from the Commander-in-Chief
Dear Guests, It is my pleasure to welcome you onboard. May marks my eighth month as the Group CEO of Malaysia Airlines. It has certainly been exciting times, with never a dull moment. Over the last few months, we have introduced several new initiatives and rejuvenated many of our products. We also received our latest flagship product, the Airbus 350 with modern and improved offerings that include, for the first time, Wi-Fi onboard a Malaysian carrier. It is a great new product with better-quality food and amenities. We have been adding more frequencies to Tokyo and will be adding more capacity during the peak periods and soon the A350s will be introduced onto our Japan routes. We also launched the newly refurbished lounges at KLIA.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 6 | May 2018
Technology continues to be our main driver. We have invested heavily here to introduce several innovative solutions such as a more agile website and new mobile applications. All these improvements and innovations were set out with only one objective in mind, and that is to enhance the overall experience of our guests. Several more initiatives are in the pipeline, which we will progressively roll out. But in all of this, what separates us from the other airlines? It is our promise of Malaysian Hospitality. It begins with us and is the guiding principle behind our new brand campaign. I am excited about this new campaign which revisits the essence of Malaysia Airlines as the national carrier of the country. Malaysian Hospitality has long been synonymous with the airline but what we are doing now is re-emphasising to the world that Malaysian Hospitality begins with us.
Izham Ismail
Group Chief Executive Officer Malaysia Airlines Berhad
As the national carrier, we represent the warmth, humility and hospitality that Malaysia is well-known for. Our diversity, heritage and culture will be our reference points and the roots of our brand promise and it will be underlined with modernity – just like the country – straddling the past with the promise of the future. Malaysian Hospitality will encompass all aspects of the guest experience for Malaysian Hospitality truly begins with us. Have a wonderful flight. ■

EDITOR’S NOTE Everyone loves a wedding and when that wedding is set to become one of the most watched events of 2018, we can’t help but join in the celebrations. Welcome to our first British-themed issue! His Royal Highness Prince Harry will marry his sweetheart, American actress Meghan Markle, in a ceremony expected to be watched by millions of people around the world on 19 May. The royal couple will marry at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, promising a wedding centred on fun, joy and a chance to celebrate with the public – traits that reflect their characters.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 8 | May 2018
Julie Goh Editor
So, in conjunction with their special day, we have put together a special issue focusing on Great Britain, from destination articles to top London establishments for classic British food. In our special wedding preview on pages 48-51, we have rounded up everything we know about the wedding (up to the time of printing, that is!), from the venue to the bridal bouquet to the person that is Meghan Markle. To top it off, we even asked our Malaysian fashion designers to imagine the bridal gown they would design for Meghan and the sketches are simply stunning! If you are a die-hard royal family fan and are travelling to Windsor to catch a glimpse of the bride and groom on their wedding day, take our travel guide on pages 29-31 with you and discover what else there is to see in the twin towns of Windsor and Eton. And if you are truly obsessed, let’s see if you have outdone Margaret Tyler, a dedicated royalist who has filled her London home with GBP40,000 (RM220,000) worth of royal family mementos. To learn about the rich and varied tapestry of the British monarchy, turn to pages 64-68 for our list of must-visit locations to walk in the footsteps of the royal family.
In other travel stories, Kam Raslan is hoping to tempt you away from London, by going beyond the capital city to the picturesque English countryside. The road trip he has planned will take you from London to Brighton, driving past beautiful rolling hills and rugged moorland to the towns of Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells, and ending at the seaside town of Brighton. If you’re interested in botany, read our feature on the Temperate House in Kew Gardens, London’s world-leading botanic gardens, only 30 minutes by train from central London. The Victorian glasshouse reopens this month after a five-year restoration. A visit to London is never complete without experiencing one of its theatre productions, and in his article, writer James Luxford has outlined what’s on offer and shared tips for getting the most out of your visit. Lastly, I had the pleasure of interviewing Britain’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, Her Excellency Vicki Treadell, for our special issue. She has a shared connection with us, Malaysians. Born in Ipoh, Perak, she has returned, not once but twice, as a diplomat to Malaysia. More than 2,600 local schoolchildren, community champions and charity workers have been invited to watch the wedding from inside the walls of Windsor Castle. Other well-wishers on location will also have the opportunity to see the royal couple on their carriage ride through Windsor. But millions of others like me around the world will have to settle for the television to watch the highly anticipated event. See you in June. ■

Letter Of The Month
Each month, Going Places will select a Letter Of The Month and the winner will receive a gift. I was raised by my late grandmother who lived through the Second World War. When I was growing up, my grandmother would recount the heartbreaking stories and tear-jerking encounters she experienced. Even though my grandmother had always been passionate about education, as a girl in the 1930s, she was forced to drop out of school at the age of nine to work and support her family. Going through my early 20s and after learning more about education and championing education equality, particularly from Australia’s first female Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, I have been passionate about promoting education equality whenever and wherever I have the capacity. As I read this month’s Malaysian Icon section, I was delighted to read about the late Tan Sri P.G. Lim, a remarkable woman in our nation’s history, who dedicated her life to championing the rights of the underprivileged. I realised how significant and important it is for us to celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 March each year. There are still many girls all across the world who do not have access to education. They could be stripped of education because of various reasons, ranging from financial instability to geographical constraints and political influence. While International Women’s Day helps to raise awareness about women’s rights, we should also acknowledge that the work to champion women’s access to education, health and other basic human rights goes beyond 8 March. Resonating with this year’s theme to #PushForProgress, there is no better time to feature this article on the remarkable Malaysian icon, and to remind us all there is more work to be done. We owe all our daughters a better and fairer tomorrow. LEON HA, Perth, Australia
May 2018_EditorNote+MailRoom.indd 8
It was my first travel to Malaysia on 5 March from Manila and I am very happy that my very first engagement with the country is through Going Places. I was fascinated by how your Editor Julie Goh narrated the origin of the campaign, “A Diamond is Forever”. I was bedazzled by Sharon Crowther’s view that Southeast Asia is one the best places to buy dazzling gems and that includes our very own San Juan in the Philippines as the main source of the famous pearls. The article reminded me of former First Lady Imelda Marcos’ rubies, diamonds, and other gems that have been flashed all over the world. It was truly an engaging flight and I must say that Going Places competed triumphantly with the video and audio entertainment offerings. CAESAR R. VALLEJOS, Quezon City, Philippines

British electronic music giants, the likes of Rudimental, Leftfield and Groove Armada, will perform against a backdrop of the event’s iconic centrepiece – the fire-belching Spider. In the old days, the Tamparuli Bridge in Sabah was built to provide an easier way for villagers to travel across the mighty Tuaran river. It has since become a landmark and passed into folklore, retold through the generations. The Sabah Fest Musical Theatre will bring one of these stories to life, through an immersive musical dubbed Solungkui: Jambatan Tamparuli. The tragic tale tells of a beautiful young Dusun woman who falls in love with a British engineer, only to be betrayed into becoming a human sacrifice to appease the river spirits.

Italian In Langkawi Northern Italian cuisine arrives at The Danna Langkawi courtesy of The Terrace’s head chef Federico Zapperi. Here, he creates a range of Italian dishes that suit the Asian preference for sweet, savoury and balanced flavours, while never straying too far from their Italian roots. One dish that exemplifies this approach is the Beef Carpaccio starter, which is served with powdered truffle oil and ice cream, while the Braised Beef Cheeks is another winner, thanks to the eighthour braise in a full-bodied red wine sauce. There’s no shortage of seafood dishes as well – among them are the Seafood Linguine pasta made with fresh seafood bought fresh from the market, as well as Baked Cod with Saffron Risotto. Before ending the meal, be sure to have Chef Federico’s Cioccolato Intenso – an intense bittersweet dessert comprising chocolate almond sable, almond nougatine, flexi chocolate and raspberry powder.
Appreciate the art of cocktail-making during the Singapore Cocktail Festival, which brings together some of the world’s best bartenders, bar owners and cocktail experts from 4 to 13 May to the island nation. Among the festival’s key attractions is the Festival Village at Empress Lawn, where from 4 to 6 May you can sample cocktails from 30 of Singapore’s best bars, while soaking in an outdoor festival vibe. Throughout the 10-day event, attendees who purchase a Cocktail Passport (SGD15/RM45) will get to enjoy discounts, special cocktails and food pairing menus in participating bars such as Astor Bar, Bar Stories, Nutmeg & Clove, Potato Head Folk and Smoke & Mirrors.

Lounge around and have a cuppa tea at Newens Tea House, which is promoting their Journey Through Tea, a monthly series of themed tea-time sets inspired by tea-time cultures from around the world. This month, the tea house will be serving their Joyous May Afternoon Tea set, which features delicacies such as apple and hazelnut cake, Rainbow Cake, scones with clotted cream, and strawberry-flavoured Maids of Honour Tarts as well as a free-flow of Life and Beauty Tea, a herbal infusion of aloe vera and tropical fruits. June features the Summer Holiday Afternoon Tea, where bright and summery flavours arrive on the tray in the form of mixed berries crêpe, panna cotta and madeleines, served alongside a free-flow of Iced Fruits of Paradise Tea made with mango, pineapple and papaya.
If you’re in Seoul looking for a refined dining experience, be sure to book a seat at the Michelin-starred Soigné. For the spring season, Chef Jun Lee has crafted a menu based on Korean wild plants, or namul, an often-underrated aspect of traditional Korean cuisine. “Many people know bibimbap, but the truth is, all of the vegetable ingredients on top of bibimbap are namul. Our goal in this episode is to re-illuminate the value of namul by stepping away from treating namul merely as materials for side dishes and instead focusing on the unique characteristics of respective ingredients, and to present the direction for our food cultural heritage,” said Jun. Dubbed ‘Breath of the Wild’, the seasonal menu features dishes such as Perilla Leaf and Porcini Mushrooms, Butterbur with Lobster, and Shepherd's Purse Soup with bomdong.

Exhibitions, News+Reviews
A Celebration In Madrid Malaysian artist Yusof Ghani will present his solo exhibition ‘Bendera – Spirit of Celebration’, featuring his Segerak VII series in Madrid this month. The paintings in this series depict Yusof’s characteristic bold abstract strokes converging with an intentional creation of subtle human faces and figures in constant movement and interaction with each other. This energy in movement is accentuated through the use of bright background colours that are present in different manners, at times very clearly defined in the background and at times as part of the figure itself to showcase the mood and emotions being conveyed. Every painting is a conversation, a dance, a celebration, an opportunity to lift the spirit. When: 7-10 May | Where: Galeria BAT Alberto Cornejo, Madrid, Spain

Country Living The English city of Bath is a World Heritage Site, famous for its gorgeous golden-coloured Bath-stone architecture and its Roman baths, which are fed by mineral-rich springs located under the city. But what better way to really get to know a new place than through its art? This month, the Bath Art Fair offers such an experience. It’s a delightfully local occasion, presenting works largely from artists based in Bath and Somerset. There will also be live music, locally made cakes and entertainment for little ones!
National Favourites The National Gallery Singapore is something of an institution; housed in the beautifully restored former city hall and Supreme Court, the venue is home to a vast collection of works produced by Singaporean artists and those from across Southeast Asia. In fact, it’s the world’s largest collection of Singaporean art, and this month, the gallery invites visitors to get to know it better. ‘(Re)collect: The Making of Our Art Collection’ explores the origins of the National Gallery Singapore’s collection, which is continuously evolving. Look out for works by Georgette Chen, Liu Kang and Cheong Soo Pieng and interesting stories of how they came into the Gallery’s possession.

