a diamond solitaire ring and the trend has sustained ever since. Ask any girl for her stone of choice and it would be a diamond. For more than half a century, coloured gemstones have stayed in the shadows of the diamond. But in the last decade or so, demand for emeralds, rubies, sapphires and other coloured stones has soared, pushed into vogue by Kate Middleton’s Ceylon sapphire engagement ring. Today, Southeast Asia is one of the best places to buy these dazzling gems. But with so many choices, where does one start? In our story about gems and gemology on pages 52-55, get a few tips and pointers from Lucy Walker, a gemologist with a jewellery design studio and school in the Kuala Lumpur neighbourhood of Bangsar.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 6 | March 2018

In our giving back to the community section this month, Senior Writer Eris Choo was in the highlands of Bario in Sarawak recently. Malaysia was one of the countries chosen by Volvo Trucks to be a recipient of its Seasonal Gift Programme last year. The commercial vehicle manufacturer chose to assist the Kelabit community in Bario by building a fire-fighting system to safeguard its longhouse settlement, the oldest in the area, as well as five eco-shelters along a 25-kilometre ancestral trail. The shelters act as a safe resting place for locals and hikers and are equipped with eco-friendly working toilets.

Julie Goh Editor

Many of us have heard the phrase “A Diamond Is Forever” but I bet most do not know its origins. In 1938, the world’s leading diamond mining and retailing company De Beers commissioned a Philadelphia-based advertising agency to come up with a slogan to make Americans fall in love with diamond engagement rings because sales were declining, and the precious gemstone was seen as an extravagance for the wealthy. Copywriter Frances Gerety of the advertising agency N.W. Ayer coined the slogan and since 1948, it has appeared in every De Beers engagement advertisement, suggesting that the diamond engagement ring is de rigueur and associated with eternal romance. The tagline and its advertising proposition were so successful that in 1951, jewellers reported that eight out of 10 American brides received

Volvo flew a group of media personnel to Bario to see first-hand the fire-fighting system and eco-shelters that have been built by the locals. As it would take about five to six days to reach the last of the shelters, the group decided to trek only to the first. Where it would take a local five hours to trek from the longhouse to the first ecoshelter and back, the media took 11 hours to make the trek and back. Along the way, they suffered fatigue and leech bites and a search party was even sent out to locate them! For her valiant effort, do read her story on pages 56-57! Compared to Bario, the Chinese city of Shanghai is light years away in terms of convenience and modernity. The commercial capital of China has it all: glitz, glamour, money, culture and culinary offerings that have evolved over the past 5,000 years. As if that is not enough, in the past year, it has been actively building a reputation as a cultural centre by opening new museums and performing art spaces as well as hosting international art fairs. If you’re in Shanghai for a short business trip, incorporate our 36 Hours in Shanghai guide for a quick cultural and culinary tour of the city. Till the next time, happy reading. ■

Surabaya, Indonesia

More than a centre of commerce, Indonesia’s second-largest city is a fun destination and gateway to Java’s natural wonders.

goingplacesmagazine.com / 33 / November 2017

Underrated City goingplacesmagazine.com / 32 / September 2017

Sorry, we missed your call.

Letter Of The Month I wanted to write after enjoying your November issue, particularly the article on Surabaya (‘Underrated City’) as I flew DPS-KUL-MEL with your incredible crew. I’m a long-time Malaysia Airlines customer and I was instantly at home on your comfortable A330. The crew were so hospitable and were more than helpful fixing an issue with my inflight entertainment unit. I am a big fan of Malay cuisine and the food service is just outstanding, and the delicious nasi lemak in transit at KLIA was great too! Thank you for making my travel so seamless. I literally can’t fault it. DANIEL ALAN, Melbourne, Australia

You didn’t? You should. Because your brand could be right here, right now. Put the power of Malaysia Airlines’ media to work for your brand and reach over a million passengers a month.

Malaysia Airlines has been my second home in the last seven years. I've been commuting between Kuala Lumpur/Bangkok/Jakarta twice a week without fail since 2010. Whether good or bad, it is still my first choice to fly. I have seen the good, the bad and the worst of the airline, but one thing remains of Malaysia Airlines and that is its Malaysian Hospitality. (I call it Malaysia Airlines Hospitality). From ground to air, the warm hospitality of the crew members will always astonish me. I remain a faithful customer because of it. YEOH AIK CHEONG, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

I have been flying to and from Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu ever since I began my studies in Kuala Lumpur in 2014, a sad year for the airline. However, I have never lost my confidence and faith in your service. It is good to see that Malaysia Airlines is making improvements year after year in various aspects of its operations e.g. online booking, customer service and in-flight entertainment. The first thing I do whenever I am onboard is to reach out for Going Places. The magazine’s articles on Kota Kinabalu, my home, which is a tourism city are most memorable. I hope the team will continue to feature articles on attractions in Sabah and Sarawak. LIM CHUN YUAN, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Advertise with us. Each month, Going Places will select a Letter Of The Month and the winner will receive a gift. For March, the winning letter will receive a 3D2N stay at Theme Park Hotel, Resorts World Genting, Malaysia, inclusive of breakfast.

JEJU TOURISM ORGANISATION

goingplacesmagazine.com | 12 | March 2018

Blazing Ceremony On the first full moon of the lunar calendar, the Jeju Fire Festival is held to pray for good harvest and good health in the new year. The highlight of the event is a re-enactment of the tradition practised by farmers in the region – that of burning pastures to rid the land of pests and to allow for new grass to grow. However, instead of fields, locals and visitors put the torch to the 520-metre-high Saebyeol Oreum, a small extinct volcano. The festival is a good time to partake in cultural programmes and folk activities as there will be fireworks, laser shows, concerts, traditional craft-making, as well as food and drink vendors. Dates for the fire lighting ceremony may vary according to weather conditions.

Charitable Cause Now into its 12th year, the Kota Kinabalu Jazz Fest is an annual not-for-profit jazz extravaganza organised by the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu and the Society of Performing Arts Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The two-night event brings together talents from around the world, with a strong line-up of local and international performers. Slated to perform this year is American songstress Sybil Thomas, among others. Aside from music, there will also be food and drinks from some of the best restaurants in town, as well as a series of fringe events and a talent search held before the main festival. Proceeds from ticket sales will be used to fund deserving community projects in rural areas of Sabah.

When: 1-4 March Where: Saebyeol Oreum, Jeju City, South Korea

When: 9-10 March Where: Sutera Harbour Marina Golf & Country Club, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia

An Emerald Spectacle

Glorious Gardens

Held in honour of the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick’s Day is a celebration of Irish heritage, arts and culture. It typically involves public parades, traditional dance and music performances, marching bands, as well as the wearing of green attire or shamrock, a young sprig of clover often associated with Saint Patrick and used as a symbol of Ireland. Celebrations in Dublin, Belfast and major Irish cities are grand and last for several days, while places such as London, New York, Boston, and Montreal in Canada have equally vibrant festivities, which often include drinking alcohol in a carnival-esque atmosphere. Although the event is highly commercialised, its spiritual roots are still observed by a large number of people who attend church services on the day.

Every year, thousands of visitors flock to the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show to catch the best in landscape design, gardening, floristry and horticulture from Australia and around the world. Lounge amid the blooms with a spot of tea, explore the Show Gardens and the Great Hall of Flowers, or shop for retail products and art pieces. The event is made livelier with exciting activities, from flower arrangement competitions to bridal shows, music and dance performances, food stalls and more. Participate in hands-on workshops with floral houses to learn tips on garden care and take your own floral arrangements home. Not to be missed is Gardens by Twilight, which sees the venue coming to life after sundown with lights and live music.

When: 17 March Where: Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom, and countries with Irish diaspora

Vibe-Dining With A View

January saw the opening of The Spread Eagle, London’s first vegan pub in Hackney that features food and drinks without any animal byproducts like egg and dairy. The food is not bland – boring salads and hippie hemp juice aren’t on the menu – thanks to Meriel Armitage, founder of cult favourite Club Mexicana, who brings Mexican-inspired street food like tacos with vegan chorizo, vegan fried chicken scallops and beer-battered “tofish”. At the bar, you’ll find a range of 16 beers on tap that are made by vegan producers, a concise list of organic wines, and a range of cocktails that employ innovative vegan twists.

One of Singapore’s most talked-about additions to the dining scene is Lavo Italian Restaurant & Rooftop at Marina Bay Sands. Located at Sands SkyPark, the New York-inspired restaurant, bar and club is the result of a collaboration between Marina Bay Sands and Tao Group, one of the most profitable nightlife, entertainment and dining businesses in the U.S. The kitchen is led by executive chef Ralph Scamardella, who brings his 30 years of experience to showcase the best of Italian-American cuisine through dishes like chicken parmigiana, penne a la vodka and the restaurant’s signature onepound meatball topped with an insane amount of ricotta cheese.

