Queen Anne Resident Jill Gallagher had no way of knowing just how successful her Facebook auction would be. “I’m raising money for the wildfire relief for Australia, the bushfires,” she said. “Both helping with the animals and the firefighters. And then some of the relief that they are going to need for the next probably decade, based on how much of their county has burned.” At first, she donated $50 herself, and
then thought that, with an auction where people donate items and then others bid on them, she could increase that number tenfold. Her actual results speak for themselves. As of Friday, Feb. 21, Gallagher had raised almost $48,000 since Jan. 4. There is still time to participate in the auction. Simply got to www.facebook. com/groups/2464020217043588/about/ or search “Aussie Fire Auction” on Facebook to participate. The auction ends Saturday, Feb. 29. They way it works is every day Galla-
gher puts a new batch of items up for bid — usually about five items per day. “Sometimes I do themes, just for fun,” she said. “And sometimes it’s kind of a random day.” Next, she puts up a description of the item, complete with a photo of what people will be bidding on. “I have a very kind of snarky sense of humor, so I usually post something dorky and snarky in the descriptions, so that people are… enjoying themselves while AUCTION, Page 12
Maxwell Hotel strives to be a good neighbor By Daniel Warn
QA&Mag News editor
Uptown’s Maxwell Hotel’s staff want it to be an integral thread in the fabric of Queen Anne. Lacey King, general manager, and Barbara Young, sales manager, said that’s why they hosted a complimentary happy hour in the Hotel’s Pineapple Bistro & Bar last week. Folks were invited to join the hotel in drinks and tasty bites of food. The hotel will be hosting another community happy hour from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday,
March 24. The Pineapple Bistro & Bar is a relatively new addition to the hotel, having opened in July of 2018. King said they transformed part of the lobby area into the bistro and bar to create another amenity for the guests — something to enhance that guest experience. Not just for convenience, but also to “do ordinary food extraordinarily well.” “We like to say we are in Queen Anne’s living room,”

HOTEL, from Page 1 King said. “We try to make that connection, and with our new addition of the Pineapple Bistro & Bar we are definitely looking to grow our relationship as well.” Young said that the great thing about having the Pineapple Bistro & Bar in the lobby area is it really opened up the space and made it more welcoming. “So whether you’re a neighbor that lives nearby, if you’re a guest that is staying in the hotel — anyone coming through we want to invite you to have a drink at the bistro and bar or grab a cookie and a cup of coffee,” Young said. “We have afternoon delights every afternoon.” These delights come in the form of on-brand pineapple shortbread cookies and some coffee placed out for everyone to enjoy. The hotel is part of the Staypineapple brand, part of Pineapple Hospitality Company. “Staypineapple, as a brand, we focus on doing hospitality differently,” King said. “We are a unique hotel experience. We are based out of Bellevue. So our owner and CEO, Michelle Barnet, it was her passion to create a unique experience for our guests. So in 2010, she built the Maxwell Hotel.” One of the focal points for the hotel is arts in the neighborhood. To that end, king said the hotel likes to make connections with McCaw Hall, the ballet, and all the theaters that sit nearby. “Queen Anne is a very artful community so if you look around the hotel we are very loud in our design,” King said. “We like to enjoy the space that we’re in and be creative and fun.” The hotel is decorated in vibrant colors and furniture designed to be interesting focal points. Ultimately, though, King said the idea is for people to

call the Maxwell Hotel a good neighbor. “We want to be the neighborhood place that you come to,” she said. “When your wifi is not working in your house, you are more than welcome to come join us in our lobby. We have a lot of space here.” Young added to that sentiment by saying that people don’t need an invitation to get involved with what the hotel has to offer. “Just come in the door,“ she said. “It’s how you’ll get involved. Our staff will greet you. We will be sure to provide an extraordinary experience whether it’s just coming in for a cup of coffee or you are staying the night, or you are hosting your wedding here. Whatever it is, as soon as you walk in those doors, we’ll make sure you’re involved with the experiences here.” The hotel offers meeting spaces as well — an 80-person ballroom and a 12-person boardroom. Both rooms have
whiteboards and screens built in for the use of guests, and those renting the space. AV equipment is also available to rent, but folks can bring their own at no additional cost. Interested parties can also make use of the kitchen’s catering services for onsite and offsite events, or rent out the Pineapple Bar and Bistro for a casual meeting space. “We really just want to be your goto neighbor for whatever you need,” King said. To make use of these services, contact Young at 425-9747173 or at byoung@staypineapple.com. Each room has a stuffed dog on the beds, the hotel’s mascot. “We have a mascot — Dash, the Pineapple Pup,” King said. “You can purchase a Dash and a portion of the proceeds go to help the Seattle Humane Society.” This service is part of the hotel’s dog-friendly policy. “We like to say that we are not just dog-friendly, but we
are dog-obsessed,” King said. “So we love people to come in with their dogs and just be another guest, like a four-legged guest.” The hotel also has an indoor pool, Young said. “You can’t do laps in it, but it is a great place to thaw and just warm up and soak for a little

