COVER BY BOA MISTURA Boa Mistura were born in Madrid in the early 2000s. This group of friends, who met while painting graffiti on the walls of their neighborhood, has become a leading artist collective in the street art scene worldwide. Based in the capital of Spain, this multidisciplinary team works mostly in the public space, and has developed projects in South Africa, Brazil, United States, United Kingdom, Mexico, Norway and Panama among other countries. “Boa Mistura” is Portuguese for “good mixture”, and refers to the diversity of style and perspectives inherent to each member of the group. They understand their work as a tool to transform the streets and to strengthen bonds among people. Furthermore, they strive to fulfill their responsibility towards the city through their passion for what they do.
Their work has been exhibited in the 13th Venice Architecture Biennale, the Bienal del Sur in Panama, the Reina Sofía Museum, Casa Encendida, DA2 Museum and CAC Málaga. In addition, they have collaborated with national and international non-profit organizations (ONCE National Organization of Spanish blind people, Oxfam, Intermon, Amnesty International) and they have given lectures in universities on the topic of art and social transformation. Boa Mistura’s proposal for SPAIN arts & culture cover refers to the feeling of passion for what they do, for color and for life. The hand represents the strength and the workforce of the people, as well the power of creation: everything comes out from your hand, and all the dreams are within your reach. www.boamistura.com
If one feature distinguishes the European experience from all others, this would definitely be the unique dynamism of its urban life. The Greek and Roman legacy is still very much alive across the continent, especially in the plazas and markets of Mediterranean cities. The creative power of the city and its extraordinary capacity to constantly generate new cultural expressions will be the recurring theme of our Spring/Summer season. Starting with the vibrant cover by street art collective Boa Mistura, this catalogue is packed with fresh proposals that look at the urban scene from a variety of perspectives. Transforming Cityscapes, a fascinating show on how architects and urban planners are reinventing the Iberoamerican city landscape, will open at the Art Museum of the Americas, AMA in Washington, just days after the inauguration of TAPAS Spanish Design for Food, our spectacular exhibition on design applied to gastronomy. In the meantime, SPAIN arts & culture is deeply involved in Transit, a collective project on urban renewal, managed by the city of Baltimore and EUNIC (European Union of National Institutes for Culture). The screening of Hic et Nunc at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum will showcase the most recent political video art from the streets of Spain, while the latest Spanish indie bands will tour the US on the wake of the South by Southwest Festival. Literature, theater, film, fashion, visual arts and much more will complete a fully loaded program designed with passion and love for your enjoyment both in the US and Canada.

El Último Grito expand upon their approach to design and architecture in which they rely on their hands, bodies, and inexpensive materials to “free” themselves from traditional methods of production. Over the course of a few days, Grito and a team of volunteers covered a lanky, snaking plywood armature in bubble wrap and secured it with packing tape to make an organic, lumpy shape that sprouted legs and a mushroom-like spine. Covered with a decorative “skin” of bright orange and black stickers designed by Grito, the final installation is a wildly patterned, eccentric form existing as functional public seating, contemporary sculpture, and graphic design.

Curated by designer/architect Juli Capella, and organized by Acción Cultural Española (AC/E), TAPAS showcases imagination and talent targeting the taste buds, where design and haute cuisine go hand in hand. The exhibition is divided in three sections: the kitchen, about preparation and utensils; the table, for objects used to sample food; and the meal, on food design, where Spanish chefs, designers, architects, wineries and restaurants reflect upon the last 25 years of Spain’s avant-garde experimental blending of design and food. Tapas is a festival of shapes and materials in the most diverse styles, nourished from a rich store of ingenuity, experimentation and sensuality.

