Stunning Temples in Thailand With a majority of the population professing the Buddhist faith, it is no wonder that Thailand – the land of smiles – is also the land of temples. There are temples dating back centuries, temples with buildings made of glass or wood, and even a temple that forms a unique art exhibition. Take a virtual walk through some of Thailand’s most beautiful temples that every Buddhist pilgrim or visitor should explore in their lifetime.

harmony, not just within our household but also in our community and the rest of the country. Today, I am proud that the country is thriving and our economy continues to enjoy robust growth. Malaysia Airlines, as the country’s national carrier, has also grown exponentially in tandem with the country and has sealed its status as a national icon that all Malaysians can resonate with. In keeping true to our promise, Malaysia Airlines embraces the modernity of the future Malaysia without forgetting the values of the past, while being progressive, genuine and efficient. In striving to continuously modernise our products and services, Malaysia Airlines has been prioritising its investment in digital advancement over the past year. Our improved website has a ‘Manage Booking' tool which allows for easier changes and refunds, dynamic currency conversion, and a new Enrich members’ portal. We also have a range of valueadded services on the website for our customers, including car rentals, hotel bookings and Takaful insurance. Our in-flight duty-free shopping is also available for orders online. goingplacesmagazine.com | 8 | September 2018
Our digital solutions underline our efforts to deliver the best of Malaysian Hospitality as displayed in our latest brand campaign. Besides offering warm and genuine service, we want our passengers to experience their travel in the most seamless and convenient way. Our studies show a continuous trend of mobile-first in aviation. This means that passengers are self-sufficient and want more control over their travels, where they plan, research and book their trips on mobile devices. This month, we will be the first airline in Asia to allow users to book flights and process payments through Facebook’s Messenger application via the introduction of MHchat. This interactive Facebook Messenger BOT empowers all Malaysia Airlines passengers to make bookings, payments and to retrieve their flight itineraries. Through the integration of AI, the BOT delivers an experience similar to a real customer service agent.

Group Chief Executive Officer Malaysia Airlines Berhad
We will also be rolling out another app this quarter, MHguardian, a mobile application which enables parents or guardians to track unaccompanied minors throughout their travel with Malaysia Airlines. This mobile app was the winning idea of Malaysia Airlines’ 2017 Hackathon. MHguardian will also be extended to support unaccompanied elderly passengers and passengers who require special assistance.
Dear Guests, It is my pleasure to welcome you onboard. In this month of September, Malaysians celebrate the 55th anniversary of the establishment of the Malaysian federation – the joining together of Malaya, North Borneo (now known as Sabah) and Sarawak to form Malaysia. As a young boy in 1963, I don’t remember much about the historical event. However, coming from a household of mixed Chinese-Malay parentage, I learnt to appreciate the importance of preserving racial unity and

I believe we are well on our way to becoming a fully digital airline. A lot has been done since our transformation journey kicked off in 2015 and we will continue to harness innovation and creativity to ensure the best customer experience for all our guests. As always, I wish you a great journey with Malaysia Airlines and a wonderful stay in Malaysia. ■

putting food on their family’s table and enabling them to send their children to school. And that’s badly needed in the world we live in today, where empathy for others appears to be declining. No one wants to be an economic liability; everyone wants to be self-reliant. Causes such as Helping Hands Penan, Gerai OA (a volunteer-run pop-up stall selling crafts made by the indigenous people of Malaysia, the Orang Asli) or Batik Boutique need as much attention as they can get in the media.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 10 | September 2018
In our Explore section this month, two of our stories highlight the selfless efforts of Violette Tan and Amy Blair, driving forces behind Helping Hands Penan and Batik Boutique, respectively. The latter, set up by American expat Blair, equips marginalised women in the greater Kuala Lumpur area with skills to generate sustainable incomes. Their medium is batik, and the ladies have produced an exceptional range of products, from placemats to bangles, that have become fashion hits.
Julie Goh Editor
If you’ve heard of the Brunei-based non-governmental organisation Helping Hands Penan, chances are you’ve been to one of its sales. And that means you have seen the frenzied scramble of shoppers trying to purchase one or five of the handmade bags or baskets woven by a member of the indigenous Penan community. If this happened at a restaurant or any eatery, I’d scoff at it. But in this case, I’d happily jump into the fray because it’s for a good cause. For every bag or basket you buy, you’ll help to empower a member of the community toward economic independence,
Our cover story takes us to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gunung Mulu National Park in Sarawak state. At 544 square kilometres, the primary rainforest is a naturalist’s playground for its diverse range of flora and fauna, limestone pinnacles, extensive cave system, deep gorges and hidden valleys. From Sarawak, we venture to neighbouring Sabah state’s capital of Kota Kinabalu in search of authentic Sabah food. If you have not tried any of the eight listed in our story, such as Tuaran mee, hinava, ambuyat or butod, you need to go back. In conjunction with Malaysia’s celebration of her 55th year of formation on 16 September, our issue this month celebrates the diversity of the nation. And for this reason, we took to the streets to ask ordinary Malaysians what their hopes and dreams are for the country in the coming decades. Turn to pages 46-51 to read what they have to say. Happy Malaysia Day, my fellow Malaysians! ■

Letter Of The Month I have been flying for work every week since December 2015. As a wife and a mother, being away from my husband and four children is tough. On 14 April 2016, I had another child and on 21 July, I flew with my 93-day-old infant. My travels with an infant with Malaysia Airlines have always been comfortable not only due to the helpful cabin service, acceptable meals and great in-flight entertainment, but for the priority boarding, pillows and blankets provided and sometimes, a bassinet seat, which make travelling so much more manageable. I am also very satisfied with the service provided by the ground staff and even the call centre. Furthermore, the 10 percent ticket price for infant is very cheap compared to the service provided. My little princess has flown up to 142 flights in two years, nearly 80 percent of them with Malaysia Airlines. Despite the most tiring yet most satisfying of journeys, I still look forward to coming on board with my no-longer-infant child.

My last trip with Malaysia Airlines was a bit special because I went home for the 14th General Elections in May. Sitting in flight MH1252, I was nervous about the results that will determine the future of the country. The May edition of Going Places reduced some of that nervousness. I found a lot of useful information about destinations that could help me plan my future trips with the airline. I found the British-themed issue very fascinating, especially the marriage of His Royal Highness Prince Harry to Meghan Markle on 19 May. As I read about the preparations for the wedding in Windsor Castle, I couldn’t help but remember my own wedding in December last year at the Royal Kedah Golf Club. All the preparations for the special day, from choosing the venue to sending out invitations to friends and family brought back lovely memories all over again. I have always wanted to visit England, especially the twin towns of Windsor and Eton, visiting Windsor Castle to do the Long Walk, visiting Frogmore House, shopping and eating, and so much more. My journey with my sweetheart is just starting. I hope that we can visit many historical places together in order to learn more about the different people and cultures all over the world. AHMAD FAIZUDDIN, Penang, Malaysia
I flew with Malaysia Airlines for the first time on 13 June 2018. My birthday was the day before and my flight experience made me feel like I had rewarded myself with the best present. Malaysia Airlines provided me with a smooth and unhindered travel experience from the day I booked my ticket to check-in, boarding and on arrival. One thing that really surprised me was Going Places. The content was easily understood, the photos were colourful and the information was up-to-date. I look forward to more wonderful moments with Malaysia Airlines. Keep it up!

