The Eatonville boys' wrestling team showcased their prowess at the Patriot Dome tournament hosted by Washington High School, while the girls' team made a notable appearance at the Jump On In 2023 tournament at Yelm High School. In a remarkable performance, seven varsity wrestlers from Eatonville secured top-five finishes at the Patriot Dome tournament: • Kasey Whitney emerged victorious, claiming the 1st place title in the 144-pound category. • Jake Ostendorf displayed resilience, earning a 2nd place finish at 165 pounds. • Trey Sta Rosa secured a 3rd place spot in the 157-pound category. • Ethan Rogers fought hard and earned a 3rd place finish at 190 pounds. • Bryan Boers, wrestling in the 106-pound division, claimed a respectable 5th place. • Jaxon Wood and Jameson Beckord also secured 5th place finishes at 120 and 175 pounds, respectively. The junior varsity wrestlers also made their mark with five athletes placing in the top five: • Michael Beaupre clinched the 1st place title at 157 pounds. • Logan Shipman secured a 3rd place finish at 190 pounds.

Strong start for Eatonville Lady Cruiser Basketball with back-to-back victories By Skip Smith

In their season opener, the Eatonville Cruisers triumphed over the Morton-White Pass Timberwolves with a final score of 69-59. The Cruisers set the tone early, establishing an 18-8 lead after the first quarter and extending it to an 18-point advantage at its peak. Although the Timberwolves managed to narrow the gap to as little as five points in the fourth quarter, the Cruisers maintained composure and ultimately clinched

the victory by a margin of 10 points. Junior guard Bailey Andersen played a pivotal role in the Cruisers' success, leading the team with 25 points. Junior Lilian Bickford contributed 10 points, while senior Ryan Stammen and junior Hailey Hall added nine and eight points, respectively. Hall also stood out on the boards, securing eight rebounds to share the team lead with senior Sara Smith. "We played hard throughout the whole game despite the amount of fouls. Savvy Senior: Smart home devices to help seniors age in place

ear Savvy Senior, I’ve been talking to my mobility challenged mother, who lives alone, about automating her house with some smart home products to make it more convenient. She’s very interested but we’d like to get your opinion as to which types of smart devices are most helpful for seniors aging in place. Searching Daughter Dear Searching, If your mother is game, smart home products – such as smart lights, video doorbells and voiceactivated speakers – can be very useful for aging in place. These devices can add safety and convenience to a home by providing voice and app-controlled operation, which is extremely helpful for seniors who have mobility issues or reduced vision. Smart home technology can also provide family members peace-of-mind by giving them the ability to electronically keep tabs on their elder loved one when they can’t be there. If you’re interested in adding some smart home products to your mom’s house, she’ll need home

Adobe Stock Image Wi-Fi installed, and she’ll need either a smartphone, tablet or smart speaker to operate them. To help you get started, here are some different types of devices to consider that are very helpful to older adults. Smart speakers: A smart speaker – like the Amazon Echo, Google Nest or Apple HomePod – can serve as the brains of a smart home, controlling the devices with voice commands or automating them. These devices can also play your mom’s favorite music, read audiobooks, make calls, set timers and alarms, provide reminders for

medications, appointments and other things, check traffic and weather, answer questions, call for help in emergency situations and much more – all done by voice commands. Smart light bulbs: To help prevent home falls – which are often caused by fumbling around a dark room looking for a light switch – smart light bulbs will let your mom turn on and off the lights by voice command, smartphone or tablet. These bulbs can also change brightness and color and be programmed to come on and off whenever she wants. Smart plugs: These small

units plug into a standard outlet and connect to the internet. That means your mom can control whatever she plugs into them – from a space heater to a coffee maker – using her voice or phone. Video doorbell: Safety is also a concern for older adults, especially those who live alone. A video doorbell would let your mom see and speak to visitors at the door without having to walk over and open it. Smart locks: For convenience and safety, smart locks would give your mom keyless entry to her home, provide customized access to family, friends and caregivers, and let you monitor who comes and goes from your mom’s house. Smart thermostat: This lets your mom preprogram or manually control the temperature in her home with voice command or via phone, and let you monitor it too. Smart smoke alarms: These will alert your mom when smoke or carbon monoxide is detected and will also send alerts to your phone if a problem is detected. Stovetop shut-off: To

prevent home cooking fires, smart stovetop shut-off devices, like the IGuardStove, will turn off electric and gas stovetops when left unattended, and will alert you via text. Medical alert system: These devices provide wearable wrist and/or necklace emergency buttons that would allow your mom to call for help if she were to fall or need assistance. Many systems today also provide voice activated and fall detection features, and caregiver tracking apps that will let you keep tabs on her. Cameras and smart sensors: If your mom needs more in-depth monitoring, there are indoor cameras you can install so you can see, hear and talk to her from your phone. Or, if that’s too intrusive, you can install smart contact sensors on her doors so you can know when she comes and goes, or on her refrigerator door so you can know if she’s eating. Cruiser boys basketball navigate early season rollercoaster By Skip Smith