#Urbanistas Spanish Street Art Becoming Public Art
Mario Suárez Journalist and art curator, who has worked for several magazines and papers of art and culture such as El País, GQ Magazine, Esquire… He is the author of several books about street art and illustration.
In May 2008 something or possibly everything changed in the street art world. The Tate Modern in London put on the first major exhibition of a movement, which emerged in the 1960s in the United States. ‘Street Art’ was the name of this controversial show where six international artists painted the walls of the museum. Among them was a Spaniard, Sixeart, today known as Sixe Paredes. The exhibition placed urban artists in a different context and enabled young audiences to understand that the visual language of the street also had institutional support. The Spanish presence was significant, and the exhibition was accompanied by a series of art interventions completed by Spanish artists in the neighborhood around the Tate Modern. As Spanish street art went around the world, these artists became more in demand and their work became more photographically reproduced. Two decades earlier, a movement of graffiti and urban art had arisen in Spain that was unique in the world. By the mid-1980s, when democracy in this country was still a baby, a pictorial energy emerged in the streets of Madrid and spread throughout the world. It was the ‘Indigenous Madrid Graffiti’ also known as ‘Los Flecheros’ (The archers), formed by a number of artists who signed their graffiti with an arrow, and they were associated in the popular mind with the boom of punk music which was happening in Spain. The most representative of this trend was the graffiti artist Muelle, a young boy whose face nobody had

seen, but who received pages and pages of coverage in the newspapers. A documentary film for national TV was even made about his life. Muelle was considered the first great Spanish graffiti artist, the forerunner of today’s urban art. Muelle shared the European scene in the eighties with other big names like the French artist Blek Le Rat.
In the decade of the nineties, graffiti in Spain had a low presence because of restricting laws, but in the decade beginning in 2000, different crews and artists with important international standing began to appear. One of these pioneering artists who made the move outside of Spain was Suso33, a classic image maker who spent his first years as a graffiti artist with the mythical names from the ending of the eighties. Today he is a veteran creator who works not only on walls, but also with painting and video art, examples of which are in the collection of the Reina Sofia museum.
14
Along with Suso33, other Spanish urban artists began to emerge and they were engaged in a natural evolution towards street intervention.
This group created a more aesthetic and conceptual form of art. The artists were Eltono, a french artist living in Spain, Nano 4814, Spok, 3TTMan, SpY, Borondo, SrX, Remed, Okuda, Sixe Paredes, Uriginal, Btoy, Aryz... Artists who today work with international urban artists such as Banksy or Shepard Fairey (Obey) at festivals of street art or large-format mural interventions. In the past five years in Spain, a crew of five urban artists called BoaMistura have become important. Step by step, they broke into the street art world. With their project ‘Crossroads’ they made interventions in disadvantaged neighborhoods in countries such as Panama, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Brazil, and Algeria, with the firm intention of recovering degraded areas through urban art with the help of the local community. On the walls that BoaMistura paint, they usually present positive messages of love, hope, or solidarity. In 2012, they took over the Spanish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, with significant international reaction. BoaMistura and other street artists were also responsible for the work in June 2013 in the Madrid Congress Fair (IFEMA), with the largest Spanish interventions of street art during the Festival of Urban Trends, MULAFEST.

Also interesting are the interventions of the Spanish artist known as Belin in New York City (Manhattan), between 12th Avenue and 50th Street, made at the end of 2013, as well as the addition of the large murals that the Spanish Illustrator based in London, Ricardo Cavolo, painted in Toronto (Canada) at YUL airport. By mid-2014, the Spanish artist, Escif, will be prominent in the circuit of world street art. He will be the only urban artist from Spain who will participate in one of the most important international events of world street art, the Baltimore Open Walls in the United States.

Towards Public Art The special nature of urban art to recover street spaces through its own creativity is a gray area between what is thought of as public art and what is thought of as urban art. Currently, there are many Spanish artists working at this frontier who uniquely endeavor to reach the audience in a democratic way. People like Diana Larrea, Santiago Morilla, Itziar Barrio, Jorge Rodríguez Gerada, Marlon de Azambuja, Todo Por la Praxis, among others, are artists who work with urban intervention but take it to the territory of visual art, challenging the viewer and moving the artistic project from the street level to that of museum spaces.
This is not a guerrilla or aesthetic art practice; it is more conceptual with an intellectual discourse that goes beyond the work itself. In this way of working we also find the Spanish artist Juanli Carrión who lives in New York, whose next project ‘Outer Seed Shadow’ will be presented in 2014. This project will take place in the Soho district as a large intervention similar to a community garden made from plants originating from the home countries of the many immigrants who live in the city. At the same time, also in May 2014, the Spanish art collective mmmm…, will take part of the residency project ‘TRANSIT. Creative Placemaking with Europe in Baltimore’, about the urban regeneration of the Highlandtown neighborhood.