Kids
These Days
goingplacesmagazine.com | 28 | May 2018
One of the great things about getting older is that I can now be dismissive about young people. I can now say things like, “You’ll understand when you get older”, “When I was your age …” and “Get off my lawn, you pesky kids!” And the great thing is that I don’t even have a lawn, but they have to respect me because I am older than them. I mean, what do young people know? Nothing! They might have their fidget spinners and their Nintendos but I lived through Windows ’98 and Y2K. I’ve seen things and now I have the wisdom that comes with experience. I am finally superior to somebody and all I had to do was get older. But something happened recently that has made me realise that young people know something I don’t, and that they might be better than me. There was a terrible tragedy in Florida recently. There was yet another one of those awful American school shootings and 17 people died. But from this tragedy there emerged a group of teenagers who spoke with an eloquence, poise and determination that left me stunned. Seemingly instantaneously these Florida schoolkids coalesced into a movement that has galvanised not only other young people but also adults with their determination and with their language. They speak in complete sentences with wit and with wisdom as they fight to change America’s bizarre gun laws. As one 18-year-old said in a truly powerful speech, “We are going to be the kids you read about in textbooks,” and she’s probably right. I’m not just impressed by these teenagers, I’m also learning from them. Where did they find their eloquence and intelligence? I couldn’t do that when I was their age and I can’t do it now either. I was led to believe, no, I had been promised that young people and the coming generations are, well,
Parents, you should have your children do theatre. Theatre’s lessons and experiences (even the humiliating ones) will fuel them long after they have forgotten all about the periodic table. not that great. But now I’m really scared because they might be very bright indeed. In searching for answers as to why these Florida “kids” are so smart, I discovered that many of them are active members of their school’s theatre department. And suddenly it all made sense. Theatre is not encouraged in Malaysian schools these days, but it really should be. Today’s parents are probably afraid that their children will be dazzled by the bright lights and glamour of the stage and will want to become actors. This is an understandable fear. Most of my closest friends are actors and they’re all very poor. But theatre teaches children lessons they cannot learn anywhere else. It teaches them to face their fears because going onto that stage and putting on a great performance is terrifying. By speaking the words of great playwrights, it helps them to learn about adult concepts and the adult world at an early age. And finally, the sheer effort of putting on a play is not only exhilarating but it requires teamwork, attention to detail and split-second timing. I did theatre when I was at school. I had a great singing voice but I was a really terrible actor, so
I was always pushed to the back of the stage where nobody could see me. But in a production of the musical Oliver! I had to go to the front of the stage and do a ridiculous little dance. Each night I would dread the moment I had to do my dance because I was so bad at it and I could feel the audience cringe in their embarrassment for me. It was the most humiliating experience of my life. But the good thing is that I got my most humiliating experience out of the way when I was only ten. Parents, you should have your children do theatre. It’s a wonderful learning ground. Theatre’s lessons and experiences (even the humiliating ones) will fuel them long after they have forgotten all about the periodic table. And if you need any further encouragement then just watch the schoolchildren in Florida as they try to change their world. Obviously, it’s not just theatre that makes these young people so remarkable: they’ve also grown up with the Internet and know how to use it. So now I’m worried that the coming generations might be quite special and that an old person like me will be left spluttering, “I would have gotten away with it if it hadn’t been for you darn kids!”. ■

Windsor + Eton, England | MY GUIDE
Only 35 minutes by train from London, you don’t need a royal wedding to visit the twin towns of Windsor and Eton Words Amy McPherson | Illustration Josephine Skapare | Art Direction Euric Liew
See & Do ROYAL WEDDING VENUE Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world, where the Queen spends her weekends. Forty monarchs have resided in this Castle. Be sure to time your visit with the Castle’s change of guards at 11.00 a.m. each day. If you happen to be outside the castle before this time, you can watch the New Guards procession on the main road toward the castle. Not to be missed is St George’s Chapel inside the Castle compound, where Prince Harry was baptised. It is also here that he will wed Meghan Markle on Saturday, 19 May. WALK THE CARRIAGE WAY Take a stroll up the tree-lined ‘Long Walk’ in Windsor Great Park, the path the Queen and visiting Heads of States travel in their carriages towards the Castle. Monuments such as the Copper Horse, the Obelisk and Roman ruins imported from Libya are scattered across the park amid the beautiful lawns and ancient oaks that are alive with wildlife. GO OPEN TOP While Windsor is relatively easy to walk around, it may be more entertaining to get on the top deck of The Original Tour Windsor bus and have the attractions pointed out and explained to you. The bus will also cross the river and pass Eton College along the way and is a good way to get orientated around this Royal town. Parts of the tour follow the route of the wedding procession! ROYAL ENGAGEMENT Prince Harry and Meghan took their engagement photos at Frogmore House in Windsor Home Park, where the pair went on a picnic

WALK WITH THE QUEEN Joining 63 points of interest is the Queens Walkway, a self-guided walking route around Windsor that links the major attractions and viewing points in town, with views across the river to Eton. Pick up a map and walking directions from the Information Centre to begin your tour! DISCOVER ETON Across the River Thames is Eton, a small town that has great importance in history. The best way to learn about Eton is to follow the self-guided Eton Walkway, signposted by bronze Eton coat of arms markers on the ground and trails many of Eton’s most significant historical and cultural sights. GET AN EDUCATION Eton is most famously known for the prestigious Eton College, where Prince Harry and Prince William, The Duke of Cambridge, both studied. Visit on a Sunday afternoon to learn everything about the town at the Eton Museum on the college grounds.

date last summer. Frogmore House is open to visitors only on selected days in the year, so check in advance when planning your visit.
TAKE TO THE RIVER There is no better way to enjoy the two quintessentially English towns than to take a leisurely trip on the Thames to learn some of the interesting facts about Windsor and Eton, as well as take in the beautiful sights along the way. The French Brothers offer 40-minute to twohour-long tours departing from the riverside pier near Windsor Bridge.

RIVERSIDE DINING At Windsor’s only riverside pub, The Boatman has fantastic views of the Thames across to Eton village. With great British cuisine made with locally sourced seasonal ingredients, it is the gastropub of choice for a casual meal. BUY ROYAL PRODUCE The Royal Estate of Windsor operates a mixed farm, producing its own quality food available for the public to purchase. The Windsor Farm Shop is where you can stock up on fresh produce or luxury gourmet hampers to take home. The shop café is great for a spot of afternoon tea. SHOP & DINE ARCADE STYLE Set up in the style of a semioutdoors in the Grade II-listed Victorian Railway Station opposite Windsor Castle in Windsor Royal Shopping Centre. A great shopping destination with more than 40 shops, check out the original features including Jubilee Arch and Queen Victoria’s Royal Waiting Room. STAY & DINE GEORGIAN On the Eton side of the river, The George Inn offers bed and breakfast as well as all-day dining in a lovely Georgian building. ONE FOR THE EQUESTRIANS The Queen has a soft spot for her horses. For equestrian enthusiasts, the Royal Windsor Horse Show happening from 9-13 May is the event to go for. This is the only time when the public can access the private grounds of Windsor Castle. It features events such as Show Jumping, Dressage and Carriage Driving as well as displays from various royal guards and regiments. FIELDS OF GOLD Spring brings blossoms of daffodils across the country, but nowhere as much as the Daffodil Valley in The Valley Garden of Windsor Great Park. This is where you’ll get to see England’s largest display of daffodils, amid the fantastic array of azaleas, camellias and magnolias. WATCH POLO The Queen first presented the trophy in 1960, and the Cartier Queen’s Cup is now one of the top five polo tournaments in the world. Held at the Guards Polo Club in Windsor Great Park, it is a key event in the English social season. From 22 May to 17 June. GO TO THE RACES Arguably the highlight of the British social calendar, when tradition, pageantry, fashion and style come together for the excitement of the race, watch the Royal Procession from Golden Gates into the Parade Ring at Royal Ascot from 19 to 23 June. COUNT THE SWANS Swan Upping is an annual population census of the mute swans on the River Thames, performed by Her Majesty’s Swan Warden and the Royal Swan Uppers in traditional wooden rowing boats. This may be a bizarre sight for foreign visitors but is a historic ceremony that dates from the 12th century when the Crown claimed ownership of all mute swans. This not-to-be-missed event takes place on 16-20 July.
THEATRE FESTIVAL Festival lovers will love the mixed programmes at the Windsor Fringe Festival, where music, drama and visual arts of all kinds entertain the Windsor crowds. Enjoy an informative walk around Windsor or take part in a gastronomy event and soak up the lively atmosphere this festival often brings! From 21 September to 6 October. GET YOUR SKATES ON During the winter months in Alexandra Gardens, you can ice skate in the shadow of Windsor
Castle. Windsor On Ice has a main indoor skating rink and a smaller outdoor rink, as well as a Christmas-market-style food court to relax with a mug of mulled wine. Traditionally held from November to January, check out windsoronice.com for 2018 dates.

