With a new coach, Cruisers prepare for 2023 season

Approaching the 2023 high school football season, the Eatonville Cruiser football team is gearing up for another successful year. With a fresh head coach at the helm, the Cruisers aim to capitalize on their achievements from the previous season and continue their streak of six consecutive trips to the state playo s.

Taking charge a er Gavin Kralik's departure, Rex Norris assumes the role of head coach. Norris, who served as the team's defensive coordinator the last few seasons, is no stranger to leading a team. He previously guided the Kentwood Conquerors football team from 2004 to 2015, amassing an 8730 record, including ve league titles.

Norris is fully aware of the responsibility he's inheriting from Kralik and

the rich legacy of Cruiser football.

“Eatonville football has thrived under the remarkable leadership of Gavin Kralik for several seasons. His e orts not only cultivated a strong team culture but also reinstated Eatonville as

a force in the state,” he said. “Despite changes in coaching sta and the departure of key players to college, we are committed to upholding that legacy. While we're demanding a lot from our coaches and players, the groundwork is in place for the tradition

DNR has blunt message for UAV operators: Stop flying drones near wildfires

As wildland res continue to burn around the region, the Washington State Department of Natural Resources has a blunt message for operators of unmanned aerial vehicles: “STOP FLYING DRONES NEAR WILDFIRES. DRONES GROUND OUR AIRCRAFT.”

“Can’t believe we have to say this,” the agency posted on social media earlier this week.

to endure. We eagerly anticipate the upcoming season."

Eatonville is not the lone team in the league introducing new leadership. Elma's Ron Clark stepped down, and

e message was also shared in recent news releases as DNR personnel and scores of other re ghters battled two major blazes which started last Friday in Spokane County, prompting mass evacuations of residents and destroying hundreds of homes. Two related deaths have been reported. Authorities say drones pose a serious threat to aircra which “ y low and fast” when planes and helicopters are used to assess and combat the ames.

Drone operators who intrude into a re space are subject to Federal Aviation Administration violations with civil penalties ranging up to $27,500 plus possible criminal prosecution.

In June, air crews had to leave the Iron Creek Fire in the Gi ord Pinchot National Forest near Randle due to a drone in the area, DNR reported.

“Our re ghting operations are more important than those 12 likes you'll get on Instagram,” the department said on its Facebook post. “Interference with our aerial operations could cost our re crews crucial time.”

e same warning applies to boaters trying to “race” aircra scooping water from lakes for re suppression. DNR cited one instance where a jet ski drove in front of a scooper.

“It's not cute! You'll lose (your pride and possibly your boat),” the advisory stated. “ ere are multiple res on the landscape. We’re trying to contain them quickly. Give our crews space to put them out!”

In an update issued this Friday morning in Spokane County, the Gray Fire near Medical Lake has burned an estimated 10,016 acres and is considered 68% contained. A total of 638 personnel have been deployed on the blaze, including 13 crews, 72 engines, three bulldozers and 17 water tenders.

As residents begin to return,

authorities said crews are mopping up the perimeter and working inside the burned area to perform structure assessments, take down hazardous trees, and suppress hot spots. e arrival of rain earlier this week was welcome and light showers might arrive today before warmer weather returns this weekend with temperatures in the 90s, the report stated.

A closed portion of Interstate 90 between Spokane and Sprague was also reopened earlier this week, along with access to State Routes 904 and 902.

In north Spokane County, just over 1,000 personnel are assigned to the Oregon Fire, which has burned an estimated 11,063 acres and is considered 16% contained. ere, 25 crews are utilizing 71 engines, 10 bulldozers, 21 water tenders, and four helicopters.

e incident crew used its own authorized aerial drones on the re’s east ank to scout for pockets of heat and improve containment line locations.

“Great progress has been made in containment line strength (notably on the west ank) and structure protection, with none lost in the last 48 hours,” Friday’s update stated.

Evacuation levels continue to change and residents were advised to check updated maps posted on Facebook for Spokane and Pend Oreille counties.

the role will now be shared by Casey Doyle and Larry Raynes, who were last year's o ensive and defensive coordinators. Similarly, in Tenino, turmoil within the high school administration, school district, and school board prompted Cary Nagel and his entire team to resign, despite their successful transformation of the program into a perennial state contender. Former Capital head coach Darren Tinnerstet has taken over from Nagel.