bit and relax,” she said. Rooms can be reserved by going to maxwellseattle. reservation.com, by calling 206-286-0629 or by visiting the hotel at 300 Roy St, in Uptown. Maxwell hotel is part of the Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce.

My listing on Queen Anne just received 13 offers and it went waaaaaay over its list price. It’s not about underpricing, it’s simply the rule of economics: supply vs demand. NOW is the time!

Finding news ways to think outside the plastic box By Irene Panke Hopkins Course Correction
For twelve years, I have lived on a sailboat in Seattle. Living close to nature year-round as well as countless summers spent traveling the waters of the Pacific Northwest coast, has given me a deep appreciation of the earth and a desire to respect and protect the wildlife I encounter every day. Seals, herons, kingfishers, eagles, osprey, otters and sea lions are part of daily life on our boat. A couple of years ago, two Canadian Geese were waddling down the dock ahead of me. The female had a frayed, yellowed six-pack ring around her neck. Feathers bulging over and under the ring indicated that it was tightening, and I feared that it would strangle
her. She nervously nibbled at the bits sticking out, clearly bothered by this foreign object. I grabbed a piece of bread and a pair of scissors from my boat and, working with a neighbor, managed to corner and capture the goose before she escaped into the water. My neighbor held her, containing her flapping wings with his elbows as her feathers flew like confetti and her mate hysterically hissed and honked. I managed to snip the plastic noose from around her neck without harming her and she was free her to rejoin her frantic mate. Watching them from a distance as they swam off, I felt a mixture of relief for the goose and sorrow for other sea life in similar distress that I have seen in photographs. That was my moment. The experience that told me, “It’s time.” Time to start speaking up. Time to start acting. Time to stop buying six-pack anything if they are joined together by plastic rings. I vowed to work towards ridding my life of plastic. Hah! Easier said than done. Plastic is everywhere! Shelves upon shelves in the grocery stores are filled with plastic jugs, bottles, wrapping and endless products. What’s a goose-saving, earth-loving, plastic-loathing person to do? For starters, I stopped buying cans or bottles or anything
joined together by plastic rings or caps. It’s not enough just to cut those things up because plastic is getting into the ocean and while it may not strangle an animal, that same animal may unwittingly ingest it. Seattle photographer, Chris Jordan’s, photographs of albatrosses on the Midway Atoll, show dead chicks, their decayed, open bellies stuffed with bits of plastic they mistook for food in the ocean. In an article by Anna Turns in The Guardian (March 12, 2018), Jordan said, “This material lasts forever, yet we throw it away after a single use.” When I think about the big picture, I feel powerless and my efforts seem futile. As Jordan said in The Guardian article, “…it’s not as simple as inspiring individuals to make small changes. We have to acknowledge that individuals cannot make a difference. When 100 million people decide to do something differently, THAT is when real change happens.” Perhaps he is right. But does that mean we shouldn’t try? For the past two years I have made a concerted effort to find alternatives to plastic. Rather than focus on what we can’t do, let’s think about what we can do. We cannot stop plastic water bottles from being made. But we can stop buying them. We
cannot stop manufacturers from packaging things in plastic, but we can change what we buy, choosing products for their packaging. We can make a difference with our wallets, we can change our habits, we can set an example and make demands of local businesses to be more climate-friendly. We can educate ourselves read articles or books on the topic even if they make us uncomfortable. Especially if they make us uncomfortable. Here’s the thing. If this goes down the way it is surely headed, we will wake up one day engulfed in smoke as Australians did. We will choke on our own garbage. We will be forced to embrace the changes that, ironically, we must make in order to save our planet. Because we won’t have the convenience of a disposable economy any longer once the world is on fire and our resources are depleted. If you find some of this depressing, good. Because it is depressing. I’m not here to cheer you up. But I am here to offer suggestions and to ask you to join me in this fight to save our home, our planet. The geese, the albatrosses, the whales, the seals, the fish. Us. When traveling on a boat, a slight course correction can help you avoid disaster and get you safely to your desired destination. Not paying attention to your course can have devas-
tating results. Let’s correct our course, a little bit at a time. This week’s course correction: Here’s something that, hopefully, you are already doing. If not, it’s an easy way to start: Always bring reusable bags to the grocery store. Buy loose produce and collect it in net or cotton bags (readily available at PCC or online) skipping the provided plastic produce bags. Instead of that conveniently bagged lettuce we have grown to love (which studies have shown to contain fecal matter and evidence of poor sanitation by workers – if that doesn’t convince you I don’t know what will), buy a head of lettuce, wash it in your salad spinner and store it in the fridge. Do the same with loose veggies. When reaching for the products you normally buy, ask, “Is there an alternative in glass or paper or metal?” When you reach for your usual, think, “Is there another way?” I found after just a few weeks that I was able to break old habits and instill new ones. I think you will too. A heartfelt thank you to the Queen Anne & Magnolia News for supporting the idea for this column. Until next time. Irene Panke Hopkins is an essayist whose work has appeared in Real Simple Magazine, 48° North, and several anthologies.
Shedding light on the silent struggles that affect us all By Hailey Magee
This column was born of a desire to help folks feel less alone in their struggles with family, relationships, love and work. As a Life Coach, I have the privilege of hearing individuals’ deeply personal stories: their triumphs, their fears, their challenges and beyond. In the course of a single day, two or three of my clients may reveal that they’re facing a similar issue—and yet they feel terribly alone in their strife, as if they’re damaged or “broken.” When I reassure them that there’s nothing to be ashamed of—that their feelings, actions, and fears are a completely common, completely human response— the relief they feel is palpable. Incredible, how the simple words “You are not alone” provide such a powerful salve for isolation and anxiety.
I Thought It Was Just Me

