Dunn emphasized the formality of adding the bicycle park project into the town’s Parks and Trails Plan. He questioned whether the council could simply add the project into the plan at a future meeting, or if public meetings must be held for public comment, which he hopes to address at a future meeting.

Eatonville School Board hears elementary improvement plan

On May 10, the Eatonville School Board had a work study meeting at Eatonville Elementary. The presentation began with students presenting with Art Specialist Renee Ricketts. Joey, Johanna and Aubrey presented their artwork and what art concepts they were learning to the School Board.

Principal Nick Birklid presented the Eatonville Elementary School Improvement Plan for 2022-23. The plan centered around three goals in the areas of math, English language arts and behavior/social emotional learning.

The primary focus for the first two goals in the areas of math and ELA were around the area of academic intervention. This has been a primary focus due to the academic gaps and struggles students have after the part few school years. Birklid discussed the data that has been used in

He shared some success that has been seen in kindergarten interventions with struggling learners as well as the work that is being done piloting the iReady Program. Birklid also shared some success that EES has seen with community engagement with high turnouts for both their ELA and math family nights this school year.

He then shared the work that will be done next year to try to narrow the focus of curricula and tools available in order to get targeted training for both teachers and paraeducators. This will also staff to better provide instruction to students in both core and interventions. Birklid also shared the need for additional paraeducator support and space.

Cruiser baseball team’s hopes dashed at district tournament

A er a surge in the nal weeks of the regular season, the Eatonville Cruiser baseball team entered the district tournament with high hopes of clinching a coveted spot in the state championships. e Cruisers’ dreams were dashed, however, as they su ered consecutive losses, resulting in an early elimination from the tournament.

Hopes were high as the Cruisers arrived at Castle Rock baseball eld for their rst game of the tournament when they faced o against the reigning 1A SWW District 4 champions, the La Center Wildcats. Eatonville struck rst and scored in the top of the rst inning on a Cooper Field double that brought home Michael Stogsdill for a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, the Wildcats tied up the score. e Cruisers could not overcome the Wildcats' relentless o ense, and they fell 19-1 and

dropped into the consolation bracket. e Cruisers regrouped to compete against the King’s Way Christian Knights. A win was necessary to keep their playo hopes alive.

e Knights scored ve runs in the top of the rst inning, while Eatonville mustered only two runs in the game, and the Knights coasted to a 19-2 victory, eliminating Eatonville from the tournament and ending the Cruisers’ season.

Head coach Doug Fillbach, though disappointed with the outcome, was proud of his team’s journey this season.

“I want to commend our team for their perseverance and resilience throughout a challenging season,” he said. “Taking over a er a longtime head coach is no easy task, and I am proud of the way our players embraced the change and gave their all on the eld. We are a young team, and I'm excited to improve and continue to grow with these guys.”
