FROM THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF

this festival is celebrated with a lot of activities all over the state. In Sarawak, the festival is called Hari Gawai and celebrated by the Dayaks on 1 June. I personally have enjoyed being part of these festivities while learning some of the local customs and would very much encourage you to visit during this time of the year to witness the celebrations yourself. May also marks an important month for all Muslims around the world as it is the holy month of Ramadan. Muslims will observe a period of fasting from dawn until sunset. This is a month of spiritual and self-reflection as well as for gatherings of families and loved ones. Travellers may visit Malaysia Airlines’ three Golden Lounges at KL International Airport for a special buka puasa (breaking of fast) feast. We will be serving the traditional bubur lambuk, a must-have dish during Ramadan. At Malaysia Airlines, we have been blessed with a busy year. We have been working hard on improving our services and building strategic partnerships for the benefit of our passengers. We have just reinstated our daily flights into Kochi, Kerala on 1 April. goingplacesmagazine.com | 8 | May 2019

We have also mounted extra flights to Melbourne, Osaka, Colombo, Bali and Bangkok from now until September 2019 to meet the increased demand during this period. We have recently upgauged our services to Perth and Mumbai with the larger A330-200 aircraft, providing customers better comfort.

We are very proud, as the national airline of Malaysia, to pledge our support to local athletes. As the official airline partner, we will be transporting them to various sporting events, including the Manila SEA Games 2019 in the Philippines, Tokyo 2020 Olympics in Japan, Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou, China and Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, United Kingdom. This is on top of our commitment to the country’s senior and junior football teams, Harimau Malaya and Harimau Muda.

Dear Guests, May is a month full of colourful festivities in multi-cultural Malaysia. Buddhists worldwide celebrate Wesak Day and in Malaysia, the celebration begins at dawn when devotees gather at various temples nationwide to give thanks. No matter what religion, I believe it is important to take time to reflect and give thanks for all our blessings. Over in East Malaysia, Sabahans and Sarawakians also give thanks by celebrating the end of the rice planting and the beginning of the harvest season. Called Tadau Kaamatan in Sabah and celebrated by the Kadazan ethnic community,

Just like the athletes, Malaysia Airlines is the nation’s flag-bearer across the world. These partnerships are our small contribution to the development of sports for the country and reiterate our commitment towards building the nation. Sports and the support for our athletes transcend race, religion and cultural differences and we are proud to be the catalyst for national unity. I wish you a great journey with Malaysia Airlines always and a wonderful visit to or stopover in Malaysia. Please sit back, relax and enjoy our Malaysian Hospitality. ■

EDITOR’S NOTE

Ramadan is expected to begin on 6 May in Malaysia and end on 4 June. During this time, Muslims the world over will fast from sunrise to sundown, and that means abstaining not just from food and drink but from negative speech and thoughts and emotions such as anger, hatred and impatience. Instead, it is a time of reflection and repentance, increased prayers and acts of charity and cultivating other good deeds. Shaistha’s article on pages 38-40, based on life in Saudi Arabia, makes for insightful reading. The kingdom’s second largest city, Jeddah, is most famous as the gateway to Mecca and Medina, the two holiest places of Islam. But that reputation has evolved. The city that is home to the largest port on the Red Sea is now ranked as one of the most innovative in Saudi Arabia, with luxurious shopping malls, a growing arts hub and creative eateries juxtaposed against its beloved historical town of Al-Balad. Our story on this unique city is on pages 34-37.

Julie Goh Editor

It occurred to me recently that this is my sixth note written in the holy month of Ramadan, and it may very well be my last. Who knows, but one thing is for sure; it reinforces what I have known at the back of mind, just how swiftly time has flown by. And that’s why it’s timely to take a moment out of our busy lives to sit back and ponder how far we have come and how much time we have left, so that maybe it’s not too late to do something that makes us truly happy if we act now.

Closer to home, there is an effort to popularise ulam, a traditional Malaysian salad of plants and leaves foraged from the wild. Leading the charge to make ulam trendy is Frenchman Dr Eric Olmedo, who will conduct a two-year research into the salad, which he says will help curb obesity and reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases, culminating in an ulam school. We have nothing but praise for Dr Olmedo (who is married to a Malaysian and got his first taste of the raw bunches 15 years ago) and wish him luck. Then, if you have not had a taste of fine Malay heritage cuisine, you must make it to Siti Li Dining in Kuala Lumpur. It’s one of the most authentic Malay restaurants in the country and a true labour of love for Siti Kader and Shareen Ramli, its two lovely founders. How they met and came to set up this gorgeous space in the affluent suburb of Damansara Heights is as genuine as the food they serve. Don’t miss their special buffet from 9 May till 3 June. To all Muslims, I wish you a blessed Ramadan. ■

Increasingly, I’m being told to put myself first above others, because how else can we make others happy if we’re not being taken care of from within? How can we make others happy when we ourselves are sad or unfulfilled? It would be like trying to draw from an empty barrel that has nothing to give. Shaistha Khan writes in this month’s issue that Ramadan is not just about abstaining from food and drink during daylight but the observation of the spiritual side of Islam’s holiest month. “For Muslims, Ramadan serves as a reminder or a speedbreaker in a fast-paced life when one tends to lose sight of the bigger picture … (it) is a month of reflection, spiritual growth and renewed gratitude for God’s blessing.” I couldn’t agree more.

THE MAIL ROOM

Saya agak kecewa. Tahniah Team Going Places! I’m writing this onboard flight MH2711, bound for my work city Kuala Lumpur from my lovely hometown Sandakan. I have been a frequent flier with Malaysia Airlines, and this trip is an unplanned one to bid goodbye to one of my loveliest family members, who unfortunately just left me. Come to think of it, Malaysia Airlines has been flying me so much to various destinations for different purposes and occasions, be it to cheerful events, vacations or sad homecomings such as the current one. Malaysia Airlines also flew me to Kuala Lumpur to report myself as a University Malaya first-year student 14 years ago, not forgetting my first flying experience as a kid from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu. Keep up the good work you are doing to rebrand yourself despite the competition in the aviation industry as I can see the tremendous improvements you have made. Fly more Malaysians safely and comfortably to their various destinations to pursue their dreams, to their vacations or to reunite them with their family because as an airline, you carry not only passengers and their personal belongings, but their emotions during the flight as well. Malaysia Airlines has always been my weekend mode of transportation, commuting from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu or Johor Bahru and other places, be it for work or leisure. I must say there have been a lot of improvements over the years and crew service is always superb. Upholding the Malaysian Hospitality tagline, they have been warm and hospitable. What I like the most is the amazing IFE content. It is up to date and I never have to go to a cinema again, knowing that it will be playing onboard soon. And not forgetting, Going Places looks and feels like a high-end social magazine, covering food, culture and travel articles, and corporate insights. The February issue was awesome! I got to understand the Lunar New Year culture and tradition better. The 50-minute flight to Johor was well spent reading the articles. Once again, kudos Malaysia Airlines and Going Places! May you soar the sky with victory!

Barking Up The Right Tree Going vegetarian doesn’t have to be a bland affair, particularly at Sydney’s Paperbark. The restaurant may be less than a year old, but it has already earned rave reviews among Sydney-siders (including carnivorous ones) for its inventive take on plant-based cuisine that won’t look out of place in a fine-dining restaurant. While you won’t find any meat in Chef Joey Astorga’s kitchen, the dishes are no less tasty or imaginative. Among the standouts are Iggy's bread and great oil; paperbark-smoked leek with kipfler potato and finger lime; and hazelnut pâté with roasted beetroot. For dessert, opt for the rhubarb and lemon myrtle mousse with strawberry and eucalyptus sorbet or miso roasted banana with chocolate and peanut butter mousse. paperbarkrestaurant.com

Not Impossible

It is typically difficult to find good halal dim sum anywhere, but for a limited time only, find it at One World Hotel’s Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant in Petaling Jaya. Chef Jordan Chin and his team have tapped into their culinary creativity to craft interesting new dim sum creations that still hit the mark when it comes to taste. In addition to core dim sum items such as the Crystal Shrimp Dumpling (har gow) and Pan-Fried Shanghai Dumpling (guo tie), unique combinations such as the Oven Baked Cheese Tart with Salmon are must-try items. Also available is Egg Noodles with Fresh Water Prawn, Ginger and Spring Onion, an aesthetic take on sang har meen with the crispy noodles shaped like a bird’s nest. The dim sum promotion is available until the end of this month, with seven-course set menus priced from USD22 (RM88 nett) to USD32 (RM128 nett).

