slimy sounds of a snail on the move. The caterpillar’s movement was reproduced with a rubber swim cap and the wasp was two pieces of raffia string tied to foil and flapped in time with the insect’s wing movements. Creating the right sounds is not a simple or trivial task, but sound designers often get the short shrift when it comes to time and budget, especially in low-budget productions. ‘‘Sound is still not a priority in film production; hence it is left to the very last stage of filmmaking where everything needs to be fixed in a short period of time,’’ said Cheeng.

‘‘Sadly, when we receive a film, it is always when the budget is almost finished, and they are left with so little to cope with costs,’’ said

Georgina Tan, the managing director of film and media group Supernova Media agreed that budget is a contributing factor in the quality of sound in films. ‘‘I would say it is the biggest challenge,’’ she said.

7 When the house is grounded and Madge ventures out of it to explore the world by herself, she looks back at the house and realises that she misses Walter. ‘‘In this scene, the ambience is very quiet with some cold wind to suggest her loneliness, and her footsteps sound mushy to suggest her heartache. The foley work here is very detailed and exaggerated, so we can feel her emotions,’’ said Cheeng. Foley is the reproduction of everyday sounds added to a film in post-production and can be anything from footsteps on creaky boards to the sound of laundry flapping in the wind. ‘‘I love doing foley and there is a lot of foley work put into Head Over Heels. The film has no dialogue. That’s my forte, making a world just with sound.’’ When it came to designing worlds, Cheeng had her work cut out for her on an award-winning

‘‘The correct treatment and layers can transform a seemingly bland offering into a visually stunning piece. The right sound can create an impactful sense of whatever the director or film creator had envisioned.’’ The sound design team at Supernova just wrapped up work on Astro Shaw and HBO Asia’s adaptation of Tan Twan Eng’s The Garden Of Evening Mists, a film set in post-World War II British Malaya. With this film, they had a proper budget and time to recreate the sounds of that era, including of Japanese fighter planes and weapons. ‘‘Anything that is not current can be challenging. Not only do you have to simulate sounds that are relevant to that time period, but as with every film that we do, there are special tricks,’’ said Tan. The trick of good sound design is to make it seamless and smooth, said Cheeng. ‘‘Because it is so subtle, you won’t notice it. But if it is missing, you will feel a kind of emptiness. As a good sound designer, we know when we have done a good job when the audience is not jolted out of their film experience because of the sound.’’ ■

was a working mother who would cook when she came home. We would make such a mess, but she didn’t care as she got to spend time with us.” Though Anis may be the family’s resident TV chef, on special occasions like Eid, everyone chips in. "Up to 200 people come over, so we're divided into two teams.” Anis tackles nasi jagung (sweetcorn rice) and ayam ros (a spicysweet chicken dish popularised by Penang restaurant Hameediyah).

When Anis Nabilah made her debut on the TV cooking show Icip Icip 2007, she took the industry by surprise. Petite, female and only 21 years old, she did not fit the celebrity chef mould during the pre-YouTube era, when maturity was an advantage. The fast-cut show format was often wildly improvisional. Audiences would see Anis scrambling to look for her ingredients, just like a harried housewife in a working kitchen. "Sometimes we planned the menu in advance, but there were days the producer would tell me in the morning we're going on a boat along the Sarawak river and you’ve gotta whip up something on the fly. Err… what to cook? Fish, of course!”

Keeping it real, coupled with her bubbly personality, endeared Anis to viewers. Icip Icip became the first Malaysian show to be picked up by the Asian Food Channel, establishing Anis as one of the region’s most highly-sought television chefs and an unlikely champion for Malaysian cuisine. Anis’ love affair with cooking began at home; living under one roof with seven siblings, grandparents and parents. “Every day was the kind of feast you see during Raya (the Eid festival),” she says. Raising a large family made Anis’ mother more creative in the delegation of kitchen tasks, such as giving each child different-coloured bowls with different ingredients that make up a marble cake. “Mum

