Endangered northern leopard froglets growing fast at Northwest Trek

Submitted

Hundreds of endangered northern leopard frogs will leap back into the wild soon, thanks to a recovery effort at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) officials delivered the frog eggs to the Eatonville wildlife park in early May.

“We’ve watched them hatch and then grow from tadpoles to froglets in a short amount of time,” said Northwest Trek Zoological Curator Marc Heinzman. “At this rate, the frogs should be ready to hop back into the wild this summer.”

Once abundant throughout North America, northern leopard frogs are rapidly disappearing from their native ranges in Washington,

Senior Savvy: How to locate interesting volunteer opportunities in your area

Dear Savvy Senior, Can you recommend some good organizations or websites for locating interesting volunteer opportunities? I’ve been doing some volunteer work since I retired last year, but most of the jobs I’ve tried haven’t been very fun or satisfying.

Retired Volunteer

Dear Retired,

For many retirees, nding a volunteer opportunity that meets your interests, utilizes your talents and ts your availability can be challenging. To help you nd some interesting and satisfying volunteer opportunities, here are some tips and online tools that can help you search.

GETTING STARTED

Volunteering is a great way for retirees to make a positive contribution to their community and stay actively engaged, not to mention it’s good for your health too. But how can you nd the right opportunity for you? Start by asking yourself some basic questions like: What types of organizations or activities are you interested in? What kind of skills can you o er a volunteer organization? How

much time are you willing to give? What do you want to gain from your experience (for example, meet new people, learn new skills, help those in need, exposure to a particular issue)?

Once you get a general idea of what you’d like to do, there are dozens of volunteer websites that can help you search for di erent opportunities in your area and virtually.

Most sites work like search engines that let you choose an area of interest and type in your ZIP code or city and state. e sites will then give you a list of opportunities that you can check into. Depending on your interest and expertise, here are some top websites to help you get started.

General volunteer sites: To nd a wide variety of volunteer opportunities in your community that serve causes like children, animals, seniors, education, health, the arts and more check out sites like VolunteerMatch.org, Engage.PointsofLight.org, IdeaList.org and UnitedWay. org.

Retired volunteer sites: If you’re interested in opportunities targeting older adults and retirees, some good options include

AARP’s Create eGood. org, along with AmeriCorps Seniors (AmeriCorps.gov/ serve/americorps-seniors), which matches retirees with community projects and organizations that need experienced volunteer help. AmeriCorps Seniors o ers three di erent programs: RSVP, which has a variety of volunteer activities with exible time commitments; the Senior Companion Program that brings together volunteers with homebound seniors who have di culty with day-to-day living tasks; and the Foster Grandparent Program that matchers volunteers with kids in the community that have

exceptional needs.

Niche volunteer sites: ere are also a number of niche websites to help you look for speci c types of volunteer opportunities in your area. For example, to nd natural and cultural volunteer opportunities in places like national and state parks, see Volunteer. gov. If you’re interested in emergency preparedness and disaster response volunteer services, try Ready.gov or RedCross. org. If you have a knack for construction or have an interest in learning about interior design, see Habitat.org. Or, if you’re interested in longer-term volunteer opportunities

check out AmeriCorps.gov and PeaceCorps.gov/50plus, which o ers three-month to two-year programs in the U.S and abroad.

Professional volunteer sites: If you have expertise in areas like business planning and development, marketing, communications, nance, fundraising, web and graphic design, or writing and editing there are sites like Catcha re.org and TaprootPlus.org that can link you to volunteer opportunities with nonpro t organizations in need. Or you can help entrepreneurs and small business owners through the SCORE. org volunteer mentoring program.

In March 2022, Douglas County Superior Court Judge Brian Huber struck down the tax, ruling that it was “properly characterized as an income tax . . . rather than as an excise tax as argued by the State.”

Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson then directly appealed the decision to the Supreme Court, which later allowed the Washington state Department of Revenue to begin collecting the tax while it considered the appeal. e Center Square previously reported on the capital gains tax bringing in almost $850 million in 2023, far exceeding initial expectations of bringing in at least $500 million a year for early learning and child care programs.

Hiking and camping opportunities heat up when the weather warms. Come summer, individuals feel compelled to load up their campers or pack their tents and enjoy some forested paradise.

Meals are a consideration when camping. Certainly frankfurters or sandwiches can get you by in a pinch, but for avid campers, it helps to have a more diverse array of recipes at the ready, which can really enhance the camping experience. Consider this recipe

Oregon and western Canada. e species has been listed as endangered in Washington since 1999. With only one known wild population remaining in the state, the frogs still have a long road to recovery.

“Every froglet is important,” said Heinzman. “Giving these frogs a headstart by raising them free of predators gives them a much better chance of survival in the wild. We’re very pleased to participate in this critical recovery e ort to help save these endangered frogs.”

