UNMATCHED OPPORTUNITIES Professional learning experiences are key components of a SUNY Maritime education. As a student, you’ll benefit from a wide variety of unique learning opportunities, thanks to our strong connections to the maritime industry and convenient location in New York City.

KIM CABRERA ‘18 “Transferring to SUNY Maritime and majoring in maritime studies was the best decision of my undergraduate career. I was able to take eye-opening courses which helped shape my future and taught me about the industry.”

PROFESSIONAL INTERNSHIPS If you pursue the internship track of the maritime studies program, you will complete a real-world work experience related to your academic studies and tailored to your interests. For example, you may choose to work with a shipping agent, intern at a museum, join the staff of a cruise ship, or teach in a foreign country. Select students even fulfill the internship requirement through the Williams-Mystic program.

WILLIAMS-MYSTIC Each year, outstanding maritime studies students in both intern and deck programs receive scholarship support to spend a semester traveling and studying through the Williams-Mystic program. Offered in partnership with Williams College and the Mystic Seaport Museum, this program makes it possible to engage in one-of-a-kind learning activities such as collecting oceanic data on a tall ship as it sails the Atlantic, or pondering passages from Moby-Dick while sitting on the deck of the world’s last remaining wooden whaling ship.

KENNETH DIBIASE ‘19 “Maritime studies really sparked my interests and gave me the tools I needed to expand my research. All the professors in this program are dedicated to helping you succeed.”

U.S. COAST GUARD DECK LICENSE If you choose the deck license track, you will graduate with both your B.S. degree and licensure from the United States Coast Guard. The deck license qualifies you to work onboard commercial vessels—navigating, handling cargo, maintaining the ship, and ensuring operational safety. To earn a USCG License, you must take additional courses during your undergraduate program, which include hands-on professional training aboard the Empire State VI. This program track requires you to belong to the college Regiment of Cadets, a disciplined lifestyle program that is not affiliated with the military.

HANNAH ARGIROS ‘21 “I love the intimacy of the program, the diversity of the curriculum and that I can get my U.S. Coast Guard License while taking courses that interest me.”

A GLOBAL MARITIME CENTER There’s a reason the first commercial maritime school in the nation was founded in New York Harbor. From a trading post for New Amsterdam settlers, to a critical battleground in the Revolutionary War, to the landing point for the nation’s immigrants in the early 20th century, New York City has played many essential roles in history. Today, New York/New Jersey is the third busiest port in the country and a hub for the largest maritime companies in the world. There is no better place for learning the history of the maritime industry and charting your own course in this venerable field.

LAUNCH YOUR CAREER SUNY Maritime graduates go on to graduate school in law, education, maritime policy, or the humanities, as well as careers across land and sea. Many students who have obtained the B.S. in maritime studies have gone on to work in the government, various branches of the military, shipping companies, museums, and other organizations.