How Anis arrived at the ayam ros recipe is a story for the family annals. Hameediyah was the caterer for her grandparents' wedding, where one of the dishes was its signature ayam ros. Hameediyah wouldn't reveal the recipe to Anis, so the determined young woman ate at the shop eight times and jotted her observations in a curry-stained notebook. Once she was confident that she’d nailed it, she cooked the dish and invited her aunts over to judge. "They said it tasted exactly like the original! Of course, being my aunts, they might be a bit biased.” Anis’ formidable palate – more precisely, her ability to crack the recipe of a dish by tasting it – is something she has demonstrated from a young age. As a teenager, she would cook her way out of trouble. Whenever she was grounded, she would concoct her parents' favourite comfort food; coming home unsuspectingly to the spread, their resolve understandably softened by the time Anis got around to asking, "Mak (Mother), can I go out this weekend?” "I was a rebel without a cause," she says. "Nothing bad, just normal teenage stuff like dyeing my hair pink and missing tuition.”

Malaysian cuisine takes hours and scores of ingredients to prepare but is underappreciated

Growing up changed that. She insisted on paying for her studies in culinary school because her parents still had to fund three younger siblings. "I figured I'd given them enough trouble as a kid!” Enrolled at the Food Institute of Malaysia, Anis found her calling. "The rebel without a cause became a bookworm, nerd and teacher’s pet. For the first time in my life, I knew everything that was happening in a classroom. I picked up everything very quickly because I had a huge interest, (even though) I have an extra bone in my feet which makes standing in hard steel-toed chef boots for 10 hours a day very painful. Every night, I’d put my feet in hot water with salt, but the next day I'd be back at it.” Her peers commented that with her good looks, she belonged on TV instead of in an industrial kitchen. Their words proved prophetic. Six months after graduation, she was handpicked from 60 hopefuls to host Icip Icip, a MalaysianIndonesian collaboration. With 50 shows and counting on her resume, Anis is happy to continue taking on work that excites her on a project-to-project basis. She has a show coming out during Eid called 1, 2 Bakar to demonstrate ways of cooking with an oven. The idea is to gently encourage cooks to go out of their comfort zone and experiment, something that Anis is passionate about. Her goal is to see Malaysian food make it in a big

Malaysians’ lack of appreciation for their own cuisine – and enchantment with the West – frustrates her, something she confesses to being guilty of at one point. “When I graduated, I wanted to cook French and Italian. They come up with all these fancy terms like mirepoix, which sound so glamorous when it’s just chopped vegetables.” That perspective changed when she did a show with local TV station RTM that required her to travel the breadth and length of Malaysia and learn every state’s culinary specialities. One memorable episode involved chopping a coconut tree to extract its umbut (hearts of palm), an ingredient that shot to fame when Brazil’s Alex Atala used it to make pasta. “Our ancestors have been using pandan (screwpine) for centuries, and all of a sudden, Nigella Lawson says pandan is the next ‘it’

ingredient; only then we are raving about it! Why are we waiting for other people to popularise our food?” she points out. “Malaysians like to say our food is the greatest, but we don’t support our industry with action. We are willing to pay through our noses for Western food, yet we don’t want to spend more for a local dish that has undergone hours of labour and utilises scores of ingredients to prepare.” Happily, she believes that attitude is shifting. “Rendang was named the world’s best food by CNN in 2017. For the first time, we gained a spot in Asia’s 50 best restaurants and it’s a Malay concept restaurant. I was like, finally! Looking at the culinary scene, I can see that the new generation of Malaysians are more appreciative of traditional food. They are working hard to push our culinary legacy forward and I want to be among them who are doing that.” ■

NASI JAGUNG (SWEETCORN RICE) Ingredients: n 2 cinnamon sticks n 5 cloves n 5 cardamoms n 4 star anise n 1 white onion, blended n 1 green chilli, blended n 4 candlenuts, blended n 2 tablespoons of kas-kas, blended n 5 garlic cloves, blended n 5 shallots, sliced n 2cm ginger, sliced n 4 lemongrass, bruised n 3 tablespoons of ghee n 2 cans of evaporated milk n 1 cup water n 1 cup warm water n 4 cups Basmathi rice, soaked for 15

minutes, toss and drain for 15 minutes n 1 can of corn in water n A big pinch of saffron n 1 tablespoon of chilli powder n 2 tablespoons raw honey n Scallions n Fried shallots n Salt

