Lady Cruisers dominate against Tenino By Skip Smith

RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY A celebration of Eatonville School District’s newly remodeled Special Education Support Center took place last week. Last spring it was determined that the district needed to expand the facility footprint to house the growing special education population. The cost of a new portable caused then Interim Supt, Lucy Fountain to search for another solution. She and Maintenance Supervisor, Brandon Jumper chose to move a double portable with bathroom capabilities to a site that could be shared near EES and EMS. The very talented maintenance

team have brought this facility to a “like-new” status. Whereas the previous classroom did not have easily accessible restrooms and running water and was not in close proximity to the playground or cafeteria, the new space has all of this as well as a brighter, welcoming setting. It cost the district about $170,000 to relocate the portable from the high school, connect it, and refurbish it for use. The district was able to save $150,000-$200,000 on the project. Impact fees were used to pay for this project.

In a dominating performance before the snowfall blanketed the area, the Eatonville Lady Cruisers showcased their prowess on Tuesday, Jan. 9, in a league game against the Tenino Beavers. The Cruisers left no room for doubt as they clinched a resounding 54-18 victory, leading by as much as 39 in the final quarter. The early momentum for the Lady Cruisers was set by Bailey Andersen, who contributed 11 first-quarter points. This stellar performance helped Eatonville establish a commanding 19-5 lead at the end of the opening quarter. The Beavers, however, displayed defensive resilience in the second quarter, limiting the Cruiser offense to only 6 points. Lillian Bickford managed to score 4 of those points, and the Beavers outscored Eatonville 7-6 in the quarter, heading into halftime with the Cruisers maintaining a 13-point lead. Despite Tenino's efforts to stay in the game, the third quarter proved decisive as the Lady Cruiser offense embarked on an impressive 18-0 run. This run propelled them to a 30-point lead heading into the final quarter, firmly establishing their dominance. The fourth quarter mirrored the previous ones, with Eatonville extending their lead to 39 points before securing the victory with a final score of 54-18. SPORTS Page 5Æ

Savvy Senior: Are you at risk of developing glaucoma?

D

ear Savvy Senior, What can you tell me about the eye disease glaucoma? My older brother was recently diagnosed with it and lost some of his vision, but never had a clue anything was wrong. Could I be at risk too? Stressed Sibling Dear Stressed, Yes! Having an immediate family member with glaucoma significantly increases your risks of developing it, but there are other risk factors you need to be aware of too. Here’s what you should know. WHAT IS GLAUCOMA? Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that can damage the optic nerve and cause vision loss and blindness if it’s not treated. This typically happens because the fluids in the eye don’t drain properly, causing increased pressure in the eyeball. But the scary thing about glaucoma is that with no early warning signs or pain, most people that have it don’t realize it until their vision begins to deteriorate. While there are two main types of glaucoma, the most common form that typically affects older adults is called open-angle glaucoma. This disease develops very slowly when the eye’s drainage canals become clogged over time, leading to blind spots in the peripheral or side vision. By the time you notice it,

Adobe Stock Image the permanent damage is already done. ARE YOU AT RISK? It’s estimated that more than 3 million Americans have glaucoma today, but that number is expected to surge to more than 6.3 million by 2050. If you answer “yes” to any of the following questions, you’re at increased risk of developing it. • Are you African American, Hispanic/Latino American or Asian American? • Are you over age 60? • Do you have an immediate

family member with glaucoma? • Do you have diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, migraines or have extreme nearsightedness or farsightedness? • Have you had a past eye injury? • Have you used corticosteroids (for example, eye drops, pills, inhalers, and creams) for long periods of time? WHAT TO DO Early detection is the key to guarding against glaucoma. So, if you’re age 40 or older and have any of the previously mentioned

risk factors, especially if you’re African American, you need to get a comprehensive eye examination every 18 to 24 months. Or, if you notice some loss of peripheral vision, get to the eye doctor right away. If you’re a Medicare beneficiary, annual eye examinations are covered for those at high risk for glaucoma. Or if you don’t have vision coverage, contact EyeCare America, a national public service program that provides free glaucoma eye exams through a pool of more than 4,600 volunteer ophthalmologists. Visit AAO.org/ eyecare-america or call 877-8876327 to learn more. While there’s currently no cure for glaucoma, most cases can be treated with prescription eye drops, which reduce eye pressure and can prevent further vision loss. It cannot, however, restore vision already lost from glaucoma. If eye drops don’t work, your doctor may recommend oral medication, laser treatments, incisional surgery or a combination of these methods. For more information on glaucoma, visit the National Eye Institute at NEI.nih.gov, and the Glaucoma Research Foundation at Glaucoma.org. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

