If books are the gateways to endless worlds, then libraries are sacred sanctuaries of knowledge and power. Whether they’re marvels of modern engineering and design, or a romantic Baroque-era showcase of architecture, check out our list of five amazingly beautiful libraries that bibliophiles won’t mind getting lost in.

Cruising the long, open road and being one with the elements are the greatest highs of riding. Add some amazing scenery, an exciting route and great company, and there is no better travelling experience than on a motorbike. Whether it’s the Ha Giang loop or the Ho Chi Minh trail in Vietnam, or the Thakhek Loop through Central Laos, our list of destinations in Southeast Asia should be on every biker’s bucket list.

FROM THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF

Our website will soon be equipped with a live chat feature that allows customers to interact with our agents in English for nonmonetary servicing requests or enquiries, such as flight ticket purchases and ancillaries. Travelling can often be tiring and may leave you exhausted; thus, we’ve come up with an additional service for our guests to allow for the best rest you can get onboard with a product called Neighbour Free Seat. Passengers can now buy their adjacent seats at a discounted price, to give yourself a lot more room to relax and allow you to enjoy a comfortable, spaceabundant travel to your destination.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 8 | November 2019

We will also be stepping up our hospitality by making some changes to the in-flight dining experience with a host of new products. From November onwards, economy class passengers will be able to pre-book their meal of choice for their travels, which allows them to ensure they get their preferred meal. Furthermore, we will be offering economy class meal upgrades, which give the customer a promise of choice and variety onboard. Finally, the Buy Onboard service allows customers to order extra snacks should they still feel hungry after their meal. These services create a larger variety of choice for customers in their dining and truly embody the Malaysian culture of food diversity, even in the skies. These initiatives will be available on selected flights.

Capt Izham Ismail

Group Chief Executive Officer Malaysia Airlines Berhad

November is an exciting month for us too, as we will be tying up with Tourism Malaysia at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London in support of Visit Malaysia 2020 (VM2020). You will be seeing us heavily promoting holiday destinations in Malaysia whilst showcasing Malaysia’s unique attractions, arts and culture, as well as cuisine.

Dear Guests, It is my pleasure to welcome you onboard. Malaysia Airlines strives to embody the culture and spirit of Malaysia throughout the entire flying experience for our passengers, and as such, we’re always on the lookout for ways to extend our Malaysian Hospitality to you as much as we can. In the month of November, I’m happy to share that we will be making a few improvements and introducing some new features and services that cover convenience, comfort and care.

EDITOR’S NOTE

pollution from plastic or waste, light pollution is reversible. We just need to be aware of it and take steps to minimise light, starting from our own homes. New Zealand is one of the very few countries proactively working to reduce light pollution. Its Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, defined as a protected area offering exceptionally starry nights, is one of only 11 in the world, and the only one in the Southern Hemisphere. About one million tourists visit each year to see the stars, and other communities are taking steps to emulate its success, according to town officials.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 10 | November 2019

Do turn to pages 38-41 for our story on astrotourism in New Zealand, where the indigenous Māori people have used detailed astronomical knowledge for navigation, to mark seasons and to sow crops for generations. I hope the article inspires you enough to plan a trip there, especially for your children, so they will be able to appreciate the value of a natural night environment. Plus, most of us grew up singing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could show them what they’re singing about?

Julie Goh Editor

Lately I’ve been worried about the level of noise around me. It seems we are constantly bombarded by noise, be it from traffic, music or even someone munching on popcorn next to you in the movie theatre. Noise pollution and the hazards of too much noise are not talked nor thought about often. Most of us tune it out, perhaps from not being conscious about it. But once you start noticing it, it gets to you. Similarly, we are slowly losing one of the most beautiful naturally occurring resources on Earth – the natural night sky. For billions of years, life on Earth has existed in the rhythm of light and dark created by the illumination of the sun, moon and stars. As a child, I enjoyed looking up to see a spectacular night sky filled with stars. It was one of the joys to be able to step out of the house for a post-dinner walk or to simply sit on the grass in the neighbourhood padang to watch the magical show above us.

Melbourne is hosting a two-year residency of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Princess Theatre. If you are a Potterhead, don’t miss the opportunity to see the first Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. And while there, do visit the city’s popular laneways and famous street art, and decide for yourself if Melbourne is truly the culture capital of Australia. For a taste of what to expect, read our story on pages 44-47. Elsewhere, we have a guide to Colombo on pages 31-32 if you happen to be visiting Sri Lanka this time. In our chef series, Ang Ling Chee of Parklife Restaurant in Kuala Lumpur advocates that healthy eating does not have to be boring. As someone who is trying to eat more nutritiously, his wholesome and delicious food is a welcome change. His story is on pages 50-52. See you next month. ■

Letter of the Month Having been born and brought up in the land of groundnuts (Menglembu, Perak), I have become accustomed to Malaysia Airlines’ unique salted peanuts as my comfort snack during flights. I really enjoy the fresh salted fragrance and the crunchiness of the nuts. It reminds me of my kampung and also acts like a mild tranquiliser to calm me during flights as I hold on to something familiar. On a recent flight from Singapore to KL, I dozed off the minute I got into my seat and buckled up. When I woke up halfway during the flight, to my horror, everyone around me was enjoying their peanuts except me. I panicked and nearly hit the service button when, from the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of the little packet tucked into the paper bag I had placed next to me. I smiled to myself with relief, slowly retrieved the packet and held it close to my nose to relish my childhood memories before devouring my favourite kacang masin till the last morsel. From that moment on, I realised how important those little things in life are, especially when you need them most. I’m glad that Malaysian Hospitality is well-oiled and operating even when passengers are asleep! M.T. SRITHARAN Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

MOHAMAD ASHRAF AFIF BIN ROSELY Johor Bahru, Malaysia

I am an Australian senior who revels in world travel. I patronise my national airline Qantas as my first preference, followed by oneworld carriers when Qantas is unavailable. I had one such experience recently, where I flew Malaysia Airlines from Tokyo to KL, then to Sandakan, followed by flights from KK to Labuan, then KK to KL and Singapore. Quite an exposure to Malaysia Airlines and to say that I was impressed with all aspects and all flights would be a vast understatement! Service, both on the ground and in the air, was excellent; meals, as presented, were in all instances quite delicious (indeed, one meal took my prize as my best airline meal ever!); on-time performance perfect; and in fact, all aspects exceeded my expectations. I congratulate Malaysia Airlines for its overall performance. I look forward to my next experience with great anticipation. ROD PALMER Redcliffe, Queensland, Australia

Each month, Going Places will select a Letter of the Month and the winner will receive a gift. For November, the winner will receive a Lushberry Axel Silver 29” luggage worth about USD450 (RM1,856).

Going Places welcomes your comment. Letters may be edited for clarity and brevity and are published in the language in which they are written. Please include your full name, contact number and location when writing to us at mhmedia@spafax.com.

The U.K. tour of Barber Shop Chronicles has entered its final month, with just three venues left. Get absorbed into this heart-warming, hilarious and insightful play that takes place in barber shops in five African cities – Johannesburg, Harare, Kampala, Lagos and Accra – as well as London. These barber shops serve as places where African men go, not just for haircuts, but also for conversations about everything from confessions to politics, feuds, loneliness, family, jokes and sports. Barber Shop Chronicles looks at this vast collection of tales and explores the intricacies of the exchanges that take place between the men.

Escape To Western Australia There’s much ado in Western Australia this month with the 10-day Gourmet Escape food festival. Taking place on 8-17 November, the festival comprises more than 50 events spread out across Perth, Margaret River and Swan Valley, featuring over 160 local wineries and producers, and culinary stars like Marco Pierre White, Pierre Koffmann and David Chang. Ticketed events in the Swan Valley include artisanal and authentic culinary experiences such as Wine & Sign with Marco Pierre White and Tex-Mex Takeover at Mandoon Estate, while Margaret River hosts events that highlight its wines and produce on the beach, such as the 5 Hats Lunch by Momofuku Seiōbo x Yarri. Some of the festival’s best highlights can be found in Perth, where Pierre Koffmann – the man behind London’s three-star restaurant La Tante Claire – will bring his know-how to Crown Perth’s Bistro Guillaume. gourmetescape.com.au

More Than Lobsters Those who love a good slice of sourdough bread will be glad to know the Bali-based Starter Lab has opened its first outpost on Singapore’s Havelock Road. Starter Lab started in 2016 as a bakery in Canggu and quickly gained a reputation for excellent breads and pastries, thanks to its founder, Emerson Manibo, whose breadmaking skills impressed many at San Francisco’s legendary Tartine. He was nominated for the James Beard Award while he was Head Baker at Della Fattoria. Highlights from the selection of sandwiches include grilled cheese with rosemary sourdough or mascarpone with honey, walnuts and bee pollen. Besides bread, Starter Lab also has a range of pastries such as scones and cinnamon rolls.