Visitors are also invited to add to the exhibition themselves with a number of canvases and painting materials available to use, encouraging those who partake to consider their own approach to creativity. Modernist Makeover The Centre Pompidou in Paris hosts Pago Pago: Latiff Mohidin (19601969), an exhibition presented by the National Gallery of Singapore in collaboration with the Musée National d'Art Moderne. Born in Malaysia, Latiff is one of Southeast Asia’s leading modernist artists and his Pago Pago series of paintings, sculptures and prints were created during the early sixties while he studied in Berlin. “This InFocus exhibition is designed to unravel the complexities of key works that Latiff Mohidin produced in the 1960s,” explains Catherine David, Deputy Director, Musée National d'Art Moderne of Centre Pompidou and co-curator of the show. “A decade which could be characterised as a moment when Southeast Asia established itself as a locus within the major redraft of Modernism.”

Cultural Preservation Malaysian illustrator and pop artist Tiffany Choong presents her first solo exhibition Treasures of a Straits Chinese in Penang this month. Focusing on themes of identity and cultural heritage, Choong’s show is a daily sketch project that continuously asks the question: “Who am I?” Born in Penang, amidst Chinese traditions and modern Western ideals, Choong’s complex upbringing in evident in her work. Worlds Collide From this month, the Olivier Malingue Gallery in London presents Surrealism: A Conversation. The show gathers iconic works of art from some of the most significant movers and shakers of the surrealist movement, including Salvador Dalí, Óscar Domínguez and Max Ernst, and will cover a period of 40 years from 1923 to the early 1960s. The show explores how the works reflect the “Surrealist Manifesto”, a text that was written in 1924 by French poet and forerunner of the surrealism movement Andre Breton. In essence, his text described the surrealist canvas as a window into another reality. Visit the show and dive right into an unknown realm.

Time Series Malaysian artist Nizar Kamal Ariffin presents his 2018 Siri Masa at ArtdecorKL this month. Through his characteristic bold strokes, line intersections and exuberant colours depicting lively movements toward the horizon, he explores the ups and downs of life through time. Both an optimistic and romantic production, subtle heartbeats and shapes can be seen in each artwork, reminding us that life’s struggles are an integral part of a fulfilled life and that things can change in a matter of minutes!

WINDOW OR AISLE

Rugby goingplacesmagazine.com | 26 | March 2018

A friend of mine has recently become a father for the first time and he’s worried about how he will raise his son. Will he allow his growing child the freedom to go out and play and ride his bicycle unsupervised to have adventures just as he did when he was growing up? Or will he be like every other modern parent and keep his child locked up in the house because he is afraid that the world is now a dangerous place? My friend would like his child to become independent-minded and tough enough to take on all of life’s challenges, and so he would like his child to roam free. But obviously, he will keep the child locked up and safe. You have to these days. It’s not the 1970s anymore. I grew up in the 1970s and my school made me play rugby to toughen me up. I was ten years old. You may not know the game of rugby so let me explain the rules. It’s exactly like a battle in The Lord Of The Rings, and whoever is alive at the end of 60 minutes is declared the winner. I think a strange-shaped ball is also involved but I never understood its purpose because I made sure it never came near me. I’ve always been very short-sighted so I never had any idea what was happening on the pitch. If a vague, blurry blob started to grow bigger, then I knew that a mass of boys was coming towards me and that I had to run away. But if the blob stayed small then I knew I was safe. My school created a team for even the worst rugby players, and I was forced to join a team called the 5th 15, which meant I was the 75th worst rugby player, and there weren’t even 75 boys in my year. We had to practise on a pitch that was on a slope so steep that when we played football on it, if you kicked the ball up the slope, then it would simply roll back down into your own goal. It was more like climbing Mount Everest than playing rugby, except without guide ropes and oxygen tanks. Eventually the day came when we had to play against another school, and I was terrified. I knew we were going to lose, so I wasn’t afraid of

March 2018_WindowOrAisle.indd 26

that. Our best player had to wear an eyepatch, which meant he had no depth perception. If you threw the ball to him, it would always hit him in the face and then he would lamely clap his hands together two seconds later. It’s a sporting cliché to say that a team was “crushed” but we

were literally crushed. The vague, blurry blob constantly came towards me and then rolled over me. I tried running away and I even tried to surrender to the enemy but nothing worked. And then, amid all the mayhem and violence, something happened to me. For one brief moment in my life, I decided to try being brave. One of the enemy was running towards me. He appeared to be holding the strange-shaped ball, so I guessed that he was the focus of the game at that moment. I was the last person between him and the end of the pitch, where I knew that something significant would happen (scoring a goal? match point?). I decided that I would stop him and I ran towards him. For five strides, I felt like I was the strongest and bravest person in the whole world even if I had no idea what I was going to do when I actually got to him. And then he put out his hand and I ran straight into it. I saw a brief flash of white light as I collapsed onto the ground and he ran past me into his own glory. My moment of bravery when I was ten years old did nothing to change the game and nobody else noticed it. But I noticed it, I was surprised by it and I am still surprised by it. I didn’t want to be playing rugby and I don’t ever want to play it again but I must reluctantly admit that because of it, I discovered that somewhere inside me there lurks some courage. I know my friend wants his newborn son to grow up experiencing the freedom and mayhem that he enjoyed and somehow managed to survive. But I know he won’t do it. It’s not the 1970s anymore. ■

MY GUIDE | Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Capital On The Up The Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh is shifting at a rapid pace, making it an exhilarating place to visit. Words Marissa Carruthers | Illustration Josephine Skapare | Art Direction Euric Liew

Getting Around TAKE A TUK-TUK Tuk-tuks (two-wheeled carriages pulled by a motorcycle) are the main mode of transport and one is never far away, with “Tuk-tuk, Madam” and “Tuk-tuk, Sir” ringing heavily in the air. Negotiate the price first and triple-check the driver knows where he’s going.

GRAB A MOTODOP goingplacesmagazine.com | 30 | March 2018

Motodops – or motorbike taxis – can be found on pretty much every street corner, offering a cheaper alternative to tuk-tuks. This mode of transport is also great for weaving in and out of Phnom Penh’s ever-increasing traffic.

DOWNLOAD AN APP The last year has seen an explosion in taxi apps, meaning tourists no longer need to fret about negotiating prices or reaching their final destination. PassApp and its growing fleet of tuk-tuks dominate the market, with Uber and Grab having recently launched.

Get Exploring VISIT THE FAIRGROUND Join the hordes of Cambodian families who gather at the outdoor fairground on Koh Pich – a small manmade island – every evening. Sample local food, drive a bumper car or hop on the Ferris wheel. In true Cambodian style, expect loud music and flashing lights.

ATTEND A SHOW Delve into Cambodia’s rich culture with an evening of entertainment, courtesy of Cambodian Living Arts. Each night, performers take to the stage behind the National Museum

for a dazzling evening of traditional dance, music and re-tellings of age-old tales.

HIT THE STREETS Discover the capital and its quirks on Khmer Heritage Tours’ jaunts. The walking tours are led by local students, and include a 1960s New Khmer Architecture option, taking in revered architect Vann Molyvann’s works, a history, culture and architecture tour, and exploring the city by cyclo.

GET ARTY Drink some of the best coffee in town at Java Café before enjoying local contemporary art in the upstairs gallery. Or take a stroll down the stretch of Street 178, adjacent to the National Museum, which is lined with studios and interesting galleries.

Retail Therapy STOCK UP ON SOUVENIRS A trip to Phnom Penh isn’t complete without a trip to the market, and what better place to bag some bargains to take home than the Russian Market, a top spot to grab goodies, from locally produced art and handicraft to clothes, shoes and everything in between. Wear your haggling hat.

EAT WELL For fine local dining, Malis is the best place in town. Run by Cambodian celebrity chef Luu Meng, who has worked with Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay, the restaurant serves a selection of traditional Cambodian cuisine given a modern twist.

BEAT THE THIRST Step back in time to colonial Cambodia and enjoy happy hour at Raffles le Royal’s Elephant Bar (4 pm to 9 pm). Bassac Lane is always vibrant after dark, thanks to its boutique bars and eateries. Or kick back and enjoy sunset with a cocktail at Vehaa’s rooftop terrace.