Kudos to all at Going Places for the use of environmentallyfriendlier, recycled paper in your magazine. It is great to see Malaysia Airlines placing increased concern for the environment. I also love your crew collecting headphones at the end of each flight for re-use by fellow passengers. As for all the plastic cutlery, here’s hoping that it is all collected for recycling. Malaysia Airlines is a prominent global airline, one I earnestly hope also means Malaysian Hospitality for the environment. MELVIN GUMAL, Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia

You’re in for a shucking good time at the Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival, Ireland’s most popular food festival. Held on 28-30 September every year since 1964, the event draws thousands to this harbour city on Ireland’s west coast to enjoy an endless feast of oysters, seafood and, of course, Guinness. The event kicks off on Friday evening with an opening night featuring a Food Village with local restaurants, followed by the World Oyster Opening Championship and Masquerade Mardi Gras ball on Saturday, while Sunday features the day-long Feile Bia na Mara Wild Atlantic Tastes programme, with cooking demos, family activities, live music, and more.
You won’t find a better tipple in London than at The American Bar at The Savoy Hotel. The iconic bar, which has been around since the 1890s, was recently named the World’s Best Bar 2018 at the 12th annual Tales of the Cocktail event in New Orleans. This year, The American Bar launched a new menu that was inspired by iconic black-and-white portraits that have lined the bar walls, including those of Elizabeth Taylor, David Bowie and Judy Garland. Called ‘Every Moment Tells a Story’, the cocktail menu reinterprets each portrait in drink form, using ingredients such as fermented artichoke, clarified tomato water, jasmine oil and edamame.

Time For Tapas Spanish cuisine continues to flourish in Kuala Lumpur in the form of Tapas Club Malaysia, Pavilion KL’s latest restaurant to satisfy diners’ craving for tapas, paella, churros and more. Tapas Club was originally founded in Singapore by chefs Jose Alonso, who worked with Singapore's Binomio, and Manuel Berganza, who led the crew at New York City's Michelin-starred Andanada. Tapas Club Malaysia is the third outlet in Southeast Asia, following the opening of Jakarta's Setiabudi One outlet in May. Expect all the dishes a Spanish restaurant will offer: five versions of paella, including paella arroz negro (squid ink paella) and paella de chorizo, more than a dozen tapas selections like gambas al ajillo, croquetas and tortilla de patatas, as well as cheeses and cold cuts. Cap the meal off with a selection of churros-based desserts such as the popular churros sandwich with ice cream or stuffed churros with chocolate cream.

Chef Kwon is one of Korea’s most celebrated chefs, and is best known for his modern take on French cuisine served at Lab XXIV in Le Méridien Seoul, which was named one of the world's top 1,000 restaurants on La Liste.

A Decadent Stay London welcomes the stylish L’oscar this month, a luxurious 39-bedroom architectural gem located in the heart of Bloomsbury’s historic Holborn. Converted from a 110-year-old Grade II-listed Baptist church, the superbly restored hotel retains its Baroque features with ornately decorated high ceilings and large windows. The interiors, however, have been given the decadent touches of famed French designer Jacques Garcia, who also renovated the Palace of Versailles in France and revived La Mamounia in Morocco. While each of the guest rooms is unique in shape, size and design, all are richly decorated with silk, velvet and damasks in red and gold tones and the recurring motifs of birds and butterflies – animals being a signature element of Garcia’s designs. The hotel’s restaurant, the Baptist Grill, is located in the former octagonshaped chapel and is helmed by chef Tony Fleming, advocating seasonal British produce. There is also a cocktail bar and a café offering breakfast, bistro-style lunches and shared plates for casual dinners. Spaces for parties, weddings, dinners and private events are available at The Committee Room and The Library and are able to seat up to 25 and 80 people, respectively. loscar.com

Travel back to 19th-century Penang and walk in the shoes of a fabulously rich Chinese tycoon dubbed The Rockefeller of the East at Cheong Fatt Tze - The Blue Mansion. So named thanks to its iconic indigo walls, the former majestic home of the rags-to-riches Hakka merchant who commissioned it for his seventh wife is a rare surviving example of the eclectic architectural style preferred by wealthy Straits Chinese at that time. Built in the 1880s, the mansion was left in disrepair until a team of local conservationists restored it to its former glory in the 1990s, subsequently winning a UNESCO award for heritage conservation. Blending Eastern and Western designs with louvred windows, art nouveau stained glass and beautiful floor tiles, it was turned into a boutique hotel in 2001 to allow guests to better appreciate its intricate qualities.
Blending contemporary elegance, world-class service and a prime location, the Manila Marriott Hotel welcomes discerning guests to the capital of the Philippines. The hotel features 570 luxuriously appointed guest rooms – each furnished with modern comforts – so expect deluxe bedding, large flat-screen TVs, oversized marble bathrooms and exclusive Thann amenities. When it comes to dining, guests will be spoilt for choice, as they tuck into authentic Cantonese fare from Man Ho, succulent grilled beef at the Cru Steakhouse or all-day dining at the Marriott Cafe. Alternatively, escape the bustle of the city at Still, the hotel’s newest bar lounge. Work out at the gym or take a soak at the rooftop pool while enjoying expansive views of the city skyline, before unwinding to a pampering treatment at the Quan Spa. The hotel also offers event spaces, including five ballrooms, 33 smaller meeting rooms and five outdoor venues.

National Flavours September is your last chance to catch Teh Tarik With The Flag, curated by Wei-Ling Gallery, in association with the National Art Gallery and presented by UOB Malaysia. The exhibition sees 14 Malaysian artists explore their flag, also known as the Jalur Gemilang, by extending its symbolism and representing it in fresh and innovative ways. Its simple makeup of stars, stripes and colours belies the flag’s symbolic complexity and the feeling of national unity and pride it stirs in the people of Malaysia. Teh tarik is a popular local drink that also brings together many Malaysians daily. In this way, the exhibition strives to strengthen the bonds among the flag, the people and day-to-day life in Malaysia. The Korean Cultural Centre UK presents Dawns, Mine, Crystal, the first solo exhibition in the U.K. by Yunchul Kim. The South Korean artist combines science and visual effects into his fascinating work, making for educational and innovative pieces of art. The central installation is Cascade, a large-scale piece comprising 18-metre-long interconnected, transparent tubes with liquid continuously flowing through them. In this piece, Kim explores the artistic potential of fluid dynamics and the possibility of controlling the propagation of light through suspended photonic crystals. The rest of the show similarly explores the properties of other materials, cleverly blurring the lines between the realms of science and art.
American artist Polly Apfelbaum will transform a gallery in Birmingham this month into a complex landscape that visitors can walk through. Waiting For The UFOs (A Space Set Between A Landscape And A Bunch Of Flowers) is a mixed-media show of large-scale installations and smaller but no less significant works. Apfelbaum takes the show’s title from two sources: the first part being British singer-songwriter Graham Parker’s 1970s tune Waiting For The UFOs, which depicts eccentric characters awaiting the arrival of extraterrestrials, while drifting across America’s vast landscapes. Surrealist Rene Margritte’s definition of a garden provides the latter half of the title. Playing on these concepts, Apfelbaum strives to create an exhibition that behaves like a landscape to the viewer: as they move through the installation, perspective, light and parallax are constantly changing how they see the work in the space.

