PRESIDENT’S WELCOME MESSAGE
Ni Alex Koila Ngati Dear Members and Supporters, Welcome to the BCA-USA 28th Annual Convention. Our sisters and brothers in Houston have been relentless in their efforts to ensure that this year's event is a blast and that it raises the bar one notch higher. I can feel the buzz in the air!
Beyond Our Challenges: Navigating the Future
in order to build a robust future for our association. Part of navigating the future is ensuring that our governing documents are aligned to reflect this growth and changes within the association, and the expectations of the society in which we operate. We equally need to work hard to develop innovative ways to attract and retain our membership and to raise funds for our many projects back home. In addressing these challenges and indeed, in navigating the future, we must strive to succeed together. As one of our African proverb goes, "one hand, cannot tie a bundle". I remain confident that our exemplary solidarity and commitment to this association and its mission will enable us move beyond our current challenges to ensuring a future that is resilient for BCA-USA. I am delighted to annouce that Reverend Father Sama Francis Muma, will be our keynote speaker at this year's convention. Fr. Sama has been a BCAUSA member since 2010 and is an ordained priest for the Archdiocese of Detroit, Michigan for eight years. He will be elaborating more on the theme of our convention by looking at how we can best make use of our varied backgrounds, diverse experiences, opinions and beliefs, to facilitate the building of a stronger and better association. The 2015 Convention Planning Committee (CPC) under the leadership of Ba Fomukong has worked with various committees and the host Chapter to put together a great program for this weekend. I could not have asked for a better team of dedicated, selfless and hard working men and women from our beloved association! Thank you! You are truly the reason we are second to none, when it comes to convention hosting. I will forever, be indebted to you all, for all you have done to ensure that our 2015 convention is a successful one. I wish you all a productive convention weekend and an enjoyable stay in Houston.
The theme of this year's convention is, "Beyond Our Challenges: Navigating the Future." Last year, we had elections. Elections provide an opportunity to select new leaders to stir the affairs of our association. Leaders come and go but the association remains. The challenge for each elected officer of this association is to leave the organization stronger and better. This time is no different and we must not lose our focus but remain steadfast in our individual and collective endeavors, so that BCA-USA remains the pace setter of Cameroonian cultural associations in the Diaspora. Alex Koila Ngati In over a quarter of a century we have grown National President, BCA-USA from a small family reunion to a large organization president@bca-usa.org with over 275 registered members. With our growth, have come new challenges which we need to address BALI CULTURAL ASSOCIATION - USA 4

WELCOME TO HOUSTON Ba Fomukong, President, BCA-USA Houston Dear BCA-USA members and friends of goodwill, On behalf of BCA-Houston Chapter, I would like to welcome you to the 2015 BCA-USA annual convention in Houston, Texas. BCA-Houston chapter is the most vibrant group in Houston and is proud to be host of the 28th annual convention. It has been 10 years since the last BCAUSA convention was hosted in Houston and we are all excited host you again. After accepting to host our brothers, sisters and friends in Houston, BCA-Houston Chapter members have worked tirelessly to put together logistics for the convention. To begin with, we created committees within the chapter to align with the National Committee Chairs and the National Executive Team for a smooth communication process. This helped create more awareness about BCA-USA within our chapter and also strengthened communication between chapter members and the executive body. BCA-Houston is the most diverse amongst BCAUSA Chapters. Our members are committed to the BCA-Houston Chapter and to BCA-USA national. BCA-Houston Chapter members are dedicated in promoting education in Bali. We have contributed every year towards the teacher sponsorship program in Bali. We are currently completing a $14,000 water project at Ancilla Catholic Comprehensive College in Bali. This will provide tap water to the college and neighboring communities. Most importantly BCAHouston Chapter members are faithful to supporting each.
This year’s convention will be marked with BCAUSA constitutional amendment. It is a milestone you don’t want to miss. So while in Houston, attend each event and have fun. BCA-Houston members have put aside activities for all age range starting with a city wide view from the open gym and the pool at the roof of the hotel. We hope you take time to enjoy these and other attractions in Houston. Welcome to Houston! Participate, have fun, and be blessed with a safe trip back to your various destinations. Committee outreach activities included dialing in to some Ndakum meetings just to greet members and share words of encouragements with them, visiting chapters whenever possible, making phone calls and using our e-group to update members. To inspire, appreciate and excite members, we introduced Talking Tom messages, Inspirational messages and Good morning greetings. 12

