Eatonville Cruiser Special Olympics Team clinches gold By Skip Smith
Contributing Writer
In a thrilling showcase of teamwork and skill, the Eatonville Cruiser Special Olympics team secured first place and a gold medal at the Southwest Region Sub-Regional Basketball event hosted at Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Olympia. The competition featured five teams battling it out in the team skills completion. The Cruisers' journey to victory began in the first round, where they dominated the Clark County Bear Cats with a 92-66 win, propelling them into the quarterfinals. Lady Cruisers bounce back strong By Skip Smith

The Lady Cruiser opened up their second half of the 1A Evergreen League play just as it started, with a match up with the Montesano Bulldogs. This time a shot at a league title was on the line. Unfortunately, the outcome this time mirrored the first encounter, with the Bulldogs emerging victorious, 58-39. The Cruisers would struggle in the first with turnovers. They would cough the ball up 10 times in the quarter allowing the Bulldogs to pull ahead. A 10-0 run by Montesano to end the quarter gave them a 19-7 lead heading into the second. Eatonville’s Lillian Bickford would get into foul trouble early in the half with four fouls, forcing Head Coach Deanna Andersen to sit her for most
of the second quarter. Montesano would continue to build on their lead, outscoring the Cruisers 13-5 to take a comfortable 32-12 lead into halftime. Eatonville would battle back in the third quarter behind Sara Smith’s 5 points to outscore the Bulldogs 1211 and trim the lead ever so slightly and trail 43-24 heading into the final quarter. Eatonville starters Ryan Stammen and Lillian Bickford would both foul out of the game in the first minute of the second half, hampering the Cruisers offensively. Ultimately, Smith and the Cruisers’ effort was not enough to bring Eatonville back as the fell 58-39. “We struggled with a few things, turning the ball over early was a big one,” Head Coach Deanna Andersen said. Bailey Andersen was held to her lowest output of the season with 9 points while Alayna Meyer contributed with 7, all in the second half. “We just need to refocus and win our final three games and earn that trip to the post season,” said Andersen. She was referring to the Southwestern Washington District 4 playoffs. The Cruisers are currently sitting in 2nd place in league and control their own destiny. If they win out, they will clinch second
place and the No. 2 seed to the district playoffs and will host their first round game. After that setback against Montesano, refocus is exactly what the Lady Cruisers did in their final game of the week, a rematch with the Tenino Beavers, a team that the Cruisers manhandled 54-18 earlier in the season. LETTER TO THE EDITOR WORDS FROM A CRUISER ALUMNI REGARDING THE LEVY AND THE IMPORTANCE OF ACTIVITIES I participated in several extracurricular activities in my time as a student at EHS, including both athletics and arts. I was on the tennis team, I participated on the state champion Knowledge Bowl team, and I participated in both drama and band. I know that my success both during my time in Eatonville and after it is owed a lot to my participation. In any career, there are moments where collaborative work and participation in a team is important, and in many careers, including mine, that is a major part of the job. I think any extracurricular teaches important skills related to collaboration, and the teams and clubs that I joined certainly did for me. In addition, my participation in band in middle (CCA and EMS) and high

school led to my participation in marching band during college at Oregon State. Joining a club or outside activity during college or during the first few years you are out on your own is not only a great way to meet people in a new community, it is also a great way to have an outlet outside of work and/or school. I would not have been as successful in college without participating in marching band and I never would have participated in marching band in college if I hadn't had the opportunity to do so at EHS. In addition, I had the opportunity to take on a leadership role in marching band, and that gave me lots of experiences and soft skills that have contributed to my success since, and that all started with the opportunity to participate in music throughout my time in Eatonville.

Battling adversity: Eatonville faces must-wins for playoff spot By Skip Smith
Contributing Writer
In a challenging week for the Eatonville Cruiser boys basketball team, the squad faced setbacks against the Montesano Bulldogs and the Tenino Beavers, leaving the team with a 6-11 overall record and a 0-6 standing in Evergreen League play. On Wednesday, the Cruisers lost 56-44 to the Montesano Bulldogs at Rainier Connect Arena. The game showcased a closely contested battle, with the lead changing hands 10 times. Griffin Clevenger's four points kept the Cruisers within reach facing a 9-6 first quarter deficit. The second quarter remained competitive, with Amari Samuel contributing five points. However, the Bulldogs outscored the Cruisers 15-13, establishing a 24-19 halftime lead Despite trading baskets in the third quarter, the Bulldogs used a couple of 6-0 runs and managed
Courtesy Annie Norman Eatonville's Griffin Clevenger shoots and scores over Tenino's Noah Schow in a game earlier in the season. to extend their lead to 13 points before the Cruisers finished out the quarter on a 5-0 run to cut into that lead, trailing by only eight points heading into the final quarter. Eatonville opened the 4th quarter with a 4-0 run, cutting the lead in half, but a late 10-0 surge by the Bulldogs sealed their victory. Hunter Klumpar
led the Cruisers with 13 points and 9 rebounds, while Clevenger adding 12 points. Turnovers plagued the team, with the Cruisers committing 25. Seeking redemption, the Cruisers traveled to face the Tenino Beavers at Brock Court but dropped a 59-38 game. Tenino dominated early with an 8-0 run. The second quarter witnessed
an 11-0 run by the Beavers, extending their lead to 17. Eatonville managed to cut the deficit to 12 at halftime, but the third quarter proved to be the dagger, with Tenino's 18-0 run expanding the lead to 30 points. In the final quarter, the Cruisers displayed a late offensive spark, but that 7-point advantage wasn’t enough to overcome the
Beavers, as the Cruisers fell 59-38. Clevenger led Eatonville with 11 points, and Klumpar contributed 10 points and 6 rebounds. Freshman Colton Herbrand, making his varsity debut, added two points and grabbed a couple of rebounds. Now standing at 6-11, the Cruisers face an uphill battle for post-season play. To secure a district playoff spot, they must win their remaining games against Hoquiam and Elma. Additionally, they need Hoquiam to lose to Montesano, creating a tie for the final playoff spot at 2 wins and 4 losses. League tiebreaker rules would then determine the fourth seed. Looking ahead, the Cruisers aim to regroup and celebrate Senior Night as they host the Hoquiam Grizzlies on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. (results were not available at press time). The regular season concludes on Friday, Feb. 2, with a matchup against the Elma Eagles at 7 p.m.