Will the future be meatless? Decide for yourself in Singapore, where you’ll find Impossible Foods’ plant-based “meat” products served at eight partner restaurants, including Park Bench Deli, Bread Street Kitchen and Prive Orchard. What makes this different from your generic soy burger patties is the magic ingredient, “heme” – a combination of soy protein and a genetically engineered yeast that makes it look and feel like meat. Each partner restaurant will use the Impossible Meat patty as a meat substitute in a variety of dishes. At Park Bench Deli, you’ll find it in the Impossible Patty Melt, while at Potato Head Singapore and Three Buns Quayside, you’ll find it in the The Impossible Dream and Impossible Chedda burgers. And at Prive Orchard, it’s used to make the Lucy Impossible Meatball Spaghetti and Impossible Satay Sliders. Celebrity restaurants aren’t missing out on this trend, with Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen serving it on the Impossible Flatbread pizza; Wolfgang Puck’s Cut using it for the Impossible Slider; and Adrift by David Myers rolling it up in the Impossible Sausage Roll.

More Than Just Coffee

The guys who started the gourmet burger trend in Kuala Lumpur with myBurgerLab have another hit on their hands with myPizzaLab. Found in Petaling Jaya’s Sea Park neighbourhood, the pizza joint serves more than the usual quattro formaggio and margheritas – so pizza purists will do well to stay away. But for the rest, there is a range of eclectic 10-inch pizza selections that include Huat The Duck (smoked duck, torched mandarin oranges, onion jam); The Dugong (wakame seaweed, streaky beef, Kewpie sesame sauce, onion jam); Popeye The Sailorman (creamed spinach, blue cheese, pepper mayo, roasted garlic paste and lemon juice) and Cempedak Boba Pizza (boba balls, Cempedak paste and mozzarella). The menu changes from time to time, so check in often. Pre-ordering and opting for delivery services are highly recommended, unless you love a long queue.

You might not think of Starbucks as a travel destination unless you’re talking about their newest flagship store in Tokyo. Found in Nakameguro by the cherry blossom-lined Meguro River, this monument to coffee houses 1,200 square metres of space over four floors and is the biggest Starbucks in the world. On the first floor is Milanese bakery Princi, serving up cronuts and focaccia pizza, while on the second is the Teavana tea room, serving more than 20 brew varieties. The third floor houses the Arriviamo cocktail bar, which serves speciality cocktails like the Nakameguro Espresso Martini (chestnut liqueur, crème de cacao and espresso) and Coffee Crusta (brandy, citrus, coffee and cherry liqueur). AMU Inspiration Lounge, a community space that will occasionally host workshops featuring “change-makers” and creative thinkers from Japan, is on the top floor. The roastery is set to offer more than 100 coffee and tea options, so know what you want before getting stuck at the order counter. Expect the balcony seats to be filled during Sakura season, so make sure you get there early.

Precious China The NGV International in Melbourne launches its Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series this month, kicking off with a dual show celebrating Chinese culture and art of past and present. Terracotta Warriors: Guardians Of Immortality comprises a large-scale installation of Qin Emperor’s Terracotta Warriors (221–207 BCE) and is presented in parallel with an exhibition from contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang, titled The Transient Landscape. Discovered in 1974 in China’s Shaanxi province, thousands of terracotta figures poised for battle were unearthed in the tomb of China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang Di. The Terracotta Warriors are regarded as one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century and sometimes referred to as the eighth wonder of the world. The NGV exhibition will feature eight of these incredibly preserved statues alongside a vast display of more than 150 ancient Chinese art and design treasures. Cai’s parallel exhibition is equally breath-taking and showcases China’s contemporary culture and enduring traditions. Wimbledon isn’t only famous for its tennis tournament; this London hotspot is also the location of the Wimbledon Art Fair. In support of London’s creative community, the event is situated in the Wimbledon Art Studios, a private studio complex used by some 290 artists and designers. Visitors to the Wimbledon Art Fair are given access to these studios, affording them the chance to meet with creators and buy directly from them. The fair offers an insightful peek into the daily lives of artists and the work that goes into their finished products. All kinds of affordable art are on display here, from bespoke clothing to ceramics and paintings. If you’re in the city, be sure to visit Wimbledon Art Fair, browse the wares and be inspired by the resident talent.

The Musée National Jean-Jacques Henner in Paris is a venue dedicated to the works and influences of 19th-century French painter Jean-Jacques Henner. This month is your last chance to catch temporary exhibition Roux! (Red Hair!), which explores his fascination with the fiery hair colour. Henner is known for his sensuous depictions of nymphs and naiads, as well as his portraiture. The artist’s first red-haired woman appeared as a flutist in Idylle, which was created in 1872, and since then, the hair colour has played a crucial role in his portraits and other scenic paintings. The exhibition presents a variety of the artist’s redhead works, seeking to explain how the colour was perceived by 19th-century French society and how it’s viewed today.

Vincent’s Vision In 1873, a young Vincent Van Gogh moved to London and worked as an art dealer. During his time in the city, he fell in love with authors such as Charles Dickens and George Eliot and was inspired by the exhibitions he saw by the likes of Constable and Millais. The time he spent in London had a significant impact on the art of his later years. The ‘EY Exhibition: Van Gogh and Britain’ at the Tate Britain gathers some 45 of the Dutch painter’s most celebrated pieces, including the very rarely lent Sunflowers masterpiece from 1888, and explores how Britain and the experiences he had there influenced their creation. The show also includes works from artists who were greatly inspired by Van Gogh, such as Francis Bacon, David Bomberg and a group of British post-impressionists known as the Camden Town Painters.

Lost In Time And Space The Moco Museum in Amsterdam is a boutique establishment that strives to present cutting-edge, contemporary and modernist art. This month, the venue hosts Connecting Time, a solo show from New York-based artist Daniel Arsham. The mixed-media retrospective gathers work from Arsham’s vast career, including installations such as his eye-catching Amethyst Ball Cavern and Eroded Wall Paper Room. On display also is a new interactive installation created especially for Moco Museum, titled Calcified Room. The artist’s fascination with architecture and pop culture is evident; in his work, he seeks to turn conventions on their head, presenting the viewer with a surreal take on reality, in which objects and spaces feel familiar but look totally different.

MY GUIDE | Fuzhou, China

Skyscraper City

Behind its façade of a high-rise, industrial city, China’s Fuzhou in Fujian province hides hidden gems and a fascinating history. Words Charles Young | Illustration Maggie Li | Art Direction Euric Liew

Downtown Mountains While most of the centre of this city of seven million people is made up of skyscrapers and shiny new malls, there are two islands of tradition and trees right at its heart. Located behind the statue of Chairman Mao at the north side of the central Wuyi Square are the tranquil, wooded slopes of Yu Shan. From the beautifully restored Qing-dynasty White Pagoda at its base, winding paths lead up through the trees to the peak of this 58-metre-high hill park past tiny Taoist and Buddhist temples and halls. It’s also a great place to

May 2019_MY Guide.indd 28

experience Chinese culture, and its greenery and peaceful atmosphere bring locals here to exercise, perform traditional music, practise Tai Chi and play Chinese chess. Just a few blocks west, you can climb the second downtown mountain of Wu Shan. Somewhat more developed for tourists and pilgrims as there are many Taoist temples located here, this slightly higher peak is far more landscaped than Yu Shan. Don’t miss the Song-dynasty Black Pagoda here, often called the “Leaning Tower of Fuzhou”, and now supported

by bamboo struts as it mimics its more famous cousin in Pisa.

