Freeman upsets Eatonville, ending Cruisers’ postseason run
By Skip Smith | Contributing writer
The Eatonville Cruisers scored first but ultimately failed to stop Freeman when needed and fell to the Scotties, 23-17, in the Class 1A state football quarterfinals, ending the Cruisers’ season.
Eatonville finished the year at 8-2 and were cochampions of the Evergreen Conference; Freeman improved to 9-2 and will meet Royal in the state semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 26.
How it happened
The Cruisers opened the scoring midway into the first quarter when Job Kralik connected on a 37-yard field goal to give Eatonville a 3-0 lead.
The Scotties responded by driving 88 yards in six plays, capping the drive with a 53-yard scoring strike from Boen Phelps to Luke Whitaker to put Freeman up 7-3.
After an Eatonville fumble, Freeman struck again, this time on a 10-yard Kanoa Rogan run. The extra point was blocked, and the Scotties extended their lead to 13-3.
With Ky Nation in at quarterback, the Cruisers marched 75 yards on 10 plays and found the end zone when Nation hit Kralik in stride for the 53-yard score to cut into the Freeman lead at 13-10.
The Scotties added to their lead when Eatonville’s Kralik, playing at quarterback, was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone, which resulted in a safety. That extended Freeman’s lead to 15-10, and the Cruisers kicked the ball back.
After forcing a Freeman punt, the Cruisers had the ball on their 23-yard line with 3 minutes, 20 seconds left in the half. Eatonville put together an 11-play, 77yard drive that saw Kralik carry the ball in from the 1-yard line for the score to give the Cruisers the lead
back, 17-15, at the half.
The second half
After both teams traded punts to open the second half, Freeman’s Phelps connected with Whitaker again for what looked like a 55-yard score, but Eatonville’s Walker Bruun chased Whitaker down and punched the ball free at the goal line. The Cruisers recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchback.
The Cruisers could not capitalize on the touchback
and eventually turned the ball over on downs at the 28-yard line. Five plays later, Phelps connected with Whitaker again for a 13-yard Freeman score. Phelps ran the ball in for a successful two-point conversion, and the Scotties would take the lead back, 23-17.
On the next possession, the Cruisers started at their 34-yard line. They moved the ball to the Freeman 26 before turning it over on downs.
Eatonville council announces opposition to proposed airport sites in Pierce County
By Brett Davis | Contributing writer
At its Nov. 14 meeting, the Eatonville Town Council passed in workmanlike fashion a number of resolutions — mostly without any discussion or comment — on everything from tax levies to authorizing the mayor to purchase a new lightly used street sweeper.
The council unanimously passed the second reading of an ordinance increasing the property tax levy for the 2023 tax year in the amount of 1.67 percent, or $12,509.68.
The council also unanimously passed an increase in the property tax for the town’s emergency medical services of
50 cents per $1,000 of assessed value as authorized by voter approval on Aug. 2.
Also passed unanimously was a resolution authorizing the mayor to execute an interagency agreement with the Washington State Department of Ecology requesting an amendment to said agreement to include $35,000 related to the cleanup of a longabandoned landfill leased from Weyerhaeuser Co. that was used by the town for three decades.
Starting in 1950, Eatonville leased the land from Weyerhaeuser and used it as a landfill. The site was closed in 1980. State regulations for shutting down a landfill were followed, but concerns always remained about the site’s condition and
environmental impact.
Also:
• The council passed — again unanimously — a resolution in which the town states its opposition to two possible locations in Pierce County for a proposed new commercial airport in Washington state as part of a plan to deal with Seattle-Tacoma International Airport exceeding its capacity by 2050.
“Pierce County East” is the designation for a six-mile radius area south of Graham that includes state Route 161. “Pierce County Central” is a six-mile radius south of South Creek in an area where state Routes 702 and 7 converge.
• The council unanimously confirmed the mayor’s appointment of Nathon
Smith to the Planning Commission.
