South Korea’s Unique Attractions

Cultural aspects that South Korea is best known for include K-Pop, Korean dramas, traditional Korean architecture, and popular Korean cuisine such as Korean barbecue and bibimbap. But the country also has a wide range of tourist attractions to explore, including unique hidden gems like an abandoned theme park, a glass castle and a place dedicated to cheese.

Bird-Watching Epic Waterparks Whether you like adrenalinepumping rides, hurtling your way down a slide, or whiling the afternoon away as you float down a lazy river, a trip to any of the five epic waterparks in Asia on our list is just what you’ll need to beat the heat.
Boasting a diverse tropical landscape that includes mangroves, lush lowlands, mountain rainforests, islands and beaches, Malaysia is paradise for birds. Home to close to 800 species of birds, it’s no surprise that the country is one of the most popular bird-watching destinations in Southeast Asia.

FROM THE COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF
Since the launch of our Malaysian Hospitality campaign last year, where we established Malaysia Airlines as the first taste of Malaysian hospitality for visitors to our beautiful country, we have made significant improvements across our products and services. These include the offering of the best Malaysian cuisine, a revamped Golden Lounge with a contemporary and luxurious Malaysian look and feel, and an improved website and a mobile app with enhanced speeds and a more intuitive web booking experience. This year, we reinforced the Malaysian Hospitality promise by introducing more direct benefits to the entire travelling ecosystem, including the introduction of a new app, MHassistant, and a brand-new ticketing office in NU Sentral Kuala Lumpur. We also launched MHholidays, the latest travel marketplace that allows travellers to customise their holidays with the combination of flights and hotels. goingplacesmagazine.com | 8 | October 2019
Our focus on improving customer experience and enhancing product offerings has also translated into an overall year-todate increase in the Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) from 74 percent in 2018 to 76 percent, and a Net Promoter Score of 13, an increase of nine points from the previous year.
Capt Izham Ismail
Group Chief Executive Officer Malaysia Airlines Berhad
We are cognisant that there are still many areas that need improving, and you have our word that we will double our efforts to enhance customer experience and elevate the Malaysia Airlines brand globally. We welcome any ideas or feedback that you may have on our offerings onboard or on the ground.
Dear Guests, It is my pleasure to welcome you onboard. I am very pleased to share that Malaysia Airlines won the Platinum Award in the Transportation, Travel and Tourism category at the recent Putra Brand Awards 2019. Also known as the People’s Choice Awards, the selection is done by measuring consumers’ preferences, centred on their familiarity, favourability and trust in a brand and how likely they are to recommend the brand to their family and friends. Winning the top prize is truly uplifting and an endorsement of our hard work in delivering our brand promise of Malaysian Hospitality.

While you are in Malaysia this month, do try to catch the Diwali festivities, which are grandly celebrated around the country. Also known as the Festival of Lights, the spirit of Deepavali, as it is more commonly known in Malaysia, will come alive on Malaysia Airlines flights. We will be offering coconut candies onboard, which is a traditional Indian treat, to share the festive joy with our guests. This will be available on 27 October on flights from Kuala Lumpur to Delhi, Mumbai, Kochi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Colombo and Kathmandu. I wish you a great journey with Malaysia Airlines always and a wonderful visit to or stopover in Malaysia. ■

elaborate gardens of the imperial family to more intimate ones fashioned by scholars and merchants. Shanghai’s Yuyuan Garden is said to be the best example of an ancient garden, but you can also visit those in Beijing, Chengde, and Suzhou. Nine out of 69 gardens in Suzhou have been given special status by UNESCO on its World Heritage List. A visit to one of these gardens would be perfect to cap off your year.

Julie Goh Editor
Welcome to another issue of Going Places. As we enter the final quarter of 2019, I am struck by the realisation that we’re also approaching the end of a decade. That’s a significant milestone. I don’t think about where I’d like to be 10 years on, but maybe some of you do. I hope you are where you want to be.
Hong Kong’s tourist arrivals in August reportedly dropped by nearly 40 percent from a year ago as the result of antigovernment protests. I lived in the city for three years in the early 2000s, long enough to make quite an impact on me. Hong Kong has a great personality. The city is safe and has a great transportation system, good food, great nightlife and excellent shopping, and the beach and national parks are all easily accessible. Go beneath its glamorous surface and you’ll find that pockets of heritage still exist. Old-fashioned wet markets, little bakeries and tiny bookshops that serve really good coffee or temples and shrines hidden in back lanes amid towering skyscrapers are just some of what makes Hong Kong at once contemporary and traditional. I am saddened by what has been happening in Hong Kong in the last four months. I hope the city will bounce back soon. Over in New Delhi, India’s capital, our writer Vanessa Gibbs has distilled the city into essential experiences and places you need to visit. Take our guide on pages 28-30 with you to avoid having your visit scuppered by Delhi’s legendary traffic and dense crowds, especially if you have a short layover. From our bite-sized segments to these travel features, we hope you find some interesting reading. Safe travels wherever you are heading to and Happy Diwali to all who are celebrating this joyous occasion. ■
If you have not planned for the year-end holidays, one of our travel features this month – China’s ancient gardens, Hong Kong’s creative neighbourhoods for art and dining, and where to go for New Delhi’s history and culture – might inspire your wanderlust. Our cover story showcases one of China’s cultural treasures. Classical gardens in China have flourished since the Tang Dynasty in 618-907 AD and provided countless hours of tranquility for those seeking to get away from the chaos of the city. They come in various sizes and styles, from

Keep it up, well done! Malaysia Airlines is always my choice when on a business trip. I'm writing while onboard MH601 heading to Singapore, seated in my favourite seat by the window. In this digital age, you hardly read the hardcopy of a magazine. Everything is e-magazine, e-newspaper, etc. which are all electronically digitised on your small smartphone or tablet screen. It's not the case every time I fly with Malaysia Airlines, where the first thing I do as soon as I get to my seat is to pull out Going Places. It’s a must! Flipping every page never felt so satisfying and I’m always overwhelmed by the informative content. There was even a time when I planned my vacation based on an article in the magazine. Looking forward to reading every print if only I had a business trip each month! WAN FAHMY REDZUAN Cyberjaya, Selangor, Malaysia
AHMAD SAIFUL RAHMAN BIN AB RAHIM Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia
I am travelling to Shanghai Pudong on MH388 with mixed feelings as I have just ended my holiday with my family, a road trip in Semenanjung Malaysia, and am now heading back to work in Suzhou. We have enjoyed visiting relatives, friends and places and trying local delicacies. This is a memorable and fruitful trip for my parents, sister and 1.5-year-old daughter. We are certainly looking forward to our next family bonding trip! On this return trip, sitting next to me is a Chinese traveller who recently visited Sabah. We started the conversation by helping her to select the in-flight food – omelettes or nasi lemak. She decided on nasi lemak and commented that she was very impressed with Malaysians’ hospitality, charm and helpfulness on her first trip to Malaysia. I am proud to be a Malaysian when receiving these sincere compliments. CHONG LAI PENG Suzhou, China
Each month, Going Places will select a Letter of the Month and the winner will receive a gift. For October, the winner will receive a 2D1N stay in the Grand Room at Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur Hotel, inclusive of daily breakfast at THIRTY8 for two worth USD335 (RM1,400).
Going Places welcomes your comment. Letters may be edited for clarity and brevity and are published in the language in which they are written. Please include your full name, contact number and location when writing to us at mhmedia@spafax.com.