The ILHAM Gallery in Kuala Lumpur has been working closely with the Centre Pompidou in Paris to create a cultural dialogue between the two countries and to showcase Malaysian modernist art to a wider audience abroad. As a result of this collaboration, Malaysian artist Latiff Mohidin became the first Southeast Asian artist to have a solo exhibition at the Centre Pompidou with his seminal Pago Pago (1960-1969) series earlier this year. The exhibition has now returned to Kuala Lumpur. During the 1960s, Malaysia, and indeed destinations the world over, were undergoing rapid social and economic transformation and change. The World
Cup goingplacesmagazine.com | 30 | September 2018
The excitement over the recently concluded World Cup proved that football is not only the pre-eminent global sport but also a really bad thing if you’re a Malaysian hoping to get a good night’s sleep. Because of the debilitating time difference, I had previously retired from international football, but once again, I found myself being dragged back in and I stayed up to watch matches that started at 2 am Malaysian time. I love the World Cup because on display are such different nations, faces and attitudes that have absorbed and adapted the seemingly simple game into their own diverse social histories. And I always wonder, why isn’t Malaysia there? After all, the British introduced the game to Malaya/Malaysia at the same time as they did to Brazil, and we have the same weather. But Brazil does have a population of over 200 million, whereas Malaysia is only 30 million. Although it is the same game, there are different reasons why some nations are better at it than others. England (the team that I support) did surprisingly well at the recent World Cup. They reached the semi-final for the first time since 1990 but despite inventing the game and having the richest league, they were beaten by Croatia (population: four million). I asked Croatian exfootballer and now the coach for the Malaysia Under-19 team, Bojan Hodak, why is the tiny nation of Croatia so good at football? He thinks it is because Croatians put a premium on team sports (they’re also world leaders in water polo). Croatia does create some very gifted individual players (Luka Modric was named the best player of the tournament) but each player’s mindset is geared toward successfully integrating themselves into the team. The individual player might have limited talent but by being encouraged to perform to the best of their abilities within and for the team, the entire unit can excel. Can Hodak (who has been living and working in Malaysia since the 1990s)
successfully inculcate a Croatian mindset into his young Malaysian players whose footballing history is more British? In his fascinating book The Italian Job, the gifted Italian ex-footballer Gianluca Vialli offers some reasons why he thinks England is international football’s ultimate failure. Italy did not qualify for this year’s World Cup and England did reach the semi-final, but Italy still has the far more illustrious CV. Vialli, who played in both Italy and England, thinks that one of the reasons England cannot beat more tactically astute opponents is because of the wind. The average temperature in northern Italy and England is much the same but in England there is a constant wind blowing
England has created very few players who can operate in the midfield where great Italians, Germans and Argentinians have successfully weaved their magic. off the Atlantic that makes winters feel colder. During practice sessions, Italian players spend a lot of time standing around discussing tactics with their coaches, but English players do not because they would get too cold. Instead the English players do lots of running and five-asides in order to stay warm in the wind-chill. Because of the wind, Vialli believes, English players do not have the time to learn the subtle intricacies of tactics. Unlike in Italy where all sections of society play the game, British football is a working-class sport (middle-class people play rugby) and
English crowds do not celebrate players for the tactical knowledge or cultural sophistication of an Italian like Andrea Pirlo who comes from a very wealthy family and who owns a vineyard. English crowds want to be entertained with exhibitions of muscular endeavour, grit and determination and fighting working-class spirit. Until the 1980s, most English football pitches were muddy quagmires, where it was virtually impossible to play intricate football because the ball would get stuck in the mud. Instead, it was only possible to execute trickery on the edges of the pitch, where there was still some grass so that rare wizards like Stanley Mathews and later George Best could dribble down the wings before delivering a deft cross. With the wealth of the English Premier League, muddy pitches are now long-gone but something of its memory has lingered for far too long. England has created very few players who can operate in the midfield where great Italians, Germans and Argentinians have successfully weaved their magic. The actual mud has gone, but the mud in the memory remains. What about Malaysia? In 1890, the powerhouse of Kuala Lumpur football was a team called the ‘Asiatics’. The captain was Teck Hock and other players included J. Medina, Visalingam, Swee Seng, G. Rahman and J. Moffatt. They beat everybody despite not being allowed to practise on the padang without a proper permit (which the authorities never gave them). The prestigious centrepiece for football was the Selangor team, which was exclusively for European players. State teams remain to this day the cornerstone of Malaysian football and city teams like the Asiatics died out. A big city like Kuala Lumpur could and should have as many teams as London has. I would like to see new versions of the Asiatics, although I don’t think that name is politically correct these days. And I’d love to see new Teck Hocks. The original Teck Hock was apparently a very good “kicker”. ■

Trivia: Gunung Cheroh was the catalyst for Ipoh’s transformation from a sleepy village into a thriving township. This area was the final navigation point for river travel between towns during Ipoh’s mining heydays. Since the river beyond Gunung Cheroh was too rocky for boats to pass, the journey would stop here, before the supplies were transported by elephant or bullock cart.

How has the business evolved over time?
Previously, we did a lot of project-based accounts. When I joined, I realised that the retail market was untapped and there was a lot of room for growth. The economy wasn’t doing well, and I foresaw that B2B projects would be challenging because of increased competition. Retail was a new channel that could bring in instant revenue whilst offering a more stable projection. I was lucky as my father has always been very supportive and has given me a free hand to try a lot of new things with the business.
China Pottery was founded by my father in 1985 as a distributor of branded, quality tableware products in Malaysia, and later Singapore. We started off with a few brands, namely Noritake, which is one of the world’s leading tableware brands known for their quality porcelain tableware; Srithai Superware, a leading brand in the manufacture of plastic and melamine products in Thailand; as well as Queen Anne, the world-famous silver plated tableware and giftware manufacturer. Today, we carry multiple brands and have a wide distribution network covering both retail and business-to-business (B2B) sectors.
We currently have a nice balance of retail and B2B projects, catering to the hospitality industry from food courts to hotels and restaurants, embassies, airlines and royal palaces. We also do unique bespoke and corporate gifts for our clients, customising according to their budgets and requirements.
Tell us more about your role in the company. How did you get your start in the business?
I am currently executive director, overseeing everything from marketing to finance and operations. My wife helps me a lot on the marketing as well. Believe it or not, I never expected to become involved in the business. I was doing my business degree in university and wanted to gain more experience. After awhile, I found myself spending more time in the office, learning about operations, and meeting customers regularly. You can say that my involvement happened without me even realising it.
Could you tell us more about the brands that you carry?
We carry a variety of tableware products and brands for the mid- to high-end retail segment. Some of the mid-range brands include Superware, Queen Anne, Amefa, Konitz, LAV, Maxim, Equinox, Artemis and Deria, while high-end brands include Noritake and LSA International. Noritake was the first Japanese tableware brand to export Western dinnerware out of its country. It is currently a leading luxury tableware brand in Japan, and is sold in more than 100 countries
worldwide. The brand is well-known for its unique design, high-quality porcelain combined with innovative production technology. Some of the newer brands that we have just brought in include Eisch, IVV, Chinelli silverware and Royal Scot Crystal. Eisch Glaskultur from Germany is one of the world’s leading wine glassware manufacturers. The Eisch family has been tinkering with glass for over 300 years, and are well-known for their artistic and innovative creations. IVV was founded in 1952 by a group of master glassmakers in the heart of Tuscany, Italy. It is now one of Europe’s main producers of blown glass and handmade glass, renowned for its eclectic approach that brings together traditional artisanal techniques and process controls with modern design and classic forms for a powerful emotional and aesthetic appeal. With these brands, we now have complete solutions for tabletops and beyond. How do you decide which brands to bring in?
As someone who is passionate about the industry, there are plenty of brands that I want introduced in Malaysia. However, considering that the local market for houseware is much smaller compared to countries such as Japan, South Korea or the United States, we have to be selective and consider factors like demand, purchasing power, design and price point.

Where are the brands that you carry available for purchase? goingplacesmagazine.com | 36 | September 2018
We mainly distribute our brands in departmental stores such as Robinsons, Metrojaya, Isetan, Parkson, and Sogo in Kuala Lumpur as well as departmental stores in Singapore. We have a Noritake showroom at Bangsar Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur as well as an outlet in Mitsui Outlet Park in Sepang for our discontinued items. How do you determine which designs have priority over others to market?
We work closely with brands to see what’s trending. Noritake, for example, has six to 10 new collections every year. Not all of these are suitable for Malaysia, so we pick and choose according to what’s trending. Sometimes they will even come up with designs to match our requirements. Speaking of trends, what is popular now with tableware?
Simple designs, but there are also clients who prefer classic designs. Some like to use their tableware for daily use, so they go for something minimalist, but at the same time if you buy branded tableware you want it to be seen, recognised and appreciated, so it can’t be too casual. I believe it’s a balance between the classic and the modern, where it’s still luxurious but not too old-fashioned. Premium tableware has often been associated with vintage and nostalgia. What is being done to attract a new generation of younger buyers?
Back in the days, the focus was always on the home, and tableware played a big part in cultivating a sense of house pride. That has changed as most people today spend a lot of time working and travelling. When they do spend, it’s always on lifestyle offerings, food and holidays – tableware is the last thing on their mind. There is a lack of awareness on the beauty and prestige of owning premium tableware. Even among my friends, many of them did not care for

tableware until they knew me and subsequently fell in love with it! Families have also decreased in size, so they no longer have to buy a full set of tableware for big family dinners or occasions. That being said, we have many parents coming into our stores to buy tableware sets, which they plan to hand down to their children, as well as young couples who have received them as heirlooms and are looking to purchase additional pieces to add to the collection. I believe it is important to inculcate an appreciation for it from a young age. It’s something to be proud of, that you hand down through the generations, like a Patek Philippe watch. We are looking to expand brand awareness through social media and influencers. I think
the younger crowd prefers the personal touch, and part of my plan to attract them is to offer customised, bespoke pieces and services such as initial engraving, as we see an increasing number of young people buying our products as gifts. Moving forward, what are plans in the pipeline for the company?
Since we carry quite a number of brands, we are planning to open multi-brand stores where customers will be able to find everything under one roof. It will also allow us to better anticipate their wants and needs. Rather than expanding to the masses by opening a lot of stores, we hope to focus on a niche market by providing better, personalised services and keeping the business exclusive while maintaining a good relationship with our customers and clients. ■

