Art For The Senses Most fine art museums have a ground rule of ‘look, don’t touch’. But in Tokyo, Japan, where the world’s first digital art museum recently opened, every piece is an adventure waiting to be discovered. The MORI Building Digital Art Museum is home to over 50 interactive artworks housed in a 10,000-square-metre space, where visitors can ‘walk’ in a sea of stars, ‘bend’ space and time in a vortex, and experience a stunning Forest of Lamps, where dozens of lamps emit bright colours that ripple in response to the interaction between a person and a lamp.
Hidden Gem Did you know that the state of Sarawak in Malaysia has a legendary monster crocodile? It is said to still lurk in the murky waters of the Rajang River, the longest river in Malaysia. The state is also known as ‘Bumi Kenyalang’ or ‘Land of the Hornbills’, where eight of the world’s 54 species of the bird can be found. To help you understand Sarawak better, we uncover some interesting facts about this beautiful land blessed with a rich ecosystem and biodiversity as well as an incredibly diverse culture and heritage.
Animals Roam Free Even on a guided trip to the savannah or a wildlife reserve, it’s often difficult to spot animals in the wild. There are however, islands and areas that by chance or design have become sanctuaries for some animals to roam freely without fear of being caged, hunted or hurt. Check out our list of four magical places in Japan where you can have an upclose and personal encounter with cats, deer, rabbits and even foxes.

maps that you would plot the flight’s journey on. Of course it is all digital now, uploaded on screens. Technology moves at an exhilarating pace. The speed and pace is often faster than what we can actually consume and deploy in our day-to-day life. In any business, we need to embrace this fast, and empowering consumers is definitely the future. At Malaysia Airlines, we have been investing heavily in technology and digitisation. We have been aggressively introducing new digital services to enhance the travelling experience of the connected customers of today. This includes our latest service on WhatsApp where our guests may receive their flight booking confirmation and flight status directly through the messaging app. We are the first airline in Malaysia, and amongst the very few in the world, to integrate with the WhatsApp Business solution. We were also the first airline in Asia to roll out an interactive Facebook Messenger BOT, MHchat, which allows passengers to make bookings, payment and retrieve their flight itineraries. goingplacesmagazine.com | 8 | October 2018
We have several more in the pipeline which we will be progressively rolling out. This includes our very own internally-developed MHguardian, which will enable parents or guardians to track unaccompanied minors throughout their travel with Malaysia Airlines. The app, expected to be rolled out towards the end of the year, can also be extended to support unaccompanied elderly passengers and passengers who require special assistance. These digital innovations are of course all centered on the customer, to ensure a seamless and consistent experience across all touchpoints. Technology has made life more convenient. We are all more connected than ever before but, as any parent with a child and device knows, human interaction is also important. We use technology to make life easier but at Malaysia Airlines, we do not forget the warmth. Alongside digital advances, as the national carrier, we strive to ensure our service reflects the friendliness and humility that Malaysia is known for. Malaysian Hospitality is our brand promise and everything we do must reflect this.

Dear Guests, The first time in anything is always memorable, something that stays with you always, your first time driving or even on a plane. I still remember my first time flying a commercial aircraft. It was a Fokker 27 Friendship in Sabah. It was a great turboprop aircraft but there was no air-conditioning on ground. The cockpit got pretty hot! In those days pilots were given topographical maps, hard copy

the tram from one end of Hong Kong island to the other to soak up the city’s atmosphere. And let’s not forget retail therapy! You can buy anything in Hong Kong! But one of my happiest things to do on the weekend is exploring the neighbourhoods, especially the ones where you can still catch a glimpse of the real Hong Kong, for instance, in the Western District or in Kennedy Town. Here is where you will find East meets West. Old meets New. This inner-city charm is why I love Hong Kong, and forms the basis of our cover story this month. In her article, writer Jennifer Johnston takes us through Hong Kong’s best-loved neighbourhoods and what they have to offer.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 10 | October 2018
I had the privilege of interviewing Han Chong, the hugely successful Malaysian designer based in London for this month’s edition. In a few short years, his Self-Portrait fashion label has become a celebrity and royalty staple for its guipure lace and lattice-embroidered designs. But what stood out for me was his philosophy of creating designer fashion that’s accessible to everyone, not just the privileged few. I’d like to think it’s his Malaysian upbringing that has grounded him even after he found success. Turn to pages 34-37 to read the full interview.
Julie Goh Editor
Hong Kong is not for the faint-hearted. The city is densely
populated. People are constantly in your face and you have to queue for everything. When you have a population of more than 7.4 million living in an area of just 1,104 square kilometres, you’ve got to pick up the pace. I used to live in Hong Kong in the early 2000s. I loved the city’s fast-paced lifestyle. It kept me on the go the whole time, and according to research, people are happiest when they’re occupied. There is always something to do in Hong Kong if you want to. Work consumed me from Mondays to Fridays, but weekends were always filled with some leisurely activity or another. It could be spending time at the beach, hiking one of the many trails or riding
For something a little heartwarming, writer Josh Doyle reports that in April this year when North Korean leader Kim Jong-un crossed the military line into South Korea for the historic summit between the two countries, he brought with him Pyongyang Naengmyeon, a handmade buckwheat noodle dish served cold in beef, pork or chicken broth. His gesture sparked a craze for the noodles, leading to long queues outside cold noodle shops in South Korea and becoming a trending topic on social media. But more importantly, it solidified hopes among their people for a unification of the two Koreas. To know more of this very interesting story, read it on pages 42-45. We have more engaging stories in this month’s issue, including a travel guide to Mumbai if you’re planning a visit in the near future, the story of how Lee Che Liang, a chef, found success in London, and an article on a sustainable food catering service that’s empowering refugee families in Malaysia. We hope you will enjoy reading them. Happy travels, and see you next month! ■

Letter Of The Month Saya adalah seorang penjawat awam yang kerap menaiki pesawat MH sekiranya ada tugasan luar. Saya seorang mengalami masalah “fear of flying” dan pastinya majalah Going Places menjadi salah satu bahan untuk mententeramkan diri terutamanya apabila pesawat sedang “take off”. It was mid-way through the 2018 FIFA World Cup group stage matches that I came across a copy of Going Places during my flight from Kuala Lumpur to Miri, Sarawak. Impressed with the tournament quality so far and having a glimpse of the cities in the host country Russia on television, I was thrilled to find a travel guide focusing on Moscow. After reading the article, my perception of Russia being a very grey, cold and dull country changed and I suddenly had the urge to include Russia in my bucket list to visit. The Kremlin would be at the top of my list, with the building appearing in so many movies throughout the years, though usually associated with the bad guys! I also liked that there was a special feature on the World Cup itself in the magazine reminiscing on the history of the tournament, past winners and memorable matches that had been played, some which I remember watching live during my student days. I had wondered how far the stadiums were from each other since Russia is a huge country and I learned that all are situated on the west side of the country to ensure travelling times for the players would not be too taxing. The article served as a good appetiser going into the knockout stages. To top it all, a subtle recommendation was provided in the footnote to catch a documentary of the tournament in the in-flight entertainment system, which tied everything together to make a very enjoyable flight for me. It has been a while since I last flew with Malaysia Airlines. Hence, I was quite surprised to see the new and refreshed Going Places magazine. In the June issue, I was touched by the Editor’s Note, where she mentioned her Hari Raya experience of being reunited with her childhood neighbours. This reminded me of my own experience, where via Going Places, I was reunited with my long-lost friend as he was featured in the magazine. What a nice reunion it was for us! Content-wise, I find the magazine very informative; for example, the feature “Around the World in Five Eids” gave me an insight into how other Muslim communities around the world celebrate Eid. It was such an enlightening article. Such comparisons of different cultures should be highlighted more often. Another section that I like is “Chef’s Cut”. I might not be a chef, but I can at least try to cook like one with the recipes given! I would suggest such recipes be linked to QR codes, so that we can save them interactively for future use.

