Lady Cruisers fall short despite Andersen's milestone By Skip Smith | Contributing Writer
Despite a valiant effort that saw the Eatonville Cruisers rally from a double-digit deficit to tie the game, foul trouble and a late surge from the Seton Catholic Cougars sealed Eatonville's fate in a 70-57 loss this past Saturday night. The Cruisers, trailing early in the first quarter, suffered a setback when Bailey Andersen, their leading scorer, exited the game due to injury to her nose. This opened the door for the Cougars to orchestrate a 13-0 run. Despite Andersen's return late in the quarter, Seton Catholic maintained a lead of 21-14 after the first quarter. Eatonville found their footing in the second quarter, staging an impressive 11-0 run to knot the score at 34-34 going into halftime. However, foul trouble plagued the Cruisers in the third quarter, with Lillian Bickford fouling out midway through the quarter. Her presence down low forced the Cougars to rely on their outside

With Bickford out of the game, this allowed the Cougars to rely more on their post player, Riley Seymer, who scored most of her 24 points in the paint. Despite their efforts, Eatonville trailed 5349 heading into the final frame.
The final quarter proved to be the Cruisers' downfall, as poor shooting and a decisive 7-0 run from the Cougars dashed their hopes of a comeback. Despite the loss, Andersen achieved a personal milestone,
recording her 1,000th career point on a free throw in the fourth quarter. Andersen led the Cruisers with an impressive 24-point performance, including her 1,000th BASKETBALL Page 4Æ
Eatonville's Kasey Whitney claims regional title By Skip Smith | Contributing Writer
Eatonville High School wrestlers secured their place in the state tournament over the weekend. Hundreds of wrestlers battled it out looking to finish in the top 3 of their weight class to earn a trip to the state tournament, while a 4th place finish would send you to the state competition as an alternate. In the boys' division, competing at the 1A Regional Tournament held at Hoquiam High School, Eatonville wrestlers delivered commendable performances against tough competition. Kasey Whitney emerged as a standout, claiming the regional title in the 132lb weight class with a narrow 4-2 victory over Landon Fulton of
Castle Rock. This marked Whitney's third consecutive year qualifying for the state tournament. Joining Whitney on the podium were Mark Devera (113lb), Trey StaRosa (150lb), and Jacob Ostendorf (157lb), all securing 3rd place finishes, while Justen Koch (120lb) and Ethan Rogers (175lb) clinched 4th place spots. Despite the fierce competition, Eatonville managed to clinch 4th place overall out of the 11 teams competing. Meanwhile, in the girls' division, Eatonville's sole representative, Brooke Ostendorf, delivered a commendable performance at the 1B/2B/1A/2A Regional Tournament hosted by Centralia HS. Ostendorf secured a 3rd place finish in the 135lb weight class, earning herself a spot at
the state tournament. Eatonville High School will be wellrepresented at the upcoming WIAA Mat Classic XXXV, with a total of five wrestlers set to compete, and two alternates. The state tournament is scheduled to take place on February 16-17 at the Tacoma Dome.
In line with the WIAA's transition to paperless ticketing, fans are encouraged to purchase their State Tournament tickets digitally through GoFan, the WIAA’s ticketing partner. While online purchases are preferred, limited paper tickets will be available for purchase onsite using mobile devices.