HE Victoria Treadell | IN PROFILE
The Accidental Diplomat Her Excellency Victoria Treadell did not plan for a career in the foreign service. Now, nearly 40 years later, she has achieved many firsts, including as the first female British High Commissioner to Malaysia on 21 October 2014. Interview Julie Goh | Photography SooPhye
was one occasion when we came back. Then as a young junior diplomat, I was here on my first assignment to the British High Commission and that was between 1986 and 1990.
What about your childhood that was most memorable?
Yes, there’s a lot of visible change in the economic development of Malaysia. You just have to look at the infrastructure. If I go back to my childhood or even when I was here in the late 80s, early 90s, KLCC was a race course. The twin towers at KLCC as we see it today did not exist. The whole city centre transformation, the highways that we have now in Malaysia have shortened the drive time between KL and Ipoh, for example, when it would have taken at least four to five hours to drive before the new highways were built. In that sense, I have seen a lot of development, a lot of economic transformation. The Malaysian economy has gone through diversification and is not so dependent on commodities. This is something your government is focused on, including the whole new digital economic agenda.
I think it was being part of a very large family, a very typical Malaysian family. My mother, in particular, was one of nine (siblings), so I had lots of aunties and uncles who had lots of children, so huge gangs of cousins. With the aunties taking turns at weekends and having the nephews and nieces over, my childhood memories were very much filled with the fun and games of being with cousins. Food, of course, was a dominating factor, like all Malaysian households, particularly around Chinese New Year, but also during other festivals and when my grandfather, gung-gung, was still alive, we would go and visit. I also remember going to school as a typical Malaysian child with my blue pinafore dress, white shirt and white canvas pumps. Going to school with my friends from all the races, and I think back then, in the late 60s just being friends with everybody, going to each other’s houses with the different festivals, whether it was Diwali or Hari Raya. It was very much a multi-cultural environment that I grew up in. Those are the memories of my childhood. You spent nine years here as a child and went to a local school for two years; do you speak any Bahasa Malaysia?
I learnt Bahasa at school and some of my parents’ staff spoke Bahasa but it was an English medium education then. Like a lot of children in Malaysia, you grow up trilingual. We spoke English because that’s what my father spoke. When I was with my mother’s family, we would speak in Cantonese and of course, Bahasa was something you picked up and also learnt at school. I often say I left Malaysia when I was eight, so I have the vocabulary of an eight-year-old. How many times have you been back prior to 2014?
I came back a couple of times for family holidays when I was a teenager. One year, in particular, was my grandfather’s 80th birthday and 80 years is a very significant age if you’re Chinese. So that
May 2018_InProfile_Vicki Treadell02b.indd 33
Malaysia, then and now, must have been a world of difference.
I’ve seen the change in other things as well. For example, English is no longer the medium of education and so, vernacular schools are flourishing, which I think one can understand but at the same time, one of the things that Malaysia has lost, which we need to find a way to put it back, is that generations of young people have not grown up together, have not gone to school together. Socialising amongst Malaysians happens in a different way. It’s wonderful that we still have the tradition of open houses but in some sense – maybe it’s nostalgia – open house was
My team and I have been working on promoting the modern and contemporary relevance of Britain because although we have a history and the people-to-people relationship, why should Britain matter to Malaysians today?
every weekend across all your friends. You didn’t wait for festivals to go to the homes of other races. Now, it’s only three to four times a year. How would you describe relations between Great Britain and Malaysia in 2014 and now?
I would contrast it to when I was first here in 1986 at the height of “Buy British Last”. It was not the best period of our history, and I contrast it to returning all these years later when the relationship is as strong as it has ever been. There has been a renewal in our relationship. That is something that I and my team have been working very much on and if I use the example of “Buy British Last” in the 80s, today, walk into any shopping mall in Malaysia, you will find British stores whether it’s Marks and Spencer or perhaps less obvious, but every Guardian Pharmacy is owned by Britain’s Jardines. That tells a story of how since that low ebb in our relationship, we have rebuilt it and gone from strength to strength. Now, it’s not just about Malaysian students going to the U.K. to pursue their studies, but British institutions are investing in Malaysia. We have five British university campuses here. Nottingham was the first one, and we have over 30 British international schools. So British academic institutions are investing in Malaysia and in many respects, helping Malaysia realise its own ambitions of becoming an education destination in this part of the world.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 33 | May 2018
Born in Malaysia, Vicki, as she is fondly known, received her early education at Tarcisian Convent in Ipoh. She talks to us about her early childhood spent with a large family and coming back as a diplomat not once, but twice, since leaving Malaysia at the age of eight.
You obviously had a clear idea of what you wanted to achieve when you were appointed High Commissioner to Malaysia. What were some of these ideas?
The first priority was to make sure that we built on a renewed and strengthened relationship. A key moment before my time in 2012, when our then-Prime Minister David Cameron came to Malaysia, he and (Malaysian) Prime Minister Najib established a very good relationship, so my starting position was a strong one. We then saw in 2015 Prime Minister Cameron come back to Malaysia to show that commitment and good relationship at the highest political level, so what we’ve been focusing on is on increasing our trade and investment relationship, building on what we have achieved before but working even more closely with your Ministry of International Trade and Industry to look at the sectors where Britain has particular strength
4/17/18 12:15 PM
IN PROFILE | HE Victoria Treadell
and Malaysia has particular opportunities. But it’s not just about what we sell to each other or what we invest in each other but how we can collaborate. One of the things I’m proud that I’ve achieved with my team is building this concept of partnerships. If I take the digital economy, which is a priority for the Malaysian government, as an example, in 2016, I signed, on behalf of the British government, an MoU with MDEC (Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation) that we would work very closely together to scope out opportunities for our and Malaysia’s digital sector. We have seen three delegations to the U.K. to look at our technology and innovation offer, and last October, we had the largest ever tech mission – some 45 British companies and organisations coming to Malaysia to look at partnerships, joint ventures and investments in Malaysia. Come October, you would have been here for four years, and typically, each posting is for a four-year period. Any idea yet where you’ll be going next?
You focus on a four-year plan always knowing that you will be moving on, but the point is what you hand over to your successor, so that the
May 2018_InProfile_Vicki Treadell02b.indd 34
successor takes over the baton and then runs their own race to make sure that we build on what we have achieved. You asked me the question what else am I proud of achieving, apart from this new (MDEC) partnership and collaborative model, I think education has been a huge strength and pillar of our bilateral relationship. There is something like 500,000 Malaysian alumni of British universities today in Malaysia. We have maintained Malaysian student interest in going to Britain such that Malaysian students account for the second largest foreign student body in the U.K. – some 18,000 Malaysians are studying in the U.K. This is second only to China and way ahead of India and other countries, and that’s part of the people-to-people ties that we have, the comfort and the familiarity with each other. This is why so many Malaysians get on Malaysia Airlines to fly to the U.K. all the time, whether for business or pleasure. Some Malaysians just go back to do the same thing every year, for the shopping, the theatre, the wonderful heritage that we have, the natural beauty and landscape of the Lake District and Peak District, all of that and of course, some 400,000-450,000 British tourists come here a year. It’s one of the big destinations
in Southeast Asia for British tourists. This is something that we want to preserve. Coming back to education, we are working to make sure we’re not complacent, that the British offer remains the preferred offer for Malaysians. Because it is globally competitive, people can choose other countries, but we want them to continue to choose Britain. My team and I have been working on promoting the modern and contemporary relevance of Britain because although we have a history and the people-topeople relationship, why should Britain matter to Malaysians today? So apart from education, our trade and investment, the other big issue that we can work on is partnerships with Malaysia. If we look at defence and security, what very few people know about is something we call the Five Powers Defence Agreement (FPDA), which is where Britain, Australia and New Zealand are working with Singapore and Malaysia to guarantee the defence of Singapore and Malaysia. We have some British armed services personnel alongside Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia at the HQ for the FPDA in Butterworth (in Penang, Malaysia). Every year, we practise between our armed services so that if the call

My home cooking is more rustic, simple dishes. I cook all variety of food but obviously, I cook Asian food, not least because of my own Asian heritage, and so curries, stir-fry, and like everyone else, we cook pasta as a quick and easy dish. Every now and then, I do the full-blown English roast dinner because you must do that! Any favourite dish?
I couldn’t say I have a favourite. If I was to boil it down to two types of food I tend to eat most, I would say Indian and Chinese. Even when I was in London last week, the two meals I had out were in Indian restaurants! There have been some negative reactions in the U.K. to the marriage of HRH Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. What is your opinion on that? Isn’t it proof of how far Britain has come on race?
ever came to defend Malaysia, we know what our operating procedures are. Equally on cyber security, we all have a shared concern about the threat of extremisms and how that might tip over to terrorism. Thank God, Malaysia has never experienced the kind of terrorist attacks we have seen in Britain, but there are people – when you restrict their space in other geographies – who might be looking for new areas to perpetrate that kind of thing. So, homeland security is another important piece of work that we have been doing with Malaysia. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I have such a busy work life that if I have a quiet weekend or an evening to myself, it’s important to spend it with my husband, who sees very little of me during the work week. So, catching up with my husband, catching up with each other’s news, talking about current events, reading books and comparing notes. They’re really quite quiet and peaceful pastimes. I hear you’re into gastronomy?
Yes, I like to cook. I find cooking therapeutic and calming, and the results are usually edible. This is the other thing I like doing during my free time.

There are some old-fashioned perceptions of Britain, (but) the marriage of His Royal Highness Prince Harry and Meghan Markle actually reflect what modern Britain is all about. In ordinary society in Britain, mixed race marriages are not unusual, not unacceptable, so Britain has come a very long way since then. Those who might comment in a negative way do not actually reflect the majority view in our country. Whatever people read, Britain is a very open, pluralist society, where people have all the freedoms of a democracy, of self-expression in all its forms, to the extent that even our media write all sorts of things that in some countries if they were written about the Prime Minister or the government, they would find unacceptable. We can’t say we believe in a free press but then we clamp down on what the press says. Having the right laws – there is responsibility with freedom of expression – that as long as it does not incite hatred, whether religious, racial or whatever, then
there should be tolerance in the society to allow for a diversity of opinion. Coming back to your point, I think the fact that we are seeing this royal marriage is a cause for celebration and pride for a country for whom this is just completely acceptable and normal, and as I often point out to journalists, when I joined the British Foreign Service 40 years ago, there were not very many people who were different, never mind gender. I remember joining as an 18-year-old, and looking at the ladder above me, there were no female ambassadors or very many senior women. It was a very white Anglo-Saxon hierarchy. Yet someone like myself – born in Malaysia, Eurasian, family moved to Britain – that I can return to Malaysia as the British High Commissioner tells you what Britain is all about – a country that has no difficulty with this. You’ve been in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for 40 years now. That’s a long time. You must really enjoy what you do.
When I joined the foreign office, I was only intending to work for about six months, save as much money as I could and then go off to travel before going to university, but then I thought I could have a life of travel if I applied myself to this career. For example, from KL, there are so many wonderful places to get to, not just in Malaysia but beyond. When I think about my time in India, to be able to explore that country, or on the other side of the world in New Zealand, being able to go and visit parts of South Pacific that you would not ordinarily get to. Even my first posting overseas to Pakistan, to be able to go to the remote areas – now because of security issues are impossible to go to – with the most amazing scenery that is largely untouched and undeveloped. These experiences of being able to travel because of where I am sent are just such a privilege. ■

Shakespeare’s recently-rebuilt Globe Theatre is on the south bank of the River Thames because it was only here that he could perform his funny, rude and epic plays. Throughout the Middle Ages, London’s strict laws did not extend to the south of the river, so the real fun begins only when you cross London Bridge to Southwark. Old London Bridge stood from 1209 to 1831 and was crammed with shops and houses, enlivened with the severed heads of traitors left rotting on spikes. Over the centuries, the bridge became so decrepit that a new one had to be built. Crossing the new London Bridge, you will have one of the best views of London and the River Thames as you begin your journey.