Mulu National Park | EXPLORE
I do not know how anyone could have seen it, but my guides Jenny Malang and Eugene Tony managed to notice a Violin Beetle semicamouflaged against the forested backdrop. Then, after alerting me to the possible presence of snakes, a Bornean Keeled Green Pit Viper appeared almost upon command. Coiled around a post, it was poised to strike unsuspecting prey scurrying past. Tony explained that while large animals live in the rainforest, our chances of seeing any were remote, so it was the small details we would focus on. Named after Mount Mulu, the 544-squarekilometre Gunung Mulu National Park in Sarawak is famous for its subterranean limestone caves. The park is one of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Malaysian Borneo and is recognised and protected for its astonishing limestone formations, including caves and karst topography. Three days is the recommended minimum visit, with day one visiting the Deer and Lang Caves, day two visiting the Clearwater and Wind Caves, and day three, climbing up into the rainforest canopy via a 480-metre-long skywalk. Visitors must travel by a small boat to access some of the caves and to visit the Penan communities adjoining the park. Entry fees are charged, and visitors must engage the services of an experienced park guide to visit the caves.
Forests, Caves & Bats Before Vietnam’s Hang Son Doong Cave was discovered in 1991, Mulu Caves were considered some of the biggest in the world. Deer Cave was then the largest cave passage in the world and Sarawak Chamber, the largest rock chamber. While size may be important for some, visitors to Mulu do not leave disappointed. Mulu is a geological wonderland comprising 60 million year old sandstone rocks and limestone caves. Weathering and erosion are continually sculpting the rugged landscape.

There are many caves in the park but only 50 have been explored, with five main accessible caves – Deer, Lang, Clearwater, Wind, and Lagand. Facilities at park headquarters are comprehensive and include accommodation, toilets, lockers, a convenience store, café and a visitor information centre. The interpretation display is interactive and detailed and provides background information on the park’s features. The three-kilometre-long elevated boardwalk to Deer and Lang Caves weaves its way through lowland mixed dipterocarp forest with pockets of
different types of forests,
including peat swamps, moss forests and stunted upper montage vegetation. n It has thousands
of species of ferns, fungi, mosses and flowering plants, including 170 species of wild orchids and 10 species of pitcher plants.

peat swamp forest as well as the unique forest that thrives on limestone rock. Deer Cave is deceptive; the walk up to the entrance gives little away, and then, the gaping chasm unfolds. The cave is home to millions of bats and swiftlets, and the boardwalk, which extends across the cave floor, is a blessing as the ground is in parts a seething mass of insects feverishly feeding on bat droppings or guano.
after the cool breeze that flows through it, Wind Cave provides welcome relief from the tropical heat. While a river no longer flows through it, there is abundant evidence that one once did. Its Kings Chamber has some of the park’s most amazing stalagmites and columns. Visitors can then walk to Clearwater Cave to admire some of the unique vegetation that grows on limestone cliffs between the two caves. Clearwater is another deceptive cave, and while visitors can grasp the enormity of the space, it is hard to imagine that the limestone passage is some 200 kilometres long. Not surprisingly, clear water flows through it, and many visitors take the opportunity to cool off in the river at the cave’s entrance.

Peaks & Pinnacles
goingplacesmagazine.com | 40 | September 2018
After exploring Deer and Lang Caves, most visitors adjourn to a viewing platform in the hope that bats (over 30 species in all) will emerge from the caves at dusk. This is an amazing sight and while the bats are small, the sheer number of millions of mostly Wrinklelipped Bats flying out of the caves over a few hours has to be seen to be believed. Many of the bats forage over a wide area, including in neighbouring Brunei some 60 kilometres away. It is important to keep an eye on the weather as the bats do not emerge when it is raining or when rain is imminent.
Riverine Caves Clearwater and Wind Caves are accessible via a boat journey along the Melinau River. Named
It is also possible to ascend the peaks of Mount Api (1,750 metres) and Mount Mulu (2,376 metres) but these three-day exercises should only be undertaken by those fit enough for the gruelling challenge and with the aid of an experienced guide. The rigorous climb to Mount Api takes in the famous limestone, Pinnacles. Guided walks across the world’s longest treebased canopy, suspended 20 metres above the ground and a stream, are offered several times daily.

visitors who travel here annually, it is also home to the local community that interacts with the park daily. River-based Orang Ulu (upriver people) of Long Terawan village belong to the Berawan community, while the once-nomadic Penan people live in the Batu Bungan and Long Iman villages. Visitors have access to these villages, and the locals supplement their livelihood by making and selling native handicrafts, showing visitors around their village, and giving them the opportunity to use a blowpipe, their weapon of choice for hunting.
Luxury In The Wilderness
8
The resort is located on the banks of the Melinau River on the boundary with the national park, just a few kilometres from park headquarters. While civilisation appears to be hundreds of kilometres away, the resort has every facility to meet the needs of global travellers. The rooms are luxurious and a most welcome refuge from Mulu’s steamy tropical heat and humidity. There is little to no development in the park, but tourism infrastructure is permitted in the buffer zone with the Mulu Marriott blending into its forested surroundings. Its pool and spa are especially inviting, while the restaurant overlooks the pool and offers an enticing selection of local and Western dishes. â–

Chalet and dormitory accommodation is available in the park, and there are some homestays in the village. However, the finest accommodation is in the 101-room Mulu Marriott Resort and Spa, with five-star facilities to make it an international wilderness retreat. Its rather unique layout is based upon the Sarawakian longhouse with various sections connected by elevated walkways.

As the capital of Sabah state in East Malaysia, Kota Kinabalu, known colloquially as KK, is a popular tourist destination and a gateway for travellers to Sabah and Borneo. The city of half a million people boasts a rich heritage, both historical and cultural. This is reflected in its food, which is as diverse as its people. From fresh seafood and succulent beef noodles to addictive local snacks, here are eight recommended dishes to make a beeline for once you get off the plane and into the city.
2
Tuaran Mee
While appearing deceptively simple, the process requires delicate kneading, which gives the noodles its signature springy texture and distinctively eggy aftertaste. In KK, Seng Hing Coffee Shop is a popular haunt with locals and tourists alike, where the dish is fried and garnished with egg roll slices, char siew (barbecued pork) or seafood and green vegetables. Some Chinese restaurants fry it with a bit of lihing (rice wine) for added flavour, while some serve it dry (konlou).

An iconic noodle dish named after Tuaran, a small town about 30 kilometres from KK, Tuaran Mee is made from a simple combination of eggs and flour.