Method: 1. Heat vegetable oil in pot and deep-fry chicken pieces that have been seasoned with salt. Fry till golden brown and set aside. 2. Heat a non-stick pan over medium fire; add

kas-kas, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, black peppercorns. Toast spices for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently. Set aside to cool. Place spices in a spice blender and blend until texture becomes fine powder. 3. Melt ghee in a big wok over medium heat. Sauté star anise, cloves, cardamoms and cinnamon till fragrant. Add dried chillies and sauté until the oil splits from the paste. Add the ground spices and the blended spices. Add a bit of water to slow the cooking. Add tomatoes and fried chicken and leave to boil for 15-20 minutes. Add coconut milk and boil for another 5 minutes. Season with salt, add honey and sprinkle coriander before serving.

Setiap kali jarum halus itu menembusi permukaan lembut kain baldu, tangannya pantas meratakan benang emas tadi tepat pada coraknya. Dengan gelendong tangan dalam genggamannya, corak-corak flora yang rumit terus dilakarkan pada pencontoh kadbod. Lembut dan berkilat! Begitulah kehalusan sulaman yang dihasilkan dengan penuh teliti. Sulaman tekat emas perlu sempurna tanpa cacat cela ketika diserahkan kepada pihak istana. Sukar dikuasai oleh sesiapa termasuk golongan tukang tekat profesional, kemahiran seni tekat emas kini merupakan satu khazanah yang tidak ternilai khususnya di Kuala Kangsar, Perak. Seni kraftangan ini juga menjadi lambang keindahan identiti masyarakat Melayu.

Keluarga Pencinta Seni Tekat “Saya mewarisi kemahiran ini daripada ibu. Hanya dengan memerhati, lama-kelamaan saya pun pandai melakukannya. Masa itu, saya baru berusia 18 tahun,” kongsi Mardziah Abu Kassin, 50, yang berasal daripada generasi penggiat seni tekat di Perak. Demi menyara hidup, pelbagai produk kraftangan Perak seperti labu sayong, kusyen dan bekas daun pisang pernah menjadi produk niaganya. Namun, tidak seperti ahli keluarganya yang lain, minatnya terhadap seni tekat belum lagi berputik sewaktu kecil.

She traces the intricate floral patterns using a cardboard template and hand-held spool. Silky and shiny, every strand must be carefully woven; even the slightest slip can be noticeable. The gold embroidery, or tekat emas, must be perfect to be presented to royalty.

Golden Heritage. Unravel the tradition of gold embroidery at Kuala Kangsar.

Tekat emas is an unusual skill to master, even among embroiderers. In Malaysia, this craft is a cultural heritage unique to Kuala Kangsar, the royal town of Perak state. It is a glistening artistic representation of the Malay identity.

A Family Of Embroiderers Mardziah binti Abu Kassin, 50, comes from a long line of embroiderers. “The skill was passed down to me by my mother. I didn’t learn formally, but after a long time of observing her, I was able to do it too,” she says.

She admits that previously, she did not share her family’s enthusiasm. Mardziah used to sell handicrafts such as cushions and betel leaf holders. Noticing that many customers asked about gold-thread embroidery, she decided to give it a try. The first item she made on her own was decorative tekat art that can be framed on the wall. From there, her passion grew. Mardziah is the eighth child in a family of nine children. Two of her older sisters are also skilled in tekat emas, but she is the only one who chose to do it full time.

