Coronavirus cases spur county to action By Jessica Keller QA&Mag editor
With more cases of novel coronavirus being reported in King County, various government agencies are taking steps to prepare for cases and inform area residents about the COVID-19 virus strain.
Seattle Public Schools officials announced in a press release this week that the school district is providing families with weekly updates and share information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health. According to the press release, Seattle
Public Schools is actively communicating with the Public Health - Seattle and King County about COVID-19. “While the CDC advises that the risk is currently low, we are taking this health threat very seriously and contingency

Rather than attending regular services at Magnolia United Church of Christ, Feb. 23, parishioners and other volunteers demonstrated their commitment to the community and church at the second annual Community in Action Sunday. Reverend Marci Scott-Weis, senior pastor at MUCC, said the goal of the day is to be in the community, being of service to neighbors. To that end, 130 volunteers participated in five different service projects throughout the morning before returning to the church for hot soup and cocoa. Volunteers started the day with a blessing at the church before dividing into five teams, each assigned a different project. “It was such an amazing morning seeing folks from our congregation and from our community join together to help our neighbors,” ScottWeis said. “We had elderly folks and preschoolers working side by side on projects. We had strangers who came together for a common cause and became friends. It was fun, it was crazy busy, and it was church.” Scott-Weis said 50 volun-

Another 10 spruced up a tiny cabin at Interbay Village, and eight created comfort kits for the Ballard Food Bank. The remaining 25 volunteered at the Seattle Animal Shelter working on the outside dog area and indoor projects such as crafting toys for the dogs and other animals. At Thorndyke Park, Boy Scouts, baseball players, church and community members
stripped out invasive holly and replaced it with indigenous plants. The hard work forged a camaraderie and cooperative spirit between the volunteers, MUCC parishioner Melissa Ranken said. “It provided a great opportunity to get to know each other and make a noticeable difference in our community,” she said. Amy Kover, who also volunteered at Thorndyke Park, said the work reminded her how good it feels to get outside and be productive. “Even though we worked for two hours, I could barely
see my dent in the clean-up, but when I looked around at what our 45+ crew had accomplished, the whole park looked different,” Kover said. “It was a reminder for what numbers can accomplish.” Parishioner Sue Olsen said her group of 10 at Interbay Village was driven by the “importance of helping others.” After weeding the planter boxes in the community spaces, one person commented that they couldn’t wait to come back and fill the boxes with flowers. How are seashells formed?

Seashells come in an astounding variety. Some are curved and round, others long and tube-like. Some are smooth, others bumpy. Some are large, others small. Plus, they come in a rainbow of colors: red, green, brown, purple, pink, and more. All that variety comes from the same source: little animals called mollusks, with a mighty muscle called a mantle. I found out all about them from my friend Richelle Tanner, a scientist at Washington State University. She is very curious about the ocean and knows a lot about mollusks, a type of animal with a soft, moist body. There are many kinds of mollusks: both on land and in the sea, with and without shells. If you’ve ever seen a snail or a slug, you’ve met a mollusk in real life. Unlike humans, cats, and other animals with backbones, mollusks don’t have skeletons inside. Many move through life with just their soft bodies. But some grow shells for protection, as a kind of traveling armor. Dr. Universe, a grey cat with a lab coat, looking upThat’s where seashells come from, Tanner explained. “A seashell is a protective outer coating secreted by the animal’s mantle, which is one of their muscles,” she said. The mantle forms the soft outer wall of their body. The mollusk’s mantle builds the shell from the bottom up. It absorbs salt and chemicals from the water around it. When it has enough of the right ingredients, it uses them to form a hard substance called calcium carbonate. Strong, healthy seashells are made
mostly of calcium carbonate. (So are eggshells!) A mollusk produces calcium carbonate from its mantle, laying down layers of it over its lifetime. Together, those layers form the seashell. You can think of a seashell kind of like your own hair. Your hair grows and is part of you, but it isn’t alive on its own. A living mollusk produces a shell with its body, but the shell itself isn’t alive. When a mollusk dies, it leaves its shell behind. But even after the life of the mollusk inside has ended, its shell is important. Seashells provide shelter for fish and hermit crabs, nest material for birds, and even nutrients for other animals to build their own shells. You’re right to notice that seashells can come in many different colors. The way the shell forms helps explain where the

color comes from. “The material for the color comes from the mollusk’s environment — so it’s either taken out of the water or from what they eat,” Tanner said. For example, seashells from warm waters tend to be more colorful than those from cold areas. This might have to do with their diet. Warm Caribbean waters have more colorful foods than the cold ocean near Maine. We know seashells’ colors come from their environment. But scientists don’t know yet how the colors get spread around, creating brilliant patterns. If you keep asking questions and hunting for answers, maybe you could help figure this out. Sincerely, Dr. Universe

Savvy Senior: Beware of Potential 2020 Census Scams Dear Savvy Senior, Can you offer some tips to help seniors guard against census scams? With the 2020 census gearing up, I’ve read that there are a lot of potential scammers out there looking to take advantage of older people and I want to protect myself. - Cautious Judy Dear Judy,
Unfortunately, scams have become a persistent problem when the U.S. Census Bureau does its once-a-decade count of the U.S. population. Here’s what you can expect from the 2020 Census in the coming weeks, and how you can protect yourself from potential scams.