Near today’s London Bridge station and the foodies’ heaven of Borough Market, Medieval pilgrims used to gather in a mood of springtime excitement before commencing their pilgrimage to the tomb of Saint Thomas at Canterbury cathedral, 100 kilometres to the southeast of London. In 1389, Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales, one of the earliest and most important works of English literature, about one such group of pilgrims, and in the first part

Most visitors to the United Kingdom never leave London but there is another country beyond the capital city and it’s called England. So why not hire a car and drive 100 kilometres south through the counties of Kent and East Sussex to the seaside town of Brighton, better known by its sobriquet ‘London-By-The-Sea’. But as with all the best holidays, the destination is less important than the journey, and along your way, you will pass through a slice of British history, its towns, gorgeous villages and countryside while following in the footsteps of ancient pilgrims, trend-setting royalty and their trend-following subjects. You’ll also be passing through the part of the world where I grew up. So get in your rental car, leave London behind and let me show you another country.

London grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century when railways and the Underground connected previously separate villages until everything merged into one enormous urban whole. It might be hard to spot the charm of South London as you drive southwards but so many great cultural personalities were born here. Charlie Chaplin and Michael Caine were both born into the poverty that was Elephant and Castle, named after an 18th-century inn where coaches changed their horses. The area is now undergoing the inevitable London gentrification and property prices are leaping upwards. Keep going south and you won’t even realise that you have actually left London and entered the county of Kent as you drive through Bromley, where David Bowie grew up. The Rolling Stones, the iconic English rock band, came from nearby Dartford. Leaving London’s urban landscape behind, you will enter the rural luxuriant green fields, woodlands and farms of the English countryside dotted with sheep, cattle and idyllic villages. Britain is crisscrossed with public footpaths so you can always leave the main roads, stop the car and go for a walk in the quiet of the country. One of the best places for a stopover is just north of Sevenoaks, where Chaucer’s pilgrims proceeded eastward along the Pilgrim’s Way, a footpath along a band of soil that remains dry all year round and was 3,000 years earlier a pilgrimage route from the English Channel to the truly ancient holy site of Stonehenge far to the west. In Sevenoaks, visit the large Elizabethan stately home of Knole House and its deer park where The Beatles made a film for Strawberry Fields Forever.

South of Sevenoaks you will come to Tunbridge Wells. It’s a modern town by English standards (early 1600s) and was borne from tourism. Go to the lowest point in the town where there is a spring and a delightful arcade of shops called the Pantiles. Bath is its most famous city but there are spa towns throughout England, where people once flocked to drink the health-giving waters and to promenade with fashionable society. Spas were especially popular with British royalty and after King Charles I and later Queen Victoria visited Tunbridge Wells, their subjects followed. Now in summertime, you can eat outside on the Pantiles, while listening to music being played on the bandstand. Leaving Tunbridge Wells, you will drive through some of the most verdant countryside that England has to offer. The road will dip down and then rise over soft crests so that lovely vistas are always possible. This is not a rugged terrain but something altogether subtler and familiar in its lyricism. That might be because we are entering a land of authors. Just before reaching Crowborough, you will pass a bleak landscape that looks more like the moors of Scotland than southern England. This is Ashdown Forest. If you’ve ever read Winnie the Pooh then you’ll

Wells, the creator of science fiction, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, and of course, A.A. Milne. In the 18th century, British royalty invented the seaside holiday, and it was in Brighton that the long Brighton Palace Pier and grand buildings along its seafront show made Brighton beach the original beach holiday resort. going to Brighton to dip in the sea. When he became King George IV, he built for himself the magnificent Brighton Pavilion, which inspired the design of Kuala Lumpur’s Railway Station built in 1900. With the British Empire beginning to grow into Asia, those faraway sights became the inspiration for Brighton Pavilion, which is filled with an exotic blend of India and China. Brighton Pavilion is a unique experience and one of Britain’s must-visit destinations. A century after King George’s reign, Brighton fell into a steep decline, becoming notorious for gangsters and poverty, made famous by Graham Greene in his novel Brighton Rock. In recent years, new residents such as DJ Fatboy Slim have revived the coastal city, making it an alternative to London, with a laid-back twist and a tight network of pedestrian streets called The Lanes teeming with shops, cafés and restaurants.

Brits have always had a passion for theatre, which is hardly surprising as it is woven into their national identity. There’s the greatest playwright of all time, William Shakespeare, who created so much of the theatre tradition. There are also greats like Sir Laurence Olivier, and many of the British stars you see on the silver screen today got their start treading the boards. This history and infrastructure creates some of the best entertainment you can find, drawing in native Londoners as well as star-struck tourists. The first place they all stop, of course, is the West End. Shaftesbury Avenue holds a mesmerising strip of top shows, starting with the immensely popular Harry Potter and The Cursed Child. We then wander down the stretch of popular shows such as the long-running Thriller – Live and the new hit musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. If classic drama is more your thing, head to the South Bank, where you’ll find two theatre giants standing by the river.
1. Lin-Manuel Miranda's historical hip-hop musical Hamilton has been nominated for the most awards at Olivier, the U.K.'s most prestigious theatre awards, just months after debuting in December
At one end, Britain’s National Theatre is a concrete behemoth that produces some of the most talked-about plays in the world. Actors Bryan Cranston, Ralph Fiennes and Andrew Garfield have all starred on The National’s stage, while a 2007 production of War Horse has toured the world and inspired a Steven Spielberg film. At the other end of the South Bank is Shakespeare’s Globe, a painstaking reproduction of the original Globe Theatre, where Shakespeare’s plays were first shown to the public. Built in 1997, this faithful reconstruction allows fans to sit or stand and watch Shakespeare’s works as they might have been seen four hundred years ago (if you’re after something a little more dynamic, The Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-Upon-Avon is a couple of hours away by train). Farther down The Thames, the newest kid on the block is the picturesque Bridge Theatre. Nestled beside HMS Belfast and overlooked by Tower Bridge, it’s the brainchild of former National Theatre Artistic Director Nicholas Hytner, who has brought some famous friends along for the ride. Having already produced sold-out productions of Young Marx and Julius Caesar, the director of Oscar-winning Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Martin McDonagh, will bring his new play A Very, Very, Very Dark Matter to the theatre in October, starring beloved British actor Jim Broadbent. Expensive, star-led productions not your thing? London also produces some of the finest fringe theatre productions. A short walk from the shopping heaven of Oxford Street is Soho Theatre, a funky venue showcasing the best in fringe theatre and stand-up comedy. Focusing

Getting a ticket for a West End show has always been very high on the wish list of visitors to London. With all the glamour and prestige of New York’s Broadway, Central London’s theatre district is thick with history. There has never been a better time to dive into the city’s theatre scene. With exciting venues popping up all over the Thames, and the stars of tomorrow cultivating a vibrant fringe scene, there is something to suit every taste.

To the south in Elephant and Castle, Southwark Playhouse specialises in quirky and powerful stage works. Upcoming productions include #BeMoreMartyn (June), a tribute to one of the victims of the 2017 Manchester bombing, and Bring It On, a musical based on the hit movie with lyrics by musical sensation Lin-Manuel Miranda. If that last name sounds familiar, then you should be familiar with the first of our must-see shows while visiting London’s theatre scene. Having rocked Broadway with its contemporary take on American history, Hamilton came to the Victoria Palace Theatre late last year and is still the only place to see the production outside of America. Miranda himself collaborated with West End titan and Les Misérables creator Cameron Mackintosh to bring the show to London with a new cast that is every bit as exciting as its American equivalent. With universal five-star reviews and a devoted fan base, it won’t be easy to find a ticket, but a breath-taking experience awaits if you do.

on new writing that questions the society we live in, the tickets are cheaper than the glitzy musicals nearby and may just introduce you to a new artistic perspective. About five minutes’ walk from Waterloo Station, The Young Vic is equally well-known for pushing boundaries. As well as new writing, the theatre has also welcomed Sienna Miller in a production of Cat On A Hot Tin Roof and Mark Strong in Arthur Miller’s A View From The Bridge in recent years.

Preserving A Botanical Legacy Kew’s iconic Temperate House opens after a five-year major restoration. Words Kim Inglis | Photography courtesy of RBG Kew

By the turn of the century, botanists had all but given up hope of finding any remaining Dombeya mauritiana trees in the wild, as the last specimen had been found in Mauritius in 1976. Sightings — and news of sightings — of this beautiful tree with its pendant pink flowers in its native habitat had dwindled, and the tree was considered extinct. So, when news filtered down of a possible sighting in the midst of a virtually impenetrable guava thicket in the centre of the island, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew horticulturalists collaborated with a local team and fought their way through the jungle to find it. Imagine their surprise when instead of a small shrub, they found a 10-metre-tall tree! Kew’s plant guru Carlos Magdalena took some cuttings and successfully propagated them — and now visitors from all over the world can view this extremely rare treasure in the newly reopened Temperate House at Kew Gardens.
And, naturally, the environment itself is amazingly beautiful. Intrepid Victorian horticulturalists would open their eyes wide in wonder at the inroads both science and engineering have forged at the “new” glasshouse. Around 400 people laboured for five years to painstakingly renovate 15,000 panes of glass; mend and restored wooden window frames; stripped down the structure to its skeleton of wrought and cast iron and steel; then repainted it with four different coats specially designed to protect the metal work from corrosion. A new heating system utilising a biomass boiler fed with U.K.-sourced wood pellets keeps the temperature above 10 degrees centigrade, and allows for automatic ventilation — a great
1 22
This is just one of many success stories at the Gardens, where horticulturalists regularly ‘save’ species from extinction, often resorting to highly technical propagation methods, including cloning. Once they are saved, they are nurtured in the same sort of environment from whence they came. Visitors can now view such plants, trace their provenance and follow their histories in the recently restored Victorian glasshouse backing onto the world-famous arboretum at Kew. Called the Temperate House, it was the world’s largest glasshouse when it was originally built in 1863 adjacent to the Thames; it is reopening this month after a five-year restoration project that cost GBP41 million (RM225 million). Housing 10,000 plants, some of which are extremely rare and threatened, it is simultaneously a temple of plant learning and a showcase of some of our planet’s spellbinding biodiversity. Stories of plant survival from temperate regions around the world — from the Mediterranean, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, South and Central America, Asia and island floras — are both inspirational and educational.