Selain Mardziah, dua orang kakaknya turut arif dalam seni ini walaupun hanya beliau seorang yang menceburinya sepenuh masa. Kemahiran ini diwarisi daripada ibu mereka, Azizah Mohamad Yusof yang juga seorang guru tekat di Kuala Kangsar. “Saya juga sempat bergurukan arwah nenek sebelum pemergiannya pada usia 100 tahun. Banyak teknik yang saya pelajari,” tambah anak kelapan daripada sembilan adik-beradik itu. Kemahiran seni kraftangan yang diwarisi daripada beberapa generasi sebelum ini biasanya dikuasai oleh golongan wanita khususnya di Malaysia. Di negara Arab Saudi pula, seni tekat sulaman ini lebih kerap dipraktikkan oleh golongan Adam.

Rekaan estetik bagi setiap hasil tekat juga berbeza mengikut negara pengeluarnya. “Di Arab Saudi, sulaman biasanya berilhamkan surah-surah al-Quran bertulisan jawi. Di Aceh, Indonesia pula, sulaman sabit pula sering diserikan dengan corak-corak flora. Di Malaysia, motif-motif bunga, haiwan dan geometri seperti bunga kekwa, bunga kertas dan bunga kemboja lebih digemari pelanggan,” sambungnya lagi.

Menyulam Sebuah Warisan Sejarah seni tekat emas sudah lama menjadi sebahagian daripada lipatan sejarah perdagangan Malaysia. Sejak mula diperkenalkan kepada masyarakat tempatan sekitar abad ke-15 oleh saudagar-saudagar pedagang dari Timur Tengah, keindahan dan kehalusan kraftangan ini sentiasa menjadi buruan golongan bangsawan dan kerabat diraja. Selain menghiasi pelbagai barangan perkahwinan, pertunangan dan kelahiran, sulaman ini juga kerap menyerikan pakaian dan barangan rumah kerabat diraja seperti langsir, kusyen, alas meja dan cadar. Menariknya, keluarga Mardziah telah menghasilkan tekat emas untuk kerabat diraja Perak sejak tahun 1920-an. Malah, beliau dan 12 artis yang lain perlu menyiapkan semua tempahan tekat sulaman tangan dalam masa tiga bulan sebagai persiapan bagi hari pertabalan Yang Dipertuan Agong yang ke-13, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin pada tahun 2007. Seni warisan budaya ini juga mula menerima penghargaan di peringkat antarabangsa. Tahun lalu, beberapa produk tekat emas yang dikomisenkan juga dipamerkan di sebuah muzium di Busan, Korea. Untuk menambah kapasiti pengeluaran, kebanyakan pengusaha seni tekat kini bergantung kepada bantuan mesin jahit. Mardziah bagaimanapun masih setia dengan kaedah lama – kain diregangkan pada sebuah pemidang kayu sebelum corak kertas diletakkan di atasnya.

The craft is predominantly mastered by women, at least in Malaysia. In countries like Saudi Arabia, it is usually practised by male embroiderers.

births and other important events. Within the royal family, it can be used to decorate clothes and household items, such as curtains, cushions, table cloths and bedsheets.

There are significant differences in the aesthetic designs. “In Saudi Arabia, they often sew Arabic phrases from the Quran. In Aceh, Indonesia, they do crescent moon designs but embellish them with floral patterns. In Malaysia, we have floral motifs, fauna motifs and geometric motifs,” Mardziah explains.

Mardziah’s family has been sewing for the royal family of Perak since the 1920s. In 2007, she and 12 other artists had the opportunity to prepare the gold-thread embroidery for the coronation of the 13th King, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin. It took them three months to complete everything by hand.

Her own customers tend to request floral patterns such as the chrysanthemum, bougainvillea, frangipani and paddy.

Beyond Malaysian shores, this art has its share of cultural appreciation. Last year, Mardziah’s team was commissioned to make several traditional household items that are now exhibited at a museum in Busan, South Korea.