• Finally, the council unanimously passed a resolution authorizing the mayor to purchase a new or slightly used street sweeper and submit bids and sign documents to that effect.
Up to $100,000 is allocated from Eatonville’s share of federal American Rescue Act Plan Funds.
“What we have for you tonight is the solution where the council ultimately authorizes the mayor to purchase a street sweeper,” Councilmember Bill Dunn said.

A vegan dish for holiday diners
Courtesy Metro Creative Services
The holiday season has arrived, and that often means entertaining family and friends while serving tasty meals. When cooking for a crowd, it is important to recognize that individuals might have certain dietary restrictions due to health or personal beliefs, and to plan accordingly.
A greater number of people are eschewing meat and animal products for various reasons. Preparing offerings for vegan guests doesn’t have to be complicated. This recipe for “Nut Roast” from “Vegan Cooking for Beginners” (Publications International, Ltd.) by the PIL editors is like a meat loaf without the meat. It’s filling and hearty.
Nut Roast
Makes 6 to 8 servings
• 6 tablespoons boiling water
• 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed
• 1 ½ cups unsalted walnuts, pecans, almonds or cashews
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 1 onion, finely chopped
• 4 ounces cremini mushrooms (about 6 large), sliced
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 can (about 14 ounces) diced tomatoes
• 1 cup old-fashioned oats
• 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour or chickpea flour
• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh sage
• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
• 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme
• Salt and black pepper
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray 8-by-4-inch loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray. Combine boiling water and flaxseed in small bowl. Let stand until cool.
2. Place nuts in food processor. Pulse until finely chopped, allowing some larger pieces to remain. Transfer to large bowl.
3. Heat oil in medium skillet over medium heat. Add onion, mushrooms and garlic; cook and stir 3 minutes or until softened. Transfer mixture to bowl with nuts.
4. Stir in flaxseed mixture,
tomatoes, oats, flour, sage, parsley, thyme, salt, and pepper until combined. Spoon mixture into
prepared pan. Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until firm and browned. Cool slightly before slicing.

At least 40 state parks will host staff-led and self-guided hikes, snowshoe excursions, bike rides and more on New Year’s Day.
The First Day Hikes will range in difficulty from paved, flat ADA-accessible trails to moderate hill climbs. A few parks will host more than one hike, with options tailored to different interests and abilities. Additionally, some hikes will include educational talks where rangers will speak about the history and natural features of their parks.
Some First Day Hike adventures include:
• A 3-mile, ranger-led snowshoe hike at Easton Reload Sno-Park.
• A beginner and advanced guided bike ride at Fort Ebey State Park.
• A mile-long hike perfect for kids at Lake Sylvia State Park.
• A 1.5-mile interpretive history hike at Lincoln Rock State Park.
• A 1.5-mile guided snowshoe hike at Lake Wenatchee State Park
• ADA-accessible hikes at Columbia Plateau Trail State Park, Deception Pass State Park, Lime Kiln State Park, Rockport State Park, Sacajawea State Park and Seaquest State Park/Mount Saint Helens Visitor Center.
First Day Hikes is a national initiative led by America’s State Parks, encouraging people to get outdoors on New Year’s Day. Last year, nearly 55,000 people hiked more than 133,000 miles during free events throughout the nation.
Most First Day Hikes require advance registration, and group sizes might be limited. Additionally, select hikes will have snowshoes available for visitors to use.
Visit parks.wa.gov/1229/FirstDay-Hikes to view activities and registration information. New Year’s Day also marks the first state-managed land free day of 2023. Visitors will not need a Discover Pass to park on state recreation lands.

Savvy Senior: Daily money managers can help seniors with financial chores
Dear Savvy Senior, Can you recommend any services that can help my elderly mother with her financial chores? My dad always used to handle the bill-paying and paperwork, but he passed away last year, and mom struggles to keep on top of things. And I don’t live close enough to help her on a regular basis.
