SHORT FILM
A FATHER’S LOVE Following the popularity of two short films produced by the Social Media team at Malaysia Airlines – Terbang, made in conjunction with Malaysia’s Independence Day in 2014, and Blessings, a story about the significance of Chinese New Year to its characters – comes Fitrah, made for the recent Aidilfitri celebrations. It centres on a Malay father’s genuine love for his adopted Chinese son. As both father and son reflect on the circumstances in their lives through narration and flashbacks, viewers are invited to reflect upon the nature, or fitrah, of life itself, the importance of acceptance, and making the most of our time on Earth. With the hashtag #bettertomorrow outlaying the message of the film, the short video also signifies the airline’s own journey and transition toward a better future. View this touching video, part of a series of short films entitled A Malaysian Story, on Malaysia Airlines’ YouTube channel. Blessings was recently awarded the No. 1 Top Performing Ad on the YouTube leaderboard. youtube.com/malaysiaairlines

STREET ART
1010, the street artist from Germany, paints what has to be his largest canvas yet: Boulevard Périphérique, the Paris ring road. Like many street artists, 1010 began refining his skill on small-scale objects such as low-rising walls and derelict buildings. It didn’t take long for 1010’s quirky style and talent for incredibly realistic 3D hole-in-the-wall illusions to gain attention from galleries, the press and the public. For his most recent commission from the Galerie Itinerrance, 1010 used over 400 litres of paint to create a gaping hole in the centre of the Boulevard Périphérique, covering an area of 4,500 square metres.

ART
STROKE OF GENIUS
When artist Sean Yoro, also known as Hula, took his art to the streets, he also brought it far beyond the limitations of street art. A surfer from Hawaii, Sean set out on his board with a collection of paints and paddled out to reach the walls of derelict buildings immersed in water. Here he painted large figures of women bathing in the pools, part submerged and adorned with tribal markings. The first in his set of murals is entitled Pu’uwai (meaning ‘heart’) and is inspired by “the silence beneath the surface of the water, when all you can hear is your heartbeat as everything else fades away.” His ingenious idea to paint somewhere away from the actual street has captured people’s imaginations around the globe, as have his eerie portraits of the beautiful bathers. hulaaa.com

Art, nature and architecture all coincide in The Infinite Bridge, a sculpture by Danish architect Studio Gjøde & Povlsgaard Arkitekter created in connection with the 2015 International Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. Situated on the beautiful coast surrounding the city of Aarhus, the circular bridge curves around from the land and stretches out to sea and sits between one to two metres above the surface of the water. Spectators can stroll right out into the ocean, evoking a curious sensation of walking on water. “We have created a sculpture that is all about experiencing the surroundings and becoming aware of the relation between the city and the magnificent landscape of the bay,” says Johan Gjøde, a partner at Gjøde & Povlsgaard. “Actually, it is nature, the city’s skyline, the harbour and the relationship to the water that is the true art piece.” gpark.dk

ANTARCTICA
For those who like their wildlife-watching spiked with adventure, Antarctica is the ultimate bucket-list destination. In the ‘warmer’ months of December to February, when there are nearly 24 hours of daylight, Lindblad Expeditions offers a 14-day tour to the Antarctic Peninsula that includes intrepid activities (think kayaking among towering icebergs or hiking to see the ghostly remnants of the whaling industry) and encounters with animals (whale-watching and leopard seal-spotting from Zodiac landing crafts). Thanks to Lindblad’s collaboration with National Geographic, the adventure continues on board with slideshows and presentations from naturalists, historians, and research scientists. Photography enthusiasts can get tips from National Geographic professionals. Enjoy cocktail hour while listening to the daily recap, or watch deep-sea footage from the ship’s underwater specialist. There’s even an onboard spa – if you can drag yourself away from the jaw-dropping panoramic views.
INTO THE WILD Hop aboard a cruise to get up close and personal with the wonders of the wild GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS
White-sand beaches, black volcanic landscapes, rich mangrove ecosystems and blue-water grottos, all populated by abundant and fearless wildlife – no wonder Charles Darwin was inspired by the Galápagos Islands. Celebrity Cruises’ 10-day Galápagos Expedition offers daily excursions to the best spots in the archipelago where you will experience up-close encounters with giant tortoises, fur seals, sea lions, lava lizards and endless birdlife. Snorkellers can take to the blue-water grottos onboard Santiago for reef sharks, sea turtles and rays, while the deep-sea snorkelling on Isabela can yield cormorants, penguins and even marine iguanas feeding on underwater algae. And back on board, the charming crew will present a slideshow of passengers’ meetings with wildlife during their trip.
ALASKA
Dive into the wilderness (not literally; the water’s freezing) on an Un-Cruise Adventure in Alaska where cascading waterfalls, remote fjords and calving glaciers give way to forests, caves and snow-covered mountains. You’ll see brown and black bears, wolves, seals (and their pups), orcas, porpoises, otters and eagles. Soak up Alaskan culture and heritage in the old town of Wrangell, or visit the salmon capital of the world, Ketchikan. Take to the water in a kayak or skiff, or stay on board for a presentation from a National Park Ranger. Un-Cruise’s small ships, personalised service and ‘leave no trace’ practices make for an intimate, hands-on experience – and no waiting in line.

Artistic Capital Rich in arts and culture, Adelaide oozes with charm Text Sophie Williams Illustration Nate Padavick
9am Start the morning by wandering around Adelaide’s Central Market (adelaidecentralmarket. com.au). Boasting some of the best local and fresh food with over 80 restaurants and stalls, the market is a great place to get a feel for Adelaide. Make sure to stop by Big Table for one of their famous breakfasts. Serving traditional cooked breakfasts alongside healthier options such as natural yogurt with pistachios, honey, and bananas, Big Table is a firm favourite with the locals.
10.30am
Hop into a taxi for the Botanic Gardens. The 16-hectare historical garden features a collection of plants both exotic and native to Australia. To get
the best of the gardens, head to the visitors’ centre first for information on which gardens are looking their best. One highlight is the Victorian Palm House, a glasshouse imported from Bremen, Germany in 1875.
11.30am Within the grounds of the botanic gardens is Adelaide Zoo (adelaidezoo.com.au), home to over 2,500 animals. Get up close to the natives including kangaroos, koalas, Tasmanian devils and wombats. Also at the zoo are Wang Wang and Funi, two giant pandas on a 10-year loan from China.
1.30pm A 20-minute walk through the grounds of Government House, the Stamford Plaza Adelaide
(stamford.com.au) is the best place to enjoy high tea. It serves English high tea with a modern twist, including quiches, sandwiches and curry puffs alongside sweet treats such as scones, waffles and pastries. If you’re feeling indulgent, order a glass of champagne.
2.30pm A five-minute walk along North Terrace, the South Australian Museum (samuseum.sa.gov. au) is home to the largest collection of Australian Aboriginal cultural artefacts. With over 3,000 artefacts on display including books, spears and arrows, the museum is a great place to learn about Australia’s Aboriginal history. The Pacific Cultures Gallery is also well worth a visit.
4pm Walk along King William Street to Adelaide Oval (adelaideoval. com.au). Considered one of the most picturesque cricket grounds in the world, the Adelaide Oval hosts some of the biggest events on the cricketing calendar, including the Ashes tournament. Take one of the Oval’s tours and be shown around by an expert guide recounting the venue’s history. The most recent addition to the Oval’s collection is the Bradman collection featuring objects and photographs from the private archives of Sir Donald Bradman, one of Australia’s most famous cricketers.
5pm Head back onto King William Street and catch the 263 bus
from the east side of the street to Glenelg, a seaside town just 20 minutes from the city centre. With white sandy beaches and a jetty, Glenelg is the perfect place to wind down after a busy day exploring the city. There are also some great shopping opportunities on Jetty Road – the famous Haigh’s Chocolates has a store that you won’t be able to stay away from.
9pm Finish off the day by visiting a typical Australian pub. Situated right on the beachfront in Glenelg, The Grand Bar (thegrandbar.com.au) is your typical Australian pub serving beers and wines with a friendly smile. The glass-fronted windows look out onto the beach with great ocean views.
7pm
Try the finest seafood at The Wharf (thewharf.com.au) in Glenelg. Renowned for its brilliant service, The Wharf serves popular dishes such as seafood chowder and Atlantic salmon. Make sure to ask what the special of the day is.
For those with tired feet, Adelaide offers a free city loop tour bus linking many of the city’s top tourist spots