Sang Nyuk Mee (Pork Noodles) Despite the name, which translates to ‘raw meat noodles’, everything is well cooked in a bowl of sang nyuk mee as the moniker refers more to its quality and freshness. Seasoned with tapioca powder and tenderiser, the meat is smooth with a melt-in-the-mouth texture. There are two ways to enjoy the dish, either with a soup base or served dry. For the latter, the konlou noodles come in a separate bowl, mixed with dark soy sauce and lard, accompanied by tasty pork broth swimming with meat slices, meatballs and pork innards such as liver or kidney. Kadazandusun Delicacies As the largest indigenous group in Sabah, there is a significant population of Kadazandusun in KK, and they bring with them traditional specialities not to be missed. If you like strongtasting dishes, consider trying the local ‘sashimi’ or hinava, made from thinly sliced raw mackerel fish mixed with chilli, ginger, diced red onions, grated wild mango seed, salt and lime juice. Other notable items include bambangan, a

wild mango that is not usually eaten whole but pickled with salt and mixed with chilli, as well as tuhau, wild ginger mixed with chilli and scallion and pickled with salt and vinegar. All three are appetisers or side dishes that can be eaten with Linopot, rice or mashed yam wrapped in leaves. Ngiu Chap Mee (Beef Noodles) Although beef noodles can be found in other places, ask any homesick Sabahans and they’ll agree that ngiu chap mee is something hard-pressed to be found outside the state. Flavourful with a thick consistency, the dish, which translates to ‘mixed beef noodle’ in the Chinese Hakka dialect, is essentially noodles in beef broth, served with beef balls, marinated meat slices, tripe, tendon, tongue and omasum. The best way to enjoy a steaming bowl of this savoury goodness is to eat it with bird’s eye chilli sauce for an extra kick. KAH HIONG NGAU CHAP. Block A Shop, No. 2-0-

Mee Rojak
goingplacesmagazine.com | 44 | September 2018
West Malaysians visiting Sabah for the first time may be in for a surprise when they order rojak, as it is completely different from the version found in Peninsular Malaysia. Instead of the ‘typical’ rojak of cucumber, bean sprouts, bean curd puffs and various chopped fruits, one gets thick and sweet peanut sauce, sliced beef or chicken, and yellow noodles in KK. Mee rojak is available in most Malay coffee shops in and around the city.

Seafood Tom Yam Noodles For those who love seafood and spicy food, Sabah’s seafood tom yam noodles might bring the best of both worlds in a bowl of soupy goodness. While the dish’s origins may be Thai, KK-ites have put their unique spin on it and made it their own. The version here is added with a lot of coconut milk, making it thick and creamy with a bright reddish hue that warns of its spiciness. Thanks to the abundance of seafood in KK, expect gigantic prawns and fresh fish in each serving, and if you’re lucky (depending on the catch of

Ambuyat Made from sago, a starchy substance extracted from the sago palm trunk, ambuyat is widely consumed by the Dusun and Bruneian Malays who live in the southwest of Sabah. During World War II, food was scarce and most people could not afford to buy rice, so sago palm provided an alternative source of carbohydrates, which is why the plant is often referred to as the ‘tree of life’ by locals. Ambuyat is bland, so pair it with savoury dishes such as pinasakan, a Kadazandusun dish of fish, wild mango, turmeric, ginger, lemongrass and chilli.

Take your pick from a rich array of freshly caught seafood, be it fish, squid, tiger prawns, lobsters, crabs, stingray or slipper lobsters, and watch as vendors grill them over a charcoal fire. UFO Tarts & Other Snacks

11
Like the wonderfully diverse people of Sabah, all sorts of colourful and delicious snacks abound in KK, making delightful companions to a steaming hot cup of Tenom coffee or Sabah tea. Look out for UFO tarts, which are pastries with meringue and custard on top of a fluffy vanilla cake base. Originally from Sandakan, a town in the east coast of Sabah, these bite-sized treats – also known as ‘cow dung tarts’ because of their shape – are now a favourite all over the state, including KK. A popular place to get them is at Haijoox on the first floor of Suria Sabah Shopping Mall. Dessert lovers can also indulge in kuih pinjaram, a chewy snack from the Bajau ethnic group, made from rice and wheat flour, or kuih jala, a sweet and crispy triangle or tubeshaped snack of sugar and rice flour. Many of these snacks are available in shops all over KK. HAIJOOX OPEN SHOP 11, First Floor, Suria Sabah

she had a sewing machine, Blair saw a bigger opportunity. “I'd noticed that wherever I travelled in Southeast Asia, there were always really cool gifts to bring home, things that are crafted in a specific country or region. But I always struggled to find those things in Malaysia,” she says. “Which didn't make sense to me because we have the same talented artisans as our neighbouring countries.”
that 99.7 percent of children living there were living in poverty, only half attended pre-school, 15 percent of under-fives were underweight and 22 percent of youth were stunted due to malnutrition.
“Ana was teaching me Bahasa (Malaysia’s national language) to earn some extra income, and as I began to know her language, I started to understand her heart and her struggles as a mother,” recalls the entrepreneur.
“I had recently become a mother myself and Ana's challenges resonated with me,” says Blair with compassion. “I couldn't understand how this woman who lived literally five minutes from my home could have such a different life to me. I knew at that point that, as long as I was living in Malaysia, I wanted to be a part of something to help women and mothers have greater opportunities here.”
The plight of those living in the PPR flats was highlighted earlier this year by a United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) report, which stated
Blair decided that, if she could get Ana to bake or make something to sell to her friends, she could help her financially. But when Ana said
Blair's idea was to reimagine Malaysia's batik industry as a contemporary fashion house and lifestyle brand and create a social enterprise by training and empowering a workforce of marginalised women, like Ana. She started by establishing a sewing centre. “We surveyed women from Ana's community and we asked them what they needed. They all needed money, that's a given, but the barriers they identified as stopping them reaching their financial goals were primarily childcare and transportation,” she explains. “So we started a sewing training centre within walking distance from the flats.” The profits of Blair's business

Amy Blair says helping others is in her DNA; it's something she was taught from a young age, growing up in Texas in the United States. Which is why, nine years ago, when she met Ana, a single mother living in the Kota Damansara People's Housing Project (PPR) flats near Kuala Lumpur, she felt compelled to not only change Ana's life but to change the lives of women like her.

on Malaysia's east coast, another way Batik Boutique is creating opportunity for those who need it most.
“Anyone who finishes our sewing training programme can start working and earning money with us immediately. We pay 40 percent higher than minimum wage and provide childcare stipends for women working more than 20 hours per week,” Blair says proudly. “We also provide dental care for some of our workers, additional training in other aspects of business, English-language lessons and whatever else they need.”
“Batik isn't an industry which has innovated or modernised well and it's difficult to encourage younger generations to stay within these family businesses when, often, they're not making much money. By supporting existing, local businesses with orders and helping them to modernise, we're helping to keep this cultural heritage continuing,” Blair explains.
“We start with the economic stress because when you relieve that burden, people can start to think longer term and that's when you can create sustainable change. By eliminating the struggle of childcare and allowing these women to work fewer hours for a better wage, we create real social impact,” she adds. To date, more than 200 women have been trained by Batik Boutique in the Kota Damansara sewing centre and beyond, including women affected by flooding in eastern Kelantan state and those living in remote parts of Malaysia such as Pulau Sibu. The batik they work with is handdyed and block-printed by family businesses
Sept 2018_Explore Batik Boutique03.indd 54
In fact, Batik Boutique orders have been some of the biggest these family businesses have ever fulfilled and their work is regularly shipped globally. Printing batik for a modern, global fashion industry means simplifying the prints and muting the colours, and Blair and her team can also customise colours and prints and add logos and labels for corporate clients. “We use only original batik printing blocks for all of our designs because we want to remain true to Malaysian batik. We just tone down the colours and the layering to appeal to a wider market,” she says. Batik Boutique's inaugural retail outlet, which opened in December 2017, is located below its office and creative space in Desa Sri Hartamas,

where customers can sign up to learn the process of making their own batik in a handson workshop. The fashion line is chic and refined, retailing leather clutch bags with batik highlights, lightweight silk kaftans, pretty shift dresses and elegant soft furnishings. Colours are muted pastels and earthy tones. Blair hopes the store will be the first of many outlets to bring the product to the public. “I'd love to eventually have our stores in airports and downtown in the shopping district. The longterm dream is to create an experiential space for batik tourism where you can see batik being made, try some of our workshops and buy our line of clothing, gifts and accessories,” she says. It's a big ambition but, for Blair, the real triumph of her business is the impact it has had on the people who have sewn it all together. “The women who come to us come with no skill sets at all, often they've never worked before. We had one girl who couldn't read or write. She was a single mom of three kids and within a few months, she's working, she's providing for

