Cruisers soccer splits two games

The Eatonville Cruiser boys soccer team faced a week of intense matchups on their home turf, contending with unpredictable weather and a field rendered almost unplayable by mud and waterlogged conditions.

Despite the challenges, they showcased grit in clashes against the Tenino Beavers and the Raymond/ Southbend Ravens.

In their first matchup against Tenino, the Cruisers found themselves grappling with a saturated field that made ball control and accurate passing a formidable task. Nevertheless, they maintained possession throughout the game, engaging in a back-andforth struggle with their opponents. The deadlock persisted until late in the match when a moment of brilliance from keeper Nate Goode set up Ignacio Sanz, whose precision pass found Austin Quirie in prime position to slot the ball home. The

Cruiser track and field shines at home meet

The Eatonville Cruiser track and field team continued to showcase their domination on March 28 during a home meet.

The boys' squad secured their third first-place finish of the season. Meanwhile, the girls' team demonstrated their strength, earning a second-place finish.

Standout performances from the boys' team included Keith Smith's firstplace victory in the 100m dash; Colton Rush's top finish in the 1600m race; and the impressive showing by the 4x100m relay team comprising Riley Hill, Jacob Simons, Logan Taylor and Keith Smith.

Additionally, the 4x400m relay team, consisting of Cole Bamford, Oscar Lopez-Diaz, Colton Rush, and Joey Callon, showcased their dominance with another first-place finish. Carter Taylor soared to a first-place finish in the Pole Vault, achieving a personal best of 13’, while Logan Taylor leaped to a season high of 38’3” to clinch the

top spot in the triple jump.

On the girls' side, senior Ryan Stammen stole the spotlight, claiming first place in two events. Stammen showcased her prowess in the Javelin with a remarkable throw of 97’ 1.5” and achieved a personal best in the Pole Vault with a jump of 7’9”. Stammen would also record personal bests in the Shot Put and Discus events.

Nikia King impressed with a firstplace finish in the 100m race with a personal best time of 14.42, while Kelani Monserrate clocked a personal best of 1:04.44 in the 400m race to secure first place. Hannah Bieker dominated the 3200m race, crossing the finish line with a time of 13:56.20.

Lily Lightfoot displayed her agility, claiming the top spot in both the 100m Hurdles with a time of 18.82 and the Triple Jump with a leap of 28’. Lady Cruiser tennis team faces first loss of season Cruiser baseball drops three games

It was a challenging week for the Eatonville Cruiser baseball team as it went winless in all three of their games, dropping their season record to 1-6.

The first defeat unfolded on March 26, as the Cruisers endured a 4-3 loss against the Elma Eagles. Notable performances included Owen Archer's 2-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base, Ethan Evans' 2-for3 with a double and 1 run scored, and Will Sepich's 2-for-4. Pitcher Payton Hanly's commendable 7 innings on the mound, marked by 13 strikeouts, unfortunately couldn't salvage the game. Owen Archer was handed the loss, yielding 1 run on 2 hits in his two innings of pitching.

March 28, proved to be equally challenging as the Cruisers faced a doubleheader against the Tenino Beavers. In the first game,

a 18-3 loss ensued, plagued by four costly errors. Despite efforts to respond, including Aaron Tozier and Brody Thirtyacre's offensive contributions, the Cruisers couldn't stem the Beavers' relentless attack. Colton Herbrand's start on the mound was marred by nine runs over two innings, leading to the eventual mercy rule-shortened loss.

The second game of the doubleheader offered no respite, with the Tenino Beavers winning 13-0. Michael Stogsdill's lead the team with a 2-for-3 hitting performance. Pitcher Aaron Leiter's efforts fell short, with relief pitchers Brody Thirtyacre and Aaron Tozier unable to stave off the Beavers' offensive onslaught.

Looking ahead, the Cruisers aim to reverse their fortunes when they face the 1-8 Lake Lancers on Tuesday, April 2, with hopes of sparking a much-needed turnaround.

The Eatonville Cruiser girls tennis team suffered their first loss of the season against White Salmon.

Their week started with a stellar performance against Montesano, clinching a 3-2 win. Lillian Bickford and Alayna Meyer secured a doubles victory with a score of 6-3, 7-5.

Meanwhile, the duo of Jessie Zumwalt and Megan Blake dominated at the number two doubles position, claiming victory with scores of 6-3, 6-1. Jennavieve Smith sealed the deal for the Cruisers with a dominant performance in the number three singles match, finishing with a score of 6-0, 6-2. However, Bailey Andersen and Kate Marsh faced

tough opponents in their singles matches, resulting in losses with scores of 6-1, 6-2, and 6-2, 6-2, respectively.