As I was passing through immigration on a recent trip back to Kuala Lumpur from Miri in Sarawak, I heard my name being called over the public address system. I walked quickly to the counter to check with the officer, who said that the key to my luggage was still attached to the lock of the bag. How careless of me! Upon reaching the loading bay, the officer smiled and told me to check if anything was missing before removing the key. While some travellers may complain about the airline mishandling their bags, I have witnessed a group of responsible officers who really cared about us. That’s why Malaysia Airlines will always be my preferred carrier. Thank you! LEE HUI YEE, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

A Taste of Xi’an Nestled in the heart of Mayfair in London is Murger HanHan, specialists in cuisines from Xi’an City, home of the Terracotta Warriors. The signature ‘murger’ – stewed meat in crispy bread – is the Chinese version of the Western hamburger and is the favourite of regulars to the restaurant looking for an introduction to cuisine from China’s Shanxi Province. Another crowd-favourite is the hand-pulled wheat noodles, made fresh every morning and personalised according to diners’ selection of the sauce, soup and toppings chosen from the menu. Try the braised pork Bian Biang noodles with chilli oil, topped with tomato and egg for its full sweet and spicy flavour. Portions are large and it’s advisable to share. Claimed to be the only restaurant in Europe to serve beverages from Xi’an City such as the Tsingtao No. 9 beer (named for its strict serving temperature of nine degrees) and a lightly brewed osmanthus-flavoured rice wine, it sees a steady stream of patrons, both Asians and non-Asians, during lunch and after office hours. murgerhan.com

One of Kuala Lumpur’s hotspots, Mr Chew’s Chino Latino Bar in Bukit Bintang just got even better with a new range of cocktails. These four new cocktails use exotic ingredients and flavour combinations that you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else, starting with the Fogueira, a beach holiday-inspired cocktail that mixes gin, dry vermouth and Bitter Bianco infused with pineapple and coconut, served with a garnish of edible sand and burnt cocoa husks. Another refreshing drink is Jungle God, made from gin and a kombucha mix made from fermented jasmine and rose tea – the perfect antidote to waiting out the city’s jams. Looking for a drink with a kick? Take the Inferno, which is made from Japanese whisky, ginger wine, spiced pomegranate juice, red dates and ginseng liqueur that’s set alight before your eyes. Finally, there’s Celestial 5, a surprisingly pleasant savoury-bitter-sweet cocktail that uses duck fat-washed dark rum with Guinness reduction, orange bitters and a splash of hoisin sauce.
Fine dining in Resorts World Genting Malaysia just got elevated as The Olive, the resort’s upscale Continental restaurant at Genting Grand, proudly presents Miyazaki wagyu beef on its menu. Winner of Japan’s prestigious Wagyu Olympics for three consecutive tournaments, Miyazaki wagyu – from the Miyazaki prefecture on Kyushu island – is held in higher esteem than the Kobe variant. Genetically predisposed to contain a higher percentage of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids and intense marbling, the beef yields an unbelievably delicious flavour and melt-in-the-mouth texture. For a complete three-course meal, opt for an appetiser of quinoa and kale salad with pomegranate, feta cheese and maple dressing, before indulging in the star of the show – the A5 Miyazaki beef with roasted root vegetables, apple and cherry tomato. The beef is seasoned with two types of flavoured salt to bring out the best taste. Pair it with a shot of Chivas Regal Mizunara for the ultimate experience, rounded off on a sweet note with a chocolate fondant with dark cherries and smoked cigar ice cream.

The culinary stars continue to shine bright on Anne-Sophie Pic, the only French female chef with three Michelin stars, as she opens her third La Dame de Pic restaurant at the Raffles Hotel, Singapore. Featuring a menu of refined Valence-style cooking, Pic’s restaurants – which are also found in London and Paris – are known for several signature dishes like Berlingots, a pasta dish served with lightly smoked and creamy Banon goat's cheese, ginger and bergamotinfused cress sauce, white mille-feuilles made with light Tahitian vanilla cream, as well as Cornish crab and Brixham Dover sole. The restaurant also features a drinks menu comprising wines, cocktails, whisky, sake, tea, coffee, dashi, broth and consommes.
Newly open in Auckland’s iconic 125 Queen Street is Queen’s Rise, a new laneway-style dining precinct boasting world-class design, an impressive ambience and worldly cuisine. Expect to find 11 of Auckland’s best independent restaurateurs as they present innovative and authentic dining experiences. There’s Lowbrow, an understated yet quirky establishment serving fresh and seasonal food with an edge, and Grace, a culinary twist on elegant yet affordable dining with clean flavours and locally sourced produce. Another major highlight is the Ottoman Mezze Lounge, a Turkish-inspired concept featuring a laidback lounge, traditional Turkish dishes and an emphasis on shared eating. Also in the mix are Italian cuisine specialists Dante’s Pizzeria, Nourish Pod – the original Acai bowl dealers, potato joint and watering hole Potato & Me, as well as fresh and healthy options at Poke Bar. Quintessentially British Tucked away in the leafy Westbourne Terrace of Paddington is the luxuriously appointed Roseate House London. Quintessentially British in hospitality, the intimate auberge features 48 individually designed rooms and suites spread over three delightfully restored 19th-century townhouses. Portuguese artist Paula Rego has been working as a painter, printmaker and illustrator for over 50 years, and her latest exhibition in London focuses on her drawings. Paula Rego: From Mind to Hand, Drawings from 1980 to 2001 presents 60 of Rego’s drawings from the last three decades, most of which depict her oft-visited themes of folklore, fairy tales, the female form and sexuality. As curator and artist Colin Wiggins describes it, Rego's work "is a combination of direct observation in the studio together with her imagination and those childhood memories that have stayed very much alive for her.” For fans of her work, the show demonstrates how Rego’s sketches form the foundation of all her works and are key to understanding the finished pieces.
The Foam photography museum in Amsterdam presents a huge retrospective of late Japanese photographer Masahisa Fukase’s life’s works. One of Japan’s greatest post-war experimental photographers, Fukase began helping out in his family photography studio at the age of six. His very first exhibition, a photojournaliststyle exhibit called Kill the Pigs, was highly acclaimed and brought him into the public eye. Fukase continued to produce thoughtprovoking and challenging works until 1992, when a fall put him in a coma for the next 20 years. Since his death in 2012, the Masahisa Fukase Archives have slowly released his vast back-catalogue, and now at Foam, visitors are able to view a wealth of work that’s never been shown before. Masahisa Fukase: Private Scenes is truly a unique exhibition that’s not to be missed.

Larger Than Life Those visiting the Finnish capital Helsinki must check out the recently completed EUR50 million (USD57 million/RM234 million) project Amos Rex, a new private museum. Architects JKMM have spent the last five years refurbishing and rebuilding the Lasipalatsi building, a former 1930s landmark in central Helsinki. The building is a one-ofa-kind facility, with a 2,200-square-metre gallery space that will be used for housing large-scale works and performances. “The opening of Amos Rex is one of the biggest events to occur in the cultural life of Helsinki for a generation and will offer unrivalled facilities for the display of art, exhibitions, film and performance,” says Kai Kartio, Director of Amos Rex. “Art used to be something you hung on the wall and went respectfully to contemplate. Today, art is increasingly interactive and conversational. It is something people make and experience together.” Currently showing at the museum until January 2019 is Massless, a huge digital exhibition by Tokyo-based art collective teamLab.