Though Pince & Pints in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur has built a solid reputation for its lobster dishes, there are times when you crave a variety of other dishes. The restaurant recently introduced a range of non-lobster specialities, and they are by no means an afterthought. The new additions include starters such as the mushroom soup with truffle, as well as perfectly crisp zucchini fries and generous servings of portobello mushroom fries, which also make for excellent bar bites. For the mains, you can opt for meatier classics such as roast lamb, served with mashed potatoes and baby carrots, or beef ribs with onion rings and grilled corn on the cob, both of which come in portions fit for a meal-and-a-half. The Fish & Chips is another new addition, with two pieces of cod on a heap of hand-cut fries and house-made mushy peas.

Have A St Pierre-y Christmas With Christmas around the corner, get your bookings in for special year-end meals. For those looking to make an impression on loved ones (and yes, business clients count!), reserve a table at Saint Pierre in W Kuala Lumpur, whose head chef Emmanuel Stroobant has designed a range of festive menus available throughout December. They include a three- or four-course Festive Lunch Menu (available 4-30 December) that features starters such as smoked buri and black truffle, followed by a main course of wagyu beef cheek prepared as a pot-au-feu; squash pasta with chestnut and truffle; Malabar snapper with Thai basil, olive and raspberry; or Irish duck with endive and sansho pepper. For heartier and more lavish meals, opt for the five- or seven-course Dinner Menu (available 3-30 December), which includes starters such as uni, scallop and foie gras, with a selection of mains like 36-hour braised beef short rib; barramundi en croute; and Cornish chicken with winter black truffle. For those who want to go all out on Christmas Eve, pick the eight-course dinner, with dishes ranging from the decadent lobster with egg, potato and Iranian saffron to the delicate uni with black truffle; and the hearty main course of lamb or Kyushu wagyu beef.

A memorable dining experience awaits at the Mandarin Grill, which reopened earlier this year at the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur with a refreshed interior. The restaurant also welcomes Italian chef de cuisine Luigi Stinga, who joins from the two-Michelin-starred restaurant Seta in Mandarin Oriental, Milan. The young chef, who hails from Naples, draws inspiration from his grandmother’s cooking as well as stints in multiple Michelin-starred restaurants in Italy, to bring authentic Italian fare with a modern approach. Expect dishes such as Ravioli Di Baccalá – ravioli with dried salted cod fish, potatoes and oregano; Palate E Prosecco – potatoes with leek and caviar; Spaghetto All’ Astice – spaghetti with romanesco, Boston lobster and bottarga; Agnello E Peperoni – lamb with red pepper, black polenta and lamb jus, as well as Tiramisu – the all-time favourite dessert made from mascarpone cream, coffee and chocolate.

The historic Grand Palais in Paris is set to host the 23rd edition of Paris Photo, one of the world’s largest art fairs dedicated to photography, this month. The show offers an ambitious programme that celebrates the best photography the past two centuries have to offer. There is a diverse portfolio of photography on display, including fine art photography, arresting portraiture, and emotive series, environmental and political. For photography enthusiasts, it’s not to be missed as Paris Photo offers a unique insight into emerging techniques, past practices and global photography trends, and there are plenty of talks, curated exhibits and conversation cycles on offer.

The Other Art Fair is happening in Brooklyn, New York this month. Originating in London, the event has spread across the globe and now enjoys annual and biannual editions in several locations, from Dallas to Melbourne. The fair promises to deliver the most cuttingedge in design. “The Other Art Fair was born from a realisation of the disparity between an audience eager to discover the next big thing and talented artists struggling to gain recognition,” explains founder Ryan Stainer. “We are delighted that so many of our artists have been successful within the traditional gallery system: as prestigious international galleries choose to represent our artists, these individuals emerge in the spotlight of the art world as the names of the future.” Visit the Brooklyn edition for the inside scoop on the Big Apple’s burgeoning art talent.

Connecting To A

World-Class City As Kuala Lumpur’s upcoming international financial district, one of the key aims of the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) is to transform the city around it and advance its status to that of a world-class city.

In addition to being set up as Kuala Lumpur’s best business address, TRX will make itself an iconic destination for tourism and leisure. To achieve this, TRX has paid special attention to an important factor in establishing Kuala Lumpur as a world-class city – connectivity. TRX will be the most accessible district in Kuala Lumpur, whether you travel by train, by road or on foot. Kuala Lumpur’s famous Golden Triangle encompasses the city’s prime tourist and shopping districts of KLCC and Bukit Bintang. Being located in the corner of the Golden

Triangle, TRX is essentially an extension of the Bukit Bintang commercial belt. To capitalise on this, TRX is building pedestrian walkways to link the district directly to the heart of Bukit Bintang, improving walkability both within and outside the district. Designing a peerless public realm helps create a business district that will function beyond business hours, one that is vibrant and peoplecentric, as is the philosophy of renowned urban planner Jose Silvetti of Machado Silvetti, the chief master planner of TRX. “Whether the district will work or otherwise depends on the level which its people interact. We can have towers and beautiful office spaces, where individuals can work and have fantastic views, but it is the place where everybody gets together on their way home, where they meet

to go shopping or just having time to spare is where the city proves itself,” said Silvetti. Pedestrians will find outdoor comfort and security traversing TRX’s network of walkways and throughout the district’s four-hectare (10acre) central urban park. A rooftop park unlike any other, TRX City Park sits atop a four-storey shopping mall that is part of The Exchange TRX, the district’s lifestyle precinct. TRX will also have an additional 1.6 hectares (4 acres) of well-connected green pockets, equipped with informative directional signage and other useful facilities such as benches, shading, kiosks and public toilets, creating a pedestrian-friendly public realm. This weaving public realm will extend to Bukit Bintang on one end and loop back to the Tun

Razak Exchange MRT station on the other, connecting commuters to the rest of Greater Kuala Lumpur by rail. The TRX MRT station is the only interchange in the city between the existing Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) line and the upcoming Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya (SSP). With exceptional rail connectivity as the centerpoint of the MRT network, commuters can reach TRX from any MRT station in the Klang Valley in 45 minutes or less. To give priority to pedestrians, TRX’s vehicle entrances are accessible mainly via an underground tunnel loop system. This frees up the ground level street frontage to be used

for other purposes such as lively retail outlets, creating an active and vibrant atmosphere. TRX also has direct access to some of Kuala Lumpur’s major roads and highways, with links to Jalan Tun Razak, the network of roads in Bukit Bintang, as well as the SMART Tunnel via direct tunnel access. Meanwhile, its connection to the Maju Expressway (MEX) shortens travel time between TRX and Kuala Lumpur International Airport to 40 minutes, while direct access to the upcoming third phase of the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway, also known as the Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway, will ensure seamless connectivity to the rest of the Greater Klang Valley.

TRX is also working with Kuala Lumpur City Hall to upgrade Jalan Tun Razak, one of the main arterial roads for the city’s central business district. Road widening works and effective lane balancing and segregation, together with the construction of new access roads around TRX, are expected to help with traffic dispersal and reduce congestion along Jalan Tun Razak and the adjacent Jalan Bukit Bintang by almost 30 percent. The high commercial potential of TRX as a new tourist and business destination is bound to have a spillover effect on the neighbouring districts of Imbi and Pudu, creating the impetus for urban regeneration in the surrounding area. ■

Colombo, Sri Lanka | MY GUIDE

Bustling Colombo Behind its everyday hustle, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka is a vibrant mix of colonial heritage and modern hideouts. Words Zinara Rathnayake | Illustration Maggie Li | Art Direction Euric Liew

Old World Charm

goingplacesmagazine.com | 31 | November 2019

Colombo is home to a rich history, written all over the eclectic structures and heritage buildings in Colombo Fort. The charming area is also the modern commercial hub, welcoming new establishments such as the World Trade Center (WTC). Opposite the twin towers of WTC, you will spot Old Colombo Dutch Hospital. Built in 1681 and later restored in the post-civil war era, the oldest establishment in Colombo Fort offers a glimpse into colonial architecture. The former hospital complex reserved for Dutch officers is now a happening shopping precinct with renowned upscale restaurants such as Ministry of Crab. Nearby, you can find the crumbling ruins of the Former General Post Office. Established by the British, the first official post office in the country is located opposite the President’s House – formally, King’s House. This illustrious housing complex, which was once the residence of British governors, is now occupied by the current President Maithripala Sirisena. Fort offers many interesting nooks and corners, but don’t miss the Last King’s Jail Cell. It was where King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe was imprisoned before he was deported to South India. The king ruled in Kandy, the last kingdom of Sri Lanka till 1815, before he was captured by the British army. On Chatham Street, you will find an elegant Victorian tower, Old Colombo Lighthouse, now

turned into a large clock tower. Next, walk into The Central Point. The abandoned building was refurbished after the civil war and now houses a beautifully designed money museum. Here, you can learn about currencies used in the early periods of Sri Lanka.

a maze, where you have to walk on narrow pavements as porters and cart wheelers manoeuvre past you, and day shoppers bargain for a good price. You can find shops filled with anything and everything, from imported chocolates and golden wedding wear with intricate details to funky toy crabs.