What to Expect
In mid-March, you and nearly every other U.S. household will receive an
invitation in the mail to respond to the 2020 Census. This year, you will have the option of completing the 2020 census questionnaire either online, by mail, or by phone. The invitation will include detailed instructions of what you need to do. If you don’t respond to this invitation letter, you will receive several follow-up postcard reminders from the Census Bureau by mail. If you still don’t respond by late April, a census worker will come to your door to collect your response in person. It only takes a few minutes to complete the census questionnaire. While census participation is very important and required by law, you also need to be vigilant of census-linked scams. This is especially important for seniors who tend to be prime targets. The Census Bureau warns against phishing email scams as well as con artist masquerading as census workers who will try to solicit your personal financial information. Here are some tips that can help you protect yourself.
Guard Your Information
Don’t give out your personal or financial information. The Census
Bureau or a legitimate census worker will never ask for your Social Security number, bank account number, credit card number, money or donations. And they will never contact you on behalf of a political party. If you’re asked for any of these, whether it be via phone, mail, email or in person, it’s a scam and should be reported to rumors@census. gov.
Avoid Online Scams
The Census Bureau will not send you an unsolicited email to request your participation in the 2020 Census. So, ignore any emails you get that may direct you to a census website that looks real but is fake – and may be infected with malware. Also, don’t reply to the email or open any attachment because they could contain viruses that could infect your computer. Forward the email or website address to the Census Bureau at rumors@census.gov. Then delete the message.
Be Safe at Home
If someone visits your home to collect a response for the 2020 Census, make sure you verify their identity. A legitimate census taker must present a field badge that includes a photograph of themselves, a Department of Commerce watermark and an expiration date. Census workers will also be carry-
ing a Census Bureau laptop or cellphone, as well as a bag with a Census Bureau logo. Also, remember that a census worker will only ask you the questions that appear on the questionnaire – your name, gender, age, race, ethnicity, phone number, type of residence and number of people living with you. They will not ask for sensitive personal information, such as your Social Security or credit card number. If you have questions about their identity, you can call 800-923-8282 to speak with a local Census Bureau representative. If it is determined that the visitor who came to your door does not work for the Census Bureau, contact your local police department. For more information on the 2020 Census, visit 2020census.gov.
Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.
Cannabis & the Creative Experience How cannabis influences art and perception Your Neighborly Cannabis Shop® BEEN GETTING YOUR

DISCOVER THE BENEFITS OF CBD WITH THC Ask our friendly medically certified budtenders all your cannabis questions 10 AM to 10 PM Daily (206) 420-2180 ponderseattle.com 2413 E Union St. Central District Seattle This product has intoxicating effects and may be habit forming. Marijuana can impair concentration, coordination, and judgment. Do not operate a vehicle or machinery under the influence of this drug. Cannabis and art go hand in hand. The extensive history of some of the world’s most renowned artists, musicians, and entertainers frequently using cannabis may not be a coincidence. The artistic and cultural explosions that trademark the 20th century drew attention to the creative enhancement of cannabis and other drugs. Until very recently, the unique association between cannabis use and artistic creativity remained largely mysterious. Researchers have since explored the scientific connection between the use of cannabis on the frontal cortex, and how this enhances, or sometimes disrupts, creative output and potential. There are several aspects of cannabis that may help with the creation and consumption of art. First is the notorious ability for cannabis to relax the mind and calm the nerves. For many artists, the ability to calm anxiety is conducive to artistic success; symptoms of anxiety can dramatically inhibit the ability to create good art and achieve a state of flow. Relaxing the body and mind, and becoming more in touch with the subconscious facilitates artistic expression and creative freedom. Research on the effects of cannabis on the human brain indicates a stimulative effect on the frontal cortex, the part of the brain that deals with cognition and creativity. By consuming the right dose of THC, the artist can stimulate the parts of the brain that produce innovation and abstract thought. So, what is it about cannabis that stimulates creativity? THC, the primary psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, influences cognition and
neurological function by modulating cannabinoid receptors. THC is a molecule that fits endogenous THC receptors, much like a key fits a lock. These receptors exist throughout the body, including in the cerebral cortex, which affects thinking and perceptual awareness, and in the amygdala, which affects emotions. The emotive influence of cannabis is important because it can help artists and their observers pull from a broader array of emotional and perceptual experiences when either creating or viewing art. The psychoactive properties of cannabis can sometimes enhance creativity alone, particularly with high doses that may embody a psychedelic experience in which sight and sound are not only enhanced, but slightly altered. Visual artists, in particular, may find patterns, textures, and colors emboldened, which can spark inspiration in multiple ways. Higher doses of THC can also affect depthperception, lending to influences in both the creation and consumption of visual art. Although cannabis is a relatively safe drug, consuming quantities this high can also cause anxiety and paranoia, so it is not advised to over-consume cannabis. In fact, the very stimulation that can enhance creativity on cannabis can also do the inverse; it can suppress creativity by overwhelming the mind and distracting creative thought. Similarly, overconsuming THC before observing art can cloud perspective by oversaturating perceptual stimulation. A 2014 study published in Psychopharmacology analyzed a phenomenon known as “divergent thinking” between people under the influence of cannabis