Winifred Nukuna Vanyounga On behalf of Membership Committee About some 16 years ago members began to ask the question what is in BCA-USA for me. This question prompted the leadership to seek details of what membership was asking for. In 1998 I was commissioned to find out what we could do for our members. I suggested and invited a guest speaker to give us information on Life Insurance during the Atlanta Convention. Late Mr. Denis Mufosi from Dallas graciously accepted our invitation and received a standing ovation for delivering and answering questions on how and why it was very important to have good preparation in case of our departure. Only a hand full of members bought that idea and signed on. Yet after that, we experienced the death of a few Bali people and we were all called on to contribute to send these bodies home. Later came the group Life Insurance initiative led by our formal Vice president Ni Michael Gang. He worked tirelessly to see the BALI CULTURAL ASSOCIATION - USA 14
success of this program and after a few years everyone was not contributing like they should have and some ndakums ended up paying for members who never paid back leaving them in a deficit and finally the program was discontinued due to lack of funds. Four years ago Ni Blaise Azangue introduced Nkap Ngeh and together he and Ma Patience Fofung worked hard to make it successful to no avail. Members defaulted in payments and BCA-USA ended up in the red by subsidizing for members and finally this too was discontinued. In the midst of these trials, we lost members, we contributed and sometimes the pressure was more than we could handle. It is with all of these in mind that BCA-USA is introducing Nkap Ntod. • So if you are reading this and asking, so how and why do we think Nkap Ntod will be any different? I am here to say Nkap Ntod is very different because: • There is only One Time registration fee of $50.00 to show commitment for adults and $10.oo per child. • Contributions are only required at time of death. • Payout is easy because the money is in house and no red tapes. • Contribution is spread out amongst members equally.

TALKING DOLLARS & CENTS: UPDATES FROM FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE
Ma Lilian Fokwang, Chair, Fundraising Committee This year the Fundraising Committee has developed innovative fundraising ideas to raise funds for different BCA USA projects.
Achievements The committee raised $43K during the last financial year for the Bali Multipurpose Centre project (MPC)! Thank you to all who contributed to this through the various convention packages (Gold, Diamond and Royal Diamond), floor donations during the convention in Washington DC and the Dollar a Day campaign which we ran last year. This amount goes a long way towards helping us continue construction of the Bali Multipurpose Centre project. In December 2014, the Committee participated in its first ever #GivingTuesday campaign. #GivingTuesday is an annual campaign to promote a national day of giving at the start of the holiday season in North America. The #GivingTuesday campaign raised funds in support of the BCA Health Committee’s healthcare projects in Bali. We are so grateful to all donors who gave so generously to help us improve healthcare in Bali. 18
BALI CULTURAL ASSOCIATION - USA
BCA-USA MIRROR Largest ever Donation to the MPC This year, we also received the largest ever one time donation to the MPC through a generous donation of $14, 0000 from the Ba Tita Ningmua and Queen Kayeba Fomunung Memorial Foundation. This is the largest ever one time donation received by BCA-USA! Donors behind this foundation are the children of late Ba Tita Ningmua and Queen Kayeba Fomunung. They have come together to combine their giving to the MPC into a charitable gift in honour of their parents through this memorial foundation. Adding this donation to the children’s combined cumulative giving so far, the Ba Tita Ningmua and Queen Kayeba Fomunung Memorial Foundation becomes the first $30,000 club donor to the MPC. We are super excited to have the foundation as the first MPC Emerald Club Donor in BCA*. On behalf of BCA-USA and the people
of Bali, a million thanks to the children of late Ba Tita Ningmua and Queen Kayeba Fomunung for this most generous donation and special way of honouring of their parents. Your generous gift will go a long way towards supporting the MPC. Thank you so much. *A note about our MPC Recognition Levels: To reflect and acknowledge the amazing generosity and support of our valued donors to the MPC, the Fundraising Committee introduced cumulative giving levels and donor recognition as part of its current capital campaign dubbed “Raise for the Finish”. The capital campaign was launched in 2010. Our donor recognition levels reflect donations from individuals, combined giving from couples, families or friends as well as donations from local BCA chapters, foundations and corporations. Our current recognition levels are:

