Firstly, manage your time. The common way would be developing a timetable that you can reasonably stick to. You can prioritise the most important things like studying sessions and avoid unnecessary commitments. Planning beforehand can give you insights of what you should study in, say, a week’s time, while ensuring you have balanced play, work and rest. This can be significant if you wish to keep stress out of your school life.

STEP 1

Secondly, learn to relax. Find activities that you enjoy and free up your schedule for them. It is up to you to play sports, surf the internet or listen to music. Having a relaxing hobby can allow you to take a break amidst the tension of school work while lifting your mood, providing you with a social outlet and potentially improving your well-being. Of course, you can join activities held by our clubs and societies to explore your interests.

STEP 2

Thirdly, seek academic help. If you stumble on a confounding concept, don’t be afraid to ask the teacher or your peers, be it during or after the lesson. Misconceptions and confusion can easily build up over time and the stress would be quite unbearable as you have to try to clear them at the same time by cramming. You could also find online materials eg. YouTube videos for related information and revision.

STEP 3

Wheelers offers a large selection of English books, with many genres such as literature, biographies, adventure, thriller, and more. Many of these books are famously known around the world and are worth a read after the exam period for relieving stress.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

A classic set in the 1960s, the story revolves around a girl named Jean, whose father is a lawyer fighting against racism. While told through the eyes of a six year old girl, many themes explored in the story are worth thinking about and relevant to our lives today, such as written and unwritten laws, class, and gender roles.

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief By Rick Riordan

A story set in today’s times, Rick Riordan integrates Greek myths and cultures into today’s world, mixing ancient and modern alike into a big story. Using light-hearted humour, sarcasm, and adventure, the book brings out darker themes like domestic abuse, low self-esteem, and sacrifice.

The Giver (Quartet) By Lois Lowry

A dystopian fiction book set in the future, The Giver steps away from the tradition of action and adventure and instead focuses more on emotion. The story revolves around Jonas, a twelve-year old who is chosen to be the next “Giver”, and realizes that people exchanging their emotions for no longer feeling any pain and misery. The conflict between safety and emotion is explored in depth within the book and shows us that emotion is perhaps the most important human aspect.

The Mother Tongue By Bill Bryson

This book talks about the evolution of the English language. With snarky wit and deep insight, Bill Bryson will take you on a journey on how an inadequate, second rate language of a small village has become one of the most commonly spoken and famous languages in the world.

Heaven is For Real By Todd Burpo

Young 4 years old Colton miraculously survives an emergency appendectomy, ending up getting a glimpse of Heaven in the process. This book explores the mystical and religious side of our world as we know it, and through the simple words of a child, gives readers an opportunity to think about what the afterlife is like.