Outer Seed Shadow #01
A project by artist Juanli Carrión, in collaboration with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation takes the form of a public art installation. Over the past year Carrión has been carrying out interviews with immigrants living across Manhattan, allowing them to tell their stories of arrival in their own words and symbolically, in the form of plants they’ve selected that best represent themselves and their countries of origin. With the great variety of plants derived from dozens of interviews, the artist has created a 2,000 sq. ft. interactive community garden in the shape of Manhattan installed at Soho’s Duarte Square.

THIS IS NOT A MUSEUM...
Doménec Montserrat (Autor)
Esto no es un museo... (This is Not a Museum...) seeks to catalogue and reflect on mobile artifacts that traverse the public space and collide with the conventional museum exhibition. Instead of extending the lineal space on the museum’s walls, these artifacts reformulate the functions of the exhibition to a nomadic form, providing opportunities for direct and self-guided participation. The project expands the development of the social research and educational experience conceptualized as “a museum” or rather, provides an alternative to it.

The Experience of Seeing
This exhibition, drawn entirely from the collection of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, offers a fresh assessment of the late period in Miró’s work. The exhibition brings together 51 paintings, drawings and sculptures made in the period between 1963 and 1983 that testify the artist’s playful ingenuity until the very end of his life. Bold and colorful paintings employing his personal visual language alternate with near-abstract compositions. Although Miró had experimented with sculpture in earlier periods, it is only in the late years that painting and sculpture stand in direct dialogue with each other—a principal feature of this exhibition.
ALTA MODA by Mario Testino

The exhibition Alta Moda – literally “high fashion” in Spanish – is a series of photographic portraits of Peruvians wearing traditional and festive attire from the mountainous region of Cusco. It represents a bold departure for Testino from his work for fashion magazines. Alta Moda by Mario Testino is accompanied by a series of related public programs that will additionally serve to reinforce the Institute’s mission of promoting greater awareness and understanding of the culture of Spain in the United States through a steadfast dedication to advancing scholarship in the humanities and the arts.

THE NEW BREED OF SPANISH D.I.Y JENN PELLY
UNI
VER S by
Alba

Aside from the well known and established industry of festivals, alternative music flourishes in Spain through the D.I.Y culture. Pitchfork critic Jean Pelly draws a rich panorama of the bands to watch in 2014 in the Spanish indie scene.
Electronic sounds and dance floors currently dominate the idea of Spanish music in America, thanks to the international success of a few acts: the breezy dance-pop band Delorean, the rhythmic, blissed-out El Guincho, and most of all the dance producer John Talabot (who also runs a local label, Hivern Discs). But across the ocean, rock dreams still prevail—from indie and electronic pop to hardcore punk and experimental music, there are countless groups coalescing in various underground scenes, using scrappy guitars, analog tools, and simple melodies. Young labels like Famèlic, Canada, and La Castanya are at the heart of this. Along with the major Spanish festivals like Primavera Sound and Sónar Festival have come smaller homebred micro-festivals. In the face of economic crisis and Barcelona’s tourist playground, the new breed of Spanish D.I.Y. has created a culture they can control.
UNIVERS univvers.bandcamp.com
Son Bou by Dani Canto
Visiting Spain in 2012, I was often recommended the fledgling punk label Famèlic, run in part by the angular, hyperactive punk band Furguson. The music surged with a youthful energy that was undeniable. Formed in 2011, Famèlic was inspired by the lawless spirit of the hardcore scene in their native Vic. Famèlic now books a grassroots festival in Vic, Festival Hoteler, thrown at a friend’s hotel. I was unsurprised to learn that a great Famèlic band will be traveling to SXSW: Univers, a jangling indie pop group with deadpan vocals and the mechanized thud of a retro Phil Spector act, but sung in Catalan. Their LP comes out in March following an immersive 2012 EP.