improvement from the past when all the windows had to be manually opened and closed. It also automatically turns on radiators when the temperatures drop. New pavers in pale cream lead visitors along pathways that are surrounded by abundant vegetation and a number of imaginative water features, including a central three-metre-high waterfall, some natural-looking cascades, a couple of gentle streams and a terraced water feature built up in natural stone. There’s even a boggy area created at the edges of a pool to display African water-loving plants.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 46 | May 2018
But even though the shell is wondrous to behold, it is the flora that captivates. Whether you are an amateur botanist, a scientist or simply a person who is interested in the natural world, this living, breathing classroom cannot fail to delight. Before the renovation, 500 plants were removed and housed in a temporary nursery, where they were nurtured, progagated and grown in a lengthy and delicate process that involved new science, dedication and time. Now, an incredible 10,000 have gone back into the glasshouse. Stories of some of these unusual plants that Kew has rescued and the journeys they have taken to their new home are spellbinding. Take the Tree Daisy (Cylindrocline lorencei), for
example. Seeds from the last wild plant had been collected, but would not germinate using conventional methods, so Kew’s scientists turned to micropropagation. First, they identified a small number of living cells contained within the embryos of seeds from one plant. Next, some of these living cells were extracted and cultured. Slowly but steadily, they multiplied under sterile conditions in the laboratory. After several years of patient work, three clones were successfully reared and may now be viewed in the Temperate House. In contrast to the sumptuous, romantic surroundings of the Temperate House, these plants also showcase how humankind is allowing them to fall prey to a variety of threats — educating us about their potential and how important it is to prevent them from dying out. After all, they may hold the secrets for survival or may be the custodians of potential cures for cancer, ebola or other life-threatening diseases.
5
Richard Barley, Kew’s Director of Horticulture notes that the Garden’s experts have over 250 years of plant expertise, worldwide collections, partnerships spanning 110 countries, and 131 hectares that make up the most biodiverse place on the planet. As such, they are well-placed to bring global attention to plants threatened by extinction. It isn’t any

The Venue The venue for the wedding, at noon on 19 May, will be the stunning St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, considered one of the most beautiful examples of late-medieval Gothic architecture in England. With a rich and colourful history, the ornate Chapel features lavish decorations in marble, stained glass, mosaic and bronze. The venue, which can seat 800, is no stranger to the Royal Family. Prince Harry was christened there as a baby, while Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, had their marriage blessing there in 2005. It will also be the venue for the wedding of Prince Harry’s cousin, Princess Eugenie of York, when she marries Jack Brooksbank later this year.
The Service Although the venue is steeped in tradition, the couple are very clear that their wedding celebrations will “reflect the characters of the bride and groom”. They have been closely involved in choosing the music, hymns and prayers for the traditional ceremony. The Dean of Windsor will marry the couple, and the Archbishop of Canterbury will officiate the marriage vows. In anticipation of the marriage, Meghan was baptised on 6 March in the Chapel Royal at St. James Palace, where her future father-in-law Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall attended the baptism as representatives of the crown. She was later confirmed into the Anglican faith, allowing her to join her soon-to-be husband at Holy Communion.
The Bouquet While speculation is rife around a hundred details about the wedding, one thing is almost certain. Following a tradition that dates to the wedding of Queen Victoria’s oldest daughter, Princess Victoria, a sprig of myrtle will form part of the bouquet. It should be no surprise that the myrtle plant is a symbol of love, as well as the Hebrew symbol for marriage. Apparently, the royal myrtle plant was given to Victoria by her husband Albert’s grandmother and it has featured in royal weddings ever since. There’s also speculation that despite Meghan’s love of roses and peonies, her bouquet will also include some sprays of lily of the valley. The arching stems of fragrant white bell-shaped flowers will be seen as a tribute to Prince Harry’s late mother Princess Diana, as future sister-in-law Catherine, the Duchess of York’s bouquet also was.
The Ring The iconic sapphire and diamond ring that Princess Diana wore at her engagement now sits on the hand of Catherine, but Markle will sparkle, especially with the engagement ring that Prince Harry designed himself, using gems from the jewellery collection of his late mother. The trilogy engagement ring, made by court jewellers Cleave and Company, features a cushion-cut 2 diamond from Botswana as its centrepiece. Its yellow gold band – reportedly a favourite of Meghan’s – will go nicely with the wedding ring, which tradition dictates will be fashioned from

Centuries-old traditions will take centre stage as the world looks forward to the wedding of Prince Harry and his bride, American actress Meghan Markle. It will be the most important day of their lives, but it’s already clear that far from being a sombre and official occasion, the couple want a wedding that is focused on fun, love, celebration and joy that everyone can share in!
1. Meghan's bouquet will likely feature a sprig of myrtle and sprays of lily of the valley, as seen here in Catherine Middleton's during her wedding 2. The stunning St George's Chapel in Windsor is the venue for the wedding 3. The royal residence, Windsor Castle, is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world

We might have already seen her in a wedding dress, as her Suits TV character Rachel Zane, but Meghan has hinted that Rachel’s ballerina-style gown was not quite her taste. Professing to like something more “whimsical and romantic”, the modern and elegant bride-to-be will definitely bring her own style to the fore. Inbal Dror, a leading Israeli dress designer, famous for her exquisite lace and elegant silhouettes, has apparently been asked to submit ideas to the Palace, but hot contenders include Meghan’s favourite Turkish-Canadian designer Erdem Moralıoğlu, who is already a hit with the royals. While the designer is traditionally revealed only on the day of the wedding, also in the running to design the wedding dress is the Australianoriginated, London-based haute couture fashion house Ralph & Russo, whose design Meghan debuted in one of her engagement snaps.

The Love Nest The couple will live in Nottingham Cottage, which is tucked away in the grounds of Kensington Palace (fondly referred to as KP by Princess Diana). The two-bedroom cottage is reportedly next to Ivy Cottage, which Princess Eugenie and her fiancée Jack will occupy. While it is the smallest home on the 17th-century estate, it boasts reception rooms designed by Sir Christopher Wren, one of the greatest English architects ever, who was also responsible for designing St Paul’s Cathedral. Previous occupants of the cottage include Prince Harry’s aunt, Princess Diana’s sister, Lady Jane Fellowes, and her husband Sir Robert Fellowes, who was the Queen’s former secretary. Catherine and Prince William will not be far away. They live in the 20-room Apartment 1A, situated inside the Palace. Meghan and Prince Harry will no doubt also have a standing invitation to the private Balmoral estate in the summer and the Sandringham estate at Christmas.
The Bride There’s no denying that Meghan is bringing a breath of fresh air (and a touch of rebellion) to the Royal Family. While Catherine has toed the line with her traditional take on fashion and her formal demeanour, the pressure seems to be off Meghan to fit into the royal box. Breaking protocol from day one, when she appeared at her engagement announcement in bare legs (the Royal Family is not allowed to show cleavage and must never go bare legged!), the risqué mesh-top she wore in her formal engagement photos also raised eyebrows. Other fashion firsts include messy buns, pant suits on formal occasions, and a casual cross-body purse, which was a royal first. 5 Meghan’s many public displays of affection are also in stark contrast to the Duchess, who barely touched Prince William at their engagement announcement. It’s obvious Meghan is bringing her own brand of styles to the royals. ■ About the writer Joanna Abishegam-David is a Malaysian-born writer and editor living in London. Meghan applied for an internship at the U.S. Embassy, and ended up working in Buenos Aires for a few months.

Is Meghan going to pick a traditional or trendy dress? Will she opt for something simple? Or being the glamorous actress that she is (or was), maybe a showstopper design is more her thing? When her character on the TV series Suits got married, Meghan had loads to say about her style. She stated then that classic and simple were the name of her game. That, as well as the addition of a modern twist. “I have the luxury of wearing beautiful pieces of clothing every day for work, so my personal style – wedding or not – is very pareddown and relaxed,” Meghan stated in a 2016 interview. Here, we got three Malaysian designers to give us their take on the royal wedding dress:
Modern Sensuality Nurita Harith’s design for Meghan is effortlessly elegant. The offshoulder gown offers a sexy vibe, as well as highlights her svelte figure. A subtle button detailing gives it a trendy feel. Nurita explains that royal wedding dresses have always been traditional. They often come paired with voluminous cuts and lace. However, she would like to see Meghan wear something that fits her personality. “Meghan is a woman with taste. She is a very passionate person – yet she has remained subtle with

her selections in the past. She exudes modern glamour on the red carpet despite choosing classic pieces,” she adds. nuritaharith.com
Timeless Beauty For Syomirizwa Gupta, it is Meghan’s Hollywood mystique that captures his imagination. Yet, he prefers she wears a really demure wedding dress and not something too over-the-top or trendy. “I would say a timeless style would be best. When it comes to weddings, I like my brides to be able to spot themselves in photographs 20 years later and not think that they somehow looked ridiculous,” he states. Clean, chic and altogether regal, Syomirizwa’s design has a soft silhouette – plus a hint of vintage feel. It is borderline conservative, but still provides that pizzazz

Contemporary Appeal Tengku Mohamed Syahmi Tengku Mahmood thinks that Meghan should choose something directional and modern. That being said, he expects she will keep to tradition and not stray too far from the Royal Family’s wishes. The dress he came up with for Meghan is one that he describes as “what a modern princess would wear for her big day”. His design seamlessly infuses contemporary appeal with quiet grace. “I find her very confident in carrying herself and in what she’s wearing publicly. I think she represents the future of the British monarchy, and as such, she requires a modern wedding dress,” he points out. ■ tsyahmi.com

From crockery emblazoned with official portraits to solar-powered toys with the queen’s characteristic wave, Britain’s monarchy is big business. And that royal economy, normally catering to tourists and enthusiasts, kicks into high gear around major events. “It’s a flash of colour in a rather gray world,” said Emma, the eponymous founder of the ceramics company. Britain’s royal family likely contributed an estimated GBP1.8 billion (RM9.9 billion) to the country’s economy last year, according to Brand Finance, a consulting firm. The bulk of that was GBP550 million (RM3 billion) from tourism. Brand Finance estimates that travellers in town for Prince Harry’s wedding, scheduled for this month, will bring an additional GBP500 million (RM2.8 billion) this year. Roughly one-tenth of that amount is expected to come from merchandise sales. Enthusiastic collectors like Margaret Tyler are a discerning audience. A dedicated royalist,
Margaret, 73, has filled her home in northwest London with commemorative items, including a copy of the Issa dress that Kate Middleton wore during the announcement of her engagement to Prince William, and a little glass dish with a picture of Queen Elizabeth II that started her collection. One of her rooms is dedicated solely to Princess Diana, and another to the queen, which she rents out for 75 pounds a night. Insurers have valued her collection at GBP40,000 (RM220,000). “I would like nice proper bone china stuff,” Margaret said of the merchandise surrounding the latest royal wedding. “I don’t buy everything. I’ve got to like it.” Royal fever is a capitalist tradition in Britain. Royal Crown Derby, a porcelain manufacturer, has been making commemorative products since the coronation of King George III in 1760. Jan Hugo, a 59-year-old collector with 10,000 pieces who is based in New South Wales, Australia, has teapots dating back to Queen Victoria’s reign. “I think they just look for an excuse to be able to do it, every time there’s a birth, wedding, engagement, anniversary, anything,” Jan said. When Prince William married in 2011, the high-end British department store Fortnum & Mason sold a Wedding Breakfast Blend tea from Kenya, where he proposed. The Legothemed amusement park Legoland made a brick replica of Buckingham Palace, complete with the bride, groom and assorted well-