We trained her, gave her a job and sorted out dental care for her family. Now she's supporting her family, they're eating better, they bought a car and she has ambitions of opening her own clothing store someday,” she adds. Just as helping others is part of Blair's DNA, Blair says it's also in the DNA of her business. “We're proud to support the individual dreams and ambitions of the women who take part in our programme, because that's the point of it all,” she says, “Batik Boutique is built on those dreams and ambitions and we don't ever forget that.” ■ About the writer Sharon Crowther is a Scottish travel writer currently living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. "I decided this year that I need to do a little bit less. But even my doing less is too much," laughed Khoo in a Skype interview from somewhere in the Swedish countryside. It was eight in the morning there and already she was sounding bright and chirpy, fielding questions to promote the cookbook, The Little Swedish Kitchen.
She talked about her new life in Sweden (where she now lives with her family), a foreign country with which she needs to familiarise herself again. "The way I usually integrate into a culture is through the food. It's a good way of learning about the culture and learning the language," said Khoo. It's not unusual that food would be an important connection to her new abode. After all, she became famous as the winsome English girl turning out classic French dishes with her own fresh approach from a tiny Parisian kitchen. Naturally, she has turned her experiences with Swedish cuisine into a cookbook, divided into the four seasons and peppered with personal anecdotes. "Some people would go, ‘Oh, but this is the traditional way of doing it, you can't change it.’ And I go, ‘But why not try?’ It's not always successful but you never know. I'm always open to trying new things out." For example, with the classic Beef Bourguignon from her Parisian days, Khoo gave it her personal twist by adding baguette dumplings. In her new cookbook, she gives the recipe for vegetarian Swedish meatballs; it was at the insistence of her husband that she included the meat version as well. This playfulness with flavours is probably a product of her mixed cultural upbringing. Born in south London to a Malaysian father and an Austrian mother, she had a jumble of culinary influences for her family’s dining table. "I grew up with rendang and chicken porridge, and we always had Sunday roast at home as well as schnitzel and fries. There would be a lot of flavours involved. I always say it was like having the United Nations on the table." A graduate of Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design, Khoo embarked on her working life as a fashion PR and marketing rep in London. In a mid-career reflection, she decided to pursue her dream of going to Le Cordon Bleu in Paris for a pastry diploma. "I was only intending to do it for a year, and if it didn't work out, I'd just go back to London and get a job." That was almost eight years ago, and Khoo hasn't had to resort to her fallback plan.

Rachel Khoo has had a busy year. She usually has a full plate, but this past year has been especially eventful for the British cook, social media star and television personality. She renovated a new studio for her online lifestyle magazine Khoollect, wrote a new cookbook, and oh, she had a baby. If there's anything that we can say about Khoo, it's that life does not sit still with her.
This is thanks to her indefatigable enthusiasm and go-getting attitude. Success did not come to Khoo on a silver platter. In Paris, she worked as

an au pair while attending school and struggling with loneliness and the French language. She then worked at the delightful La Cocotte, a culinary bookstore and tea salon, where she was meeting authors, catering for book launches and hosting cooking classes. Meanwhile, she was hosting private dinners at her tiny Parisian apartment. "I was out hustling, approaching people instead of waiting for people to come to me. I was knocking on doors," she said. Her time at La Cocotte resulted in two cookbooks in French. With that, Khoo coldcalled publishers and presented them with a PDF layout full of ideas for an English-language cookbook. Her first, The Little Paris Kitchen, was published by Penguin. She now has six cookbooks to her name.
goingplacesmagazine.com | 58 | September 2018
But what really launched Khoo into food stardom was her BBC2 hit The Little Paris Kitchen, which aired in 2012. Again, it was she who approached the production houses. The appeal was her wide-eyed ingenuousness, packaged in bright lipsticks and whimsical full-skirted dresses. She made cooking seem casual and fun without getting caught up in culinary perfectionism. Khoo cooks like we do. She dusts her clothes with flour, gets on her hands and knees to plug in the blender, and almost forgets about ingredients in the flurry of cooking. Since the success of The Little Paris Kitchen, more shows have followed, including co-hosting Australia's Just Desserts. In one episode of A Cook Abroad, she goes food hunting in her father's home country, Malaysia. "You can't sit on your hands. Nothing comes from nothing. One of my pet hates is people telling me that I'm an overnight success or that I was so lucky. I was very fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time and meeting with the right people but most of it came from sheer hard work and determination," she said. Away from the cameras, Khoo maintains an active social media presence and updates her Instagram account with bright and cheerful images of food and daily life. She is also the founder and editor-in-chief of Khoollect, which dispenses curated dining, travel, fashion and beauty news. "We are at an age where we have the tools. You can create your own small community yourself. It is a lot of hard work and you won't get rich quick, but you can do it if you are passionate about it," she advised. Our time is almost up and as we are winding down, I ask if there's a possibility of a little Malaysian cookbook. "That is something that I would love to do. I love the diversity of food there," Khoo enthused. "For me, food is a lot about sharing and that's what I love about visiting relatives in Malaysia and Singapore. It's all about sharing dishes." â–

Cook Like A Chef
Khoo shares her recipe for Chilled Cucumber Soup with Beetroot Yoghurt Granita, above. (Serves 4) Ingredients: n 2 cooked beetroots (about 125g) n 125g plain yoghurt n 900g cucumber, chopped n 4 tbsp chopped fresh dill, plus a few
sprigs to garnish
n 4 tbsp cider vinegar n sea salt n 1 beetroot, peeled, to garnish
Method: 1. Start by making a granita. Blitz the cooked beetroot with the yoghurt in a blender. 2. Pour into a large, flat-
bottomed container and place in the freezer. After 30 minutes, thoroughly stir
through the mixture. Place back in the freezer for another 2-3 hours, or until fully frozen. 3. Blitz the cucumber and dill in a blender until very smooth. 4. Add the vinegar and season
to taste with salt. Place in the fridge to chill. 5. When ready to serve, julienne the remaining beetroot into thin strips. 6. Use a fork to scratch the granita up into snow. 7. Check the soup for seasoning, then divide it into bowls. 8. Top with the granita, some beetroot matchsticks and sprigs of dill.

Weaving
A Future
From farm basket to fashion hit. Words Carolyn Hong | Photography SooPhye
goingplacesmagazine.com | 60 | September 2018
If one isn’t planning to shop for a Penan bag, it would be best to stand to one side when the sales begin, for eager customers will make a beeline for their picks with a steely determination. The rainbow array of bags is irresistible, and many people end up walking away with half a dozen bags or more, dangling on their arms. These cheerful bags, made of plastic packing straps, have become an unexpected big city fashion hit. The bags are woven by women from the indigenous communities of Malaysia’s eastern Sarawak state, primarily the Penan community, which was once nomadic but has mostly settled in villages in remote areas. Living far from town, they are often economically marginalised, and their lives are made more difficult by the loss of forest resources.
The community is known for its expert weaving skills with rattan. But as these jungle vines become increasingly scarce, some have begun to make farm baskets from plastic packing straps sold in hardware stores normally used for tying boxes for transportation. The plastic straps have the advantage of being durable, and the bonus of being colourful. Their earliest carriers, made for farm and domestic use, would not have passed muster with the fashionistas. But one organisation spotted the potential almost 10 years ago. Based in Brunei and Miri, Helping Hands Penan is a registered non-profit non-governmental organisation with a fluid membership of around 30 Malaysian and expatriate volunteers. Like many ventures, it began with a casual conversation. That led to a mission to assist indigenous families, who had to travel far from

