Cruisers receive Evergreen League honors
By Skip Smith
writer
The 2022 Evergreen League announced its AllLeague awards for this past fall sports season, and there were many Cruisers on the list.
After taking home a share of the 1A Evergreen League title during the regular season, the Eatonville Cruiser football team fared well in All-League awards with 13 players taking home postseason honors, as voted on by coaches in the league.
Job Kralik earned Evergreen League Offensive Co-MVP honors, sharing the award with Montesano's Jayden McElravy.
Kralik finished the season with 741 yards on 36for-51 passing and nine touchdowns. On the ground, he carried the ball 86 times, racking up 743 yards and 18 touchdowns and averaging 8.6 yards per carry. He also was named to the first team as a kicker. He converted 37-of-41 extra-point attempts and was 3-for-3 on field goal attempts, with his longest being 37 yards. He led the league in overall points scored with 160. Kralik received multiple offers from various colleges before deciding to commit to Army.
Junior Dylan Norman was named first team running back after he ran for 1,161 yards rushing on 182 carries, averaging 6.4 yards per carry and seven touchdowns.
Norman was the runnerup for the rushing title in the league, trailing Tenino’s Dylan Spicer who finished
with 1,481 yards.
Seniors Kyle Cox, Tristan Lewis and Carsen Pero were all named first team offensive linemen. Cox received nine offers from colleges before committing to Boise State. Lewis, who was also named a second team defensive lineman,
currently has offers from Eastern Washington and Portland State, but is still weighing his decision.
Pero has an offer from Whitworth.
Linebackers Payton Hanly and Max Henley rounded out the list of first-team selections for the Cruisers.

Council approves transportation, ferry improvement plans
By Brett Davis Contributing writer
The Pierce County Council unanimously adopted the 2023-28 Transportation Improvement Plan and the 2023-36 14-Year Ferry Program at its last meeting before Thanksgiving.
The Transportation Improvement Program outlines the county’s
future transportation plans. This transportation document is updated annually per state law.
Consideration of this ordinance was continued from the council’s Nov. 15 meeting for additional review.
The planning and programming documents related to the county’s transportation system identify
more than $336 million of capital expenditures via the Public Works Construction Fund and includes 86 projects.
Long-range maintenance and capital improvements for all major elements of the ferry system are also included in the ordinance passed by the council at its Nov. 22 meeting.
Major expenditures include $2.2
million to replace the Ketron Island ferry landing terminal that helps guide ships in and $1.2 million for the replacement or repair of components of the Anderson Island and Steilacoom ferry landings.
“Well, I’ll just thank the council and department staff for your hard work on this,” Council Chair Derek Young said.

Savvy Senior: How leg pains could be an early sign of heart attack or stroke
Dear Savvy Senior, I started a walking program a few months ago to help me lose weight, but I've been having problems with my legs and hips hurting during my walk, although they feel better once I stop. I thought it was just because I’m getting old, but my neighbor was telling me about a leg vein disease she has called PAD and thinks I may have something similar. What can you tell me about this?
— Limping Linda
Dear Linda,
The health condition your neighbor is telling you about is known as “peripheral arterial disease” (or PAD), which is an under-the-radar disease that affects approximately 8 to 12 million Americans.
It happens when the arteries that carry blood to the legs and feet become narrowed or clogged over the years with fatty deposits or plaque, causing poor circulation.
But you also need to be aware that because PAD is a systemic disease, people that have it are also much more likely to have clogged arteries in other areas of the body like the heart, neck and brain, which greatly increase the risks of heart attack or stroke.
Few symptoms
Unfortunately, PAD goes undiagnosed and untreated way too often because most people that have it experience few, if any symptoms. The most common symptom, however, is similar to
what you’re experiencing: pain and cramping in the hip, thigh or calf muscles, especially when walking or exercising but usually disappears after resting for a few minutes.
Another reason PAD is under-diagnosed is because many people assume that aches and pains go along with aging and simply live with it instead of reporting it to their doctor.
Other possible symptoms to be aware of include leg numbness or weakness, coldness or skin color changes in the lower legs and feet, or ulcers or sores on the legs or feet that don’t heal.
Are you at risk?
Like most other health conditions, the risk of developing PAD increases with age. Those most vulnerable are people over the age of 50 who smoke or used to smoke, have elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, are overweight or have a family history of PAD, heart
attack or stroke. African Americans are also twice as likely to have PAD as Caucasians.
If you’re experiencing any symptoms or if you’re at increased risk of PAD, you need to be tested by your doctor or a vascular specialist. He or she will probably perform a quick and painless ankle-brachial index test, which is done by measuring your blood pressure in your ankle as well as your arm and compare the two numbers. Your doctor may also do imaging tests such as ultrasound, magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), and computed tomographic (CT) angiography.
With early detection, many cases of PAD can be treated with lifestyle modifications including an improved diet, increased physical activity and smoking cessation.
If lifestyle changes aren’t enough, your doctor may also prescribe medicine to prevent blood clots, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and control pain and other symptoms. And for severe PAD, the treatment options are angioplasty (inflating a tiny balloon in the artery to restore blood flow then removed), the insertion or a stent to reopen the artery, or a graft bypass to reroute blood around the blockage.
To learn more about PAD, visit the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute at NHLBI.NIH. gov/health-topics/peripheral-artery-disease.