Future Plans Besides fundraising for the Bali Multipurpose Center, later this year, the committee will embark on a fundraising on behalf of the Education Committee. The committee will also run another #GivingTuesday campaign to support the work of the Health Committee in Bali. The BCA-USA 5K AIDS Walk This year, we are also launching the 5K walk as a fundraising drive for the MPC. This is an
individualised and easy-to-use web based campaign that will collect donations for the MPC directly online. Individual and group fundraising pages can be created and used to solicit donations online from people within an individual’s social networks. With the active participation of our members, this innovative strategy will help us raise additional funds for the MPC. Our target is to raise $30,000 through this initiative. We are counting on every BCA member and chapter to help us meet and even BCA-USA.ORG

BCA-USA 2015 HEALTH COMMITTEE REPORT Objectives The objectives of the BCA-USA Health Committee are to educate the Bali community in Bali and the USA and to raise awareness about healthcare challenges within the community and how the community can work to overcome the challenges.
The committee applies the following tools to meet these objectives: 1. Health fairs and health screening programs
Ni Nubia Kaba, Chair, Health Committee
By Nubia Kaba, Committee Chair (Reappointed August 6, 2014 for a second term)
The Health Committee organizes health fairs and health screening activities in the USA and in Bali where community members are screened for health problems and have the opportunity to get counseling and/or recommendation to seek specialized care. The committee also uses health surveys to assess the healthcare gaps and needs of its community.
Members: Kuna Titamohkumi Florence Bassa Beatrice Tangeh Joseph Fomukong Augustine Njinjoh Bola Fongod (Youth representative) Bridget Kaspa
Introduction In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, individuals must understand the causes or potential causes of their ailments and know how to avoid and control them or protect themselves from these causes. Health education, therefore, has been the primary tool that the Health Committee has employed within the last 3 years to reach its goals of raising health awareness within the Bali community back home and here in the USA.

Health Committee Meetings: The Health Committee has had 2 meetings (November 9, 2014 and March 1, 2015) so far to discuss the needs of the community, in terms of healthcare improvement.
Achievements: The Health Committee had the following • The Chair met with the Mayor of Bali, in achievements, since May 2014 to report: December 2014, to discuss the prospect of the Health • Under the Health Committee’s motto “The Committee donating trash cans to the Bali community. The purpose of the meeting was to inquire whether the Bali council would take responsibility of collecting the trash. • The Chair also discussed the idea of the Health Committee sponsoring 2 public health officers to cover the Bali sub-division and to educate the community on hygiene and public health. • The Chair visited some health centers in Bali in order to ascertain the needs of these facilities when it comes to healthcare delivery resources. faced with a challenge, which is the lack financial ability. The Health Committee is run with funds from the BCA-USA general fund, which is not enough to cover the basic healthcare projects in Bali. The Committee’s greatest challenge is to raise funds in order to acquire and donate healthcare supplies to the healthcare facilities. The committee, therefore, has to come up with ways of fundraising for this purpose, if it wants to make a difference in the lives of the Bali community. Some of the ways that the committee can achieve this is by collaborating with other committees within BCA-USA and to go out of the Bali community to solicit for funds.
Future Health Committee engagements: The Health Committee will engage in the following activities till the end of its term in May 2016: • Conduct a health screening at the 2015 Houston convention. During this convention, the