n the depths of the Ecuadorean Amazon, the local wildlife wakes before dawn. As the MV Manatee, a 27-metre-long Mississippi-style riverboat, noses its way into the shore, the birds and the beasts along the banks of the mighty Napo River have aleady started their dawn chorus. Beneath a warming sky, passengers enjoy early morning coffee to the guttural booms of red howler monkeys and the screech of cobalt-winged parakeets. For most passengers, especially those travelling in such exotic locations as the Amazon, there's something about river cruising that adds extra spice to a vacation. Maybe it's the prospect of waking up each morning to another stunning panorama. Maybe it's the gentle rocking motion of the vessel at night. Maybe it's the thought of charting virgin territory like a latter-day Columbus or Cabot. For many people, tired of hotel check-
ins and airport lounges, a river cruise is simply about de-stressing the whole travel experience. "There's a lot to be said for making a journey where you only unpack once," says Joe Maloney, a vice president with Scenic Cruises in the U.S. As networks for trade and communication, waterways have always played a vital role in nation-building. As a result they are frequently bordered by thriving cultural hotspots, be they cities such as Manaus and Budapest, or temple complexes like Angkor Wat. "Rivers were effectively the highways of the past," Joe continues. "A cruise today often means a richly rewarding journey through the historical heart of a country, with access to fascinating culture as well as eye-catching scenery and wildlife." Eager to expore the scenery and wildlife of the chocolate-watered Napo, the passengers of the MV Manatee don lifejackets and prepare to board a trio
of metal skiffs lying alongside. Here in the pristine Ecuadorean rainforest, their tour will be unique and memorable. On a global scale, it's just one excursion among thousands that discerning river cruisers are now choosing to take each day. In a shrinking world, travellers are keener than ever to experience places that half a century ago would have seemed as far away as the moon. Tired of conventional resorts, they crave adrenaline and adventure in distant lands. From the Mekong and the Danube to the Amazon and the Yangtze, the number of river-based cruise vessels meeting this demand is burgeoning. According to cruise website Cruise Critic, no fewer than 15 river cruise lines have or will launch at least 40 new boats this year alone. Founded in 1997, AmericanScandinavian cruise outfit Viking Cruises is leading the charge, with at least 10 new ‘longships’ to be added to its fleet of 50plus vessels in 2015. The company offers cruises in Europe, Russia, Asia and Egypt as it caters to passengers from the Englishspeaking world. From 2001 to 2015, Viking witnessed an amazing 30 percent increase in North American passengers, compared to a mere 5 percent for oceangoing cruises over the same period. Other river cruise operators adding to their fleets include Scenic, which will launch two vessels in Europe this year (and one on the Mekong in 2016), while Tauck, Emerald Waterways and Avalon Waterways will all be cracking champagne against numerous new hulls as well. For many people, an oceangoing cruise aboard a supersized liner is an experience

still synonymous with the more mature, sedate traveller. Whether this rings true or not, it highlights a key difference between cruising the seven seas and navigating an inland waterway. "On an ocean cruise, the ship is the destination, with its many venues and amenities," says Larry Greenman, manager of public relations and customer service at Victoria Cruises, which operates boats along the Yangtze in China. "On a river cruise, the destination is the river, and the sights along its shores. Although you don't have to leave the boat, most people are tempted to do so on a regular basis." Being smaller, vessels used for river cruises are also far more intimate than their oceangoing cousins. "River cruise passengers get to know,

machines, beyond the swim-up bars and well-stocked libraries, the way river cruise passengers explore their terrestrial surroundings is also evolving. From truffle hunting and cycle tours to market visits and concerts in private palaces, it's all about immersion. "At Scenic, we include everything imaginable in the cruise fare, barring a haircut or massage," says Scenic's Joe. "This means butlers for every guest, e-bicycles for the adventurous, and multiple 'enrich' events – such as a night of pure culinary delight at the Pope's Palace in Avignon – to create memories of a lifetime." Immersion doesn't stop once passengers are back aboard. On a Rhine cruise, Viking passengers are invited to attend expert-led talks on the history of French impressionism, while Nile passengers are offered onboard lectures on Egypt's 5,000-year-old archaeological heritage. by first name, most of their fellow travellers and service staff," adds Joe of Scenic Cruises. "This makes the entire ambience of the cruise that much more special. You quickly find like-minded travellers, sometimes from different countries, to share a cocktail and swap stories with." With the number of boats and itineraries on the world's waterways rapidly changing, so is the whole cruising package. "There were days when a cruise on the Amazon meant sleeping in a hammock on deck," says Stuart Whittington, Head of Product at Journey Latin America, with a laugh. "Today, travellers enjoy ever increasing levels of comfort and worldclass cuisine." Uniworld's S.S. Antoinette, launched in 2011, typifies the development of the cruising experience. Passengers aboard this luxury vessel, which navigates the Rhine between Basel and Amsterdam, can enjoy the first-ever ‘pop-up’ restaurant, where the captain lowers the ceiling and walls to pass under low bridges. It's hard to think of a more interactive take on alfresco dining. Beyond larger suites, with their complimentary WiFi, iPads and Nespresso
is home to wondrous waterways. Many are still wild, some even uncharted – all boast spectacular scenery. But their real attraction is the fascinating culture of the land through which they pass. In a region where road travel is frequently tortuous, cruise ships plying their trade offer a serene transport alternative. The increase in river cruises is matched by a diversification in itineraries. While European rivers still dominate the list, new vessels and destinations are appearing all over Asia this year. From converted rice barges on the Mekong to remote villages in Myanmar, the possibilities for waterborne travel have never been so abundant or enticing. For aspiring Asian cruisers, the most difficult task is choosing a country. But even this won't be a problem for long, with Myanmar-based Pandaw River Cruises set to introduce a multi-country Mekong itinerary that extends from China to Cambodia. "We are now entering a golden age of river cruising," says Joe of Scenic Cruises. "People want cruise vacations where the destinations and on-shore experience are just as important as the boat itself. In Asia and beyond, river cruises are offering the right blend at the right time."