Hidden History The best place to learn about local history is the Fujian Museum within the Xi Hu Park, though remember to get the English audio guide as many exhibits aren’t captioned in English. Here you can learn of Zheng He, the most famous Chinese explorer of all time, whose home port was Fuzhou. Born a Muslim in landlocked Yunnan during the early Ming Dynasty, he was made a eunuch as a child but went on

to become a mariner, diplomat, fleet admiral and, most famously, an explorer. At the beginning of the 15th century, he led seven naval expeditions that took him to Borneo, Java, India, Sri Lanka, Arabia and the Horn of Africa. The other notable from Fuzhou is Lin Zexu, the Qing-dynasty official whose opposition to foreign opium

thousand-year-old banyan tree. With more than 2,500 species of trees from around the world, it is never short on colour, and all the trees make it a natural “oxygen bar”, while its geography gives it a microclimate that is milder in winter and cooler in summer than the city below.

imports and burning of thousands of chests of the drug sparked the first Opium War with European powers. He is also commemorated in the attractive complex of finely decorated halls and courtyards of the Lin Zexu Memorial Hall, just north of Wu Shan, where you can learn about this historically important national hero.

Pools Of Nature There are several large parks in the centre of the city that provide relief from the city’s traffic and noise. The most famous is at Xi Hu, or West Lake Park, one of the oldest lake parks in China, whose landscape of temples, pagodas and pavilions nestling amid the willows by the water was laid out during the Qing dynasty. Its meandering paths, stone bridges and causeways certainly deserve a few hours of wandering, as within the park, you’ll also find museums and art galleries, including the Fujian Museum, which has a fine dinosaur exhibition in its Natural History Building. Also popular with kids is Panda World, a small group of enclosures southwest of the lake, where you can see both Great and the smaller Red Pandas; it is one of the best places to observe the shy animals, especially if you go mid-week when there are few other visitors. Somewhat newer is the enormous riverside Minjiang Park that stretches for

May 2019_MY Guide.indd 29

over three kilometres either side of the Minjiang North Port River, with the north bank featuring a well-developed chain of zones with beaches, gardens and outdoor exhibits such as the two-kilometrelong gallery that charts the history of Fuzhou using cameo statues. It’s also immensely popular with locals who come here to exercise, dance and fly kites, thanks to the breezes with which the area is blessed, offering an escape from the heat of the city during hot summers. The south bank of the park is far less developed and much more peaceful, with most of the area allowed to remain in its natural forested state with few artificial landscapes and fewer visitors.

National Gems Just eight kilometres east of downtown, Gu Shan, or Drum Hill, is probably the most famous

tourist site in Fuzhou. Named after the drum-shaped rock formations near its 925-metre-high peak, it is a well-established Buddhist holy place. More than 2,000 rock steps lead up to the top, flanked by ancient stone inscriptions as the path passes by verdant tea plantations, picturesque waterfalls, legendary caves, sprawling ancient trees and seven neat Buddhist pavilions. At the top, you can find the grand complex of Yongquan Temple, whose colourful, ornate buildings once housed more than a thousand monks. The views from the top are, of course, superb and can also be enjoyed by going up on the spectacular cable car ride. Located in the northern suburbs of the city, the Fuzhou National Forest Park is a world away, with its tranquil wooded hills interspersed with babbling streams, lakes and pools, one of which features a sprawling

For souvenir hunters, the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys district is the heavily restored historical heart of the city that flanks Nanhou Street, lined by shops selling famous local crafts, such as the colourful (and light) Fujian bodiless lacquerware or fine Shoushan alabaster carvings, most usually made into “chops” (stamps), though you can buy small statues as well. There are hundreds of well-maintained Tang and Song dynasty residences, many of which can be entered, while some are restaurants where you can try local delicacies. Fuzhou cuisine is famous for seafood dishes such yu wan fishball soup, though the sweet lichi meat is also popular. For more modern tastes, try the splendid Wanda Plaza on Aofeng Road, which offers a wide range of international-brand shops and restaurants.

Within Striking Distance Just an hour away by train, Quanzhou is another ancient port city, featuring many splendid temples, as well as one of the oldest and largest (though now ruined) mosques in China. Just south, Xiamen is immensely popular with tourists due to its well-preserved 19th-century French colonial buildings on Gulangyu Island and the chance to peer at Taiwan through binoculars. Fujian’s most popular scenic area, Wuyi Shan, lies four to five hours north of Fuzhou by train; as well as being the home of Oolong tea, it offers many fine trails amid its 36 peaks. ■

Shopping Old & New

Useful Tips: • Fuzhou in Chinese means “a city with good luck”. • Only the first of the city’s under-construction metro lines is open, though it does usefully connect both the main railway stations, Fuzhou and Fuzhou South.

• Buses are very crowded in Fuzhou and stop running at 10 p.m. Taxis are hard to get and often overcharge, especially at night. • Fuzhou has a typical subtropical monsoon climate, where summers are long and

hot, with high rainfall and humidity, and winters are short, dry and cool. • The Fuzhou Changle International Airport is around 50 kilometres east of the city, with shuttle buses or taxis the only ways to get into town.

How did you get into fashion?

I have always been that kid who loved drawing, and somehow it developed into drawing female figures and silhouettes, which then started my passion for fashion in high school. I took fine arts for my foundation and pursued fashion for my diploma and degree in London. The fashion industry is a cutthroat world. How do you differentiate yourself from the other local designers? From where do you draw your inspiration?

I started off like any new designers returning from London with no business knowledge. We just did what we wanted to, but with years of experience now, I have learned that we need to be balanced. I learned to develop my signature technique, which is draping, but slowly tweaked it to be subtle so that it can sell. My inspiration usually comes from developing shapes from new materials that we find or even colours that can spark excitement in me. Most importantly, I will always stick to my shapes to define our mark for the brand.

as part of the platform. Secondly, we had to understand running the seasons in Malaysia. I learned how we are mostly based on bespoke, so I embraced it and it became our bread and butter, which helped us grow and expand to ready-to-wear (RTW). It is not glamorous, aside from attending events and that final walk after the collection, as it takes six months to prepare in between completing clients’ orders and

I started off wanting to do RTW as that is what I was taught in London, but it is a different market here in Malaysia. I really doubted myself in bridal, but I did my first bride and started understanding how bridalwear is all about details and understanding the bride too. I used that as a medium to learn what our Malaysian market wants for the other collections. Once the brand grew, I finally went for RTW again. Both have different ways of approaching and preparing for it. I’m a firm believer of the saying ‘when the time is right, it will happen’. What is the biggest mistake that brides tend to make when deciding on their wedding gowns or looks? Should they adopt the “less is more” approach?

I always believe in less is more and would advise that brides pictured in magazines may not look

goingplacesmagazine.com | 31 | May 2019

You have made a name for yourself in the bridalwear industry. How did this come about?

4

How did you feel when you started your own line? Were you afraid?

Very afraid, as we started with very little budget and with no business background, but I knew it was now or never. So, I took that leap of faith. What are some of the challenges you face as a fashion designer in Malaysia? It’s not as glamorous as it seems, is it?

The biggest challenge we had to go through when we first started was to establish the brand. At that time, there was no social media

like that when the gown is on you. It is best to keep it elegant as you would want to look back at your wedding pictures later and not cringe! What is your aspiration as a fashion designer? What do you hope to achieve?

To be able to expand RTW and maintain our quality. I am very fussy in making sure that regardless of the price, I want to offer goodquality fashionwear for our clients. I want to explore different collections in RTW and grow our in-house studio for bespoke fashion. Tell us about your biggest achievement so far. Is there a specific person you owe your success to?