their villages to town to care for ailing relatives in the hospital. Helping Hands Penan director Violette Tan said they initially sought to help these families by selling their rattan crafts for income but the supply could not keep pace with the demand. They then spied an opportunity with bulky baskets made from plastic packing straps. The Helping Hands Penan women worked with the Penan rattan weavers to redesign these squat baskets into sleek bags with shoulder straps, suited for contemporary urban use. They suggested sizes and shapes suitable for children and adults, and offered ideas on household items used in the cities such as placemats or cutlery holders. They also encouraged the weavers to switch from a riot of primary colours to a more contemporary colour palette of pastel hues and mono-colours. On their part, the weavers incorporated their traditional motifs into the

bags, thus keeping alive their heritage even as they invent new patterns. “Many of the motifs come from the older weavers skilled in rattan craft, said Violette. That was a decade ago. Today, many of the weavers have gained a sense of independence as they learn to manage this venture as a business. They source for their own material, come up with new designs, and some also sell in various markets as independent enterprises. In the beginning, Helping Hands Penan sold the bags in private sales among the expatriate community. Today, the bags can be found at pop-up fairs around Malaysia, and as far as Europe and Australia, through a network of volunteers and resellers. Helping Hands Penan is still run by volunteers, who collect the bags, store, tag and transport them for sale. The sales are manned by volunteers, who also make regular trips

to the remote villages. Weavers are paid upfront for their bags at prices that they set themselves. Profits from the sales are returned to their community in the form of education, infrastructure and welfare programmes. Violette said education is their biggest focus because the children face tremendous challenges in getting to school. It now assists 150 students, from primary to tertiary level, with school supplies, living expenses, transport costs and pocket money, and also helps them to apply for higher education. Bag sales also help fund basic amenities such as clean water supply and solar lights, health and welfare needs, and in cases of emergencies such as deaths or fires. The most recent project is helping to build a homestay for tourists and visitors, with the hope that this can be a source of income for the community. An upcoming project is a piped water system for a village.

Tan works behind the scenes to identify the needs of the villagers. He provides the manpower and does the heavy lifting, literally. He transports the children between their village and boarding school in town, sources and distributes the solar lights, and even works with the villagers to install water pipes. He does the groundwork, without which the Helping Hands Penan programmes would be challenging. Tan, a portrait artist of breathtaking talent, became part of Helping Hands Penan in 2009 after meeting Violette at his art exhibition in Brunei. He paints exclusively the indigenous community of Sarawak, focusing largely on the Penan as he seeks to discover the stories of his homeland. Through his art, he has become friends with the people of the upper reaches of the Baram river in Sarawak. Like many, he was moved by the need that he saw. Tan works with different groups to assist the community, and Helping Hands Penan is one of them. To Tan, it was a way of fulfilling

his obligations to the communities who had generously given him their time and agreed to be a part of his art. “When I visited them, I saw a high level of poverty and a low level of education. But things are changing as some now have jobs, and have bought motorbikes and cars,” said Tan. It means that more people are now able to send their children to school. Many of these changes have come about from greater economic and job opportunities. Helping Hands Penan seeks to encourage and support them through additional financial help. “The Helping Hands Penan ladies are very dedicated!” said Tan. Who would have thought that a simple tote bag, made from material found in a hardware store, could become a fashion hit and change the lives of so many! ■

Inovasi Kuih Bulan Kreativiti dan inovasi kuih bulan tradisional masyarakat Cina kini tanpa had. Teks Alexandra Wong | Terjemahan Yeo Li Shian | Foto SooPhye
Mid-Autumn Marvels. Innovative mooncake-makers give this iconic Chinese pastry imaginative twists.
Popularly linked to the legend of Chang’e, the beautiful goddess of immortality who resides on the moon, on this day families get together and children parade their colourful lanterns or light the ground with candles, mirroring the stars above as a full moon illuminates the night sky. And of course, no Mid-Autumn Festival would be complete without the tradition of consuming that salty-sweet, sticky, oh-so-decadent pastry known as mooncake. A majority of mooncakes purchased are also gifted to family, friends, and business associates as a way to nurture guanxi (social capital). Traditionally, mooncakes comprise goldenbrown buttery pastry encasing a heavy, sticky filling made from lotus seeds (lin yong), red beans (hung tao) or green beans (cheng tao), with a whole egg yolk embedded in the middle. In some communities, traditional versions contain four egg yolks, representing the four phases of the moon. Unsurprisingly, mooncakes are also calorie bombs - a single mooncake may contain upward of 800 calories!

Other than the Lunar New Year, the most eagerly anticipated festival for the Chinese must be the Mid-Autumn Festival, a thanksgiving celebration that falls in September.

Selain Tahun Baru Cina, kehadiran Perayaan Kuih Bulan sering dinanti-nantikan. Disambut pada bulan September, hari kesyukuran bagi masyarakat Cina ini cukup terkenal dengan legenda kejelitaan abadi dewi Chang’e yang menetap di bulan.
As people become more conscious of the health risks associated with sweet and fatty food, mooncake makers began evolving toward healthier options. Inspired by Japanese mochi and banh deo (Vietnamese mooncake), Hong Kong bakery Taipan came up with the snow skin mooncake in 1989. Enveloped by a delicate ‘snow skin’ made from edible glutinous rice, this mooncake is not baked and is significantly lower in calories. What started out as a fad has only grown in popularity, for both healthy and practical reasons. “The advantage of snow skin mooncakes is that they’re not baked,” explains Executive Chinese Chef Lam Hock Hin of Hilton Kuala Lumpur. “Since the ingredients won’t melt, chefs can innovate an incredible variety of flavours and ingredients while preserving its look. Your imagination is your limit.”

It is now customary for hotels to outdo each other in the creative stakes by introducing ever more imaginative snow skin mooncake flavours every year. For 2018, Chef Lam has come up with Dragon Blossom, which marries the robust flavours of red dragon fruit and pineapple with a buttery macadamia nut “yolk” for a taste that’s both tropical and decadent. Making this a must-buy, the hotel collaborated with Malaysian fashion designer Khoon Hooi – renowned for his Chinoiserie style - to come up with a stunning embroidered brocade satchel-shaped box that’s a collector’s item on its own merit. Another popular trend is filling snow skin mooncakes with ice cream as the soft, springy snow skin contrasts well with the icy filling. While ice cream mooncakes are no longer a novelty, Malaysian artisanal ice cream maker Inside Scoop stands out for its whimsical combinations of local flavours and ingredients. Themed ‘Over The Moon’, their menu for 2018 features classical flavours such as mint chocolate chip, vanilla bean, and dark chocolate brownies, as well as localised pairings such as durian ice cream with chocolate ganache yolk,

keputusan komersial semata-mata. The motivation for incorporating mooncakes into Inside Scoop’s menu goes beyond commercial. Inside Scoop co-founder Edmund Tan’s birthday falls on the same month as the Mid-Autumn Festival, so his parents sometimes used mooncakes as his birthday cake. Following in their footsteps, his wife-cum-co-founder Shiew Li used to buy him ice cream mooncakes as a birthday cake. Naturally, when they created their ice cream company, it was a matter of time before the ice cream mooncake was born. “It was the perfect excuse to fuse my favourite dessert with tradition. Mooncakes remind me of happy memories, not just another celebration.”

The Man Behind The Scenes
Tun Dato’ Haji Omar Ong Yoke Lin was a diplomat, politician and businessman. Successful in all three fields, he often played crucial behind-the-scenes roles when Malaysia was still a fledgling nation finding its footing in the wider world. Words Siva Sithraputhran | Photography Arkib Negara Malaysia
It was no small feat for the fledgling nation. After all, here was a type of meeting usually reserved for heads of state. "It was unheard of for a minister of any government, and a small and developing one at that, to meet the U.S. president,” former Health Minister Tan Sri Chong Hon Nyan told the New Sunday Times in a December 2006 report. That event says volumes about Tun Omar's diplomatic skills, he added. Thankfully for Malaysia, the price of rubber began to stabilise soon after, averting economic disaster. Throughout his career, Tun Omar was a man who worked mainly behind the scenes. As ambassador to the U.S. and as Malaysia's permanent representative to the United Nations, his quiet diplomacy and ability to influence opinion came into full play. When Malaysia came into existence in 1963, incorporating into one nation peninsular Malaysia, Singapore as well as Sabah and Sarawak on the island of Borneo, opposition from neighbouring Indonesia and the Philippines was swift. Tun Omar's skills and efforts were crucial in easing regional tensions and helping the country find recognition. His diplomatic career started in 1962 and lasted until 1972 with postings as ambassador to the U.S. and Brazil, high commissioner to Canada and permanent representative to the U.N.