versus those not. Divergent thinking is a process we all do every day, it allows us to generate creative ideas by exploring different avenues of thought in a spontaneous, freeflowing, and non-linear manner. The study measured results to a series of examinations that measured fluency, described as the number of responses provided, flexibility, described as the variation in answers, as well as originality and elaboration. The results showed that people under the influence of small doses of THC (5.5 milligrams, specifically) scored consistently higher in all four categories than those who weren’t high (the control group). Meanwhile, participants who were given a higher dose of 22 milligrams scored dramatically lower in every category. This research suggests that low doses of cannabis are beneficial to the creative process, while higher doses are detrimental. While it remains virtually impossible to measure creativity objectively, the subjective human experience and minor scientific research indicate a correlation between cannabis use and creativity. The physiological mechanisms by which cannabis affects creativity, via stimulation of the prefrontal cortex and by encouraging blood flow to the cerebral cortex, is increasingly researched. The extensive association between cannabis use with creativity and the creation of art is hard to determine. Are creative people simply more likely to smoke pot, or does the pot lend to heightened creativity? - Cody Funderburk

An extraordinary stage By Mary Lou Sanelli Falling Awake
I’m sitting down today to write about Elliott Bay Book Company. That is to say, what recently happened to me there. I’ve written about many things since except this one thing that has been consuming my thoughts. Now, not only has Elliott Bay Book Company been serving readers in our city for nearly 50 years, it has a long history of hosting authors. And I firmly believe that the opportunity to share our work with the public in such an iconic setting as the Elliott Bay reading room, well, it doesn’t really matter who the audience is, authors are given an extraordinary stage that has an almost magical effect on the listening process. This alone commands our respect, and most people seem to understand that. But not everyone. Books bring us together in unexpected ways. When I gave my first reading at Elliott Bay, I watched two of my friends sit down next to each other and begin a courtship. Tender things can happen at a reading. Tough things can happen, too. At my latest Elliott Bay reading, one of the toughest things possible for an author did happen. I’ve resisted writing about it because it feels too small a concern when you
consider all that is happening in the world. Still, it keeps haunting me. Sigh. So I will tell my story simply. With brief sentences. The not-so-supportive man who came to my reading shall remain anonymous. He stood up to declare that he didn’t like my book at all. I took a deep breath that caused my smile to disappear. I felt that everything good I had said left the room. There was a silence that went on for too long. It wasn’t a good silence. I noticed the dust balls on the floor underneath the first row of chairs. I thought, I know this man. A few years back the same man came to my reading at Town Hall Seattle. His verbal criticism of my work that evening startled me in a way I hadn’t known before at a Q & A. I felt a jolt in my veins. It was the clearest act of sabotage that I had experienced at reading. I tried not to wear a look of humiliation that can take over an author’s face if she is not prepared for a comment that is meant to take her down a notch. I remember seeing this look on a famous author’s face back when Elliott Bay was still in Pioneer Square, like she wanted to say, “what is wrong with you?” I wanted to say, “what is wrong with you?” There was a woman sitting in the second row (and I’m just going to detour here to share the coincidental fact that she is faithful reader of this paper). She turned around and told the man to sit down. Her words — then why are you here? — reverberated inside the underground room,
drowning out the man’s voice entirely. Her will was stronger than his. What everyone, but everyone, knew was that. I wanted to hop down from the stage and hug her. We notice things, writers do. I noticed how the man seemed to be enjoying the attention. After he sat back down, I was relieved to feel my face relax. I wanted to say, I don’t really care one way or another what you think of me or my work, as long as I stay true to myself. People show themselves at a Q & A in different ways. They sometimes get confused because they don’t know how to phrase their question, or they forget to ask one. They tell a story, talk about themselves. There is an open space. They ache to fill it. An author can feel either connected to or used by certain audience members. It’s all a part of the business of bookselling. I have always equated a reading with giving the best I have to give and receiving the best consideration in return. I still assume my audience does too. I still want that feeling for myself. I work as a speaker. There will be many more audiences. But I will always remember my latest reading at Elliott Bay Book Company as the one where I quickly realized there is no way to plan for some occurrences. There is only a way to do, and make the best of it. No matter how taken aback I was in the moment, I never once lost faith in the rest of the audience. Or in the literary tradition I was proud to be part of. Or in myself. This has been behind me since October. Now it’s something I’ve seen my way through again. Long overdue.