2 Savvy Senior: Does Medicare cover weight-loss treatments?
Feb. 14, 2024
Published Since 1893
DEAR SAVVY SENIOR, Does Medicare cover any weight-loss treatments for overweight retirees? I just turned 65 and need to lose about 100 pounds and would like to know if Medicare can help. Overweight Owen DEAR OWEN, Yes, traditional Medicare does indeed cover some weight-loss treatments like counseling and certain types of surgery for overweight beneficiaries, but unfortunately it doesn’t cover weight-loss programs or medications. Here’s what you should know. WHO’S ELIGIBLE For beneficiaries to receive available Medicare-covered weight-loss treatments your body mass index (BMI), which is an estimate of your body fat based on your height and weight, must be 30 or higher. A BMI of 30 or above is considered obese and increases your risk for many health conditions, such as some cancers, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and sleep apnea. To find out your BMI, the National Institutes of Health has a free calculator that you can access online at nhlbi.nih.gov/health/ educational/lose_wt/BMI/ bmicalc.htm.
WHAT’S COVERED If you find that your BMI is 30 or higher, Medicare Part B will cover up to 12 months of weight-loss counseling conducted by a medical professional in a primary care setting (like a doctor’s office). Most counseling sessions entail an initial obesity screening, a dietary assessment and behavioral therapy designed to help you lose weight by focusing on diet and exercise. Medicare also covers certain types of bariatric and metabolic surgery for morbidly obese beneficiaries who have a BMI of 35 or above and have at least one underlying obesity-related health condition, such as diabetes or heart disease. You must also show that you’ve tried to lose weight in the past through dieting or exercise and have been unsuccessful. These procedures make changes to your digestive system to help you lose weight and improve the health of your metabolism. Some common bariatric surgical procedures covered include Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, which reduces the stomach to a small pouch that makes you feel full even following small meals. And

Rounding out the scoring highlights for Eatonville was Bickford who contributed 11 points before her early departure and Hailey Hall who fell just short of another double-double performance, scoring 10 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. The loss drops the Cruisers into the consolation bracket of the double-elimination tournament, where they will face the #2 seeded Kings Way Christian Knight's in a loser-out game on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. at Montesano High School’s Bo Griffith Memorial Gymnasium. Earlier in the week, the Lady Cruisers opened up district play on Thursday by welcoming in the Castle Rock Rockets. Eatonville asserted their dominance with a commanding 62-34 victory. The game began with a tightly contested first quarter, with Eatonville holding a narrow 13-10 lead. However, the Cruisers seized control in the second quarter, employing an unyielding press defense that flustered the Rockets and resulted in 9 turnovers in the quarter. This defensive prowess fueled a 13-0 run for the Cruisers, culminating in a halftime lead of 32-15. Maintaining their momentum, Eatonville extended their advantage in the third quarter thanks to an 8-0 run midway through to give them a 25 point advantage heading into the final period up 46-21. Although the Rockets played a much better game in the final quarter, only allowing Eatonville to outscore them 16-13, the game was already decided and Eatonville would come away with a 62-34 win. Leading the charge for the Cruisers was Andersen, who scored a game-high 18 points. Sara Smith and Hailey Hall both notched double-doubles, with Smith scoring 13 points (10 in the second half) and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Hall added 12 points and grabbing 10 boards. Bickford narrowly missed a double-digit scoring performance, finishing with 9 points.

