Howard University was founded. When doors opened for classes, there were six departments formally authorized by the charter signed by President Andrew Johnson.
1896
Dedication of the Andrew Ranking Chapel, which has historically served as a center for cultural and religious activities of the University since its construction during the presidency of Jeremiah Rankin (1889-1903).
1922
Lucy Diggs Slowe became the first female Dean of Women at Howard University. She was one of the founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority (1908). Slowe Hall was dedicated in her honor (1948).
1926
Historian Carter G. Woodson (former Howard professor and dean) founded Negro History Week, which eventually expanded to Black History Month.
1933
Thurgood Marshall graduated from the School of Law, going on to become the first AfricanAmerican Supreme Court Justice
1940

The School of Law was established, becoming the first Black law school in the nation.
1870
James Thomas Wormley received the Doctor of Pharmacy degree, becoming the first graduate of Howard’s Medical Department.

Howard University copyrighted the Alma Mater, which was coauthored by Class of 1916 graduates Joseph Hunter Brooks (lyrics) and Frederick Dewitt Malone (music). The Howard ROTC program was established.
Zora Neale Hurston and Eugene King published the inaugural issue of The Hilltop, Howard University’s student newspaper.
Dr. Mordecai Wyatt Johnson, Howard’s first Black and longest surviving president, assumed the presidency of the University.
1928
Howard University Gallery of Art was established, which now holds a permanent collection of more than 4,000 works of art
George Wiliam Cook Hall was formally dedicated. Professor Cook was born a slave in Virginia, but later earned a certificate and four degrees from Howard and served the university in various capacities for 50 years.
1942
Howard students pioneered stoolsitting in protest at a restaurant that refused service to African Americans, a tactic later incorporated by the civil rights movement
1964
1950
Political Science Professor Ralph Bunche became the first African American awarded the Nobel Prize
1953
Howard University purchased Griffith Stadium for future use as a hospital facility.
1970 The School of Business was founded.
1975
Jeanne Sinkford was appointed Dean of the Howard University School of Dentistry, the first female dean of any dental school in the U.S.
Nobel Laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison graduated from the University, where she majored in English and minored in the classics.
1954
Howard University alumnus Thurgood Marshall’s brilliant victory in the Brown vs. Board of Education case paved the way for the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964, and the Voting Rights Act in 1965.
1990
L. Douglas Wilder, a 1959 graduate of the School of Law, became the first African American to be elected as governor of a U.S. state, serving from 1990-1994.
1994

The Armour J. Blackburn Center was constructed and then dedicated a year later.
1983
The University acquired the title to the Beltsville Campus.
The Howard University Middle School of Mathematics and Science opened its doors as the first charter school established by a university in the Washington metropolitan area.
2014
Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA (B.S./M.D. ’94), became the 17th President of Howard University.
Howard University awarded the Doctor of Laws degree to South African President Nelson Mandela at a special convocation.

1960
Civil Rights Activist Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., Esq., graduated from the School of Law. Jordan is both a past president of the National Urban League and former Executive Director of the United Negro College Fund.
2005
The International Affairs Center, which was established in 1993, was renamed the Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center.
2001
The Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library was dedicated. It is named for Louis Stokes, who served as a U.S. Congressman from Michigan from 1968-1999, and was the first African-American Congressman elected from the state of Ohio. A new Law Library opened to provide a state-of-theart facility with complete collections of legal materials for the students and faculty.

The Founders Library, which was named after the 17 men who signed the Howard University Charter, was designated a National Treasure.
Google Tech Exchange program established with Howard University to provide students with an academic year of hands-on practice at Google’s California campus

Howard University alumna Kamala Harris (B.A. ‘86) was elected Vice President of the United States , making history as both the first woman and first woman of color vice president. She had already broken barriers in 2010 as the first woman to be elected attorney general of California.