TOUL TOM POUNG

Escape The City

As a neighbourhood on the rise, Toul Tom Poung – home to Russian Market – is the city’s hippest place to hang out. Try Vibe for an organic, vegan lunch, Eleven One Kitchen for a local dinner, Long After Dark for evening drinks and Tini for a caffeine boost.

VISIT THE OLD CAPITAL

BOEUNG KENG KANG 1 Commonly referred to as BKK1, this elite area is packed with boutique hotels, restaurants and coffee shops. Farm to Table serves up fresh food in an open-air setting, complemented by friendly cats and chickens. Patio Hotel has a stunning rooftop infinity pool and Street 278 is teeming with places to eat and drink.

Head out to the former royal capital of Oudong, which sits about 40 kilometres from Phnom Penh. Having served as the capital for more than 250 years until it relocated in 1866, the mountain is home to ancient temples, stupas and shrines, accessed by climbing 509 steps – the views make the effort worthwhile.

HEAD TO THE ISLANDS Koh Dach, or Silk Island, sits a short tuk-tuk and ferry ride away from Phnom Penh. Silk weaving is the main industry, with a Silk Centre showcasing the intricate process, with picnic spots on the Mekong and a swimming area. ■

goingplacesmagazine.com | 31 | March 2018

Loung Ung’s moving biography, First They Killed My Father, follows the story of a five-year-old growing up under the Khmer Rouge. Oscarwinning 1984 film The Killing Fields is another worthwhile watch, telling the story of journalists Dith Pran and Sydney Schanberg during the Khmer Rouge reign.

Sleep, Eat, Drink BOUNTY OF BOUTIQUE BEDS Phnom Penh is home to a delightful selection of well-priced boutique hotels. Villa Langka, The Plantation and iRoHa Garden Hotel and Resort all offer leafy reprieves from chaotic capital life.

About the writer Marissa Carruthers is a UK writer based in Phnom Penh. Her love of Cambodia’s rich culture and heritage, and the Khmer kindness has kept her feet firmly on Cambodian soil for the last five years.

Practical Tips How are you?

HOT & HUMID Cambodia is hot and humid, with the dry season running from December to April and monsoon the rest of the year. April is the hottest month, with humidity levels hitting breaking point.

WHAT TO WEAR Cambodia is a Buddhist country, and traditionally, the population is reserved, so it pays to dress accordingly. If you’re visiting a temple or religious site, keep your shoulders and knees covered, and take off your shoes before entering.

Good Morning Thank you

GET TALKING Cambodians speak Khmer, but in the capital, English is widely spoken. However, picking up a few Khmer phrases ahead of your trip will impress locals.

KEEP IT RIEL Cambodia’s currency is the Riel; however, the US dollar is more widely used – especially for transactions above USD1. Keep your dollar bills crisp and untorn, otherwise they will be rejected

Airport Shopping As air travel sees record growth and airports position themselves as shopping destinations, retailers are capitalising on passenger spending. Eraman, Malaysia’s largest airport retail store operator, is making sure it’s not left behind, shares its General Manager Zulhikam Ahmad. Eraman Malaysia

Tell us more about Eraman. What kind of products can we find in your stores?

How many outlets do you operate?

Eraman operates more than 50 retail and F&B outlets as well as kiosks at KLIA and klia2, airports in Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Penang, Langkawi and Labuan. Due to the fact that we carry products from multiple categories, our offerings differ depending on location and store size. Other than Eraman, there are also local and international operators who run their businesses

at the airports, thus creating a competitive environment with more options for shoppers to choose from. Eraman was first established in 1993 at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, and you’ve since grown to service seven airports. What has been the biggest challenge you have faced in running the business to-date?

I joined Eraman in 2014, and in my early tenure with the company, our business was impacted by the MH370 incident, which was ferrying mainly passengers from mainland China. This incident resulted in a slump in the number of Chinese visitors to Malaysia.

We carry a diverse range of products, our core being liquor and tobacco, perfumes and cosmetics, chocolates and confectionery, toys, as well as convenience store goods. Our lifestyle range features products from renowned brands such as Bally and Swarovski, in addition to other branded and designer watches, leather

goods and sunglasses. Meanwhile, our food and beverage retailers encompass brands such as Marrybrown, Gloria Jean’s Coffee, Bibik Heritage, Food Garden and more.

Success can never be achieved alone. Hard work and dedication from the team have made us into what we are today.

We had, up until that point, been comfortable with our dominant position in the retail space, so when the downturn hit, it was bad. As a result, measures had to be taken to realign the business, following which we restructured the organisation and reduced the number of outlets to become a smaller but more profitable outfit.

There are abundant choices for shoppers, all under one roof. Moving forward, we are also looking to have our products sold online in order to provide even more convenience to shoppers.

This right-sizing strategy reaped its benefits as Eraman is now in a much more competitive position and saw double-digit sales growth in 2016, in comparison to 2015 when we still grew but not profitably. We have remained profitable ever since.

Teamwork from all departments! Success can never be achieved alone. Hard work and dedication from the team have made us into what we are today. It is a great honour to have staff who are committed and who have worked hard throughout the years for us to receive that recognition. Some of our recent awards include Best Supporting Partner at the 2017 MAHB Concessionaires Awards Night, as well as the KULINARY Top 25 Dining Choice Awards for one of our F&B outlets, Bibik Heritage, during the KULINARY Dining Choice Awards 2017 organised by Malaysia Airports Berhad.

What differentiates Eraman from other airport retailers?

We focus on the unique aspects of our products, and we also apply a mix of marketing vehicles that create presence, image and a clear marketing message to our customers. As the largest travel retail and duty-free retailer in the airports that we operate, Eraman carries wellknown brands, to name a few: Chanel, Christian Dior, Bally, Estee Lauder, Lancome, Swarovski, Lindt, Godiva, Chivas, Johnny Walker and more.

March 2018_InProfile_Eraman04.indd 34

Eraman has consistently achieved recognition throughout the years. What has contributed to this success?

How do you keep shoppers coming back for more?

We try to reinforce the value that we can offer to shoppers by introducing umbrella campaigns

for all Eraman outlets nationwide. This includes the Eraman Shopping Extravaganza Buy & Win campaign, which was held in 2017, and again this year, where we awarded lucrative prizes that included a BMW318i for each of the campaign’s three cycles. Apart from this, Eraman works very closely with our principals, brand partners and suppliers to ensure we have the latest products and those that are in demand or trending, to cater to our shoppers. This year, Eraman will celebrate its 25th-year anniversary. In conjunction with our Silver Jubilee celebrations, many exciting programmes and offerings will be available in-store such as discounts, contests, holidays, cash vouchers and more. We plan to provide the best shopping experience possible for our customers. What are some of the current challenges in the industry?

One of the biggest challenges is to sustain the level of service delivered to our customers, while constantly being aware of evolving trends and the opportunity to deliver on current customer needs and preferences. We also have to keep up with our competitors and make sure our offerings are up to par, if not better, than others. How is Eraman working to provide a more seamless shopping experience?

In keeping up with the times and going cashless, we have partnered with ALIPAY, the world’s largest online and mobile payment platform, to provide added convenience to airport passengers and to Chinese travellers, in particular. Shoppers from China will be able to conveniently pay with their ALIPAY personal QR codes through their

smart phones, which allows for transactions to be done in Yuan (China’s currency), without having to worry about the exchange rate. All Eraman retail and F&B outlets in KLIA and klia2, including our duty free emporium and lifestyle stores, began accepting ALIPAY in June 2017. We are also in discussion with local

partners to provide a secure and fast e-payment platform via QR codes. What plans are in the pipeline for the company in 2018?

While there will always be room for improvement, we expect it to be another

great year for us as we continuously strive to provide the best travel retail offerings, maintain our great service and improve on the level of customer satisfaction. We hope to expand on our offerings in time to come, whilst strengthening brands that are already onboard. Together, these should help boost up revenue for the company. â–

EXPLORE | Shanghai, China

Shanghai’s appeal has long been its breathtaking skyline, glitzy nightlife and brash, anything-goes attitude. A cultural mecca it was not. In recent years, though, China’s commercial capital has started to develop a more sophisticated side. A host of high-profile museum openings and the launch of several influential art fairs — ART021, West Bund Art & Design and Photofairs Shanghai — have solidified Shanghai’s status as a major player in the Asian art world, while new performing arts venues like the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Hall have vastly improved its theater and music offerings. Yes, there are still shopping malls aplenty, but also, increasingly, independent bookstores, creative entrepreneurs and seriously good coffee shops.