Floating Lanterns
Arts Exchange
The southern riverside city of Jinju plays host to the iconic Jinju Namgang Yudeung Lantern Festival every year. What originated as a lantern lighting custom used as military signals to prevent Japanese troops from wading across the Namgang River during a bloody invasion in the late 16th century has transformed into a colourful lantern festival that honours the sacrifices of the defenders. Many visitors write wishes on small lanterns to either be sent floating down the river or hung up on display. In addition to marvelling at the tens of thousands of creative giant lanterns along the river and riverbank, visitors can look forward to brilliant firework displays, cultural performances and a wide variety of international street food stalls.
There is plenty in store for visitors at the 13th annual OzAsia Festival, Australia’s leading contemporary arts festival engaging with Asia. The 18-day festival will be packed with up to 60 events, from performances to screenings, exhibitions and free events such as the popular Lucky Dumpling Market, Moon Lantern Parade and JLF Adelaide, a satellite event of the Jaipur Literature Festival. Artists from over 20 countries will present an engaging line-up of works, from music to theatre, dance, film, literature and visual art. Events to look forward to include performances by Malaysian pop star Dato’ Sri Siti Nurhaliza and British musician Nitin Sawhney as well as legendary playwright Stan Lai’s The Village and the award-winning Akram Khan Company’s contemporary dance Outwitting The Devil.
When: 1 – 13 October Where: Areas around Jinju Namgang River and Jinjuseong Fortress, Jinju, Gyongsamnam-do, South Korea
When: 17 October – 3 November Where: Adelaide Festival Centre and participating venues around Adelaide, Australia

Extraordinary Survival After critically acclaimed runs in theatres across the U.K. and internationally, Tom Morris’ theatre version of Touching The Void opens in West End this month at The Duke of York’s Theatre. Based on the 1988 award-winning memoir of the same name by Joe Simpson with stage adaptation by David Greig, Touching The Void is an extraordinary tale of survival. In 1985, mountain climbers Joe Simpson and Simon Yates became the first climbers to reach the summit of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes by climbing the west face. Tragedy struck during their descent of the north face when Simpson slipped and broke his leg; as conditions deteriorated, the climbers faced difficult decisions.
Run To The Rhythm Now in its sixth year, The Music Run returns with a new presenting partner, the CIMB Group. Choose between the 5km and 10km categories and move to the beat of more than 100 speakers blasting lively music throughout the entire Sound Track circuit. Cross the finish line with friends and family and join the world’s best finish line party, as talented local bands and top DJs get the crowds jumping in the Live The Beat show. This year, The Music Run will champion sustainability and eco-awareness by pledging to run a carbonneutral mass-participation event through recycling, proper waste management and reducing single-use plastic.
When: 9 November – 29 February 2020 Where: The Duke of York’s Theatre, London, U.K.

Basque Brilliance The refurbished and relaunched Alkaff Mansion in Telok Blangah Hill Park in Singapore is more than a pretty sight. Within this two-storey Tudor-style building is a multi-concept F&B destination that prides itself on all things Basque, including the region’s glorious food. The recently opened Txa Pintxo Bar is where you can taste what Basque chefs Marta Elvira Segalés and Silvana Pascual Romero have put together, with produce sourced from the Basque regions and exclusive to Txa. Among the menu highlights are a selection of pintxos al momento – pintxos prepared on the spot – such as Txangurro a la Donostiarra (gratinated crab meat cooked in sofrito, grilled with breadcrumbs and butter) and Piquillos Rellenos De Brandada De Bacalao (piquillo pepper with stuffed Atlantic cod fish). At the bar, you’ll find pintxos plates ready to go, including Boquerones Con Piperrada (toasted bread topped with red pepper cream and European anchovy) and Crema de Roquefort con Manzana y Nueces, where toast is served with a generous spread of Roquefort cream, apple jam and walnuts. Don’t forget to end your meal with the classic Basque burnt cheesecake. There are about 27 types of dishes here, so there are plenty of reasons to return. txapintxobar.sg

A Thai Odyssey Bringing an authentic taste of Thailand’s varied regional cuisine to Kuala Lumpur is Krung Thep. Located in the hip new dining destination Republik in Damansara Heights, the restaurant is led by head chef Piyanat “Gug” Yowabut, who hails from the Isan city of Khon Kaen and previously worked in Singapore’s renowned Long Chim restaurant. The menu covers four main regions of Thai cuisine: Northern, Central, Isan (Northeastern) and Southern, but you can save yourself the dilemma of navigating through a menu of unfamiliar dishes by ordering the family-style set menus. There’s Menu Neung, which comprises six dishes, including gai yang kao suan kwang (grilled kampung chicken with white peppercorn, lemongrass and chillitamarind), sai auo gek (smoked lamb sausages with Northern Thai spices), and hoi maleng pu orb (baked mussels in coconut milk broth, lemongrass and Nam Chim seafood sauce). Those wanting more can opt for the eight-course Menu Song, which includes tom yam pla insee (hot and sour Kingfish soup), yam makreua yao (northern-style smoked Thai aubergine with fish sauce dressing, lime, prawn floss and onsen egg) and geng gwia warn neu (green beef curry with sweet basil, peas and eggplant).
Foodies heading to London in October won’t be short of a fantastic meal during the annual London Restaurant Festival. Held 1-31 October in venues across the city, the 10-year-old festival features over 70 events and 250 restaurants. Ticketed highlights include a sushi and sake masterclass by Miyako restaurant; restaurant-hopping tours that take you across the city’s most exciting up-and-coming restaurants in Battersea Power Station and St Katharine Docks; tasting menus with featured chefs; and a mini film festival at the Temple Cinema, a 19th-century Masonic Temple hidden in the Andaz London Liverpool Street Hotel. If you can splash the cash, there’s also the Ultimate Gastronomic Weekend, priced at about RM1,950 (GBP380), which includes a stay at a five-star hotel and a weekend of dining and exploring with chefs Michel Roux Jr or Monica Galetti.

Danger Danger British artist Rachel Howard’s first solo exhibition L’appel du vide in New York comprises works on paper, paintings and sculpture, exploring the whispering, dark voice that compels individuals to leap off the edge of a high building or swerve into oncoming traffic. Translated to ‘the call of the void’, the exhibition explores the ‘what if’ voice of self-destruction. Experimenting with the characteristics of paper, paint and canvas, Howard uses various techniques to create texture and push the boundaries of her chosen materials. The exhibition opens with five large-scale crimson red paintings, which have an immediate arresting effect on the viewer and evoke emotions of curiosity and an awareness of danger. A Friend In Common
Frieze London is one of the British capital’s most inspiring contemporary art fairs, with its main site in Regent’s Park. The show features over 160 galleries, introducing the public to a host of the art scene’s undiscovered gems, emerging talents and current masterminds. Aside from the fair’s Regent’s Park HQ, visitors must not miss the incredible Frieze Sculpture show in the English Gardens at the far corner of the park. The schedule for Frieze London 2019 is extensive and includes Frieze Talks, Frieze Music and Frieze Masters, presenting antique artworks.
Not many people know that artists Van Gogh, Monet, Munch and Dalí had something in common. They were all greatly inspired by the works of 19th-century French artist Jean-François Millet. JeanFrançois Millet: Sowing the Seeds of Modern Art explores the influence that Millet had on his peers, subsequent admirers and the modern art movement in general. Though he received classical painting training in Paris, Millet’s own style was incredibly progressive for its time and included harsh brush strokes, hard lines and intriguing compositions. Millet’s themes were also revolutionary as he focused on the poor and the experience of ordinary peasant life, rather than the lavish obsessions of the aristocracy. The show presents a number of Millet’s works alongside pieces from famous artists who were clearly inspired by Millet’s originals, proving how the artist was an early champion of the modern art movement.

