Officials increasing efforts to address virus By Jessica Keller
QA&Mag News editor
Local and state officials are ramping up efforts to minimize the spread of COVID-19 cases, as well as support people affected by the illness. As of Saturday, 83 cases of COVID-19 have been reported to Public Health — Seattle
& King County, and as of Sunday, the number of deaths has increased to 17, according to the agency’s website. Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan has taken a number of steps to address the city’s response to the illness in the past week, including issuing a Proclamation of Civil Emergency March 3, which “grants her the ability to
exercise emergency authority to address any immediate dangers to the public as a result of COVID-19,” according to a press release. Her office also outlined a number of measures to reduce exposure of COVID-19, as well. “We know we need to take additional measures to bring
more of our unsheltered community inside,” Durkan said in a press release. “Our neighbors experiencing homelessness are at greater risk of exposure to COVID-19, and as a city, region and country we must act with urgency to address the ongoing impacts of this public

Phase 1 to improve village business district on schedule

More work is being done on phase 1 of the Reimagine Magnolia Village beautification project, as workers dug holes last week that will soon hold 10 poles from which flowering pots will hang. They are just one of the projects to be completed under the guidance of the Magnolia Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee, which is overseeing the effort to make Magnolia’s business core more attractive to visitors and benefit the small businesses in the village. “As you well know, small businesses are working hard every day to survive, and what we’re trying to do is make that easier,” Magnolia Beautification Committee Chairwoman Cheryl McQuiston said. The idea for the project began as a community discussion spearheaded by chamber members, business owners and community members who wanted to see the village core revitalized. McQuiston said people have talked about wanting to see the village improved for years, but the campaign really took shape with the creation of the beautification committee, which features 10 people with backgrounds complementary to spearheading the campaign, including two business owners, a retired architect and an arborist. The beautification project has been split into five phases, with the first targeting West McGraw Street, between 32nd and 33rd avenues west. Once complete, the area will feature sidewalk seating, um-

New cannabis dispensary, Local Amsterdam, opens in Interbay Owner Ryan Drost said business will cater to neighborhood residents By Jessica Keller
QA&Mag News editor
Tucked in a small storefront on 15th Avenue West, Local Amsterdam cannabis dispensary is slowly establishing itself in the busy neighborhood of Interbay. The business opened with little fanfare Feb. 15, although owner Ryan Drost said a bigger opening is planned once things are a little more settled. In a city that already has a surfeit of cannabis dispensaries, Drost said he is pleased with his location in Interbay. When he and his wife, who works in real estate, were toying with the idea of opening a second cannabis business, they thought it was an ideal location. “It seems like there’s a lot of future potential over here, and I thought it would be a pretty well-served area for a dispensary,” Drost said. He said he and his wife are taking a little different approach to their new dispensary, really focusing on what the residents of the neighborhood want, as opposed to offering a wide range of different products at one time. “We’re trying to make it more of a mom and pop operation,” he said. That includes tailoring the product sold to the customers’ wishes. Since opening, Drost said staff have been taking requests from people, asking them what they want to purchase at the dispensary. “We’ve already got a suggestion box going,” he said. Drost already has experience running a dispensary in Longview, Wash., which he
opened in 2014, when the market for legalized recreational marijuana facilities was taking off. Previously, Drost had been working in a finance department before launching out into the recreational marijuana industry after briefly toying with the idea of getting into medical marijuana. “I really wanted to try something entrepreneurial,” Drost said, adding he found the new emerging industry to be exciting. With his business in Longview a success, he and his wife agreed they wanted to open another store in Seattle. Already, Drost said he has noticed key differences between his two stores. “Edibles are a bigger market, we noticed up here,” he said, adding customers also appreciate the offerings of pre-rolled marijuana cigarettes at the dispensary. Aside from those differences, Drost said he has learned people expect dispensary staff to have specialized knowledge, beyond the general distinctions, between the product sold. He said customers now expect staff to be knowledgeable about not only what product are sold and their general effects, but they want to know the chemical compounds and ratios of the ingredients. “It keeps us on our toes,” Drost said. As opposed to his other store, there is a greater demand for edibles up here, as well as for CBD. Drost said customers who visit his store have requested product with high CBD percentage, indicating their interest in mari-

juana goes beyond recreation. “People are looking for the other benefits up here,” he said. One thing that Drost knows for certain is people have certain expectations about the product they receive. “People really want consistent, reliable products,” Drost said. “I think we’re trying to check all the boxes.” Local Amsterdam, 3200 15th Avenue West Unit B, is currently open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week, but Drost anticipates those hours will expand to 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. People can find more information about the dispensary at local-amster.com and its Google business page, as well. Customers who are 21 or older can also see the store’s menu at leafly.com or follow the busi-
ness on social media. Email localamster@gmail.com for more information. Drost said he also intends to
start accepting orders online, which people can then drop by and pick up.