FRIDAY 3 pm | Art Stroll

goingplacesmagazine.com | 38 | March 2018

For a city its size, Shanghai had been famously short on two things — green space and art. To remedy that, the city splashed out to build its own Museum Mile, along with a riverside park, in a new district known as West Bund. The Yuz Museum, housed in a Sou Fujimoto-designed former aircraft hangar, has been at the forefront of the cultural awakening here, hosting highprofile shows featuring Andy Warhol, Alberto Giacometti and the Brooklyn-based artist KAWS in recent years. A short walk down the river is a fast-growing arts complex filled with studios and galleries, including the venerable ShanghART, which exhibits works by emerging Chinese artists and sells pieces by more established names like Zhou Tiehai and Ding Yi. Added to the mix last fall was another highly-anticipated gallery, the Tokyo-based Ota Fine Arts. 6 pm | Happy Hour On High

It’s hard to fathom that the futuristic skyline of the Pudong financial district was little more than farmland 30 years ago. Ponder that while sipping a cocktail and taking in the fantastic light show at sunset, when the gleaming towers are illuminated with flashing “I Heart Shanghai” messages, and boats, twinkling with lights, glide by on the river. Perches abound for this neonbathed sundowner, but the 30th floor balcony at the Hotel Indigo’s Char Bar offers one of the best vantage points — not to mention a highly drinkable Aperol spritz.

Shanghai’s newfound wealth has led to a revival of the decadence and debauchery of its pre-World War II years — minus the opium dens. The most ribald party in town can be found in the distant, gritty Hongkou district at The Pearl, a former Buddhist temple transformed into a cabaret club with plush red banquettes and two tiers of balconies surrounding an intimate stage. The programme runs the gamut from gender-bending drag and burlesque shows (trapeze artists and fire jugglers make frequent, heart-pounding appearances) to less risqué fare like “jazz diva” tribute concerts, featuring largely local performers.

SATURDAY

Original posters are on sale, as are Mao’s Little Red Books in English, French and even Tibetan. Next, take in the stately, early-20th century mansions along Wukang Road, built in an array of styles. Most are closed to the public, but the nearby Former Residence of Soong Ching-ling, better known as Madame Sun Yat-sen, is worth a visit for a peek at her lovely camphor-shaded garden and the 1950s-era Soviet limousine gifted to her by Josef Stalin. 12:30 pm | Slurp Your Lunch

The sign above the wall-mounted menu says it all: “Order now, stuff now, steam now, eat now.” At Lin Long Fang, freshness is a virtue — the hole-in-the-wall restaurant specialises in one thing, xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) and does it exceedingly well, making each batch to order. The cooking demonstration is something to behold — the talkative chefs roll, stuff and pinch each bao with swiftness and precision. And the dumplings themselves easily trump those found in more upmarket locales, particularly the delectable chun xiefen (pure crab). Napkins are a necessity as these morsels can be messy.

The Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre takes some effort to find — it’s in the basement of an apartment building — but inside is the collector Yang Pei Ming’s impressive display of Communist propaganda art, spanning the 1940s to the post-Mao Zedong years in the late 1970s.

Amid all the same-same luxury malls in Shanghai, there are a plethora of independent boutiques to be found. From the art deco lettering out front to the polished brass fan design arching above patrons on the ceiling, the intimate jazz bar Heyday evokes the glamour days of 1920s and ‘30s Shanghai when jazz flourished in the hedonistic foreign concessions. The drinks menu, too, gives a wink to jazz classics, with concoctions like “Minnie the Moocher” (Benedictine, amaro, lemon, yuzu marmalade and egg white), named after a song by Cab Calloway. Led by the RussianIsraeli pianist Oleg Roschin, a longtime fixture on the Shanghai jazz scene, the Heyday band plays nightly, fronted by a rotating cast of singers. Cover charges for the tables and booths vary, but seats in the bar area are free. And in a venue this cosy, there’s literally not a bad seat in the house.

SUNDAY 6 am | Bundrise Wake-up

Late-night revellers and early risers find common inspiration at the historic Bund this time of the day — the tranquil sight of pensioners practising tai chi as the sun rises over the Pudong skyline and the Huangpu River (known to some as a Bundrise). It’s also a great spot for a jog — north along the Bund across the century-old steel Waibaidu Bridge and then along Suzhou Creek. If this is too early for you, grab coffee instead at The Press, an atmospheric café in the beautifully restored, historic Shun Pao building, the former home of one of Shanghai’s first daily newspapers. 10 am | Lofty Lookout

At 2,073 feet, Shanghai Tower, the secondtallest building on earth, doesn’t just dwarf the other skyscrapers around it, it makes them look laughably small. On a clear day, the bird’s-eye view from the observation deck on the 118th floor is equally impressive — an endless tableau of apartment blocks and office towers stretching to the horizon, interrupted only by the placid, snaking Huangpu. For skyscraper aficionados, the swooping, cylindrical tower also has an informative museum with all sorts of factoids. Not only does the building feature the world’s heaviest damper to prevent swaying (1,100 tonnes), it also has the world’s fastest elevators, whisking visitors to the top at an ear-popping 40 miles per hour. ■

mixing anchovies with salt, left to ferment for as long as six months. It has customarily been consumed by coastal villagers of northeastern Kelantan and Terengganu states, who enjoy it as a pungent, protein-packed condiment to complement rice and vegetables.

Pandan leaves, or screwpine, have been ubiquitous in Malaysian kitchens for generations. Nicknamed the vanilla of Southeast Asia, its comfortingly distinctive aroma has infused everything from Malaysian cakes to jellies and jams. It’s essential for constructing the country’s iconic offering of nasi lemak (rice cooked with coconut milk). It’s no flash-in-the-pan novelty.

But budu has the potential to make the leap into modern cookbooks, as reflected by respected local restaurants. When gastronomic temple Dewakan launched near Kuala Lumpur in 2015, its very first amuse-bouche was crispy edible ‘twigs’ paired with budu-spiked mayonnaise. Popular burger specialist myBurgerLab offers a fried chicken burger that’s garnished with a sauce that showcases budu-inspired dynamics for extra depth of flavour. Even trendy poke bowls can benefit from budu – one seafood venue, Eatomo, promises a ‘Pokelantan’ Bowl that’s crowned with candied fish floss laced with budu.

Buah keluak is notoriously painstaking to prepare. The raw seeds are poisonous and require being at least scrubbed and soaked in water for several days before cooking. But the effort is worthwhile; by scraping within the clam-shaped nut’s hard shell, you’ll find a creamy flesh that blends an olive-like earthiness with an aromatically bitter nuttiness. With a tar-like look, it is most famously savoured in Peranakan chicken braises and curries but is also applied in everything from fried rice to chilli paste. At Malaysia’s Bistro à Table, a modern French eatery, it was once turned into a tapenade spread on seared scallop cannelloni for a degustation dinner.

history. Once reputedly used for royal palace recipes in Malaysia’s eastern Pahang state, they remain a staple for the Peranakan Nyonya Straits-born Chinese and Kristang Eurasian communities of western peninsular Malaysia.

When English food doyenne Nigella Lawson proclaimed in 2017 that pandan was poised to become Britain’s next culinary craze, supplanting avocados and green tea powder, many Malaysians who heard the news nodded knowingly.

Still, bunga telang is versatile enough to transcend its traditional roots. Saan, a Thai restaurant in Auckland, New Zealand, has used the extract to bring an intriguing splash of colour to a cocktail called The Weeping Butterfly. As a bonus, bunga telang is believed to have wideranging health benefits, such as boosting the memory and battling stress.

Kerisik

goingplacesmagazine.com | 44 | March 2018

Coconuts rank among the cornerstones of Malaysian cuisine, boasting a myriad of uses. They can be grated and pan-toasted, transformed into slivers known as kerisik, bringing body and sweetness to curries such as Malaysian and Indonesian rendang, or sprinkled on salads for extra texture. These days, kerisik can be purchased in packets at supermarkets, though conventional wisdom insists they’re ideally ground by hand with a pestle and mortar, relying on fresh coconuts instead of canned desiccated ones.

eaten raw. Some families fry it with fish, but contemporary restaurants in Sabah have uncovered imaginative uses for tuhau, embedding it in meat flosses in Japanese-style rice bowls or even infusing it into apple crumbles for a lively tang.