The Eatonville Cruisers embarked on their early-season journey with a rollercoaster of emotions, showcasing resilience, offensive prowess, and areas for improvement in their first three matchups. The season opener against Rainier proved to be a test of character for the Cruisers. Despite trailing for a substantial portion of the game, they orchestrated a comeback, outscoring the Rainier Mountaineers 17-9 in the final frame to secure a nail-biting 6459 victory. Senior Mark Nueva emerged as a force to be reckoned with, leading the charge with a game-high 19 points. Hunter Klumpar complemented Nueva's performance, contributing 12 points and commanding the boards with a team-high 7 rebounds. A notable feature of their success was the balanced contribution, with seven different players making an impact on the stat sheet. Griffin Clevenger and Michael Stogsdill each tallied nine points, while freshman Amari Samuel showcased promise with eight points. Head Coach TJ Cotterill commended the team's defensive grit, citing it as the decisive factor in their triumph. Cotterill also highlighted Logan Taylor's disruptive defensive efforts and acknowledged Michael Stogsdill's growth on the defensive end. The game revealed both the

Transitioning to their second game, the Cruisers hosted the Black Hills Wolves in a matchup that saw the lead swing back and forth. Senior Hunter Klumpar delivered a standout performance, notching a career-high 25 points, including six three-pointers. Mark Nueva continued his sharp shooting with 13 points, but the Cruisers fell short in the final stretch, allowing the Wolves to secure a 60-54 victory. Griffin Clevenger contributed eight points and eight rebounds, while Amari Samuel and Favien Pina added seven and two points, respectively. The game showcased the Cruisers' ability to compete at a high level, emphasizing the need for consistency and clutch performances in crunch time. The week concluded with a road trip to face Cascade Christian, resulting in a 59-34 loss. Cascade Christian's early 10-0 run set the tone, putting the Cruisers at a seven-point deficit heading into the second quarter. Despite valiant efforts, the Cruisers struggled to contain Cascade Christian's offense, trailing 31-10 at halftime. This is illustrated by the recent awards that Eatonville students have received. Our EHS Swimmers are the 2023 WIAA 1A/2A Academic State Champions! They had an average GPA of 3.634 and were honored at the Washington State Swim Meet. Our EHS boys tennis took home the Nisqually League Team Sportsmanship Award! Our student athletes are great because of the support that they get at home as well as from their coaches. It is nice when our coaches are recognized for the countless hours that they spend teaching our students the fundamentals of the sport as well as lessons that will carry over well past the season. This year, Machaela Swartout, our head girls soccer coach, was nominated by the Evergreen 1A league as the Coach of the Year! MaryAnn Baker, who has been a tennis coach for 37 years, was recently honored with the U.S. Army Salute to a Coach Award for personifying the U.S. Army values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. LEVY FORUM AND INFORMATION I want to thank the 75 community members who attended our public levy forum as well as the 200+ people who filled out our levy survey. We shared your ideas and priorities with members of our school board and together, designed our levy measures to reflect your priorities. Now that the school board has passed a resolution to run an Education Programs and Operations Levy and a Capital Levy, we can now officially share levy information with you to make sure that you have all of the information you need as voters for the upcoming February 2024 election. If you desire further information, please do not hesitate to contact me . The child has lived outside the home of the biological mother for a period of time exceeding six (6) months, during which time the biological mother; (i) has willfully failed to visit the minor child; and (ii) has willfully failed to maintain contact with the subject minor child, despite the absence of any restriction or prevention from contact or visitation by Court Order or by actions of the Plaintiffs, and, therefore the parental rights of the biological mother should be terminated pursuant to South Carolina Code Section 63-7-2570 (3). d. Pursuant to South Carolina Code Section 63-7-2570(4), the child has lived outside the home of the parent for a period of over six months and during that time the biological mother has willfully failed to support the child. e. Pursuant to South Carolina Code Section 63-7-2570(6), on information and belief, the parent has a diagnosable condition(s), including drug or alcohol addiction, which are unlikely to change within a reasonable time, and such conditions make it unlikely that the parent will be able to provide minimally acceptable care for the child. f. Pursuant to South Carolina Code Section 63-7-2570(7), the child has been

abandoned by the biological mother, as defined in Section 63-7-20. 9. The child has thrived in the care of Plaintiffs. Amari Samuel led the scoring with 9 points, Griffin Clevenger added 8, and Hunter Klumpar contributed 5. Dylan Norman and Mark Nueva each chipped in 4 points, while Nate Goode and Logan Taylor rounded out the scoring with 2 points apiece. As the Cruisers navigate this early-season rollercoaster, the lessons learned from victories and defeats alike will undoubtedly shape their journey ahead. BASKETBALL from Page 1Æ Cougars, 48-33. Opening with an 11-point lead at the end of the first quarter, the Cruisers initiated a 5-0 run at the start of the second, extending their lead to 16 points. The Cougars fought back, narrowing the deficit to 10 at halftime. Foul trouble again challenged the Cruisers, as they placed Cascade Christian into the bonus early in the second quarter. Fortunately, the Cougars struggled to convert free throws. Despite facing foul trouble, key players like Bickford, Stammen, and Ella Gendreau played the fourth quarter on the brink of fouling out but maintained their composure. The Cruisers started the final quarter with a 4-0 run, closing out the game with a 15-point lead and securing their second victory of the season. "We seem to be cleaning things up each game. We were once again able to get solid minutes from our bench. I am really proud of how well the girls played as a team tonight,” Andersen said. In terms of scoring totals, Stammen led the way with 15 points, followed by Andersen with 14 and Bickford with 10. Hall contributed seven points and nine rebounds, while Smith added two points. With a perfect 2-0 record, the Eatonville Cruisers look forward to building on their early-season success. The Cruisers played Monday and Tuesday night, results were unavailable as of press time. On Saturday, the Cruisers are hosting Orting at 5:30 p.m.