What’s in your bag?
By Irene Panke Hopkins Course Correction
“
Garbage. All I’ve been thinking about all week is garbage,” said Andie MacDowell’s character in the opening of the 1989 film “Sex, Lies and Videotape.” She is explaining her latest obsession to her therapist. “I’ve gotten real concerned over what’s gonna happen with all the garbage. We’ve got too much of it. We have to run out of places to put this stuff eventually.” Well, 30 years later, that is exactly what has happened. Landfills are overflowing, and the oceans are plugged with five giant garbage patches. One, situated halfway between California and Hawaii, is twice the size of Texas and three times the size of France (Scott Snowden, “The Great Pacific Garbage Patch Will
Collect Data on Plastic Pollution,” Forbes, 2019). Sadly, we have been under the misconception that our diligent recycling efforts are helping. But we’ve been duped. Much of what we think we are recycling is actually being shipped overseas and picked through by meagerly paid workers for items that can be reused at a profit. What can’t be reprocessed, including items that are contaminated by food waste and non-recyclable parts and pieces, is thrown into landfills (Erin McCormick, “Where does your plastic go? Global investigation reveals America’s dirty Secret,” The Guardian, 2019). Some of the lighter plastics blow away and end up in waterways and the ocean. Sigh. Where does that leave us? Should we just give up? What is the point of our efforts if this is what happens? The good news is that over the years we have gotten in the habit of sorting our trash. We think before we discard, no longer tossing everything willy nilly into one trash bin as we did not so long ago. So that’s a really good start and something that should encourage us. Most of us are in the habit of keeping reusable shopping

Queen Anne Helpline rolls out two new programs By Queen Anne Helpline staff In the midst of Seattle’s ongoing housing crisis, we are frequently asked what people can do to help. Homelessness can be a seemingly overwhelming problem without an easy solution. Not everyone can make a large donation or attend big fundraising events, but many folks still feel like they want to contribute. In response, Queen Anne Helpline has come up with two new programs aimed at education and meeting the needs of prospective donors and clients. The first program we’re launching is our “House Parties for Homelessness” series of events, aiming to bring our community together and engage in a civic-minded good time. House parties encourage residents to invite friends and neighbors to bring small-scale contributions, such as items for our linen, hygiene, food or adult clothing banks, have dinner, desserts or drinks, and chat: What does the helpline
do? Where are Seattle and homelessness prevention service areas like ours in Queen Anne, South Lake Union and Magnolia in terms of need, and what’s currently being done to help? It’s a lighter touch than volunteering and easily accessible for anyone who would like to participate. We have a tool kit ready to go for those interested and are happy to provide planning assistance for your personalized party. The second program we’re introducing is our monthly Pillar Partners Program — an easy, donate-through-Paypal organizing effort to promote monthly donations in amounts that fit comfortably within the scope of Pillars’ personal budgets. These frequent, scaled donations hold up our organization and keep roofs over the heads of the clients we serve, promoting the idea that you don’t have to be a big spender to make a big impact. For more information, visit info@queenannehelpline.org, or call 206-282-1540, and we’ll be happy to guide you through either program.

