Eatonville High School teacher Tira Hancock has been inducted into the Washington Activity Coordinators Association Hall of Fame. The Washington Activity Coordinators Association established the Hall of Fame in 2002 to honor individuals who have made a significant, lasting impact on student activities in the state of Washington. Dr. Hancock, like all recipients of this award, has demonstrated leadership and dedication to providing high quality student leadership programs at the school, district and state level. Cruisers ground Rockets, advance to district semifinals

Despite struggling with turnovers and foul troubles most of the night, Eatonville still outpaced Castle Rock as they downed the Rockets, 64-53, in the first round of the Southwestern Washington District 4 boys basketball playoffs Friday night at Rainier Connect Arena in Eatonville.

This was a rematch of last year's district championship game that saw the Rockets edge the Cruisers, 44-42, in a close battle. The Cruisers got their revenge in this game and sent Castle Rock to the consolation rounds.

After a close game in the first quarter, Eatonville's Shay Brannon scored 12 points to help the Cruisers take a two-point advantage, 16-14.

The Cruisers used a 6-0 run early in the second quarter to build that margin and take an 11-point lead into the locker room at 37-26.

Griffin Clevenger's nine points were key to that lead.

The Rockets wouldn't roll over though, and they battled back in the third quarter to cut the Cruiser lead to six. With the Cruisers leading 46-40, Clevenger hit a three-quarters-court shot as time expired to extend their lead to nine entering the final period.

Foul trouble crept up on the Cruisers in the final period with Brannon and Kyle Cox fouling out, but not before they combined for eight of the Cruisers' points in the quarter. The rest of the team took over and limited the Rockets to only five points in the final four minutes to help lead Eatonville to the win. Brannon led Eatonville with 24 points. With that win, Eatonville advanced to the semifinals and hosted the Elma Eagles Tuesday at Rainier Connect Arena at Eatonville High School. Results were not available before press time.

Brooke Blocker and Ryan Stammen led Eatonville with eight points each.

Facing elimination in a loser-out game, the Cruisers hosted the La Center Wildcats at Rainier Connect Arena on Saturday evening.

With Bailey Andersen back in the lineup for Eatonville, the Cruisers grabbed the lead in the second quarter and never looked back as they cruised to a 52-35 victory.

e Pierce County Council unanimously passed a resolution formally requesting that two sites be removed from consideration for Washington state’s next major airport.

e Commercial Aviation Coordinating Commission proposed three “green eld” sites for a new commercial airport in Washington state as part of a plan to address the fact that SeattleTacoma International Airport is on track to exceed its capacity by 2050.

e three sites were chosen from a list of 10 green eld, or undeveloped, locations by the commission, which was tasked by the state Legislature in 2019 with identifying a potential site for a new airport to be constructed by 2040.

3 ½ ounces cabbage kimchi, chopped into 1/4-inch pieces

¾ ounce tomato, diced into 1/4-inch pieces

¾ ounces pickled jalapenos, diced into 1/4-inch pieces

Slaw

4 teaspoons yuzu juice

3 tablespoons Kewpie mayonnaise

½ red onion, thinly sliced

½ cucumber, deseeded and julienned

½ Asian pear, peeled and julienned

To serve

8 taco shells (5 inches in diameter)

8 teaspoons sour cream

1 small tomato, nely diced

Baby coriander (cilantro)

First, make the kimchi salsa. In a medium bowl, toss together the kimchi, tomato and jalapenos until evenly mixed, then set aside.

Next, to make the slaw, whisk the yuzu juice and mayonnaise together in a medium bowl. Stir in the red onion, cucumber and pear. Cover and leave in the fridge. Half ll a heavy-based saucepan with oil and heat to 350 F.

Make the tempura batter just before frying. In a bowl, whisk together the tempura our and soda water, making sure to keep it lumpy.

Salt the sea bass on both sides. Working in batches, dip the sh into the tempura batter, and fry for about 3 to 4 minutes, until the batter is golden brown and the sh is cooked. Place on a rack to drain o any excess oil and keep warm while you cook the rest.

Heat the taco shells according to the packet instructions. Line the shells up on a plate and add a piece of the sh to each one. Top with the slaw and then the salsa. Garnish with a dollop of sour cream, diced tomato and baby coriander.

e three sites chosen are dubbed “Pierce County East,” “Pierce County Central” and “ urston County Central.”

“Pierce County East” is the designation for a six-mile radius area south of Graham that includes state Route 161. “Pierce County Central” is a six-mile radius south of South Creek in an area where state routes 702 and 7 converge. urston County Central” is a six-mile radius southeast of east Olympia.

Councilmember Ryan Mello summed up opposition to the idea of siting a new airport in Pierce County.

“All of us get on airplanes,” he said at the Feb. 7 meeting. “We all know we have aviation challenges – that Sea-Tac airport is at capacity. But that doesn’t mean that we need to build a new airport at a green eld site at the expense of our rural heritage and our working lands and habitat land and quality of life in rural Pierce County.”

Meanwhile, the Washington State Legislature is responding to the controversy in the form of House Bill 1791, which calls for the creation of a workgroup to replace the CACC.

HB 1791 is set for a public hearing before the House Transportation Committee ursday.

In other business, the council con rmed the appointment of Sammie Jo irtyacre to the Pierce County Veterans Advisory Board. e council also passed a resolution recognizing February 2023 as “National Parent Leadership Month” in Pierce County.

South Pierce County Historical Society moves forward as a Washington Main Street Affiliate

Courtesy South Pierce County Historical Society

In a recent town hall meeting, the South Pierce County Historical Society continued discussions on moving forward as a recently designated Washington Main Street A liate. e well-attended meeting included local business owners, city residents, building owners, local government and residents from the greater-Eatonville area.

South Pierce County Historical Society President Bob Walter noted that the Main Street program, which is supported by the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation under contract to the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, is “preservationbased economic development.”

“ e Main Street program is based on small incremental steps,” Walter said. “ is is an opportunity to leverage human potential beyond historic preservation.”

Walter outlined the four key points of the program: economic vitality, outreach, design and promotion.

He noted other Main Street e orts in towns across the state that involve historic preservation, revitalization of downtown areas, improvements in livability, updates of town codes to support preservation and repurposing of existing commercial spaces, and creation of new public spaces. Typically, Walter said, non-pro t organizations are established to coordinate such Main Street e orts. He said that resources for establishing a non-pro t organization, establishing mission and vision statements and engaging the community are available online to Main Street members and a liates. As a newly designated a liate, the Eatonville project will have access to these resources, he said.

Guest speaker Kerry Yanasak, executive director of the Puyallup Main Street Association, shared the experiences and successes of the Puyallup Main Street Association’s e orts. Grounded in a 30-year history, the Puyallup Main Street Association sponsors the Puyallup Farmer’s Market and has been strategic about storefront businesses within the downtown area. Yanasak also discussed revenue sources available to Main Street organizations through substantial business and occupation tax credit incentives.