In The Ballad of East and West, the British poet and author Rudyard Kipling wrote, “East is East and West is West, and never the twain shall meet.” It may have been true that there were unbreakable cultural differences when he wrote that back in 1889, but since then, The Beatles have swept the world and Chicken Tikka Masala has a good claim to being the most popular dish in Britain. Cultural barriers have broken down, but as a Malaysian who grew up in England, I have discovered that there are still some telling differences between East and West. Of course, Britain is no more representative of the West than Malaysia is of the East, but I’m going to attempt some sweeping cultural generalisations anyway. After all, making sweeping cultural generalisations is a Malaysian tradition that the 19th-century Kipling would have understood. How many times have you said, “Typical Malays, always have to …” And then when you discover that the subject of the story was actually Chinese, “Typical Chinese, always have to …” SHE’S (NOT) LEAVING HOME. In the AngloAmerican world, it is embarrassing, even shameful, for the child (boy or girl) to not leave home when they reach adulthood. It is seen as a lack of maturity. Thousands of Hollywood movies are about young people leaving home to find their own way in the world. In these comingof-age stories, they make rudimentary mistakes, get lousy advice from other young people and just make it up as they go along before finally learning a valuable lesson and reaching true adulthood. They are completely unsupervised and do not take any advice or guidance from their parents. This would not happen in Asia, where children are expected to stay at home, including boys but especially girls. In Asia, an equivalent movie would be a long and quite boring montage scene of young people sitting around at home watching TV or in their rooms on the Internet, while parents are satisfied that their kids are safe and under watchful eyes until it’s time to
East & West get married. And there’s also the understanding that paying rent is a waste of money when they could be living at home. Times have changed and are changing again. The old P. Ramlee movies from the 1960s were filled with young people who move to the big city without their parents. They get jobs, find a place to live, go to nightclubs, do the Twist, chase girls, make mistakes, and all without the guidance of their parents who are presumably back in the village. By the 1970s, Kuala Lumpur had become settled by families and the age of free-wheeling P. Ramlees was over, along with the genre of young people with absolute freedom. And now a similar thing is happening in the West. It is now impossibly expensive for young people to live in central London, where even a car park space was recently bought for £350,000 (RM1.85 million), on the same street where friends of mine once lived for free in an abandoned house in the 1980s. Increasingly in the West, young people have to live at home because they can’t afford to do otherwise, and West has become East.
fundamentally different in the East and West, or at least in Malaysia and Britain, and here I side with the East. When I first came back to Malaysia, I was instantly struck by how old people are given a good measure of respect because of their age. It’s just good manners. Meanwhile, in the AngloAmerican world (though probably not countries like Italy), old people tend to become a forgotten community. It would be sad if East becomes West in attitudes to old people. TRAGICAL HISTORY TOUR. Europeans live in an ancient landscape. Old battles are constantly being discussed and refought, but this is not the case in Malaysia, where today is so much more important than yesterday. Back in the 1990s, I was given a history lesson by a Malaysian who told me how Mahathir had fought and won independence from the Americans. I asked him when this war of independence had happened, and he said, “Those days, last time.” But I was talking to an Englishman once about King Arthur and Merlin and he said, “Sorry, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t know much about history.”
WHEN I’M 64. Attitudes towards old people are

AND IN THE END. In the popular British comedy TV series Goodness Gracious Me, a surly Indian father constantly claims that everything is Indian, including Leonardo da Vinci and the British royal family, “Think about it,” he tells his son, “They all live in the same family house together, Indian. All work in the family business, Indian. All have arranged marriages, Indian!” Perhaps East and West are not so different after all. ■

Mumbai… For The Tourist
goingplacesmagazine.com | 32 | October 2018
For centuries, the Fort area of Mumbai has been the centre of development, art and architecture. The Fort and Colaba areas in Mumbai have examples of Gothic architecture that entwine themselves into the everyday lives of the locals. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is one such building – a railway station that is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list. The keen eye of an observer, comfortable shoes to walk in, and light clothing to combat Mumbai’s humid weather are the must-haves to take on the lanes that house the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco buildings in Mumbai.
Mumbai… For The Shopper Mumbai is India’s fashion capital. Colaba Causeway is a bustling street, lined with stalls that sell everything, ranging from trousers that cost USD5 (RM20.50) to a rare gemstone that can cost USD5,000 (RM20,500)! Another great location to shop is the suburb of Bandra, where stylish clothes and accessories can be bought at reasonable prices. Striking a good bargain is the way to shop in Mumbai, and most street vendors mark up the price and are happy to do a quick round of “negotiations”. Selecting all that you want and then bargaining for a better total price usually yields the best results.
Mumbai… For The Foodie When in Mumbai, sampling the street food that the city is known for is a must. The vada pav is popular, comprising a spicy potato ball, coated in a gram flour batter and fried, served in a piece of soft bread, with sweet and spicy chutneys. Another dish that you must try in Mumbai is pav bhaji, a tangy concoction of vegetables served with buttered bread.

Mumbai… For The Movie Buff Mumbai, also known as the city of dreams, is home to Bollywood, which is the prime movie-making hub of the country. In 2017, there were over 350 Hindi movies released in the country – that’s an average of nearly one movie per day. While you can make your way to a movie hall anywhere around the world to watch a Bollywood release, Mumbai is the best place to watch movies being made. Film City, an integrated film studio complex, has several man-made shooting locations that include mansions, gardens and lakes. The location can be visited in an organised tour, and chances are high you will run into Bollywood celebrities while they are filming.
Mumbai… For The Offbeat Traveller Mumbai never sleeps. It’s a city that is always on the move. If you want to feel the pulse of the city and know what makes the city move and the locals tick,

Seasons hotel, is a must-visit. If dressing up and dancing to some good music is what you’re after, head to Asilo, the highest rooftop bar in Mumbai.
Mumbai… For The Culture Vulture Mumbai is a melting pot of cultures and has developed a culture that is unique to itself. If you wish to get a glimpse of the elements that add colour and vibrance to this city and give many “Mumbaikars” faith, the Siddhivinayak Temple is a mustvisit religious site. Dedicated to the Lord Ganesh, the temple is visited daily by thousands who offer their prayers and traditional sweets to the deity and seek his blessings.
hop on a local train and travel from Churchgate to Bandra. Often, locals spend hours while commuting to work and make friends en route. It is common to see people playing cards, saying their prayers and studying for an exam on the local train. Be warned that local trains are extremely crowded and the best time to travel is possibly midday.
This is the service that delivers fresh home-cooked food to offices or schools. The Dabbawalas do not use technology to execute their services, yet the system is Six Sigma-compliant and has impressed many, including Britain’s Prince Charles and Virgin Group’s Sir Richard Branson.
Another experience worth your time is watching the Dabbawalas.
If you’re not travelling on a budget, the Taj Palace is the place to stay.
Mumbai… For The Luxury Seeker
The hotel first opened its doors in 1903. The Taj Group is known for its hospitality; staying in such an iconic property elevates the experience by a notch. Another property known for its views and service is The Oberoi at Nariman Point. Both the Taj Palace and The Oberoi have restaurants that can please even the pickiest eaters. The Basic TA X I
BEST TIME TO VISIT The best time to visit Mumbai is the winter season in November, December and January, when temperature is moderate, humidity is low and the skies are blue. The temperature seldom falls below 18 degrees Celsius and chances of rain are slim.

MOVING AROUND While locals travel extensively using the suburban trains, all areas of the city are very well connected by road. However, budget extra time if you are travelling by road as the traffic is notoriously bad. Uber works well in the city, as does Ola, a local competitor of Uber. Hailing a yellow and black cab or a rickshaw is also an easy option to move around.
WHERE TO STAY Bandra and Colaba are two of the best areas to stay in Mumbai. Taj, Oberoi and ITC hotels are well-known for their luxurious properties and impeccable service levels. The city also has international hotels such as Hyatt, Novotel and Sofitel. If you are on a tighter budget, The Fern, Ibis and Ginger are good and safe hotels to spend a few nights.
UPCOMING FESTIVAL Mumbai will be alive with festive fervour during the Hindu festival of Navratri on 9-18 October, when devotees fast and worship the nine manifestations of the Goddess Durga. The festival symbolises the triumph of good over evil.

Royals& Celebrıtıes From Penang to London, Han Chong is the Malaysian designer celebrities and royals want to wear.
Han Chong, the Penang-born founder of the fashion label Self-Portrait, has found success in five short years with a client list that includes royals and celebrities such as the Duchess of Cambridge, the Duchess of Sussex, Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez and Priyanka Chopra. The graduate of Central Saint Martins started the London-based label in 2013 offering designer womenswear at affordable prices. Han believes that anyone can be fashionable, not just the privileged few. Self-Portrait is inclusive, and the look is lace, which Han has modernised and incorporated into dresses that make women feel feminine and confident.

