Superintendent’s message about bus driver shortage

First and foremost, I apologize for the impact that the bus driver shortage has had on our Eatonville students and families.

e Eatonville School District is diligently working to address this issue, as is almost every other school district in Washington. Despite our extensive e orts, we still nd ourselves lacking su cient bus drivers to cover all routes, resulting in route cancellations and rerouting e orts. However, our determination remains unwavering and we are committed to nding viable solutions to alleviate this problem.

Senior Savvy: Best stair lifts of 2023

Dear Savvy Senior, Because of chronic arthritis, I have a very di cult time going up and down stairs anymore and am interested in purchasing a stair li for my twostory house. Can you recommend some good companies?

Arthritic Andy

Dear Andy,

Yes, of course! A good home stair li is a great mobility solution for anyone who is unable, or has a di cult time climbing stairs. To help you choose a quality stair li that meets your needs and budget, here are a few shopping tips along with some top-rated companies.

What to Know

ere are two basic types of stair li s that are sold today: straight and curved. e type you need will depend upon the design of your staircase.

A straight stair li is one that travels in a straight line up a ight of stairs uninterrupted by landings, bends or curves, and costs anywhere between $2,000 and $5,000 installed. Curved li s, however, are much more elaborate and will go around corners, bends and changes in direction. Curved li s are also much more expensive, typically running between $8,500 and $15,000 or

more depending on the complexity of the installation.

Most stair li s available today also have seats, armrests and footplates that fold up out of the way, and swivel seats that make getting into and out of the chair easier. ey also come with standard safety features like seatbelts, braking systems and footrest sensors, push-button or rocker-switch controls located on the armrest for easy operation, and “call send” controls which allow you to call or send the unit to the other end of the stairs. Make sure the li you choose has all these features.

If you are a large person, you may need to get a heavy-duty li with a wider seat and bigger li ing capacity – all companies o er them. Or, if you’re tall, nd out about raising the seat height during installation.

Depending on the company, you may also have the option of choosing between an electric (AC) and a battery powered (DC) stair

li . Electric stair li s are simpler and cheaper than battery powered units, but if your home loses power so does your li . While battery powered li s work even if there’s a power failure.

BEST STAIR LIFTS

To help you choose a great stair li the National Council on Aging, which is a national nonpro t organization that advocates for older Americans, put together a review team to research the di erent companies. eir list of best stair li s of 2023 includes:

• Editor’s Pick: Bruno (bruno. com)

• Most A ordable: AmeriGlide (ameriglide.com)

• Best Customer Reviews: Acorn (acornstairli s.com)

• Most Supportive Design: Harmar (harmar.com)

• Most Adaptable to the Home: Access BDD (accessbdd.com)

• Best for Arthritis: Stannah (stannah-stairli s.com)

See NCOA.org/adviser/stair-li s/ best-stair-li s to read their detailed reviews.

FINANCIAL HELP

Unfortunately, health insurance including original Medicare does not cover home stair li s, but some Medicare Advantage plans may help pay. Or, if you have long-term care insurance it too may cover a portion of the costs.

If you qualify for Medicaid, many states o er waivers that may help pay for a li , and the VA has several grant and bene t programs that may o er assistance too if you’re a veteran.

To save some money, you may want to consider purchasing a used or refurbished model. Or, if you need a stair li for only a short period of time, consider renting one. Most companies o er these options, and many o er nancings too.

To get started, contact some of the previously listed stair li companies who will put you in touch with a dealer in your area. All dealers provide free in-home assessments and estimates and can help you choose an appropriate li .

Phone and Internet Discounts Available to CenturyLink Customers

The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission designated CenturyLink as an Eligible Telecommunications Carrier within its service area for universal service purposes. CenturyLink’s basic local service rates for residential voice lines are $30.50 per month and business services are $43.50 per month. Specific rates will be provided upon request.

CenturyLink participates in the Lifeline program, which makes residential telephone or qualifying broadband service more affordable to eligible low-income individuals and families. Eligible customers may qualify for Lifeline discounts of $5.25/month for voice or bundled voice service or $9.25/month for qualifying broadband or broadband bundles. Residents who live on federally recognized Tribal Lands may qualify for additional Tribal benefits if they participate in certain additional federal eligibility programs. The Lifeline discount is available for only one telephone or qualifying broadband service per household, which can be either a wireline or wireless service. Broadband speeds must be at least 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload to qualify.

CenturyLink also participates in the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), which provides eligible households with a discount on broadband service. The ACP provides a discount of up to $30 per month toward broadband service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands.

For both programs, a household is defined as any individual or group of individuals who live together at the same address and share income and expenses. Services are not transferable, and only eligible consumers may enroll in these programs. Consumers who willfully make false statements to obtain these discounts can be punished by fine or imprisonment and can be barred from these programs.