didn’t think I was the sort of traveller to go on a cruise. Being around many people exhausts me, small cabins induce claustrophobia, and the very idea of a predetermined itinerary turns me off. But when I wanted to see the Galápagos Islands, the volcanic archipelago where Charles Darwin studied evolution, I realised that the only way to visit the farflung islands was by joining a cruise. Aboard Metropolitan Touring’s Santa Cruz, I hopped from one uninhabited islet to another, meeting endemic species like marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies and fur seals. I snorkelled among playful sea lion pups and colourful fish, hiked up dormant volcanoes, and watched Galápagos penguins waddle around rocky coves. Each time I woke, I was in a different place with a new set of adventures. Cruises come in all sizes and configurations, from mega ships decked out with casinos to intimate vessels carrying just a few dozen passengers, a river boat making a quick jaunt to luxury liners sailing around the world for six months at a time. No longer just for honeymooners and pensioners, cruises now cater to all types of passengers – even a skeptic like me, who had to admit that
the Galápagos cruise might have been the most memorable trip of his life.
HERE’S OUR HELPFUL INDEX TO CRUISING:
All aboard! Cruising is like flying: check in your luggage, get your boarding documents, and get on with your carryon containing valuables. The earlier you go aboard, the more likely your room is not ready. No worries – use the time to tour the ship and get your bearings. Many cruise ships are like cities unto themselves, with the world’s largest passenger ship, Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas, carrying over 2,000 crew and 6,000 guests. Start from the top and work your way down, scoping out all the attractions you want to check out. Berth means the place where the ship is docked; fittingly, it also means your bed. Your cabin is a private sanctuary, typically a smaller (and more efficient) version of a hotel room. The smallest may not have exterior windows, while others offer portholes with ocean views. Some may be as lavish as the Grand Duplex on RMS Queen Mary 2, an Art Deco-inspired suite with a curved staircase. Dining on cruises runs the gamut from
the proverbial midnight buffet to Silk Road, an eclectic sushi restaurant on Crystal Cruises staffed by Nobu-trained chefs. It’s worth checking out what options your ship offers before you get on board as some lines pre-arrange your dining schedules. You’ll never be bored with on-board entertainment, which is becoming more ambitious each year, like Royal Caribbean’s productions of Broadway hits. Most ships have dedicated gyms, so you won’t have any excuse to interrupt your fitness regiment. Beyond the treadmills, Royal Caribbean offers activities like surfing, ice-skating and a dedicated sports deck so you can burn off those calories, al fresco. Few things like gratuities can cause as much anxiety: When and how much do you tip? Luckily, many cruise lines will suggest how much you should leave before disembarking, while others will simply add this to your bill. Luxury liners like Seabourn and Silversea explicitly tell you that tipping is not required or expected. In short: know before you book and you won’t have any surprises. Curious what it feels like to be a captain at the helm steering a gigantic ship? Sign up for the Ultimate Ship Tour on Princess Cruises, which affords a behind-the-scenes look at places like the engine control room to the top deck bridge or the ship’s command centre, where you’ll get to see the

state-of-the-art navigational equipment hard at work. The ocean is no longer off the grid since Norwegian Sky introduced an Internet café in 1999. On most ships you’ll be able to post selfies and chat real-time with friends – but remember that satellite connections are never as fast, reliable, or cheap as what you’re accustomed to on land. Maybe you can try using your cruise as your net addiction rehab? Because … ... there’s something to be said about the joy of missing out, that blissful feeling of disconnecting from social media and just enjoying the moment without comparing your experience to what your friends are doing. You can always post pictures and make them jealous later. Families love cruises because they can be the most kid-friendly mode of travel. You’ll find a variety of family-orientated activities, from arts and crafts to treasure hunts, and babysitting services to teen cooking lessons. Disney continues to set the gold standard, enthralling kids of all ages with Pirates of the Caribbean theme parties, Andy’s room from Toy Story, and plenty of interactive games. But if you’re

taking a holiday from your children, you’ll also find adults-only options like Carnival’s Serenity and P&O’s Oriana. Think strategically when you’re preparing your luggage. Huge suitcases that don’t fit under the bed will take up precious real estate in your stateroom. Remember to pack for all occasions – swimming, casual strolls, and even (semi-) formal dinners. And don’t forget to bring a day bag; getting off the boat for day excursions is part of the fun. Most cruise lines offer medical care provided by doctors and nurses armed with common remedies. Still, you should bring your prescription drugs in your
carry-on. And travel insurance not only covers potential costs but also gives you peace of mind. You’ll end up covering vast distances while you’re sipping a margarita or napping, but these gigantic ships are no match for planes. A fast ship, Queen Mary 2, has a top speed of 30 nautical miles – or about 56 kilometres – per hour. Though some cruises are all-inclusive, many will have you incur onboard charges, from spa treatments to alcoholic beverages to optional on-shore activities. Sign up for cruise company email newsletters or work with a good travel agent to receive spending credit you can apply toward the costs. Most people go on cruises to see the world – so make sure you research all the ports of call. Sometimes where you land may be hours away from the destination. Cruises dock in Rostock, not Berlin, and Civitavecchia instead of Rome – which means hours of extra travel once you dock. One alternative to consider? River cruises like Viking’s Grand European Tour have become immensely popular because you can walk off the boat and be in the heart of the action. Even a veteran cruiser can feel queasy

after days riding the waves. Test out over-the-counter scopolamine patches, Dramamine, or diphenhydramine to see which has no side effects. You’ll prevent seasickness as well as mal de debarquement, the motion sickness that hits you after you return to land. Ever wanted to cross the Atlantic? Repositioning cruises, when ships travel from one seasonal destination to another
like a migrating pod of dolphins, cover long distances – often at a discount. Hop on these one-way journeys and you may find yourself stopping in Greenland en route from Copenhagen to New York. Cruises can be a wonderful place for singles to travel the world and meet other travellers. But brace yourself to be surrounded by honeymooners and families – and pay the single supplement that companies tack on for not sharing a room. Norwegian has a number of ships with dedicated studios for singles – which means you’ll always find other solo sojourners aboard, for instance, Escape, the line’s newest ship launching this fall. Tenders, or small boats that shuttle to land when the ship is too large to enter the berth, will take you to a range of shore excursions like zip-lining in a rainforest or wine tasting in Provence. A ship can contain dozens of different categories, from windowless inner rooms to grand suites. Work with a travel advisor to reserve the exact stateroom you want. But things can change, and rarely, lucky travellers have been known to receive a free upgrade to a better suite…with a verandah. The ultimate luxury of watching

Sail around the globe in 180 days with Oceania Cruises
the world from your own private space is worth the splurge. If you have the time and resources, consider a world cruise, which circumnavigates the globe. Oceania Cruises’ 180-day itinerary covers 46,068 nautical miles, from Miami to Fiji to India to Oman. The best part is, you only have to unpack once while you see the world. This ultimate cruise embarks in early January in 2016 and 2017. When it’s time to leave, opt for the express checkout by giving your credit card information in advance to beat the crowd. Want a more luxury experience? Consider smaller cruise lines like SeaDream that combine the exclusivity of a yacht with the amenities of a cruise. You may have slept on a Spartan twin mattress or on plush memory foam with chamomile-infused fibre. If you slept like a baby on the cruise, you may be able to replicate that sweet zzzzzzzzzz at home. Oceania is so proud of its mattresses that it sells them online.