our common challenges, and offer science-backed, research-supported steps forward. From puzzling patterns in romantic relationships to setting boundaries in the workplace and beyond, we’ll dive deep into the myriad challenges many of us face at home, at work and in love. As a Professional Certified Coach with a degree in Gender Studies and an overactive passion for psychology, I have always been driven by a desire to understand myself and others. The way I see it, selfunderstanding liberates us. Knowing the “why” behind my own actions and feelings has helped me feel less isolated by wrapping explanations—explanations shared by thousands— around my pain, my fears, my desires, and my patterns. It’s given the story of my life a framework that I can understand, as well as the power to move forward with conscience, agency and hope. When I’m not writing for the Queen Anne and Magnolia News, I’m helping my coaching clients conquer the people-pleasing pattern, set empowered boundaries and master the art of speaking their truth. I work with folks who have a history of putting others’ needs before their own—people-pleasers, codependent folks, empaths, that sort of thing—and I’ve worked with over 100 clients across the United States, Canada, Yemen, Ireland, South Africa and more. If you want to learn more about me or my work, you can find me on Facebook and Instagram at @haileypaigemagee or visit my website, www.haileymagee. com. Do you feel like you’re the only one facing a particular challenge or struggle? Or perhaps you have a question you’d like to see answered in the column? Email me at hailey@haileymagee.com for the chance to have it included here.
Well, you’re not the only one—but it’s horrible to feel that way, isn’t it? This column exists to debunk the “I thought it was just me” myth, shed light on
Perplexed, perhaps you’ll see yourself reflected in these paragraphs. If you do, remember—it’s not just you!
Perhaps you can relate? For example, do you ever feel: - Like you’re the only one who feels deeply lonely, but simultaneously too anxious to go out and make friends? - Like you’re the only one who can’t say “no” and stand up for herself ?
Dear Hailey, Who are you and what are you doing here? Signed, A Perplexed Reader Dear Perplexed, Good question! Allow me to clear up the confusion and introduce myself. My name’s Hailey Magee. Hope for Those Affected by Alzheimer’s By Tami Sandygren
Life Enrichment Director, Aegis Living Queen Anne Galer
There are an estimated 5.8 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s, according to the Alzheimer’s Association, and about 108,000 people in Washington state living with this disease, per a recent study. While these numbers are high, making it likely that we all know someone who has been touched by this condition, there is still hope and ways for individuals facing a diagnosis and their families to find the support they need so they can keep living a full life. Queen Anne couple Craig and Shirley Purkey are an example of how one couple facing Alzheimer’s found ways to manage it, stay positive and live happy. Craig and Shirley Purkey’s relationship has been defined by their connection to the city of Seattle and their quest to make every day an adventure. They first met as neighbors in Queen Anne in 1968, before traveling to live in Europe for three years while Craig was working with a division of the United Nations. When the Purkeys returned to Seattle so Craig could work for the University of Washington, their passion for traveling and adventure didn’t stop. In their many years of marriage, they have taken four cruises together, returned to Europe – including Switzerland, where their “Swiss Miss” daughter Laura was born – traveled to California’s wine country and taken several trips to Maui. Together, they’ve raised two