Health Committee will man a health booth where participants can have their blood pressure measured and can seek health information. • Complete the health survey in Bali and compile a report for the BCA-USA members. • Conduct a fundraiser at the Houston convention under the theme, “Leave your change behind for health”, in order to raise funds for health projects in Bali. • Organize a physical activity session at the Houston convention on Friday morning. • Donate some medical supplies to some healthcare facilities in Bali, in order to improve their working conditions and the ability to deliver care to its population. • Organize and conduct a continuous education program in Bali in order to keep the healthcare personnel in Bali informed and up-to-date with their medical and scientific knowledge. • Conduct a health screening in Bali at the end of the year. • Create health awareness flyers for the general population in Bali. These flyers will be distributed to health centers, hospital, schools, etc. Ni Nubia Kaba, for the BCA-USA Health Committee Chair, BCA-USA Health Committee■

“Backup is the one word that is overused and continues to be overused in the computer world. Its importance may not be emphasized in the real world but it will be for BCA-USA members when you or your child suddenly embarks on the journey of no return. BCA-USA has toyed around with this idea since 2012. It is in this regard that ProCom and Membership Committee (MemCom) through NEC has worked on the Nkap Ntod Project which is ready to be rolled out this year. Enrollment period starts on June 01, 2015 and ends on September 30, 2015. It will be open to all members of BCA-USA who have paid their national dues and their one time registration of $50.00 of Nkap

It was in this regard that BCA-USA embarked on the Pew Project as part of the Centenary Anniversary celebrations of Presbyterian Church Ntafoang in 2014. Many thanks to Ba Sam Fotung, who helped ProCom to manage the project on the ground till the end. ProCom constructed and delivered eighteen pews worth $2000.00 to Presbyterian Church Ntanfoang which were received with gratitude, during this handing over ceremony. The Rev. Pastor was very appreciative of the donations and encouraged BCA-USA to continue to make a difference within the community. He promised that any financial contributions made to the church will be put in very good use and made transparent from now going forward. Moved by what

Gungong, Naka and Bossa Projects During vacation in December 2014, ProCom wanted to look at other ways of impacting other villages in Bali Nyonga. We visited Gungong, Nakaah and Bossa to find out how BCA-USA could have a positive impact on these communities. In Gungong, the government school was in desperate need of toilets for students and staff. In Nakaah it was the same thing. The Bossa health center where we visited was in need of supplies like gloves, syringes, blood pressure cuffs, blood sugar strips and sterilizers. We asked Gungong and Nakaah to submit their budgets and promised Bossa we will see how we can help with these supplies and get back to them. As for the two schools, no promises were made but we told them that during our yearly convention, this will be presented and a response provided in December when we visit. In all these places, they were very happy that BCA-USA thought about them to the point where representatives were sent to meet with them. They wanted us to convey to the general body that they pray for us each day, for God to guide and protect us in all we do■

Like all Bali women, the First Lady of BCA Houston represents the glue that holds the family fabric together. Although her plate is full with school, work, and family commitments, she still finds time to send daily reminders to keep the 2015 Convention front and center in our consciousness. Usually on weekends, she puts her culinary skills to test to ensure that her family eats healthy and to spend quality family time together. It is not unusual to find the Fomukongs in the evenings, relaxed and having tea with pastries that will put Martha Stewart to shame. • 2014 was quiet hectic! We assisted the 2014 Convention Planning Committee in celebrating the Fon’s visit to our annual convention. We participated in celebrations of joy and sadness with our BCA USA community and by God’s Grace our direct membership enjoyed a year of peace. We left DC promising to keep our membership motivated about BCA and most importantly to recruit friends and family to join BCA USA so that together we could work for Bali. Here is what we achieved, what we are still struggling with our vision for the future and how we think you can help.