Gula Melaka We’ve saved the sweetest for last: gula melaka, believed to have originated in southern Melaka state, is a sticky palm sugar, predominantly relished in liquid form, made from the sap of coconut tree flower buds. It’s lusciously nectarous, with caramel’s depth and decadence. Gula melaka has been a mainstay at local kopitiams (coffee shops) for decades, a must in refreshing desserts like sago pudding and cendol (an icy indulgence with green rice flour jelly strips). In recent years, it has surfaced at hip cafés and bars across Kuala Lumpur, transformed into flavours of ice cream, cupcakes or macarons, poured as a syrup over pancakes or waffles, and thrust into funky cocktails. ■

Tempoyak The durian, Malaysia’s undisputed king of fruits, is adored by countless locals, but it suffers a love-it-or-loathe-it reputation overseas for its powerful smell. What happens though when you take some mashed durian flesh, mix it thoroughly with salt, seal it in an air-tight container, and leave it to ferment at room temperature for five days? The result is tempoyak, a condiment that’s an acquired taste even for Malaysians. Tempoyak is typically cooked with coconut milk curries known as gulai (popularly with fish) or blended in chilli pastes called sambal. Its sour and salty flavours can vary, but at its most potent, it has been likened to ‘the blue cheese of Malaysia’. It could be spectacular for an intrepid chef seeking to thrill diners with a little-known but indelibly memorable ingredient. Alternatively, other fermented favourites in Malaysia include belacan (fermented shrimp sauce) and tapai (fermented alcoholic paste made from rice or cassava).

Tuhau Malaysia’s states of Sabah and Sarawak in Borneo are blessed with a bounty of produce from their fertile lands. These include crops cultivated for centuries by indigenous tribes such as the Kadazan-Dusun people, who have a condiment called tuhau that’s based on wild ginger, often pickled with salt and vinegar. Evoking nuances of ginger and lemongrass, it has a stringent fragrance and is not commonly

Bedazzled!

Demand for coloured gemstones has never been higher and neither have prices. As Southeast Asia continues to produce some of the world’s finest stones, it’s fast becoming a lucrative destination for professional gemologists and a place for hobbyists to learn the ropes. Words Sharon Crowther | Photography SooPhye

“If it doesn't sparkle, I'm not interested,” says gemologist and jeweller Lucy Walker with a cheeky glint in her eye. The British expat is talking gemstones with me from her studio in the affluent neighbourhood of Bangsar in Kuala Lumpur, and it's crystal clear that this is her favourite topic of conversation. “Diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires are obviously the big four of precious stones,” she explains, “and they're found in abundance across Asia. But there are others which are just as beautiful like spinel and watermelon tourmaline,

March 2018_Explore_Gemology05.indd 52

which is my personal favourite. They're not as well known but the colours are incredible and they make stunning pieces of jewellery.” Walker settled in Kuala Lumpur three years ago, having lived in Australia, New York and the Philippines; Manila is where she first began her education in gemology a decade ago. In November 2017 she made two major commitments to Malaysia by marrying a local and opening a jewellery design studio and academy in Bangsar. From here, she creates

commissioned pieces for clients, and this year, she's rolling out a curriculum of courses in gemology, aimed at arming those with ambitions of buying gemstones on their travels with the knowledge to make sound purchases. “I can't teach gemology in one course; it's something that takes years of study, but I can teach people how to make more informed decisions when buying stones here,” she says. “There's understanding the basics of the four-Cs: carat weight, clarity, cut and colour, but then there's also understanding where to be flexible on these to get the best out of your budget.” “With stones like rubies, sapphires and emeralds, there are preferred market colours. This is fantastic for buyers on a budget because you can get cheaper stones, for example, by looking at rubies, which have an orange tone, or sapphires that are more greenish-blue than

5 6 brilliant-blue. They are just as beautiful. You can also look at different cuts. There are lots of ways to make your money go further.” Walker has been buying stones overseas on behalf of clients for years and believes looking like a pro will stand you in good stead to negotiate the best price for your bounty. “There's a lot to be said for simply being able to handle basic tools like a loupe and tweezers, using the right language and asking smart questions. You'll look less of a novice in front of a seller,” she explains. Walker's courses will also teach students the basics of spotting real stones from fake ones. “If the colour is bright and it's cheap, it's probably not real, and if the proportions of the stone are absolutely perfect, it's also unlikely to be real because gemstones are cut to retain as much weight as possible, not to be in perfect proportion.” she says. “Common imposters to look out for are glass, which you can tell because it's softer, therefore nowhere near as sparkly as a precious stone, and cubic zirconia, which actually sparkles too much. When you know what you're looking for, it's easy to spot those fakes. Glass also warms quicker against skin than a gemstone will, which is a good test.” But, she says, the harder nuances to detect come in the form of treated or synthetic stones. “Treated stones are big business in this part of the world, especially in places like Bangkok where they're very good at it. Treating stones can make them more durable, brighter in colour, and it can make a less-than-perfect stone look better, by filling imperfections with glass or resin, in order to sell it at a higher price,” she

March 2018_Explore_Gemology05.indd 54

explains. “The problem is that, while it looks perfect, the stone is technically worthless and you can spot that by learning how to see the lustre difference between the surfaces.” That said, Walker is adamant that Southeast Asia is one of the best places in the world to explore gemology and buy stones. “There's so much choice in gemstones all over Asia. It's a real playground for people who are interested in the subject or just love a bit of sparkle. Gemstones can have great stories behind them, memories from trips taken, and that's a really special thing to turn into a piece of jewellery,” she says. “But it's worth understanding the basics before you go shopping.” “Always haggle,” she advises. “But before you do, ask around. If you want an amethyst for example, go somewhere like Bangkok, where you'll find hundreds of them. Then look for the kind of stones you like, the shape and colour and size, and ask the price. If you ask enough people, you'll soon get a realistic idea of what you're going to have to pay for that sort of stone. Then try and get 20 percent off.” “Do your research to find out the best place to buy stones before you arrive,” she continues. “Never go anywhere with a tuk-tuk driver; nine times out of ten it won't be reputable or fairly priced.” But most importantly, says Walker, make sure you have fun. “One of the best things you can do is set yourself a budget of USD100 (RM390) and take yourself on a treasure hunt. Have fun with it, shop around, haggle and buy a few stones you love the look of,” she says. “Then, bring them home and take them to a gemologist

or a jeweller and see if they're real. If they are, maybe you've got an eye for it. If they're not, the USD100 (RM390) was still money well spent because you'll have learned a lot, you enjoyed it and you got something shiny out of it.” ■

Walker's Gemology for Travellers class will run regularly throughout 2018 alongside her contemporary jewellery design courses. She also takes commissions for pieces and will be launching her own line of jewellery later in 2018.

Bigger budgets could look for Padparadscha sapphires, a salmon pink show-stopper. • Rubies & Sapphires from Nepal Some of the world's finest rubies and sapphires can be found in the Himalayan mountain range. Ruby and sapphire are different varieties of the species corundum, so it's not surprising that they often form in the same location. Ruby is coloured red because of traces of the element chromium, while blue sapphire is coloured by traces of iron and titanium.

Up In The

Highlands

Deep in the jungles of Bario in Sarawak, Volvo Trucks’ Seasonal Gift programme helps to fund facilities for the local Kelabit community to preserve its way of life. Words Eris Choo | Photography Volvo Malaysia

Peering out the window as the 19-seater MASWings-operated Twin Otter plane makes its descent, visitors are greeted by a stunning sight of undulating hills and lush tropical greenery, dotted with paddy fields and pineapple farms.

headman Laju Balang @ Aren Lemulun. “There are six to seven longhouse fires every year in Sarawak. The fear of losing our longhouse to a fire is very real,” he says, adding that it isn’t just the material possessions that would be lost, but the memories of their Kelabit forefathers.

This is Bario, a remote town located high up in the Kelabit Highlands of Malaysia’s eastern Sarawak state in Borneo.

Residents have reasons to worry. The longhouse in neighbouring Ulung Palang village was razed in two fires, and in 2017, the local primary school, Sekolah Kebangsaan Bario, was burnt down. Without a proper fire-fighting system, the fires spread quickly and the buildings were destroyed.