children and are proud grandparents of four. It was in the midst of their travels in recent years that Craig received the difficult diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. This news was a devastating blow to the couple whose long relationship was shaped by travel, companionship and a close connection. The Purkeys persevered, pledging to keep living life to the fullest as they have always done. Following the diagnosis, Craig and Shirley became involved in multiple support groups, and Craig began taking art therapy classes. After having an in-home caregiver for a period of time, Craig took the next step and joined an Aegis Living community –
right in Queen Anne, where the couple first met decades ago. The transition for Craig has gone smoothly. The couple has found comfort in Aegis Living’s community focus and memory care expertise. Craig stays busy with life enrichment activities offered – from painting to fitness classes and outings to local restaurants and museums. The couple has already made connections with fellow residents and the staff that treat them like family. Today, Craig and Shirley are as happy and undaunted as ever. The couple recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary right here at Aegis Living Galer, recreating their original photo with Shirley donning the same dress she
wore at their wedding in 1969. Their secrets to a happy marriage? -Recognize its a “give and get” balancing act and individual needs change daily. One day your partner may need 60 percent and you only get 40 percent. The next day you, you may need 100 percent and your partner gets zero. -Be kind, respectful and forgiving of each other. -Praise each other for accomplishments. -Give lots of tight hugs.
-Laugh a lot. Laughter truly is the best medicine. Their story is a beacon of hope – a couple refusing to give up in the face of bad news, but instead finding the support, care and community needed so they could live out the rest of their adventures together.

Queen Anne Retirement Community celebrates the Golden Years Submitted by:
Queen Anne Retirement Community
Queen Anne Retirement Community recently threw a golden years party. The event was meant to rekindle fond memories of the Golden Years. They piped in 50’s and 60’s music throughout the community. The staff dressed up in poodle skirts, rolled up jeans and leather jackets — very authentic! They decorated with pink Cadillac
cutouts, and ice cream sundae table toppers along with lots of balloons, creating a festive atmosphere. They served sliders, tater tots and root beer floats, while we also had a penny candy bar, filled with favorite old time candies for everyone to enjoy. They held a hula hoop contest, and also played ‘40s and ‘50s trivia, which the residents said they enjoyed. They invited the outside community as well and folks showed up in force. They had around 12 interested parties come in and tour the community.