A Life Less Ordinary At the prestigious tapestry workshop Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh, Turner Prize winner Grayson Perry presents Julie Cope’s Grand Tour: The Story of a Life, an incredible series of tapestry works created around a fictional character called Julie Cope. The work itself was originally made for A House for Essex, a collaborative effort between Perry with FAT Architecture for Living Architecture, which saw the partners build a house inspired by the history of the local land on which it stands. The subject of Perry’s tapestries, Julie Cope, is an every-woman, and the ornate, immense tapestry evokes themes of wealth and status that conflict with the ordinary nature of Cope’s existence. This is a rare opportunity to see one of Perry’s large-scale tapestry series inside one of Scotland’s leading tapestry studios.
Human Division The Gropius Bau exhibition venue in Berlin has gathered some 28 internationally acclaimed artists, all working in a variety of mediums, to contribute to a remarkable group show, Walking Through Walls. The exhibition marks the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and sees the 28 artists explore the detrimental effects of humanmade barriers and divisions. The show falls into three sections of investigation; firstly, the experience of physical walls; secondly, the psychological effects of walls, both real and metaphorical; and lastly, the struggle to overcome these divisions. Through the symbol of the Berlin Wall, the show also provides a commentary on existing political issues and current social divisions.

Museums & Art Galleries Honour Mahatma Gandhi with a visit to the National Gandhi Museum, which houses exhibitions, relics and artwork related to the life and work of the activist icon. To learn more, head south to the Gandhi Smriti Museum, the house where he spent his final months and the location of his assassination in 1948. Take in the imposing India Gate, built to honour Indian soldiers lost in World War I, then head to the National Museum, which is home to around 200,000 exhibits, including artworks and relics of Indian and international history dating back to 2,500 BC. For something newer, take a short walk to the National Gallery of Modern Art, home to thousands of artworks from the 1850s to the present day. For an ultra-modern art experience, head to the Lodhi Colony neighbourhood to see

the bright and bold murals of the Lodhi Art District. Local and international artists have contributed over 50 works of street art to what is the country’s first open-air public art district.
Temples & Tombs For a pocket of peace in the city, head to the Lotus Temple. Built for the Baha’í religion but open to all, this lotus-shaped temple features 27 marble-clad petals and a glass roof surrounded by nine tranquil ponds and landscaped gardens. Said to have inspired the Taj Mahal, Humayun’s Tomb was constructed in 1572, 60 years prior. The symmetrical sandstone structure houses the tomb of Mughal Emperor Humayun. Several other tombs can be found in the surrounding 27-hectare garden, including that of the emperor’s trusted barber. Cross the river to the Akshardham Temple, the largest Hindu temple in the world. Built in 2005, the modern complex of structures features film screenings, exhibitions, boat rides and a music and fountain show set in the stepwell-themed courtyard at sunset.
Market Madness In Old Delhi, the Chandni Chowk shopping district is a maze of market streets selling everything from spices to snacks and crafts to clothing. The hundreds of stalls are roughly grouped by what they sell, such as jewellery, perfumes, books and even antiques. Duck
into tiny side streets and explore the endless stalls with their goods piled from floor to ceiling. The markets are open every day except Sunday and haggling is expected. To the west of the Chandni Chowk district is the Khari Boali market, the largest wholesale spice market in Asia.

Tempt The Taste Buds Hidden in the labyrinth of markets in Chandni Chowk is an unassuming side street called Paranthe Wali Gali. Here, you’ll find stalls selling paratha, stuffed flatbreads filled with a variety of ingredients like peas, potatoes, paneer and cauliflower. Dip into chutneys or top with pickles as a snack or pair with curries as part of a larger meal. Thali refers to a platter of dishes served on a tray and usually includes an assortment of curries, chutneys, breads, rice and
vegetables. There’s often a sweet dish too, so there’s no need to wait for dessert. Restaurants across the city serve up the sizzling and fragrant meal and it’s a great way to try a variety of dishes. For dessert, try jalebi, deep-fried batter coated in syrup, from Old Famous Jalebiwala, which has been making the sugary snacks since 1884. Don’t forget to wash it all down with a spicy masala chai tea.

Useful Tips: SCAM ALERT ! GETTING AROUND Taxis and auto rickshaws are plentiful. Agree on a price beforehand and haggle but expect to be charged more as a tourist. If you’re doing a day of sightseeing, it’s cheap and convenient to rent a driver for the day. Before you go, negotiate a rate upfront and agree on where you’ll go and how long the driver will wait at each stop. The metro is crowded during rush hour but makes a great choice at other times of the day.

SCAMS Delhi has a reputation for scams, but while there are a few opportunists, the city is largely safe. Ignore, or at least check for yourself, ‘helpful warnings’, such as someone dressed as a train inspector saying you have the wrong ticket and need to buy a new one or a driver saying the hotel you’re asking to go to is fully booked.
STREET FOOD Don’t be afraid to try the street food. Some of the city’s best food is served from small sizzling stalls. Use your judgment and check cleanliness before ordering. If in doubt, go where the locals go and opt for vendors with the longest, fast-moving queues; this means the food is both good and fresh.
name suggests, you’ll find deer roaming through a vast expanse of forested green space. Young couples get cosy on benches, families picnic by the lake, and locals enjoy slow jogs through the scenery. Nearby Lodhi Gardens is a 36-hectare park perfect for finding peace in the chaotic capital. Relax and take in Mughalera architecture with the 15thcentury tombs of Bada Gumbad, Sheesh Gumbad and Muhammad Shah and the 16th-century Sikander Lodi tomb. Head to south Delhi and take a meditative walk through The Garden of Five Senses, a landscaped park with floral displays, water fountains and 25 sculptures. Divided into multiple zones with different art and plants in each, the park was designed to stimulate each of the five senses. ■