reathtakingly beautiful – just one of the many flattering expressions that have been used to describe the land of Sabah, Malaysia’s easternmost state on the island of Borneo. Blessed with natural biodiversity, rich in indigenous and contemporary culture, and boasting a colourful and storied history, Sabah is the perfect destination for holidaymakers and adventurers looking for new and unique travel experiences. Sabah is renowned for pristine beaches and islands – most notably Sipadan Island, rated one of the best dive sites by numerous authorities. Travellers to Sipadan can rest assured that their holiday will be relaxing and, if need be, private and secluded. The island has no overnight facilities, as officials are keen on preserving its natural beauty. Accommodation can be found on nearby islands of Mabul, Kapalai, Mataking and Pom Pom – all veritable vacation spots as ravishing as Sipadan, teeming with marine life, colourful corals and majestic reefs. Another spot for fun in the sun and sand, the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park is a cluster of five beautiful tropical islands – Sapi, Gaya, Manukan, Sulug and Mamutik – each a destination in its own right. The marine park offers a unique island hopping experience, especially in the 250-metre zipline visitors can take to get from Pulau Gaya to Pulau Sapi as a shortcut. Between Manukan and Gaya is
Borneo Reef World (borneoreefworld. com.my), an activity centre on a pontoon where you can sign up for reef activities such as sea-walking, fun dives, snorkeling and even a sunset cruise with dinner. Meanwhile, Mount Kinabalu (mountkinabalu.com), with its highest point at 4,095 metres above sea level, remains ever popular with visitors. The beauty of Mount Kinabalu is that climbers do not need special equipment nor specialised training for the trek. As long as you are healthy, with reasonably good stamina, a “fast-track” day trip may be arranged (mountkinabalu.com) for those not looking to conquer the highest peak in Borneo's Crocker Range on the highest mountain in all of the Malay Archipelago, which also includes Indonesia, the Phillipines, Brunei and East Timor. Conifers, climbing bamboos, Agathis trees, orchids and orange Rhododendrons are among the sights along the trail on a 12-hour day trip, which takes you to the LayangLayang checkpoint before descending to Timpohon Gate for the transfer back to Kinabalu Park, and subsequently to
your hotel. If you were to go all the way up, you will discover jaw-dropping views, especially during sunrise, which earned the mountain and Kinabalu Park the designation of UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. If Mount Kinabalu is out of reach, Mount Trusmadi, at 2,646 metres, and Mount Tambayukon, at 2,579 metres, are two alternatives that will also yield excitement, insight and inspiration. Another way to get close to nature in Sabah is by participating in events conducted year-round by state tourism authorities, such as the Borneo Bird Festival (borneobirdfestival.com), held every year in October. Increasingly, Sabah is emerging as a bird-watching destination in the Asia Pacific region, with international researchers and bird watchers
congregating with the hopes of catching a glimpse of the rare and elusive Bornean Bristlehead with its bright colours of black, red and yellow. There are also the 59 species endemic to Borneo, out of the 688 resident and migratory birds that flock to Sabah annually. This year, the Borneo Bird Festival will be held at Kinabalu Park on 23-25 October. A joint effort by the Sandakan Borneo Bird Club and Sabah Parks, with support from the Sabah Tourism Board, the festival welcomed as many as 6,000 visitors in 2014 – a significant jump since its inception in 2009. It is widely recognised as being instrumental in creating awareness of these magnificent species

as well as the environment they live in among the younger generation, further affecting a sense of responsibility towards nature, while also enhancing eco-tourism activities. Of course, any mention of Sabah wildlife must include Sandakan and its Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Sanctuary. Opened in 1964, the centre is an institute focused on rehabilitating orphaned baby orangutans that have been rescued from logging sites, plantations, illegal hunters as well as individuals illegally keeping them as pets. The sanctuary is a bona fide orangutan welfare and research centre; some of its park rangers and tourist guides have received guidance and training from preeminent primatologist Dr Francine Neago, who is also the founder of the Sabah Wildlife Sanctuary. At the centre, located within the virgin rainforest of the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, there are about 60-80 orangutans at any one time. Visitors may view from a platform how they are nursed back to health and trained to survive before being released back into the wild. A new nursery for younger orangutans to learn and play was opened for viewing recently, where visitors can learn more about these primates and their behaviour. Next to the sanctuary is the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre – another excellent destination for learning about the wildlife of Borneo.
While in Sandakan, a visit to the Sandakan Memorial Centre, about a half hour’s drive from Sepilok, is highly recommended for history buffs. The site is a tribute to about 2,400 Australian and British prisoners of war held by the Japanese during World War II who died during the Sandakan Death Marches – a series of marches where POWs were forced to carry baggage and supplies on foot towards Ranau, 260 kilometres away. Those who were too weak to continue were shot dead or left to die. Only five Australian soldiers and one Brit were known to have escaped, helped by villagers. The event is even more tragic as it is believed that the last of the POWs died only a few days or weeks before the Allied victory that led to the Japanese surrender. For a very different trip back in time, taking the steam train on the North Borneo Railway will give you a taste of colonial life during the heydays of the British administration (borneotrails. com.my is one of many booking sites for this). A wood-burning British Vulcan locomotive, with carriages built in the style of coaches in the 1900s, brings you from the Tanjung Aru station to the small town of Papar, going past green or golden paddy fields and rustic villages. On board, passengers will be treated to breakfast, and later lunch, in wellappointed dining coaches, served by waiters in colonial uniforms. Finally, the Upside Down House in Tamparuli, about 45 minutes by car from Kota Kinabalu, is a fun and quirky destination to check out, especially for families. As one might expect, visitors will find furniture stuck to the ‘ceiling’ while they walk on the ‘floor’, making for great photo opportunities to remind travellers of the fun they had in Sabah.

Stem To Stern River cruising in Europe enters new gastronomic heights with imaginative menus and exciting shore excursions

s dusk hits, passengers start filtering into the opulent Crystal Dining Restaurant on board the Scenic Jasper. It’s the start of dinner service and already the space is buzzing. Waiters glide through the room ensuring everything is perfect, and guests select tables next to the expansive windows to take advantage of the moving Danube River vista. In the kitchen it’s a different kind of thrum. Executive Chef Exequiel Cruzat, who originally hails from the Philippines, is a calm and respected leader. He works meticulously with Sous Chef Nendi Andriansyah and the kitchen team to prepare various tidbits for tonight’s dinner. He carefully slices colourful roasted vegetables into diamond shapes (“to be served alongside our beef a la Scenic,” he explains), avocado is smashed into what will become avocado tartar (“it goes with the glass noodle salad”), and sea bass is brushed with housemade dressing and placed into the oven. “We use local produce where possible and always aim to offer our customers plenty of choices when it comes to dining on board Scenic Jasper,” says Exequiel. “They’re cruising with us to be spoiled!” In the dining room, glasses are filled with wines from the region the ship sails through, and customers peruse menus.
Dinner in the Crystal Dining Restaurant is à la carte and changes daily, while breakfast and lunch are lavish buffets that encompass a diverse range of foods to suit all tastes. Scenic Jasper is also home to the intimate 10-seater Table La Rive located in its own private alcove in the Crystal Dining Restaurant, Italian fine diner Portobellos Restaurant, and the casually elegant River Café. “The idea is that guests not only have changing daily menus to cherry-pick, they can also sample various cuisines and dine in different atmospheres,” explains Assistant Restaurant Manager Ica Tudor.

REVOLUTION
River cruise cuisine has come a long way in the last few years – a strategic move employed by cruise companies to cater to a diversifying audience who want to see Europe beyond the usual sights. In the last few years, menus have been revamped, new restaurants have been opened, culinary shore excursions have been introduced, and even food-themed cruises are becoming commonplace. The passengers of today are braver when it comes to tastes and are willing – and wanting – to immerse themselves in local culture, which is intertwined with food. Cruise companies are connecting customers with regional cuisine in many ways. When docking in Budapest, guests on the Scenic Jewels of Europe river cruise partake in a regional food evening. This entails schnitzels, goulash and pörkölt (meat stew), to name a few dishes, with typed-out explanations about the food, the history of the dish and details on how it’s prepared. “It’s not just about consuming local food,” says Ica. “Our guests want to learn about the areas we cruise through – and teaching through taste has got to be one of the most enjoyable ways to learn!”
Many other cruise liners dish up fresh, regional fare too. Uniworld use local suppliers who deliver direct to the galley kitchens of their ships; Avalon Waterways’ multi-course dinners are a showcase of local dishes such as sauerbraten (a pot roast) with potato dumplings and red cabbage in Germany or sugary apricot desserts in Austria. Viking River Cruises are well-known for their ‘Taste of ...’ events, where patrons are presented with an appetising feast showcasing dishes from the region (pretzels, leberwurst and lager Kölsch are some of the inclusions at ‘A Taste of Germany’).