Where does the universe end? When you look up at the night sky, it can feel like the universe is a big blanket of stars above you. But unlike a blanket, the universe doesn’t have corners and edges. Far beyond what humans can see, the universe keeps going. As far as humans know, it never stops. When I saw your question, I went straight to my friend Michael Allen to learn more. He is a Senior Instructor of Physics and Astronomy at Washington State University. The universe is bigger than the biggest thing you’ve ever seen. It’s bigger than the biggest thing this cat can imagine. It’s so big that even your question has more than one very big answer. Allen explained that you can think of the universe kind of like a rubber band. If you look at a rubber band’s flat surface, you can see it has no beginning and no end. It keeps going around and around in a loop. Dr. Universe, a grey cat with a lab coat, looking through binocularsImagine you drew dots on that rubber band. If you pull on the rubber band, what happens? The rubber band stretches, and the dots move further apart. The universe is like that. The distance between all its galaxies, planets, and stars is stretching all the time, like dots on a rubber band. It never ends, but it’s also constantly expanding.
Scientists don’t think there is a true edge of the universe. But there’s an end to what humans can see of the universe. This is called the edge of the observable universe. It’s the farthest we can see, based on how we get information from light. Everything you see depends on light bouncing off objects. Light reflects off the things around you and your eye absorbs it. When you look at your hand, you see your hand in that exact moment. But when you look at a star, you’re actually seeing that star in the past. That’s because the
light has to travel a very long time to reach your eyes. The farther away the star, the longer it takes. It takes light from the nearest star, the Sun, eight minutes to get to our eyes. Light from the next nearest star, Proxima Centauri, takes about four years to get to us! Light moves very fast — about 186,000 miles per second — but the universe is very big. So the farthest edge of the observable universe is the oldest light we can see: about 13.8 billion years in the past. But that edge is just what we can see from Earth. But
that’s just what we can see from Earth. Earth isn’t the center of the universe. It’s just one location. The edge of the observable universe depends on where you are. If we were somewhere else in the universe, we would have a different view. No matter where you are, you can think of yourself as a time traveler of sorts. When you gaze up at the stars, you’re looking up at the past. Sincerely, Dr. Universe

The Animal People: Film Screening + Q&A By Anna Power
QA&Mag News contributor
SIFF Cinema Uptown’s screening of “The Animal People “will be held Thursday, Feb. 27th at 6-9 p.m. “The Animal People tells the story of a protest campaign that brought an international corporation to the brink of collapse, resulting in one of the most extensive FBI investigations in U.S. history, and the indictment of six young American activists for terrorism,” according to the website at www.eventbrite.com/e/the-animalpeople-screening-qa-tickets-90096389727. The movie cast activists from the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC) 7—an animal rights campaign to stop Huntingdon Life Sciences due to their cruel animal testing. Featured in the film is Darius Fullmer, one of the SHAC 7 who is now an attorney for Sea Shepard Conservation Society, an international non-profit marine wildlife conservation organization. “The police set up this free speech zone, which makes you wonder then, ‘What’s everything outside of the free speech zone?’” Fullmer said. Due to corporate institutions of power, the United States Congress re-wrote laws prior to prosecuting these activists around free speech,
which were later used against Occupy Wall Street at Black Lives Matter, according to the event page at https://www.siff.net/year-roundcinema/the-animal-people-film-screeningqanda. “Any threat to cause a loss of profit to a corporation is now considered an act of terrorism,” attorney, author, and specialist on this topic, Heidi Boghosian said. Following the film, cast members Jake Conroy and Josh Harper will answer questions from the audience. Tickets are $12 and all proceeds go to Northwest Animal Rights Network (NARN) and Project Fang. NARN is a nonprofit working to raise awareness to end animal exploitation, according to their website at https://narn.org/about/. Project Fang is a prisoner support organization for earth and animal liberation prisoners, according to their website, at https://nycabc. wordpress.com/fang/. Event organizer Kimberly Sandie from Seattle Vegan Life felt the film got lost and is excited for more people to see it now. “It’s amazing the grassroots support it is getting around the world at independent showings like ours,” Sandie said, “NARN and I are so grateful for SIFF Supports program.”