“We’re so appreciative of all the hard work by our partners at Northwest Trek on this northern leopard frog conservation project,” said Sean Dougherty, WDFW district wildlife biologist based out of Ephrata. “In addition to the captive rearing programs at Northwest Trek and Oregon Zoo, we have

partners helping with habitat improvement and population monitoring, all in the interest of helping recover this species in Washington.”

Likely causes of the frogs’ decline in the Paci c Northwest include habitat loss and degradation, diseases, non-native species, and climate change.

According to WDFW o cials, northern leopard frogs are an important indicator of water quality due to their permeable skin. Improving and conserving wetland habitat will help frogs and other species, ranging from amphibians to waterfowl and deer.

WDFW is partnering with

Northwest Trek, Washington State University, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Oregon Zoo to better understand population status and trends, improve habitat conditions, and reintroduce a northern leopard frog population to the Columbia National Wildlife Refuge.

Funding for the northern leopard frog reintroduction is provided through a competitive state wildlife grant awarded to WDFW from USFWS’s Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration program and Potholes Supplemental Feed Route mitigation funds provided by Department of Ecology.

Washington State Ferries to increase fares to cover $28 million shortfall

e Washington State Transportation Commission held its annual meeting at Friday Harbor, and the topic of discussion was ferries and fares.

On the agenda was the recently passed transportation budget, which sets a funding target of $419 million for the coming biennium. A target the Washington State Ferry System is currently $28 million short of.

is funding shortage necessitates an approximate 4% increase in fares for the WSF system each year for the next two years.

e question is, what form will that increase take?

rough the WSTC’s online public input forum conducted from May 15 through June 9, 2023, the transportation commission gathered data from survey respondents on three possible options for fare increases.

Option one was a straight 4% increase for vehicle and walk-on passengers alike, with multi-ride passes maintaining a 20% discount, though from the newly 4% increased fares.

Option two was a 3.5% increase for walk-on passengers and a 4.5% increase for vehicles, with that same 20% discount for multi-ride passes.

Option three was a 4.25% increase for vehicle and walk-on passengers alike, but with the multi-ride pass discount increasing to 21%, again on top of the newly increased fares.

Survey respondents overwhelmingly preferred the third option, with it garnering nearly three times the votes of either of the other two options. It was the recommendation of the committee to adopt option three.

However, that may not be the only fare change coming this year.

Also discussed was adopting a potential fuel surcharge, which would be “structured as an incremental and additional charge that is applied to the standard fare.”

While this rule has been in place since 2010 per ESSB 6381, it has yet to be implemented. Also, the passage of this year’s transportation budget changed those implementation details slightly.

is fuel surcharge could range from 2.5% to 10% of the fare and would be calculated quarterly based on a formula by Washington State Ferries.

e public should note that these fare increases are not yet nalized, with one additional public hearing taking place on Aug. 10th.

If adopted into law, the new fares would take e ect Oct. 1, 2023.

Washington state’s 4.1% unemployment rate among the worst in the nation

A report from WalletHub shows that Washington state’s unemployment claims are among the highest in the nation.

In terms of unemployment rate changes, Washington came in as the No. 46 state in the nation, according to the personal nance website’s study.

To determine its rankings, WalletHub looked at all 50 states and the District of Columbia, comparing the changes in unemployment from May – the most recent gures available – to April 2023, May 2022, May 2020 and May 2019. WalletHub also factored in each state’s overall unemployment rate.

“May’s jobs report showed an uptick in growth,” the WalletHub report states. “ e economy gained 339,000 nonfarm payroll jobs, up from 294,000 the previous month. In May, there were notable gains in sectors including professional and business services, government, health care, construction, transportation and warehousing, and social assistance.

Now, the U.S. unemployment rate sits at 3.7%. We have come a long way from the nearly historic high of 14.7%

in May 2020, due to a combination of vaccinations and the country fully reopening. However, in ation and the potential of a recession threaten to push the unemployment rate higher again if Federal Reserve rate increases are not able to stave them o .”

WalletHub analyst Jill Gonzalez spoke to Washington’s low ranking.

“Washington is the state with the 6th worst unemployment rate change,” she emailed e Center Square. “Its current unemployment rate is 4.1%, higher than the 3.7% national average. When compared to May 2022, Washington registered a 6.6% increase in the number of unemployed people. However, this number was slightly smaller in May than in April 2023.”

Per the WalletHub report, the Evergreen State shares a 4.1% unemployment rate with Illinois and Texas.

Only Delaware (4.2%), California (4.5%), the District of Columbia (5.1%) and Nevada (5.4%) have a higher unemployment rate than Washington.

“Although the report doesn’t dive into the speci c reasons behind Washington’s high unemployment rate, the drop could be due to the re-emergence of seasonal jobs,” Gonzalez speculated.
