Eatonville boys riding 3-game win streak
By Skip Smith Contributing writer
After being idle for nearly a week, the Eatonville Cruiser boys basketball team started back up on Friday night when they welcomed the Montesano Bulldogs to Rainier Connect Arena to open up 1A Evergreen Conference league play and promptly took care of the Bulldogs, 69-47.
Eatonville used a 10-0 run late in the first quarter to pull ahead by 15 points at 24-9 and distance themselves from the Bulldogs as the teams entered the second frame. That 10-0 run would be the key to their victory.
The final three quarters were played very close.
After trailing by 17 points at the half, Montesano made a late charge to open up the fourth quarter by putting together a 7-0 run to pull within 13, but the Cruisers quickly shut that down. They went on another 10-0 run

The Eatonville School Board approved Lucy Fountain as its new interim superintendent at its Jan. 4 meeting.
“Lucy retired from Eatonville School District in 2011,” Board chair Paulette Gilliardi said in a news release. “She served in the district as a teacher, coach, principal (19 years) and director of curriculum instruction and assessment (13 years). She holds a BA and a Master’s in Educational Administration from the University of Washington. However, Lucy has really never left the district.
“She worked on several projects for superintendents Stewart and Bahr to include the teacher mentor program currently in place, substituted for both teachers and principals,

to squash the Bulldogs’ hopes of a comeback, and Eatonville wrapped up the 69-47 victory.
The Cruisers were active on the glass, pulling down 32 rebounds.
“Rebounding has been the one area that just hadn’t quite clicked for us over our non-league schedule,” coach TJ Cotterill said.
“We knew Montesano would play hard, and they would play physical, so it certainly continued to be an emphasis for us tonight. Shay (Brannon) and Kyle (Cox) really got after it on the glass tonight.”
Cotterill also mentioned the team’s free throw shooting after they shot an abysmal 27-for-56 (48 percent) in their previous three games. They were 11-for-14 from the line in this game.
“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t lose sleep with us going 13-for-32 from the free-throw line in our first game in Alaska,” Cotterill said. “We’re certainly much better at the line than that, and tonight showed that.”
Shay Brannon led the Cruisers with 22 points. Griffin Clevenger led the Cruisers with seven steals and made a difference on defense.
RAINIER’S STREAK STOPPED
The Cruisers finished off the week traveling to Rainier to take on the Rainier Mountaineers (73) in a non-league affair.
The Rainiers were riding a five-game winning streak, and the Cruisers wanted to extend their own streak.
The Cruisers snapped the Mountaineers’ streak and extended their own to three games with a 69-62 victory.
After trailing by eight points at the half, the Cruisers made some adjustments at halftime and stormed back in the third period to trail by one, 44-43.
“We did have to make some halftime adjustments: capitalize

Savvy Senior: A checklist of what to do when a loved one dies
Dear Savvy Senior, What steps need to be taken a er a loved one dies? My 71-year-old uncle, who’s divorced with no children, has terminal cancer. He’s asked me to take care of his a airs, so I would like to nd out what I need to do a er he passes away.
— Unsure Nephew
Dear Unsure,
I’m very sorry to hear about your uncle. e death of a loved of can bring about a host of di erent tasks and responsibilities. Here’s a list of some things you can do now, and a er his death, that can help keep a sad event from becoming even more di cult.
BEFORE DEATH OCCURS
ere are several tasks you can do now while your uncle is still living that will make things easier for you a er he dies.
For starters, nd out where he keeps all his important papers like his trust and/or will (also make sure it’s updated), birth certi cate, Social Security information, life-insurance policies, military discharge papers, nancial documents, key or combination to a safe deposit box or a home safe. Also make a list of his digital assets (including usernames and passwords) like his email account, online banking accounts, social media accounts, etc.
If your uncle doesn’t have an advanced directive, help him make one (see CaringInfo.org for free state-speci c forms and instructions). An advanced directive includes a living will that speci es his end-of-life medical treatments and
appoints a health-care proxy to make medical decisions if he becomes incapacitated. In addition, you should also make a do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order. Your uncle’s doctor can help you with this. You should also pre-arrange his funeral, memorial service and burial or cremation.
IMMEDIATELY AFTER DEATH
Once your uncle dies, you’ll need to get a legal pronouncement of death. If no doctor is present, you’ll need to contact someone to do this. If he dies at home under hospice care, call the hospice nurse, who can declare his death and help facilitate the transport of the body.
If he dies at home without hospice care, call your uncle’s doctor. You’ll then need to call the funeral home, mortuary or crematorium to pick up the body. If your uncle is an organ or tissue donor, contact the funeral home or the county coroner immediately.
WITHIN A FEW DAYS
If funeral plans were not pre-arranged, you’ll need to make arrangements and prepare an obituary. If your uncle was in the military or
belonged to a fraternal or religious group, you should contact those organizations too, because they may have burial bene ts or conduct funeral services.
You should also notify family members, close friends and his employer if he was still working, and make sure his home is secured.
UP TO 10 DAYS LATER
To wind down your uncle’s nancial a airs, you’ll need to get multiple copies of his death certi cate, which are typically ordered by the funeral home.
If you’re the executor of your uncle’s estate, take his will to the appropriate county or city o ce to have it accepted for probate. And open a bank account for your uncle’s estate to pay bills, including taxes, funeral costs, etc.
You also need to contact your uncle’s estate attorney if he has one; tax preparer to see if estate or nal income taxes should be led; nancial advisor for information on nancial holdings; life insurance agent to get claim forms; his bank to locate and close accounts; and Social Security, the VA (if he’s a veteran) and other agencies that provided bene ts in order to stop payments.
You should also cancel his credit cards, delete or memorialize his social media accounts and, if relevant, stop household services like utilities, mail, etc. His home and personal belongings will also need to be dealt with in the coming weeks