Interview Julie Goh | Photography courtesy of Self-Portrait
What made you decide to become a fashion designer? Was there a defining moment?
My tutor introduced me to Fashion while I was studying Art in Penang. I became really curious and interested about the industry, coming from a small town. You grew up in Penang. Did your childhood have any bearing on your interest in fashion?
My aunt was a local artist. She taught me to open my eyes to the world around me, viewing art and design in new ways. The saying ‘the devil is in the details’ is something that really resonates with me. I’m obsessed with analysing and perfecting the tiny details as they are what can make a piece so special. Fashion is something I naturally gravitated towards and I worked in various positions in the industry to gain experience. This knowledge and experience have made me a better fashion designer today. What’s the story behind naming your label Self-Portrait?
It is a play on the modern and traditional. Historically, artists have always painted self-portraits. Today, we have the selfie culture, it’s a reinterpretation of the classic self-portrait. I’ve always been intrigued by the self-portrait as a form of personal expression. Why did you choose London to pursue a career in fashion? Why not Paris or New York, even Japan?
I originally came to London to study at Central Saint Martins. It’s an inspiring city to live in as it is so diverse. There’s always

something happening and exhibitions to see. For me, it was the best place to continue my career in fashion.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 36 | October 2018
Your success has been meteoric since SelfPortrait was founded in 2013, with royalty and A-list celebrities among your fan followings. Did you ever expect it to turn out this way?
No, not at all! I started Self-Portrait to bring something new to the industry by making fashion more accessible. I’m still shocked and excited when I see a new celebrity wearing one of my designs and have to pinch myself to see if it is real. More people are discovering the brand every day, and it’s so interesting to see how they choose to wear it. Why did you choose to focus on lace in your designs? Your dresses are super-feminine and they flatter the female body, but do you agree that not everyone can carry off a lace design? How do you get around this?
What is your philosophy in fashion?
I think fashion is not for the privileged few. It should be inclusive. I’ve worked really hard to prove that a brand in the contemporary price point doesn’t have to sacrifice design and quality. From where do you get your inspiration?
I think inspiration can come from anywhere and anyone. It’s so important to keep an open mind. I like to bounce ideas off people to help me realise an idea. Even the most casual of conversations can inspire you.

There was a fabric market close to where I grew up. I always found the intricacies of lace to be so beautiful. It was a material I wanted to explore in greater detail. I don’t necessarily agree that not everyone can carry off lace. Instead, I believe in refreshing the way women wear it. The modern woman is sophisticated and driven. I try to design pieces she can incorporate into her everyday wardrobe and feel feminine and confident.

You have fans back home. Have you ever thought of opening a standalone store in Malaysia?
We opened our first standalone store in London in March this year. The experience was a learning curve for myself and everyone on my team. There is so much involved! That being said, it’s so great to have a space to interact with our customers. I love popping in to speak with them. Their feedback is so key when I’m designing; it is all for them after all. For now, we are still refining how we work in the store but hopefully we’ll be able to open more in the future.

Malaysia must feel like a long way away. Do you keep abreast of what’s happening back home? How often do you go back to Penang?
I speak with my family often. I try to visit as often as I can, even if it’s only for a few days between business trips. They often send me articles they think I would be interested in or should be aware of.
How do you see women’s fashion changing in the next couple of years?

I think it will be about breaking down the relationship between the customer and the brand. Through social media, you can have a more honest relationship. They give me lots of feedback and that has an impact on how I design. I want my garments to make them feel confident. That being said, you can’t forget to offer them a bit of a surprise each season. Offering them something new keeps people excited. ■

Built in 1951, this four-storey building was originally used to house local police officers and their wives. It’s now home to over 100 small galleries and design stores showcasing local designers selling merchandise (jewellery, clothing, sunglasses, kitchen accessories) vastly different in quality (and price) from the markets.
Aberdeen Street Social is a two-storey colonial house with a terrace within the PMQ building. The restaurant serving modern British cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner is the ideal place to stop for a moment, refuel and contemplate where to go next. For a more traditional food experience, the century-old Lin Heung Tea House on the corner of Wellington Street and Aberdeen Street is one of the city’s most popular dim sum restaurants. Empty seats are rare.
Steep Inclines There are two choices to get up or down MidLevels on foot. One, use the streets with hundreds of stone steps, requiring effort and a certain level of fitness. Far less strenuous is via the Mid-Levels escalators. This series of 20 escalators and three inclined travelators covers over 800 hilly metres, taking over 85,000 pedestrians daily from Conduit Road in Mid-Levels to Queens Road Central.
Peaceful Pursuits A 15-minute stroll from Caine Road on Mid-Levels transports you from the Lan Kwai Fong and Soho drinking establishments into hiking trails in the heart of serene woodlands on the western side

of the Peak mountain. These trails provide the perfect sanctuary to escape the bustle of a heavily populated metropolis. Another serene escape is the Man Mo Temple. One of Hong Kong’s oldest temples, built in 1847 during the Qing dynasty, the temple is dedicated to the God of Literature (Man) and the God of War (Mo). If you’re unsure where to find the temple, follow the sweet smell of incense. Large incense coils suspended from the ceiling of the inner main hall emit ethereal plumes of smoke, burned by worshippers as offerings to their respective gods.
Sham Shui Po - Kowloon
goingplacesmagazine.com | 40 | October 2018
Northwest of the Kowloon peninsula, Sham Shui Po is where you’ll find many authentic experiences. Getting to Sham Shui Po is an easy 20-minute MTR ride from Central station. This predominantly working-class neighbourhood has the second largest number of elderly persons living among the 18 Hong Kong districts, the lowest income per capita and the cheapest prices of goods. Sham Shui Po is where Hong Kong locals come to shop. As the centre for the city’s fabric trade, fashion designers and keen sewers head to Yu Chau Street (Bead street). On this street are countless shops selling materials and clothing components (buttons, zippers, ribbons beads and sequins). From fabric to leather, Alri Star Leather Factory is packed with leather goods as well as the tools to create your own special piece.

Sham Shui Po is also the go-to place for second-hand electronic goods. The Apliu Street flea market is a strip of open-air stalls selling everything from vintage cameras, fishing rods and phone accessories to second-hand power tools. If you’re into recycling and are prepared to rummage through piles of used equipment, this could be your shopping haven.
Snake Soup Walking the streets of Sham Shui Po is where you’ll discover local street food packed with Cantonese flavours and Hong Kong history – including a cafe selling snake soup. In traditional Chinese medicine, snake is used for warming the body, especially in colder weather, promoting blood circulation and easing arthritis. Shia Wong Hip has been serving snake soup since 1965, and its proprietor, Chau Ka-Ling, known as Hong
Kong’s ‘‘snake queen’’, is a second-generation server of the local favourite. For something sweeter, Kung Woo Bean Curd Factory offers fresh tofu and home-made sugarfree soy bean milk drinks. Established in 1893, this is one of the oldest shops in Hong Kong selling traditional soy bean curd. Its deep-fried tofu puffs and fried tofu topped with fish paste are delectable. As with many Hong Kong diners, seating is limited, but the wait is worth it. Sham Shui Po is a district filled with history. In 1955, an archaeological tomb dating back to the

The Lei Cheng Uk Han tomb is classified as a monument but is closed to the public for preservation reasons. The contents of the tomb and its history can be viewed in a museum opened next to the tomb on Tonkin Street, a five-minute walk from the Cheung Sha Wan MTR Station.
Kennedy Town – Hong Kong Island As the westernmost point on Hong Kong island, Kennedy Town quickly moved from a sleepy little outpost to a popular district when its MTR station opened in 2014. Until the metro opening, the only access to Kennedy Town, named after Arthur Kennedy, a governor of Hong Kong in the 1870s, was by bus or tram. The city’s slaughterhouse, the contagious diseases hospital and the public mortuary were located within its perimeter, leaving little enticement to

Sunset Views You can travel on the MTR Blue Line to Kennedy Town, but if time is of no consequence, a half hour on a double-decker tram from Central takes a more scenic route. Kennedy Town is the last stop on the line. As the closest town to Victoria Harbour, the town has a seaside village atmosphere. Praya Street adjacent to Victoria Harbour offers clear views of Kowloon. The Kennedy Town Shipping Dock has become a popular place to view a Hong Kong sunset.