We were represented at the Leadership Summit in Dallas. We submitted a committee report. We recruited two new members to join the committee We have lunched the “My Heritage Project”a chance for members especially the young people of this organization to trace their roots and understand their lineage. (we are aiming to have at least five completed projects by the time we meet in Houston). We have pushed for and obtained 60 registered kids coming to the Convention in Houston. (Our goal is to have 100% registration of every child, 0-12yrs old who attends the convention). We have secured a professional service at very affordable rate to provide nanny services for parents during this upcoming convention.
Conference calls are still poorly attended and email communications are still at 25% Securing affordable, reliable nanny service is still a big huddle. In fact this is still the biggest area of need for the organization. Fundraiser ideas to keep our kids engaged and to have them start recognizing the need to give back to the community is still looming. Equal representation in all BCA USA regions. We need reps in the different regions to join our committee to help us send information about our members in a timely manner.
At the convention this year On Thursday night, we will be working in collaboration with the cultural committee in celebrating births and marriages that have occurred within our community last year, and this year. We want to use this opportunity to congratulate the following couples on their marriages and births:

BALI CULTURAL ASSOCIATION CONVENTION SCHEDULING AND CHECK-IN SYSTEM REDESIGN By Dob Njinimbam and Lenyonga Fomunung Co-Chairs, Process Improvement Committee The current paper-centric operations of the convention are not effective in keeping guests abreast of activities, requesting member evaluations of activities, or tracking who the guests are and when they arrive at events. There have also been difficulties with host hotels and the conference regarding the noise levels at the check-in desk, with accompanying threats of eviction. A faster check-in process would alleviate potential problems with the hotel and increase overall satisfaction among attendees. The organization is also looking to expand the use of child care services, and the check-in process should encourage this objective by promoting this service’s visibility and availability. In order to better understand the needs and receptiveness of the user population, we conducted an online Qualtrics survey which was sent to all members of the organization and promoted by the organization leadership. This provided good information on the technological aptitude of BCA members and assisted us in defining our project scope. Using this data, we were able to offer specific recommendations
for online applications and technology resources solutions, as our survey results indicated these would be used by the membership if available. Based on the survey results and our analysis of the current system, we propose to modify the current system in three key areas: check-in, ticketing, and schedule access, to improve the convention experience. New applications, online schedules, and use of devices in the check-in process are the proposed interventions that we suggest to improve the current system.
be sped up to minimize long lines and encouraging child care services should be part of the process. An additional goal for improvement was the implementation of an online schedule, which would allow for better updates and ongoing communication between the attendees and staff. Having an online schedule would improve communication between organizers and attendees, and by extension the hotel and child care services. In order to assess whether technological solutions might be embraced by the BCA membership, a survey was conducted via Qualtrics. Our Goals for improvement communications leader, Dob, used The goals regarding the contacts within the organization check-in process are clear: it must to distribute the survey to those

Above is a concept app that Dob Njinimbam coded to give our team and BCA-USA a visual and technical insight on the technical and aesthetic aspect of a conference scheduling mobile app. This app was created using various frameworks and coding languages from open-source platforms. The solutions to the key organizational problems we identified, check-in and online scheduling are easy to implement and inexpensive as well. These solutions should be possible to implement within the scope of budget and volunteer capabilities and meet the organization’s needs.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE (EDUCOM) REPORT
Ni Fidelis Kaspa, Co-Chair, EDUCOM
The overall mission and goal of EDUCOM is to advance literacy in general and to promote scholarship amongst youth in the Bali Community. It is also a goal to increase the visibility of BCA USA in this locality. It stands out clearly that this is a crucial mission as it constitutes molding the building blocks of our community and hence the central role that this committee represents within our association. Since its enactment for the current mandate with the appointment of the Co-chairs, Ni Fidelis KASPA and Ma Quinta BILA , we went to work to constitute the committee with members from a wide base of the BCAUSA jurisdiction. This was by any standard a daunting task as we were soon to discover that there are less people available to serve than catches the eye.

