CRUISERS EQUESTRIAN TEAM GALLOPS TO GLORY
By Skip Smith Contributing WriterThe Eatonville High School Equestrian Team demonstrated their skill over the Easter weekend at the Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds, delivering a stellar performance that left spectators in awe and competitors in admiration.
For the Eatonville team several standout performances took place. What's more, achieving state qualification by the second meet is a significant accomplishment, underscoring the team's prowess and determination.

At the forefront of their success was Jaida Green. Green secured an impressive four state qualifiers out of her five individual events. From clinching first place in stock seat and trail equitation to securing second in hunt seat and third in dressage, Green's performances were a
testament to her skill and dedication. And with a fourth-place finish in showmanship, she showcased her versatility
and poise in the arena. But Green wasn't the only one leaving a mark on the competition. Heidi Weaver, Ava Weaver,

In a hard-fought battle on the diamond, the Eatonville Cruisers faced off against the Lakes Lancers April 2, resulting in a 3-0 loss for the Cruisers at home. The loss marks the seventh consecutive setback for the Cruisers this season. The game remained deadlocked through the first five innings, with both teams struggling to gain an advantage. Despite starting the game feeling under the weather, Eatonville's Payton Hanly delivered a resilient performance on the mound, limiting the Lancers to just three hits and striking out nine batters. However, after reaching a pitch count of 90, Hanly was relieved by Owen Archer, who faced tough opposition from Lakes' offense.
Lakes broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning, capitalizing on a double by pitcher Aaron Miller to drive in a run. An error further boosted
Lakes' lead, with a subsequent wild pitch extending their advantage to three runs.
Offensively, Michael Stogsdill provided the lone bright spot for the Cruisers, notching two singles to left and center fields, the only two Cruiser hits of the game.
Aaron Miller secured the win for Lakes, while Owen Archer was credited with the loss for Eatonville.
Looking ahead, the Cruisers aim to turn their fortunes around as they prepare to face the Vashon Pirates at home on April 8. They will then continue their quest for a league victory as they host the Montesano Bulldogs on Tuesday. The week concludes with a doubleheader against the Hoquiam Grizzlies on Saturday, April 13, with the first game slated to begin at noon.

Various factors driving up car insurance premiums in Washington state
By Carleen Johnson The Center SquareOn the heels of a double-digit increase last year, Washington state drivers can expect to pay even more for auto insurance this year.
A report by personal finance website Value Penguin estimates Evergreen State motorists will see the second biggest increase in premiums in the nation this year, at 18%.
“There are a couple of reasons for this,” said Aaron VanTuyl, communications director with the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner.
“The average rate weighted rate increase was 24.7% in 2023 and it is high, but prior to that we had a 2.8% increase in 2022, and no change either way in 2021. Last year was preceded by five years of very little change.”
So why have rates gone up so much, even for good drivers?
“Rates go up with the cost for paying out other insurance claims,” VanTuyl explained. Payout costs have seen a major increase.
“The severity of auto accidents for serious injury and fatal crashes over the last few years has pushed out the price of paying out claims way up,” VanTuyl noted.
Data from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission shows traffic fatalities from 2018 to 2022 increased significantly. The expectation is that traffic fatalities for 2023 will be the highest in decades.
HORSES from Page 1Æ
Ella Stephen, Taylor Payne, and Peyton Barney all contributed to the team's success.
In the team events, the Eatonville squad continued to impress, demonstrating their unity and skill in every maneuver. Notably, the Drill 6-person team captured second place and secured their spot for the state competition, while the Canadian flags team mirrored their success, further solidifying the team's dominance in the arena.
With 12 athletes already qualified for state after the second meet and four more on the cusp of qualification, the Eatonville High School Equestrian Team is poised for continued success.
Coach Michelle Woolf was proud of her team and how well they have worked together.
“Our team is largely made up of riders new to competition,” Woolf

Another factor contributing to the increased cost of paying out claims: the actual vehicles.
“Cars are way more valuable, whether it’s a new car or a used car,” VanTuyl noted. “The cost of replacing cars and parts and everything about it just went way up. On top of that with new technology with vehicles, it’s another factor on top of everything.”
He summed it up by noting, “Rates go up when the costs involved with repairing or replacing cars goes up.”
That it’s more expensive to repair and replace modern automobiles was a major factor in
said. “We have a few seasoned veterans who place well but I am so proud of how they help the new athletes and help each other out to learn new things, set goals. It is so great to hear all the positive encouragement to each other and watch them be successful on many different levels. Even our new riders are setting personal bests at every meet and hitting state goals.” Woolf went on to praise the rider’s parents as well.
“This team has amazing parents who stand behind their athletes 100%. They are the ones who make it possible to get these kids and their horses out to have great practice time. We came in the underdogs but these girls are really doing a fantastic job of putting the pressure on the other teams. I can't wait to watch meet 3,” she said.
Eatonville’s next meet is April 26 at the Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds in ElmaTop of Form.
last year’s 24% premium hike.
“Cars are more technologically advanced, which means the cost of repairs, both in parts and in expertise of finding somebody that knows how to work on them is also going to go up,” VanTuyl said.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the cost of car maintenance and repairs has gone up 36.2% from January 2019 to January 2024.
The Office of the Insurance Commissioner says insurance companies consider several factors in determining rates, including age, gender, marital status, vehicle driven, location, miles driven, driving record, credit score and credit history.
Most insurance companies offer discounts based on behavior and/ or the bundling of insurance plans.