Happy Coexistence Hong Kong is like any modern city, constantly evolving to accommodate growing residential populations and change. Reminders of the past are often removed as developers move into the older neighbourhoods, buying up businesses and buildings, replacing them with new apartments. This process of gentrification is changing the face of traditional Hong Kong, making it harder to experience the way of life that once was. But in these three neighbourhoods, the old and the new prosper harmoniously together, effectively encapsulating Hong Kong’s enduring spirit. ■

Noodles
From The North Naengmyeon, the classic North Korean noodles in cold broth, is awakening a new hunger across Korea, bringing together a divided people.
A man in a blue suit jacket stands on a grand wooden staircase overlooking the crowd. In one hand is a clipboard full of names — our names. In the other, a pink highlighter. On his hip is a walkie-talkie, which every now and then spews crackly messages in Korean. The crowd is dense, and it’s not getting any smaller. We’re all waiting in here, hot and impatient, for this well-dressed man to call us, to choose us from his list. I’m straining to hear him over the restless crowd, because I know what happens when you miss your name. “Going once. Going twice …” There is no third chance. Two calls, and your name is scratched away with pink highlighter.
It’s a cutthroat business. The crowd knows the stakes. Finally, his lips start to move. A woman upstairs calls his walkie-talkie, and his eyes go to the list. He browses for the right name and starts to speak. “Joshua?” he says, struggling with my foreign name. I throw up my hand, and he smiles and waves me toward the back. The crowd watches in envy as I go. A hostess with gentle eyes leads me to a polished wooden table overlooked by classical Chinese paintings. I sit down, relieved. It is finally time to eat naengmyeon. Korea’s answer to Japan’s ramen or Vietnam’s pho, these cold noodles are a subtle art. boiled egg, a couple of julienned cucumbers and a few slices of Korean pear, all soaked in a tangy icy broth and served in a stainless-steel bowl. A dollop of mustard and a splash of vinegar are added at the table, and what you get is the perfect solution to Seoul’s blistering summer heat. This might explain the hour-long lunch lines at Seoul’s best naengmyeon spots, but there’s more to it than that. In recent months, this dish has attracted the attention of the nation – and the hope that maybe a bowl of good noodles can bring a divided country together. When Kim Jong-un came to South Korea in April, becoming the first North Korean leader to do so in nearly 60 years, he brought a few things with him: a chance at peace, an end to months of nerve-wracking tension, and a bowl of cold noodles. goingplacesmagazine.com | 44 | October 2018
The Twitter-verse went wild when Kim brought with him a bowl of Pyongyang Naengmyeon, named after the North Korean capital where the dish originated. The hashtag #pyeongyangnaengmyeon caught fire that day. Restaurants in Seoul selling the dish were lined up down the block. Office workers dedicated their lunch hours to it, coming in droves to celebrate the historic day one slurp at a time. “Now there are way more people coming to our shop,” said Jung-sook Hong, a third-generation naengmyeon shop owner, a smart-looking woman with curly black hair and dark-rimmed glasses. “People thought, ‘What is that? We have to try it, too.’” Fortunately, the dish is not hard to find. Most of Seoul’s best naengmyeon restaurants are scattered along the Cheongyecheon, a historic stream and now a popular tourist site running through the heart of Seoul. It’s like the Fifth Avenue of great noodle shops, and it didn’t happen by chance. “During the Korean War, many North Koreans escaped and came here,” said Hong. “There was a market here, and a stream. The people had nothing to do, so they started making noodles.” Hong’s parents were part of that crowd. They fled the North, bringing their food knowledge with them, and have been keeping it alive ever since, passing down the recipe from generation to generation without ever once writing it down. “It’s all in my head,” Hong says, pointing a finger at her dark curls. From behind her glasses, she’s smiling. “The whole recipe. We never wrote it down. I just learned it from watching my mother.”

4. Many shop owners hand down their recipes through the generations 5. Naengmyeon restaurants are often filled with older patrons, but they are slowly gaining popularity among young men and women 6.~8. The process of creating the noodles
Even as the lines outside her restaurant grow, she’s maintaining the decades-old recipe for these noodles, which have a controversial history of their own. Everyone is aware of Japan’s geisha, the talented women who, from behind white painted faces, hypnotise audiences with their musical and dancing charms. But Korea had its own version of geisha, known as gisaeng. They worked in high-end restaurants around the country called yojeong, entertaining royalty and the country’s uber-rich. This is where naengmyeon first became popular in the 1920s, starting in Pyongyang, the North Korean capital where it’s cold enough to grow the buckwheat and to find ice for the broth – and where the largest schools for gisaeng were located. The gisaeng have all but disappeared, but great restaurants have held on to the same flavour all these decades. “Our mother is still alive,” said Hong. “So we’re trying to keep the flavour just the way she started making it.” Trouble is, this isn’t the same world her parents found when they came to Seoul those 60-plus years ago. Farming has changed – and so has the supply chain. There’s hardly any buckwheat left in South Korea, so now she orders from China. With international shipping and modern

farming, that hometown flavour is harder and harder to maintain. “We grow more crops, we grow bigger crops, so the flavour is slightly different now,” she says, showing me with her hands and a rattling voice just what she means. “A little different.” Tastes in Korea have changed as well. In a generation where salty, spicy, even cheesy foods have taken over the menus, the subtle flavours of naengmyeon are a tough sell. That could be why until recently, naengmyeon never really caught on with the younger crowd. These cold noodle restaurants tended to be full of men with fedoras and women with curly perms. Daniel Gray, who runs Seoul Eats, a food website and tour company in Seoul, says part of it was nostalgia, a “longing for the past” that drew the older crowd. But things have changed recently. Ever since Kim came to the South, offering noodles as a gesture of good faith, naengmyeon restaurants have found a more youthful glow. Girls in office attire take their lunch breaks here.

Young men in suits wait in the heat for a table. They endure the line-ups, maybe even enjoy them. It’s all part of the excitement of eating something coveted, something that is not only delicious but also has a meaning behind it. “It is a hope for unification, and belief that Korea is and will be ‘one country’,” Gray says of the new crowds. Could a bowl of cold noodles really help unite a country? Maybe that’s asking for too much, but it’s not impossible to think they could play a part. Good food is known for bringing even bickering relatives to the same table. And if you can slurp cold noodles together, there’s no telling where things might go. A bit of grilled beef, a shot or two of soju, and we might just find we’ve got more in common than we thought. ■

Cooking from the heart lands Lee Che Liang in London’s fine dining scene. Words Julie Goh | Photography courtesy of Park Chinois
As I was about to tuck into Park Chinois’ famous dim sum, a man in a chef’s uniform rushed to our table, apologising profusely for arriving late for our interview. “I am so sorry. This is unacceptable. Please accept my apologies,” he said. For someone who has been working in the kitchen since he was 10 years old, Lee Che Liang knows a successful restaurant needs to be run with military precision. But the Executive Chef of the fine dining Chinese restaurant and supper club in Mayfair in London can be forgiven for his tardiness. He was kept busy by an officer from the city’s food safety department, who had been in the restaurant since morning conducting their regular checks. The timing of our interview couldn’t have been worse as the lunch crowd was streaming in. When Lee finally sat with me, it was worth the wait. The down-to-earth chef, originally from the southern Malaysian state of Johor, said his on-the-job training in the kitchen at the tender age of 10 came of necessity rather than by choice. His extended family had owned a seafood restaurant in the state of Melaka, where the young Lee helped out, doing everything from washing the dishes to serving food to earn some money. “I did everything there – washing, cleaning, serving, learning how to cook, everything!” he said. Two years later, he left to work in restaurants in Singapore, where his mother is from.
cooking. “The golden age for me was between 17 and 19 years old, when I represented Malaysia in cooking competitions in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan,” he said. In 1996, Lee was crowned champion in a World Chinese Cuisine competition in Taiwan. “I was very proud to win awards for my country. I did it without any formal training. I studied on my own and experimented with the processes until I perfected them,” he added. It was in Singapore that Lee became the master of his profession. As junior sous chef at the RitzCarlton, he learned the importance of having the highest level of quality, service and hospitality to succeed. It was also at the Ritz-Carlton that fate would eventually bring him to London, the city he has called home for more than 20 years. Lee met and befriended Alan Yau, the London restaurateur famed for founding the Wagamama food chain and Hakkasan restaurants at the hotel. Yau persuaded Lee, then 25 years old, to move to London to help him set up the first of his group’s Hakkasan restaurants in 2001. “I had only planned to be there for two years.
Lee, who does not have formal training at a culinary arts school, does not believe in hiring someone based on their academic qualifications. “I’ll give you a scenario between an American company and a Japanese company. An American company will look at your CV and hire you based on your CV. But a Japanese company will put your CV aside, tell you to start work and then evaluate your performance in three months. That’s the Asian style. And this is how I hire my kitchen staff. I give them three months to prove themselves. You can’t tell if a person can do the job from an interview. What if that day wasn’t his good day? Maybe he didn’t get enough sleep because he was nervous about the interview. So he fails the interview, but does that mean he can’t do the job?” asks Lee, who runs a 65-person kitchen at Park Chinois. A real chef cooks from the heart, a trait that is sorely lacking in young chefs today, said Lee. “They can cook but without any soul. There is no heart, no culture. Even for something as simple as fried rice, you have to look at the fundamentals, not just the presentation. You need to understand your ingredients, know where they are from or how they are grown and cultivated.”