Author Richard Heller comes to Queen Anne Book Company By Anna Power
QA&Mag News contributor
Author Richard Heller gathered the Seattle community together at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at Queen Anne Book Company. About 10 attendees gathered in the quaint children’s section of the bookstore. Many were friends and greeted Heller as they sat down. “A town is not a community without a heartfelt bookstore,” Heller remarked of Queen Anne Book Company in his opening speech. Heller is a poet and thirdgeneration Rodin student of sculpture. “What draws me most to this event is its multi-genre-regarding the art, the cello, and the poetry, and looking at how these different forms of art can overlap to experience them all in one night,” event coordinator Melanie Venhaus said. The evening opened with Elliot Pearl-Sacks playing the cello. Heller closed his eyes while he let the cello’s melody encompass him. The audience watched eyes open with contemplative smiles on their faces. Heller grew up in California and left school in the second grade due to an abusive teacher. He learned to read in Griffith Park by practicing Shakespearean lines with actors and began writing poetry of his own. Heller recalled his first experience with Native American tribes, which has inspired his
art and connection to animals and nature. “When I was a young kid, my playmate happened to be part of a tribal family and they made me 'little brother,'” Heller said, “They did some sort of ritual that I really didn't appreciate at the time, other than they felt like family to me and I felt warmth and love when I didn’t have any.” Heller referred to the book as his attempt to share his own perspective and to encourage others to do the same to complete the circle. “Lakota Sioux believe we all sit in a circle. Where we sit in a circle gives us our unique perspective, and I need to know your perspective as well as you need to know mine,” Heller said. The first chapter, ‘Witness,’ is our awareness taking in the world from birth that we carry on throughout our lives. The second chapter, ‘Speak,’ is how we communicate and engage with others. “'The Other World’ is chapter three. That's animals-- how we engage with animals. I've had unique experiences with animals for sure for 40 years,” Heller said. Heller worked with children with autism and horses. One of the children, Cindy, would go to the corral at night and sleep with a horse named Shadow. “Cindy would lie down with Shadow and they would just sleep. In the morning, the Shadow would not leave until Cindy got up,” Heller said. This interaction is representative of a strong theme of

interconnectedness in his book. “The fourth chapter is ‘Both Worlds’— the integration of the human with his natural world, which is part of his family,” Heller said. He brought the book to an end with the final chapter, consisting of two poems sandwiched between a short prose story. “The last chapter is ‘Whole,’” Heller said. “The hope is that by the time we gain a certain amount of these chapter skillsets that then we can contemplate that there is something above and beyond us—whether
it’s God or whatever you want to call it, that we are part of everything.” The audience listened intently. One woman and one man sitting in separate rows closed their eyes as they took in Heller’s words. Heller finished early and asked the audience if they wanted him read another story. They replied with an ecstatic, “Yes.” The audience mingled after the show, and there was a unified appreciation for having this space. “Holding events like this
brings people in to our store, but also brings them to meet each other, to be more cultured, to meet these authors and have these experiences that they wouldn't otherwise have,” Venhaus said. Venhaus said she is excited about a couple upcoming events as well. On March 10, poet M. Willet is releasing his new poetry collection, “The Elegy Beta.” On March 12, Rebecca West is talking about her book, “Happy Starts at Home,” which is about using home and décor to improve your mood.
Dynamic duo of Cavell and Moffitt fuel SPU Falcons Submitted by:
Seattle Pacific University
Harry Cavell and Divant'e Moffitt combined for 44 points Thursday, lifting 20th-ranked Seattle Pacific to its sixth
consecutive men's basketball win with an 88-67 victory over Simon Fraser in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup at West Gym. Cavell hit 9 of 13 attempts from the field and Moffitt shot