Azida Mohamed Burhan, Head of Marketing at TM ONE, discusses ways Telekom Malaysia (TM) is adopting advancements in technology to ensure the company remains competitive. Interview Rubini Kamal | Photography courtesy of TM ONE
goingplacesmagazine.com | 32 | October 2019
Tell us about yourself and what led you to study engineering?
I am not an engineer by profession, but the curiosity of knowing how an engineer thinks and why they behave as such made me take up the challenge to study Masters in Engineering Business Management at Warwick University, UK. That feeling came about when I was surrounded by engineers and found there was a missing link that is the ‘art’. Having been in international five-star hotel chains for 10 years in Sales & Marketing prior to joining Telekom Malaysia, providing great customer service means building a reputation for excellence in keeping up with customer expectations. In business, there must be a balance of art and science; only then, to me it is considered as a complete connected ecosystem.
Your roles have generally been technical, but now you’re the head of marketing of TM ONE. Why the shift and what has the transition been like?
I like doing things differently and exploring new ventures. It was self-fulfilment when I started my career in TM Net to be with the pioneer team to roll out the Internet in Malaysia i.e. Streamyx. We evolved as the demand kept increasing for higher speed connectivity; another milestone was achieved when we launched unifi followed by fixed-mobile convergence services to the
1 2
How did you end up in TM One and what has your journey been like in this industry?
It was two different worlds, moving from a customer-centric hospitality industry to a product-centric telecommunications company back then. At that time, the Internet was still in its infancy in Malaysia, but I saw that it could grow bigger than ever through the benefits of connectivity and in changing lives. So, I jumped on the bandwagon to join TM Net, the Internet Service Provider, and there has been no turning back since then. It was a little funny that over a lunch meeting in Bangsar, the Chief Executive Officer (of) TM Net asked if I would like to be part of their ‘future’ projects. Little did I know that I would be involved in multiple business and technology transformations within TM and it has kept me current and relevant until today. The digital transformation and advanced technologies such as IoT, AI, big data and smart industry solutions have kept me abreast to face the digital era.

We recently launched a series of 10 transformative solutions (10T) that were developed together with our customers using the design thinking methodology, which resulted in a deep understanding of their needs to address their pain points, enabling them to optimise their efficiency towards maximising profits.
What is the biggest challenge that TM ONE faces and how do you plan to overcome it?
We have talents and will continuously upskill them to improve productivity and efficiency. The biggest challenges will always be people and the speed to expand their knowledge and capabilities. My best bid is empowering my team and leaders to just do it and we will learn along the way. Today, I am in TM ONE, heading the Marketing division, and we are transforming into the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Businesses transform through intelligence. People and technologies are transforming the way we live our lives, from home to outside, with virtual reality experience as a pilot, constantly innovating for more opportunities. With the 10T under our belt, we will be continuing our journey to an expanded TM ONE portfolio of smart solutions that will create greater value for our Enterprise and Public Sector business customers across all key verticals to transition into IR4.0 (Industrial Revolution 4.0).
What differentiates us from other smart services providers in the market is our complete end-to-end infrastructure in our Hyperconnected Ecosystem. The complete elements in the ecosystem enable our customers to collect, store, process and analyse data, powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) to produce valuable insights, so they can address their pain points and subsequently deliver the best experience for their customers. Security is a huge concern in the digital world. How does TM ONE ensure that customers’ data are safe and protected?
More and more companies are prioritising and relying on IT to give valuable insights for better decision-making for growth, innovation and increasing efficiencies. Very soon, there will be millions of IoT sensors collecting huge amounts of data, which needs to be stored, validated and processed into useable information. TM ONE has always placed priority on data security. From secure and dedicated network connections such as IPVPN to a dedicated Security Operations Centre (SOC) to monitor and mitigate cybersecurity risk and attacks, we are constantly evolving and innovating our solutions across multiple verticals. There is a huge buzz about 5G now. When does TM ONE foresee rolling out 5G technology that will benefit its customers?
Although it is still very new in Malaysia, we foresee that 5G will drive the next wave of revolution in the technology space. It has the potential of enabling many more applications and uses. TM, as an integrated telco and the enabler of Malaysia’s digital economy aspiration, is well-positioned to be in the lead in this space. We have the proven track record in nation-building as well as the right expertise and experience needed to support the government’s aspiration to build Malaysia’s Hyperconnected Ecosystem to stimulate the growth of the digital economy. Globally, where is the industry headed and do you see Malaysia in that space?

Destination TRX: A modern financial hub set in a lush park environment The Tun Razak Exchange (TRX), Malaysia’s upcoming international financial district, will be more than just a hub for global finance and commerce. The new, pulsing spirit of Kuala Lumpur (KL) will be as much about the people and the lifestyle as it is about a space to work in. Cosmopolitan and people-centric, TRX is designed to achieve that delicate balance

active lifestyle – a move away from the choc-a-block vehicular congestion of an Asian capital.
An important part of the lifestyle identity at TRX is its green lung. Approximately 23 percent of TRX comprises landscaped green spaces – crucial in delivering its ethos of prioritising pedestrians, promoting social exchanges as well as an
Pedestrian mobility is not restricted to just the district itself, but also extends out to neighbouring streets and businesses, and a boulevard that links TRX directly to KL’s famed shopping belt. If you traverse the 70-acre (28-hectare) financial hub on foot, you will find yourself enjoying a network of shaded pedestrian walkways and plazas that criss-cross the district, connecting all buildings and major landmarks seamlessly, from the on-site

MRT station, through its central park, and all the way to the bustling Bukit Bintang shopping area. TRX meticulously integrates its green spaces with everyday requirements, crafting shade and natural cooling methods suitable for the hot and humid tropics, creating a true connection between city people and nature. At the heart of the district is The Exchange TRX: the 17-acre (seven hectare) lifestyle centerpiece ringed by magnificent corporate and residential towers. This lifestyle component is integral to the TRX Experience, where transactions for international commerce and finance take place in a district that is also liveable, fun and exciting. The vibrant retail centre will serve as a trendy social hub and a premium lifestyle destination for KL’s central business district, from fine gastronomy in elegant restaurants to coffee and tea in al fresco spaces, to internationally renowned retail outlets and niche specialty shops and boutiques by local entrepreneurs.

Offering world-class retail, dining, entertainment and nightlife in about two million square feet of gross floor area and topped by a one-of-a-kind 10 acre (four hectare) public park, The Exchange mall will be buzzing with life beyond office hours. The 10-acre rooftop city park is TRX’s jewel in the crown; a multi-level, multiexperiential public park that is key in turning the district into KL’s next major destination. The grand stage on the podium area and the wide spaces surrounding it makes it an ideal venue for lively concerts and festivals. While pop-up cinemas will give movie-lovers something to look forward to, fitness enthusiasts can work up a sweat on the park’s track and training ground and families with young children can enjoy themed playgrounds. Being well-connected to the rest of the city via the MRT rail network and major highways and roads such as Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Sultan Ismail, SMART and MEX, TRX is as accessible as it is welcoming. ■

To the casual observer, it is just a rock. Porous and crumbling, the large slab of Taihu limestone has been ravaged by the elements. To the more refined gaze, it simultaneously signifies the past, present and future. Its foundation symbolises its original sturdiness, while its weathered exterior highlights the effects of time and hints at the decay still to come. These connotations are invisible to many people. But the concepts are all there, just waiting to be appreciated by those who can read one of the oldest and most complex languages of China.

