Spend two full days in the evocative rock-cut city of Petra

10 Days From £3,595pp Departing March & October 2021 Activity Level

Nothing can prepare a visitor for the experience of Petra. The scale, the colours and the grandeur are simply overwhelming. Lively, cosmopolitan and rich, with goods from every corner of the known world, ancient Petra was a truly extraordinary city. Its streets were swathed in a fusion of Nabataean and Classical architecture — elaborate tombs, colonnaded streets and temples carved into rose-red rock. What’s more, there will also be two full days in Petra, which is more than what’s offered by many other tour operators. One day there is undeniably great, but two will treat you to a more immersive encounter – exploring everything from iconic sites like the Treasury to picturesque climbs (optional, but well worth the time) that reach the Nabatean ‘Monastery’ and ‘High Place’.

Petra’s tombs and temples, however, are only a fraction of Jordan’s story. On this tour, we will explore traces of biblical tribes, Roman legions, Christian crusaders and Islamic caliphates in this promised land of archaeology and fascinating history. Elsewhere, there will be a chance to experience weightlessness in the Dead Sea, we will discover Jerash with its 2nd century Hadrian’s Arch and we will spend time at the mighty crusader castle of Kerak, one of the largest in the Levantine region.

Tour Highlights • Visit Jerash, the best-preserved Roman town in the east, which is home to the Oval Plaza and the Corinthian columns of the Temple of Artemis • Spend two entire days in the evocative rock-cut city of Petra, an iconic and instantly recognisable site that needs no introduction • Admire the lunar-like desert scenery of Wadi Rum, immortalised on film in

‘Lawrence of Arabia’ and ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’, aboard a fleet of 4x4s • Discover the mighty crusader castle at Kerak, built in the 12th century and one of the largest in the Levant region Guided by Nick Jackson A graduate of the Institute of Archaeology at UCL, Nick is an archaeologist and historian with over 20 years of excavation experience.