FOOD TRAIL
Five European food-themed cruises
If you really love your food, consider taking a food-themed cruise for the ultimate in culinary indulgence.
1 4
Avalon Waterways has a number of wine- and beer-themed cruises scheduled for 2015 and 2016. Activities include tastings, brewery tours, winery tours and lectures on wine making, and beer brewing classes and talks.
Uniworld has a special Epicurean Adventure Programme where the focus is local drops from the areas the ship sails through. Activities include wine tastings, food-and-wine paired meals and cooking demonstrations.
2 5
Tauck’s Taste of France has four cruises programmed for 2016. Sailing along the Rhône River, French food and wine are obviously the focus. Cruise through vineyard country, learn the craft of pastry making in Paris, and visit local food markets in Lyon.

Join The Australian Women’s Weekly Food Director, Fran Abdallaoui, and Food Editor-atLarge, Michele Cranston, on Scenic’s Jewels of Europe culinary river cruise in October 2015. Eat schnitzel and apple strudel in Austria, learn how to make goulash in Hungary, and sample pretzels washed down with local beer in Germany.
Christmas market river cruises are a wonderful way to sample local food prepared during this festive time. Many cruise companies offer itineraries to sample gourmet treats such as sweet mulled wines, gingerbread, roasted chestnuts and much, much more.
THE X FACTOR
Today, a river cruise liner will usually house numerous restaurants that span various cuisine styles and gastronomic experiences. Specialty fine diners and swanky restaurants headed by distinguished chefs lure guests with their exclusive culinary offerings. In 2012, Scenic introduced Table La Rive degustation dinners on board its Space-Ship vessels. With just 10 seats per night, it’s an intimate experience guests rate very highly. APT has launched the Chef ’s Table on its Royal Experience cruises – a six-course meal with matching wines limited to 24 people per night. And APT’s fleet of Aria and Concerto river cruise ships is part of La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs – the world’s oldest international gastronomic association dedicated to preserving and promoting dining excellence. APT Executive Chef Primus Perchtold, who has 25 years experience of cooking on cruise ships and has won three gold medals at the European Championship of Culinary Art, led the campaign to have the European cruise ships inducted into La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs. He explains that it essentially comes down to consistently delivering food of the highest quality and served to the highest standards. “I pride myself in constantly staying on top of new trends and ensuring customers are served

the best of the best,” he explains. “And I work with friends who own fine dining restaurants and we meet and exchange our knowledge. It never gets tedious.”
SHORE EXCURSIONS
The epicurean movement is also seeing further development across the shore excursion ether as passengers seek to discover destinations by tasting their way through them. Travellers can explore colourful food markets while shopping with the chef when cruising with Scenic, or sample house-made Belgian chocolates when visiting a chocolatier in Brussels with Uniworld, or learn how to make fondant au chocolate when cruising with Viking River Cruises in France, or sample local wines in Dürnstein with Tauck. River cruise companies are tapping into a market that wants to see the world – and to understand that world by doing as the locals do. And if there’s one thing the populations around the globe have in common, it’s the gratification that comes with eating good food.

Its flagship finedining restaurant Cantaloupe serves innovative modern European fare, while Strato, sitting atop a flight of suspended steps that make up the stairs, is a casual Italian eatery. Some of the best artisanal, boutique wines from France and elsewhere around the world can be found at the Claret Wine Bar, while outside is Fuego – a South American-inspired bar serving exciting cocktails and tapas. A self-taught chef, and an apparent comedian, Christian says his mother was a terrible cook, while his grandmother was worse. As a young boy in Luxembourg, he had to learn how to cook as a matter of survival. Work brought him to places that expanded his culinary knowledge before he realised his true potential in gastronomy. As he puts it, “I have done a lot of different things in my life and about every five years I have changed careers. It’s the cooking that seems to have stuck. Maybe once you have found something
that you are passionate about, it is fulfilling enough to do for the rest of your life.” This passion has also led Christian down the path of show business, albeit still revolving around food and cooking as well as travelling. Last year, Christian hosted weekly TV programme Cooking For The Crown on Channel News Asia, where he visited royalty around the region, observing how the local delicacy is prepared and serving them to his distinguished guests. Doing the show gave him interesting insights into the lives of the bluebloods. “Doing Cooking for the Crown was sometimes fun and sometimes just wacky. Some of the crowned heads live in a completely unreal world and when that world ceases to exist and they hang on to past glory by a thread, it makes for very interesting conversations,” says Christian. Out of the limelight, Christian has been busy conceptualising menus for other eateries, including Acme Bar & Coffee on the ground floor of The Troika, The Daily

