BACHELOR OF SCIENCE
MARINE ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
A LIVING LABORATORY There’s a reason the first commercial maritime school in the nation was founded in New York Harbor. New York/New Jersey is a hub for the largest maritime companies in the world. It is also a thriving natural saltwater and freshwater habitat for animal and plant life, and an ideal location for studying marine environmental science.
A WORLD OF DISCOVERY Uncover nature’s best-kept secrets and explore uncharted territory in SUNY Maritime’s Bachelor of Science in Marine Environmental Science program. On our beautiful waterfront campus, surrounded by the East River and the Long Island Sound, you’ll explore marine life and investigate current environmental issues such as climate change and water and air pollution. The program combines disciplines in marine and environmental science to prepare you to pursue an advanced degree, and for careers in fields such as environmental consulting, marine science, or meteorology.

B.S. IN MARINE ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE The Bachelor of Science in Marine Environmental Science (MES) program is an interdisciplinary exploration of the natural marine world. The research-focused curriculum includes general education requirements, major-specific core courses, and electives such as Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental Management, and Tropical Cyclones. Professional learning experiences are key components of a SUNY Maritime education. As a student in the MES program, you will either choose to complete a summer internship or pursue a U.S. Coast Guard Third Mate’s License. You will also specialize your degree by choosing a required minor.
REQUIRED MINOR OPTIONS • Marine Biology
• Meteorology and Oceanography
PROFESSIONAL INTERNSHIPS For a traditional, research-focused college experience, you will complete an internship related to your academic studies. For example, you may rehabilitate wildlife with the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation, or analyze geologic data at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. You may also conduct marine biology experiments and research with SUNY Maritime faculty, or work with the waterfront director to design and administer the science portion of the college’s Maritime Adventure Camp.
U.S. COAST GUARD DECK LICENSE A deck license qualifies you to work onboard commercial vessels, navigating, handling cargo, maintaining the ship, and ensuring operational safety. To earn a USCG Licence, you must take additional courses, which include hands-on professional training aboard the Empire State VI. This program track requires you to belong to the college Regiment of Cadets, a disciplined lifestyle program that is not affiliated with the military.

HANDS-ON OPPORTUNITIES At SUNY Maritime, the world is your lab—prepare to get your hands wet! In the Marine Environmental Science program, you’ll collect organisms and samples right from the bodies of water adjoining our 55-acre waterfront campus. You’ll work hands-on in our state-of-the-art instrumental room and newly renovated laboratories, specifically designed for biology, environmental science, and oceanography students. In the laboratory, you will explore topics such as physical, biological, geological, and chemical properties in the marine and atmospheric environments.
ALYSSA POURMONIR, ’14 “My internship opportunities gave me experience in forecasting, performing biological surveys in the field, identifying clam characteristics, writing technical papers, and interacting in a professional environment.”
INNOVATION IN THE WORKS To create a better research experience and enhance career opportunities for our students, SUNY Maritime is in the process of developing new courses in geographic information systems and building a new waterfront lab.
EXPERT FACULTY Professors in the MES program are dedicated educators who are selected for their incisive understanding in areas of environmental science, marine meteorology, oceanography, and biology, among others. Many are published authors who have contributed research on topics including hydrothermal vents, climate change on local marine waters, and fish population dynamics.
VINCENT CAVALERI, ’17 “While at Maritime, I spent two months working with the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation. I mainly helped with rehabilitating the seals and turtles. I aided in bringing the injured animals from the beaches to our facility, feeding them, and performing physicals.”
AMEERA KHAN, ’18 “Maritime offered an environmental aspect, which broadened my interests... What I learn in the classroom, especially the labs, replicates what I could be doing after graduation.”