Taihu rocks are a common feature of Chinese classical gardens, which feature complex layouts imbued with deep meaning. Each stone, pond, path, stream, pagoda, bridge, walkway and flower is meticulously positioned within these gardens in accordance with philosophies more than 2,000 years old. Together, they form a language that hides in plain sight. It is decipherable only by people who have a grasp of Taoist beliefs and how these ideas have shaped the design of Chinese classical gardens for millennia.
ever exist. It is the past, present and the future all at once. It is the state of flux, of constant evolution in which our world lives. Chinese classical gardens attempt to portray this simultaneous sense of beauty and fragility. This may seem a needlessly complicated idea upon which to base the design of a garden. But in ancient China, classical gardens were not merely green spaces where people communed with nature. They were high art. They were expressions of intellect. They were symbols of religious dedication.
Key among these guiding philosophical principles is the concept of the Tao. In Taoism, one of China’s oldest and most influential belief systems, the Tao is all that has existed and will
From the time of China’s Han Dynasty (206BC – 220AD), the design of classical gardens has been linked to landscape paintings. These art forms developed side by side, each drawing inspiration from the other. Traditional Chinese paintings focused heavily on nature, brimming with snow-draped mountains, crystalline rivers, verdant forests, lush plains and pristine lakes. Historically, the difficulty of this task varies, depending on whether the garden designer is making an Imperial garden or a private garden. The former is typically located outside the city’s limits, spread across a large parcel of land and intended to merge with its natural environment. The latter, meanwhile, is confined to the grounds of a residence, intended to be smallscale recreations of the natural environment. The most famous surviving Imperial gardens are in northern China – Beijing’s Summer Palace and the Chengde Mountain Resort. When I visited the Summer Palace, which was
first built in 1750, I was struck by the way it carefully blends its natural features of hills and lakes with artificial constructions like halls, palaces, pavilions, temples and bridges. This achieves the Taoist aim of balancing the works of man with nature. There is similar harmony at the Imperial Xu Garden in Nanjing, a peaceful space dating back to the 1300s. Another ancient Chinese philosophy is evident at Chengde Mountain Resort, a sprawling complex of Imperial palaces, temples and gardens spread through forested hills 150 kilometres northeast of Beijing. Built in the 1700s, the gardens at Chengde were constructed using the principles of feng shui. This Chinese belief system aims to organise interior and exterior spaces, so humans are in harmony with their environment. Feng shui, which has been used in Chinese architectural and garden designs for more than 1,000 years, dictates that a space should be

This strategy of concealing and revealing became central to the layout of private gardens since then. Because these gardens must be attached to homes, they often had to be squeezed into small plots of land. Within these boundaries, artists tried to create microcosms of nature. Mounds symbolised hills. Rocks signified mountains. Ponds represented
In this way, the gardens boasted two spirits. One form of energy came from its natural attributes and the other from the artistic choices of its creator. Visitors to these gardens are not just interacting with nature but also with the symbols and meanings embedded into the space by its designer. Having an especially intricate private garden is seen as auspicious, and aristocrats would compete to have the most impressive outdoor space at their homes. Many of these ancient private gardens no longer exist, although fine examples remain in Suzhou and Shanghai. Yu Garden in Shanghai was built in 1559 for a public official and is now one of the city’s top tourist attractions, thanks to its labyrinthine layout of graceful pavilions, zig-zag walkways and fish-filled ponds.

As with all classical gardens, visitors should not be able to see all its features at once. Instead, exploring these gardens is meant to be a journey. New experiences and sights emerge as one delves deeper into these spaces. This concept of garden layout is inspired, in part, by scroll painting, which was invented in the eighth century by renowned Chinese artist and poet Wang Wei. These paintings are slowly unwound from left to right, revealing each scene in sequence and allowing the artist to control what the viewers see and when they see it.

constructed with a natural flow, so humans can move through it instinctively and with ease. This is evident throughout China’s classical gardens, including those at Chengde. Paths and walkways guide visitors through the gardens, transporting them from tighter spaces out into open areas, from higher to lower ground, revealing views and concealing them soon after.

It is Suzhou, though, which still boasts more of these gardens than any Chinese city. This art form flourished here between the 16th and 18th centuries when there were up to 200 private gardens in Suzhou as wealthy locals used them as status symbols. Known as China’s hub of classical gardens, Suzhou boasts more than 60 historical green spaces that are still intact. I slowly climbed to the crest of the oldest of Suzhou’s gardens, Tiger Hill, which dates back almost 2,500 years. As I stood under the towering Yunyan Temple pagoda, I looked down at this enormous Imperial-style classical garden, with its sequence of carefully arranged groves, ponds, streams, paths and pagodas. Even more impressive is the nearby Master of the Nets Garden. I marvelled at the way the designer of this private garden, built in the 12th century for an Imperial minister, managed to create a sense of immense space within an area of just 5,000 square metres. The similarly spectacular Lingering Garden and Humble Administrator’s Garden in Suzhou are two and five times that size, respectively. The philosophical concepts behind these gardens are not entirely hidden. Throughout many of these spaces are signs emblazoned with calligraphy of Taoist or Confucian quotes,

which often cryptically hint at the meaning of that section of the garden. This is one of the great contrasts of these spaces. They were designed both for intellectual stimulation – for the pondering of Taoist philosophy – and for switching off mentally and entering a state of meditative bliss. As I explored these gardens in Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai and Suzhou, I found myself both relaxed and invigorated by more than 2,000 years of artistic endeavour. I do not fully understand the coded languages of these gardens, but there is no doubt they have spoken to me. ■

7 But the art stayed in PoHo: it simply moved to the streets. Today, walls and doors and lamp posts are crowded with street art, and it’s not just spray paint graffiti and tags. There are ‘invaders’ (that’s 3D or mosaic art), ‘slaps’ (or stickers) and stencils, and ‘yarn bombs’ (guerrilla knitting!) too. Little PoHo is buzziest on Sundays, when people selfie the street art before sharing lunch (on social media, that is) at the area’s eclectic eateries such as Frantzen’s Kitchen, a Scandi restaurant on a corner plot that coolly looks both ways: to its Nordic roots and to Asian moods and ingredients. Think ‘sashimi of Norwegian salmon’. Nearby, Mrs Pound is an Instagram-worthy speakeasy with an intriguing line in retrodiner dishes and a secretive facade that resembles an old Chinese name stamp shop. And around the corner on Hollywood Road, Chachawan does earthy larbs and gai yang (grilled chicken) as unselfconsciously as anywhere in Thailand’s Isan region. Chachawan is one of a string of restaurants run by Yenn Wong. With a reputation for eyecatching spaces offering authentic cooking, she has successfully joined forces with British chef Jason Atherton on several ventures. Wong also

brought in locally born, French-trained David Lai to be culinary director at Fish School, her restaurant that championed local seafood. “People want a direct connection with their food,” Lai says. “To know who caught it, how it was caught, that the fishermen’s livelihood is secure.” Alas, Hong Kong restaurants are no less vulnerable. Wong and Lai couldn’t make Fish School viable despite their wealth of creative and business talent, so it sold up. Pedigree can’t fight the brute force of Hong Kong’s high prices and saturated market.

Lai gets satisfaction from hand-picking ingredients, changing a menu weekly, and making daily specials from small quantities – a process that he can make work at Neighborhood, his restaurant (off a lane off Hollywood Road) that opened a year before Fish School, in 2014. This year at 37th spot on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list, it’s still getting nods and, more importantly, its fill of customers. I follow Lai across the harbour to the Nelson Street wet market on the steamy streets of Mongkok. The chef looks at home, chatting with stallholders and buying handfuls of whatever takes his eye. We then sit and chat in a greasy-spoon café while the kitchen flashfries seafood for us. “With restaurant space so tight, costs so high, with customers questioning where and especially what they eat, you learn to be efficient,” says Lai. This brings Lai’s first venture to mind.