WDFW proposing to reclassify gray wolves from ‘state endangered’ to ‘sensitive' By Randy Bracht The Center Square
Katie G. Cotterill/ Northwest Trek Wildlife Park Hudson the beaver.
Meet Hudson: Chip the beaver’s new buddy By Northwest Trek Wildlife Park
Northwest Trek Wildlife Park’s female beaver, Chip, has a new buddy just in time for Valentine’s Weekend! Hudson, a 7-yearold male beaver from New York, has been “courting” Chip behind the scenes for the last few weeks, hoping she takes to him. Fortunately, she did! Now, guests can see them together in their habitat in the wildlife park’s Wetlands area. “We are overjoyed with how well the two beavers are getting along,” said keeper Wendi. “They enjoy snuggling together in their den and grooming each other.” Beavers are social animals, and in the wild, they work together to construct elaborate dams and lodges to create ponds or wetlands. “We expect Chip and Hudson to rearrange their den and move logs together,” said Wendi. Keepers provide fresh logs that the beavers will chew to create their bedding. Sometimes, they also offer grass hay, which Chip has been known to rearrange to her preferred placement. At 17 years old, Chip is the third oldest beaver in human care at an Association of Zoos & Aquariums facility. The median life expectancy for wild beavers is 10-15 years, so she’s doing exceptionally well.
“Chip has strong opinions about everything, particularly who she lives with,” said Wendi. “Fortunately, Hudson has lived with bossy older females before and has skills for that.” Keepers say Hudson is very interactive with and vocal with them. “They are the perfect match,” said Wendi. How to tell them apart Chip has dark brown fur. Hudson has lighter brown fur. He’s named after the broad Hudson River for his size and is larger than Chip. Chip weighs 39 pounds, while Hudson weighs 44. BEAVER FUN FACTS • Beavers are engineers, second only to humans in their ability to alter their environment. • They’re expert swimmers, building their lodges with underwater entrances. • They have swimming superpowers like a paddle tail and can hold their breath for up to 15 minutes underwater. • They are active anytime but are usually nocturnal around humans. • When alarmed, a beaver slaps its tail on the water’s surface, creating a loud warning for others. • Their massive front teeth grow throughout their lives – perfect for chewing branches as they build.
By state standards, should gray wolves in Washington be designated endangered, threatened or simply sensitive? To weigh in on that question, the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife this week opened a public comment period that continues through May 6. Currently, gray wolves fall under two separate classifications. By state designation, they are considered endangered across Washington. However, under federal standards, the animals are considered endangered in the western twothirds of the state but threatened – a lower risk threshold – in the eastern third of Washington. And their numbers have been increasing over the past decade. “Wolves in Washington have made significant progress toward recovery since their original state endangered listing in 1980, when there were no known breeding wolves in
the state,” said Julia Smith, WDFW’s Endangered Species Recovery Section manager, in a news release Wednesday. In its rule-making process, WDFW is proposing to change the wolves’ state conservation classification from “endangered” to “sensitive.” “This recommended reclassification to sensitive reflects that progress and most accurately describes the current status of wolves in Washington, while also recognizing that wolves are not yet established in western Washington and should remain protected,” said Smith. According to the department, the state’s wolf population has grown by an average of 23% annually since the agency conducted an initial survey in 2008. In 2022, WDFW and tribes counted 216 wolves in 37 packs, including 26 successful breeding pairs. Many of the animals are found in the timbered, mountainous northeast corner of the state.

WALK IN LOVE By The Rev. Mike Mayor
“Walk in love as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God.” – Ephesians 5:2 One of my favorite quotes from the Christian author Brian McLaren is, to paraphrase, that the way of Jesus is to make manifest faith as love. This is, I believe, what St. Paul is getting at in the quote above. What does such a love look like, however? Well, if we are to take the shape of the life of Jesus seriously, such love is not simply affection. In fact, affection is a fickle thing that can come and go. No, the love of which St. Paul speaks and which Jesus made manifest is much more than simply affection. Jesus was rooted in his own faith tradition. Jesus was a Jew and familiar with the writings of what we call the Old Testament. A core concept of the Jewish scriptures is that of “chesed.” Chesed is a Hebrew word which is usually translated as “steadfast love and faithfulness.” In it is embodied the idea that God cares for and does not abandon his people. In it is made real that nothing can separate us from God’s love. When we look at how Jesus lived that out, he marked his love with a commitment to respect, mutuality, faithfulness, and sacrifice. He went beyond mere affection and engaged those around him with his whole person. It is this kind
of love, marked with grace, that transformed the lives of those Jesus touched. Christians are called to walk in the way of Jesus and not simply believe certain things about him. We are called to be a people of love. To mark our relationships with the same qualities as Jesus’. We are called to seek and serve Christ in all persons and love our neighbor as ourselves. We are called to respect the dignity of others and to work for justice, freedom and peace. To do so will take us places we might not expect and will challenge our faith even as it deepens. But with God’s grace it will also, if we allow it to manifest in us, help to transform the world in which we live. If such a faith sounds interesting and appealing, I invite you to come and experience a warm, welcoming, and affirming community of faith at Christ Episcopal Church of Puyallup. There you will find a safe place to explore your faith and to journey ever deeper into the love of Christ. We welcome you come and explore and be Christ’s hands and heart in this broken and hurting world. To learn more about Christ Church, visit us on the web at www.episcopallup.com, or come to worship some Sunday at 210 Fifth St. SW in Puyallup. The Rev. Mike Mayor is at Christ Episcopal Church of Puyallup
