Lady Cruisers dominate with three consecutive victories By Skip Smith

The Eatonville Lady Cruiser basketball team maintained their winning momentum this past week, securing victories over Rochester, Elma, and Hoquiam. Currently, they find themselves in the midst of a four-game winning streak, marking their longest stretch of success this season. In a commanding

performance on Jan. 15, the Cruisers secured a resounding 58-40 victory over Rochester at Rainier Connect Arena in Eatonville. The game saw Eatonville taking control early, establishing a 9-point lead after the first quarter, thanks in large part to Bailey Andersen's impressive 14-point scoring outburst. The Cruisers continued to build on their lead, heading into halftime with a comfortable 30-18

advantage. The third quarter showcased Eatonville's teamwork, as six different players contributed to the scoring effort. Ryan Stammen led the way in the quarter with 5 points, helping the Cruisers extend their lead to a commanding 49-28 going into the final quarter. The Warriors outscored the Cruisers 12-9 in the last quarter,

The Eatonville boys' basketball team endured a challenging week as they suffered defeats in both of their 1A Evergreen League games. The week started with high hopes as the Cruisers aimed to break their three-game losing streak. Facing the Elma Eagles on Jan. 16, at Rainier Connect Arena, Eatonville struggled early on. The Eagles would put the game away early in the 1st quarter by holding the Cruisers to single digits while dropping 24 points to take a 16 point lead, 24-8 into the 2nd frame. Elma continued their dominance in the second quarter, outscoring Eatonville 16-9 and extending their lead to 23 points by halftime, with the score standing at 40-17. Despite Eatonville's efforts in the third quarter, Elma maintained a substantial lead, scoring 26 points and widening the gap to 36, finishing the quarter at 66-30. The final quarter saw Elma's defense sink their claws into the Cruisers shutting out them out while adding 12 points to their own tally, resulting in a convincing 78-30 victory for the Eagles. Hunter Klumpar led Eatonville with 14 points. Undeterred, the Cruisers embarked on a trip to the Grays Harbor area to face the Hoquiam Grizzlies on Jan. 20. The Grizzlies wouldn’t mess around and would grab the lead with the first bucket of the game and never look back. Hoquiam started the game on a 7-0 run and then after an Amari Samuel 3 pointer, the Grizzlies would use a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 9 points and lead 25-14 after one quarter of play. 2 Savvy Senior: What you need to know about Medicare spouse coverage

ear Savvy Senior, Are spouses who have not worked outside the home eligible for Medicare benefits? I have worked most of my adult life, but my wife has been a mother and homemaker since we got married and hasn’t held an income-producing job since she was in college. Will she be eligible for Medicare? Searching Spouse Dear Searching, There are many couples in your situation when it comes to applying for Medicare. The answer generally is yes, your spouse can qualify for Medicare on your work record. Here’s how it works. MEDICARE REQUIREMENTS Medicare, the government health insurance program for older adults, covers around 60 million Americans age 65 and older, as well as those younger that have a qualifying disability or have End-Stage Renal Disease. To be eligible, you must have worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years to qualify for premium-free Medicare Part A hospital coverage when you turn 65. If you qualify, then your nonworking spouse will qualify too, based on your work record when she turns 65. Divorced spouses are also eligible if they were married at least 10

she will need health insurance until she turns 65 and becomes eligible for Medicare. This may be through the Health Insurance Marketplace (see healthcare.gov), or if you’re still working, through COBRA (see dol. gov/general/topic/health-plans/ cobra).

Adobe Stock Image years and are single, as are surviving spouses who are single and who were married for at least nine months before their spouse died. In addition to Part A, both you and your spouse would also qualify for Medicare Part B, which covers doctor’s visits and other outpatient services, but requires a monthly premium. The premium for Part B beneficiaries in 2024 is $174.70 per month per person. Couples filing jointly with in-comes over $206,000 per year pay even more. There are also a number of other caveats you should know about depending on your wife’s age. OLDER SPOUSES If your wife is older than you, she can qualify for Medicare on your work record at age 65, even if you’re not getting Medicare yourself, but you must be at least 62 years old.