Fish School was situated on the edge of Sai Ying Pun, a graffiti-tinged grid of streets two stops from Kennedy Town on the west of Hong Kong Island. Its neighbour, Locofama, an organic restaurant that sources as much produce as possible locally, is now in its sixth year. According to founder Larry Tang, it wasn’t a “calculated, strategic move” to set up a little out of the main action, but they have never underestimated links with the local community – on Sundays, for example, Locofama hosts pet adoption events – and they adapt the menu to their regulars’

The moment you take a seat in ACT café, though, you realise that this is indeed the very best side of WCH. It has sweeping views of Aberdeen’s typhoon harbour (plus iconic old-school floating restaurant Jumbo). Hua wanted a coffee business that traded directly with growers. So, she went to Africa and came back with some beans and a love for the continent. Eventually, she opened ACT, where apart from a superior cup of joe, they also serve up moreish food such as rolex (a chapati-like flatbread from Uganda rolled around meat or fish and salad). Farther along Heung Yip Road, Sensory Zero manages to juggle the coffee/café concept too, so that whether you’re simply after a ristretto or a Japanese risotto, it fits the bill. changing tastes. “People like Hong Kong flavours again these days.” Tang concedes that if a business is to succeed, part of the battle is won if it’s positioned at the heart of a district. Try telling that to Charlene Hua. Her Africa Coffee and Tea (ACT) café is on the 15th floor of an office high-rise on the seemingly ‘wrong’ side of Wong Chuk Hang. ‘WCH’ is a workaday district in the south of Hong Kong Island, a box-park of 1960s and 1970s warehouses and multi-occupant factory buildings. It was a little out of the way – until the South Island transit line arrived in 2016 – but that was part of its arty allure. Galleries and design agencies opened there at the turn of the decade, followed by a handful of restaurants, then hotels. Despite first appearances, WCH is rather easy to eat your way through, from stalls in Nam Long

Changgih Designs empowers artisans in Sabah to produce clothing and accessories inspired by the beauty of Borneo. Words Carolyn Hong | Photography courtesy of Changgih Designs
goingplacesmagazine.com | 54 | October 2019
Having baby daughters at around the same age brought the two young mothers together for coffee, and to make fun crafts like hairbands. But after just three hairbands, Joanna Moss and Bethany Dawson began to think bigger.
spotted the infinity scarf on a trip back to the U.S. and excitedly sent photos to Moss. That became their first product under the Changgih Designs brand name – a scarf made from fabric with local designs that were joined at both ends to form an infinity loop.
They tossed about the idea of creating a line of baby clothing adorned with the motifs of Malaysia’s eastern state of Sabah, where they both live. The idea morphed into setting up a small enterprise to engage local women artisans to make their products.
The first infinity scarves were made by Mia, a widow who lives near Sabah’s capital of Kota Kinabalu, whom Dawson met at a tailoring shop owned by Mia’s sister-in-law. Dawson had asked for advice on stitching the scarf, Mia offered some, and Dawson asked her to work on the first batch.
“That was Bethany’s idea, and I thought it was a great one. If we are going to do something big that will take us away from our families, it should be something worthwhile,” said Moss, one-half of the social enterprise Changgih Designs. Dawson is, of course, the other half. That was in 2015, when both their children were less than a year old. They both knew how raising a family can leave a mother with little space to pursue other activities or earn an income. They realised that many women were in the same boat, and some really did need income for their families. They wanted to enable these women to work from home, become financially stable and develop their skills, while still being able to care for their families. “We both have such a deep love for Sabah and wanted to give back somehow,” said Moss, who was born and grew up in Sabah after her Singaporean parents moved there. Dawson is an American who moved to Sabah with her husband a few years ago. They took a leap of faith to design baby onesies with Sabah motifs, but that didn’t sell well. Things suddenly changed when Dawson

The scarves sold out in no time. They sold so well that Changgih Designs had enough to fund a prototype of their next product, a tote bag that was sturdy, spacious and stylishly Sabah. That, too, sold well. Changgih ploughed back the profits into new products, expanding to wristlets and wallets. The breakthrough came when a local travel agency ordered 1,000 wallets as gifts for their clients. Moss recalled that they were initially doubtful about such a large order as they engaged only a handful of artisans. But the agency encouraged them to take it as a challenge to find and train more artisans. “Because of their patience, we were able to double the number of artisans,” said Moss. That brought in the funds for their long-held dream project – to design their own textiles.
1 1–2. Changgih Designs wants to create jobs for Sabah's artisans that provide a fair income, a safe environment and opportunities to grow 3. Bethany Dawson (L) and Joanna Moss (R) founded the social enterprise about four years ago
They hadn’t designed patterns before but knew they wanted a Sabah motif. They took their inspiration from the Dusun farm hat called sirung and padi stalks. Anxious that their designs should reflect the Dusun cultural heritage respectfully, they made sure to do their research and to seek the views of their artisans and indigenous elders. “We also wanted to know the stories related to these items,” she said. The designs were handprinted on fabric in Indonesia and arrived in huge, beautiful bales – unwashed. But as the fabric shrinks up to five centimetres upon washing, they couldn’t use it to make any item. It won’t do to have a bag or scarf shrink into strange shapes after being washed by customers. Mustering all their grit, Moss, Dawson and friends spent two weeks in self-service

Savouring their hard-won success now – four years later – Moss and Dawson are still determined to ensure that their business pivots on empowering women and serving the community. “The number one way which we want to use our brand for good is to create jobs that provide a fair income, a safe environment and opportunities to grow,” said Moss.
launderettes to wash every single metre of the fabric, hanging it in their homes to dry. Their children found it great fun to run beneath the billowing cloth; the women were utterly exhausted. But when the fabric dried, it was so gorgeous that they felt it was worth all the pain. This unique Changgih Designs textile was turned into its first Fall Collection of women’s wear,

As such, they empower the head artisans to determine the production price of items and the women to decide for themselves how many products they will make in a set period. The women choose their own hours and work around their family schedules. They are also assisted to become better seamstresses through skills training held at least once a month, taught by the head artisans. New recruits attend a training programme, held over a few months, to learn the A-Z of sewing. By the end of the programme, they will be able to sew competently and will also get a sewing machine each.
Changgih Designs provides these machines, purchased at a discount, through its Give10Sabah programme, where they return 10 percent of proceeds to community projects such as disaster relief and English classes. Some of the artisans, including their first seamstress Mia, have moved on to start their own sewing businesses. From a casual chat over coffee at a kitchen table, Changgih Designs has grown to a team of five part-time staff, working with 10-15 artisans, with another 20-30 in training. It now has an office space in the Sabah State Museum, where it also organises regular batik printing workshops. They dream of opening a full-fledged vocational sewing school one day and to grow Changgih Designs into a fully fair-trade and eco-friendly business. “It is a business that gives back to the community, but it has also given back to Bethany and me. Changgih is ours and our artisans’ as well,” said Moss. “It blossomed from the friendship, trust and love we have with each other.” ■

Inilah bedak sejuk – sejenis produk kecantikan tradisional berasaskan beras tapai.