In order to achieve the above goals, we will need a lot commitment and hard work. Out of that, one thing stands out clearly, FUNDING. Suffice to say that EDUCOM is like a farm, where-in, healthy seeds must be planted before expecting the hefty harvest in return. REPORT OF THE FON’S ADHOC COMMITTEE
By Ba Fobesi Gwanbila Chair, Silver Jubilee Fon’s Committee The Fon’s adhoc committee was created to organize and coordinate the visit of our Paramount Fon and senator Doh Gahyonga III to the USA. It was quite a journey and a learning experience for our committee. In spite of all the ups and down, it was an honor for us to serve our community in this way. It was an honor for us to contribute towards the celebration of our Paramount Fon as one of the First Senators of Cameroon. In realizing our mandate of coordinating the visit of His Royal Highness and ensuring he had a successful visit, we proved once more that Bali people are as proud as we talk and walk. We came together and made this visit a success. Our thanks to the President for the vision to create this adhoc committee. We are grateful to all the traditional leaders within our community, Ndakongni Oklahoma, Ndahntod DC, BCA-Kansas city, NdahntodAtlanta, BCA-Georgia, generosity and time dedicated to the work of the committee. We want to specially thank every Bali person who made a financial contribution to support the visit. REPORT FROM THE CULTURE COMMITTEE
We will begin by expressing gratitude to the president Ba Sam Alex Ngati and the NEC for given us the opportunity to chair this important arm of BCA-USA. Briefly said, we are proud to serve in your government. We also want to thank distinguished members of the Culture Committee for their enormous input in giving BCA-USA the lift that it deserves from the traditional perspective. More important, we lack words to appreciate all the former Culture chairs who laid the foundation upon which this committee is thriving today. That being said, we are committed to revive certain aspects of our tradition that have witnessed little or insignificant attention in the diaspora over the years.

alongside chapter presidents. We are also positive that this will eliminate some of the bottle necks that have existed in the past between chapter presidents and Ta-kums’or better still, give Ta kums’ the leeway to function within the ambit of BCA-USA in case the Chapter president goes silent or redundant. Additionally, we also hope to propose the incorporation of our traditional problem solving mechanism into our constitution. Our tradition empowers elders in the community to intervene during crisis and to resolve issues within organizations or Nda-Nkums in a way that is most appropriate and peaceful. If this approach is embraced, we are optimistic that it will minimize some of the issues that have escalated problems instead of resolving them such as cyber fight as we have witnessed in the past.
In the days ahead, we intend to initiate a join quarterly working session between NEC and Presidents of the various NdaNkums’ here in the United States. BALI GA NDAKUM REPORT 2015 parents with very young children reminding some of the old folks of the constitution of the Ndakum 10-15years ago. But it is exciting to see these young people excited about the possibility of what we can do as a people. We have 25 registered members as of this report with almost half that number of members’ children under the age of 12.
Meetings
By Ma Lilian Fomunung, Secretary General, BCA Georgia Ndahkum It is no secret that the Bali GA Ndakum has suffered some set-backs in recent times in its almost 21 years of existence. Like every family, it has taken its share of beatings over the years but recently the very fabric of its existence was threatened. But because family is who we are, and Bali is our only and collective destination for the people of this Ndakum, we are slowly getting back in shape. Our members believe in the possibility of a better tomorrow and support the general body of BCA USA, its mission, and most importantly the legacy that was planted here in GA almost 28years ago! So it is in that spirit that we say, bravo BCA USA! We will not re-hatch the past but will forge ahead and place our understanding in the words of Christ in Mathew 8:22 “Let the dead bury their dead.” We are a people with a purpose and join our brothers and sisters nationwide in celebrating our collective organizational progress. It is the reason why our members have taken the decision to come to Houston to support the hosting chapter and to join in celebrating our culture.
Membership Our current membership is made up of veterans of the Ndakum and new people who have just moved into town. 90% of our members are young BALI CULTURAL ASSOCIATION - USA 46
As our membership increased, our meeting venue changed to hotel conference rooms when we could find one to accommodate the crowd. But we have again revisited the idea as new members have joined the group necessitating occasional family visits to communion with new members. But the hosting venues still remain optional for those who prefer hotel conference rooms. Meetings are held every last Saturday of the month except prior arrangements have been made to change dates. We carry out announcements and discussions that require immediate actions before meeting dates, online or via instant text message communications Since January, we have met regularly. Last month we visited with the Azangues and celebrated the ‘born-house’ for babies Blaise Jr and Helen. We also participated in the celebration of the baptism of the twins London and Leigh Fokum and the one year anniversary of Vednyongha Fobesi.
Community Involvement We have not been active in participating in our local Georgia community activities in the past several years but our new President, Ni Isidore Fokum is working to change that. With approval from the house, he has re-registered our Ndakum with CAMCOGA which is the umbrella organization for the Cameroonian Community in Georgia. We are also coming to Houston to perform at the cultural evening after a three year hiatus.