During the day, Colombo buzzes with activity. A self-guided walking tour will give you a glimpse into the ordinary life of Colombo. Start your tour at Khan Clock Tower. The hard-to-miss clock tower was built by a Farsi family who migrated to Colombo from Mumbai. It marks the entrance to Pettah, a sprawling marketplace. Pettah is

There’s also a large vegetable and fruit market, shaded by a tin roof. Get a thambili (king coconut) from a street vendor. Native to Sri Lanka, king coconuts have a large orange shell and naturally sweetened fresh water, perfect to beat the tropical heat. On 2nd Cross Street in Pettah, you will find

Colombo’s most Instagrammed building. Jami Ul-Alfar mosque is painted in an impeccable redand-white design, explaining its popular name, The Red Mosque. Dominating the busy cityscape, its minarets tower over the neighbourhood streets. A holy place of worship for Muslims, the mosque has pomegranateshaped domes, different from the traditional onion shapes found elsewhere. Make a brief stop at Wolvendaal church. Built during the Dutch colonial era, the church is impressive with its high ceilings, old furniture, and floors surfaced with ornate tombstones. Before

you end your tour, hop on a tuk tuk to visit the secondhand bookshops in Colombo. The long line of bookshops on DR Wijewardena Mawatha is flooded with used books, from Nicholas Sparks to Shakespeare classics and old Reader’s Digest magazines, sold for a quarter or half the retail price.

Modern City Like other big cities, Colombo has a modern, chic side to it. Cinnamon Gardens or Colombo 07 is sheltered by large, expansive trees. Lunch in Upali’s by Nawaloka. The homely restaurant dishes up delightful local cuisine. Order rice and curry, with a fiery-red Jaffna Crab Curry, and Hathmaluwa (a seven-vegetable curry). Be sure to try Sri Lankan buffalo curd with kitul treacle (a sugary syrup extracted from the kitul palm) for dessert. Opposite Upali’s lies Viharamahadevi Park, a sweeping park covered with trees. Nearby, you can find the Nelum Pokuna Art Street, offering a space for young and upcoming local artists. Most of the work here are canvas paintings, depicting the vibrant culture of the island. Drop by Saskia Fernando Gallery to get a glimpse of the contemporary art scene in Colombo. The spacious, bright establishment houses modern work of Sri Lankan artists,

such as Muvindu Binoy and Firi Rahman. For souvenirs, check out Lakpahana. You can buy ornaments, jewellery, scarves and bags designed by craftspeople from across the island. Good Market Shop is located at the same premises. This do-good establishment sells organic produce, herbal soaps, shampoo bars and other zero-waste items. When evening nears, chill at Café Kumbuk with a cup of Sri Lankan Soul Coffee and order the Tropical Hot Cake, a large pancake topped with granola, fruits and salted caramel ice cream.

Tropical Beauty If you have another day in the city, board the coastal line train to Bentota from the Fort Railway Station. The train passes through palm lands, fishing hamlets and lagoons covered with mangroves, offering a vast view of the Indian Ocean. Once in Bentota, visit Lunuganga Estate. The six-hectare garden is the country estate of Geoffrey Bawa, the renowned Sri Lankan architect who was the pioneer of the design concept, tropical modernism. It sits by the banks of Dedduwa Lake, a far-stretched lake with whimsical beauty. Lunuganga houses several aesthetic structures and small gardens within the main garden. The spacious bungalow has comfortable reading nooks with plenty of natural lighting.

Next, hop on a tuk tuk. A 15-kilometre drive through the narrow, tree-clad countryside streets, past green paddy fields, will take you to the Brief Garden. The former home of Bevis Bawa, elder brother of Geoffrey, this luscious jungle-esque gardenbungalow is an architectural masterpiece. Outside in the intimate garden, you will find a pool and a patio. Inside the house, vintage sculptures designed by

Bevis himself dot the large space, while its walls are covered with murals by local artists. Before you board the train back to Colombo, enjoy some time at Bentota Beach, a long, wide-open sandy beach with picturesque views. ■ About the writer Zinara Rathnayake is a Colombo-based freelance writer. She loves mountains, chai, creative non-fiction and India. Her stories often deal with local cuisines, community empowerment and sustainable travel.

Good to Know Mata LOCAL PHRASES therenne neh The main language spoken in Colombo is Sinhala, though in some parts of Colombo, Istuti Tamil too is widely spoken. In Sinhala, use Istuti to say thank you. Mata therenne neh is ‘I don’t Meke understand’. If you want to know the price of gaana kiyada an item, point to it and ask, meke gaana kiyada. Similarly, when you’re on a bus or a tuk tuk with no meter, ask keeyada to know the price.

APPS & BLOGS PickMe is the local alternative to Uber. The global app is widely functional in Colombo, but it’s handy to have PickMe on your phone, especially when an Uber is unavailable. For local restaurant tips, events and other up-to-date information, head to YAMU, its online site yamu.lk or its app. ATTIRE Colombo has hot, sweaty weather throughout the year. Wear loose cotton pants, tunics and breezy maxis. Keep things colourful for photos. Carry a shawl and cover up before you enter temples. During monsoons, from June till October, torrential downpours occur and last from a few minutes to a few hours. Carry an umbrella or a rain jacket to seek shelter from the rain.

To be successful in a fast-moving industry means never standing still, a work ethos that Leather Avenue Holding Sdn Bhd keeps well, says its Managing Director Kenny Toh. Interview Noel Foo | Photography courtesy of Leather Avenue

licensed manufacturer to Valentino Creations and our own brands such as Charles Berkeley, Esfolar and Lushberry. The obvious popular choice is Mendoza. We have been with them for more than 20 years.

Give us a bit of a background on Leather Avenue, when and where it was established, and how many stores do you have in Malaysia and overseas?

How does Leather Avenue set itself apart from other similar retailers?

Tell us a bit about your role at Leather Avenue. goingplacesmagazine.com | 34 | November 2019

Leather Avenue was formed approximately 10 years ago on the back of more than 20 years’ experience in the retail industry. My team and I have always envisioned that we are going to become a market leader in the Leather Goods and Luggage sector. We started with a very humble beginning of some core staff and grew to about 200 staff to-date. In the first year, we had only three stores, and today, we have grown to about 30 stores nationwide.

We are not only a typical retailer but instead hold the role of a sole distributor, own brands and are licensed to manufacture as well. So our business model is unique and always comes from different business acumens and directions. This way, it enhances our capability to be very competent in the market as well as being able to offer the newest products to our customers, which is essential in today’s fastchanging world.

3

Who is Leather Avenue’s target market? What are the brands marketed under Leather Avenue? Which is the more popular brand?

We are the sole distributors for Mendoza, The Bridge (Florence, Italy), Cerutti 1881, Coccinelle and new brands Tru Virtu and Ogon. We are the

moving towards to a more globalised taste, essentially a preference for a more modern lifestyle. We have always believed that modern consumers are constantly upgrading their lifestyle by seeking better products, and we try to keep up with the pace of the demand. Leather Avenue is licensed to design and develop new products under certain brands. Which brands are these and what are the advantages of being able to do this?

We are licensed to produce Valentino Creations under the category of luggage, and brands we own such as Charles Berkeley (leather goods), Esfolar (lady apparels and handbags) and Lushberry (luggage). We have a team of designers who are responsible for the development of new products every season.