Known as the Land of a Hundred Handshakes, reflecting the warmth and hospitality of its people, Bario is home to the Kelabit community, one of the smallest indigenous groups in Sarawak, who have lived in the area for 4,000 years. Although they number an estimated 6,000, there are just over 1,000 people left in Bario and its surroundings, as many have migrated to cities in search of better education and job opportunities. The main source of income here comes from agriculture, with Bario rice, pineapple and salt products highly sought after. In recent years, ecotourism has attracted researchers and tourists from as far as the U.K., Australia and New Zealand, who come to experience the friendly hospitality, the laidback village vibe, and the amazing biodiversity of the rainforest. However, Bario’s remote location means that help in case of emergencies is at least 11 hours away by four-wheel drive through rugged logging trails and river crossings, or via a 50-minute flight on a small plane that flies in twice daily from the nearest city, Miri. The most pressing worry for the residents of Bario Asal Lembaa, the largest village in Bario, is fire and destruction of their traditional wooden longhouse – the oldest of its kind in the area and home to about 23 families. “Our longhouse is more than just a home. It is a living piece of history,” says Bario Asal Lembaa

March 2018_Explore_Volvo Kelabit02.indd 56

Realising the importance of preserving the longhouse, an irreplaceable piece of heritage, as well as to help elevate the living standards of the community, Volvo Trucks reached out to the people of Bario as part of its Seasonal Gift programme, a global corporate social responsibility effort to support local societal causes. Malaysia was one of 14 countries chosen to receive RM500,000 (USD127,000) in funding last year. “We picked Bario out of numerous options after one of our staff, our sales VP Alex Yong who paid this beautiful place a visit, told us stories about it and how our Seasonal Gift would help the people here,” says Volvo Malaysia Managing Director Mats Nilsson. “Our objective is to help sustain the local culture, grow tourism potential as well as maintain the history of the communities in and around Bario, whilst allowing them to preserve a part of the environment here,” he says, adding that this is in line with the company’s core values of quality, safety and environmental care.

2 3

The initiative covers two areas, the first being the construction of a fire-fighting system for the longhouse. Comprising a large-capacity water tank and eight strategically placed hose reels, the system can be deployed quickly in case of a fire.

Built in the traditional style with a tawa (community hall), living areas and an interconnected kitchen, the longhouse dates back to 1958 and is a living historical monument and a big tourist draw. “To prevent loss of lives as well as loss of history, we agreed that a firefighting system was crucial for its preservation for generations to come,” says Nilsson.

4

The second component of the Seasonal Gift programme is the construction of five “ecoshelters” along the Bario ancestral trail, which leads to Mount Murud, the highest mountain in Sarawak, as well as the twin-peaked limestone formation called Batu Lawi, a sacred site for communities such as the Kelabit and Penan, who live within the highlands. Covering a distance of 25 kilometres across hilly terrain and thick, virgin rainforest, the trail is a difficult one that takes six days to traverse. However, hikers will be rewarded with encounters with diverse Bornean flora and fauna, including spider Rafflesia, helmeted hornbills, gibbons, sun bears, and if one is

March 2018_Explore_Volvo Kelabit02.indd 57

The eco-shelters, each of which are spaced five kilometres apart, are meant to act as resting spots for locals and hikers alike, and to make the trail more attractive to amateurs. This would in turn draw more tourists to Bario and generate income for the locals. The shelters are equipped with working toilets via a sustainable rainwater harvesting system and are elevated high above ground for safety. The pillars are constructed of wood from the Belian tree (Bornean ironwood), while the body of the shelters are made from Jati (teak). Building them was a monumental task, done entirely by the local Kelabit and Penan people. Because the area is a gazetted national park, no trees can be felled, and porters had to carry a whopping 30 kilogrammes of building materials such as wood planks and logs through the hilly and sometimes treacherous jungle terrain, in order to reach the building site. A total of seven villages within Bario participated in the effort.

incredibly lucky, the elusive bay cat, which is only found in the jungles of Borneo.

Both components of the Seasonal Gift project were completed within six months. For headman Laju, Volvo’s programme has provided the local community with tools to empower itself and which will have a profound impact for generations to come. “We enjoy modern amenities now but we maintain a traditional way of life. It isn’t easy but Bario holds a special place in our hearts, and it is our responsibility to pass this on, whilst sustaining development all around. “In the last few years, we’ve seen the impact of tourism on our lives. The homestays and the guides have an income. We also get to sell our products such as salt and pineapple,” he points out. The long -term goal, Laju explains, would be to establish Bario as a world-class hub for agro-biodiversity, and to obtain UNESCO World Heritage status. Undeniably one of the most beautiful rural locations in Malaysia, Bario is indeed deserving of conservation and protection, lest this gem of a place and the way of life of its people disappear forever. ■

Chef Nurilkarim Razha, who officiates in the kitchens of Jawi House, grew up very aware of his dual Jawi heritage, with his mother, a fifth-generation Malaysian whose family came from Lahore in modern Pakistan, and his father, originally from Malaysia’s northern Kedah state, both respected academics. Of course, that translated into the food he grew up with. “With my mum's background being Peranakan and Pakistani, we grew up eating chapattis and curries,” he recalls. He also remembers the treats that she would bring back from her frequent international trips that opened his eyes to a world of culinary possibilities. And his

“Growing up, the place that had the most vibrancy and activity was the kitchen,” he recalls. “I would try to emulate what my mum was doing.” Despite his interest in cooking from a very young age, his parents didn't see restaurant work as a viable option and insisted that young Nuril enrol in pre-law. It didn't take long for him to see that this was not the path he was destined for, but it took longer for his parents to warm to his chosen career. After taking a degree in events management, he trained at Penang's legendary E&O Hotel, before moving to Kuala Lumpur to work at French restaurant Cilantro under Japanese chef Takashi Kimura. In 2013, his mother, the anthropologist Wazir Jahan Karim, who had just published the book Feasts of Penang: Muslim Culinary Heritage, opened the Jawi House Café Gallery as a showcase for Jawi culture, including food. he credits his mother particularly for forming his curiosity and taste for everything from Sunday roasts to foraged food eaten by indigenous Orang Asli communities, “working with my mother was something I never expected, I never planned on.” He considers his words. “It is very much of a challenge to work with your mum,” he confides, but he also sees it as a responsibility. “You need to carry on your family heritage in a way.” A chef might cook French or Japanese cuisine without being French or Japanese, but “it is very important for a chef to understand what their heritage is and (what) you are connected to.” Are there disadvantages? “My mum has a very high standard in cooking. She comes to check and tells me all the time what I've done wrong. But that's good because chefs can be very arrogant, right?” he grins.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 60 | March 2018

It was also his mum who encouraged him to join the R.AGE's Food Fight competition to find Malaysia's next food celebrity. He wowed the judges and won not only a cash prize but the chance to host the web programme, The Local Kitchen, where he explores food cultures and unusual ingredients all around Malaysia. If it were up to him, he'd do another season about the food of Borneo in Sabah and Sarawak. “There are so many things to highlight. I would love to do more episodes,” he muses. So, what is next for the young chef who turns 29 this year? “We want to expand the business in Penang or KL as there’s no real Jawi Peranakan restaurant in KL.” He is writing a couple of recipe books due out this year “[if] I can be disciplined enough to finish up my book-writing, while my mum is still free to assist me.” “Being a millennial, I have a lot of things I want to achieve before I turn 30.” He reels off his wish list. “Apprentice in a kitchen outside of Malaysia. I'm quite an avid scuba diver, so definitely diving in more places. I think it’d be quite interesting to go to India, or Kashmir or Pakistan to see my origins.” His passion for sharing culinary traditions and local ingredients that are part of his heritage are reflected in dishes like his nasi lemuni, rice cooked with the flowers and leaves of the chaste tree found in northern Malaysia. The dish was “traditionally consumed by ladies in confinement and is supposed to revitalise your body with nutrients,” he explains. The spices would “warm up the body and help expel wind” but Nuril considers them to be optional and doesn't usually add them at the restaurant. The butterfly pea flowers are not traditional in nasi lemuni but were suggested to Nuril by his mother to brighten up an otherwise dullcoloured dish. “In Malay, we say taat setia (a reminder to be loving and obedient). You have to listen to your mum!” he says with a smile. ■

Elegance Well known for its superb craftsmanship and sophisticated designs, Noritake has been a trusted brand in the making of high quality tableware for over 100 years, be it the finest in white porcelain ware, bone china, glassware or cutlery. Striving to enhance everyday living, it takes pride of place in homes, at luxury hotels and restaurants, as well as in airlines’ in-flight services around the world. Noritake tableware was used in both First Class and Business Class of Malaysia Airlines flights in the 1970s, the first being the Golden Club design. Its colourful look drew inspiration from the wau bulan, a Malaysian national symbol, which is also the corporate logo of the airline, as well as Malaysia’s traditional batik pattern. A decade later, the Bunga Raya design followed, serving passengers in Malaysia Airlines’ First Class cabins. Inspired by the Malaysian national flower, the hibiscus, the tableware featured delicately painted motifs on each piece. Now, First Class and Business Class travellers onboard the airline’s new A350 will once again be privy to Noritake’s exquisite creations – the Crestwood Platinum series. Featuring a wide, etched platinum band, the series is one of the brand’s most popular patterns, renowned for its look of elegant simplicity. The sophisticated design is composed of a combination of three motifs: the Japanese

The entire design is made classier by a technique known as the Platinum Emboss, which enables Noritake to represent three-dimensional and two-tone effects. Regatta Lepa

March 2018_Warisan04.indd 63

For most of the year, Semporna is a fishing village known as a gateway to stunning dive sites. It happens to sit in the Coral Triangle, a marine area in the western Pacific Ocean encompassing six countries, one of them Malaysia, home to a staggering number of corals. Come April, this sleepy coastal town in Sabah state turns into carnival city when Regatta Lepa fever takes hold, drawing thousands of visitors from all over the world. Regatta Lepa is a festival that honours the traditional art of making beautiful boats or lepa used for generations by the Bajau, a nomadic community of sea gypsies that inhabit Semporna’s coast. Legendary for their seafaring skills and boatmaking craftsmanship, the Bajau build their boats from solid ubar suluk (Red Saraya wood). According to Bajau lore, no lepa has ever sunk, a feat credited to the lepa’s distinctive design that is shaped to mimic the figure of a fish. This form supposedly lends the boat a smooth glide when it rolls with the waves.