Gluten-free bagels for breakfast — or anytime
Courtesy Metro Creative Connection
A warm bagel for breakfast or brunch can be a real treat. Bagels can be slathered in butter or cream cheese, or topped with lox. Some people even enjoy bagels as the “bread” in breakfast sandwiches or as hearty sandwiches lled with cold cuts later in the day.
Individuals who have to avoid gluten may miss the delicious, authentic taste of bagels. When cravings crop up, these “Everything Bagels” from “Danielle Walker's Eat What You Love” (Ten Speed Press) are the ideal substitute.
EVERYTHING BAGELS
Makes 6
• ½ cup full-fat coconut milk
• 2 tablespoons nely ground golden axseeds
• 1 tablespoon light-colored raw honey
• 1 ½ tablespoons gluten-free active dry yeast
• 4 eggs
• ¼ cup melted ghee or virgin coconut oil
• 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
• 1 ½ cups arrowroot powder
• 1/3 cup coconut our
• 1 ½ teaspoons grain-free baking powder
• 1 teaspoon ne sea salt
EVERYTHING SEASONING
• 1 teaspoon poppy seeds
• 1 teaspoon dried minced garlic
• 1 teaspoon dried minced
onion
• ½ teaspoon white sesame seeds
• ½ teaspoon black sesame seeds
• ½ teaspoon coarse sea salt
1. Pour the coconut milk into a small saucepan and heat it over low heat to 110 F. Place the warmed coconut milk, the axseeds, honey, and yeast in the bowl of a stand mixer tted with the beater attachment and mix on low speed to combine. Let the mixture sit for 4 to 5 minutes, until it begins to foam.
2. Add the eggs, ghee, and vinegar to the bowl and mix on medium speed to combine. Add the arrowroot, coconut our, baking powder, and salt and mix again until fully incorporated. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let it sit for 1 hour at room temperature.
3. To make the everything seasoning, combine all of the ingredients in a small bowl and stir to combine.
4. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Scoop the batter into a 31⁄2-inch silicone doughnut pan, lling each cavity two-thirds full. Sprinkle the tops with the seasoning and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the bagels are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool the bagels in the pan on a wire rack for 20 minutes, then remove them from the pan and cool completely on the rack.
5. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 1 week, or in the freezer for 6 months.

better on the looks we were getting and run their shooters o the three-point line,” Cotterill said. “We didn’t panic. We talked before the game about how we’d have to withstand their runs and not get too high when we make ours. We just kept playing with a next-right-play mentality.”
Despite the Rainiers’ hot start, the Cruisers ended the game a bit hotter, dropping 26 points in the nal quarter and hitting 8-9 from the free-throw line in the quarter to secure the victory.
Walker Bruun scored a career-high 29 points, and the Cruisers shot 83 percent from the foul line as a team.
“Walker played fantastic, fearlessly attacking the basket, playing patient in the paint, and shooting with con dence,” Cotterill said. “When he’s shooting with space and playing with the green light, we’re constantly reinforcing that he has, he is so dangerous, and his ability to attack the paint opens up so much for everybody else. He’s going to continue to be an explosive player heading into the rest of league play.”

Former AG makes case against state's capital gains income tax
By Brett Davis e Center Square
Former Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna detailed the legal case against the state’s new capital gains income tax during a recent online seminar put on by the free market Washington Policy Center think tank.
McKenna, one of the lead attorneys in the case against the tax, previewed some of the legal issues the state Supreme Court will consider when oral arguments start on Jan. 26.
In 2021, the Legislature passed and Gov. Jay Inslee signed into law a capital gains income tax aimed at the state’s wealthiest residents. e measure adds a 7 percent tax on capital gains above $250,000 a year, such as pro ts from stocks or business sales.
On March 1, 2022, Douglas County Superior Court Judge Brian Huber ruled the tax was “properly characterized as an income tax … rather than as an excise tax as argued by the State” and struck it down. e state constitution’s uniformity clause does not allow income to be taxed at di erent rates.
Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson asked the state Supreme Court to take up the case on appeal, with the high court agreeing to do so.
e Supreme Court has since given the okay for the state Department of Revenue to administer and collect the tax in the meantime.
“ e incidents of the tax in this case — as in prior cases — is the generation of a net gain or a net income, which is then taxable,”
McKenna explained Wednesday in pushing back against the notion the capital gains tax is an excise tax, or a tax imposed on the sale of speci c goods or services. “ at tells us that the tax is not really concerned about exercising a privilege like transferring real estate or handing down an estate. All it’s really concerned about is whether or not you’ve generated a net income from the sale or transfer of long-term capital assets.”
e prior cases McKenna referred to are Supreme Court decisions he said backed up his claim — and the basis for Huber’s ruling — that income is property and property has to be taxed uniformly:
• In the 1933 case of Culliton v. Chase, the justices invalidated a voter-approved progressive income tax meant to pay for education.
• In the 1936 case of Jensen v. Henneford, the justices ruled that a state tax “on the privilege of receiving income” violated state uniformity requirements.
• In the 1951 case of Power, Inc. v. Huntley, the court said, “ e character of a tax is determined by its incidents, not by its name.”