With the affluent travel lifestyle of modern millennials, the demand for better quality and lifestyle accessories is on the rise. We anticipate the market will expand and we are more than ready to embrace the trend.

Because of our exposure in different categories locally and abroad, this has opened up our advantage to strike a balance between Asian and Western design influences. Some of the brands such as Charles Berkeley are now in the Italian market and Lushberry in Japan, Taiwan, Dubai, U.K. and U.S. This gives us a footprint in the international arena and at the same time, (makes us) very competitive. How does the company keep up with changing consumer demand?

Our forward vision allows us to constantly innovate, explore and come out of our comfort zone. We cannot wait for the market to change first before us. In fact, we would like to constantly introduce the latest and be the first in our industry. Yes, there will always be risks by chartering into untamed waters, but if you never try, you'll never gain. Are online luggage and travel accessory retailers a threat? Is there a preference for consumers to purchase online these days

•_Nov 2019_InProfile02.indd 35

compared to brick and mortar stores?

Yes, we cannot ignore that the online business is a threat, but we think that both online and offline stores will eventually coexist and will not cannibalise each other. In some cases, it is already happening. Many think that the cost for selling online is relatively cheaper, but on the contrary, you need a lot of back-up in terms of photography and support in order to upload the product information. Moreover, in the luggage sector, the logistics cost is quite costly. In terms of customer behaviour, online provides more convenience, but brick and mortar provides the shopping experience for the five senses, in which you can see, feel, smell, taste and touch, which is unattainable with a flat screen. What about counterfeit bags? What has been the impact from black market sales on Leather Avenue’s business and revenue? How has the company overcome this challenge?

I admit this is an ongoing battle for many companies. Counterfeits always have their grey

areas and are costly if you pursue legal action against all of them. From a practical sense, most copies would never achieve the same level of quality anyway compared to an original. We would look at it on a case-by-case basis. Having said this, customers today are smart enough to differentiate between these products. Most of the fakes we have seen in the market are ‘cheap’ copies and we believe our genuine customers would not buy them. What trends are you seeing for luggage sales next year, and how does Leather Avenue plan to ride on the trend?

The growth of the travel industry, particularly in the next decade in Asia, dominates almost 50 percent. There will definitely be high demand for travel accessories. You will notice there are now many luxury brands that have ventured into this category. With the affluent travel lifestyle of modern millennials, the demand for better quality and lifestyle accessories is on the rise. We anticipate the market will expand and we are more than ready to embrace the trend. ■

Close to midnight, on the summit of Mount John, in the middle of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, a dozen stargazers huddle in arctic jackets, clutching hot chocolate, excited to watch what our guide calls “the greatest light show in the world.” Our infrared torches allow us to navigate the rugged mountain top, home to some of the most powerful telescopes in the world, without diminishing the view that is fast emerging overhead. As the sky darkens from indigo to inky black, an eerie quietness descends upon the mountain and a spectacular starlit night reveals itself. The clarity of the stars is nothing short of extraordinary, and with each constellation appearing close enough to touch and our own galaxy, the Milky Way, arching impressively overhead, it’s easy to see why

•_Nov 2019_Explore-Astrotourism02.indd 39

astrotourism in New Zealand is such an out-of-this-world experience. Our guide for the evening with Tekapo’s Dark Sky Project is Holly McClelland, an astrophysics major and researcher with the University of Canterbury. Guide by night, her day job involves looking for exoplanets, planets outside our own solar system, to better understand the formation of planetary systems. Since 2004, 25 exoplanets, some of them “earth-like” have been discovered, deep in space, from the Mount John Observatory. McClelland begins by giving us a brief history of our surroundings, the Mackenzie Basin, a 4,300 square kilometre area on New Zealand’s South Island, encapsulating Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, home to the country’s highest mountain, and the villages of Tekapo, Twizel and Mount Cook. It was declared a Dark Sky Reserve

in 2012 and remains one of only eleven in the world, the only one in the southern hemisphere and the largest on the planet. It was also the first to be granted gold status, meaning there is virtually no light pollution whatsoever. Since achieving Dark Sky Reserve status, light pollution has been carefully controlled in the whole Mackenzie Basin region, though the town of Tekapo has been powering down its street lighting to better see the stars since the University of Canterbury Mount John Observatory was built in 1965. Low power sodium lighting has been enforced, by law, since the 1980s. Stargazing certainly isn’t new here, but it is flourishing. In July 2019, Dark Sky Project opened a stateof-the-art astronomy visitor centre on Tekapo’s lakefront to cater to the 200,000 stargazers the

town expects annually. Its centrepiece is an observatory dome which houses the famous 125 year old Brashear Telescope, a nine-metrehigh Victorian masterpiece, famously used in the 1800s to prove the existence of polar icecaps on Mars.

Near Taurus, she points out Pleiades, a cluster of seven stars that, in Maori culture, is called Matariki, which means “the eyes of God”. Its rising heralds the start of the Maori new year, says McClelland, and each star represents a specific part of Maori life.

“Our intention is to create a home for astronomy here in Tekapo,” explains Dark Sky Project co-founder Graeme Murray. “It’s estimated that 80 percent of the world’s population are now unable to see their own starry skies due to light pollution, which makes the preservation and promotion of locations where our stars can still be seen so important.”

“Stargazing and astronomy are rooted in all of our cultures from as far back as we know, which is why they continue to be relevant and important today, both from a cultural perspective and a scientific one,” she explains.

Before venturing to peer through the observatory’s five indoor and outdoor telescopes, McClelland guides us through the southern winter constellations, and we crane our necks skyward to join the stars she points out with a laser pen: The Crux, also known as the Southern Cross, which is frequently used for navigation, Orion and his dog, Canis Major, a constellation that contains Sirius, the brightest star in the whole sky, and Taurus, the bull.

Malaysia Airlines operates eight times weekly flights from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Auckland (AKL), New Zealand.

•_Nov 2019_Explore-Astrotourism02.indd 40

McClelland also points out other celestial sights, 2 visible without a telescope, including Coalsack Nebula, a dark cloud of gas and dust, located 600 light years away, and Andromeda, our nearest neighbouring galaxy, which is visible in the Southern Hemisphere from October to December. Located a staggering 2.5 million light years away, Andromeda is the farthest object that can be seen from Earth with the naked eye. Through telescopes, including the MOA, the largest in New Zealand, we eyeball Jupiter, Saturn and its rings, and the swirling colours of Orion Nebula, a star-making ball of gas and dust, which looks like a science-fiction special effect. We also get a closer look at the famous Jewel Box star cluster, distinguishable with the naked eye but dazzling through a powerful lens.

As our mountain-top stargazing experience comes to a close, McClelland sweeps her arm overhead and asks us to take a moment to consider a world without starlight; because she says this is very much a reality for much of the population today. “Millions of children across the world will never see a star, yet alone appreciate the Milky Way,” she says. “And the sad fact is that light pollution is causing all of us to lose our connection to the night sky, which is a deeply primal connection. Our ancestors have looked to the stars for centuries for navigation, folklore, seasons and more. The stars are a connection to the soul, to the past, to the world. If we lose that – and we are losing it – we lose something far more important than a view.” ■

Regularly listed as one of the world’s most liveable places, Melbourne is a treasure trove of arts and culture. The city’s calendar is filled with creative events throughout the year, be it in theatre, music or the performing arts, and the cityscape is dotted with museums, galleries, as well as art installations and colourful murals at every corner. For Melburnians, these are part and parcel of everyday life – but tourists are increasingly flocking to the city to experience it for themselves.

Pure Wizardry 2019 has been an exciting year for Australian fans of Harry Potter, as the critically acclaimed Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play made its debut in Melbourne in February, taking up a twoyear residency at the historical Princess Theatre. The eighth instalment in the series, it is based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany. The play is shown in two parts, each lasting about three hours, and is meant to be seen in order on the same day (a matinee and an evening show) or on two consecutive evenings. The Australian production includes a crew of 70 and cast of 42, comprising new and veteran actors from Australia and New Zealand. During our visit, the excitement in the crowd is palpable, even for the non-‘Potterheads’ in our group. Outside the theatre, people dressed in black robes, pointy hats and their respective Hogwarts house colours chatter away, waving

wands. For some, watching the play fulfils a lifelong dream of finally seeing their favourite fictional universe brought to life on stage. The Cursed Child continues the story of Harry Potter, who is now an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, and a husband and father to three school-age children. While he grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: that sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places. True to the fantastical world of Harry Potter, the play is a magical experience from start to finish, perfectly capturing the imagination and wonder that makes Harry Potter such a global phenomenon.