— Concerned Daughter
Dear Concerned,
It sounds like your mom could use a good daily money manager (or DMM). These are financial savvy professionals that can help older adults who have difficulty managing their own day-to-day personal financial affairs.
The types of services they provide typically includes paying bills, maintaining financial records, balancing checkbooks and negotiating with creditors. DMMs can also prepare checks for clients to sign, help older people organize bank and financial
records, prepare and deliver bank deposits, gather and organize documents for tax returns, help decipher medical bills, and review bank statements in order to detect potential financial abuse or fraud.
Where to Find DMMs
Depending on where your mom lives, DMM services might be available through private non-profit elder assistance organizations or government agencies. These agencies often use volunteers to provide basic DMM tasks, such as bill-paying, at no cost. To find out if this is available in your mom’s area contact her Area Aging Agency. Visit ElderCare.acl.gov or call 800-677-1116 for contact information.
In addition to the non-profit DMMs, an increasing number of individuals and private forprofit companies have started offering DMM services for a fee. Cost for these services varies by region but it often ranges between $25 and $100
per hour. Most clients need approximately four hours of services per month, but this too varies according to the complexity of the person’s financial situation.
The best place to look for a professional DMM in your mom’s area is through the American Association of Daily Money Managers (AADMM. com), which offers an online directory that lets you search by ZIP code. All the pros listed there have signed the group’s code of ethics. Some have passed a certification exam to earn the designation of Certified Daily Money Manager.
References are important Before hiring a daily money manager, however, get references from two or more of their clients and check them. Also, find out what they charge and what type of insurance coverage they have. Keep in mind that neither federal nor state governments regulate the DMM industry, so there is little oversight of these services.
So before turning over your mom’s bills, make certain it’s someone you can trust.
One other highly rated bill-paying service you should know about that’s specifically designed for older adults and caregivers is SilverBills (SilverBills.com). Available nationwide, this is a secure concierge bill management service that will manage your mom’s bills and pay them on her behalf, on-time and correctly, for a flat fee of $50 per month.
If you opt for this service, your mom will be paired with
an account manager who will communicate and work with her over the phone, or through email, text or mail (her preference) — no computer is required. SilverBills also reviews all bills for errors and fraud and provides monthly statements showing the date, amount and manner of each payment.

The Scotties then drove to the Cruiser 12yard line and turned it over on downs, as well.
With 12.4 seconds left in the game, Eatonville moved the ball to the 35-yard line, and with 1.4 seconds left on the clock had enough time for one play. That play was ultimately picked off by the Scotties, who downed the ball to seal the victory, 23-17.
“I am really proud of this senior class,” coach Gavin Kralik said. “They played a big part in accomplishing a 26-4 record over the past three seasons.”
Eatonville will graduate nine players from this year’s squad, including Kralik at quarterback, linebacker/tight end Jake Wood and linemen Kyle Cox, Tristan Lewis and Carsen Pero. Kralik has committed to play at Army next year, while Cox has committed to play at Boise State. The trio of Wood, Lewis and Pero have offers to play next season, but have yet to decide to which schools they will commit.
Final game for Kralik
This loss also marks the end of Gavin Kralik’s reign as head coach for the Cruisers as he announced before
the season started that he would be stepping down.
Kralik ends his coaching career with an overall 11377 record and was 47-18 in his six years as Eatonville’s head coach. In those six years, he guided his teams to five state appearances, one league title, two co-league titles and a runner-up finish at state in 2021.
“I am very thankful for having the opportunity to serve as head coach for the past six seasons,” Kralik shared after the game.
“Fantastic families, players, coaches and administrative
support have made it very special to coach at Eatonville. It is a very special community atmosphere that is uncommon.”
Defensive coordinator Rex Norris will take over the helm for the Cruisers.
“I am really excited for Coach Norris and what his leadership will provide to the people that are part of the program,” Kralik said. “[I’m] looking forward to the future of Eatonville football, while feeling nothing but gratitude for what the past six years have brought.”