From Johor To London
At the end of the term, I handed Alan my resignation letter. I didn’t like London then. At that time, I hadn’t experienced the real London. But Alan refused to accept my resignation, so my wife and I ended up staying another four years. By that time, my wife and I had started to really love the city and the quality of life here. So we bought a property and my son, who was born here, is already 11 years old,” said Lee.
Prior to the opening of Park Chinois, Lee and his team spent three years sourcing for all the ingredients in their menu, taking time to understand the origins of each of the components they required for their dishes. For

While Lee was initially not keen for a life in the kitchen and saw it only as a way of making a living, that changed when he attended a food and hospitality exhibition in Kuala Lumpur when he was 16 years old. That visit would become the turning point for him, igniting his passion for cooking. “I saw so many different and interesting aspects of cooking such as carving, plating and pastry-making, and it really opened my eyes. It was then that I fell in love (with cooking),” he said. At 16, Lee applied to work in the kitchen of a hotel, which became the launchpad for his introduction into the world of competitive

example, for the restaurant’s stand-out dish, the Duck de Chine or Cantonese-style roast duck, Lee spent three days at Silver Hill Farm assessing its processes, from breeding the waterfowl to cooking and packaging. The team still travels the world to sample different produce. They work closely with their suppliers to gain insights into new produce or emerging food trends. For Lee, passion is everything, for which he has paid with his health. He was hospitalised and diagnosed with pulmonary edema in 2015, the year Park Chinois was launched, and is still recovering from it. “It started as a minor flu. I didn’t take care of it and continued to work. The lung became infected and it took me nearly a year to recover. I still need to be careful because it hasn’t completely gone away,” he said, adding that the incident has taught him to appreciate life and the need to have a healthy balanced diet. It’s clear that Lee is a traditionalist at heart. His menus display dishes that combine Eastern traditions and ingredients with fresh European
3
produce to create the flavours of the season. “I usually create my own recipes. I modify traditional dishes by keeping the (Eastern) sauce and seasonings, for instance har cheong, har kow and mui choy, and combining them with European ingredients to make contemporary Chinese cuisine,” said Lee, who scoffs at cooking techniques such as molecular gastronomy. “The only kind of molecular cooking I will allow in my kitchen is in the making of pastries,” he said. Lee cautions that there is a difference between a chef and a cook, saying a chef needs to have a fondness for the arts and music. Someone who appreciates music knows how to sway to the rhythm and that means he enjoys what he does, while someone who appreciates art will have a keen eye for detail. “If you don’t like these two, don’t be a chef, be a cook. A cook needs only to follow the formula, while a chef needs to manage. That’s the difference.” Lee speaks from experience, having been invited to cook for heads of states, including twice for Chinese President Xi Jinping at Downing Street when the latter visited London. Singers Rihanna and Rita Ora as well as Hong Kong artists Jackie Chan and Maggie Cheung are fans of his and regulars at Park Chinois. Now 42, Lee wants to return to Malaysia one day to impart his knowledge to others in the industry but says it would depend on the opportunities available. “I want to share my experience, maybe do a bit of lecturing or write a book. I also want to start a restaurant school, where anyone can come in to learn how to be a chef,” he said. But all that will have to wait. For now, Lee’s priority is to train more chefs for the restaurant market in London, which he says is facing an acute shortage. Perhaps along the way, he will have time to live a little according to his philosophy in life. No doubt he deserves it. ■

I arrive at an apartment building in an unfamiliar suburb of Kuala Lumpur with nothing more than my curiosity and an address for an open house. Climbing the stairs to find the unit number, I notice two things; the mouthwatering smell of home-cooking and the sound of happy chatter, both of which fill the stairwell. The apartment I'm looking for belongs to Rania, a refugee from Syria, and her six-year-old son Taim. Rania and Taim are one of 11 families who work with The Picha Project, a unique social enterprise that empowers refugees to earn much-needed income by hosting dinner parties, catering for events and preparing lunch boxes for corporate clients. Tonight, Rania is feeding a dozen guests in her tiny home, and her table is laden with a feast of Middle Eastern fare, including hummus, moussaka, tabbouleh and falafel. She speaks little English but welcomes us warmly with her smile. We pile our plates high and, at our host's insistence, return for second helpings. The food is delicious.

After dinner, while Rania serves us cups of herbal tea and squares of sugary basbousa, a sweet, homemade coconut cake, we hear her story through an interpreter. Once a teacher, Rania fled her home in Syria with her husband and baby five years ago. Her home city of Raqqa, on the northeast bank of the Euphrates River, 160 kilometres east of Aleppo, now lies in war-torn ruins, and Rania worries daily for her friends and family still living there. The family settled in Kuala Lumpur, where they declared themselves to the United Nations as asylum seekers. They are among 158,620 refugees registered in Malaysia as of June 2018. Last year, Rania's husband passed away, leaving her to raise their son alone. Her status means she cannot gain employment in Kuala Lumpur while

The groundbreaking social enterprise was started in 2016 by Kim Lim, Swee Lin and Suzanne Ling, three students who set out to help refugee families living near their university. “Five years ago, while studying, we started volunteering at a nearby refugee school. Because refugee children are considered illegal immigrants in Malaysia, they're not allowed to attend public schools here, so they are largely taught by volunteers,” says Ling. she awaits resettlement, though there are no guarantees that resettlement will ever happen. Despite the enormous challenges she has faced, Rania concludes her tale by saying that she believes “what's coming will always be better, if you have faith and smile.” While their future is still uncertain, through The Picha Project, Rania, Taim and other families like them have been given a lifeline for the present, a chance to earn a sustainable living, to be part of a community and to have their stories heard.
Ling and her fellow founders not only volunteered their time to teach, they also raised funds for the school to help with materials and running costs. It was during this time that they began to realise the wider issues affecting their students. “After a couple of years of teaching, we noticed that a lot of children would drop out of school at around 13 years old because that's when they would start working illegally in order to help support their families,” she says. “We realised that unless we did something to alleviate the
financial pressures of these families, many of their children would not be able to remain in education or even have a proper childhood.” Being students, Ling and her co-founders were acutely aware of the importance of education and of every child's right to attend school. They resolved to come up with a sustainable solution to the financial shortfall facing so many refugee families. “By this point we had gotten to know some of our students' families and they were always so welcoming and generous with their amazing food,” she recalls. “We realised that this was something unique that they could offer and that we could monetise for them.” “Hospitality is also a way for them to change perceptions of their community,” she continues. “Refugees are often poorly stereotyped because they don't have a way to speak out for themselves, and so people make assumptions about them. By giving them a chance to tell their stories at our open houses, we hope to change some of those assumptions.” Two years on, The Picha Project now works with 11 families from five countries, benefitting 60 refugees in total. Their menu includes Afghan flatbreads and dumplings, Iraqi shawarma, Syrian biryani, Burmese Turmeric Chicken and Palestinian Chicken Mandi. They cater for everything from large corporate events to family weddings, Lunar New Year to birthday parties. Their business model means half of all proceeds, whether it's from catering or open houses, go directly to the family hosting or cooking, while the other half covers The Picha Project’s cost for supervising, quality control and marketing. Their open houses cost RM80 (USD19) per head, while meal boxes and event catering are available from RM20 (USD5) ringgit per head with a minimum spend of RM1,500 (USD362).

Lim, The Picha Project’s Chief Executive Officer, says their ambition is to grow the enterprise to encompass a greater number of those in need. They're also diversifying the business to include selling sauces, condiments and sweets to give families more ways to earn incomes. “We're working to improve the technology side of our business right now to make online ordering easier and to automate some processes to allow us to scale up the work we do,” she says. “Our ambition is to support 1,000 refugees in Kuala Lumpur by the year 2025.” ■ About the writer Sharon Crowther is a Scottish travel writer currently living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Raja Songkok | WARISAN
Raja Songkok Kenali pembuat songkok tersohor dari Pulau Pinang, Haja Mohideen. Teks Alexandra Wong | Terjemahan Yeo Li Shian | Foto SooPhye
A Muslim man's traditional attire is deemed incomplete without the songkok, a tall headdress commonly sighted in the Malay Archipelago after the introduction of Islam during the early 13th century. Typically worn during ceremonial occasions or during prayers at the mosque, the songkok shows no signs of going out of fashion anytime soon. The same, however, cannot be said of the traditional techniques of making songkok. One person who is trying to keep the tradition alive is Haja Mohideen Mohd Sharif. The 70-year-old songkok maker operates from a narrow alcove on the side wall of
the Nagore Shrine at the entrance of Little India, Penang. Barely protected by blinds that have seen better days, the half-squaremetre working space can be cramped and hot on a sunny day, but Haja Mohideen has no intention of moving. The shop is a precious legacy from his late father, OSM Mohd Shariff Mohideen Rawhter, who started the business and worked at the same premises for 40 years until his death in 1973. He would be proud of his son. One of the most celebrated songkok makers in Malaysia, he was recognised with the prestigious Living Heritage Treasures Awards