Through the clever use of lights, smoke, props and the overall stage, even the most sceptical adult will lean forward and wonder how wands light up in the darkness and brooms ‘soar’ into the air, or how actors appear and disappear from the stage as if by magic. Set pieces are marvellously grand and intricate, such as a scene involving a ‘moving’ train that will have audiences glued to the edge of their seats. It is truly a sensory spectacle for the ages, and one you won’t find anywhere else in the Southern Hemisphere.

Cultural Gems Like its trams, Melbourne’s laneways are an iconic part of the city’s culture and identity, many of them dating back to the Victorian era. Originally used for horses and carts, they were born out of practicality, as a population boom in the 19th century led to a need for an

easier way to access buildings and cut across to other parts of the city. As time went on, the laneways developed a seedy reputation as slums, where crime, homelessness and prostitution ran rampant. In the 1990s, thanks to efforts by the local government and heritage organisations, the laneways were cleaned up, attracting businesses and residents back to the area. Today, a laneway address is highly coveted. Their secluded locations, often tucked away from the main thoroughfare, have also added to their charm. You never know what you might stumble across while exploring the narrow paths, be it clothing boutiques, artisan shops, art galleries, hole-inthe-wall cafés or hidden bars.

Perhaps the best-known laneway is AC/DC Lane, named after the biggest name in rock to come out of Australia. The street is a tribute to these musical icons, with the brick walls of the adjacent buildings papered over with band announcements and show posters, alongside music-themed murals and graffiti. This is also where visitors will find Cherry Bar, one of the first establishments in the area to have kickstarted the laneway lifestyle, and a beloved venue for rock n’ roll acts since the 1990s. Another popular laneway to visit is Hosier Lane. Credited for popularising Melbourne’s street art across the globe, it is a dazzling and colourful showcase of stencils, murals and installations from local and international artists alike. On your way there, stop for photos at Flinders Street Station, a grand-looking Art Nouveau-style building and the central point of Melbourne’s rail system since 1854. Locals might tell you to ‘meet under the clocks’, referring to the row of clocks that sit above the main steps of the station. Inseparable from the laneways are the shopping arcades, essentially early forms of shopping centres that have endured to this day. Block Arcade is Melbourne’s most historical and posh arcade. Spectacularly grand in appearance, it contains an array of the city’s most exclusive retailers, offering fashion as well as jewellery and giftware, leather goods, handmade toys, shoes and cosmetics. Visitors can also drop by the Royal Arcade, Melbourne’s oldest, which features Gog and Magog – two folklore giants of ancient Britain – who strike the time each hour.

National Icon Located along St Kilda’s Road in Melbourne’s Southbank neighbourhood, the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is Australia’s oldest, largest and most visited museum, receiving 3.3 million visitors from 2017 to 2018. The building itself is a work of art, with a cascading water wall that greets visitors at the entrance. Step into the cavernous central atrium,

There are four floors at NGV, featuring over 75,000 works of art that include European, Asian, Oceanic and American art. The collection is diverse, spanning paintings and photography to drawings, textiles, sculptures, antiquities and modern artwork. Some of the gallery’s most famous pieces include an early cast of Rodin’s The Thinker, Picasso’s Weeping Woman, as well as works by European greats such as Rembrandt and Monet. The NGV’s Australian art collection covers Australian Aboriginal art and artefacts, Australian colonial art, Australian Impressionist art, as well as modern and contemporary art. There is also a sizable shop on the ground floor, which carries souvenirs, art and design books and catalogues, in addition to accessories and jewellery by local artisans. It’s not just a place for art aficionados. There are free guided tours – great for first-timers – as well as programmes such as NGV Kids and NGV Teens, with exhibitions and activities geared towards families and young art enthusiasts. Entry is free, but special exhibitions may require a fee.

One Of A Kind

The Lyons have been avid art collectors since the 1990s, and currently own one of the largest private collections of contemporary Australian art, with over 300 works representing more than 60 emerging and established local artists. The idea for the Housemuseum came up in the mid-2000s, when the family was looking into a new home. It was inspired by the private art collections housed and displayed in residential settings such as the Sir John Soane’s Museum in London and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.

Looking up at the ceiling, one sees a literal wall of text clad in timber veneered panels, comprising over 35,000 words in printed small text that come together to spell out ‘ART’. Yueji describes this to be like a ‘family diary or journal’, documenting the family’s story. If you look closely, you will find the names of artists and philosophers, places the family has visited, the names of the girls’ best friends, and even text in Chinese, Yueji’s first language.

The Lyon Housemuseum is open for prebooked tours on designated days each year, but visitors who’d like to view parts of the extensive collection that are not on display in the home can also visit the adjacent Housemuseum Galleries. Essentially an extension of the original Housemuseum, the modern gallery is open to the public six days a week and is designed for large-scale contemporary art works and installations. ■

Greeting visitors at the living room are two adorable trucks by Patricia Piccinini – one in pink, the other in blue – both popular with the couple’s daughters when they were young.

Next to the kitchen is the White Cube, a large central space featuring rotating exhibitions, while at the back of the house is the Black Cube, a dark and cavernous room which showcases video art. Coming to the Music Room, there’s a towering hybrid pipe organ designed by Corbett himself, which he will play if he is hosting the tour. Visitors may explore most parts of the house, but closed doors, framed photographs and trinkets curated from the family’s travels are reminders that this is as much a private home as it is a place to showcase art.

“We wanted a space that would be able to house both the collection and the family, and at the same time, share our passion for art with others,” says Yueji. As she takes us on a tour of the building, she explains the significance and meaning behind select pieces – but also peppers her narrative with interesting stories and anecdotes of family life.

Tucked within a quiet suburb along Cotham Road is the Lyon Housemuseum, a unique building that blurs the line between the public and the private. At once an art gallery and a home, it was designed by architect Corbett Lyon, where he resides with wife Yueji and daughters Jaqlin and Carlin.

Scents of the

Rainforest Commercialising essential oils harvested from the Sarawak rainforest to empower indigenous communities.

The sun was low in the sky and the rainforest was growing dark as Margarita Naming and her team from the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) trudged back to the village. Suddenly, a zesty scent filled the air. To many Malaysians, a sudden sultry scent in the jungle is a signal to hurry away without looking back. But to Margarita’s team, it was cause to stop to take a closer look – their exhaustion immediately forgotten, their senses awakened and their curiosity piqued. The invigorating scent, reminiscent of citronella or lemongrass, was emanating from tiny berry-like fruits being picked by their forest guide and local medicinal plant expert, the late Taie Puret, from a small tree. According to Taie, several ethnic groups in Sarawak such as the Lun Bawang and Bidayuh have, for generations, used these berries as a spicy condiment to eat with rice as well as a natural remedy to ease stomach and back aches. Taie was from the Lun Bawang community. Excited, the team took several cuttings from the tree, known as tenem to the Lun Bawang and pahkak to the Bidayuh, and brought them back to SBC’s headquarters in Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, for further analysis. This scent-filled jungle walk had taken place in 2005 as part of SBC’s effort to document the use of the indigenous plant with a scientific name of Litsea cubeba by the different ethnic groups in Sarawak and to preserve this traditional knowledge. Margarita’s team had visited the mountains of east Sarawak to document the traditional plant use of the Lun Bawang community, a small ethnic group of Sarawak. The Lun Bawang are mountain-dwellers with deep knowledge of the highland rainforests where they have lived for generations.