My biggest achievement will always be that time we shot our bridal campaign in Budapest, Hungary, as it was an amazing experience. There have been many people who have been supportive of me throughout my journey, but my biggest supporter would be my mother. I am very blessed to have a mother who trusts that I am able to carve my own path, and she has always been open to me making my own decisions in life and career. How do you style yourself? What kind of wear can we find you in daily?

I am a very practical dresser, in my denim and trainers unless I have appointments or meetings. In view of Eid celebrations in June, can you tell us about Raya fashion through the years? How has it evolved and what can we expect to see this year?

The biggest season for Malaysia is our Raya season. It has been a good challenge for all local brands to come up with their own Raya collection. With campaign shoots and fashion

May 2019_InProfile.indd 32

shows, it has become the most exciting and intense part of the year. For our brand, we usually come up with two Raya collections, which are the Lebaran Luxe (bespoke) for clients who want more exclusive designs that would be made to measure and the Lebaran RTW (under the ‘NH by Nurita Harith’ brand), which would be sold via the Zalora online platform, at Robinsons Kuala Lumpur at Shoppes at Four Seasons Place and ShoesShoesShoes. The style for our main line this year has more detailed work on beadwork, but the silhouette is classic, with a mix of draping to elevate the collection. Whereas in RTW, we are finally having prints injected into the collection. We will still have the plain customised colours with draping and lace

as part of the main collection because we know that is what our ladies love from the brand, but we will have prints of peonies injected into the design. For a touch of femininity, I wanted the layering petals of the peonies highlighted in different subtle shades and placed uniquely in each design. The draping technique this time is elevated to create a unique touch for the collection. What is the greatest life advice you have received and what advice would you give to young designers hoping to make it in the industry?

Work hard and embrace both good and bad experiences as the tool to move forward. ■

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Many people would associate tourism in Saudi Arabia to religious pilgrimages, and though they wouldn’t be wrong, the leisure tourism sector has seen healthy growth in recent years. This is thanks to Saudi Arabia’s Council of Ministers relaxing the rules on tourist visas. In 2012, approximately 14.3 million people visited the country, but after the announcement in 2013 of tourist visas being issued for the first time, today’s annual statistics for international tourists total an average of 19 million. One of the main attractions is Jeddah.

Nickname One of Jeddah’s main attractions is its waterfront. It served as an important seaport for centuries and was always so full of life that it earned the sobriquet, ‘Bride of the Red Sea’. To this day, the corniche remains an important aspect of life for the locals. Families and friends are in regular attendance, particularly in the evenings when it comes alive with barbecues and sea breeze strolls. In 2017, the waterfront received a huge makeover and is now home to roughly 730,000 square metres of beaches, restaurants, parks, resorts and mosques. And since concerts have now been legalised in Saudi Arabia, there are plenty of them along with festivals nearly every weekend.

The Floating Mosque Fatima Al Zahra Mosque attracts millions of visitors every year. Erected on pillars deeply rooted underwater, it gives the impression that this gorgeous bone-white mosque is floating on the sea. It’s open to the public and used daily for prayers. Tourists flock here to marvel at the architectural structure and to take photos of its beauty.

In 2012, approximately 14.3 million people visited the country, but after the announcement in 2013 of tourist visas being issued for the first time, today’s annual statistics for international tourists total an average of 19 million.

The King’s Fountain King Fahd’s Fountain – also known as Jeddah Fountain – is an iconic monument that can be seen from most places in the city. That’s because it towers up 312 metres at speeds of 375 kilometres per hour! It’s been there for three decades, in honour of King Fahd, who ruled from 1982 until 2005 and is one of 45 sons of Saudi founder Ibn Saud. At night, the fountain looks beautiful as it’s illuminated with hundreds of lights.

Art Scene The art scene in Jeddah is booming, and the Athr Gallery is one of the best places to start. It’s one of the city’s leading contemporary art spaces and often hosts exhibitions promoting up-andcoming local artists. Photographs, montages, ink drawings, scripture and abstract work are regularly displayed, acting as the perfect platform for artists and a fantastic way to get acquainted with their work.

Eat At Albaik It might be a fast food chain, but Albaik is loved by the locals. Most branches can be found in Jeddah, so it’s a must-try dining experience. The menu evolves regularly to keep up with demand, but the staple of the menu is always

May 2019_Explore Jeddah03.indd 36

the most popular order – fried chicken with Albaik’s special garlic sauce. It’s as simple as that, but you’ll understand why it’s ordered so much by locals and visitors alike. Most branches provide dining areas just for men, so a lot of people choose the takeaway option. The order works out to roughly USD4 (RM16), which is very affordable for such a hearty meal.

Other Local Food Options Jeddah might be home to great restaurants, but the real foodie experience comes from its street food. Falafel and shawarma wraps are found on almost every commercial street, and since sandwiches are an important part of the Middle Eastern diet, they really are not to be missed. Every shop will have its own style of falafel and its own flavour when it comes to lamb or chicken shawarma, so you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Café Culture For a taste of some of the best food and coffee, and a chance to really mingle with the locals, make a pit-stop in one of the popular cafés. These include Brew92 and Medd. Jeddah has a strong café culture and its competitive cafés often go one step further in outdoing their rivals. Brew92 arguably serves the best coffee, with the cold brew a popular option on particularly hot

days. Medd supports local artists by providing them a medium in which to display their talents.

How To Escape The Heat The country’s heat can be relentless, especially during summer, so the best way to escape the outdoors is to go shopping. Air-conditioned malls throughout Jeddah have become an integral part of the culture. Recognising this trend, many malls now provide more than just shopping. Take the Red Sea Mall, for example. Besides offering retail therapy through boutique stores, it also features a history section that’s home to numerous paintings of historical Saudi figures.

Seventh-Century Visit Al-Balad translates to ‘the town’ and is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Jeddah. It was founded in the seventh century and acted as the main sea port of the region. To this day, remarkably, most of the houses and streets are unchanged, which makes a visit feel like you’re stepping back in time. Located near the entrance to Souq al-Alawi, the traditional coral and wood houses are a must-see.

n Dress should be conservative.

Men should wear long pants and sleeved shirts, while women should wear loose trousers or skirts, longsleeved shirts and a traditional abaya on top. It isn’t always necessary for a foreign woman to cover her hair, but it can make the travel more comfortable. n The best transportation is car.

You can hire a car (they drive on the right side of the road) since most major international car hire agencies operate in Saudi Arabia. You do need to be at least 25 years old though. The road network is constantly being upgraded and expanded, so routes are of the highest standard. Metered taxi services are also available, as are buses for a more affordable option.

As the last rays of the sun fade over the Arabian horizon, there is a flurry of activity – traffic snarls are particularly bad, cars are honking away, and men are trying to rush home. After 15 hours of fasting in scorching temperatures, emotions run high and people can get irritable. Yet, amid all this chaos, you will see volunteers handing out food packages – dates, a sandwich and a bottle of water – to those stuck in traffic jams or stranded on the road. You will also see local mosques open their doors and offer a meal to those who are lonely or less fortunate. You

will see womenfolk lovingly prepare the family’s favourite meal, sharing generously with their neighbours. In these moments of benevolence and compassion, you can witness the true essence of Ramadan. At last, the Magrib adhan (evening call to prayer) echoes from minarets around Saudi Arabia. Saying a quick prayer of thanks, people around the country break their fast with a meal called iftar. Following the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Muslims first

break their fast with dates and water. Traditional iftar staples in Saudi Arabia are sambosak (samosa), soup, salad, fruit, laban (buttermilk) and lugaimat (fried dumplings coated in a sugar syrup) Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, a lunar calendar that falls behind the Gregorian calendar by 11 days every year. Throughout the month, Muslims all over the world fast from sunrise to sundown. The fast begins with a pre-dawn meal called suhoor, during which they eat a hearty meal for sustenance. Traditional suhoor staples in Saudi Arabia are jareesh (rice porridge), oatmeal or breakfast eggs and toast.