Christian does not see retirement in the near future

Grind in the upscale neighbourhood of Bangsar, Japanese restaurant Matsu at the E&O-owned Lone Pine luxury boutique hotel in Penang, as well as 1885 Grill at the unparalleled E&O (short for Eastern & Oriental) hotel itself. Describing himself as a “reasonably good tenor” while admitting that “I can see readers rolling their eyes” at this claim, Christian hopes to perform classical concerts while he has “about 10 more good years left in my voice box.” However, he does envision being in the food business for much longer. Retirement is not on his list for the time being. “I think it would be nice to slowly wind down, maybe in eight to 10 years. Hopefully, the business will still be booming and there will be younger, talented people with me who can slowly take over and run with it (but) it would be nice to always keep a foot in the door. I can imagine myself at 80 being a bit of a
“... I think the younger generations no longer see cooking as just a job, but as a fulfilling career and that is a very good thing” pain in the butt, and the staff going, 'Oh, oh, there he is again, complaining the sauce is not spicy enough and the wine is not cold'. Of course they will say yes to my face and then completely ignore the doddering fool I will have become by then, and they will probably be right.” Before that happens though, there are more restaurants to be opened, with Christian and his business partners looking at another three in the next 18 months. His personal wish is to see more local chefs succeed in the field. “There have been a lot of changes and I think the younger generations no longer see cooking as just a job, but as a fulfilling career and that is a very good thing,” says Christian, who prides himself on his ability to teach his chefs the real essence of cooking as opposed to mechanically following a recipe. He is more than happy when his staff come up with new ideas, adding excitement to the culinary landscape they are helping to shape.
Cook Like A Chef
Christian Bauer shares his recipe for Caprese, or Mozzarella and Tomatoes, with his own introduction Do I hear you say “boring!”? Well, that is actually the trick. You make something that everyone knows, so when you put the plates in front of your guests they think, “well, there’s another one of those” and then you knock them over with the best, most delicious and layered Caprese they have ever had the good fortune to stuff down their gullets.
Ingredients: SOURED CREAM
PESTO SAUCE
1nos Freshly squeezed lemon
5g Fresh thyme
Salt to taste
70g English parsley
PICKLED CHERRY TOMATOES
2nos Anchovies in oil
250g Cherry Roma tomatoes
50g Macadamia nuts (chopped)
200ml Japanese mirin (non-halal mirin contains alcohol)
200ml Extra virgin olive oil
Salt & black pepper to taste
1½ tsp Grated Parmesan cheese
FRESH MOMOTARO TOMATOES
100ml Whipping cream
25ml Extra virgin olive oil 4nos Fresh basil leaves
60g Fresh basil leaves
4 bunches of 6 Cherry tomatoes on the vine Olive oil
1nos Garlic clove (crushed and finely chopped)
1nos Garlic clove Salt & black pepper to taste
ROAST CHERRY TOMATOES ON THE VINE
Balsamic vinegar
2 big Momotaro tomatoes (or other really soft, tasty tomatoes)
Good grey sea salt, or pink Himalayan, or any other salt you may fancy 2 balls Buffalo Mozzarella
Method of Cooking: SOURED CREAM: Strain the lemon juice to remove pips and any pulp. Stir the cream gently with a spoon and very slowly add the lemon juice. The cream will thicken quite considerably. Be very careful not to let your cream curdle. Once thickened, keep it chilled.
PESTO SAUCE: Wash and dry all the herbs. Put the herbs into the blender with some of the olive oil and pulse quickly. Add the rest of the ingredients and pulse again. With the blender running, slowly add the remaining oil but work fast to prevent it from heating up and turning grey (This will make much more pesto than you will need, so schedule a pesto pasta for that week) PICKLED CHERRY TOMATOES: Mix the mirin with the olive oil, crush the basil leaves in your hand and drop them into the mix. Peel and crush the garlic and add it in. Wash and dry the cherry tomatoes and add them to the pickling liquid. Keep in the chiller overnight, or for up to three days. It is normal for the cherry tomatoes to become a little fizzy, as they will start to ferment. This is a good thing!
ROAST CHERRY TOMATOES ON THE VINE: Place each bunch of tomatoes, still on the vine, on an aluminium foil. This will make them much easier to handle. Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle a little balsamic over each bunch, salt lightly and grind black pepper over. Do not close the aluminium packets! Heat the oven to 180°C and roast the cherry tomatoes until they just start to peel, about 15 minutes. Keep at room temperature until needed. Present them roasted, but still clinging to the vine. If a few drop off, don’t worry, just try and place them so they look like they just dropped off. FRESH MOMOTARO TOMATOES: Cut each tomato into eight wedges, sprinkle with salt and leave on a plate at room temperature. Time this so they do not have to wait much more than half an hour.
PLATING YOUR MOZZARELLA & TOMATOES: 2 balls of Buffalo Mozzarella
4 big tablespoons soured cream 16 pickled cherry tomatoes 4 bunches of 6 roast cherry tomatoes on the vine 16 wedges of freshly salted Momotaro tomatoes 4 leaves of fried basil for garnish (optional) About 4 level tablespoons of pesto
Spread a tablespoon of the soured cream on each plate. Slice the Buffalo mozzarella and place half a ball’s worth of slices into your soured cream. Place 4 pickled cherry tomatoes on each plate. Strategically position 4 slices of salted Momotaro tomatoes on each plate. Dot each plate with about a tablespoon of pesto. Gently slip the roast vine cherry tomatoes on top. Garnish with the fried basil leaf if you made them. Serve.

Put on your thinking caps to unlock the secrets of these real-life escape rooms Text Tan Lee Kuen Photos SooPhye

ou’re locked in a room with three friends, and zombies are kicking their way in. The clock is ticking as you crack your heads over a series of puzzles that will allow you to exit the room safely, and away from the clutches of the Undead. Is the doll a clue or just a prop? What’s the significance of the writing on the wall? Before you know it, an ominous voice comes over the intercom, “You have 10 minutes left”, setting off shrieks and a renewed frenzy to crack the secrets of the room. If you enjoy puzzles, teamwork and working under pressure, then hop over to one of the real-life escape rooms popping up in cities from Kuala Lumpur to Brisbane and Los Angeles. Hugely popular in China and Hungary, it is said that these rooms originated in Japan as the brainchild of Takao Kato, an event planner and magazine publisher. In Kuala Lumpur, this new game is increasingly taking root with more venues cropping up to tickle the imagination and the brain. One of them, Escape Room (escaperoom.com), is now an international franchise with outlets nationwide and around the region, including Australia, Thailand and
Vietnam, and as far flung as Romania and the UK. Founders Jason Leung, Patrick Ong and Victor Lo first experienced playing a reallife escape room game in Hong Kong. “We were so blown away and inspired by the game that we decided that we just had to share this with the rest of the world. And so here we are in Malaysia,” says Victor. While most venues have a clutch of themed rooms, Escape Room has 26 themes spread out across its outlets, with detailed back stories to heighten the gaming experience. With these adventures, you could be seeking to escape a locked room of a haunted house, the cell of a Vampire King or the accursed ship of a notorious pirate. “Our latest theme, Space Voyager - Mission To The Moon, is one of our most sophisticated rooms to date, with its futuristic essence carved into the details of the room,” Victor says. When it was first launched, the games were designed by Jason and Victor; they now have a team of experienced designers on board to work on their ever expanding portfolio of themes. “Each challenge must have a teamwork aspect to it and it has to be smart enough to make you want to slap your forehead when you finally figure

it out,” says Victor. “We always try to push the envelope of conventional escape games by adding something that gives the room a memorable factor.” The beauty of real-life escape rooms is that each and every room is different, whether in the puzzles or the quality of the set-up. Some rooms are simply furnished with only pen and paper for tools. Some are dressed up according to theme, such as a Pharaoh’s tomb, and a few employ gadgets. “Instead of making up a theme so that we can use certain props or puzzles, we design the props and puzzles to accommodate for the theme and its story. We believe that it is all part of the
experience,” says Andy Hsu from Puzzled Room Escape (puzzledroomescape.com. au) in Brisbane, Australia. Hsu and his friends first tried a reallife escape room game in Taiwan and had so much fun that they decided to introduce it to Brisbane. Their operations are a lot smaller, running on two themes – one a murder mystery, the other about your first day at a prestigious academy. Beginners would go for the Puzzle Tech Murder, while puzzle veterans would opt for the Puzzled Academy. “It is a lot harder, but the puzzles are also more sophisticated and involving,” says Andy. If, however, the going gets much too tough for participants and they make no headway or drift too far off the plot, they can call for help and an Escape Master will appear with a hint or two. Breakout (breakout.com.my), located in Avenue K Shopping Mall and Nu Sentral Mall in Kuala Lumpur, employs a fantasy element to its games by introducing role playing. Participants assign themselves different roles, including a Light Bringer to carry a torch light and an Oracle, who gets to see the future by briefly going through a photo album of essentials in the game room. The games are created by Johnny Ong, Breakout’s Director of Creative

and Operation, as well as an electronics engineer and a magician. The themes at Breakout are imaginative. In one room, participants are crew members torn between leaving months of research in Mars or facing possible human extinction on Earth. In Testament of Tesla, your mission is to bring light to the world while working in the dark as in preNikola Tesla days. “The puzzles are designed according to the storyline of the themed rooms. To make the games more rewarding, the outcome of solving the puzzles comes with a ‘wow’ effect for the participants, such as crawling into a tunnel or opening a trap door in a secret wall,” says Johnny. At Lockdown (lockdown.sg), a Singaporean company with branches in Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta, games are firmly entrenched in real-life events. “We do not have fantasy themes. Every game is based on an incident that you usually read about in the newspaper. We try to make the puzzles fuse together with everyday items, so it gets the players excited when they realise how they can link these items together to solve a puzzle,” says Jonathan Ye, Director of Lockdown. Besides individuals and groups of friends, Lockdown has hosted birthday parties and corporate team-building events for Fortune 500 companies.
Jonathan attributes the surge in popularity of these games to their human element. “The current social media is causing us to lose that physical touch with each other, so such a game is a great activity and icebreaker,” he enthuses. Win or lose, it is the play and the camaraderie that defines real-life escape room games. To get the most of your gaming experience, Johnny of Breakout advises: “Don’t get too serious about winning the game. Enjoy the process of solving the puzzle and the design of every single thing in the theme room.”