Richard Arthur “Pete” Suver, age 87, of Yelm, Washington passed away on December 30th, 2023. He is reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife of nearly 62 years, Janice Laurene Boren Suver, daughter Susan, and his parents Elmer William Suver and Marie Sleet Suver. He is survived by his three sons, Pete (wife Cindy), Pat (wife Lisa), and Andy (wife Sheiska), and 8 grandchildren. Pete was born in Tacoma on March 18th, 1936, and graduated from St. Martin’s High School in 1954. He enlisted in the U.S. Army upon graduation and regarded his time in the service as formative and meaningful, grateful for the opportunity to travel and to serve his country. Upon his return home, he met Janice and began his career as a heavy equipment operator. One career highlight was Pete’s work in the rebuilding of the Hood Canal Bridge in the early 1980s. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 612 for more than 60 years. In Ashford, Washington, he and Janice established both the Suver General Store and their growing household. Busy family life with their four children consisted of camping at Huckleberry and Berry Creek, trips to the drive-in movie theater, and everyone pitching in to run the store. Pete’s devotion to his family, the Catholic Church, his country, and his union was steadfast. Pete will be remembered for his many ambitious DIY projects, charitable nature, and fierce bear hugs. His family would like to extend their gratitude for the care he received at The Cottages of Lacey once he was no longer able to live alone, and for the medical attention he received at Providence St. Peter’s Hospital at the end of his life. A funeral Mass was held at Saint Columban Catholic Church in Yelm on Tuesday, January 16th. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Knights of Columbus.

Bill would allow Washington Legislature to ban political candidates By TJ Martineli The Center Square

A Washington bill introduced this session would give the state Legislature and the Secretary of State the power to ban a political candidate from appearing on a ballot in the state. House Bill 2150, sponsored by Rep. Kristine Reeves, D-Federal Way, sets up a process by which the Legislature and SOS can disqualify a candidate based on their interpretation of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits anyone from running for office who previously “shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same (United States), or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.” However, the bill also considers a candidate to be disqualified “who has been convicted of, or charged with and not yet acquitted of, any state or federal crime arising from actions taken while serving as a state or federal officer, whether or not those actions were taken in the course of official duties.” This section would be interpreted in conformity “with relevant court decisions interpreting that section.” If passed, the bill could allow the Legislature to remove former President Donald Trump, who is running for the office again and is currently facing several criminal charges though none regarding insurrection. The bill would require political candidates to sign an oath created

by SOS attesting that they are eligible to run. The Legislature would authorized to send a resolution to SOS by a simple majority vote requesting that a candidate be removed from the ballot and must “clearly state the grounds on which the legislature believes the candidate is or may be ineligible, citing the relevant provision or provisions of law.” The SOS would then be able to issue an order removing the candidate, or deny the request. However, the Legislature would still have the authority to remove a candidate by a two-thirds vote. A political candidate would be able to appeal the decision in Thurston County Superior Court. When asked for comment on the bill, SOS Deputy Director of External Affairs Derrick Nunnally wrote that the proposal would constitute a significant expansion of their responsibilities, as "it would require the Secretary of State to move from an administrative role in elections to a determinative one, since there would be a new responsibility to decide the eligibility of everyone who files for a state or federal office." According to Nunnally, SOS would have to determine the eligibility for 375 elected offices. Additionally, he noted that the timeframe between filing dates and printing deadlines for ballots would "present a significant challenge to making those eligibility determinations – especially if any substantial degree of research is involved."

Charter school supporters again asking Washington lawmakers for equal funding By Carleen Johnson The Center Square

Washington’s 18 public charter schools say they're getting a raw deal when it comes to education funding. That’s the argument behind legislation to allow charter schools access to the same grant programs that traditional public schools receive. The measure would also offer enrichment funds to charter schools if voters in that district approve a local levy. Charters are currently excluded from levy equalization dollars. Sen. Mark Mullet, D-Issaquah, is the prime sponsor of Senate Bill 5809. During a public hearing Wednesday on the bill, Marcus Harden with Why Not You Academy, a charter high school in Des Moines, testified in support of the legislation. “We want to do what’s best for all, and we know charter schools serve more students from the global majority, more diverse students and those with special needs,” he said. “What I know for sure, public means public and it means for all.” Rochelle Jeffries is a junior at Why Not You Academy. “As a high achieving AfricanAmerican young woman, I struggled with finding a school that valued my desired path for learning, which is hands on," she said. "They create a personalized learning plan for each student.”

She continued, “Why Not You needs additional resources and not having consistent resources makes it very difficult for all charter schools.” Speaking against the bill was Julie Salvi from the Washington Education Association, saying “WEA has a long-standing position in opposition to specialized funding streams for charter schools.” WEA lobbied against the establishment of charter schools for many years until voters passed an initiative to allow a limited number of charter schools to open. WEA later filed lawsuits trying to shut them down. Those efforts were not successful. Washington's 18 public charter schools serve more than 5,200 students, according to the Washington Charter Schools Association, with 62% of students identifying as "Global Majority," a collective term for anyone who is non-white. Forty-two percent of charter school teachers also identify as being from the "Global Majority," whereas that figure is 13% in traditional public schools statewide. “Charter schools have always been underfunded and these schools are taking on some of the most challenging students, with disabilities and other special education needs, they are handling these kids and doing it effectively and we ought to be funding them properly," Sen. John Braun, R-Centralia, told The Center Square. There was no committee vote on the bill following public testimony.