May 2019_Explore Ramadan.indd 39

During the day, one abstains from food, drink, sexual intercourse, anger, vile speech and behaviour, and engages in increased prayers, supplications and acts of charity. For Muslims, Ramadan serves as a reminder or a ‘speed breaker’ in a fast-paced life, when one tends to lose sight of the bigger picture. The month-long practice of fasting inculcates resistance and self-control when faced with temptation. It also makes one aware of the suffering of the hungry and deprived, and how to help the neighbourhood and community. More than just about abstaining from food and drink, Ramadan is a month of reflection, spiritual growth and renewed gratitude for God’s blessings. Although there are different cultural traditions associated with the month, Ramadan across the world is marked by a sense of community and kinship – meeting fellow worshippers five times a day at the local mosque, eating at communal meals, conducting community charity drives and inviting each other to celebrations. In international communities, it is common to see non-Muslims fast during Ramadan in solidarity

with Muslims, reap the benefits of intermittent fasting, cultivate the desirable qualities of restraint and piety, or experience Ramadan in its entirety. Fasting is one of the five pillars of faith in Islam, meaning it becomes mandatory for every Muslim once they reach puberty, with some exceptions, such as for those who are ill, pregnant and others. The holy book for Muslims, the Quran, was revealed to Prophet Muhammad during the month of Ramadan. The first revelation came in 610 AD on one of the last 10 days of the calendar month. The 114-chapter book was revealed over a period of 23 years and in its entirety, it serves as a guide for Muslims. The last 10 days of Ramadan hold special significance – on one of these nights, all past sins are forgiven, a decree on one’s destiny is written, and all supplications are accepted. In the pursuit of Laylat al-Qadr (Night of Decree), worshippers strive harder by staying up all night, increasing prayers and supplications, and reciting the Quran. Ramadan finishes on the 29th or 30th day, when the crescent moon of the next month (Shawwal) is sighted. Once it is publicly announced, preparations commence for the Eid-al-Fitr

May 2019_Explore Ramadan.indd 40

celebration. In Saudi Arabia, Eid-al-Fitr is a threeday holiday. On the day of Eid, rituals include eating a date before one heads to the mosque, attending the morning prayer and sermon, and giving away a mandatory amount of charity. After the prayer, Muslims embrace and greet each other with Eid Saeed (Happy Eid) or Eid Mubarak (Wishing you a blessed Eid). One may reply with kul’am wa antum bi khair (May I find you well and in good health every year). Festivities during the day and following days may include visiting the extended family, meeting friends, hosting parties, and giving small sums of money and gifts to children and

each other. Candies and toys are handed out to children in mosques; shops and streets are decked with lights and colourful streamers; neighbourhoods smell of sweet incense and aromatic food; everyone is dressed in their best attire, especially for the occasion. After a month of fasting for the body and soul, the Eid feast celebrates the gratitude and blessings of yet another Ramadan. ■

It smelled heavenly, like a mix of lemon and citronella, as delicate as fine essential oils. The scent came from a pale green leaf of the lemon basil, crushed to release its aroma into the dank market air. Malaysia’s ulam, or foraged wild greens, are as delectable a treat to the nose as to the palate. Mandy Leong was deftly picking out a dozen varieties of these zesty greens at the market stall for her signature rainbow nasi ulam (ulam rainbow rice). “It always feels like an aromatherapy session when I’m preparing the dish,” said Leong, a home chef who teaches classes in making nasi ulam and other healthy food. Though sometimes called a Malaysian salad, it’s hard to slap a label on ulam. It is the collective name for the indigenous wild leaves, herbs, shoots, nuts and flowers that are eaten raw or lightly blanched. Most have strong flavours, with a fresh and tangy scent, and are said to have health properties. goingplacesmagazine.com | 42 | May 2019

There are dozens of varieties, among them the popular ulam raja (cosmos caudatus), petai (parkia speciosa) and pegaga (centella asiatica). They are said to have antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-ageing effects. The best way to get to know ulam is to taste it. Traditional Malay restaurants serve them in raw bunches with a range of dipping sauces. That’s the classic way to eat ulam. But these days, they get blended into drinks or made into contemporary dishes as well.

Though unfamiliar to his taste buds, it was love at first bite. He loved the strong peppery flavours. “I felt refreshed immediately,” he said. With a grant from the Toyota Foundation last year, Olmedo set up research teams in Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia to study the native edible wild greens and herbs in each country, their nutritional properties and their use, to create a database. Vietnam, Cambodia and several other Southeast Asian nations also have a tradition of eating these nutritional wild plants. About one-third of their plants are familiar to Malaysians, but the rest are unique to their location. The Ulam School will be an online school as well as a physical school at the university’s research centre on Langkawi island, targeted at locals and tourists. The online school will offer courses on ulam, their properties and recipes, while the Langkawi school aims to provide short classes on ulam and cooking. Olmedo feels that a return to ulam can give a healthy boost to the Malaysian diet at a low cost. While it is still widely eaten in Malaysia, ulam is not often the go-to choice of city people and rarely appears on the menus of upscale restaurants.

1 2

Dr. Eric Olmedo, a research fellow with the Institute of Ethnic Studies in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, is exploring further the contemporary use of ulam, including in fine dining. He is currently heading a two-year research project that will culminate in an Ulam School. Olmedo, a Frenchman married to a Malaysian, is an ulam fan. He had his first taste of these aromatic herbs 15 years ago at a Sunday lunch at his Malaysian in-laws’ home in his introduction to classic Malaysian cuisine.

“Nutrition advice in Malaysia often emphasises Western-influenced diets but imported food can be expensive. Ulam makes more sense,” he said. His research team includes chefs to develop recipes for the modern palate and is also working with fine-dining restaurants for ideas on the contemporary use of ulam. Of course, nutrition is the top priority, and thus, there won’t be any deep-fried ulam even if it’s tasty!

Health and nutrition were also at the top of Leong’s mind when she came up with the colourful rainbow ulam rice a few years ago to heal her spirit after her husband passed away. She found its invigorating flavours and colours to be a balm for her body and soul. With delicate colours entirely from plants and flowers, as well as the aroma of finely sliced ulam, the rainbow nasi ulam is a delightful party dish.

3

It has also turned out to be one of her most popular classes with students coming from as far as Singapore. Most of them want to eat healthier. Some are vegetarians or vegans wanting to add variety to their meals.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 43 | May 2019

For Olmedo, there’s nothing better than a simple meal of brown rice, grilled fish and ulam, which should include his favourite daun gajus, or cashew leaf. “I feel instantly energised!” he added.

Leong has crafted a vegan and vegetarian version where salted eggs are omitted and spicy shrimp paste is replaced with a tangy pineapple sauce. She has also experimented with Western ingredients such as nuts for different palates. Her creation is a cross between the classic ulam dishes of the Malay and Nyonya cuisines, which share similarities but use different herbs. Leong’s dish is based on her mother’s recipe, which was learned from a Nyonya neighbour. “My mum, Lana Lee, would make this dish once or twice a year,” said Leong. “But as I was young, I was often chased out of the kitchen and told to go study instead!”

ERIC OLMEDO

It was only much later that she learned to make it. Her first attempt took her almost eight hours as she got carried away and used too many herbs, which had to be sliced finely. Along the way, Leong learned how to choose the right herbs for the occasion, how many to use, and how to efficiently slice the greens and store them.

May 2019_Explore Ulam.indd 43

Her dish has also evolved with new ideas and is likely to change again, but the must-haves remain kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass and mint, all of which are healthy and tangy. Ulam rice is still one of Leong’s go-to dishes for a soul-lifting meal. ■

Christian Recomio | CHEF’S CUT

Food Creative Sitka’s Christian Recomio creates stunning food with local produce. Words Tan Lee Kuen | Photography Goh Seng Chong

It also happened that Kuah, who owns Food Foundry and Butter and Beans, was on a casual lookout for chefs. In Recomio, she found the person she was looking for, a like-minded gourmand, and they would go on to forge a tight business partnership. ‘‘His palate is very unique. He likes different flavours on the same plate,’’ says Kuah of Recomio.