Typically worn during ceremonial occasions or during prayers at the mosque, the songkok shows no signs of going out of fashion anytime soon.
of Penang in 2017, which ensures an annual cash subsidy of RM2,000 (USD486) every year for the remainder of his life. Haja Mohideen’s love affair with the songkok started at the age of 12, when he would help his father at the shop after school. From sewing the base of the songkok – a simple task reserved for novices – he quickly progressed to making a variety of songkok styles, from songkok lipat, songkok karzi and songkok melayu. Despite having the paper qualifications to secure a more stable job, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps. He was only 24 when he took over the business from his father in 1973. Surrounded by piles of velvet cloth, oblong boxes and paper cartons, Haja Mohideen

explains that the process of making songkok requires both practical skills and artistic flair. The inner frame is created using cardboard or paper from old carton boxes, then cut into an oval shape (tampuk) for the top, and a long rectangular piece of the same material is used to form the rim of the songkok. Finally, the tampuk is joined with the rim; the two must fit like a glove so that the final product looks and feels smooth and seamless. A good songkok should stand steadily on a flat surface before it can fit properly on the wearer’s head. From cutting the velvet cloth to sewing the base, Haja Mohideen does it all – which is no longer common these days, with the dawn of retail giants with the economies of scale to do mass machine production. Despite the long hours and hard work, he tries to charge a reasonable rate for his songkok. Depending on the size and shape, he charges RM20 (USD5) for a child’s songkok, and upwards of RM25 (USD6) for adults. Despite the widespread availability of commercial songkok, long-time customers – more discerning ones, you might say - prefer the work of bespoke songkok-makers like Haja Mohideen, who can incorporate personal touches. For the wearer’s comfort, he may drill small holes at the top of the songkok to let air in or use satin instead of plastic to line the songkok’s rim to minimise sweating.
Sebahagian mereka dah macam keluarga sendiri. Jadi, macam mana nak lepaskan semua ini?” Ujarnya menoktahkan perbualan. ■

Haja Mohideen’s son-in-law Abdul Kader Mydin has been helping him for the last four years. He admits that age and a weak eye have slowed him down. He takes almost two hours to churn out a songkok these days, but he is determined to champion this fading art. His face lights up when a twenty-something customer drops by to buy a songkok. From their banter, it’s obvious the young man is a regular. “His grandfather brought him here as a kid, and I’ve been making his songkok ever since his first songkok for school. I’ve watched multiple generations of my customers grow up. Some of them are like family. How can I give this up?” ■

was shot and injured barely a year after joining the force and just three months into a posting in Grik, at the time a tiny settlement surrounded by deep jungle in northern peninsular Malaysia. Yuen had tracked a group of communist guerrillas for two days, aided by the trail of peas they kept dropping, having harvested a crop planted by others. The trail led to a large guerrilla camp, and while Yuen and his men were planning an ambush, they faced gunfire from higher ground. “PC Lope and I were both struck down by shotgun fire as the heavy thud of heavy tommy gun bullets also hit the ground around us,” Yuen wrote in his autobiography. Yuen was hit in the chest and took a month to recover but was back in the fray by January 1952, this time escaping a burst of gunfire unharmed.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 68 | January 2018
There were other near misses too. A tiger escaped from a trap meant for wild boar and leapt at Yuen and his men but fell just short. On another occasion, friendly fire left him with a flesh wound in his arm. Yuen was able to thwart assassination attempts with the help of colleagues and careful planning.

The Unyielding
Policeman
If communism was the scourge of newly-formed Malaysia, then Tan Sri Yuen Yuet Leng was one of its greatest adversaries, a role that put his life in constant danger. Words Siva Sithraputhran | Photography The Star, Malaysia
A career policeman and a stalwart of the special branch, the intelligence unit of Malaysia's police force, Tan Sri Yuen Yuet Leng's life’s work revolved around tackling the communist threat faced by the country. Yuen joined the police force towards the end of 1950. From the very beginning, he was called upon to deal with what was considered the greatest menace facing the soon-to-be independent nation. It was a threat that persisted well after independence in 1957, ending in a peace accord in 1989, in which Yuen
Oct 2018_Malaysian Icon_ Tan Sri Yuen Yuet Leng02.indd 68
played a crucial role as negotiator. In his autobiography Nation Before Self, Yuen talks about his life carefully and matter-offactly, but the details are as startling as they are courageous. By 1951, Yuen was involved in heavy battles with communist guerrillas and sympathisers, exchanging rapid fire and narrowly escaping injury on more than one occasion.
Injury & The Trail Of Peas The inevitable happened in December 1951. Yuen
Yuen's career was marked by steady progress. He quickly became known for his dependability in the most delicate operations and his ability at intelligence gathering. Starting as a trainee inspector in 1950, he went on to become the Chief Police Officer of Perak state and the Commissioner of Police for Sarawak state, retiring in 1984 after a career than spanned 34 years. “Yuen is an intrepid survivor of Malaysia's life-and-death struggle against the Communist Party of (Malaya),” Tun Mohammed Hanif Omar, former Inspector-General of Malaysian Police, said in a foreword to Yuen's autobiography. He was a soldier's soldier, who was greatly admired by his men and led from the front, added Tun Hanif. Not bad for a man whose initial application to work for the police was delayed because he was colour-blind. Yuen was born into a poor working-class family in 1927. He went to King Edward VII School in Taiping, Perak, but his education was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. At the end of the war, Yuen travelled to China in the hope of finding a naval scholarship. It never materialised. He returned to Malaya, finished school and won a scholarship to the Kuala Lumpur Technical College, the country's highest institution of learning at the time, but was forced to leave for financial reasons. He worked as a clerk and teacher before becoming a policeman. He succumbed to heart disease in October 2015. He was 88. ■

Early the next morning, their experience of a lifetime began with a scenic drive up to Mount Buller Alpine Resort, Resort, passing quaint country towns, vineyards and endless rolling green hills. Just three hours from Melbourne, the magical winter playground set 1,805 metres above sea level offers more than 80 kilometres of ski trails and over 50 hotels, apartments and lodges for the perfect mountain retreat. After checking into the rustic and cosy Pension Grimus, a hotel built in the authentic Tyrolean style of owner Hans Grimus’ Austrian heritage, and a hearty lunch, the members were kitted out with warm clothing for their sled dog experience. The friendly Siberian Huskies have been showing visitors the spectacular scenery of Mount Buller since 2014. The night ended with a delightful dinner at Kaptans, Pension Grimus’ award-winning restaurant serving regional and
Australian cuisine. The next morning, the couples were taken to their chosen activity, where some tried out skiing and snowboarding while those not keen to strap on planks to their feet opted for snowshoeing through the alpine forest. Mount Buller guarantees snow at the start of the season, with an average cumulative snowfall of 2.42 metres, complemented by its snow factory and 254 snow guns. With a great mix of terrain for all abilities, a vibrant village centre with more than 40 cafés and restaurants, including Muslimfriendly, vegetarian and vegan establishments, retail outlets and free shuttle bus to and around the village, the resort has something for everyone. Melbourne is no doubt one of the great street art capitals of the world, where a visit would not be complete without a tour of its iconic laneways to view the artistic creations. The merits of visiting the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Federation Square, National Gallery of Victoria, and the city’s popular arcades and cobbled laneways for shopping and sampling the city’s best food are well-documented.