As you wander the countryside of Balik Pulau in Malaysia’s Penang state, you may come across trays of dainty, teardrop-like beads drying under the scorching sun. These are called bedak sejuk or cooling powder, a traditional beauty product made from fermented rice. Since the 1970s, it has been the main source of income for the Yeoh family. Yeoh Sing Huat took over the family business in 2016, barely a year before his father passed away. The bedak sejuk maker explains that what we consider a traditional trade now was very common back in the day.
1 2
“In the past, most people could make bedak sejuk on their own. The older generation would have the resources, so they would have the knowledge. When all the families can make it, it is hard to turn it into a business.” Apart from making bedak sejuk, his father supported the family by making belacan (shrimp paste) and rearing pigs. Eventually, it became more convenient for people to buy the cooling powder instead of making it, and Yeoh’s family was the only one left standing. The main ingredient of bedak sejuk is rice, known for having nutrients and antioxidants that help to relieve acne and brighten skin. Seems like Japan and Korea aren’t the only ones to make use of this beauty secret – Penang has its own version too! To make the powder, Yeoh washes broken rice and soaks it in water for at least one month to ferment. He then blends the fermented rice into a paste, which is later filtered and hung out to dry. When he is ready to make the powder, Yeoh mixes it with water to form a viscous paste. His family used to pipe it out one by one

with piping bags but have since switched to handmade moulds to speed up the process. Scooping a ladle each time, he drags a slab across the mould, letting the paste drip through. Too fast or too slow, he adds, and it can result in uneven or broken beads.
The beads are dried under the sun for several days before they are packed in glass bottles, ready to be sold.

Yeoh estimates that he can make up to 20 kilogrammes per day, the equivalent of around 100 bottles. His customers are mostly old-timers who swear by the benefits, but many people interested in homemade, natural products have also started looking for such cooling powders. Some people, especially teenagers, use it as a face mask and rinse it off after half an hour.

The main ingredient of bedak sejuk is rice, known for having nutrients and antioxidants that help to relieve acne and brighten skin.
Susah nak cari botol begini
_Oct 2019_Warisan.indd 58
di Pulau Pinang sekarang. Hanya boleh dibeli di KL,” ujarnya.
Others rub the paste over their face and leave it on overnight.
While he has two brothers who assist him when they are home, Yeoh is the only one running the business full time. “To be honest, this is not a lucrative business. Now you can’t even find these glass bottles in Penang. I have to source them from KL.”
“Sebenarnya, rezeki daripada kerja ini masih jauh lebih baik berbanding saya bekerja dengan orang lain. Memanglah kerja ini susah dan memenatkan. Tetapi kalau bukan saya yang buat, siapa lagi?” katanya. ■
Ingin mengetahui cara-cara penghasilan bedak sejuk, anda boleh menempah sesi lawatan bersama Yeoh di LokaLocal. loka.fun/bedak-sejuk-by-yeoh
His determination to continue with the family business is largely driven by the love for his father. Yeoh stepped up to the mantle when he saw how backbreaking it was for his parents to continue the business in their golden years. To share their story and legacy, he and his brothers welcome visitors into the home to experience the production process, giving them an insight into a traditional trade still surviving on Penang island. “It still has a better pay than if I were to work for someone. Sure, the work itself is more laborious and tiring. But if I don’t do it, no one would.” ■

SPECIAL FEATURE
Oleochemicals: M
alaysia’s oleochemical industry is a young one, beginning only as recent as the 1980s. Today, Malaysia has become one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of palm-based oleochemicals, with 19 active oleochemical plants that have a combined capacity of 2.7 million tonnes.
Greening the Future of Beauty and Personal Care
Oleochemicals refer to chemicals derived from oils and fats, which have been broken down into their constituent fatty acids and glycerol. These products can be further processed to produce various types of oleo-derivatives. The industry itself can be segmented into basic oleochemicals and derivatives. Palm-based oleochemicals have properties that make them suitable for the beauty and personal care industry – cosmetics, skin care, hair care, and oral care. They provide lubricity and are known as being humectants, emulsifiers, emollients, viscosity modifiers, lather improvers, conditioners and for providing lustre and sheen. In layman terms, they moisturise, retain moisture, soften, cleanse, nourish, protect and stimulate. Palm fatty acids are also used to produce highquality detergents and soaps. Palm-based soaps have superior perfume retention compared to tallow-based soaps. The fatty acid and glycerin content of these soaps also impart cleaning and foaming powers, acting as skin conditioners for smooth and healthy skin. Basic palm-based oleochemicals and their derivatives can be used as raw materials for the production of active ingredients or surfactants in detergents and other cleaning and washing products. The active ingredients have good cleaning ability, foaming power and foam stability. Natural and made from sustainable sources, palm-based oleochemicals promote the development of green chemistry with environment-friendly properties. Compared to petrochemicals, oleochemicals biodegrade quickly and effectively. They also play an important role in reducing the industry’s reliance on petroleum-based products.

CABIN LUGGAGE HANDLING Passenger and crew safety onboard our flights is our highest priority. In compliance with the airline’s policy and in observing Occupational, Safety and Health Regulations requirements, cabin crew are no longer required to stow passengers’ hand luggages into the overhead stowage compartment. This is to minimise occupational hazard and ergonomic risks faced by cabin crew in the aircraft. Cabin crew on duty will, however, assist passengers travelling with infants, young passengers travelling alone, the elderly, and passengers with reduced mobility. Passengers who are fit and in good health must carry, stow and secure their own hand luggages on board. Hand luggage exceeding the 7kg weight limit is required to be checked in before boarding.
PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PED) For safety reasons and in line with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia guidelines, mobile phones and all PEDs must be switched off once the aircraft has moved out of bay/gate for departure. Whilst cruising, devices placed in flight mode may be used. The devices must again be switched off during the approach for landing until the aircraft is parked at the terminal building. Devices transmitting strong signals must remain switched off throughout the flight, until disembarkation. The Captain may prohibit the use of devices that can interfere with the aircraft’s system.
LITHIUM BATTERIES Lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries for portable electronic devices (PEDs), including medical devices must not exceed 2g for lithium metal batteries and 100Wh for lithium ion batteries. All spare batteries, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for PEDs must be carried in passengers’ carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. For PEDs containing non-spillable batteries, they must be 12V or less or 100Wh or less. A maximum of two spare batteries may be carried. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.
NO-SMOKING POLICY Smoking, including the use of electronic cigarettes, is prohibited on all flights.
ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES Electronic cigarettes must be carried on one’s person or in carry-on baggage only. Recharging of the device in-flight is not permitted.
COMFORT & CARE Personal care, baby paraphernalia and first aid treatment are available upon request.

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS From anime to Pokémon to karaoke, Japanese popular culture has fuelled global entertainment for decades, but nothing grips the world’s imagination quite like Gojira, better known as Godzilla. In his first Japanese movie in 1954, Godzilla was 50 metres tall, as tall as Tokyo’s tallest buildings, but by the time he made his American movie debut in 1956, he had grown to 122 metres, because things have to be bigger in America. Now he is much, much bigger. For centuries, Godzilla slept undisturbed deep under the oceans that had always protected Japan, but then he was awoken by radiation from the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Since then, he has crushed many cities in his battles against other huge monsters (including King Kong) without caring for humans but without hating them either. Godzilla has just been doing his own thing, just like planet Earth, which is why he has now become a powerful metaphor for global audiences’ fears about environmental catastrophe. Godzilla: King of the Monsters is the second film in the new Hollywood series, and it’s good because they finally get that Godzilla is a myth, a legend, a parable. Seen mostly through the eyes of the feisty young daughter of two scientists with opposing views on how to deal with the monsters, it tells of an epochal war of Titans where humans are feeble and small, be they scientists, eco-terrorists, governments or the military. Godzilla is immensely powerful, but he is not a King Kong with spikes and scales. He has no conscience, no care but no hate. We can awake him, but can we control Godzilla?