If you live in a CenturyLink service area, visit https://www. centurylink.com/aboutus/community/community-development/ lifeline.html for additional information about applying for these programs or call 1-800-201-4099 with questions.

Slurp to your health with this nutrient-rich soup

Anourishing soup is a welcome and restorative timeout during a busy week. This warming soup brims with harvest vegetables and grains mingling in a tomato-based broth fortified with cheese. Butternut squash and leafy kale contribute a healthy dose of vitamins and antioxidants to the pot; their sweet earthiness balances the tomato's acidity. Farro, a nutty ancient grain, provides fiber and a boost of protein. (If desired, barley may be substituted for the farro.)

A hunk of a cheese rind is the surprise -- and key -ingredient, which provides depth of flavor and body to the broth. That's right: The cheese rind will break down and infuse its essence into the broth while it simmers, providing lip-smacking umami flavor and thickening the soup. It's also a handy no-waste use for any odd cheese ends you may have lurking in your refrigerator. Choose a hard Italian cheese, such as ParmigianoReggiano or pecorino Romano for this recipe.

HARVEST VEGETABLE SOUP WITH FARRO

Active Time: 45 minutes

Total Time: 45 minutes

Yield: Serves 4 to 6

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 medium yellow onion, chopped

1 small fennel bulb, halved lengthwise and thinly sliced crosswise

3 cloves garlic, finely chopped

1 cup semi-pearled farro

6 cups chicken stock or vegetable broth or more as needed

2 heaping cups diced butternut squash

1 (15-ounce) can Italian plum tomatoes with juice

1 (2- to 3-inch) chunk of rind of ParmigianoReggiano cheese

1 bay leaf

2 teaspoons dried thyme

1 teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

2 to 3 cups coarsely chopped curly green kale leaves with any tough ribs removed

Finely grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese for sprinkling

Heat the oil in a soup pot over medium heat. Add the onion and fennel and saute until softened without coloring, about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and saute until fragrant, about 15 seconds, then stir in the farro. Stir to coat and lightly toast the grains, about 30 seconds more.

Add the stock, butternut squash, tomatoes, cheese chunk, bay leaf, thyme, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, breaking up the tomatoes with a wooden spoon. Reduce the heat to medium-low, partially cover the pot, and simmer until the squash and farro are tender, about 30 minutes. (If the soup is too thick, add a little more stock.)

Stir in the kale leaves and simmer until the kale brightens in color and wilts, about 2 minutes. Discard the cheese rind and bay leaf and taste for seasoning.

Ladle the soup into bowls and serve with grated cheese for sprinkling.

VOLLEYBALL

Last week was a challenging one for a few of the Eatonville Cruiser sports teams. The Eatonville Cruiser volleyball team faced a tough set of matches and unfortunately dropped all three of them. Their week started with a closely contested match on Monday against Morton-White Pass, which ended in a 3-2 loss. On Wednesday, they faced Toledo and lost 3-0. The week ended on a similar note with another 3-2 loss to Morton-White Pass on Friday. The Cruiser volleyball team remains winless and is eager to turn things around in the upcoming matches against Rochester and Vashon before entering Evergreen 1A league play next week.

BOY’S TENNIS

The Eatonville Cruiser boy’s tennis team also had a tough week, losing both of their matches. On Tuesday, they were defeated 5-0 by Klahowya, and they closed out the week with another 5-0 loss, this time against the Cascade Christian Cougars. Like their volleyball counterparts, the boy’s tennis team is still in search of their first win and hopes to reverse their fortunes in upcoming matches against Life Christian Academy and East Jefferson high schools.

SWIMMING

In contrast, the Eatonville Cruiser swim team had a promising start to their season with their first meet at home against Black Hills. Despite having fewer swimmers than the Black Hills team, the Cruiser girls put up a strong fight and came close to securing a victory for the meet. They had first-place finishes in 7 out of 11 events, including notable performances like Annika Howard's win in the 200 Free and Kaylee Bernt's first place in the 200 IM with a District qualifying time. Gracie Forsman also achieved a District qualifying time in the 50 Free and the 100 Breaststroke. The Cruiser swim team is off to a promising start and aims to continue improving throughout the season. The team had a home meet on Tuesday against Tumwater.

Cruisers struggle against Cougars, drop to 1-2

In a challenging matchup this past Saturday, the Eatonville Cruisers found themselves on the wrong side of a 26-0 score against the #10 ranked Cascade Christian Cougars. e Cruisers faced a relentless Cougar defense that kept them on their toes throughout the game and showed why they deserve that top 10 ranking in the state in the 1A classi cation.