The 1960s were a difficult time for newly formed Malaysia. The price of rubber, the country's major export and foreign exchange earner, was falling and starting to hurt its economy. Tun Omar Ong Yoke Lin, at the time Malaysia's ambassador to the United States, acted decisively. Using all his influence, he sought and secured a meeting between Malaysia's then finance minister Tun Tan Siew Sin and Lyndon B. Johnson, the President of the U.S., a country that had amassed a large stockpile of rubber after World War 2.
Ong (back row, centre) and members of the Malaysian Cabinet in 1959
Born in Kuala Lumpur in July 1917, Tun Omar was educated at Victoria Institution, a leading school in the country at the time. He became an air-conditioner salesman and started his own business, but also trained as an accountant. He later embraced Islam. For him, politics came early. He was one of the founding members of the Malaysian Chinese Association in 1949. Later, he became a key cog in forging an alliance between his party and the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), the dominant party in the coalition that governed Malaysia from independence in 1957 to mid-2018. When colonial Malaya held its first general election in 1955 as a precursor to self-rule, Tun Omar won the Kuala Lumpur West seat with a comfortable majority and was appointed Malaya’s first Post and Telecoms Minister. He also played a supporting role in negotiations for independence from colonial Britain, being part of a delegation that went to London in April 1957.
When Malaya, as it was called then, became independent in August of that year, Tun Omar served as the Minister of Labour and Social Welfare. In 1959, Tun Omar was appointed Health and Social Welfare Minister. After the sparkling diplomatic career that followed, he returned to Malaysia. From 1973 to 1980, Tun Omar served as the president of Dewan Negara, the upper house of parliament, later returning to his successful air-conditioning business, which continues to run today. Tun Omar passed away in July 2010 due to agerelated reasons. Writing in his blog in 2010, Malaysia’s current Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad painted a picture of a quiet, determined man. “He was one of those architects of our country, one who made possible the close cooperation between MCA (The Malaysian Chinese Association) and UMNO, between Chinese and Malays,” he said. ■

Goodbye, Wrinkles
Overnight Glow
The Face Inc’s Eye Serum is formulated to repair delicate skin around the eye region by reducing the appearance of fine lines as well as the depth and volume of wrinkles. The serum contains ingredients such as Jojoba seed oil, Argireline and potent peptides that increase the skin’s elasticity, while preventing the breakdown of collagen to ensure that skin around the eyes stays supple and bouncy. The serum absorbs into the skin quickly, leaving no tackiness behind after application. Perfect for those who prefer an eye cream of a lighter consistency.
Rejuvenate your skin as you sleep the night away with Organique’s Precious Age-Reverse Overnight Sleeping Mask. The mask is rich in Australian wild rosella flower extract and shea butter, containing healing properties that will gradually reverse damage on the skin. It has also been proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, leaving the skin feeling deeply moisturised and glowing the next day.

SAFETY + SERVICE INFO
CABIN LUGGAGE HANDLING Passenger and crew safety onboard our flights is our highest priority. In compliance with the airline’s policy and in observing Occupational, Safety and Health Regulations requirements, cabin crew are no longer required to stow passengers’ hand luggages into the overhead stowage compartment. This is to minimise occupational hazard and ergonomic risks faced by cabin crew in the aircraft. Cabin crew on duty will, however, assist passengers travelling with infants, young passengers travelling alone, the elderly, and passengers with reduced mobility. Passengers who are fit and in good health must carry, stow and secure their own hand luggages on board. Hand luggage exceeding the 7kg weight limit is required to be checked in before boarding.
PORTABLE ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PED) For safety reasons and in line with the Department of Civil Aviation guidelines, mobile phones and all PEDs must be switched off once aircraft doors are closed. Whilst cruising, devices placed in flight mode may be used. The devices must again be switched off during the approach for landing until the aircraft is parked at the terminal building. Devices transmitting strong signals must remain switched off throughout the flight, until disembarkation. The Captain may prohibit the use of devices that can interfere with the aircraft’s system.
LITHIUM BATTERIES Lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries for portable electronic devices (PEDs), including medical devices must not exceed 2g for lithium metal batteries and 100Wh for lithium ion batteries. All spare batteries, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for PEDs must be carried in passengers’ carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. For PEDs containing non-spillable batteries, they must be 12V or less or 100Wh or less. A maximum of two spare batteries may be carried. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.
ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES Electronic cigarettes must be carried on one’s person or in carry-on baggage only. Recharging of the device in-flight is not permitted.
ZERO TOLERANCE OF ABUSE We value courteousness. Any form of threat, verbal abuse or violence towards our staff will be taken seriously. We are committed to supporting anyone who has been the victim of an assault.

Malaysian indie electronic duo PASTEL LITE's debut album Balada is playing onboard this month. We catch up with band members Eff Hakim and Mohd Faliq on what to expect and the inspiration behind the album.
Tell us more about how you got involved in music.
We’ve always been into making music ever since we could remember. While we didn’t get a formal music education, we did go to audio school, where we learned the basics of audio production, music theories and such. We went on to record our own music and this gave us room to experiment with our sound, which in turn led to a lot of learning and practising, which is always good for any band. How did Pastel Lite come about? goingplacesmagazine.com | 92 | September 2018
An online friend introduced us. At that time, Faliq, our multiinstrumental, was looking for talents to work with for a project, while Eff, the vocalist, had just posted a bunch of her demos online. We met up in real life, started working together to make music, and there was just this really good chemistry between us. After we released our first song online, we were invited to play at a festival in Singapore. Surely it’s too late to change our minds now, we thought, so we stuck to the band thing and called ourselves Pastel Lite to reflect the vibe of our first song, which was minimal electronic pop music. Your latest album, Balada, has a strong 80s feel and theme to it. Could you tell us why?
We were opting for a late 70s and early 80s vibe, which we think is the era where band pop music was at its peak. Why we resonated so much with that decade during the making of Balada has a lot to do with wanting to pay tribute to Eff’s late father, who grew up in that era, (and) our newfound appreciation for international classic bands like ABBA, The Carpenters, Bee Gees, Todd Rundgren as well as local legends such as Alleycats, Uji
Rashid, Sudirman, Kenny Remy Martin and Francissca Peter. To be perfectly honest, however, we never truly planned to have this specific sound in this album; it just happened. Once the theme became apparent, we just went with the flow. It helped that prior to our album, we went through a ‘new wave’ phase. It’s nice to go back to the classics for a change, and we guess it showed in the album. Where do you draw inspiration from for your music and lyrics?
Anything, really! We understand it’s a cliché answer a lot of musicians like to give, but it’s true. During the making of our album, we were inspired by so many things: the death of a loved one, adulthood, unrequited love, graduation, financial issues, friendship, cats, the end of the world, the concept of fame, arguments, our local indie music industry.

What is the most memorable or exciting experience that playing as a band has taken you to?
If we were to pick one, it’d be the 2015 Laneway Festival in Singapore. It was one of those events where we were literally surrounded by all of our favourite bands and musicians like Little Dragon, St Vincent and Mac DeMarco, just to name a few. It was so surreal; it felt like a dream to see your heroes in person. What’s next for Pastel Lite?
We’re working on a few songs. Well, we’re always working on a few songs! Fingers crossed that we’ll be able to release some new music sooner rather than later.
Everything Is Love – THE CARTERS Plans to record a joint album by Beyoncé and Jay-Z have finally come into fruition in the form of this rap and hip-hop focused record. Everything Is Love is the final album in a trilogy documenting the couple’s married life after Beyoncé’s explosive revelation of her husband’s infidelity on Lemonade and Jay-Z’s repentance on 4:44. The album marks the pair’s first full-length collaboration but hopefully not the last.