TOY STORY 4
STUBER! From Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid to Zootopia, the ‘buddy movie’ has been a staple genre of Hollywood movies. Two people are thrown together, have an adventure, and find friendship along the way. It’s such an old story that it can be endlessly played with or subverted. Stuber is a funny updating of the buddy movie, where two polar opposites are thrown together because one of them is a part-time Uber driver. Kumail Nanjiani has become an unlikely master of deadpan comedy, simply laying out his lines with flat disbelief. In Stuber, he plays a hardworking shop assistant who is a part-time Uber driver. He needs the money for an unrequited love, but he also desperately wants to maintain his five-star review status, so he’ll accept any humiliation. In a big step towards becoming the new Arnold Schwarzenegger, Paul Bautista plays what he is, a massive physical presence but with comedic skill. He plays the hard-bitten cop who must take an Uber because he’s had a temporarily blinding eye surgery. An adventure follows. You might think you know what’s going to happen, and you’ll mostly be right, but it doesn’t matter because these characters are refreshingly different. Check out a funny scene when Nanjiani tries to work out Bautista’s ethnicity. Stuber is a fun ride. And does Nanjiani’s character maintain his five-star status? Of course he does.
From Toy Story to Toy Story 4, audiences have been taken on a 24-year emotional rollercoaster by a bunch of ageless toys. Who could forget that heart-wrenching scene in Toy Story 3 when they all hold hands while falling into the furnace? That’s right, 24 years. Much has changed since then: children who saw the first Toy Story are now in their 30s and cowboys are not popular toys anymore. But the makers of Toy Story 4 have kept up to date. Voice actors from popular 1990s comedy shows like Cheers and Home Improvements have been joined by newer stars likes Rashida Jones (who co-wrote the film), Tony Hale and Jordan Peele. Toy Story 4 has a newer feel, and a slightly darker or more adult feel. One character (I won’t say which one) has an existential crisis when he (or is it she?) suddenly doesn’t know what purpose he serves in life (alright, it’s a he). And cowboys aren’t popular toys anymore. At the beginning of the film, the toys are grateful to be reunited with a child who wants to play with them but not with Woody (Tom Hanks). Our old friend Woody sits abandoned and ignored in a cupboard. So, Woody embarks on a journey of rediscovery. Is this the last Toy Story? I hope not. These stories about the end of childhood are always touching, and there are also always new childhoods just beginning.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Stuber and Toy Story 4 are playing onboard. Check your in-flight entertainment system for channel information.

FROM THE PRODUCER’S CHAIR Pulang is playing onboard. Check the movie section in your in-flight entertainment system for channel information.
Tell us a bit about yourself. I run Primeworks Studios, which makes films, TV shows, animation, toys and merchandise. I started out in the music industry, trying to sell urban music to Malaysia. Then I got into TV, where I launched 8TV and then went on to run a TV station at Media Prima. As a teenager, all I wanted was to become a music producer. Making movies was the furthest thing on my mind! Pulang is based on real-life events that happened in your family. Why did you decide to make a movie out of it and how much was biographical? I had been on a quest to find my grandfather’s grave, and after much research, I finally found it in Liverpool. That’s when I realised there is a story to be told here. Why did this guy leave his family? Why did he leave my grandma? He loved her completely and promised he was only going to be away for a few years, so why didn’t he come back? In terms of biographical, it’s actually 50-50. The events are true, but some characters were shaped to add to the dramatisation. Without giving away spoilers, what triggered the desire to search for your grandfather? There was a rumour about a grave. Or could he still be out there somewhere? What triggered me to go look for him, whether or not I find his grave or find a living and breathing person, was about finding my roots and figuring out what had actually happened. The story spans three generations, told over a period of 61 years. In terms of storytelling,
_Oct 2019_GPE.indd 87
was it difficult to put the film together and ensure that it translated well onto the big screen? It was difficult because I was too close to the subject. I started the story by following the grandson as he was looking for his grandfather. Then the story flowed back to the love story between the grandfather and grandmother. Then going into how the son went around looking for him. So, the story had three generations. When I brought it to the amazing scriptwriter Mira Mustaffa, she said we should focus more on one set of characters and we all agreed that it’s got to be Othman and Thom, who (are) the first generation. So, the son and grandson became supporting characters to this grand love affair, people call it cinta agong, between these two and the subsequent anguish of this woman waiting for her husband to return. Pulang is beautifully shot, with Hollywoodlike aesthetics. Was there a particular reason behind using this style? It was the director Kabir Bhatia’s direction. He said movies are not just about the story, but the audience has to be pulled into the world of the characters. So, every single shot had to be beautifully captured. He actually found the time to get the right light according to when the sun was setting and rising. The set design was also incredible. For instance inside the ship, it really looked like the ship was rusty and ‘clanky’. You could really feel how claustrophobic it is being in there. The CGI (computer-generated imagery) was also amazing as we could see all the places that were recreated for this movie, from Durban in South Africa to Iceland and Liverpool.
What were some of the challenging aspects of putting the film together? The biggest challenge was the scale of what we wanted to do because Othman travels the world in the story. But the thing is we can’t go everywhere, like to Iceland, South Africa and Madagascar; it was just not worth it, cost-wise. To recreate that and have the right CGI to make it look just right, that was the big worry for us. We knew we had a great story, but we had to do it justice. Pulang has a unique theme not commonly seen in Malay films. Were you surprised by the film’s reception among Malaysian audiences? I was quite surprised by the reception because Malaysians usually don’t watch films like this. Malaysians, as a whole, prefer simpler and feel-good stories. So for us to do pretty OK at the box office and even better on secondary channels was amazing. I think it resonated with the audience because everybody likes love stories. Beyond the mass market, people watched it for the aesthetics and the story. That’s what we’ve been getting accolades for everywhere, the powerful story and production value. What is a key message you hope for audiences to take away from the film? No matter what adventures life takes you on, it all means nothing if you have no family to come home to. Othman should have realised that earlier and Thom should have drilled that into his head. At the core of it, the message is to appreciate your family.

Inspired by his grandfather’s search for a better life and the promise to his wife he failed to keep, Datuk Ahmad Izham Omar’s Pulang will tug at heartstrings. Here’s what he has to say about making the movie.
How do you think filmmakers and writers can continue pushing the boundaries of local cinema? One way is to come up with more varieties of stories and innovative ways to tell them. For us to improve, we have to also always work on our craft. We have to keep challenging writers to come up with new stories, push directors to think out of the box and drive screenwriters to turn out more compelling scripts. Then we will break the barrier of people thinking that Malaysian movies are not up to par with Hollywood. Movies like Pulang and a slew of other movies from around Asia have proven that great stories can come from anywhere. There is a lot of culture and heritage in Southeast Asia, a lot of amazing stories that need to be told and people are now realising that there is more (than) the standard Hollywood three-act fare. Why should passengers on this flight watch the movie? The message will resonate especially with travellers. You’re either going away from your family or you’re with your family or you’re coming home to your family. Either way, at the end of the movie, you will feel like you’ve got to give your family a hug. ■