OKLAHOMA 2016
The people of Oklahoma salute and welcome you all to the 2016 Annual BCA–USA Convention. This will be an extraordinary ceremony marking the 29th annual convention of our beloved association. Oklahoma is the 46th state in the United States. It became a state in November 1907 and is actually the 28th largest state by population which is currently about 3.8 million. The name Oklahoma is from the Choctaw Indian word “okla” meaning people and “humma”meaning red (land of the red people). Most of the state lies in an area known as Tornado Alley characterized by frequent interaction between cold and warm air masses, producing severe weather, with the highestrisk months from April to June. An average of 60 tornadoes strike the state per year—one of the highest rates in the world. Due to its position between zones of differing prevailing temperature and winds, weather patterns within the state can vary widely between relatively short distances .Tornado is dangerous and life threatening but the efforts of the gods of our forefathers had never been relentless in being our watch keepers, and to God be the glory.

FIVE QUESTIONS FOR MA JULLIET TASAMA, BCA-USA REPRESENTATIVE IN CAMEROON
In July, 2014 Ma Juliette Tasama was appointed as the first ever BCA-USA representative in Cameroon. She took up her appointment in December. The BCA-USA Mirror recently spoke with her to find out more about her and her work as the BCA USA rep in Cameroon.
Tell us about yourself. I am called different names in different settings and functions by different groups of people. But the name on my official documents is Julliet Nahlela Tasama. I am the first child in a family of five. I am a granddaughter to the Fohtungs. My parents are resident in Bafoussam. I was raised by my grandmother and I am residing with her here in Bali at the Fohtung’s family estate in Njenka Hausa. I have been volunteering my services to the re-codification and revalorization of Mungaka for five years now. I am obsessed with community development initiatives. I am a disciplinarian too. I am passionate about many things. I sing and play the guitar. I am the BCA-USA representative in Cameroon. I am a vessel at the disposal of God for the service of His people and for the glory of His name. I am a ray of hope to my generation. I am a Christian of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon (PCC). What is your background? I have a BA in Linguistics from the University of Buea where I graduated in 2009. I work at the Cameroon Christian University (CCU) Bali. I was the pioneer Administrative Assistant to the then Vice-Chancellor, but I am currently serving in the Institute of Science, Engineering and Technology. I am a volunteer researcher on the BALI CULTURAL ASSOCIATION - USA 56
Ma Juliet Tasama, BCA-USA Rep in Cameroon Mungaka Rehabilitation Project and the Technical Adviser to the Mungaka Rehabilitation Committee (MRC). I am also the Founder of National Languages Sanctuary (NALSANC) - a non-profit association aimed at promoting the use of national languages for social communication, teaching and learning. I am a mother tongue literacy promoter and trainer. I was admitted for an MA in Linguistique Appliqué aux Langue Africain (Applied Linguistics) at the University of Dschang in 2014. I am currently part of the pioneer batch of students for a professional Masters in Educational Measurement and Evaluation offered at the University of Bamenda, Cameroon.
“ I accepted this honour because I share in the vision BCA has.”
BCA has not had an official representative in Cameroon before.
BCA-USA MIRROR Can you tell us about some of your responsibilities? The responsibility of this office is to implement BCAUSA’s policies and procedures within its projects in Bali; to facilitate information gathering and validation, to identify and define potential projects and risks associated with them, and most of all, to coordinate with BCA-USA to ensure a comprehensive and effective implementation of its multiple projects in Bali. My office prepares reports and presentations about BCA projects and also identifies potential risks and challenges that require escalation to the National Executive. I am the major official link between BCAUSA and Bali, Cameroon. I support and publicize all BCA-USA ventures in Cameroon with focus in Bali. I assess and make recommendations. I support visibility of formal projects and report about these. Another responsibility of my office is to work with various BCA partners to effectively update them on changes to BCA-USA processes and to work with multiple stake holders, sponsors and any others as directed.