The cameras had barely finished flashing on the newly engaged Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. But Emma Bridgewater, a British ceramics manufacturer, was already making a mug to commemorate the royal moment. The next week, just under 1,000 mugs — with “Harry & Meghan are engaged” and the date of the announcement on them — were on sale. They retailed online for around GBP20 pounds (RM110) and sold out within 24 hours.

said Steven Rowley, Royal Crown Derby’s sales and marketing director.
Emma Bridgewater’s company has sold more than 35,000 pieces of pottery based around Prince William’s wedding and has produced 15 different commemorative mugs for events ranging from Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson’s wedding in 1986, to the birth of Prince William’s second child, Princess Charlotte, in 2015. The company has annual sales of about GBP20 million (RM110 million).
As royal fever grows, the company plans to hire an additional 10-15 people. It is also hoping to tap into heightened interest in the U.S. — Meghan is American — to push its products in places like Bloomingdale’s and Bergdorf Goodman.
The merchandise this time around is extensive. Emma has another mug and tea towel planned for the wedding, as well as a mug to celebrate the third child of Prince William and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge. Royal Crown Derby has a series of designs in the works, like a heart-shaped tray for GBP75 (RM400) and a GBP150 (RM825) octagonal plate finished in gold. The company began planning four months before the engagement was officially announced as gossip swirled in the British press. It is now waiting for specifics, such as whether Meghan will use her given name, Rachel, to put the finishing touches on its fine bone china products. “One of the things that the collectors insist is that it has that level of information and detail applied to the design,”
May 2018_Explore_British Memorabilia02.indd 54
Tour operators and travel agencies are also gearing up. British Tours is putting together potential itineraries. The company already runs “Kate and William Tours,” which follow the footsteps of the royal couple, visiting the town where they went to college and Westminster Abbey, where they married. Olivia Basic, a tour planner at the company, said the themed tours for Prince Harry and Meghan could include upscale nightclubs where the prince — known in his earlier years for partying heavily — has been spotted. Others offer a chance to catch a glimpse of the wedding itself. Two days after Prince Harry’s engagement was announced, the luxury travel company Noteworthy started scouting locations near the wedding site, St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. Noteworthy is looking to replicate a similar experience during Prince William’s wedding.

Back then, it hired a place opposite Westminster Abbey, so clients — 80 of whom paid GBP500 (RM2,750) each — could watch the bride and groom as they arrived and left the church. For the celebrations commemorating Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, 200 people paid about GBP300 (RM1,650) each to spend the day on the HMS Belfast, a historic warship, to have prime position to watch the monarch’s flotilla pageant. Noteworthy has already secured a location for guests to watch Prince Harry’s wedding. But the managing director of Noteworthy, Nicola Butler, declined to say where. She said, however, that it had a view over Windsor Castle’s Henry VIII Gate and was “a space that a high-net-worth individual from the U.S. would be comfortable in.” “This,” she said, “is really big for us.” ■

Comfort Food Our definitive guide to the best London restaurants serving classic British fare. Words Hugh Thomas
Ask the average British citizen about their favourite part of their national cuisine, and they’ll invariably point to their nearest curry house, where the focus is on tongue-flinching heat and packaged poppadoms rather than flavour, or to the chippy in the next town, where the fish is frozen, the batter is brought in, and the servers don’t care.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 56 | May 2018
It all adds up to a culinary reputation Britain has struggled to shrug off. But that is certainly less the case now as British people increasingly become more explorative with their food choices, while newer restaurants dip into their heritage beyond the usual meat and two veg. Right now, British food is in a good place, and London’s restaurants provide the best places to experience it.
Rules Supposedly London’s oldest restaurant, Rules opened in 1798. A lot has been added to the wall hangings in the intervening 220 years, but much is the same – ale is still served in silver tankards, the bar and dining rooms are as ornate as people once liked them to be, and pies and oysters continue to be a main feature on the menu. Speaking of menu favourites, the rib of beef – I was once told by the MD – has probably never come off. What was a favourite dining venue for Charles Dickens and King Edward VII goes beyond being a novelty for tourists – Rules’ reputation for its food should be just as significant. rules.co.uk
serving of meat roasted over charcoal, Yorkshire pudding, crispy roast potatoes, vegetables and, of course, endless helpings of gravy. So why does Hawksmoor trample the competition? Maybe it’s the 55-day aged rump steak. Perhaps it’s the bone marrow gravy. Or is it those potatoes, roasted in duck fat? Why, all the above of course. thehawksmoor.com/locations/ airstreet
Lyle’s From a distance, you’d guess Lyle’s was modelled on the French Bistronomie movement – an active fight-back against extortionate, elitist, and overly formal dining – as witnessed in Paris. But look a little closer and it’s decidedly representative of the British larder: Crumpets, Falmouth oysters, rhubarb, smoked eel and Isle of Mull cheese furnish the menu. Especially with ex-St John head chef James Lowe in charge, some think Lyle’s is the epitome of ‘modern British’ cuisine, where elegant simplicity is the dish du jour. lyleslondon.com

Hawksmoor Once a religious tradition to break the week’s fast, the Sunday roast is an iconic dish in modern Britain. It’s widely thought that Blacklock, a meat-centric independent restaurant, does the city’s – if not Britain’s – best Sunday roast. It’s a solid contender, but between you and me, Hawksmoor is the best place to go for a

Quo Vadis Quo Vadis is as old as Britain’s current queen. If she were to visit, if it wasn’t for the room named after Karl Marx (he was a frequenter to the restaurant), or the fact that, like so much of Soho, it was formerly a brothel, she’d very much approve. Food is as British as the enormous Union Jack fluttering outside – ‘pie of the day’ is central to the menu, which features other classics like kedgeree and sticky toffee pudding. The latter, along with the smoked eel sandwich, are signature dishes that mustn’t be passed up on anyone’s first visit. quovadissoho.co.uk

as recognisable as he has helped popularise the philosophy of going the whole hog by eating every part of the animal, from nose to tail. Due to French terminology on St John’s menu, some question whether we can legitimately call the food British – Fergus’ cookbook even calls his repertoire a ‘kind of’ British cooking – while others will posit that the food and the thinking offer enough references to Britain’s culture to warrant the label. stjohnrestaurant.com/a/restaurants/ smithfield
Max’s Sandwich Shop The Wall Street Journal once described the sandwich, coined in the 1700s by the 4th Earl of Sandwich, as Britain’s biggest contribution to gastronomy. Are they having a laugh? Not if they’ve visited Max’s Sandwich Shop, which is
bringing the humble sarnie into the 21st century. Contrary to the name, it’s actually more of a restaurant. You’ll see why – large fillings such as the ham hock with fried egg, Piccalilli and shoestring potatoes necessitate tables and greaseproof paper to help ensure it all goes in your mouth, not down your shirt. maxssandwichshop.com
Holborn Dining Room The pie is such a celebrated part of British culture that we’ve named an entire week of the year after it. For Holborn Dining Room chef Calum Franklin, it’s a national obsession that’s fed into a personal one. Leading a team of 32 chefs, he makes decorative filled pastries more resemblant of porcelain ornaments than pies. Sure, the techniques he uses are similar to those of French pastry chefs of yore, but

Rochelle Canteen As the name might suggest, the food at Rochelle Canteen isn’t fussy. Rather, it’s rustic, maybe a bit rough round the edges, but most definitely the antithesis of the prettily arranged dishes people clamour for in Mayfair a short jaunt away. This is all part of Rochelle Canteen’s charm. There’s leek and potato soup. Stewed apples with meringue and cream. Venison pie. Oxtail casserole and mash. followed, and if you wanted a table, you’d have to book months in advance. Two years on, and while the phone isn’t as busy, the largely British menu of ‘this is how it’s meant to be’ food is still just as good. Set aside some time for the 11-course menu and it might be the best few hours you’ll spend in London. anglorestaurant.com
Poppie’s
Sweetings
If you insist on having one of Britain’s national dishes, seek out Poppies. Unlike most fish and chip shops so common on U.K. high streets, cod and haddock are sourced from the legendary Billingsgate fish market (that is to say, thoughtfully and sustainably), filleted by Poppie’s in-house fishmonger, and fried to order. It results in probably the tastiest and most environmentally conscious battered fish you’ll find in the capital. poppiesfishandchips.co.uk
At 130 years young, Sweetings is the oldest London restaurant specialising in seafood. It does so without the frills (would you like your Dover sole grilled or poached?), and is customarily followed up with classic national desserts like spotted dick and bread and butter pudding. A self-anointed ‘lunchtime institution’, don’t be surprised to be rubbing shoulders here with suited city workers sipping Black Velvet cocktails (Guinness with champagne) on a weekday afternoon. ■ sweetingsrestaurant.co.uk

THE MINI From George Harrison’s 1966 Radford Mini de Ville decorated in psychedelic style to its cinematic debut in The Italian Job, the Mini has been declared the “auto de facto face of the U.K.” Produced by the British Motor Corporation, it influenced a generation of car makers and was voted one of the most influential cars of the 20th century.
COLLAPSIBLE BABY BUGGY LONDON UNDERGROUND MAP In 1931, Harry Beck consolidated dozens of confusing maps into the iconic Tube map so beloved by visitors and locals today. Described as “a cross between an electric circuit diagram and a Mondrian painting”, the London Underground map is best known for revolutionising transport design.
They say necessity is the mother of invention. When Owen Maclaren’s daughter complained that she couldn’t take her baby’s pram on a plane, the retired aeronautical engineer and test pilot (who worked on the Spitfire – a British fighter aircraft used by the Royal Air Force and other Allied countries around World War II) used his expertise to create a lightweight buggy that could be folded up. In 1967, Maclaren started to manufacture the Maclaren B-01. Since then, the stylish pushchairs have been used by millions, including royals and celebrities, with the prototype making it into the Museum of Modern Art’s design collection.
CADBURY With that distinctive purple wrapper, curly font and “glass and a half” logo, Cadbury’s was the brand of chocolate that many grew up with. John Cadbury founded his legendary confectionary firm in 1824 in Birmingham, working with JS Fry & Sons (who invented the chocolate bar in 1847). Today, Cadbury is the second-largest confectionery brand in the world, after Mars.