Threaded With Tradition The history of tekat emas is interwoven with the history of trade. During the 15th century, the embroidery was introduced to the local community by traders from the Middle East. The beauty and finesse of this craftwork naturally made it sought after by members of royalty and nobility. The embroidery would usually be used on ceremonial items for weddings, engagements,

Tetap dengan pendiriannya terhadap kesinambungan tradisi, Mardziah juga hanya menggunakan bahan-bahan import berikutan kualiti benangnya yang lebih berkilat. Bekalan benang emasnya diterbangkan khas dari Jerman manakala kain baldunya pula diperolehi dari England, Korea dan Jepun. “Pada zaman lalu, kebanyakan produk tekat emas digunakan oleh golongan sultan untuk manghadiri majlis-majlis penting. Justeru, bahan-bahannya perlu diimport dari luar negara,” jelasnya. Menerusi sentuhan tangan yang mahir, ketelitian dan tahap kesabaran yang tinggi, hasil sulaman sudah pastinya kemas dan elegan! Sulaman benang emas lebih menyerlah pada kain berona terang. Lazimnya, sulaman dihasilkan pada kain berona gelap seperti merah manggis, biru laut dan ungu diraja. Hasilnya perlu selembut sutera ketika disentuh.

Melatih Generasi Baharu Hari ini, segalanya telah berubah. Tekat emas bukan lagi dikhususkan untuk golongan bangsawan. “Sejak tahun 1960-an, kebanyakan produk tekat emas seperti beg tangan dan kasut semakin dikomersilkan secara meluas dan digunakan ketika majlis perkahwinan,” katanya. Perubahan positif ini telah membuka peluang kepada golongan usahawan wanita seperti Mardziah yang kini mengusahakan sebuah kedai kecil di Kuala Kangsar sejak 1997. Hanya enam

daripada 13 orang tukang tekatnya adalah staf sepenuh masa. Harga setiap produk kecil boleh mencecah RM200 (USD48). Kos pakej-pakej perkahwinan pula berharga antara RM2,200 (USD530) sehingga RM6,000 (USD1,450) bergantung kepada rekaan tertentu. Cabaran utama dalam bidang ini terletak pada kos bahan-bahannya yang mahal dan semakin meningkat. Keadaan ini menggesa Mardziah agar berubah bagi mempercepatkan produktiviti tekat emas. Mesin pemotong digunakan bagi membantunya menghasilkan pencontoh. Beliau turut mempelajari teknologi baharu agar dapat bergerak seiring dengan keperluan dunia digital hari ini. Baginya, seni tekat emas diyakini akan terus diminati pada masa akan datang. Minat generasi muda terhadap seni kraftangan ini dilihat semakin meningkat. Ini sekali gus mendorong pembukaan pelbagai kelas vokasional untuk seni tekat. “Dahulu, susah. Tiada orang yang ajar. Hanya orang-orang lama yang tahu. Kini, ramai yang dah mahir sebab ada banyak kelas,” tambahnya. Di sekitar kawasan Kuala Kangsar sahaja, terdapat 30 hingga 40 orang tukang tekat. “Sekarang kami juga melatih anak-anak muda. Kebanyakannya sudah mahir dalam seni tekat. Anak-anak saya yang masih bersekolah pun tahu buat,” kongsi ibu beranak enam itu. Kebanyakan anak didiknya juga mengadakan4 bengkel bagi menjana sumber pendapatan. Bagi meningkatkan tahap kesedaran orang ramai dan memudahkan pengunjung yang mahu mengenali dan menghayati warisan seni tekat emas tersebut, pelbagai kelas dan bengkel demonstrasi diadakan. “Semoga warisan seni tekat emas khususnya sulaman tangan akan terus dipelihara dan tidak pupus ditelan zaman. Kraftangan ini akan terus kekal jika lebih ramai pewarisnya.” ■

secures the gold threads onto the fabric, ensuring the cutout is completely covered by the threads to give it a finer finish. Complex designs can take Mardziah up to two weeks to complete. Per tradition, Mardziah only uses imported materials. According to her, the gold threads in Malaysia do not have the same quality and lustre as the kinds in other countries. She gets her thread supply from Germany, while velvet pieces are brought in from England, Korea and Japan. When done with trained hands, an eye for detail and lots of patience, the embroidery comes out neat and elegant. The gold threads gleam in vivid contrast against the bright fabric, typically fashioned in dark colours like maroon, navy blue or royal purple. When you run your fingers over it, the fine thread work should feel as smooth as silk.