that I am the current Construction Manager for the Multipurpose Center (CM MPC). In this capacity, I report to the Project Manager of that committee and not the SG.
What instigated you to accept being the representative of BCA in Cameroon? I love development oriented initiatives. I knew about BCAUSA in 2010 when I just arrived Bali to start work on the Mungaka revival project. I was impressed with the organization’s projects, and the lives it was impacting. The masses /the average person on the streets of Bali had little or misguided knowledge about BCAUSA and its mission. BCA-USA does quite a lot for our community and I want to thank you all and also encourage you to continue regardless the challenges you may face. The theme of this year’s convention says it all. I accepted this honour because I share in the vision BCA has. I am on the ground and can bring in my experience and knowledge to explain BCA’s objectives to our people. I knew I could represent you Who do you report to in BCA? As the BCA-USA despite the challenges. I equally want to think BCA Representative in Cameroon, I report directly to the saw that I had some value to add to your association. Secretary General (SG) and copy the President. DOWN MEMORY LANE, CULTURAL NIGHT 2014
By Ni Charlie Tamon (Chair of Culture Committee 2012 – 2014) Predominantly, 6pm on BCA-USA Cultural Nights would showcase elegant sons, daughters and friends of Bali parading the surrounding of the convention event hall, taking pictures and admiring different fabrics and styles of the traditional regalia. Cultural Night 2014 in Herndon Virginia was quite unique in every aspect of it this time around because there was a special guest in the country, His Royal Highness Senator Fon Doh Gahnyonga III. Once the news of his presence and ultimate arrival at the Dulles Airport was made, regular conventioneers could hardly find their regular corners or hangouts they used to have. The crowd was more than anyone could imagine and no more to self-admire but to show the world that he or she is part and parcel of this great Fon and people. On that night, a lot was going on within the hotel. While the Fon was granting last minute audiences to some traditional dignitaries and administrative guests, the Bali sons and daughters in the United States were all well dressed up and instead of waiting on the hallways, went directly to the main hall where they knew space would obviously be a problem and so, early birds would benefit better viewing and participation position.
58
BALI CULTURAL ASSOCIATION - USA
Delegations trailed into the hall with the notable presence of a powerful delegation from the Egbe ethnic group in the South West province of Cameroon, led by their chief and shortly followed by His Royal Highness Tchio Maurice of Bamendjo West province, coming all the way from Cameroon. Then came His Royal Highness the Fon of Bali surrounded by his notables and the national president of BCA-USA, moving in to the royal sound of Danga. It was clear it was time for activities to take off. The entrance lasted a little over fifteen minutes as everyone in the hall was just so happy to be a part of such a memorable experience of cultural excellence. It appeared as if there had been a chorographic rehearsal of every move as the MCs for the night, Ni Emmanuel Titanji and Ni Dohkea Gadinga echoed praised and traditional salutes to the Fon. The activities of the night included the official installation of the National executive of BCA-USA, elected one day prior to the event, a wide variety of traditional dances, dance competitions, special presentation by BCA kids, dance presentation by the Bikom people of Boyo Division, and Cameroonians who were also special guest to the event and a presentation by a renowned musician, son of Bali, Ni Eric Wallah.