Development pressure and historic preservation By Michael Herschensohn Columnist
Our neighborhood is under pressure as it copes with population growth, increased land values and apparent up zoning. Historic preservation has suddenly become a front-page topic, for it presents obstacles that may slow or even deter developers as they rush to cash in on the building boom. Projects such as the one at 2220 Queen Anne Ave. N. provide good examples of what we can and cannot do with Seattle’s existing historic preservation tools. The property is the site of a single family American Foursquare home built in 1905. It has been adapted to commercial use for some time and is now a restaurant. The developers are proposing a 45-unit six story apartment building on the lot. It is located within the
boundaries of the Upper Queen Anne Urban Village. Indeed, it is on the northern fringe of the village which terminates at McGraw Street. A cursory look at the house shows a building in disrepair covered with asbestos siding whose original design and use is still readable. Across the street from the building, the west side of the block is totally commercial. All the houses that were once there are gone. The east side of the street where the subject building sits is a mix of historic commercial buildings that blends to a row of houses starting just north of what used to be Reed-Wright’s offices (they are still upstairs) and which is the oldest building (1901) on that side of the street. The former homes were long ago converted to commercial purposes. Their historic integrity has been jeop DEVELOPMENT, Page 12

DEVELOPMENT, from Page 11 ardized by additions and the loss of their original fenestration although the occasional historic window survives. If someone had been prescient in 1975 when the city’s landmark ordinance was new and designating a building easier than today, they might have succeeded in protecting this house. At the time though, so many buildings on Queen Anne Avenue dated from the first decade of the 20th century and so many of them looked the same that it seems unlikely that the Landmarks Preservation Board would have found this building exceptional and
VIRUS, from Page 1 planning is underway at the district office,” according to the press release issued last week. According to the release, school nurses and staff are monitoring schools for students with symptoms. Officials are asking families to help keep students healthy and safe by reminding young people to wash their hands frequently and thoroughly, and cover their mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Officials also ask that, as with the regular flu, parents should keep their children home from school if they have a fever. City officials are also asking residents to be diligent and prepared, following the confirmation by public health authorities of new cases of coronavirus. “Although there are no confirmed cases in the City of Seattle, we have been preparing as a city since January,” Mayor Jenny A. Durkin stated in a press release issued Saturday. “We remain in regular, close contact with the Washington State Department of Health, Public Health - Seattle & King County, the King County executive, the governor’s office and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Our public health officials at the state, local and national levels are working together to keep the public safe and informed.
