M.S. IN MARITIME AND NAVAL STUDIES The master’s degree in Maritime and Naval Studies is a multidisciplinary curriculum, focusing on maritime and naval history, art, literature, transportation, and environmental policy. The program consists of 31 credit hours and can be completed entirely online. A broad range of elective courses are available, so you can customize the program to fit your personal and professional goals.

KAREN E. MARKOE, PH.D. CHAIR, HUMANITIES DEPARTMENT SUNY DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR A Bronx native, Dr. Markoe received her Ph.D. in American history from Columbia University. The program is founded on many of the principles developed in her research on the role of the humanities in educating maritime professionals.
JOHN ROCCO, PH.D. GRADUATE PROGRAM COORDINATOR, MARITIME AND NAVAL STUDIES A recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, Dr. Rocco received his Ph.D. from the City University of New York Graduate Center. He has published several books of rock music criticism, and has extensively studied the importance of Moby-Dick in American popular culture.
ELISSA DEFALCO, PH.D. ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR Dr. DeFalco received her Ph.D. in literature from Roehampton University in London. Her research has led her deep into some of the world’s greatest archives to find stories of everyday people who went to sea.