Vice president arrives with federal health experts to ‘epicenter’ of U.S. coronavirus outbreak By Cameron Sheppard
WNPA News Service
On the day Washington state recorded its 11th death from the COVID-19 virus, Vice President Mike Pence arrived in Pierce County to meet with Gov. Jay Inslee and state health officials. After his Thursday, March 5, meeting with the governor and public health officials, Pence announced that Congress has approved $8.3 billion in funding to respond to and slow the spread of coronavirus nationwide. President Donald Trump is expected to sign the bill on Friday. Pence said the approved funding includes not only money for federal agencies, but also resources for state and local efforts to fight the outbreak. Pence said the bill will also provide research funding to develop therapeutic drugs for those infected as well as an eventual vaccine, which he estimated could take more than a year and a half before being tested and approved. Inslee said his discussion with the vice president included talks of increas-
VIRUS, from Page 1 health crisis. Working in partnership with public health officials and King County, we will continue to work with providers to help individuals currently in our shelters, as well as expand shelter locations and resources for our most vulnerable individuals.” According to a press release, Durkan’s plan includes increasing shelter capacity for Seattle’s vulnerable populations living in unsafe encampments, which are at elevated risks from public health concerns, including infectious diseases. All locations will receive ongoing services, staffing and support, according to the mayor’s office. The locations identified will add a capacity for up to 100 more individuals, according to the press release, and will take two to three weeks to make operational. The locations are: Lake Union Tiny House Village, which will expand the current tiny home village by up to 20 units. New Cherry Hill Church Tiny House Village, which will include 30 units. Former Evergreen Treatment Facility in the Bitter Lake neighborhood with capacity for up to 50 people. The city’s Department of Neighborhoods will engage the community to identify immediate neighborhood needs as the sites are opened, according to the press release. Similarly, King County
ing testing capacity, increasing hospital and clinic capacity as well as worker compensation for those who cannot work because of their infection. John Wiesman, secretary of Washington’s Department of Health, reported that, as of Thursday, there were 70 known cases of COVID-19 infections in Washington state, up from 39 known cases the day before. The bulk of the infections have been discovered in King and Snohomish counties, but Wiesman said there is now one confirmed case in Grant County. The Grant County Health District confirmed that a person in critical condition has tested positive for the virus. More have since been reported. According to reports from the Snohomish and King county health departments, the deaths occurred in people who were elderly or had underlying health conditions — a group Wiesman said is the most vulnerable population. Pence said the majority of people who have contracted the virus are recovering and doing well.
announced different locations in the county to serve as quarantine, isolation and/or recovery sites for people who are not able to use their homes for this purpose, according to the press release. The shelters are intended for the homeless, people traveling and those who cannot be at home. The sites, which are located in White Center, Kent, Interbay and North Seattle, will create capacity for approximately 213 individuals. On a smaller level, many public agencies and organizations are responding to the threat of COVID-19 cases by cancelling events throughout the county. In Queen Anne, the monthly meeting of the Queen Anne Community Council was cancelled last week, and the Uptown Alliance also postponed its meeting, which was slated for Tuesday.
Seattle Parks and Rec announces program cancellations
Seattle Parks and Recreation, at the recommendation of Public Health Seattle & King County, cancelled all of its Lifelong Recreation classes, trips and drop-in programs for seniors, beginning last week and continuing for at least two weeks. Seattle & King County suggests people older than 60 should stay home and avoid large groups of people. According to a press release, SPR will continue to consult with, and follow the guidance of, public health partners and will re-evaluate this program
Earlier this week, Wiesman briefed the Senate Ways and Means Committee regarding the outbreak in the state. Wiesman requested $100 million from the Legislature in order to respond to and slow down the spread of the outbreak. Facing end-of-session deadlines, the Legislature scrambled to unanimously approve $100 million from the state’s rainy day fund to address the outbreak. Rep. Larry Springer, D-Kirkland, whose district includes the Life Care Center nursing home in Kirkland — the site of a deadly outbreak that affected residents and staff members — said at the state level, all the Legislature can do is allocate resources for local and state agencies. Springer said he lives near Life Care Center in Kirkland and said the local response has been “as good as it could be.” Springer said about two dozen firefighters in his district are quarantined after responding to calls that put them in close proximity to patients infected with the virus. He said this will require additional funding and resources as

Seattle Public Library cancels March events
The Seattle Public Library’s Central Library and 26 neighborhood branch libraries continue to operate with standard hours. According to a press release, however, the library has canceled all programs and events, both private and public, for the month of March. The library has also canceled all bookmobile service in March. The library’s Books By Mail service will continue for the patrons who use it. All external meetings scheduled in library meeting rooms are also canceled. “We are committed to protecting the health of our patrons and staff, while still offering essential Library services, including our many
first responders and medical practitioners continue to put themselves on the frontlines of the outbreak. King County reported this week it intends to purchase a Econo Lodge motel in Kent to serve as a quarantine facility in preparation for a potential surge of infections. Wiesman said earlier this week that two mobile homes are being rented to be used as mobile quarantine spaces. As public anxiety grows around the state, residents who fear they are experiencing symptoms of the coronavirus have turned to Twitter to express their frustrations with the lack of available testing in the state. “Testing kits are limited still so health professionals have established a criteria themselves about who is eligible for testing,” Inslee said Thursday. Inslee said the priority for testing is for elderly people or those with underlying health conditions who are displaying symptoms. Wiesman said Thursday that the University of Washington School of