Returning HOME An offer she could not resist
Having already decided to settle down in Houston, Texas for a while longer before possibly returning to Malaysia, a job offer from PETRONAS changed Emeliana RiceOxley’s plans. The company is the pride and joy of Malaysia, as she puts it, and it was an offer she could not refuse.
Living abroad offered a different lifestyle as well as different social and cultural perspectives. I had the good fortune to experience a diverse and inclusive work environment that encourages open and constructive feedback. The supportive and collaborative way of working made me more tolerant, adaptable and empathetic and I appreciate and welcome different ideas and views and social norms.
What were the key factors behind your decision to return to Malaysia?
The sense of pride and the opportunity to contribute to the nation, through PETRONAS, were the catalysts of my decision to accept the position and return home. The thought of leaving my children, Khalif and Khalisa on their own in the USA to continue their studies, was a heart-wrenching one. However, with the support from my husband, Robert and my family, I made the decision to return home. Working for PETRONAS and being with family members in Malaysia, whom I have not been with for years, helped provide comfort in that decision. How has your experience abroad made an impact on your TC_REP 2015_merdeka_GP panel ad_21X5_FA_OL.pdf professional life?
Name Emeliana Rice-Oxley Nationality: Malaysian Company PETRONAS Position Vice President, Exploration, Upstream Malaysia Years Overseas 7
What was your initial reaction when you were told of the opportunity to return to Malaysia?
Mixed feelings of happiness and sadness – happy that we would be returning home to work for the pride of the nation, PETRONAS, and to be with our family and friends. We missed our parents, brothers, sisters and friends. But we were also very sad as we were leaving our children and friends we made in the United States behind.

You’ve been working in the international oil and gas industry for 25 years. How has the local O&G 5/6/15 8:40 PM scene changed within that period?
The challenge of finding and monetizing discoveries in terms of success rate, efficiency, cost optimization and commerciality remains. The big and easy finds however, have already been found. The remaining opportunities are harder to find and require new ideas and novel technology to image, identify, discover and develop. Despite these challenges, the various Petroleum Arrangements offered by PETRONAS have created a conducive investment environment and attracted not only the big international oil and gas companies but also many smaller, independent local and foreign players, each bringing their own niche capabilities and healthy competition. This helps create a vibrant upstream business, selected service industry and the spin-off development of Malaysia’s O&G industry. It certainly makes Malaysia attractive for returning experts and expatriates alike. Sept 16 is Malaysia Day. What would you say to other Malaysians who are considering a return home?
Home is where the heart is, regardless of where you are – but as Malaysians, there is ‘something’ that ties us together and make us uniquely Malaysian. Malaysia is a relatively young country but we have come a long way since 1963. The way of life and opportunities that we get abroad is now available in our own backyard. Malaysia has so much to offer beyond the teh tarik, nasi lemak, rendang and family. And because of this, returning home should be an exciting decision to look forward to – to be a part of the Malaysian success story! Clifford belajar dengan sendiri cara untuk membaik-pulih barangan kulit Through trial and error, Clifford taught himself the tricks of the trade
Clifford dan isterinya telah membaik-pulih lebih 5,000 barangan kulit Clifford and his wife have restored over 5,000 items
pulih barangan kulit agar kelihatan seperti baru. Beliau membuka sebuah kedai membaiki barangan kulit.

THE ACCIDENTAL ARTISAN Restorer of leather goods returns used handbags to their former glory
In today’s fast-paced throwaway society, tossing out things no longer useful or pretty is a short-term convenience for many. But 65-year-old retiree Clifford Tan and his wife Lee Siew Mei believe in the art of restoring fine leather goods. They have worked on thousands of damaged goods over the last six years, giving them a new lease of life. The former project manager stumbled upon the craft by accident. “I sent my car for servicing and saw bottles of colours for car leather seats. There were conditioners, cleansers, and pigments. It dawned on me that I could use them for handbags. I don’t know why I thought of that. I didn’t know a thing about handbags then,” he says. Clifford then asked his wife’s friends if he could experiment with their handbags. Many were happy for him to do so. Through trial and error, he taught himself how to make old leather bags look as good as new. After some time, he set up a leather repair shop. To date, Clifford and Siew Mei have handled over 5,000 items, mostly handbags, including those from luxury houses Hermès, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton. Customers have also entrusted him with their jackets, shoes, and items made of fabrics like denim. From restoring a Prada Saffiano wallet scrawled on by a pen-wielding child, or filling in the cracks of a Fendi damaged by mould whilst in storage, Clifford is able to do it all. He can even change a bag’s lining from pigskin to lamb or calfskin for Muslim customers.

While minor repairs start from about USD50, the cost can go up to USD250 or more for a change of colour. “You cannot imagine how big the market is,” he says. His shelves are filled with tens of handbags waiting to be restored. Several Hermès bags hang on stands, in the process of being mended. With sales of luxury handbags posting high growth in Malaysia, leather restorers are in demand. With the introduction of a six percent Goods and Services Tax, coupled with the depreciation of the Malaysian currency, more customers are likely to send their handbags for repair rather than purchase new ones. Due to Malaysia’s humid weather, mould is common, besides wear and tear, scuffs and scratches. One of the most difficult jobs involves colour transfers, which patent leather handbags are prone to. While it is not easy to remove stains, the bag can be rescued by using several coats of paint to change its colour. This is a painstaking process, which may take up to six months. Clifford recalls a job involving a white Chanel Jumbo, which had discoloured. The only way to repair it was to change its colour to beige. “We don’t recommend a change of colour for all bags. Sometimes you do not get a good result, especially if it is too old or there is too much grease” from usage. Over the years, he has taught the skills of the trade to would-be bag restorers, including from Hong Kong, and he has plans to set up a facility to groom the next generation of leather artisans. Local clientele aside, Clifford has built up a reputation internationally too, and often receives handbags from overseas, all the way from China and Switzerland. “Many now realise there is something they can do for their bags. There is a little science involved, but you need a lot of patience and an eye for detail. Most importantly, you cannot be colour blind!” he jokes.