MUSIC The new breed of Spanish D.I.Y
SVPER soundcloud.com/svper Formerly known as Pegasvs, this poised, darkly-shaded electronic pop band experiments with analog synths and smart, obscure influences like electronic provocateurs Psychic TV and Italian New Wave star Franco Battiato. On their excellent 2012 self-titled LP, the Barcelona duo of Sergio Pérez García and Luciana della Villa fused drum machines, krautrock flourishes, and dissonant synth noise with aerodynamic sing-song hooks. There is a romance to their mood-heavy Spanish-sung sound, which juxtaposes images of the sea and fields with their comparatively industrial approach.
us Anton
SVPER by Ch
Luciana says the financial crisis has lead to the scene becoming more transient—shops and venues open and close, artists come and go. “The economic crisis is felt in all the country and in the music scene too,” she says. “A few years ago people used to go to every show they liked, but now you have to choose because maybe you can’t afford everything.” The sense of movement can have positive effects, too. Svper is at work on their next LP, to be released in 2014, and they’re headed to Austin for the SXSW festival in March. Fans of Svper should hear the widescreen dream pop of electronic duo Desert, who are also bound for SXSW, as well as the more experimental duo ·Y·, who make noirish minimal music inspired by coldwave, early industrial, and eery film soundtracks.
SON BOU sonbou.bandcamp.com Indie pop, the noisy lo-fi kind that was first popular through labels like Slumberland in the 90s, is huge in Spain. The Barcelona garage trio Son Bou work from this tradition of reverb-laden twee while honing their own approach—heavy on guitar fuzz with featherlight vocals and sharp melodies. It was a strong enough sound to help spawn the existence of their small label, Hao Discos. According to co-founder Maria Elisa Gomez, she and her friend Nacho started the label in 2012 to put out Son Bou’s 7” vinyl EP.
Gomez calls it an exciting time for independent music in Spain— a wave of new energy that began around 2012. From the outside, the Barcelona scene can seem disjointed, with separate electronic, indie rock, and punk interests. But Gomez says these scenes are overlapping more in 2014, resulting in expanded audiences and cross-pollination. Genre restrictions are more often dismissed, which Gomez says is evident in bands like Ciudad Lineal, El Último Vecino, Y, Sect, Antiguo Régimen, and Wind Atlas. When I ask about labels similar to Hao Discos, Gomez mentions Boston Pizza and Discos Humeantes, labels she looks up to “not only in terms of the music but also their way of doing things.”

BELGRADO belgrado.bandcamp.com Belgrado is not the kind of Barcelona band you’re going to catch playing an early slot at Primavera. In fact, you’re not going to see this driving black-and-studs post-punk group anywhere unless you know how to locate the squats and youth houses. Should you track them down, the hyper-underground Belgrado typically don’t charge money for their shows—a testament to the fiercely independent, anarchist spirit of their music. “We do it for beer,” the guitarist, Fergu, tells me about their approach to gigging. “DIY!!!”
Beginning in 2010, Belgrado have released two of the better Spanish LPs I’ve heard—2011’s Belgrado and 2013’s Siglo XXI have a palpable goth streak, drawing influence from 1980s coldwave. The catchy 2011 single “Clockwise” is a highlight of their catalogue, as are the Siglo songs sung in frontwoman Patricia’s native tongue (she was born in Poland). Belgrado will tour the U.S. in April surrounding an appearance at the New York City punk festival New York’s Alright, which will also feature a set by the excellent Spanish post-punk band SECT, in which Patricia drums. SECT’s song titles like “Masters and Slaves” and “Police repression” articulate their roots in UK anarcho-punk; their 2012 self-titled album from Discos Enfermos is a must-hear for those intrigued by Spanish punk.

UNA BESTIA INCONTROLABLE unabestiaincontrolable.net Barcelona is currently the hardcore punk mecca of Europe. For years, this was lead by Destino Final, the distorted, experimental hardcore band who recently broke up. The raw, rocketspeed force continues with bands like Glam, Sudor, La Urrs, and one of my personal favorites, the anarcha-feminist punk band Las Otras. But Una Bestia Incontrable, a psychedelic Catalan-sung hardcore hybrid, took the spot as the best active band from this scene with the release of their 2013 debut LP, Observant com el Món es destrueix.

Dial your lover’s number in a rotary phone. Dance in the cyberpunk future. Black and white movies. Scent of the Pacific and color of the Mediterranean. What best defines Le Parody is that it’s almost impossible to define. Andalusian Sole Parody provides the name (stressed on the next-to-last syllable, unlike the English word), and acts as the loop composer, ukulele player and voice. Cuban Frank Santiuste’s trumpet contributes to the tempered, enveloping harmony of this very personal project. Their interest in poetry and their exploration of electronic sounds, takes Le Parody to perform in the electronic music festival Forward 2014 in Washington DC, and in the poetry festival Poetas por Km2 in New York.