WEDGEWOOD The next time you eat something off a stunning Wedgewood china plate, remember its inventor, Josiah Wedgewood. An established potter in Stoke-OnTrent, the earthenware he created in 1765 so impressed Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, she gave him official permission to call it “Queen’s Ware”.
CAT’S EYES In 1934, Yorkshire road contractor Percy Shaw was driving home one foggy night when the sudden flash from the eyes of a stray cat on the side of the road caused him to slow down to see where the road turned. It inspired him to create the reflective road safety device which, with an estimated 500 million cat’s eyes in the U.K., guides many drivers safely home.
DYSON VACUUM CLEANER First invented by British designer Hubert Cecil Booth in 1901, the humble vacuum cleaner was transformed by design icon James Dyson into a high-end household product. Confessing in the 1970s that conventional cleaners irritated him, 15 years and 5,000 prototypes later, he created the bagless vacuum cleaner, and the rest, as they say, is history.

WORLD WIDE WEB ATM MACHINES Scottish inventor John ShepherdBarron came up with the idea of a hole in the wall that dispensed cash, while sitting in the bath! He sold the idea to Barclays Bank, which installed the world’s first machine outside its Enfield branch in 1967. Today, there are over three million cash machines across the globe!
The “www” that you see in every URL stands for “world wide web”, invented by British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee. One of the most altruistic designers of modern time, Berners-Lee wanted an open platform that would allow everyone to share information across geographic and cultural boundaries. The web went live in 1991, with the first page explaining how to search and how to set up a site.
SODA WATER The next time you sip a refreshing mojito or a Tom Collins, remember to thank Joseph Priestley, who made the startling invention of soda water. Working in a university lab in Leeds in 1767, Priestley figured out a way to infuse water with carbon bubbles, thus creating fizzy water.

LONDON BRIDGE
BIG BEN Big Ben is the name of the largest of the clock’s five bells, which chimed for the first time in 1859. One of England’s most popular tourist attractions, the 13-tonne behemoth is housed in the 96-metre tall Clock Tower, renamed The Elizabeth Tower in 2012.
There have been many versions of London Bridge since the original Roman crossing – made from wood – was built in 50 AD. Today, the 269-metre bridge spanning the River Thames is one of the busiest in the city. The good news is it’s not falling down.
LOCH NESS Even if you don’t catch sight of the famous monster Nessie, which folklore claims resides in its icy depth, the sheer beauty of this freshwater loch is astounding. The second largest of the Scottish lochs, its great depth of 230 metres means it contains more freshwater than all the lakes in England and Wales combined.
THE ROYAL PAVILION When George, Prince of Wales, commissioned John Nash to transform a modest villa into a magnificent oriental palace, the “exotic mad house” that emerged stunned everyone. Years later, the opulent style and elaborate furnishings of the Pavilion still offer a sight to behold.
KEW GARDENS Arguably one of the most renowned botanical gardens, this UNESCO World Heritage site is home to millions of exotic plants and boasts the world’s largest greenhouse. From carnivorous cuttings to ornamental orchids, the Gardens, created in 1759, have made a significant contribution to the world of botany.

Technically in the U.K. rather than in Britain, you’ll forgive us when you visit this area of mind boggling beauty. The 60-million-year-old Giant’s Causeway is the aftermath of a volcanic activity, which created over 40,000 nearperfect hexagon-shaped basalt columns, interlocked like a giant puzzle. Nature or as the locals tell it, the result of a fight between the giants that lived in the area, you decide.
THE TOWER OF LONDON Built by William the Conqueror towards the end of 1066, the tower has over the centuries been used as a royal residence, an armoury, a treasury, a zoo, the Royal Mint, a records office and the scene of the execution of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII. Till today, it also houses the Crown Jewels, which includes 23,578 jewels, and the Imperial State Crown.
BATH This elegant town in South West England, with its neo-classical Palladian buildings, was founded by the Romans as a thermal spa because of the natural hot springs running under the ground. SPOTTED DICK It’s a name that only the Brits could love, but this classic – consisting of a steamed sponge made with suet, citrus zest and currants – is the ultimate comfort dish when served with lashings of hot custard. Beloved by Charles Dickens, it was mentioned in A Christmas Carol and dates back to the 1840s.
THE SUNDAY ROAST The roast became popular during the reign of King Henry VII in 1485. Consisting of roasted meat (traditionally beef), roasted potato and accompaniments such as Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, vegetables and gravy, it is the very heart of Sunday lunch. The Yeoman of the Guard are, till today, known as “beefeaters” because they were permitted to eat as much beef as they wanted from the king’s table!
TOAD IN THE HOLE
FISH & CHIPS Joseph Malin opened the first fish and chip shop in London in 1860, selling ‘‘fish fried in the Jewish fashion’’. Since then, cod or haddock, encased in golden crispy batter and eaten with hot crisps and mushy peas, has become a classic!
ETON MESS This gorgeous British dessert, first mentioned in 1893, is thought to come from the hallowed halls of Eton College, where a strawberry, meringue and cream pudding was dropped at an Eton vs Harrow cricket match, as it was carried into the dining hall. Rather than disappoint the hungry hordes, the messy contents were scooped off the floor and served, to great delight, and the Eton mess was born.
Despite its gruesome name, there are no toads, we promise – just delicious grilled sausages poking out of a panful of crispy Yorkshire batter, served with roasted onion gravy. Not one to miss!

Classic British Dishes
CRUMPETS Small griddle cakes made from an unsweetened batter of water or milk, flour and yeast, these circular discs with a flat top and a spongy texture are a breakfast staple. Little surface holes allow the butter to soak in, giving you a bite of luscious goodness!
CULLEN SKINK It’s not the most appetising name for a soup, but with heartening ingredients like comforting potatoes, smoked fish and lashings of cream, it’s just the thing for a winter meal. Taking its name from Cullen, a fishing town on the Moray Firth on the northeast coast of Scotland, you can bet it saw many a local through a cold night!

FULL ENGLISH HAGGIS An acquired taste and beloved of the Scottish poet Robbie Burns, who immortalised it in a poem in 1786, haggis is a robust and savoury meat pudding, made of sheep’s offal mixed with suet, oatmeal, onion and spices, then boiled in a bag. Traditionally served with mashed “neeps and tatties” (swedes and potatoes) and a dram (Scotch whisky), it is a favourite at Burns Night every year.
Sometimes called a “fry-up”, the full English breakfast dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was served late in the morning and had to sustain one till dinner. These days, it consists of fried eggs, sausages, crispy bacon, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, fried bread and often a slice of white or black pudding, washed down with a cup of tea. Look out for regional versions that add soda bread (Irish), tattie scone (Scottish), laverbread (Welsh) and hog pudding (Cornwall).
YORKSHIRE PUDDING It might be called a pudding, but a Yorkshire (dating as far back as 1737) is one of the heroes of Sunday lunch, and is meant to be eaten with gravy. Light, crispy and rising to lofty heights, the Yorkshire is traditionally made from a batter of flour, eggs and water, cooked in the fat from the dripping pan, while the meat roasts in the oven.

Tarikan Aura Britain

Istana Buckingham goingplacesmagazine.com | 66 | May 2018
Barangkali inilah istana paling terkenal di dunia. Istana Buckingham di London pernah digunakan sebagai mahkamah pada 1973. Istana ini juga pernah menjadi kediaman rasmi pertama untuk Ketua Negara, Ratu Victoria.
Windsor Castle Standing proudly over the town, Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, and luckily enough for those travelling to the U.K., it can be visited all year round. Founded by William the Conqueror during the 11th century, it has been home to 39 monarchs, many of whom are buried in the Chapel. The chapel itself has intricate stonework and beautiful stained-glass windows. The wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will take place there this month. Those visiting the castle will be impressed by its Grand Reception Room, with its large chandeliers. It was severely damaged during the great fire in 1992 but has been well restored. Another highlight is Queen Mary’s doll house, which was built for the Queen around 1921-1924. The house is now on display in a large glass case, allowing you to see its intricate attention to detail. The house even has working electricity!
It’s also worth visiting the grounds of the castle and walking the ‘Long Walk’ into Windsor Great Park. The Queen herself is a fan, often riding horses in the area.
The 16th-century palace, situated on the outskirts of London on the side of the River Thames, is most famous for its important resident: Henry VIII. The King would hold lavish banquets and decorate it with expensive art.
Hampton Court Palace
Setiap tahun, istana ini akan menampilkan pameran baharu seperti sambutan ulang tahun Putera Wales yang ke-70. Gaun perkahwinan Duchess of Cambridge juga pernah dipamerkan di sini.
It’s thought that the ghost of Henry’s wife Queen Jane haunts the palace, as does his fifth wife Catherine Howard. Jane died in childbirth, while Catherine was beheaded at the Tower of London.
Kediaman Osborne
Make sure to stop by Hampton Court’s royal chapel, which has been in continuous use for 450 years. The chapel itself is stunning with a bright blue ceiling painted with gold stars and Tudor-style decorations. Visitors on Sundays can attend church services, including Choral Evensong.

The castle often holds special exhibitions such as of the Queen’s clothing throughout the years.

Younger visitors will enjoy the gardens, which have their own giant maze, enough to keep them busy for hours. For two weeks every summer, the palace plays host to the Hampton Court Flower show, the world’s largest annual flower show.

For those visiting London in the summer, you can get a glimpse into what life at the palace might be like by booking an entrance ticket to the State Rooms. The rooms are used for banquets and speeches and are decorated with paintings by Rembrandt and Poussin. Every year, the palace adds a new exhibition, and this year’s will celebrate the 70th birthday of the Prince of Wales. Past exhibitions have included the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress. A visit to the palace finishes with a walk along the south side of the palace’s garden, where guests can stop for a cup of tea and a slice of cake.
Osborne House If you want to truly understand Queen Victoria, the current queen’s great-greatgrandmother, then you have to visit her holiday home on the Isle of Wight. Victoria is often associated with Britain’s industrial expansion and economic progress. She bought Osborne House as a holiday home in 1845 and died there on 22 January 1901. The house has been opened up for members of the public to gain an insight into what type of monarch she was and her relationship with her husband and children.

Nowadays Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh live in the royal apartments on the north side, while other members of the royal family live on the east side. During special events, the royals often make appearances on the palace’s balcony and wave to well-wishers standing on the Mall.
Visitors can wander around the Queen’s sitting room and see the balcony where Victoria and Albert used to sit together on summer evenings. The Indian collections are also worth a visit for a glimpse of the gifts that were handed to the monarch to celebrate her role as the Empress of India. Another highlight is Osborne beach, the Queen’s own private beach, where her children learnt to swim. Younger visitors will enjoy the children’s Swiss Cottage, where the young royal children would spend most of their time. They even had their own vegetable patch.
Tower of London Standing watch over the banks of the River Thames, the Tower of London has played an integral role in the capital’s history for over 900 years. Two of Henry VIII’s wives, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, were imprisoned and executed in the tower. Guy Fawkes was another famous name to be imprisoned and tortured at the tower after he attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605.