You also must have been married for at least one year for your wife to apply for Medicare on your work record. If you are still working and your wife is covered by your employer’s health insurance, she may want to enroll only in the premium-free Medicare Part A until you retire, or your employer cover-age ends. Part B – along with its premium – can be added later without penalty as long as your em-ployer’s group health plan is your “primary coverage.” Check with your employers’ human re-sources department to find out about this. (Note: If your wife is funding a health savings account, she may not want to take Part A because she can’t make contributions after she enrolls). YOUNGER SPOUSES If your wife is younger than you,

OTHER MEDICARE CHOICES In addition to Medicare Part A and B, when you and your wife become Medicare eligible, each of you will also need to enroll in a Part D prescription drug plan if you don’t have credible drug coverage from your employer or union. And, you may want to purchase a Medicare supplemental (Medigap) policy too, to help pay for things that aren’t covered by Medicare like copayments, co-insurance and deductibles. Or, you may want to consider an all-in-one Medicare Advantage plan. For more information on Medicare choices and enrollment rules visit Medicare.gov or call 800-633-4227. You can also get help through your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (see shiphelp. org), which provides free Medicare counseling. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Bipartisan bill seeks to boost payments for crops damaged by deer and elk By Randy Bracht The Center Square

Farmers in Washington who experience damage to commercial crops caused by deer and elk could see an increase in state payments for their losses. On Thursday, the state Senate’s Committee on Agriculture, Water, Natural Resources and Parks advanced Senate Bill 5784, sponsored by Sen. Kevin Van De Wege, D-Lake Sutherland. The bill has been referred to the Senate Ways and Means Committee for consideration. “This bill simply updates the mitigation to reflect the modern levels of loss and, at the same time, prioritize the needs of small farmers,” Van De Wege said in a press release. The compensation program was created in 1947 to support the farming industry and revenues it provides to the state, but its “outdated provisions” no longer accurately reflect “the losses suffered by farmers,” he said. As proposed, SB 5784 would increase the state program’s current statutory limit from $150,000 annually to $420,000 for claims and damages awarded to farmers. To pay for the increase, said Van De Wege, the state’s general fund allocation would be raised from $30,000 to $300,000 per year. That’s in addition to the state’s existing Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Fund allotment of $120,000, which would not change, he said. Along with increasing the fund size,

the measure would raise the individual claim amount from $10,000 to $30,000, with a maximum appeal award also capped at $30,000. Van De Wege said the bill was amended in committee to also establish a three-year pilot program for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife to collar and monitor elk in south-central Washington and report results to the Legislature by Dec. 1, 2027. Another committee change prioritizes payment of commercial crop damage claims based on the highest percent of loss compared to gross sales. Along with Van De Wege, the bill has bipartisan sponsorship from fellow Democratic Senators Mark Mullet and T’wina Nobles and Republicans Ron Muzzall, Keith Wagoner, and Judy Warnick. WDFW, which requested the measure, has information about filing damage claims on its website. When practical, the agency works with landowners and tenants to control game damage without killing the animals, in part to increase the harvest of damage-causing animals in hunting seasons. The state Fish and Wildlife Commission may authorize special hunts to reduce damage from wildlife if there are recurring complaints. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, foraging deer and elk can trample or pull seedlings out of the ground, splinter woody stems, and strip bark from twigs and trees.

Erica Browne Grivas Sunflowers are often bred now to have little to no pollen to be tidier cut flowers, but pollen can help protect bees from mites. I used to buy any sunflower that took my fancy in a catalog. All the better if a variety was early and/or multiple branching (more flowers, sooner), or pollenless (less mess when used in bouquets). All these benefits– better display, productivity, and harvest – were for me. A SUNFLOWER SUPERPOWER I recently read about 2023 studies saying sunflower pollen helps protect bees (both honeybees and bumblebees) from two different mites – serious contributors to bee decline. (Interestingly, other members of the sunflower family, including dandelions, with similar spike- shaped pollen, also had a

lesser effect.) However, pollen is intentionally bred out of some ornamental varieties to appeal to the cut-flower industry – one article estimated 90% of the cut-flower sunflowers sold were pollenless varieties. So now if the catalog doesn’t specify a variety produces pollen, I’m crosschecking for pollen references from other online sources. Here's your sunflower cheat sheet: some lovely varieties known for their pollen are ‘Lemon Queen,’ ‘Velvet Queen,’ ‘Autumn Beauty,’ and ‘Sonja.’ WHO DOES IT HELP? Washington bill would protect signature gatherers from harassment By TJ Martinell The Center Square