worth designation. I haven’t done the research, but I doubt that this house was associated with any important event in the city’s history. Even today, American Foursquare houses are found all over Seattle and, in my opinion, this building simply doesn’t meet landmark criteria. Obviously, it is old and suggests the historic flavor of the neighborhood, but it is not a landmark. If we had a historic district on Queen Anne (a problematic idea in itself ), this house would be considered ‘contributing’ to the historic quality of the district, but not defining it. It has been suggested that developers be required to move historic buildings if they want to build anew on a site. A big problem lies in defining what’s historic. If we
had such a law, we’d probably have to choose a date, call any building constructed prior to the date historic and movable. The feasibility of moving a building, not to speak of finding a lot for it, is probably a greater burden than defining what’s old. Even if we had a site for it, just think how prohibitive it would be to take down the trolley wires in front of 2220 Queen Anne to make room for a move. Eventually moving old houses to new sites may be required no matter what the cost. If it happens, it won’t be because of some intrinsic historic interest. It will be because global warming will place such a high value on existing structures and the energy already spent in their construction that governments
will require saving them. Historic preservation planners, no matter how worried about global warming, will probably oppose such a solution. That’s because we tend to place an extremely high value on protecting historic buildings in situ. I think the planners then will simply have to yield to the compelling logic of saving the planet. I would. I strive to make good choices when it comes to preserving the historic fabric of Queen Anne. These days any refusal to cudgel city staff or elected officials who decide in favor of new development over historic preservation is seen as a sellout. As the house at 2220 Queen Anne Avenue shows, landmarking, historic district protection or more stringent
rules for obtaining demolition permits are not easy, necessarily good nor correct solutions. Old doesn’t necessarily mean historic; urban density instead of sprawl mitigates climate change; bicycles, walking and mass transit are far better choices than enabling continued dependence on single occupancy vehicles. There is no going back to the “golden age’”of trolley cars, single family houses on every block or a butcher shop on every corner. Preserving the historic fabric of our neighborhood will require hard battles and the wise investment of our time and energy. I’m ready; I hope you’ll join me.
Individuals, families and businesses should make plans and prepare. The No. 1 thing people can do now is to heed the public health advice to keep from getting sick, and stay home if you do get sick.” According to the press release, Durkin has convened her Emergency Executive Board and cabinet to address the issues related to the city’s preparations for COVID-19. To build on those efforts, the city is activating its emergency operating center to coordinate with city, local and state partners. According to a press release issued Monday, the city of Seattle activated its Joint Information Center to support operations related to the COVID-19 response, as well. Public information officers are available to answer media inquiries at (206) 233-5072. In a separate release, King County Executive Dow Constantine announced Saturday he activated the county Emergency Operations Center to coordinate the work of cities across the region. “The emergency operations center will provide regional coordination in support of county and local operations for King County residents,” Constantine said in the press release. The EOC will also work with the King County Public Health and Medical Area Command to coordinate efforts at all levels of county government, according to the press release. King County Metro
has also formed an incident management team to develop recommendations, strategies and protocols to sustain Metro operations in all contingencies, the press release said. In addition, King County’s Department of Community and Human Services and Public Health are working with the county’s Facilities Management Division “to explore options for people who are homeless who may need to rest and recover from any possible COVID-19 infections away from others in shelter locations,” according to the press release. According to the Public Health - Seattle and King County website, a team of CDC officials is working with the agency and the Washington State Department of Health, healthcare system partners and others as more cases of the virus are confirmed. According to the Public Health web page dedicated to the virus, www.kingcounty.gov/ covid, the public can help in a number of ways. According to the Public Health website people should not going to the emergency room unless necessary to allow health professionals to serve people with the most critical needs. People who have symptoms like cough, fever or respiratory problems should contact their regular doctor first. Other recommendations include: • Staying home when sick;
• Practicing good personal hygiene habits, including hand washing, coughing into tissue or elbow, and avoiding touching eyes, nose or mouth. * Staying informed, as new information is being released regularly. People should check and subscribe to Public Health’s website or its Public Health Insider blog. For more information on COVID-19, people can also visit the Public Health website’s Frequently Asked Questions page at https://www. kingcounty.gov/depts/health/ communicable-diseases/ disease-control/novel-corona-
virus/FAQ.aspx. All residents and those who work or travel through the city of Seattle can sign up for AlertSeattle, the city’s official emergency notification system. Through AlertSeattle, the city can send real-time and customized notifications via text, email, voice message and social media during emergencies to include significant public health updates. The Washington State Department of Health has also established a call center to address the public’s questions. People should dial (800)5250127 and press #.
CHURCH, from Page 1 Parishioner Diane Wheeler said the best part of the day was being part of a group made up of men, women, girls and boys of all ages and experience “who were willing to give up their morning for the common good of helping creatures great and small.” “I did this because much has been given to me, and I wanted to make a tangible difference
in my neighborhood,” she said. Scott-Weis said CIA is an important day for parishioners at MUCC because it gets them out of church and into the community. “Our community matters to us as a congregation, and being of service matters to us,” she said. “It’s a different way to do church and to be church in this world. Instead of being inside at church and worshiping, we are out in our community, helping in whatever ways we can. That matters to us. Our neighbors matter to us.” - Editor’s Note: Former editor Daniel Warn contributed to this story.
