TAILORED PATHWAYS One of SUNY Maritime’s oldest traditions is the Regiment of Cadets. However, while the regiment is one of Maritime’s most visible features, participation is not required for all students. Here, you can choose the experience that’s right for you. The Regiment of Cadets offers a disciplined lifestyle, preparing students to earn their U.S. Coast Guard License and become crew members of commercial vessels. While the regiment follows a military model, it is not affiliated with the U.S. military, and there is no military service requirement. The regiment is also open to students not pursuing their U.S. Coast Guard License, but it is not required. For a more traditional college experience, you can also pursue a non-regimental lifestyle. All sports, clubs, and classes can be shared by regiment and non-regiment students alike.

SEA TERM The Sea Term is an integral part of the SUNY Maritime College experience for regimental students pursuing a U.S. Coast Guard License. You’ll gain hands-on professional training aboard the 17,000-ton, 565-foot Empire State VI training ship—the best equipped training ship in the nation. In preparation for the Sea Term, you’ll train on state-of-the-art simulators, designed to mirror actual shipboard activity. Under the direction of trained faculty and licensed mariners aboard the ship, you will take classes, explore international destinations, and practice the fundamentals of navigating and running a merchant vessel. While most students do all their training on the Empire State VI, you’ll have the option to complete your second Sea Term aboard a commercial vessel in our Cadet Shipping program.

CAREERS AFTER MARITIME SUNY Maritime graduates are leaders throughout the world. Whether they complete internships or earn a USCG License, our students typically go on to pursue successful careers as engineers, naval architects, ship officers, active duty military officers, and more. It’s no surprise that our institution is continuously ranked among the top colleges for return on investment.