A Washington state bill would create a “buffer zone” between signature gatherers and individuals opposed to the initiatives or referendums, in an effort to prevent conflicts between the two groups. Last year, Let’s Go Washington collected signatures for six ballot initiatives, some of which have already been certified for the November ballot. However, the organization has accused several groups of interfering and harassing their signature gatherers to the point where law enforcement was called to the locations. Opponents of the initiatives set up a “hotline” where people could report signature gathering locations as well as physical descriptions of the signature gatherers. Sponsored by Rep. Greg Cheney, R-Battle Ground, House Bill 2205 would set up a 25-foot physical barrier around people collecting signatures in which people are prohibited from interfering. The bill would also prohibit individuals from using electronic devices to make it too loud for individuals in that buffer zone to be heard. Speaking at a Wednesday public hearing in the House State Government & Tribal Relations Committee, Cheney told colleagues that “the purpose of the bill is to give some breathing space for folks who are both exercising their First Amendment rights. Among the bill’s supporters is Secretary of State Steve Hobbs. SOS Legislative Director Brian Hatfield told the committee that “it’s important that everyone on any side of any issue should be protected and have their rights. I know this past summer, the folks gathering signatures tended to be from the right side of the political spectrum, but next summer it could be folks from the left side. It should be something that’s fair for everyone.” Also testifying in favor was independent podcaster and journalist Brandi Kruse, GRIVAS from Page 4Æ going out of their way to identify benefits for pollinators, perhaps specifying bird, bee, or butterfly. Some of the best will explain specific beneficials a plant supports, like sweat bees, or Monarch butterflies. I found myself highlighting the ones that attracted more than one category, though it’s not a dealbreaker if it only supports one. Finding native plant species is a great start to supporting your local ecosystem. After all, your neighborhood fauna evolved with its flora. Note here we’re talking about locally native to reap the most local benefit for pollinators which feed on unique plants. There are generalist pollinators which will feed and nest

who helped gather signatures for the Let's Go Washington initiatives last year. She told the committee that “this bill is really simply about just aligning the way we protect all facets of the democratic process.” “Frankly it’s a little disappointing that bills like this are necessary,” she added. “There is some disagreement about the value of our initiative process. As long as it exists it’s our duty to protect it and it’s our collective duty to speak up.” The bill drew indirect critics from several grocery store associations that weren’t opposed to the bill itself but argued that greater legal clarification around the legal use of their storefronts for signature gathering is also needed. According to Charlie Brown testifying on behalf of Fred Meyer, several stores had signature gatherers on their premises without their permission and refused to leave when asked. However, he said law enforcement refused to trespass those individuals due to ambiguity over whether they constitute a public space like a mall. “Frankly….our customers and our staff are having their peaceable enjoyment of going and buying food being interrupted,” he said. “We are not a public place.” Kathy Sakahara with the Northwest Progressive Institute argued that the bill “prohibits speech” for opponents of an initiative or referendum. “The bill only refers to people collecting signatures,” she said. “There’s another way to participate in the process, and that is to share with someone who is considering signing a petition what I believe to be the truth, what someone believes to be true.” She added that elections, which have a similar type of buffer zone for voters, is “completed unrelated. It does not say if you’re paid by a billionaire to do something you can say whatever you’re but if you’re motivated only by compassion and love and concern for your fellow human beings, you can’t speak at all.” No further action is scheduled for HB 2205.

on multiple plants, so you can still feed some pollinators while growing non-native. The mint family (Lamiaceae) and the aster family (Asteraceae) have many examples of these. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS: To reduce my dependence on my water hoses, I will be rationing out the sections of the garden I’m willing to give supplemental water in the summer. This includes all container plants and those planted in the last year or two, as well as tomatoes and dahlias. Because of all those containers, new plants should be drought-tolerant once established, and need little in the way of supplemental organic matter or fertilizer.

FAMILY NIGHTS

Courtesy Eatonville School District has been focusing on Reading and Math. The three elementary schools provide a boost for families through Reading and Math Family Nights. These events are interactive and enable parents to be partners during the learning process. Last week Eatonville Elementary hosted its Reading Night and in the fall Columbia Crest hosted a Family Math Night. Families are encouraged to take advantage of the remaining Family Nights: ● EES Math Night will be held in April (date to be determined) ● CCA: Reading Night will be held on March 7 at 5 p.m. ● WES: Reading Night will be held on February 28 at 6 p.m. and Math Night will be held on March 20 at 5 p.m. So far more than 500 parents and students have joined in the fun that happens as we all work together to encourage learning.

So, monardas may have to wait for me, but zinnias, yarrows, poppies and calendulas are fairly droughtadapted. SO HERE’S MY NEW CHECKLIST: Does it help feed beneficial insects or pollinators? Bonus points for a Northwest native. Maybe one bonus point for being native to the U.S. More bonus-points for being open-pollinated, so I can save the seed for next year, versus an F1 hybrid which will not “come true”. Bonus points if it will self-sow. THINGS THAT COULD STRIKE IT OUT OF CONTENTION: Does it require extra water or

fertilizer? Is it poisonous? After these are satisfied, I’ll look for beauty, fragrance, height, productivity, and ease of growing, which will create a beautiful garden reaping benefits this year and for many more to come. For purposes of this notice, Joshua Glen Davis is a putative father under the laws in Indiana regarding adoption. This notice complies with IC 31-19-4-5 but does not exhaustively set forth a putative father’s legal obligations under the Indiana adoption statutes.