Despite their strong start, the Cruisers encountered formidable opposition in their match against White Salmon, ultimately suffering a 3-2 loss. Blake and Zumwalt won by scores of 7-6, 6-2. Smith emerged victorious with scores of 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Sophomore standout Isabel Volk displayed remarkable determination in her number one singles match, pushing her senior opponent to three sets before ultimately falling with scores of 7-5, 1-6, 1-6. However, Marsh faced a tough challenge at number two singles, suffering a loss. Meyer and Bickford lost their first match of the season,1-6, 3-6.

Accessorize your food with a spring salsa

Alittle of this, a little of that, with inspiration from the springtime farmers market: A salsa is more than a red or green sauce drizzled over a taco. Salsas are wonderful mashes of garden herbs, sweet and spicy peppers, aromatics and citrus. Delightfully fresh and usually raw, salsas provide brightness and zing to an assortment of meats, fish, vegetables and grains.

Mellow green garlic and juicy sweet Meyer lemons rule this springtime salsa. They are blitzed together in a chunky sauce with green chiles and leafy herbs. The key to a good salsa is to hit all the flavor components, and this salsa does just that: Sweet and sharp citrus, laced with skulking chile heat, mingles with spring garlic.

Green garlic is available in early spring at the markets. It resembles a thick scallion with the unmistakable pungency of garlic, but without the bite typically found in mature bulbs. The newest stalks have small, baby bulbs, which are tender and edible, along with the green leaves when the garlic is young. As the garlic matures, the green stalks will toughen like a leek, in which case the stalks should be omitted.

Meyer lemon is another springtime star. Unlike the ubiquitous Eureka, Meyers have an edible rind, and the whole lemon can be added to the salsa. Coarsely chop the lemon and nick away any small seeds. Add the lemon and any juices to the bowl. Meyers are fruity, bright and less puckery than Eureka lemons and add a wonderful citrusy freshness.

This salsa is extremely versatile. It's a brilliant accompaniment to fish and light meats, as well as roasted and grilled vegetables and potatoes. You can also toss chopped cooked potatoes with a generous amount of the salsa for a green and fresh potato salad. A few tips: If green garlic is not available, substitute 2 to 3 scallions and one garlic clove. Remember to taste the jalapeno and poblano before adding, as they can vary in heat, then adjust the amounts to your taste.

lone goal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory for the Cruisers, much to the delight of their home crowd.

However, Wednesday's encounter with the Raymond/Southbend Ravens presented even greater challenges as the field deteriorated and was more difficult to play on. Despite the adverse conditions, the Cruisers managed to seize an early 1-0 lead through Quirie's opportunistic follow. However, the slippery surface played havoc with their ability to judge opponents' passes, leading to costly errors that allowed Raymond to capitalize and establish a commanding 4-1 lead by halftime.

Undeterred by the deficit, the Cruisers regrouped during halftime, implementing tactical adjustments that breathed new life into their performance. A quick goal

early in the second half injected renewed hope into the team, fueling their relentless pursuit of an equalizer. Despite dominating possession and limiting Raymond's chances, the Cruisers were repeatedly thwarted by narrow misses and outstanding saves by the opposing goalkeeper.

The defeat marked an end to the Cruisers' four-game winning streak. With upcoming home matches against the Elma Eagles on Monday, April 8, and the Montesano Bulldogs on Wednesday, April 10, the Cruisers remain determined to bounce back and reclaim their winning form. In particular, they eagerly anticipate the opportunity to avenge their earlier 5-0 loss to the first place Bulldogs and move up in the league standings.

As they approach the midpoint of the season, the Cruisers look poised for a second half surge.

Smith leads Lady Cruisers to doubleheader sweep against Tenino

The Lady Cruiser fastpitch team swept a doubleheader against the Tenino Beavers this past Friday.

In the first game, held at Tenino, Sara Smith led Eatonville's offensive charge, contributing to seven of the team's 11 runs. Smith's standout performance included a 3-4 hitting display, highlighted by a secondinning double driving in one run, followed by a single in the third inning with two RBI. The climax came in the fifth inning when Smith hammered a grand slam over the left-field fence, her second of the season. Amy Tozier also contributed with a 2-for2 performance, including a double and two RBI. Smith's versatility extended to the pitcher's mound, where she pitched a no-hitter, striking out nine Beaver batters.

In the subsequent game of the doubleheader, the Cruisers continued their dominance, clinching an 11-6 victory over the Beavers. Once again, Smith played a pivotal role, going 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI. The game, tied at 5 apiece going into the sixth inning, witnessed Eatonville exploding with six runs, highlighted by Smith's basesloaded double, which drove in four.

Contributions across the roster were evident with Grace Field going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, Ava Twedt going 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Morgan Laird going 1-for-5 with a double. Smith secured the win from the pitcher's circle, pitching six innings,

conceding three runs on four hits, and striking out five, while Laird provided solid relief pitching.