Training A New Generation Times have changed and tekat emas is no longer reserved for the rich. “Since the 1960s, it has become more commercialised. Many people use it during weddings such as for handbags and shoes,” she says. To Mardziah, this shift opens doors for budding female entrepreneurs. She now owns a small shop in Kuala Kangsar that has been in operation since 1997. There are 13 artists working for her, six of whom are full-time staff. They can sell small souvenirs for up to USD48 (RM200) apiece, while wedding packages can cost between USD530 (RM2,200) to USD1,450 (RM6,000), depending on the selected designs. The business poses challenges. The materials used in tekat emas are expensive and costs are increasing. Mardziah has also made changes to quicken the process. Rather than carve out the template on her own, she uses a cutter.

Nevertheless, Mardziah estimates there are around 30 to 40 embroiderers across Kuala Kangsar. “Right now, we also train tekat students. Many of them have become good at it. Even my children who are still in school know how to do it,” says the mother of six. To raise awareness of the art, she has started providing demonstrations and workshops to Kuala Kangsar’s visitors. They won’t have enough time to finish embroidering the whole handicraft within a few hours, but it lets them understand the value of this heritage. “I hope tekat emas, especially hand-sewn tekat emas, can be preserved so that the craft will not ebb away with time. The Wonders Of Palm Vitamin E Tocotrienols

ur brain undergoes more changes than any other organ as we grow older. While some of these changes are due to the natural consequences of ageing, we may develop conditions that can also affect our brain. The brain consumes more energy than any other organ in the body, at roughly 20 percent, says Professor Yuen Kah Hay of Universiti Sains Malaysia. It is nourished by a massive network of blood vessels. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Therefore, any damage to the blood vessels can lead to degeneration of brain tissues, possibly leading to neurodegenerative disorders such as cognitive dysfunction, dementia and Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s disease,â&#x20AC;? he says. Hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and diabetes are just some of the conditions that can damage the fine blood vessels in our brain. Controlling the risk factors of such conditions would be very helpful to maintain our brain health and against damage. Professor Yuen recommends living a healthy lifestyle comprising a balanced diet and regular physical activity.

In a recent study on 121 human volunteers with WMLs, it was found that the mean lesion volume of the WMLs increased after one year, and further increased after two years in the case of patients who were not given tocotrienol supplements. Those given tocotrienol supplements did not show any significant changes in their lesions, suggesting that tocotrienols are neuroprotective in nature. Studies have shown that WMLs are closely associated with cognitive decline and dementia. Hence, tocotrienols have the potential to be used in the preventive treatment of such neurodegenerative disorders. Their neuroprotective activity may help reduce injury to brain tissues during an ischemic stroke. There is much to learn about the brain and why we need to nourish it to cope with the changes as we age.

If we need a little extra help, neuroprotective supplements such as tocotrienols can be helpful. With its important nutrients, tocotrienol, a member of the Vitamin E family, is one of the best sources of brain food. Given the important role that Vitamin E plays in maintaining the health and functions of the nervous system, tocotrienols, therefore, have an important part to play. Palm oil is one of the richest sources of tocotrienols and it is formulated into soft gelatin capsules with specified dose strengths (50, 100 or 200 mg per capsule) to provide optimal benefits when taken as a supplement. These supplements benefit the elderly as well as those who are younger but have risk factors that can lead to neurological problems such as stroke and dementia. The benefits of tocotrienol can be seen in studies on white matter lesions (WMLs). These are lesions that are formed in the white matter region of the brain, often due to small blood vessel disease and other conditions that can cause degeneration of nerve fibres in that region.

CABIN LUGGAGE HANDLING Passenger and crew safety onboard our flights is our highest priority. In compliance with the airline’s policy and in observing Occupational, Safety and Health Regulations requirements, cabin crew are no longer required to stow passengers’ hand luggages into the overhead stowage compartment. This is to minimise occupational hazard and ergonomic risks faced by cabin crew in the aircraft. Cabin crew on duty will, however, assist passengers travelling with infants, young passengers travelling alone, the elderly, and passengers with reduced mobility. Passengers who are fit and in good health must carry, stow and secure their own hand luggages on board. Hand luggage exceeding the 7kg weight limit is required to be checked in before boarding.

PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PED) For safety reasons and in line with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia guidelines, mobile phones and all PEDs must be switched off once aircraft doors are closed. Whilst cruising, devices placed in flight mode may be used. The devices must again be switched off during the approach for landing until the aircraft is parked at the terminal building. Devices transmitting strong signals must remain switched off throughout the flight, until disembarkation. The Captain may prohibit the use of devices that can interfere with the aircraft’s system.

LITHIUM BATTERIES Lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries for portable electronic devices (PEDs), including medical devices must not exceed 2g for lithium metal batteries and 100Wh for lithium ion batteries. All spare batteries, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for PEDs must be carried in passengers’ carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. For PEDs containing non-spillable batteries, they must be 12V or less or 100Wh or less. A maximum of two spare batteries may be carried. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.

ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES Electronic cigarettes must be carried on one’s person or in carry-on baggage only. Recharging of the device in-flight is not permitted.

Captain Marvel is an excellent extension of a story universe that has come to dominate movies for the last 10 years, and it doesn’t look like it will stop soon. I don’t know what’s more dazzling: This new Captain Marvel movie or the genius of the long-term thinking that has been put into plotting out the whole Marvel universe.

Stung by the criticism that its top superheroes are all men (Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow doesn’t have any super powers), Marvel has answered the enormous success of DC’s Wonder Woman with Captain Marvel, the story of a regular human given super powers so enormous that they could dwarf anything that has come before. The movie barely scratches the surface of what she could potentially do, but from what I’ve seen already, she completely up-ends everything I thought I knew about the superhero laws of physics. She is Marvel’s woman with powers that equal DC’s Superman. I’m not going to ruin the plot of Captain Marvel’s genesis for you because her identity and life’s purpose are very cleverly revealed to us and to her in stages so that the movie ends in a very different place from where we imagined it might at the beginning. Unlike the DC universe, Marvel has barely put a foot wrong. DC faced a backlash after going way too dark and adult with Batman and with Superman before veering in the completely opposite direction with the near-slapstick and, well, comic-strip Aquaman that must have been aimed squarely at 13-year-olds. Marvel on the other hand has succeeded in appealing to the kid in us while also working to grow older with us. In creating an abundance of characters with slightly different demographic appeals (from aging, super-rich Tony Stark to life’s loser Ant Man and now Captain Marvel), Marvel has threaded a complex web of stories that speak to each other. The movies age with the actors in real time and when that story strand ends, another will emerge to take over. And then, who knows, in five years, the character might have a rebirth?

THE ACCOUNTANT

CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME? Based on the true story of how celebrity biographer Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy) fell from her heights as a New York Times bestselling author and was unable to pay her rent or feed her cat but suddenly found temporary success selling letters she forged of the dead celebrities she knew so well. But the success was only temporary, and the FBI closed in on her and her inept partner-in-crime (Richard E. Grant). I enjoy a good superhero movie, but Can You Ever Forgive Me? helps to remind us that movies can be about more than action, noise and a one-eyed man called Fury. They can also be about characters that are not saving the world but are down-on-their-luck. And it can be about great acting without the distraction of computer-generated special effects. Melissa McCarthy is one of the funniest people alive, but she’s proving that she can be a dramatic actor with heart, without taking the schmaltzy roles that Robin Williams chose. Richard E. Grant is compelling as a selfish conman in a role that might tell us what happened to his character in Withnail and I (1987). Both won Oscar nominations for their performances. Turning clichés about the romance of writing and New York on their heads (Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw would have died in this

Perhaps because I come from a family of accountants, it was hard for me to imagine that a movie called The Accountant could be a high-octane thriller about a savant, Bondlike, ninja-like assassin who happens to also be incredibly good at doing sums. I consider being good at maths to be a super power, which might be why I enjoy The Accountant so much (I’ve watched it several times). Ben Affleck is the criminal underworld’s accountant who can be trusted to keep secrets because he has lived his entire life anonymously beyond the government’s control. Diagnosed with a high functioning form of autism, he shies away from people and sensory overload, and his only “friend” is a computerised voice that manages his work. After being persuaded to take on a seemingly safe job of corporate forensic accounting, he finds himself having to fight to save not just himself but also a young accountant (Anna Kendrick). What is so enjoyable about The Accountant is not that it is simply an action thriller but that the various plotlines, and the maths, need to be solved and unfolded. It is a journey of twists and discoveries as well as action.