_Nov 2019_Explore-Rainforest Essential Oils03.indd 48

On that trek guided by Taie and his son Ukong Taie, the team mapped out the indigenous plants commonly used in the villages of Long Telingan and Long Kerebangan, both located over three hours’ away by road from the nearest town. Margarita remembered clambering up and down muddy slopes, walking for hours to search for plants used locally as medicines, food and other purposes. “We kept asking ‘are we there yet?’,” she recalled, laughing. Back in their labs in Kuching, the team set out to analyse the chemistry of the Litsea cubeba berries and other cuttings. To their excitement, they found its oil composition to be markedly different from similar Litsea plants found in the highlands of China and Taiwan, where they are also used for medicinal purposes. This allowed SBC to register the local tree, Sarawak Litsea, as unique to Sarawak for Intellectual Property protection. The team also found the Sarawak Litsea oil to have anti-microbial properties as effective as tea tree oil, while emitting a revitalising, fresh and vibrant scent. These discoveries started them off on a long journey of research and development, which took over 10 years until the Sarawak Litsea oil was turned into delightfully-scented personal care products. Marketed under the brand-name LitSara®, a combination of Litsea and Sarawak, the range includes soaps, body wash, shampoo, handwash, aromatherapy oil, sniff jar and air freshener. Litsea oil is also available as pure essential oils for diffusers, and soon, Litsarabased insect repellent sprays and biodegradable wipes will also be on the shelves. This essential oil’s journey from jungle to market has been remarkable because SBC strove to ensure that all benefits are shared equitably with the local communities. This is in keeping with the global standards set by the 1992 Rio

de Janerio Convention on Biological Diversity and the 2010 Nagoya Protocol, an addendum to the Convention, which recognises the right of indigenous communities to manage the biological resources in their area, and to benefit from its commercialisation. “We wanted to ensure that there is community engagement right from the start, to make the local community a part of the decision-making and development process,” said Dr Yeo Tiong Chia, Chief Executive Officer of SBC, adding that the communities receive a share of the benefits, in both monetary and non-monetary terms. In non-monetary terms, the documentation of the local traditional knowledge with full acknowledgement of its ownership is of great value to the community. Subsequently, any new insights derived from their traditional knowledge are also shared with the community.

In the case of the Litsea essential oils, SBC holds regular workshops to share new information on cultivating and nurturing the Litsea trees. It also holds classes on extracting essential oils from the fruits and leaves, and soap-making sessions to enable the locals to make their own products from the oils. Monetary benefits come into play once the products are commercialised. For the Litsea products, the SBC buys the essential oils produced by the locals at a fair price, and subsequently returns a percentage of the product sales to the community. Today, seven villages are involved in sustainably producing the Litsea essential oil, with a

production target of 100 litres a year. Besides the original Lun Bawang villages, the SBC has started working with the Kelabit, Iban and Bidayuh communities once it was established that they also use the plant. The unassuming Litsea cubeba tree – and its heavenly-scented tiny fruits – has earned a place of pride in the ranks of essential oils, having come a long way from that first whiff of its zesty scent in a dank rainforest. ■

Staging A Quiet

Revolution Like his mentor Yotam Ottolenghi, Ang Ling Chee is on a mission to prove that healthy food can be exciting and delicious. Words Alexandra Wong | Photography SooPhye

goingplacesmagazine.com | 50 | November 2019

A lifetime of unforgettable memories has made Ang Ling Chee the chef he is today. Of these, one stands out: Seeking his fortune in London during the mid-2000s, Ling answered an advertisement for a midnight baker. The job’s graveyard hours suited his purpose as he was taking English classes in the morning. His nerves deserted him, however, when he showed up at the advertiser’s premises in Notting Hill; the beautiful restaurant seemed completely out of his league. Before he could turn and flee, a tall man stepped out with a cup of coffee – meant for Ling. It was the restaurant’s owner, Yotam Ottolenghi. Ling flunked the interview big time, unsurprisingly, he says. “They asked me to put on an apron and tested me out in the kitchen,” he recalls. “I didn’t even know what a muffin was then.” Nevertheless, the owner’s hospitality left such a deep impression that he called back three days later to ask for a second chance. Ling went on to become a core member of Ottolenghi’s team and helped him expand his restaurant chain across London. “Years after my interview, I asked Yotam what he saw in me. He said I demonstrated persistence, the hunger to learn and the willingness to work hard.”

Humble Beginnings Life could have turned out very differently for Ling, who grew up in a small Malaysian village in Bukit Mertajam town in Penang state. At the age of 10, he worked at a noodle stall after school to earn pocket money. The early exposure sparked his interest in the food business, but when Ling broached his desire to join a cooking school after completing secondary education, “you should have heard the silence at the family dinner table,” he describes ruefully. “Cooking was not seen as a proper job for a man.” The dutiful Asian son enrolled in an engineering course and worked as a technical engineer for a

space that recalls the relaxed vibe of London’s Hyde Park. Eighty percent of its menu is plant-based, though there are well-executed meat-based dishes (try the lamb kofta with tzatziki sauce and grilled scallops with parsley oil) and decadent desserts (including vegan and gluten-free options) to tempt you. “We want to cater to all Malaysians,” says Ling.

computer subcontractor. But after three years, the 25-year-old longed for more. He sold off his possessions and left for the United Kingdom, where he cleaned fryers and grills at McDonald’s by night to pay for rent and school fees. “It was not easy, but I loved it. At school, I had friends from Kyrgyzstan, Kenya, and many other countries. Having lived in a small village all my life, London seemed so vibrant and multicultural.”

Exciting New Start Months later, meeting Ottolenghi opened the door to another exciting world. “From making pastries and cakes – we did a lot of macaroons – to working in the hot kitchen, it was a great place to train as a chef and future restaurant owner,” he recalls. Here, he also developed a passion for the vegetable-focused cooking that his sifu is famous for. “Yotam always emphasised that cooking begins with studying and understanding an ingredient’s behaviour. You have to respect the ingredients." Though Ling frequently credits Ottolenghi for being a generous teacher, there is no denying the Malaysian’s obvious talent. Ottolenghi frequently picked his brain to devise new recipes for his restaurant. “Yotam liked to refresh his menu to keep things exciting,” he says. Ling did so well that his employer sponsored his enrolment into a culinary arts programme at Hammersmith & West London College so that he could join the team as a permanent staff (a formal certificate is a prerequisite to obtaining a working visa). After spending nearly 10 years in the United Kingdom, Ling was ready for a change. Not speaking a word of Russian, he accepted an offer to consult for Correas, one of Russia's biggest Western fine-dining restaurant chains. A

•_Nov 2019_Chef's Cut.indd 51

3

two-week stint stretched to two years, during which he trained Correas’ huge stable of chefs from more than 40 outlets. With his pedigree, Ling could have gone anywhere, but for his next move, he chose to join his wife – an English-language teacher he met in London – in Japan. After a two-year break to look after their newborn twins, he ran a popular Western healthy-eating concept restaurant in Osaka.

Full Circle Then in 2018, the dice of fate rolled again. His cousin, Ewen Lim, a successful entrepreneur and health enthusiast, had a vision for popularising healthy eating in Malaysia and needed a creative partner. Who else would fit the bill? In retrospect, Ling's return to Malaysia has a lot to do with timing. "This may come as a surprise to fans, but back in the day, it was an uphill struggle for Ottolenghi to popularise his vegetable-heavy, small-plates dining concept in London. Many nights when we faced an empty restaurant at dinner time, I would ask him worriedly, ‘What are we going to do?’ Yotam advised me to be patient and give our customers time to accept our food.”

These bold, unexpected pairings produce complex, full-bodied flavours that have led to great acclaim, numerous offers to open other branches, and walk-ins from personalities Ling never dreamed of meeting in person. “I had to pinch myself when Marina Mahathir and Jimmy Choo came in,” he says. However, glowing reviews and celebrity fans are not how Ling measures his success. Going beyond restaurant walls, Parklife has sought out like-minded partners to collaborate on workshops and programmes to inspire healthy lifestyles, with more to come, and the restaurant sources nearly 80 percent of its ingredients locally. These practices go back to the chefowner’s personal philosophy as a chef: Ling feels a deep responsibility to educate the public as well as to feed them well. The simplest way to do it is “by proving healthy food doesn’t have to be dull.”

goingplacesmagazine.com | 51 | November 2019

A convergence of Ling’s Mediteranean, Middle Eastern and European influences, the menu emphasises his imaginative use of spices and optimal cooking methods to bring out the underrated pleasures of fresh produce. Think roasted brinjals with Italian herbs and tahini sauce; shiitake and oyster mushrooms with barley and parmesan; butternut squash with pomegranate molasses and nuts.

Sounds like Ling intends to start a quiet revolution, just as his mentor did years ago. ■

1. – 3. Nearly 80 percent of Parklife's ingredients are sourced locally 4. Its menu is mostly plant based but the restaurant has well-executed meat dishes too

4

And by 2018, the world had changed. Healthy eating was coming into the mainstream, and more importantly, chefs were seen as arbiters of change.