Eatonville's o ensive struggles were evident as they turned the ball over three times during the contest. e Cougar defense proved to be a formidable opponent, intercepting the Cruisers' passes twice and forcing a crucial fumble. In total, Eatonville managed to accumulate just 113 yards of total o ense, a testament to the ferocity of the Cascade Christian defense.

e passing game for Eatonville faced di culties, with the team collectively

completing 13 out of 25 attempts for a mere 73 yards and su ering two interceptions. e rushing game was virtually nonexistent, with the team ending the night with a discouraging negative

3 yards on the ground. However, amidst the struggles, there were a couple of bright spots for the Cruisers. ey successfully executed two fake punts, with Gri n Clevenger gaining 22 yards on one fake

and completing a pass for a crucial rst down on the other.

Defensively, the Cruisers faced another tough outing, particularly in containing the Cougar ground attack. ey conceded a signi cant

254 rushing yards in this game, continuing a trend that has seen them allow an average of 305 rushing yards per game through the rst three games of the season.

One standout performer for Eatonville was Max Henley, who delivered an impressive all-around performance. Henley recorded the sole sack for the Cruisers, blocked an extra point eld goal attempt, and made a spectacular diving catch on o ense, providing a glimmer of hope in an otherwise challenging contest.

Looking ahead, the Cruisers will seek to bounce back as they travel to Bellevue, Washington, to face the Bellevue Christian Vikings in another nonleague matchup. e game is scheduled to take place at Sammamish High School Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 2 pm. Eatonville remains determined to turn their season around and put up a strong ght in the upcoming game.

Current driver hourly pay rates in comparison to neighboring districts: BUS from Page 1Æ

I am asking for your help. I will be hosting a Community Transportation Forum on Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 6 p.m. in the Eatonville High School Auditorium. Together, we can brainstorm strategies to attract and hire more drivers and discuss ideas on how to minimize the impact of the bus driver shortage on parents and students.

I want to emphasize that your concerns have not gone unnoticed, and I can only imagine the significant impact that this transportation challenge has had on you. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to engage with you and collaborate on resolving this crisis. I look forward to seeing you at the forum and hearing your ideas. To get us started, I have included a list of the steps that Eatonville School District has taken over the past year in an attempt to mitigate this

crisis.

Steps that Eatonville School District has taken in the past year to mitigate the crisis:

• Currently exploring an opportunity to offer free supervision before school, and after school at all three Elementary School locations when a regular route has been canceled. This may include supervision for both high school and middle school students at Eatonville Elementary. Implementing a $3,000 hiring bonus for new hires possessing a CDL, and a $2,500 hiring bonus for new hires who earn their CDL.

• Advertising for open Bus Driver positions on the district website and social media, district newsletters, Eatonville Dispatch, and JBLM newspaper.

• Implementing a kiosk in the District Office where applicants can come in, use a district computer, and have access to assistance in completing an employment application.

• Following up with potential leads for bus driver employment.

• Free before and afterschool supervision has been put in place for early drop off at Weyerhaeuser Elementary when there is a

30th place.

• Owen Van Eaton demonstrated his consistency with a solid time of 18:46.80, securing a respectable 45th place.

Washington employment showed modest gains in August

After a dip in July, Washington state’s economy gained an estimated 2,900 non-farm jobs in August, the state's Employment Security Department reported Wednesday.

Updated figures showed the state losing 6,300 jobs in July after a reported gain of 13,100 jobs in June. At the time, ESD state economist Paul Turek said there were overall signs of a cooling labor market when the July numbers were coupled with downward job totals from the first quarter of 2023.

"Job growth resumed in August after declining in July,” Turek said Wednesday in a monthly report. But, he added, “the modest increase continues the pattern of job growth moving at a far cooler pace than the substantial job gains of the past two years.”

Nonetheless, the state’s seasonally adjustment employment rate in August was 3.6%, lower than the national rate of 3.8%. The unemployment rate was even lower – an estimated 3.2% – in the populated Puget Sound areas of Seattle, Bellevue and Everett.

However, unemployment figures varied among Washington’s 39 counties with jobless rates running higher in rural areas. In July, Ferry County had the highest unemployment rate at 6%, followed at 5.2% in Wahkiakum County, 4.7% in Pacific County, 4.6% in Grays Harbor County, 4.3% in Mason and Pend Oreille counties, 4.2% in Kittitas County, and 4.1% in Clallam, Lewis and Stevens counties.

Numbers are based on preliminary estimates from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics and subject to future revision when more data becomes available.

ESD paid unemployment benefits to 56,935 people in August, an increase of 1,763 paid claims compared to July. In particular, there were more paid claims within the agriculture and health-andsocial assistance sectors, the agency said.

The state’s labor force in August was estimated at 4,067,300. Labor force is defined as the total number of people, both employed and unemployed, over the age of 16.

Overall, Washington saw seven industry sectors expand and six contract last month with the private sector seeing the most growth. ESD cited these key increases and decreases: Manufacturing employment rose by 2,800, led by 500 jobs gained in transportation equipment manufacturing.

Jobs in leisure and hospitality increased by 1,300, with 600 jobs gained in arts, entertainment, and recreation.