They opened Sitka Restaurant in 2013, a modern Asian restaurant with inventive and refreshing cuisine that is heavy in its use of local produce. Recomio has changed the menu several times over the years, offering diners an interesting and eclectic selection such as soft-shell crab bao, mango and couscous salad and duck confit on toast. These days, you’ll find chicken and chives dumplings, spicy chili seafood pasta and BBQ sambal roast seabass on the menu. When the floor upstairs of Sitka became vacant just when they had to stop their Friday ‘Test Kitchen’ nights, they seized the opportunity to expand on their culinary vision. ‘‘Or we would become a restaurant that was just a business. It was not creative or exploring new boundaries,’’ says Recomio. With Sitka Studio, a restaurant

with a cool grey ambience, minimalist Danish furniture and a playful tasting menu, they have the ideal creative outlet. Currently only open on Friday nights, it allows Recomio to go all out with his ambitions in the stylish open kitchen. The idea is that Sitka Studio is going to showcase mainly Malaysian produce, it is going to be inventive, and it is going to be fun. Recomio is also big on traditional techniques, so the kitchen sees a lot of fermenting, brining, salting and pickling action. The menu changes regularly but has featured the humble baby kailan grilled and glazed with kelp and topped with a smoked confit egg yolk, the unsung local seabass basking in calamansi vinegar butter, and tart shells made from yuba (the skin formed from boiled soya milk) filled with creamy chicken parfait and pickled grape. It is not about forcing square pegs into round holes, however. If the local beef isn’t up to par, they won’t serve beef. Instead, Sitka concentrates on seafood and duck, two products for which they can find good and reliable suppliers. The duck is aged for 28 days and is one of their signature dishes.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 47 | May 2019

It was a chance meeting for Scottish chef Christian Recomio and Malaysian restaurateur Jenifer Kuah. Recomio was on a break from his café, Moonfish in Aberdeen, and visiting his sister, who was living in Kuala Lumpur. While in town, he helped with an underground supper club, where he met Kuah. They started chatting and found out that they shared a lot of common ideas about food.

‘‘Seafood here is very good, although supply can be a bit inconsistent. Like even if I want to have the same prawns as last week, I can’t always have them,’’ says Recomio. Born and raised in Scotland, Recomio had a mixed culinary background that went far beyond haggis and puddings. His father is Mexican, which inspired a love for all things spicy, and his mother is a catering director with classical French cooking training.

Since Sitka, he’s settled in Kuala Lumpur, taking regular breaks to get out there and recharge himself. Every year, Recomio and Kuah will take a month-long food tour to culinary hotspots around the world. So far, they have been to Japan, Mexico, Scotland, Paris, London, Naples and Copenhagen twice. ‘‘Wherever I am, I try to pick up something from the local markets. We’re not obsessed with just using local produce at the restaurants,’’ he says. From Kuala Lumpur, they connect with the rest of the world through collaborations, inviting chefs to cook for an evening at Sitka Studio.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 48 | May 2019

Now 42 years of age, Recomio finds that his tastes are changing. He’s never had much interest in Italian food, but the trip to Naples, where he sampled simple pasta dishes made well, changed his mind. ‘‘I’m appreciating more the good stuff that is honestly made. When you’re 20, you want to display all 20 ingredients and techniques in your food, but now that I’m in my 40s, I want to take away absolutely everything, leaving just the mackerel and the kosho.’’ ■

ingredients together. He says he’s always had a creative streak in him. He started with art and design in school but after his first year, had doubts that this was the path for him. He was presented with the opportunity to open a gourmet deli, which he took and discovered the business side of food as well as a passion for cooking. In 2004, when Recomio was just 26 years old, he opened Moonfish, a seafood restaurant in Aberdeen. ‘‘In our early days, we weren’t great for decor or service, but the produce was so good,’’ he recalls. ‘‘We were using almost 100 percent local produce, but it was

May 2019_Chef's Cut02.indd 48

not even spoken about that we were a farm-to-table restaurant.’’ The fresh produce was the selling point of the restaurant that saw him through two tough years as he was learning the ropes of an F&B business. Recomio was always curious and keen to learn, whether it was running a restaurant or cooking. When the Moonfish business was firmly established, he started taking summers off so he could take on culinary internships in restaurants around the world. One was Noma, the Michelin-star restaurant, where he spent a couple of months.

Meeting Expectations There is a growing demand within the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibition (M.I.C.E.) industry for dynamic and well-run venues, and few are able to rival award-winning Malaysian property developer S P Setia Berhad’s offerings. The combination of ample space, convenience and a host of all-inclusive services are reasons why regional event management agencies choose Setia SPICE in Penang or Setia City Convention Centre in Selangor to conduct conferences, events and exhibitions. Located five minutes away from Penang International Airport, the Eco Greencertified Setia SPICE is the first hybrid solar-powered convention centre in the world with a 2.5-hectare (6-acre) green rooftop park consisting of a special needs children playground, a bamboo garden and an urban spice garden. Below, the massive main column-free 4,000 square metre Grand Ballroom has a spacious floor area and sets the scene for what many can expect during their visit. It has a maximum capacity of 8,000 people when arranged in theatre-style seating. Alternately, it can accommodate up to 400 banquet tables. There are also 13 function rooms, including boardrooms to cater for smaller events. Integrated as a whole, this iconic venue consists of SPICE Arena (multipurpose hall), SPICE Aquatic Centre, SPICE Canopy (commercial retail outlets) and a 453-room Business Class Hotel operated by Amari Group, which is earmarked for completion next year.

“Penang is a must-visit destination. It has its own charms compared to Kuala Lumpur. Aside from being a destination for M.I.C.E. and business tourism, Penang is a haven for heritage, food and culture. This makes Penang an ideal destination for family vacations and those seeking relaxation,” said Datuk Koe Peng Kang, Executive Vice-President of S P Setia. In 2012, Setia City Convention Centre was built in Setia Alam, Shah Alam within close proximity of Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). As Malaysia’s first Eco Green certified convention centre, it overlooks a scenic lake with a beautiful view of a landscaped garden. The main ballroom accommodates 2,000 people in a banquet-style seating arrangement, while other amenities such as high-bandwidth Wi-Fi, built-in projectors and ample parking bays facilitate a memorable experience for both organisers and attendees. There are also two additional halls that can accommodate 350 exhibition booths or 4,000 people in a banquet-style seating arrangement. While suitable for large conferences, it is also perfect for small meetings, AGMs, teambuilding excursions, indoor and outdoor weddings and even elaborate birthday parties and graduation celebrations. ■ For reservations or more information, visit setiacitycc.com / setiaspice.com

May 2019_Warisan 02.indd 57

Since opening in the gentrified suburb of Damansara Heights last September, Siti Li has earned a reputation as one of the most authentic Malay dining destinations in town. For proof, just ask the many older-generation Malays who flock here for their fix of old-time favourites such as asam pedas ikan, laksa Johor, sup tulang, cekodok pisang and nasi kahwin koboi. Founders Siti Kader and Shareen Ramli, who entered each other’s lives when Shareen’s father married Siti, bonded over their memories of their respective late mothers’ cooking. By fateful coincidence, Siti lost her mother in the same year that Shareen’s mother passed on. Siti recalls, “From a young age, my mum taught me the importance of treating food with respect, from the ingredients and cooking methods right down to the way food is served with plates and cutlery laid out properly on the table.”

May 2019_Warisan 02.indd 58

“Cekodok kami kini menjadi satu ketagihan dikalangan hipster,” ujar Shareen.