Proudly Plant-Based There’s no restaurant quite like Parklife in Kuala Lumpur. Vegetables are front and centre: platters of colourful salads displayed along the restaurant’s floor-to-ceiling windows catch your eye even before you walk into the bright, buzzy

Rediscover Old-Time Charm In New Homes Ever find yourself longing for bygone days when children could roam freely in the neighbourhood or when neighbours really looked out for one another? Or when different generations of a family lived under one roof to see the children and grandchildren grow up? At The Mulia Residences, this can become a reality. A 50-acre development specially planned to cultivate a close-knit community, strengthen family ties and provide a sense of well-being, the dream is made sweeter by the architectural design that adds rustic charm from the past.

it is for a stroll under the shades of mature, tropical trees or a jog around the central lake. Here, children can roam safely with walkways paved away from the streets and traffic. Designed to bring people together, the development is dotted with neighbourly spots such as rest areas called pangkins (gazebo) where neighbours can come together to play games, tell stories or just to chat. Juxtaposing its old-time charms, The Mulia Residences appeals with components of modern living such as having a clubhouse, a gym, swimming pool, playground and more.

Inspired by the traditional kampung house – a design that best tackles the Malaysian climate – the premium terrace homes at The Mulia Residences look like semi-detached houses at first glance. Employing an innovative use of space, it features fewer walls, which not only maximises air flow to cool the home naturally but also encourages family interaction.

Just outside the town of Kuala Kangsar in northern Perak state lies Sayong, where a curious cottage industry has survived for over 300 years. This is the birthplace of the labu sayong, a traditional water pitcher specifically moulded from the earth in the district.

Labu sayong is typically made to store water, either in the kitchen or for daily use. Given its slightly porous nature that cools any water it contains, villagers believe that drinking from it has health benefits. Most people mistake

When rice husk is thrown away and left in the soil, the pottery burned on it will become black, shiny and hard,” explains Zulkifly Amir bin Hashim, who owns a labu sayong and ceramic enterprise in Kuala Kangsar.

The Forefather of Ceramics Zulkifly’s knowledge of labu sayong was inherited from his grandmother. Despite studying engineering in Japan, he eventually started a family in his hometown, moulding a career out of an old tradition. In 2009, he turned it into a full-time business, with two full-time staff and several part-timers. “The craft industry had become developed then. So we thought we should also go into it. The basics are there, the raw materials are there, and there are still many practising craftsmen in Sayong.”

It is no surprise then that labu sayong is the forefather of ceramic production in Sayong, now one of the largest in Malaysia. There are more than 50 ceramic enterprises in the area that have since developed innovative ways to increase yield. Only five still produce labu sayong by hand on the side. To do so, Zulkifly enlists the help of older women in the community like Kak Marjenah, who specialises in moulding pottery by hand on a thrower’s wheel. She also gives demonstrations and lessons whenever there are requests.

Forged in Fire Back in the day, the clay would be arranged on firewood and fired for several hours until it reaches a peak temperature of 800°C. Skilled potters use their instincts to determine when it is ready. Fresh from the fire, it would then be rolled in rice husks to give it that signature ebony colour. Traditional techniques add to its durability and give the craftsmen more control over the design. However, the turnaround time is

Labu sayong is typically made to store water, either in the kitchen or for daily use. Given its slightly porous nature that cools any water it contains, villagers believe that drinking from it has health benefits. mengekalkan penggunaan teknik tradisional secara sampingan.

much higher, and it is at the mercy of the weather. These days, the water pitcher can be made by the hundreds using moulds, then trimmed and coloured for decorative purposes. While some still use labu sayong to store water, many prefer to display the handicraft at home. According to Zulkifly, traditional labu sayong can be sold for about RM20-RM25 (USD4.80-USD6). Those made on a larger scale using modern methods go for between RM15-RM18 (USD3.60-USD4.30). He shares that the greatest challenge is public awareness and publicity. Modern ceramics or Chinese porcelains are glazed for an attractive, glass-like quality. The ceramics in Kuala Kangsar remain down to earth, as it were, in their appearance. To overcome this, he welcomes people to learn about the craft and try it for themselves in his workshop. He is hopeful that as the craft industry evolves, more people will become aware of Sayong’s flourishing ceramic culture. There is still a place in Malaysia for this icon of Perak. ■

65 News & Updates

Colourful Ride Malaysia Airlines was part of Keretapi Sarong, an annual flash mob where members of the public discover and get acquainted with the public train network by going on a series of curated routes while dressed in the traditional sarong. Organised by LOCCO and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, the event commemorated the birth of Malaysia on 16 September. More than 4,000 people turned up at designated stations in their most creative sarong outfits and rode the trains to Dataran Merdeka, where they enjoyed a variety of cultural performances.

Repeat Success

goingplacesmagazine.com | 67 | November 2019

Malaysia Airlines has once again been recognised as one of the most trusted brands in the region, receiving the Platinum Award at the 2019 Putra Brand Awards, in the Transportation, Travel & Tourism category. The award marks the fourth consecutive time Malaysia Airlines has received a Putra Brand Award. Other recognitions that the airline has received this year include Gold for Best Performance Campaign and Bronze for Best Use of Data at the Malaysian Digital Association (MDA) d-Awards, Best Airline in Asia at PATWA International Travel Awards, and one of the World’s Most Improved Airlines at SKYTRAX World Airline Awards.

Keeping The Peace Malaysia Airlines was proud to fly the Malaysian Battalion 850-7 (MALBATT 850-7) to Lebanon, to serve for a year under the United Nations Interim Force (UNIFIL) peacekeeping mission. The battalion comprising 850 military personnel, including 30 members of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, was deployed in four stages. Having undergone three months of special training, MALBATT 850-7 will replace MALBATT 850-6, which ended its UNIFIL mission after a 12-month service.

New Destinations Malaysia Airlines has opened new routes to Solo and Pekanbaru, its fifth and sixth Indonesian destinations. Passengers on the inaugural flights were treated to goodie bags to commemorate the occasion. “Pekanbaru is the capital city of the Riau Province, which is an economic centre for the country, while Solo is the historic royal capital on the island of Java. These routes will enable closer Indo-Malaysian relations, especially in their respective tourism industries,” says Malaysia Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer, Izham Ismail. The new flights are also in line with the recent launch of the Visit Malaysia 2020 campaign, which promotes tourism as a pillar of the economy. Malaysia Airlines will be flying twice weekly to the two cities.

SAFETY + SERVICE INFO

CABIN LUGGAGE HANDLING Passenger and crew safety onboard our flights is our highest priority. In compliance with the airline’s policy and in observing Occupational, Safety and Health Regulations requirements, cabin crew are no longer required to stow passengers’ hand luggages into the overhead stowage compartment. This is to minimise occupational hazard and ergonomic risks faced by cabin crew in the aircraft. Cabin crew on duty will, however, assist passengers travelling with infants, young passengers travelling alone, the elderly, and passengers with reduced mobility. Passengers who are fit and in good health must carry, stow and secure their own hand luggages on board. Hand luggage exceeding the 7kg weight limit is required to be checked in before boarding.

PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PED) For safety reasons and in line with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia guidelines, mobile phones and all PEDs must be switched off once the aircraft has moved out of bay/gate for departure. Whilst cruising, devices placed in flight mode may be used. The devices must again be switched off during the approach for landing until the aircraft is parked at the terminal building. Devices transmitting strong signals must remain switched off throughout the flight, until disembarkation. The Captain may prohibit the use of devices that can interfere with the aircraft’s system.

LITHIUM BATTERIES Lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries for portable electronic devices (PEDs), including medical devices must not exceed 2g for lithium metal batteries and 100Wh for lithium ion batteries. All spare batteries, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for PEDs must be carried in passengers’ carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. For PEDs containing non-spillable batteries, they must be 12V or less or 100Wh or less. A maximum of two spare batteries may be carried. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.

NO-SMOKING POLICY Smoking, including the use of electronic cigarettes, is prohibited on all flights.

ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES Electronic cigarettes must be carried on one’s person or in carry-on baggage only. Recharging of the device in-flight is not permitted.

COMFORT & CARE Personal care, baby paraphernalia and first aid treatment are available upon request.

ZERO TOLERANCE OF ABUSE We value courteousness. Any form of threat, verbal abuse or violence towards our staff will be taken seriously. We are committed to supporting anyone who has been the victim of an assault.

FILM REVIEWS

WANT HELP WITH WHAT TO WATCH THIS MONTH? FILMMAKER AND DIRECTOR KAM RASLAN MAKES THE CASE FOR THESE MOVIES.