Nowadays, the Tower of London is home to the Crown Jewels, still used by the Queen during important national ceremonies. When visiting, make sure to keep a look out for the Imperial State Crown. Queen Elizabeth wore it during her coronation and wears it at the annual opening of parliament. The Imperial State Crown contains 2,868 diamonds, 11 sapphires, 11 emeralds, 269 pearls and four rubies. Younger visitors will be mesmerised by the performances on offer, one of which is a live historical reenactment of a battle to defend the tower. Visitors are asked to help the guards defend the castle from enemies. The tower is constantly guarded by the Queen’s warders, known as Beefeaters. For an extra special experience, apply to join the Beefeaters after dark as they lock up the tower in the Ceremony of the Keys.
St Andrew’ s Everyone likes a romantic story, and that is certainly the case for Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine Middleton. St Andrew’s in Scotland has become famously known as the place where the pair met in 2001 and began their romantic relationship. Following the announcement of the royal engagement, the university claimed it was the U.K.’s number one match-making university, with one in 10 students meeting their future partner at the school.
Aside from exploring the grounds of the university itself, St Andrew’s is a lovely town to explore. It’s a popular golfing spot with former U.S. President Barack Obama visiting the course shortly after leaving his job at the Oval Office. If golf isn’t your thing, the town’s stunning coastline and its own Botanical Gardens will surely beckon.
Kensington Palace The late Princess Diana and the Prince of Wales once lived in Kensington Palace, bringing up their two sons William and Harry. The princes still reside there today. William and Kate live in an apartment in the main building, while Harry resides in a cottage on the grounds. The palace is open to visitors all year round and currently has an exhibition on Diana and her fashion. It had been scheduled to finish earlier this year but was extended due to popularity. Visitors to Kensington Palace will also be able to see the state apartments and the beautiful King’s staircase, which is crammed full of 18thcentury paintings. Last year, a garden commemorating Princess Diana was added to the grounds. The White Garden contains over 12,000 Tulipa Diana flowers, 3,500 Forget-Me-Nots and thousands of other flowers. It’s a good spot for quiet reflection inside the grounds. Visitors can enter the garden for free and do not need a ticket for the palace. ■

The brothers Henry and Cyril Talalla might have been expected to find their feet in the successful business started by their father Hewage Talalla in the first decades of the 20th century, but the brothers chose a different path.
Cyril (centre) in Canada for training
goingplacesmagazine.com | 79 | January 2018
As the Second World War broke and Nazi Germany quickly gained ground in mainland Europe, Britain called out for pilots from the Commonwealth. Barely out of school, the brothers answered the call, enrolling in the Malayan Volunteer Air Force in Singapore. The pair already had some flying experience, having joined the Kuala Lumpur Flying Club. Newspaper reports from the time show that Cyril, the younger of the two, went on to become a cadet for the Royal Air Force in 1941, at the time a rare achievement for a non-European. His brother Henry followed a little later. They received further training in Canada before making their way to Britain at the height of the war. Both brothers were trained on Hurricane aircraft but soon graduated to the newest fighter jets of the time, the Spitfire and the Typhoon.
D-Day Exploits On 6 June 1944, Allied forces made up of American, British and Commonwealth troops began a combined naval, air and land assault on occupied France. The Allies landed on beaches on the Normandy coast, starting a long and eventually successful campaign to free Europe from German occupation. Henry and Cyril were part of this assault, providing aerial cover for Allied troops on the ground and sea. While Allied forces made good progress, making inroads into occupied territory, their successes came at a cost and the number of Allied casualties were high.
Death Battling to make further ground on 25 July that year, Henry’s Typhoon fighter plane was hit by fire from German tanks and went down over farmland between the towns of Airan and Moult in the Normandy region of northwestern France and was presumed lost.
May 2018_Malaysian Icon_Talalla Brothers04.indd 79
Henry Talalla
Cyril Talalla
Hearing the news, Cyril flew over the area to look for his brother, but it was a tough ask. In the landscape of war and destruction, finding the wreckage of a single aircraft was a forlorn hope. Members of the French Resistance later found Henry’s body and buried him close to the wreckage of the Typhoon. He was 24 years old. Despite the loss of his brother, Cyril continued to fly and by Christmas of 1944 had completed his last sortie over occupied territory. He spent the rest of the war outside active duty as a flight instructor. Over the course of the war he had been in active duty over Britain, the English Channel and occupied Europe. Cyril was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service and bravery.
Back home in Malaya, the Talalla clan had little news of Henry and Cyril. A news blackout prevailed as the country fell to the Japanese Imperial Army and lasted until the end of the war in 1945. Shocked at the news of Henry’s death, the resourceful Hewage Talalla set off to London to find out more about the whereabouts of his son’s body, eventually finding the spot where he was buried. Henry’s remains were later moved to the Banneville-la-Campagne British Cemetery. Cyril returned to Malaya in 1945, later becoming an air traffic controller before joining his father’s firm. He passed away in August 1973. He was 53. Henry and the 150 Typhoon pilots who lost their lives in the Normandy campaign are remembered in a memorial in the town of Noyers Bocage. In 1996, the motorway between the villages of Airan and Moult was officially named Route Henry Talalla in honour of the brave young man from Kuala Lumpur. ■ Editor’s Note: Part of the facts in the article were sourced from Victoria Institution’s webpage.

Enhancing Experience
goingplacesmagazine.com | 77 | May 2018
Malaysia Airlines has introduced three new digital initiatives to enhance passengers’ experience. MHguardian, MHfeedback and MHchat were designed to deliver the best of Malaysian Hospitality in line with its latest brand campaign, said Chief Commercial Officer Arved von zur Muehlen. The MHguardian mobile app, targeted for launch in the third quarter of 2018, will enable parents or guardians to track unaccompanied minors throughout their travels with the airline. This will also be extended to support elderly passengers or those requiring special assistance. Already available for download is the MHfeedback app, where travellers can immediately share anonymous feedback on their experience with the airline, which will be submitted, analysed and directed to the responsible service units. The third initiative, MHchat, is an interactive Facebook Messenger bot that empowers passengers to book, pay and retrieve their flight itinerary. This is achieved through the integration of artificial intelligence or AI, making it the first airline in Asia to allow users to do so through this platform.
Great Deals The Malaysia Airlines booth was abuzz with activity at the recent Matta Fair in Kuala Lumpur, as travellers sought out flight and travel deals to favourite destinations within the airline’s network. There were fun activities, games and prizes up for grabs, and visitors took the opportunity to be photographed with cabin crew members, as well as with the well-loved mascot, Pilot Parker.

Safety + service info
Cabin Luggage handling Passenger and crew safety onboard our flights is our highest priority. In compliance with the airline’s policy and in observing Occupational, Safety and Health Regulations requirements, cabin crew are no longer required to stow passengers’ hand luggages into the overhead stowage compartment. This is to minimise occupational hazard and ergonomic risks faced by cabin crew in the aircraft. Cabin crew on duty will, however, assist passengers travelling with infants, young passengers travelling alone, the elderly, and passengers with reduced mobility. Passengers who are fit and in good health must carry, stow and secure their own hand luggages on board. Hand luggage exceeding the 7kg weight limit is required to be checked in before boarding.
Portable Electronic Devices (PED) For safety reasons and in line with the Department of Civil Aviation guidelines, mobile phones and all PEDs must be switched off once aircraft doors are closed. Whilst cruising, devices placed in flight mode may be used. The devices must again be switched off during the approach for landing until the aircraft is parked at the terminal building. Devices transmitting strong signals must remain switched off throughout the flight, until disembarkation. The Captain may prohibit the use of devices that can interfere with the aircraft’s system.
Lithium batteries Lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries for portable electronic devices (PEDs), including medical devices must not exceed 2g for lithium metal batteries and 100Wh for lithium ion batteries. All spare batteries, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for PEDs must be carried in passengers’ carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. For PEDs containing non-spillable batteries, they must be 12V or less or 100Wh or less. A maximum of two spare batteries may be carried. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.
Electronic cigarettes Electronic cigarettes must be carried on one’s person or in carry-on baggage only. Recharging of the device in-flight is not permitted.
Zero tolerance of abuse We value courteousness. Any form of threat, verbal abuse or violence towards our staff will be taken seriously. We are committed to supporting anyone who has been the victim of an assault.

Outspoken Malaysian rapper Altimet’s album Amboi is playing onboard this month. The album’s title track of the same name came about from “observing Malaysians on social media”, he says. Read on to find out what else he has to say.
You’re arguably the pioneer of the rap/hip hop music scene in Malaysia. How did you get into the scene?
goingplacesmagazine.com | 92 | May 2018
I wouldn't say that I am the pioneer, there were others that came before me, and a few of them inspired me to start making music, the main one being Naughtius Maximus. Your hit single Amboi won Best Performance at Malaysia’s Anugerah Juara Lagu Ke-32. What do you think that says about the local music industry and how it has evolved over the years?
I think our audience appreciates a good show when they see one. Because of the Internet, they are more open to newer genres of music, and the fusion of genres. Hip-hop has a rich tradition of call and response in their performances; the Malay traditional dikir barat has that too, so we spliced the two together, and the viewers that night responded to it and voted.
Where do you get inspiration for your lyrics?
Malaysians. I try to write songs that speak to them and for them. I'm blessed because some of these songs resonate with them. One of my mentors summed it up as rap untuk rakyat (rap for the people). Who are some of your musical influences?
I'm trying to narrow it down to three: Jay Z, the late great Sudirman Haji Arshad, and Miles Davis. What’s next for Altimet?
I'd like to help other local musicians find their way in the entertainment industry. It’s a challenge to balance your passion and creativity with making a living and being a professional musician. Being Asian, there's always the stigma that you can’t make a good living being in the arts. I want to kill that stigma. I'm sorry if that sounds harsh but I really don’t like that kind of thinking.

Man of the Woods – Justin Timberlake Timberlake’s fifth studio album sees the artist experimenting with elements of R&B, funk, soul and Americana. With Man of the Woods, Timberlake takes a more personal approach, turning away from the norms of urban pop to reconnect with his southern roots. He also named the album after his son Silas, whose name means ‘of the forest’.

Italian Elegance The grand opening of the Max Mara Flagship Store at the Pavilion Shopping Mall by The Melium Group was an extravagant affair attended by some of Kuala Lumpur’s most stylish names. The city garden theme, replete with wildflowers that guests could take home, completed the launch of the Spring/Summer 2018 collection.
Boosting Capacity Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) has unveiled new KLIA Express and Transit trains with livery inspired by the exquisite motifs on a songket, a traditional Malay cloth used in formal occasions. The six new trains add to the fleet of 12 trains owned and operated by ERL.
Latest Devices In Stores Now A Piece Of France In Malaysia French skincare brand Caudalie opened its second standalone counter in Malaysia at the 1 Utama Shopping Centre recently. Inspired by the founders’ family vineyard, Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte, where they discovered the antioxidant powers of grape vines and grape seeds, the counter is a chic and modern interpretation of the brand’s roots in Bordeaux.
