You will be mentored in an interdisciplinary curriculum with a focus on subjects such as convex geometric and applied real-time analysis, and application of partial differential equations to mathematical physics. Our graduates pursue a wide range of careers, from software design and biostatistics to industrial engineering, across a spectrum of firms and government agencies.
Required courses include, but are not limited to, Linear Algebra I and II, and Intro to Math Analysis I and II. Remaining credits may be fulfilled by completing one of two tracks:
Thesis Option, comprised of 12 elective credits and a six-credit master’s thesis.
Examination Option, comprised of 18 elective credits, possibly with up to nine from approved sub-specialties in other departments. It includes a comprehensive oral examination based on your specific program of study.

Students in the Master of Science in Mathematical Sciences program are involved in a wide variety of courses and research opportunities to promote a multifaceted foundation for applying mathematics in the fields of science and engineering. With a significant volume of seminars and lectures, students receive extensive exposure to how complex mathematics can be used to pioneer research in areas such as number theory, scientific computing, and analytic and geometric inequalities. Students use the latest mathematical tools and have access to high-performance computing platforms to accomplish their work.
To advance research in mathematics and gain inspiration in related disciplines, students and faculty participate in research centers and lecture series.
In addition, the Courant Department of Mathematics regularly hosts scheduled colloquiums and seminars on the latest developments in a broad range of mathematical fields, including partial differential equations, applied mathematics probability, dynamical systems, geometric analysis, discrete and convex geometry, mathematical physics, algebraic geometry, number theory, and atmospheric ocean science.

DESIGNING COMPLEX ALGORITHMS FOR DIVERSE MATHEMATICAL APPLICATIONS
Associate Professor Michael O’Neil develops fast, analysis-based computational methods for solving integral and partial differential equations that arise in electromagnetics, acoustics, magnetohydrodynamics, and several other areas of classical physics. Efficient and accurate computational algorithms such as these are essential tools in all disciplines of engineering, streamlining computer-aided design and optimization.