Savvy Senior: Recommended vaccines for Medicare recipients
DEAR SAVVY SENIOR,
My husband and I recently turned 65 and would like to find out which vaccines are recommended and covered by Medicare? New Beneficiaries
DEAR NEW,
All recommended vaccines for adults, age 65 and older, should be covered by either Medicare Part B or Part D, but there are some coverage challenges you should be aware of. Here’s a rundown of which vaccines are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and how Medicare covers them.
Covid-19: Even though Covid-19 is no longer a public health emergency, it can still cause severe illness, particularly in older adults. Because the Covid virus continues to mutate, new vaccines are being developed to keep pace, so the CDC recommends that all seniors stay up to date with the latest Covid vaccines, including booster shots.
All Covid-19 shots are covered 100 percent by Medicare Part B.
Flu: Considered an annual vaccination, most people of all ages receive flu shots in the fall when flu season begins. The CDC recommends seniors, 65 and older get a high-dose flu shot for extra protection beyond what a standard flu shot offers. The Fluzone High Dose Quadrivalent, FLUAD Quadrivalent and FluBlok Quadrivalent are your three options. Annual flu shots are covered under Medicare Part B.
Pneumonia: These vaccines help protect against pneumococcal disease, which can cause pneumonia, meningitis and other infections. The CDC recommends everyone 65 and older get a pneumococcal vaccine. There are several different vaccine options available, so talk to your doctor or pharmacists to find out which is best for you or visit the CDC’s Pneumococcal Vaccination webpage at CDC.gov/vaccines/vpd/pneumo/ public/index.html.
Medicare Part B covers both single dose and two-dose pneumococcal shots once in your lifetime.
Shingles: Caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox, shingles is a painful, blistering skin rash that affects more than 1 million Americans every year. All people over age 50 are recommended to get the two-dose Shingrix vaccine, which is given two to six months
apart, even if you previously received Zostavax. In 2020, Shingrix replaced Zostavax, which is no longer available in the U.S.
All Medicare Part D prescription drug plans cover shingles vaccinations, but coverage amounts, and reimbursement rules vary depending on where the shot is given. Check your plan.
Tdap: Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) are diseases caused by bacteria that can lead to serious illness and death. Therefore, a one-time dose of the Tdap vaccine is recommended to all adults. If you’ve already had a Tdap shot, you should get a tetanusdiphtheria (Td) booster shot every 10 years.
All Medicare Part D plans cover these vaccinations.
RSV: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can lead to pneumonia or bronchiolitis and can worsen other chronic conditions common among older adults, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The CDC recommends all adults, age 60 and older, talk to their doctor about getting one of the RSV vaccines (either Arexvy or Abrysvo), usually in the fall and winter months when the virus is most prevalent.
Most Medicare Part D plans cover the RSV vaccine, but not all. If your plan doesn’t cover it, you can ask for a coverage exception. You can also pay for the shot out of pocket and then follow-up with your plan to get reimbursed. If you pay for the shot upfront, your plan must pay you back.
OTHER VACCINATIONS
There are other vaccines you may need depending on your health, lifestyle or travel plans. To help you get a handle on which ones are appropriate for you, take the CDC’s What Vaccines Do You Need? quiz at www2.cdc.gov/nip/ adultimmsched. Also, talk to your doctor during your next visit about what vaccinations you should get.

Gov. Inslee signs bill making it harder to dissolve library districts
By TJ Martinell The Center SquareGov. Jay Inslee has signed into law a bill that changes the process for how library districts can be dissolved. The measure was filed in response to a recent attempt to do so in a southwestern Washington town.
Last year, a group of individuals in Columbia County opposed to what they considered to be sexually charged reading materials being marketed to children almost managed to get a vote on the November ballot dissolving the rural library district, but the vote was prevented by a court order. The dissolution vote required 100 signatures to get on the ballot, while the people who lived in the city of Dayton, where the library was physically located, were not allowed to vote.
SB 5824 changes state law by increasing the signature threshold for petitions to dissolve libraries from 100 taxpayers to 25% of eligible voters in the district. Also, all qualified voters in the districts are allowed to vote on whether to
dissolve the library district. The bill passed unanimously in the Senate, while receiving just five opposing votes in the House. At the bill’s March 26 signing, Inslee said that “allowing all impacted voters to participate ensures the will of the community is heard.
Libraries bring vital resources to our communities and this bill will allow more people to participate in elections that impact them. (I’m) glad the people of Dayton are continuing to have access to good reading material.”
In a press release statement, SB 5824 sponsor Sen. Sam Hunt, D-Olympia, wrote that “the Dayton library was on the verge of becoming the first library in the country to shut down because of a dispute over the books inside. We’re just trying to give all people a fair say in what happens to their library and not let minority rule.”
The bill takes effect on June 6.