The Washington Avenue beautification project is moving along as expected. We have encountered multiple problems relating to challenges with burying utilities, due to large rocks and buried concrete structures, but have managed to develop work-arounds to get the utilities buried and keep on schedule. Thanks to the town electrical department for timely completing of the required rerouting of some of the electrical posts and wires coming into town to support this project and keep it on schedule.

The electrical pole on the east side of Washington Avenue is now gone, which improves the “look” of the town as you come up the hill and drive past Nevitt Park. Our long-term goal is to eventually bury these lines as well as all other electrical lines along Washington Avenue and Center Street East. Thanks to all the businesses who are having to deal with the challenges that go along with having a major construction project outside your entrance. Your patience is appreciated.
Revitalization of Mashell Avenue
A town hall meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Dec. 14 at the Eatonville Community Center to discuss previous efforts to restore and revitalize our downtown area (Mashell Avenue) and to look at implementing the Main Street Program to achieve this goal.
Those with an interest in restoring business vitality, historical and cultural activities, livability, pedestrianfriendly improvements and pride in our downtown are invited. Property and business owners, nonprofit organizations, historians, entrepreneurs, bankers, town residents and anyone who does business in town is invited to attend. Thanks to Bob Walter, who has signed us up as a Main Street affiliate and will be facilitating this meeting.
If you can’t make the town hall meeting, you can still participate by submitting your ideas and questions related to downtown revitalization. Email Bob Walter at senemaat@ rainierconnect.com, or call 253-9880904.
Looking for volunteers
• Web page design. The Town of Eatonville web page needs to be updated and we do not currently have available funds to do an update. If anyone has web page design experience and is willing to help us out, we would love to hear from you.
• In-town projects. We would like to do a group volunteer activity one Saturday per month that focuses on things that need to be done within the Eatonville town limits. We are searching for someone who would like to volunteer to lead and coordinate these activities.
• Excel guru. We are starting to utilize Excel more aggressively with town projects (such as budgeting) and could use the help of someone who is an Excel power user/expert.
• Arts and culture enthusiasts. One of our current community goals is to bring more artwork to the walking areas of the town. We would like to develop an arts and culture team to assist with developing goals and suggesting which artwork to bring to town, as well as facilitate the actual installation of that targeted artwork.
• Comprehensive Plan Update team. Four to five individuals are needed to participate, on a volunteer basis, as part of the town’s required update to its Comprehensive Plan. These volunteers will review and update the Visioning Statement in the Comprehensive Plan, and they will participate in drafting an inventory of current conditions, trends and identifying issues that impact multiple interests addressed within the plan. Each member should expect to be involved over the next two years. If you are interested in participating, please send an email to Eatonville.comp.plan.22@gmail. com.
• Comprehensive Plan Climate committee. Four to five individuals are needed to comprise a committee conducting an assessment with the public regarding the identification of measures to reduce greenhouse gas, the town’s vulnerability and risk assessment. This committee will meet, draft a report and brief policymakers and the planning commission on the impact of climate as a consideration of the comprehensive plan update. Each member should expect to be involved over the next two years. If you are interested in participating, please send an email to Eatonville.comp.plan.22@ gmail.com.
A special thanks to Karen Woodcock and the Eatonville Business Association for the Dec. 3 Christmas parade. Happy Holidays to all!

Whip up a meal for quick entertaining
Courtesy Metro Creative Solutions
Entertaining guests is a labor of love. Much effort goes into preparing a home for the arrival of friends and family, and that includes planning a menu that will accommodate as many people as possible.
Hosts and hostesses who are looking to take some of the work off of their plates can explore recipes that are less labor-intensive. Slow cookers are the unsung heroes of the kitchen. While busy families often use them to prepare weeknight meals, slow cookers also can be used when cooking for crowds. In such instances, they free up time for party hosts to tackle other jobs.
This recipe for “Sweet Southern SlowCooker Ham,” courtesy of the National Pork Board and Yummly, utilizes a fully cooked, store-bought ham and some sweet and savory accoutrements. The ham can be served on its own or be used to create delicious sliders. Since it serves 12, it's the perfect meal for a
crowd.
Sweet Southern Slow-Cooker Ham
Serves 12
• 1 bone-in fully cooked ham (about 5 1/2 pounds)
• 1 cup apple cider
• ½ cup dark brown sugar
• 1/3 cup bourbon (preferably Kentucky)
• ¼ cup honey
• ¼ cup Dijon style mustard
• 4 sprigs fresh thyme
Place the ham in a large slow cooker. Whisk the cider with the brown sugar, bourbon, honey, and mustard. Slowly pour over the ham. Scatter the thyme sprigs into the slow cooker. Cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 8 hours, or until very tender. Remove ham to rest on a cutting board. Pass the remaining cooking liquid through a fine mesh sieve into a saucepan. Simmer for 10 minutes or until slightly reduced. Cut the ham