For more information on services, people should visit the library website at spl.org or by following the Library’s Twitter and Facebook accounts. According to the press release, library staff are following best sanitation practices and has added sanitation stations to locations and pulling toys and loose playthings from children’s areas. The Library’s many digital services continue to be available to patrons for free, including e-books and e-audiobooks, streaming TV, movie and music services, classes and digital subscriptions to newspapers and magazines. Due to the library’s elimination of daily overdue fines in January, 2020, patrons can keep materials a bit longer without worrying about fines, and can also renew materials for a third time, provided others are not waiting. In addition, the Friends of The Seattle Public Library has postponed its annual Huge Book Sale, originally planned for Friday through Sunday. The sale has been rescheduled to May 8 to May 10 in the Exhibition Hall at the Seattle Center. For more information, visit www.friendsofspl.org.

safety of students. The district is tracking staff and student attendance daily. The district has canceled all events, work shops, field trips that require a substitute teacher, however. Beginning Monday, SPS has cancelled all events that bring large groups of people together, however, including large school community events, school day assemblies, all student travel and activities outside of school hours, such as overnight field trips and competitions, according to the district website. Out-ofstate and international travel is canceled through the end of the school year. Child care and extendedday learning programs are still operating, but this could change if schools are closed or if custodial services are needed to disinfect multiple buildings. In addition, Seattle Public Schools is excusing all healthrelated absences.

What is a sink hole? What causes one?

Sinkholes can be scary to think about. They don’t happen too often, but when they do, they can take people by surprise. The solid ground disappears, and a hole suddenly appears. It might seem like sinkholes appear out of nowhere. But they actually need specific conditions to form. To have a sinkhole, you first must have a cave. “You can think of a sinkhole as the end of the life cycle of a cave,” Kurtis Wilkie explained. He teaches Geology at Washington State University. He is very interested in how Earth’s features form over long periods of time. A lot happens underground that we can’t see. Dirt and rock layers lie beneath our feet. Water flows around them, shifting and moving these layers. With the right type of rock, enough water, and a lot of time, a cave can form. Wilkie said caves often occur in rock called limestone. Limestone is made mostly of calcium carbonate (the same substance that makes up seashells!). Limestone isn’t a very strong type of rock. It’s full of tiny cracks. They’re hard to see, but big enough for water to run through. Lots of contact with water can make those gaps get bigger. Over time, the limestone dissolves and breaks apart. This process is called erosion. As the rock dissolves, empty space gets left behind. Eventually, that space gets bigger and bigger until a cave forms. This happens extremely slowly, much longer than any human’s lifetime. “We’re talking not just thousands of
years, maybe millions of years. It’s not as if you start the process now and then 10 years or 100 years from now you have a cave. It takes a very long time,” Wilkie said. Most caves remain caves. But if water continues to interact with limestone, it can keep slowly eroding. The cave’s roof can become too weak to hold the heavy ground above it. If the roof collapses, the ground above it falls through. That’s how a sinkhole happens, and part of the cave comes to an end. A sinkhole is the end of a cave’s life — but not every cave’s life. Most caves don’t ever collapse or turn into sinkholes. A sinkhole only happens if the cave’s roof becomes too thin and unsupported. Humans can cause sinkholes to happen more
than they would naturally by pumping water from underground, reducing support for the ground above. Sinkholes happen more in some places than others. You might hear about sinkholes in Florida, an area with lots of limestone. But here in Washington State, where I live, other types of rock abound. So sinkholes are very rare. The odds of the ground collapsing beneath you are very small. You’re much more likely to get to visit a cave someday. And if you do, you can look up at its walls and remember the forces that shaped it. All it takes is a special rock, a lot of water, and plenty of time. Sincerely, Dr. Universe
Your Pet's Broken Tooth A broken tooth is a source of pain and potentially bacterial infection. If you or your veterinarian identifies trauma to a tooth, it is important to address the issue before it becomes a bigger problem.

Simplistically, teeth are composed of an outer layer of enamel that is very hard and impervious to penetration by bacteria and other noxious substances. Underneath the enamel is dentin, a very porous layer with thousands of tiny tubules. This dentil is in direct communication with the pulp chamber that houses the nerves and blood supply of the tooth.
only the outer structures of the tooth are classified as uncomplicated. Uncomplicated fractures of otherwise healthy teeth are the easiest to remedy. Typically a dental sealant is placed over the exposed dentin
to create a shield to protect the tooth. This is appropriate There are essentially two treatment of minor chip types of crown fractures (broken fractures only, and assumes teeth) – those that are termed there is no evidence of disease “complicated” and those or infection all the way down that are “uncomplicated”. If to the tip of the tooth root. The the fracture enters the living decision to “seal” the tooth is portion of the tooth called the not necessarily always a blackpulp, then it is classified as a and-white decision depending complicated fracture. More on what lurks below the gum superficial fractures that involve line.
Complicated fractures are addressed by one of two approaches. The tooth can be extracted or can be salvaged with endodontic therapy (root canal therapy). A root canal treatment will essentially remove the contents of the pulp canal and replace them with inert substances – preserving the tooth but eliminating the pain associated with the fracture. Root canal therapy is typically reserved for the most “important” teeth in our veterinary patients like the largest chewing/ shearing teeth and the canine teeth. For those teeth that root canal therapy is not elected, extraction is the only appropriate option. Dogs and cats are not likely to be expressive when it comes to oral pain. They often do not exhibit any noticeable symptoms. They will not stop eating, which is what most people assume means they are comfortable. It is up to us to not allow them to suffer in silence.