SHAFT goingplacesmagazine.com | 80 | November 2019

THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN THE LION KING For me, The Lion King is the perfect movie to watch on a flight, because I really wanted to see it, but what with birthdays and weddings, I just couldn’t make it to the cinema when it was on. And now, I can watch it on a flight. With even better photo-realistic computer animation than Disney’s recent Jungle Book (also helmed by white-hot director Jon Favreau), with a stellar cast including James Earl Jones, Beyoncé, Seth Rogen, John Oliver and Donald Glover, and with an enormous budget of USD260 million, this new Lion King promises much. Grossing USD1.6 billion, it has become the most successful animated movie of all time (Frozen had to let it go), but does it match the 1994 original? Not only is the animation astonishing, it suggests that ever-evolving computer animation is going to reach unbelievable heights, and very soon. It paints the landscape with the realism of a nature documentary while also carrying the artistry of the dazzling Broadway version. Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar is a revelation, and with a voice like that, he would have my vote as the new Lion King. Both the old and the new Lion King are not my favourite Disney musicals (Little Mermaid for me). I just can’t understand why these aggressive carnivores never eat anything, not even snacking on an impala. But that musical might be a bit too terrifying for kids. So apart from that, The Lion King is the perfect movie for a flight

_Nov 2019_GPE02.indd 80

I really didn’t think I was going to like this film. It has a talking dog, which is always a disaster because, well, pets can’t actually talk. The beauty of pets is that they are not human, they are something better than that, and yet, no matter how much we love them and miss them when they are gone, they’re also not nearly as bright as we imagine them to be. Pets live in the moment; they don’t dwell on the past or think about the distant future. My pets had dignity, playfulness and gave unwavering companionship. I want to see that, so I didn’t think I’d like a movie about a talking dog. And yet, as soon as Kevin Costner’s voice-over began as the elderly dog Enzo, I was utterly gripped and moved, remembering my pets, my life, and I really needed to scratch my cat. The Art Of Racing In The Rain is a simple tale of a young race car driver, his career, his loves and deep tragedy, all spent with his dog Enzo. Without his dog, this young man’s life would be yet another anonymous domestic drama, but for his dog (as these things are for all our pets) this is the only story in the world because these are the only lives that matter. We never see him, but this movie is all about Kevin Costner. His sage-like voice-over imbues the dog Enzo with an incongruous humanity but also with a dog’s true nature of living in the moment, like a race car driver who concentrates purely on the turn ahead. Costner’s voice make this dog’s old soul believable and dignified. If you’ve ever had and lost a pet, then you will enjoy The Art Of Racing In The Rain.

Samuel L. Jackson has played the character of Shaft before, but the original was Richard Roundtree who played the leather-coated New York private detective in a series of films in the 1970s. Shaft was the most famous of a genre of movies called ‘blacksploitation’, which offered black heroes, both male and female, who were unapologetically black for a mainly black audience. Shaft became successful with a wider audience because the hero was so cool and because the theme song is possibly the greatest theme song ever. It’s hard to imagine where Quentin Tarantino would find any inspiration if Shaft didn’t exist. For the remakes of Shaft, there could only have been Samuel L. Jackson in the title role, but his first outing was silly, loud and pointless, with the movie striving too hard to be cool without investing in creating interesting characters. But this new Shaft is funny and exciting, with more up-to-date sensitivities without striving to be too cool (I don’t think anybody walks away from an explosion in slow motion). In this new Shaft, the great detective is suddenly reunited with his FBI son whom he hasn’t seen since he was a baby. And then later, we add another generation of Shafts with the return of the original, Richard Roundtree. It’s the kind of movie where the plot is not very important, where the bad guys never seem to be able to shoot straight, but the good guys do. Basically, the movie is just that – great fun.

The Lion King, The Art Of Racing In The Rain and Shaft are playing onboard. Check your in-flight entertainment system for channel information.

In this latest chapter of the film franchise, JJ, also known as John Shaft Jr., is a cybersecurity expert with a degree from MIT. However, he needs the help of his father – the legendary private investigator John Shaft II – to navigate Harlem’s heroin-infested underbelly and investigate his best friend’s untimely death. Despite their personality differences, Shaft agrees to help so that he can settle a score with a certain drug lord.

Told from the perspective of Enzo, the Golden Retriever, this is the story of Denny, an ambitious race car driver who meets and marries the love of his life, Eve. Enzo spends his years observing his master Denny and his struggles in pursuing his ambitions as a race car driver while maintaining his relationship with Eve’s parents, who disapprove of his career choice.

Demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren lock the possessed doll Annabelle in the artefacts room in their home, placing her ‘safely’ behind sacred glass and enlisting a priest’s holy blessing. But an unholy night of horror awaits as Annabelle awakens the evil spirits in the room, setting their sights on the Warrens’ daughter Judy and her friends.

FILM TALK Two Sisters is playing onboard. Check the movie section in your in-flight entertainment system for channel information.

LIM MEI FEN Your character Mei Yue is pretty different from your real-life personality. What did you have to do to really bring out the character? Indeed, we are very different. The director and I worked together to build a solid backstory for the character, which I think of as the ‘soul’. A week prior to filming, I ‘wore’ Mei Yue’s soul and explored her world, both in rehearsals and in my daily life. That helped me to tap into her world and enabled me to deliver more genuine emotions from the character. I could feel her emotions, her fear, her dilemma and her struggles. You could say that my body was

just a vessel for her ‘soul’ when the camera was rolling. What was it like working with director James Lee, executive producer Amir Muhammad and the rest of the team? James and Amir have both been my idols since my secondary school years. I am more than honoured to be able to work with them. It was a dream come true for me. Even though it’s not a huge team, it worked well for the scale of this film. I also liked how James gave some degree of creative freedom to the team. Everyone, including the actors, got to voice out new ideas. As a director who knows precisely what he wants, James will then pick the ideas that work the best with his vision. I am beyond grateful to have been a part of this amazing production.

JAMES LEE What gave you the idea for the plot of Two Sisters? The idea was inspired by an article on the Internet regarding the psychiatric condition of a twin sister, where she kept confusing her own identity as that of the other twin sister. From there, I came up with the idea of using it to create a plot for the movie infused with supernatural thriller elements.

goingplacesmagazine.com | 87 | November 2019

In Two Sisters, Mei Yue (right) is discharged from a psychiatric hospital into the custody of her older sister Mei Xi, and the two move back into their onceabandoned family home. But when Mei Yue starts seeing unexplained eerie apparitions, dark secrets from the family’s past start to emerge. This month, Going Places speaks to actress Lim Mei Fen, who plays Mei Yue, and writer/ director James Lee on the film’s production.

Did the cast and crew succeed in bringing your vision of the story to life? Yes, the team worked very hard in such a limited timeframe to bring this story to life. Both actresses managed to take an indepth approach to the development of their characters even though we had a short period of time to rehearse. They had great chemistry with each other and managed to convincingly portray the relationship between the two sisters, Mei Yue and Mei Xi. What is the take-home message that you wished to convey to your audience through this movie? In the end, this movie is about the consequences of the terrible deeds carried out by humans, leading to the horrific aftermath that eventually affects the next generation. The things that are scary are not ghosts or the supernatural but the actions of the living – the things that abusive people do to others. ■

Held at the Sentul Depot, the celebration was attended by local celebrities such as Awal Ashaari, Scha Alyahya and Alif Satar. The campaign aims to reward shoppers at Malaysia’s international airports and is in line with the company’s initiative to transform local airports from transportation hubs into premier lifestyle destinations. Reducing Wastage Goji Kitchen + Bar, the all-day dining restaurant at Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park, has become the first five-star hotel restaurant in the world to achieve The PLEDGE, an independently verified standard designed to tackle the global issue of food waste. Aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, The PLEDGE aims to combat world hunger, reduce waste and mitigate climate change. Strategies such as food waste monitoring systems, new food preparation techniques, engaging with guests and educating in-house associates helped Goji Kitchen + Bar reduce its food waste by 27.4 tonnes in three-and-a-half months, offsetting 68.4 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in the process.

Giving Back In the spirit of goodwill around Malaysia Day on 16 September, Nilai Springs Resort Hotel invited 89 children from three charity homes for a day of good food and fun activities as part of the hotel’s annual corporate social responsibility initiatives towards the underprivileged. In line with the hotel’s corporate philosophy of ‘We Care, We Share’, its multiple charity drives held throughout the year raised a total of RM30,000 (USD7,100), donated to the three homes to help ease their financial strain.