8 for 12. They joined Shaw Anderson as the team rebound leaders, each with six to spark a 34-30 edge on the boards. The Falcons (20-5) clinched the 26th 20-win season in the 76-year history of the program. They have accomplished that feat in consecutive seasons under fourth-year coach Grant Leep, whose team had a 22-7 record in 2019. SPU improved to 16-1 in league play, maintaining its five-game lead in the standings. The Falcons were victorious for the 20th time in the last 21 games, matching the 2002 SPU squad for the longest one-loss stretch in school history. Seattle Pacific has already secured the conference regularseason championship and the No. 1 seed for the GNAC Tournament that will be contested March 5-7 on Iron Coaching Court at Brougham Pavilion. Anderson finished with 12 points and was joined in double-digits for the Falcons by Braden Olsen with 11. Simon Fraser (14-12) dropped to 7-10 in GNAC
games, losing for the sixth time in the last eight outings. Othniel Spence poured in 24 points to pace the Clan, who also got 21 from Jasdeep Singh and 14 from Michael Provenzano. Ranked 15th nationally in team field goal percentage at exactly 50 percent entering the game, the Falcons nailed 55 percent of their shots (31 of 57), including 9-for-17 accuracy on 3-pointers. They limited Simon Fraser to 42 percent shooting from the floor (27 of 65) and 10 of 29 on treys. The decisive stretch was a 14-point run that the Falcons sandwiched around halftime. After tallying the final five points of the first half, they notched the opening nine of the second powered by five from Anderson. That produced a 44-29 advantage that proved to be insurmountable. Just twice did the Clan manage back-to-back baskets after intermission and they never drew closer than 13 points after the SPU spree. The lead increased to as many as 21 points halfway through the second period.
Neither team was particularly impressive early in the first half. SPU opened the game with a 3-pointer by Gabe Colosimo and the proceeded to miss its next five shots, committing three turnovers before making another basket. The Clan started 2-for-7 from the field and committed five turnovers during its opening 11 possessions. Both teams heated up a bit and Simon Fraser briefly inched out to a 16-14 lead on a trey by Spence with 11:36 showing on the clock. SPU netted the next five points, starting a 16-7 surge. When Moffitt finished a fastbreak layup with 3:45 left to play, the Falcons led 30-23. The Clan tallied six straight points to draw within one point. But SPU registered the final five points of the period, including a 3-pointer from the right corner by Anderson with 2.3 second left, to take a 35-29 halftime margin. For the game, SPU collected 13 points off 13 turnovers and Simon Fraser tallied just two points on seven miscues by the visitors.

AUCTION, from Page 1 reading it,” she said. She includes where the items can be picked up and any restrictions on them. People then bid in the Facebook comments of the item’s post until the auction time for each item runs out. “I’m doing it from my computer, from my phone,” Gallagher said. “I get Facebook notifications every five minutes. I have alarms going off every time an auction is going to end. It’s been pretty constant, and amazing.” When somebody wins an item they directly donate to an organization. Gallagher provides the following links for people to give to: - wildlifewarriors.org.au/ support/united-states - donate.zoo.org.au/donation - www.savethekoala.com/ adopt-a-koala - www.wires.org.au/ “When the final bid is done, I let them know that they’ve won,” she said. “They show me their donation receipt and then I hook them up with whoever donated the item to do the hand off.” Some of the items up for bid have been rally car racing, cooking classes, cases of wine, wine tasting parties, tickets to the Seattle Storm and jewelry, to name a few. Gallagher said she got involved after seeing some of her friends go through the pain of the fires. “I have a few Australian friends, and they were really hurting because of what was going on,” she said. “I felt a lot of desperation coming from a lot of their Facebook posts.” One such friend is a professional basketball player in Australia. “She was donating $50 for every three-pointer made during her game,” Gallagher said. “She even said it’s not just her three-pointers, or her team’s. It was anybody who made a three-pointer. So I thought that was a really cool way to get people involved in donating.” Then Gallagher had the idea for the auction, so she put the word out to see if she could make a difference. The first person to respond in a big way to the auction was the artist Henry. “He brought over 30 sets of signed books,” she said. “And people were donating $100, $200, for these signed books. I realized that this was really impactful, that people really wanted to donate to Australia, and be part of something that really felt like they were helping.” The auction has even been a way for Gallagher to get her kids involved in the effort. She said it is helping her instill good values about how to be good human beings, a invaluable aspect of parenting.

“They are helping me,” she said. “They’re like: ‘Hey an alarm’s going off. Mom’s got to close an auction,’ so it’s become fun and a little bit inclusive for them.” She said the process has been rather fun. The unintentional benefit of the auction — a natural consequence — Gallagher said, is that her family is discovering some really cool restaurants and attractions in and around Seattle. For instance, she didn’t know there was a kangaroo farm up in Arlington, until they they contacted her. “How did I not know there was a kangaroo farm and hour north of here?” she said. Most of all, “we’re discovering people’s really giving nature,” she said. “It has been heartwarming. Im on the verge of tears like half of my day right now.” Businesses that have donated include: - Chefshop: cooking classes - Henry (artist Ryan Henry Ward): signed copies of his books, clothing - Bar Cotto: dinners and pizza-making classes - Terra Plata: dinner for four - Vivid Root Rare succulents: 10 sets of four succulents - Queen Anne Chiropractic: Two massages - Seattle Storm: tickets and autograph passes