WOMAN ON A MISSION From mother of dragons to mother of John Connor, Emilia Clarke takes on Hollywood with Terminator Genisys
We all know her as mother of dragons, Daenerys Targaryen, in TV’s Game Of Thrones, but this summer marks Emilia Clarke’s first foray into Hollywood blockbuster territory, with her lead role as Sarah Connor in new Terminator reboot, Terminator Genisys. The film is the fifth installment in one of cinema’s most iconic sci-fi film franchises. Dating back to 1984, with the release of James Cameron’s original The Terminator movie, the series has had its ups and downs. The sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 1991 was a huge hit, with its groundbreaking special effects and massive set pieces, but the following two films, Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines in 2003 and
084-88_Select_Sep2015_Editorial 03.indd 85
Terminator Salvation in 2009, didn’t quite live up to fan expectations. So, 31 years after Arnold Schwarzenegger exploded onto our screens in the original film, Terminator Genisys promises to reboot the series, adding new twists to the time-travelling, action-packed storyline, while paying homage to its origins. The film’s plot revolves around the relationship between Sarah Connor, who is destined to bear the child who will become humanity’s saviour, and the terminator who was sent back in time to protect her. With such an iconic character to portray, Emilia Clarke was fully aware of the high expectations people would have, but she didn’t let that intimidate her: “I’ve grown up watching the movies and was always inspired by Linda Hamilton’s role as Sarah Connor,” she says. “So that respect I wanted to pay to it and the inspiration I took from it was already there, but in the fact that our story has given Sarah such a
different backstory, there was room for me to put my own stamp on it as well.” In this version of the story, Clarke plays a Sarah Connor who has been raised and trained by Arnold Schwarzenegger’s terminator since the age of nine, which meant going through rigorous training to get in shape for her role; included kickboxing, gun shooting, military training and weightlifting. She was also put on a strict diet, with no snacks, no dairy,
85
and pretty much “not being allowed to eat anything that might taste good at all”, as the actress puts it. Starring in Game Of Thrones and now Terminator Genisys, Emilia Clarke has come a long way from her childhood days in the quiet English suburbs, where she started acting at the age of three. She often states that she has to pinch herself during moments of reflection, and none more so than when Arnold Schwarzenegger first arrived on set: “He’s such an iconic figure – there were a lot of ‘pinch me’ moments, when you’re like, ‘I can’t believe I’m actually doing this,” she admits. “It’s actually difficult not to just be continually in awe of him when he’s on set.” With Game Of Thrones gaining unprecedented popularity each season, and a who’s who of A-list directors knocking on Clarke’s door, let’s hope the diminutive Brit doesn’t bruise easily, as there are plenty more pinches to come.

A FURIOUS SUCCESS Thirty years after the original Mad Max trilogy, director George Miller shows no sign of ring rust The Mad Max series of films started back in 1979, with the self-titled low-budget original starring a young Mel Gibson as a family man and highway patrol officer called Max. Made in Australia, and set in an ambiguous near future dystopia where the depletion of natural resources has plunged the world into war and chaos, the film tells of Max’s vendetta toward a gang of depraved bikers after they murder his wife and child. The sequel, The Road Warrior, released only two years later, follows Max once again, as he drifts along the same post-apocalyptic highways of the Australian outback, fending off attacks from nomadic tribes of degenerate survivors. In 1985, the third film arrived: Mad Mad: Beyond The Thunderdome. Here Gibson dons Max’s worn leathers for the final time, as he stumbles into an evil, dust bowl community called Bartertown, where he must fight for survival. A thirtyyear Mad Max drought then ensued,
with development problems delaying the long-awaited return of the eponymous leather-clad lone ranger. Finally, against all odds, this summer saw the release of Fury Road, the fourth film in the series, which is a part follow-up, part remake, story in which a grotesque, tyrannical dictator named Immortan Joe is enslaving apocalypse survivors inside a desert fortress called the Citadel. When the rebel warrior Imperator Furiosa (played by Charlize Theron) leads a daring escape, she forms an unlikely alliance with a lone, tortured captive named Max (now played by British actor Tom Hardy). original trilogy’s director, George Miller, still at the helm at the age of 70, and considering the project’s lengthy delays, skeptical critics had their knives sharpened upon its highly anticipated release. But, the veteran Australian director certainly proved them wrong. Fury Road was a triumph, not only did it gain huge numbers at the box office but it also received universal critical acclaim. With its spectacular wasteland chase sequences and relentless, chaotic pace, audiences and critics agreed that it is one of the most staggering and exhilarating theatrical rides in recent years. The drought is finally over.
Disgust Mindy Kaling, of The Mindy Project, voices Disgust, a protective soul who is highly opinionated about everything from what Riley eats, to what she wears. SADNESS Played by Phyllis Smith of the The Office (U.S), Sadness is the voice of reason who is often dragging down Joy when she has an idea.

MAKING IT HERSELF
LIFE AFTER QUEEN After a successful stint as the new Freddie Mercury, Adam Lambert is flying higher than ever The eighth season of American Idol first introduced us to Adam Lambert’s flamboyant, theatrical style, and a voice that most singers could only dream of. Despite coming in second place on the show, it was clear that the Californian showman was destined to be a star. The same year, in 2009, Adam released his debut album, coinciding with an unprecedented debut worldwide tour. In 2012, a second hit album followed, which soon led to history in the making when legendary rock band Queen invited Lambert to join their reunion tour as their honorary front man. His performances were adored by fans across the world – his boundless energy and glam theatrics were a fitting tribute to
084-88_Select_Sep2015_Editorial 03.indd 88
the late, great Freddie Mercury. This year saw Lambert head back to the studio to record his highly anticipated third album The Original High, which was released earlier this summer. “Sonically it feels more contemporary than my previous material. It’s definitely pop but not bubblegum”, the 33 year-old explains. “We have avoided camp and theatrics and have favoured a darker, more grounded vibe, and at the same time it will make you dance! Lyrically, it’s very, very personal too; the album has an overall bittersweet feel to it. Vocally, I think it’s my most tasteful, sophisticated work to date.” The result is a true tour de force. The perfect opener and lead single Ghost Town channels the softer corners
of Lambert’s impressive vocal range over radio friendly deep house beats. The Original High is equally seductive with his striking falsetto set over disco pop instrumentals. Similar to Ghost Town, the track Another Lonely Night starts off slowly but builds up to have anyone moving by the end of it. Another standout track is Lucy; featuring Brian May’s distinctive guitar work, it takes the album into heavier rock territory. Lambert’s powerhouse performance across the album, particularly in his bold ballads, clearly establishes the American Idol alumnus as one of the strongest singers we have today.
With her debut album, Unbreakable Smile, going straight to No. 2 on the Billboard 200, 22-yearold singer-songwriter Tori Kelly has come a long way since posting YouTube videos of cover songs at just 14 years of age. Having appeared in several talent TV shows, including Star Search, American’s Most Talented Kids, and most notably season nine of American Idol, Tori has had tasters of the bright lights since she was a child. But it wasn’t until her first EP in 2012 titled Handmade Songs By Tori Kelly, which she mixed and produced herself, that the California native really started to hit her stride and gain the attention she had long deserved. The following year she was signed to Capitol Records and went on to support Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith on their respective tours before, this year, embarking on her own debut sell out tour. From talent shows to YouTube to cutting her own EP, Tori Kelly is living proof that persistence pays off. Unbreakable Smile is playing on board this month. See page 107 for more details

On the north bank of the Songhua River to the northwest of Harbin lies a sanctuary for Siberian or Amur tigers, one of the world’s most critically endangered animal species. Occupying an area of 1,440,000 square metres, the Siberian Tiger Park is the largest national park in the world for the protection, research and breeding of these white snow tigers, the largest of the tiger sub-species and listed as one of China’s foremost protected animals in the 1980s. The Chinese government established the Chinese Felidae Animal Breeding Centre in Heilongjiang Province in 1986, and later, the Siberian Tiger Park in 1996 to address the dwindling number of tigers in the wild as a result of intense poaching and habitat loss. Today,
the park is home to more than 1,000 tigers, up from only eight cubs when it first started. It expects more than 70 tigers to be born this year and eventually be released into the wild when they reach adulthood. Every year, thousands of tourists from around the world visit the Siberian Tiger Park. Except in the walking area and the platform for viewing the tigers, tourists must watch the magnificent creatures swim, play or run from the safety of buses. Admission into the park costs about USD15.