A er sharing the league title with Tenino and Montesano last season, the Cruisers are determined to claim the top spot in the standings this year. e team boasts 13 returning starters, with six on o ense and seven on defense.

e most signi cant gaps to address are in the o ensive and defensive lines, as well as the quarterback position.

Senior Hunter Klumpar will assume the role of quarterback. A er serving as a backup for the past few seasons, Klumpar is stepping up as the starter and aims to lead the Cruisers back to the playo s. Klumpar will have the support of a couple of All-League returning players. Junior Ky Nation, who led the team in receiving with 403 yards, will continue as a wide receiver.

Senior Dylan Norman, who achieved over 1,100 rushing yards last season, is set to lead Eatonville's running game once again.

Key players: Dylan Norman (RB), Ky Nation (WR/DB), Riley Hill (WR), Memphis Barney (OL), Aaron

Schedule: Again this year, the Cruisers will play a pretty tough nonleague schedule with three of those being against teams that made it to the state tournament.

“We have a very young team,” said Norris. “So the early experience of playing playo -caliber teams will help us gain the understanding of what it means to play at that level. Our league has constantly had top 10 teams and you have to be ready for that if you want to make it to the playo s. Every year, we want to prepare our players to complete at a high level and this schedule will force the issue.”

e Cruisers will open the season on the road as they travel to Ingersoll Stadium in Bremerton to take on the Olympic Trojans for the second year in a row.

Here is the Cruisers' complete 2023 season schedule:

Sept. 1 @ Olympic, 6 p.m. (Integrity Roo ng Stadium, Bremerton)

Hunting, while no longer a practical necessity, remains a popular pastime in the United States — and one that has drawn rising public interest in recent years. According to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, there were over 15.9 million licensed hunters in the U.S. in 2021, nearly 800,000 more than there were in 2018.

While hunting is a way of life for many Americans in all 50 states, in some parts of the country, it is far more popular than others.

In Washington, 185,147 paid hunting licenses were issued in 2021. Adjusting for population, this comes out to 2.4 for every 100 people, the 11th fewest among states.

Explanations for hunting's popularity in certain parts of the country vary. Hunting culture, simplicity of hunting laws, the size of available game, or the variety and abundance of animal species can all play a role. Many of the states with the most hunters per capita have access to public land open to sports men and women.

According to the Protected Areas Database program of the U.S. Geological Survey, 38.3% of land area in Washington is publicly protected, the 12th highest share among states.

All data on the number of licensed hunters is from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Population data used to adjust hunting license apportionments per capita came from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2021 American Community Survey.

September is National Preparedness Month

Submitted

National Preparedness Month is an observance each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time.

Much ado about TOMATOES

If you have the luxury — I mean, the problem — of too many end-of-season tomatoes, then this confit is for you. Confit is an ancient form of preservation in which perishable food is slowly cooked at a low temperature in fat and then stored in fat. It was (and is) an efficient and safe method to cook and store meat and fish that would otherwise perish. The term “confit” also applies to preserving fruits and vegetables, which may be slowly cooked in oil or a sugar syrup — a method that yields jams, chutneys and candied fruit. This end-of-summer confit is a rich, bright and buttery blend of tomatoes and garlic. The key to the recipe is its simplicity of ingredients and the slow cooking time, which allows the tomatoes to reduce to a juicy sludge and a whole head of garlic to collapse and melt into a buttery paste. Your reward is a savory jam with myriad uses. Smear the confit on crostini, spoon a dollop into a bowl of pasta, use as a pizza sauce, or dilute it with cream for a silky, rich soup. No matter the use, it will be a warm and sunny memory of summer's tomato bounty.

TOMATO AND GARLIC CONFIT

Active time: 10 minutes

Total time: 1 hour

Yield: Makes about 2 cups

1 large garlic head

Extra-virgin olive oil

2 pounds cherry or heirloom tomatoes

2 sprigs fresh thyme or marjoram

1 teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Heat the oven to 400 degrees. To roast the garlic, slice off the top of the head, about 1/4 inch. Place on a piece of foil, cut side up, and drizzle with about 1 tablespoon olive oil. Wrap the foil up over the garlic and crimp to seal. Place in a small baking pan or on a baking sheet. Roast in the oven until the cloves are very soft, 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the size of the bulb. Remove the garlic and cool to the touch. Squeeze out the garlic cloves onto a work surface and mash to form a paste.