Likewise, Shareen’s house used to be where everyone wanted to eat; she and her sister spent many happy hours making popiah (spring rolls) and curry puffs under their mother’s watchful eye. Their shared passion for food prompted the ladies to start Smokin’ Salma’s, a business supplying commercial murtabak and curry puffs, followed by an experimental stint in a food studio, where they tested the market with recipes that Siti learned from her mother. “From a base menu of nasi lemak, laksa Johor (noodles in a creamy seafood broth) and nasi kahwin koboi (an indulgent rice dish cooked in ghee and served with a chicken recipe known as ayam masak merah), we built on the menu and learned what worked,” says Shareen. Two years later, the duo moved into their current space, capable of accommodating 55 people, nearly three times the previous capacity. Sporting bright colours and communal tables, Siti Li is inviting and Instagrammable, which may have helped it acquire a whole generation of new fans. "Our cekodok (banana fritters) has become a cult hit among hipsters,” declares Shareen. “Beyond that, we are glad to have sparked their interest in exploring what classic Malay cuisine is all about. It’s eye-opening because a lot of them don’t have recent memories of it.” On the flip side, their biggest challenge is educating newcomers who compare their offerings – and prices – to street food. Shareen points out, “This is a speciality restaurant and

18/04/2019 11:37 AM

we invest in a lot of things and processes that people don’t see. But most people have not been exposed to the fact that Malay food doesn’t mean cheap.” Siti elaborates, “We use Basmati parboiled rice, which is healthier, for our nasi lemak. We roast our own spices instead of buying bumbu (premade commercial spices). And instead of white sugar, we use the more expensive gula melaka (palm sugar) in our sambal ikan bilis (anchovy chilli paste) because it gives a smokier, more intense flavour.” Certain ingredients need to be specially sourced. Siti Li buys gula melaka from a Malay community in Batam, while beef and fish come from FELDA farms and Koperasi Nelayan, respectively. By giving them a regular income, Siti Li does its part to empower small traders and artisans who are part of the country’s Malay culinary heritage.

Is it worth the trouble? Their customers think so. For every customer who complains their nasi lemak is expensive, there is the story of another who keeps coming back because Siti Li’s cooking reminds him of his grandmother’s. Siti says firmly, “My mum taught me that with the right ingredients, you can make magic. I am not compromising on that. Malay cooking is something unique, and I want to properly represent it.” ■

6

goingplacesmagazine.com | 59 | May 2019

Making socially conscious choices also means that Siti Li probably has 20 to 30 percent more suppliers than most food and beverage outlets of its size.

From 9 May to 3 June, Siti Li will prepare a special buffet showcasing southern Peninsula specialities such as masak lemak telur itik and squid ink dishes. Sugee cookies, pineapple tarts, golden coconut crunch, cheese bangkit and pumpkin almond cookies will also be available for sale.

SPECIAL FEATURE

Palm oil is more than just a Let’s take a rich source of tocotrienols. look at some of them: There are other substances in the vegetable oil that also lend a lot of health benefits. Plants contain unique substances, called phytonutrients, which are believed to provide health benefits such as protection from certain diseases while boosting heart health. Research has uncovered a considerable amount of phytonutrients in palm oil. Crude palm oil is said to be one of the richest natural plant sources of 13 different types of carotenoids, the substances that give palm oil its orange-reddish colour. Red palm oil is a rich source of phytonutrients – α- (alpha), β- (beta) and ϒ- (gamma) carotenoids are converted into vitamin A in the body.

Beta-carotene can prevent LDL cholesterol – the bad cholesterol – from being oxidised, which increases the risk of coronary heart disease. Research increasingly suggests that some carotenes may protect from certain cancers, such as breast cancer. Apart from carotene, palm oil is also a rich source of phytonutrients such as phytosterols, which are well-known for their ability to help lower cholesterol levels. They are frequently added to foods traditionally known to be high in fats (such as margarine and butter) to reduce the total cholesterol and bad cholesterol content. Squalene, the substance mostly found in shark liver oil, can also be obtained from plant sources including palm oil. It not only helps to inhibit cholesterol production, thus reducing cholesterol levels and providing a boost to heart health, it also helps reduce the risk of certain cancers such as skin cancer. Phytonutrients found present in small portions in palm oil are Phospholipids, Coenzyme Q10 and Polyphenolics. Phospholipids promote and support better nerve function and improve memory and brain function as we age. They can be useful to pregnant women to help support the memory and brain development of the baby. Coenzyme Q10 boosts energy production by the body and protects from cell damage caused by free radicals and other by-products of metabolism. Polyphenolics inhibit oxidation of bad cholesterol, thus promoting better heart health. They also protect from cancers such as prostate cancer and breast cancer.

65 News & Updates

Continuing To Prosper The oneworld alliance of 13 world-leading airlines, which includes Malaysia Airlines, recently celebrated its 20th anniversary at a special town hall session held at the South Support Zone in Sepang. Malaysia is the first outside of the United Kingdom to host a series of town halls that oneworld has planned throughout the year for staff of member airlines. Present during the event were oneworld Chief Executive Officer Rob Gurney and senior colleagues from the oneworld Managing Company, as they shared how the alliance is undergoing a radical transformation. The event was also attended by Malaysia Airlines’ Chief Executive Officer Captain Izham Ismail, with staff singing Happy Birthday to oneworld to commemorate its anniversary, after which pulut kuning (yellow sticky rice) was served as a substitute for a birthday cake.

INSIDE MALAYSIA AIRLINES

Rewarding Excellence Winners of Malaysia Aviation Group’s (MAG) Anugerah WOW 2019, comprising four outstanding individuals and three phenomenal teams, were celebrated like champions at a football-themed event held recently at the South Support Zone in Sepang. The event saw friendly matches as well as commentators, marshals and referees livening up the atmosphere. Players from the Malaysian national football squad, Team Harimau Malaya, made an appearance, going up against MAG’s very own Team Musang Berapi in a friendly onstage match. Anugerah WOW, short for ‘Way of Working’, is an initiative by the airline to honour and recognise committed employees who went above and beyond the call of duty, be it in operational excellence or customer satisfaction.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 66 | May 2019

A Beautiful Partnership Malaysia Airlines is proud to be the official airline partner for the Football Association of Malaysia. Aside from being named the official airline for Team Harimau Malaya and Harimau Muda, the two-year partnership will also see both parties working together on marketing and promotional activities. Malaysia Airlines sponsored flights for Harimau Malaya during the AFF Suzuki Cup Final. “Just like the athletes, Malaysia Airlines is the nation’s flag bearer across the world. This partnership signifies our overall support for the development of sports for the country, which transcends race, religion, age and cultural differences,” says CEO Captain Izham Ismail. Malaysia Airlines has also been a strong supporter of various sports-related initiatives, including sponsorships for national divers Nur Dhabitah Sabri and Pandelela Rinong, as well as paragliding athlete Nadiah Wafa.

SAFETY + SERVICE INFO

CABIN LUGGAGE HANDLING Passenger and crew safety onboard our flights is our highest priority. In compliance with the airline’s policy and in observing Occupational, Safety and Health Regulations requirements, cabin crew are no longer required to stow passengers’ hand luggages into the overhead stowage compartment. This is to minimise occupational hazard and ergonomic risks faced by cabin crew in the aircraft. Cabin crew on duty will, however, assist passengers travelling with infants, young passengers travelling alone, the elderly, and passengers with reduced mobility. Passengers who are fit and in good health must carry, stow and secure their own hand luggages on board. Hand luggage exceeding the 7kg weight limit is required to be checked in before boarding.

PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PED) For safety reasons and in line with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia guidelines, mobile phones and all PEDs must be switched off once aircraft doors are closed. Whilst cruising, devices placed in flight mode may be used. The devices must again be switched off during the approach for landing until the aircraft is parked at the terminal building. Devices transmitting strong signals must remain switched off throughout the flight, until disembarkation. The Captain may prohibit the use of devices that can interfere with the aircraft’s system.

LITHIUM BATTERIES Lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries for portable electronic devices (PEDs), including medical devices must not exceed 2g for lithium metal batteries and 100Wh for lithium ion batteries. All spare batteries, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for PEDs must be carried in passengers’ carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. For PEDs containing non-spillable batteries, they must be 12V or less or 100Wh or less. A maximum of two spare batteries may be carried. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.

ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES Electronic cigarettes must be carried on one’s person or in carry-on baggage only. Recharging of the device in-flight is not permitted.

ZERO TOLERANCE OF ABUSE We value courteousness. Any form of threat, verbal abuse or violence towards our staff will be taken seriously. We are committed to supporting anyone who has been the victim of an assault.

FILM REVIEWS

WANT HELP WITH WHAT TO WATCH THIS MONTH? FILMMAKER AND DIRECTOR KAM RASLAN MAKES THE CASE FOR THESE MOVIES.

with his politics, but his movies are invariably a directing and acting masterclass.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 80 | May 2019

THE MULE Clint Eastwood has acted in 72 movies and TV shows since 1955 and directed 40 movies (Quentin Tarantino has only directed nine), including Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby, both of which won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director. The Mule might be his last as an actor (he hasn’t decided yet; it depends if there is a good script for an 89-year-old). Beginning his long career in Sergio Leone’s spaghetti Westerns, he was quite simply the coolest man in the world but he hasn’t been afraid to show himself growing old. In The Mule, he plays an until-recently successful, happy-go-lucky flower-grower but neglectful husband and father (he forgot to go to his own daughter’s wedding). But now he is broke. “Damn Internet ruins everything,” he says as he puts his meagre belongings into the back of his rusty old truck. In a desperate attempt to make some money and to make amends with his family, he agrees to become a drug mule, driving bags of drugs to distant towns. An old man, once a pillar of polite society, has been reduced to breaking the laws he always lived by. But he’s making good and easy money. Steadily and inexorably, Clint Eastwood, the director, cranks up the pressure. Clint Eastwood is a genuinely great filmmaker who builds moving character studies and tense drama without the wild histrionics of, say, Quentin Tarantino, and because he can always recruit a stellar cast, it’s easy to forget that his movies have a relatively small budget. I don’t always agree

THE NAMESAKE

GLASS Director M. Night Shyamalan is a rarity because since his remarkable 1999 debut The Sixth Sense (“I see dead people”), he has created his own genre. His movies have elements of horror and thrillers, but they are also unsettling, sinister and ancient. His genre is the supernatural. It’s unsurprising that he explores between and across genres because although he is an American, he was born in the small south Indian French exclave of Puducherry before growing up in Philadelphia, one of America’s oldest cities, which has been the backdrop for nearly all his films. And while crossing genres, he also created a group of superheroes, which he has now brought together in Glass. In Unbreakable (2000), Bruce Willis is an ordinary man who discovers he cannot be hurt after surviving a train crash and is pitted against Samuel L. Jackson, whose bones break easily but whose devilishly intelligent mind makes him untouchable. In Split (2016), James McAvoy plays a very confused sadist inhabited by 24 separate personalities. In Glass, they are all brought together in a lunatic asylum and toyed with by Samuel L. Jackson, who also toys with the whole superhero genre, and we meet a sinister power that attempts to control them and us as well. Glass is a satisfying continuation of M. Night Shyamalan’s world. And it even has a nod to the Nakatomi building of Die Hard. How many more genres will he cross?

One of the great things about flying is that it gives one a chance to catch up on classic movies. Indian-American director Mira Nair does not make enough movies, but she has a unique quality because of her Indian heritage and interests and because she is a rare female director. Her movies have shown a great interest in the Indian diasporic experience and generational change. In Mississippi Masala, an Indian family is culturally adrift after being transported from East Africa to, well, Mississippi. Who else makes movies about that? The Namesake, based on the novel by Jhumpa Lahiri, tells of a thoroughly Americanised young man attempting to chart his own path and understand his roots as he is pulled and pushed by his increasingly Bengali parents who took the family to America in the first place, the spur having been a train crash. Interestingly, both M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable and The Namesake hinge on a train crash. If you didn’t watch The Namesake when it came out, now’s your chance. It’s a captivating study of not only the Indian diaspora but the choices many of us find ourselves making to understand our roots in a culturally globalised world.

The Mule, Glass and The Namesake are playing onboard. Check your in-flight entertainment system for channel information.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH Dayang Nurfaizah's self-titled album is playing onboard under the Malay music genre. Check your in-flight entertainment system for channel information.

Known for her soulful style, Malaysian singer Dayang Nurfaizah has been singing professionally since she was just 18 years old, with dozens of albums and accolades under her belt. Her clear passion for music and her fans is why she has remained a darling of the local music scene, even after two decades. Going Places catches up with the veteran singer on her journey and experiences. Tell us how did your love for music come about, particularly for the R&B genre? I have been singing since I was in school, and I loved doing it even at home! In fact, it was my neighbour who entered me in my first singing competition. That was a turning point, as I realised how much I love being on stage and performing. While I’d like to describe my music as pop and R&B, people tend to associate me with the latter because of my singing style. Describe yourself as a singer in 10 words or less. I’m just a singer who loves sharing my music. With a career spanning two decades, what are some of the challenges you have faced? As the new kid on the block in the early days, the biggest challenge was to catch a big break, to get the industry to recognise the talent I had to offer. Maintaining my brand and staying relevant were challenges that came after. Not everything that one does in life will be a success. I have gone through all these phases, and it makes me appreciate the little things even more. The key is to never give up and keep going! With many new and younger singers being discovered all the time, how do you adapt to ensure you remain relevant to your fans? The Malaysian music scene has certainly evolved greatly. I think it’s a great thing that new talents are being discovered. As for me, I try my best to release new material and songs for my fans. I’m very fortunate to have amazing, loyal fans who have been with me through the years. They are the reason I’m still here, and I’m grateful for the bond my music has created between us. Of course, in terms of music production, I try to keep up with what’s current, but the roots of my style and genre have not changed. For me, singing and music come from the heart. The important thing in a song is the melody and lyrics, so if you’ve executed these well, your fans will embrace it! What has been your most memorable moment in your 20-year musical career? There have been a few! One that comes to mind is winning the award for best vocals at Anugerah Juara Lagu 29, one of Malaysia’s largest annual music events. I was happy enough to be a finalist after a 10-year hiatus from competing, so the win was unexpected. When the judges announced the win, I was ecstatic. It felt like they recognised my talent and hard work, so it was a priceless moment for me. What do you think of the Malaysian music scene? I’m extremely proud to be part of it! We have so many amazing talents in all genres of music, and everyone has their own uniqueness. I learn from new artists too. Times have changed. Back in the day, you had to be signed to a record label. These days, you can even make music from home and share it on social media platforms. Who are some of your musical icons, and what is it about them that you admire? There are many, but two come to mind right off the bat. The first is the late

May 2019_GPE.indd 87

Saloma. Her singing was so honest and from the heart – just good music in the whole sense of the word and what makes her so memorable. Another musical icon I look up to is Whitney Houston. She was my go-to reference when I first started singing and was developing my own style. I believe that until this day, no one comes close to the beauty and power of her voice. How has the advent of social media impacted the local music industry? Is this a good thing, and how different was it compared to when you first started out? I started 20 years ago, when music promotion was done through traditional means. With social media today, it’s much easier to reach out to an audience, get noticed and build a fan base. There are many platforms available, so I’d say it’s a good time to be in music. How do you react to criticism, be it online, print and even verbal? Criticism is part and parcel of a singer’s life, especially in the era of social media. I prefer to focus on the positives! I take everything as an opportunity to learn and move forward. I’m also fortunate to have a solid team that not only supports me but keeps me focused and grounded. What’s next for you? Where do you see yourself in the near future? I will be having a concert called 'Dayang Dua Dekad' in July at Istana Budaya, to celebrate my 20 years in the music industry. This is a concert specially dedicated to my fans who have been supporting me through the years. As for the future, I hope to keep sharing and making music. What advice would you give to aspiring singers? I have a song called Tak Pernah Menyerah (Don’t Give Up). I have learned throughout my years in the industry that the music business is tough. You must believe in yourself and just keep going. Every star will have his or her time to shine and your time will come. You just need to know what you want and stay focused and true to yourself.