From marriage ceremonies to earning a livelihood through fishing, the Bajau spend most of their lives on the lepa; for some, the only time that their bodies spend any extended time on land is when they are buried after death. Typically decorated with unique carvings and bearing colourful sails and triangular pennants, their boats are admired for utility as well as beauty; hence, the birth of the Regatta Lepa was to pay homage to the Bajau legacy. Introduced in 1994, Regatta Lepa has grown into an official state festival and an important agenda in the national tourism calendar. Spread over three days, the Regatta Lepa is packed with all kinds of activities, from rowing and sailing competitions to canoe contests, duck catching, fireworks displays and tug-of-wars. The first day is a time for feasting and shopping, with people from the area and surrounding towns and villages thronging the streets and stalls. Day Two is when the real action takes place. The crowds head out to the sapphire waters of

the bay, where a flotilla of lepa adorned with colourful umbrellas, flags, streamers and buntings are lined along the waterfront. These lepa fly brightly coloured sails known as sambulayang (a large flag fitted on the mast) and tipas (small triangular flags), trying to stand out from the crowd. Each lepa represents different families and villages from the region. The festival is one of the few occasions where people can view so many masterpieces of Bajau master craftsmen gathered in one place. There can be as many as 50 lepa boats vying for the title of most beautiful boat.

Points are awarded based on the quality of decorations, the intricacies of the carvings and designs, as well as the traditional performances on board. On each lepa, graceful dancers in traditional costumes can be seen performing the igal dance of the Bajau, accompanied by gamelan music played by a live band. Believed to be a corruption of the word ‘eagle’, igal is so named because of the smooth, eagle-like movements that dancers make and perform at weddings, ceremonies and other Bajau social events. Amid raucous cheering and high-spirited revelry, the vessels sail around the bay, giving tourists and locals a real feast for the eyes.

A way to experience a unique ethnic tradition that has been practised for centuries, the Regatta Lepa is a great time to visit this picturesque part of Sabah. And once you are through with the festivities, you can always head out for some snorkelling or diving.

MALAYSIAN ICON | Tan Sri Dato’ Lim Phaik Gan

Woman Of Substance Tan Sri Dato’ Lim Phaik Gan was a formidable lawyer and diplomat known for championing the rights of the underprivileged. Hers was a long life of extraordinary work and achievements. Words Siva Sithraputhran | Photography courtesy of Merdeka Award Trust

“I fight if there is a need. I take the case sometimes when no one else will,” Lim Phaik Gan, widely known as PG Lim, told an Associated Press reporter in a candid interview in July 1971. By that time, Lim was heading to New York to take on the role of Malaysia's deputy permanent representative to the UN, having already cemented a reputation as a bold trial lawyer and champion for workers' rights.

highest honours, of which she was a recipient in 2009 for her outstanding contributions to the empowerment of women in Malaysia.

She was also later Malaysia's ambassador to Yugoslavia, Austria and the European Economic Community.

“We were brought up to be sympathetic to the poor and downtrodden. We grew up in an atmosphere where privileges brought with them responsibilities,” she said. Her mother too was involved in social work.

She returned to Malaysia in 1980 to practise law and became the head of the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre of Arbitration in 1982 until her retirement in 2001. Lim was also a patron of the arts and was a keen collector. Her autobiography Kaleidoscope: The Autobiography of PG Lim was published in 2012.

Born in London in 1915 and educated at Cambridge, Lim was called to the English Bar in 1948 and the Malayan Bar in 1954. From the outset, it became clear that she would pursue a path of social justice. She was central in highlighting the double standards used by the colonial British system to sentence to death a young ethnic Chinese woman, charged with being a courier for communist insurgents. The woman, Lee Meng, eventually escaped the death penalty through a royal pardon.

Lim was educated at home and at the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus in Penang, among the earliest English schools for girls in East Asia. She went on to Girton College, Cambridge to read Law and History. She then returned to Malaya for a period before heading out to the U.K. again to sit for the Bar examinations. She became politically active during that time, editing the journal of the pro-independence movement, Malayan Forum. On her return to Malaya as it was called then, Lim embarked on a successful career in law.

The notoriety of the case and Lim's efforts helped solidify the campaign for jury-led trials, which came into force in 1957 as Malaya broke away from colonial rule.

After the race riots of 13 May 1969, Lim was one of two women representatives in the National Consultative Council appointed to draw up a national reconciliation programme.

In the late 1950s, Lim advised and represented workers’ unions, shining a light on the dire working conditions of plantation and railway workers. She was crucial in their fight for fairer wages and better treatment. She was also instrumental in getting daily-wage workers in the railways recognition as public servants, entitling them to government pensions.

Soon after, her diplomatic career began as Malaysia’s ambassador to the United Nations.

Lim passed away in 2013, aged 97. Throughout her life, she fought for social justice, especially for the rights of women, for which she will forever be an inspiration. ■

Privilege Comes With Great Responsibility Lim was born into privilege, but her lessons on social justice came early. “My father was a legislative councillor for Penang in 1934, and there were a lot of immigrant Chinese children and children of Indian labourers without education. My father requested free education for these children, but the British said they will not provide that. So, my father walked out of the council. I suppose I came from a background that was a little anti-colonial,” she said in an article published on the website of Merdeka Award, the country's

73 News & Updates

Girl Power Female pilots are rare, but the few who venture into the male-dominated civil aviation industry shine like diamonds in the rough. Meet the first of Malaysia Airlines’ female cadet pilots: (from left) Wang Wen Chien, Waie Hidayah Rasidin and Foo Hooi Wen Turn to the next page to read their story.

Following in the footsteps of her father, who is also a pilot, Waie Hidayah Rasidin joined Malaysia Airlines as a cadet pilot in December last year. “It has been an exciting ride so far, and everyone in the company is friendly and welcoming,” she says, thanking her family for their words of encouragement in times of challenges. The Sabah-born lass, who enjoys painting, riding and travelling, shares that dedication and passion are key to becoming a good pilot. As to why she chose to fly with Malaysia Airlines, Waie says that it is an honour to be part of the national carrier. “The company also offers many opportunities to advance my career should I wish to venture into other aviation-related professions,” she adds.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 74 | March 2018

Another female pilot who was inspired by her father is Foo Hooi Wen, who joined as a Malaysia Airlines cadet pilot in October 2017. “When I was young, my father spoke to me often about his dream to become a pilot,

March 2018_MAB News03.indd 74

which never materialised,” she explains. Over time, she fell in love with flying, and her father’s dream became her own. For Foo, the biggest challenge that comes with the role is the ability to handle stress and pressure, which she alleviates by leading an active lifestyle. Like Waie, Foo is proud to be flying for Malaysia Airlines, citing its rich history as well as its status as the pride and joy of the nation. “I’m proud to say that I’m not just a pilot, but also one of the few female pilots in this company,” she proclaims. Wang Wen Chien’s first brush with flying was in secondary school, when she attended a one-day pilot course to fly a Cessna-152. The experience was so unforgettable, it inspired her to become a pilot. She went on to Sydney, Australia to further her studies in aviation before returning to Malaysia in 2014 and joining Malaysia Airlines as a cadet pilot. As the eldest among her siblings who

are still in school, Wang strives to be a good example to them. “Although good grades in Math and Physics are part of the qualifications needed before joining flying school, more importantly, one has to be alert and ready at all times. Experience comes through training and daily flights,” she elaborates. In her spare time, Wang enjoys bowling, basketball and swimming as well as solving Sudoku puzzles. Their advice for aspiring young women who wish to become airline pilots is to never let anything or anyone hold them back from pursuing their dreams. “There should not be barriers for women who wish to join. With proper motivation and support, women, too, can make it in the industry,” says Foo. Wang believes that communities and attitudes have changed over the years. “Women are now seen as capable of taking up challenges and making important decisions. We are more than capable of flying and landing aircraft safely,” she adds.