While the garlic roasts, cook the tomatoes: Combine the tomatoes and 1/3 cup oil in a large saucepan. Cook over medium heat until the tomatoes begin to break down, 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon.

Add the herb sprigs and continue to cook over mediumlow heat until all the tomatoes have broken down and the sauce thickens, 30 to 40 minutes more, stirring occasionally while breaking up the tomatoes with the wooden spoon.

Stir in the garlic, salt and pepper and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes to meld the flavors. Taste for seasoning.

Remove from the heat and cool to room temperature. The confit may be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or in the freezer for up to 6 months.

In 2021, FEMA’s Ready Campaign and the Ad Council broke ground by producing the first-ever national preparedness campaign specifically targeting the Latino community for National Preparedness Month. Released during Hispanic Heritage month, the advertisements centered around the Latino community’s commitment to personal planning for occasions and family milestones as a bridge to also planning for disasters.

This one-of-a-kind campaign is committed to putting people first and reaching communities where they are. To continue these efforts, this year’s National Preparedness Month campaign will feature a call to action for the Black and African American community.

This year’s national public service announcements are being developed and will be released throughout the country this September, to help get preparedness information into the hands of those who live in underserved communities.

2023 Theme: Preparing for Older Adults

The Ready Campaign’s 2023

National Preparedness Month theme is “Take Control in 1, 2, 3”. The campaign will focus on preparing older adults for disasters, specifically older adults from communities that are disproportionally impacted by the all-hazard events, which continue to threaten the nation.

We know older adults can face greater risks when it comes to the multitude of extreme weather events and emergencies we now face, especially if they are living alone, are low-income, have a disability, or live in rural areas.

Emergency managers and all those who work with and support older adult communities to access the new webpage available in English and Spanish languages at Ready.gov/older-adults and Ready. gov/es/adultos-mayores for initial messaging, graphics and resources. For more information on preparing with disabilities visit Ready. gov/disability or Ready.gov/es/ discapacidad in Spanish.

Washington State Parks has collected $14M more so far than 2021-23 projections

Washington State Parks took in more money than expected during the past two years.

State Parks has collected $141.7 million so far in the current 202123 biennium. That's $14 million, or 12%, more than the department anticipated. That’s according to a financial report delivered at a Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission meeting on Wednesday

Laura Holmes, Washington State Parks administrative services director, said the initial revenue projections were conservative. The excess $14 million was used on supplemental requests, according to her: $5 million for inflationary costs, $5 million for equipment and the remaining $4 million for park

maintenance.

Discover Pass sales made up 37% of the $141.7 million in collected revenue, more than camping, roofed overnight accommodations, license renewal donations and other revenue streams.

According to the financial update, 41.1 million people visited Washington parks from July 2022 through June 2023. That is 1% more than the 40.8 million that visited in the 2022 fiscal year.

Initial results from July hint that collected revenue may continue to increase in the 2024 fiscal year. Last month, $9.9 million was reported collected, which is 7% more than what the department originally projected. Projections for August are nearly $12 million in generated revenue, and then a drop off until spring starts in March 2024.

The Sound Transit Board of Directors has authorized up to $43 million from the existing East Link Extension's $3.7 billion budget to fund projects necessary to open the East Link Starter Line in March 2024.

The eight-station segment’s opening was approved by the board on Thursday, despite the fact the full East Link light rail extension will not be completed by then. Quality-control issues were discovered along the Interstate 90 portion of the East Link Extension, resulting in the demolition and reconstruction of several concrete bases supporting the structure of the rail line.

Service is proposed to run with two-car trains every 10 minutes, 16 hours a day. The initial light rail service will run between South Bellevue and Redmond Technology stations, but will also connect passengers to Overlake Medical Center, the Spring District and the BelRed area.

“It’s an exciting step to connect more communities via fast, carbon-free Link light rail, and opening these stations on the Eastside is the opening act of the 2 Line,” Sound Transit Board Chair and King County Executive Dow Constantine said in a statement. “From Redmond to Bellevue, people have a new option to get to work, school, and all the things that make this community special.”

The board is expected in October to approve completion of the East Link Extension project as part of Sound Transit's 2024 Service Plan.

The East Link Extension project was approved by voters in 2008, with construction on the project beginning in 2017.

Light rail trains have been running to test the overhead electrical power system and train signal system. Simulated service is set to begin in early 2024 as part of stress testing of operations.
