MASTER THE UNIVERSAL SCIENCE AS A FOUNDATION OF INVENTION AND INNOVATION Today’s physicists are connecting science with engineering to develop new technologies and create powerful solutions. At the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, you will be prepared to master and apply the most fundamental and influential science—physics. Here, you will find an innovative community that strongly supports student research initiatives. You’ll be guided by world-class faculty in the heart of the Brooklyn Tech Triangle, a thriving technological hub of pioneering entrepreneurs.
MS IN APPLIED PHYSICS Our Master’s program brings together a balance of classroom theory and real-world practical application with opportunities for collaboration across the entire New York University community.
LEARN TO INNOVATE Gain the skills needed to thrive in sectors such as alternative energy, physics-based nanotechnology, quantum mechanics, health and wellness, and global information technology. Explore careers in research and development, consulting for government or privately owned, technology-based agencies, and higher education. Many students also go on to earn their doctorates.
MULTIFACETED CURRICULUM The graduate program in Applied Physics strongly supports student research initiatives. With only two required courses and manifold electives, the Master of Science in Applied Physics creates opportunities for student-conducted research projects inspired by the range of available coursework. A student must complete a minimum of 30 semester credits: ¢ 6 credits of basic courses
(Quantum Mechanics and two semesters of Graduate Seminar)
¢ 24 credits of elective courses
(may include a 6-credit research project or 9-credit thesis)
As many as 9 physics credits earned at the graduate level at another institution or up to 3 suitable courses from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences may be accepted towards the degree, with the approval of the graduate adviser.
ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS ¢ A bachelor’s degree with strong academic standing in physics, applied physics,
or a closely related discipline. (Note: Applicants with degrees in other fields may be admitted, but must fulfill certain prerequisite courses before being considered for acceptance.) ¢ An introductory background in physics, mathematics, chemistry,
and computer science. ¢ Letters of recommendation, GRE and TOEFL scores, and application
letters also will be considered. Visit engineering.nyu.edu/grad/requirements for additional information.

RESEARCH AND RESOURCES Our faculty are patent holders, Fellows of the Optical Society of America and the American Physical Society, and members of the National Academy of Inventors. You will collaborate with these leaders on dynamic projects backed by industry and government agencies. You will also have the opportunity to integrate your skills through cross-disciplinary collaboration with faculty from other New York University schools. All graduate students are encouraged to utilize facilities throughout the NYU community. At the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, the next generation of leaders and scholars are empowered to play a vital role in advancing physics research. Applied physics students gain hands-on experience in the MicroParticle PhotoPhysics Laboratory for BioPhotonics, where an interdisciplinary approach provides a unique platform for tackling current technological challenges.
LEADING INNOVATION IN VIRUS DETECTION Applied Physics Professor Stephen Arnold focuses his research on developing an ultra-sensitive Whispering-gallery wave biosensor. He pushes the limits of detection from single virus particles to single protein molecules. Arnold’s research is crucial to the identification and elimination of pathogens, enabling the advancement of modern health care solutions.