Maiden A350 Flight A sense of excitement and pride was in the air as Malaysia Airlines made its first A350 run from Kuala Lumpur to London and back in January. To celebrate the occasion, Chief Executive Officer Izham Ismail joined staff and members of the cabin crew to hand out cupcakes and goodie bags to U.K.-bound passengers at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Meanwhile in London, an exclusive reception was held at Heathrow’s Terminal 4, attended by key stakeholders, including representatives from Khazanah Nasional, Malaysian High Commission, Malaysia Tourism Board, Airbus, trade partners, media as well as Liverpool Football Club Legends Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler. Specially designed for long-haul routes, the A350 aircraft is configured in a three-class layout with four new First-Class seats, 31 Business Class seats, and 251 Economy Class seats. The aircraft feature added legroom, extra wide cabins and intelligent mood lighting, in addition to onboard Wi-Fi and upgraded in-flight entertainment. The A350s will replace the A380s serving the London route by this month. Malaysia Airlines operates twice-daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and London.

Music In The Sky Passengers onboard a recent Malaysia Airlines A350 flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah were pleasantly surprised when they were serenaded by homegrown band, SaraSara Akustika. Band members Arif (vocals), Fahir (guitar) and Ila (violin) performed several songs, including Fly Me To The Moon by Frank Sinatra and Perfect by Ed Sheeran. Formed in 2014, the band is a regular on television programmes and has collaborated with popular local artistes, such as Shila Amzah, Dato’ A Rahman Hassan and Dato’ Sri Siti Nurhaliza.

Malaysia Airlines was once again part of Hasanah Bersama Rakyat, a community outreach programme under Khazanah Nasional Berhad, a government investment fund, to promote unity and patriotism. Previously held in Kuala Lumpur and Johor, the event made its way to Kuching, Sarawak, attracting an impressive turnout of 3,500 visitors. Over 40 booths operated by non-governmental organisations, government departments, government-linked companies and other agencies were set up to offer information and services on healthcare, education, employment and environmental conservation during the event. There were also fun activities such as Zumba and Poco Poco dance sessions.

Best Of The Best Congratulations to the winners of the Going Places Readers’ Choice Awards 2017, the third of our annual awards to honour the best brands for providing the highest level of service to their customers. The winners from 10 categories were chosen based on the highest number of votes received. More than 3,500 votes were cast during an online voting campaign from July to December 2017. Each winner will receive a customised Noritake Masters Collection Dinner Plate. THE WINNERS

Innovative Offerings Malaysia Airlines and mobile telecommunications provider Celcom Axiata Berhad have plans to collaborate on a strategic partnership to benefit their respective customers across multiple areas. Some of these will include easier ways to earn and spend Enrich miles, flight discounts for Celcom users, as well as attractive roaming plans. Commenting on the agreement, Chief Executive Officer Izham Ismail said the partnership will help “people stay connected, whether through travel or their mobile phone”. It will enable Enrich members to reach rewards more quickly, by providing new and innovative ways for them to earn and spend miles, he added.

Safety + service info

Cabin Luggage handling Passenger and crew safety onboard our flights is our highest priority. In compliance with the airline’s policy and in observing Occupational, Safety and Health Regulations requirements, cabin crew are no longer required to stow passengers’ hand luggages into the overhead stowage compartment. This is to minimise occupational hazard and ergonomic risks faced by cabin crew in the aircraft. Cabin crew on duty will, however, assist passengers travelling with infants, young passengers travelling alone, the elderly, and passengers with reduced mobility. Passengers who are fit and in good health must carry, stow and secure their own hand luggages on board. Hand luggage exceeding the 7kg weight limit is required to be checked in before boarding.

Portable Electronic Devices (PED) For safety reasons and in line with the Department of Civil Aviation guidelines, mobile phones and all PEDs must be switched off once aircraft doors are closed. Whilst cruising, devices placed in flight mode may be used. The devices must again be switched off during the approach for landing until the aircraft is parked at the terminal building. Devices transmitting strong signals must remain switched off throughout the flight, until disembarkation. The Captain may prohibit the use of devices that can interfere with the aircraft’s system.

Lithium batteries Lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries for portable electronic devices (PEDs), including medical devices must not exceed 2g for lithium metal batteries and 100Wh for lithium ion batteries. All spare batteries, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for PEDs must be carried in passengers’ carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. For PEDs containing non-spillable batteries, they must be 12V or less or 100Wh or less. A maximum of two spare batteries may be carried. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.

Electronic cigarettes Electronic cigarettes must be carried on one’s person or in carry-on baggage only. Recharging of the device in-flight is not permitted.

Zero tolerance of abuse We value courteousness. Any form of threat, verbal abuse or violence towards our staff will be taken seriously. We are committed to supporting anyone who has been the victim of an assault.

March 2018_MH Safety Guide.indd 79

Our cabin crew reserve the right to decline serving and selling alcohol to any passenger who appears intoxicated. Consumption of personal alcoholic drinks is prohibited.

FRESH AND FROZEN SEAFOOD Fresh and frozen seafood are strictly not permitted in check-in baggage. They may be accepted in cabin baggage, subject to the destination’s quarantine regulations, but they must be properly packed and meet the cabin baggage weight and size requirements. A maximum of 2.5 kg of dry ice per passenger is permissible if dry ice is used to carry these items. We reserve the right to refuse carriage if the items are not properly packed.

Set in the early 1990s, the series follows nine-year-old child prodigy Sheldon Cooper as he attends high school in the fictional town of Medford, Texas. While academically gifted, Sheldon lacks all forms of social cues, leading to embarrassing moments. His family and friends try to help him deal with his unique intellectual capabilities and social challenges.

This anthology series chronicles the lives and the rivalry between Hollywood actresses Bette Davis and Joan Crawford during and after the production of their 1962 film What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?. After their brief comeback, the two women are forced to deal with ageism and misogyny while struggling to hang on to success and fame.

Aubrey Suwito & Friends with The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra is playing onboard this month. We speak to the Malaysian songwriter, producer and pianist about his journey so far.

How did you get your start in music?

goingplacesmagazine.com | 92 | March 2018

My start in music came about while I was studying for my A-Levels. A professional musician-cum-studioowner spotted me in a school’s talent-time show (where I was part of the backing band) and gave me an open invitation to sit in and observe the ‘goings-on’ of his recording studio. One thing led to another and as soon as I completed my A-levels, I landed a job at that studio along with a stint as a resident musician at the Kuala Lumpur Hilton.

a show at their prestigious venue. This was a once-in-a-year slot that had been earmarked for Malaysia’s top local artists, and I was the very first non-artist to be invited to do my own show. I had done a few ‘Aubrey Suwito and Friends’ before, but to be invited to perform with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra was simply a surreal proposition. Such an honour!

You’ve been in the industry for more than three decades. What keeps you going?

Thankfully, there have been so many! The ones that come to mind are playing the ‘David Foster & Friends’ show in front of a home crowd in Malaysia; being the Music Director to Kris Dayanti’s ‘Romansa’ concerts; going on the nationwide ‘Fantasia Tour’ with Dato’ Seri Siti Nurhaliza; winning 19 AIM (Malaysian Music Industry) awards; and of course, my 'Aubrey Suwito and Friends Concert' with the MPO!

I think I’ve lasted this long because I am constantly intrigued by the frequent changes in the music industry, which I try my best to keep abreast of to keep myself relevant. There’s a saying in the music industry that you are only as good as your last ‘product’, be it a live concert or a song production. For every new project I undertake, there’s always me thinking, “how can I do this differently, how can I do this better?” Tell us about the album, Aubrey Suwito & Friends With The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. How did it come about?

Quite out of the blue, I received a call from someone from the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas management team and was offered to headline

What’s next for Aubrey Suwito?

Curate and perform more concerts, and hopefully write more good songs while I’m at it. I’m in the midst of scoring a movie (one in my bucket list), which is due out in the later part of the year. I enjoy this new avenue of expressing myself, so I hope to do more film-scoring in the future. Somewhere in between, I also hope to find the time to pursue my Graduate degree.

War & Leisure - Miguel While Miguel’s fourth LP may lack the obvious identity that has marked his previous albums, it is not necessarily a bad thing. By comparison, this is a compelling collection of pop-tastic R&B tracks with mellow tempos and a nice spotlight on the electric guitar to make a fun soundtrack. War & Leisure debuted at number nine on the Billboard 200.