INSIDE MALAYSIA AIRLINES | #LifeEnriched
Search the hashtag #melbournestreetart on the photo-sharing app Instagram and it will return more than 200,000 posts by users who have visited the city’s street art from all over the world. With more than 15 locations to view these works of art, it’s hard to decide where to start. Thankfully, award-winning Melburnian photographer Jamie Murcia was on hand to give an insider’s tour of where to find the best artwork on the third day. Working up an appetite darting in and out of laneways, the group next visited the 130-yearold South Melbourne Market to sample some of Australia’s freshest seafood. A quintessential village market offering a range of local and artisanal produce, it is a food-lovers’ paradise, where visitors come for the freshly made pastas, meat, fruits, pastries and cakes, or to order a cup of coffee or speciality tea. But food isn’t the only produce you will find there; browse the stalls for an array of merchandise and services, from clothing to pet food. Later that evening, Melbourne’s historic Regent Theatre played host to the members, who arrived at the magnificently restored building in a stretch limousine. Part of the city’s landscape since 1929, the theatre was staging Andrew Lloyd Webber’s London Palladium production of The Wizard of Oz. With Australia’s musical theatre legend Anthony Warlow as The Wizard and Professor Marvel, and leading ladies Lucy Durack as Glinda, Jemma Rix as The Wicked
Witch of the West, and Samantha Dodemaide as Dorothy, the show was a real musical treat. As the journey to see the breath-taking Twelve Apostles in the Port Campbell National Park takes four hours by car along the Great Ocean Road, day four started early after breakfast. The Park is a 1,750-hectare narrow coastal strip that runs from Princetown to Peterborough, and features an amazing collection of natural rock sculptures created by the constant erosion of the mainland’s limestone cliffs for some 10-20 million years. The gigantic pillars, gorges, arches and blowholes attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. To give the members a spectacularly different perspective of the rock formation, they were flown via helicopter over the Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge and London Bridge to as far as Bay of Islands. This was followed by a walk down the 86 steps carved into the face of the cliff known

Continuing the drive north from the Twelve Apostles, the group arrived at Dunkeld, a beautiful village nestled at the foot of Mount Sturgeon at the southernmost end of the Grampians, for the night’s stay at The Royal Mail Hotel. The luxury accommodation offering deluxe suites and cottages is home to Australia’s largest working restaurant kitchen garden. Up to 80 percent of the produce used in the hotel’s dining menus is grown on-site and harvested daily by the kitchen staff. The hotel’s restaurant is said to be the reason Dunkeld rose to prominence for the numerous awards it has won since 2009. Guests can go on daily tours of the garden conducted by the hotel’s chefs to learn how it organically produces heirloom vegetables, herbs, edible flowers, fruit, nuts and more allyear round. Saving the best for last is the visit to a part of the Silo Art Trail in the Wimmera/Mallee region. The 200-kilometre trail is Australia’s biggest outdoor gallery, where renowned street artists Julia Volchkova, Fintan Magee, Guido van Helten, Matt Adnate, Kaff-eine and Rone have transformed wheat silos in six of Victoria’s smallest towns into giant works of art. The trail, conceived in 2016, was inspired by the success of the first silo artwork by van Helten in Brim a year earlier, which caught international media attention and brought visitors to the region. Driving from Dunkeld, the group started the trail from Sheep Hills, where Melbourne-based artist Adnate has painted the faces of two Aboriginal elders and two young children against a backdrop of the night sky to signify the important exchange of wisdom, knowledge and customs from Elders to the next generation.
Oct 2018_LifeEnriched03.indd 77
From Sheep Hills, the group travelled to Rupanyup to see Volchkova’s delicately nuanced monochromatic mural of local sporting heroes, Ebony Baker and Jordan Weidemann. The trail continues north to Brim, Roseberry, Lascelles and finally ends at Patchewollock. Each towering silo, many of which date back to the 1930s, features the town’s people, telling their unique stories, and should not be missed by art enthusiasts for their remarkability. Commenting on the trip, Sue Ann Lim, wife of Enrich member Ronnie Lim, said the experience was one that money could not buy. “I don’t think we would have come up with this bespoke itinerary if we were to come by ourselves,” she said. He husband concurs, saying the itinerary was well planned and executed. “The dinners were fantastic and the sights were first class. Australia is, of course, a very beautiful country but we hope that this campaign will be extended to other countries as well.”

“It has truly been an amazing experience. I come to Melbourne often but this time round, I got to do things that I never thought I would. This is definitely one of those experiences that come only once in a lifetime,” said Deffrick Se To, another member of the loyalty programme. With each experience carefully handpicked and curated to ensure members are rewarded with “money can’t buy” moments, the outcome of the campaign was precisely what the airline and its partners had hoped for. ■

SAFETY + SERVICE INFO
CABIN LUGGAGE HANDLING Passenger and crew safety onboard our flights is our highest priority. In compliance with the airline’s policy and in observing Occupational, Safety and Health Regulations requirements, cabin crew are no longer required to stow passengers’ hand luggages into the overhead stowage compartment. This is to minimise occupational hazard and ergonomic risks faced by cabin crew in the aircraft. Cabin crew on duty will, however, assist passengers travelling with infants, young passengers travelling alone, the elderly, and passengers with reduced mobility. Passengers who are fit and in good health must carry, stow and secure their own hand luggages on board. Hand luggage exceeding the 7kg weight limit is required to be checked in before boarding.
PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PED) For safety reasons and in line with the Department of Civil Aviation guidelines, mobile phones and all PEDs must be switched off once aircraft doors are closed. Whilst cruising, devices placed in flight mode may be used. The devices must again be switched off during the approach for landing until the aircraft is parked at the terminal building. Devices transmitting strong signals must remain switched off throughout the flight, until disembarkation. The Captain may prohibit the use of devices that can interfere with the aircraft’s system.
LITHIUM BATTERIES Lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries for portable electronic devices (PEDs), including medical devices must not exceed 2g for lithium metal batteries and 100Wh for lithium ion batteries. All spare batteries, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for PEDs must be carried in passengers’ carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. For PEDs containing non-spillable batteries, they must be 12V or less or 100Wh or less. A maximum of two spare batteries may be carried. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.
ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES Electronic cigarettes must be carried on one’s person or in carry-on baggage only. Recharging of the device in-flight is not permitted.
ZERO TOLERANCE OF ABUSE We value courteousness. Any form of threat, verbal abuse or violence towards our staff will be taken seriously. We are committed to supporting anyone who has been the victim of an assault.

MIDNIGHT FUSIC’s first EP, When Love Was Around, is playing onboard this month. Going Places catches up with the four-piece Indie/ Alternative band from Malaysia to see what’s in store for them.
Tell us briefly how Midnight Fusic came about.
Midnight Fusic was formed back in 2013 by vocalist Arif Kamarudin and lead guitarist Adrian Danial. They started off by making covers on YouTube and Soundcloud as a duo. But at the same time, both of them always had a vision of forming a band of their own. Then in 2016, bassist Firdaus Azmi, alongside drummer Muaz Rabbani, joined the band and completed the line-up as a four-piece band. What is behind the name, Midnight Fusic?
'Midnight' came from the band's habit of always staying up late till midnight. The word 'Fusic' originally came from the combination of 'food' and 'music' but along the way, we decided to change it to a more professional
term, which is the combination of 'fusion' and 'music'. Being fresh out of school, has music always been what the band members wanted to get into? Do you see yourselves making music a life-long career?
We have always been into music since we were young. We all grew up listening to the same artists such as Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake and others who inspired us to start playing and making music. We look up to them and idolise them. They are behind our love for music and we hope to continue making music to turn it into a career. Who writes the music in the band? What influences it?
We write and compose all of our songs as a band. Most of our songs are written based on past experiences and are influenced by bands such as The 1975, Bad Suns and The Smiths. Where does the band see itself in five years?
We hope to release our sophomore album within the next five years. We are also hoping to perform all around the world at prominent venues and festivals such as the Glastonbury Festival and Coachella.

THE INTERNET Hive Mind
This is the fourth studio album by the American R&B band. Unlike its previous albums, it is no longer just a hip-hop spin-off nor does it try too hard to be the Miguels and Weeknds of the world. The band simplifies its sound with soft-focused blues, plush arrangements and deep grooves. It is preceded by the singles Roll (Burbank Funk), Come Over and La Di Da.

Launched by Malaysia Airports, DR Group and The Hershey Company, the Kuala Lumpur International Airport is now the proud home of Hershey’s flotilla buggy – the world’s first truly mobile promotion by a confectionery brand. Themed ‘Sunny Californiadreaming’, the convertible Cadillac has been turned into a bright and colourful attraction featuring iconic Malaysian landmarks, whilst also providing passengers with a convenient last-minute shopping experience.
Japan Fever The three-day Japan Expo Malaysia 2018 saw thousands flocking to Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s premier shopping destination, for an immersive three-day showcase of culture, music, fashion and food from the Land of the Rising Sun. Aside from fun activities such as cooking demonstrations and traditional shows, there was also an energetic performance by Japanese comedian and viral sensation, Pikotaro.