A fateful encounter in a singing competition she did not win catapulted Malaysian singer Misha Omar into the limelight in the early 2000s. With her dynamic and expressive voice that transitions smoothly between gentle and powerful notes, her sentimental pop ballads took the local music industry by storm. Her recent years have been defined by more live performances than studio work, caring for her family, as well as ventures into acting in film, television and theatre. Going Places catches up with her amid her busy schedule to hear her story and views. Tell us a bit about yourself. I am Misha Omar. Not many of you know that my name is Samiha@Aisha binti Omar. I am 37 years old and married with two kids. I grew up in a big family with seven siblings in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. How and when did you first get into music? It happened in 2001 when I joined this singing competition organised by RTM (Bintang RTM) and during full dress rehearsal, I met Datuk Adnan Abu Hassan (the late renowned musician and composer who mentored many

famous Malaysian singers, including Dato’ Sri Siti Nurhaliza, Fauziah Latiff and Dayang Nurfaizah). He had faith in my talent and brought me to BMG Music Malaysia. From there, we worked on my first album, which was released in 2002. How would you describe yourself as a singer? I don’t see myself as just a singer. I think I am more a storyteller, but in song. With a career spanning more than a decade, what are some of the challenges you have faced? The biggest challenge for me was two years ago, when I lost my voice right after giving birth to my son, Idris. Thankfully, I managed to recover my voice after attending lots of vocal classes with (vocal coach and songstress) Datuk Syafinaz Selamat. The music industry is unforgiving, and with many new singers being discovered all the time. How do you ensure you remain relevant to your fans? I don’t have a special strategy for this. I believe in pure talent, staying humble and working hard. Do not give up on learning. What has been the most memorable moment in your 18-year career? The most memorable moment in my career was when I heard my song being played on the radio for the first time. It gave me goosebumps! What inspires you in your music and in life? Honesty. When you are honest, you will give your all in life, your career and whatever you do. Who are some of your musical icons, and what is it about them that you admire? I have so much respect for Datuk Syafinaz Selamat. She’s a singer, a vocal teacher and a lecturer at the same time. She is so passionate about what she is doing right now, and she has helped a lot of people, including me. From her, I learned not to give up on learning. Each day, you learn something new and you’ve got to improve yourself from day to day. What do you think of the Malaysian music scene? I think the Malaysian music industry is growing. There’s a lot of new talent today and they’re venturing into multiple genres, not just pop. The use of social media has really helped them to boost their own marketing to make them mainstream. As an artist who has been around, I welcome them with open arms as I can learn a lot from them as well. How has social media changed you? I use social media as a way to reach out to my fans and to give them updates on my career. Less than half of my posts are about my personal life. Social media helps us a lot, especially when you’re about to launch a new single or album and you want the public to know about it. It really helps to generate a lot of hype over upcoming concerts or new singles. Social media makes a lot of things easier. How do you react to criticism? There are two types of critics out there, and I choose to listen to the constructive ones who will motivate me and make me a better person. For the rest who are critical and are always trying to put me down, I just turn a blind eye and ignore them. Taking in constructive criticism is what helps us to change.

Winning Big Lucky winner Eric Ngu Ting Wu walked away with a Malaysia Airlines Dream Holiday package worth about USD24,000 (RM100,000) in the DuitNow Launch Contest, a collaboration between Payments Network Malaysia Sdn Bhd (PayNet) and Malaysia Airlines. Launched in December, DuitNow is a service that facilitates fund transfers using mobile, MyKad or business registration numbers.