Breaking the people-pleasing habit one day at a time
By Hailey Magee
I thought it was just me
Dear Hailey,
I’m in my mid-50s. My whole life, I’ve struggled to speak up on matters big and small. It’s very hard for me to say no when people ask me for help. At work, for example, I’m respected and well-paid in my company, but I often feel burnt out and exhausted from taking on too many tasks. With
family it’s much of the same: my adult daughter asks me to babysit her kids all the time, and while I love those kids more than anything, sometimes I need nights to myself to unwind and relax. This tendency comes up in my marriage, too. Even when expressing small preferences, like where to go out to dinner or what channel to watch on TV, I find it easier to let my husband make the final decision. I hate the thought of imposing my own preferences on him if there’s a chance he might not enjoy them. When I look around me at my friends, my colleagues, and even my daughters, they seem to have no trouble speaking up for themselves or saying what they want. I feel like I must be the only one who struggles this way. I’m trapped in an invisible cage of self-censorship and I don’t know how to get out.
CROSSWORD PUZZLE ANSWERS
How can I start speaking up for myself after 50 years of staying quiet? Signed, Vexed and Voiceless
Dear Vexed, As a recovering peoplepleaser, I can assure you: It’s not just you! As children, many recovering people-pleasers learned that we could gain love by subverting our own needs to prioritize others’. Especially if we had caregivers who were distant, neglectful or struggled with addiction or mental illness, we may have learned to make ourselves as small as possible. Our needs or feelings may have been met with neglect, anger, punishment or abuse, and as adults, we may equate speaking our truth with being punished or abandoned. As adults, we have the ability to identify and break this pattern. But it takes time and effort! I like to think of it as exercising a muscle. After years of putting others’ needs first, your truth-speaking muscle might be weak. By participating in daily “workouts,” you can build strength over time and master the art of speaking your truth. Vexed, here are a few ways you can strengthen your truthspeaking muscle on a daily basis: Name how you feel as you read these words How do you feel in this very moment? Tired? Excited? Anxious? Calm? If you’re a recovering people-pleaser, you might have a tendency to deny or ignore your feelings — especially feelings of sadness, anger, resentment or malaise. Simply giving yourself permission to acknowledge how you’re feeling is a critical step
toward acknowledging, and speaking, your truth.
When a loved one asks “How are you?” tell them the truth On any given day, we might hear the question “How are you?” 15 times. These are 15 small opportunities to practice authenticity. Give yourself permission to say “I’m a little sad today, but I’m hanging in there” or “I’m fantastic. Today’s been an inspiring day” or “I’m so stressed, I can’t even feel my face.” Whatever you’re feeling, give yourself permission to share it. It might not be appropriate to launch into a prolonged monologue about all that’s going wrong for you, but practice being forthright about your emotional state. Acknowledge your simple, physical desires Stretch when your body feels tense. Don a cozy sweater when it’s cold. Go to bed when you’re tired. Eat when you’re hungry. Think about it: How often do you ignore your body’s needs? As a recovering people-pleaser, you might have a tendency to deny yourself out of habit — but your body can be an incredible ally as you learn to identify and speak your truth. Practice getting in communication with your physical experience, and with time, even more complex desires will arise. Name one thing you really want Our desires are a critical part of who we are. They reflect our values and our identities. When we’re not in touch with our own desires, we’re susceptible to putting others’ needs before our own. If you’ve been out of touch with your own
“Our desires are a critical part of who we are. They reflect our values and our identities. When we’re not in touch with our own desires, we’re susceptible to putting others’ needs before our own.” desires for a long time, saying even one thing you want — something as life-altering as a new job or as contrived as a new blender — can be revolutionary. For now, give yourself permission not to worry about how you might get it. Just notice how it feels to really want this thing you want. This is just a simple list to get you started. With time, you will find that it becomes easier to speak your truth. Maybe today it’s acknowledging that you feel sad; maybe three months from now, it’ll be setting a boundary with your daughter around how often you babysit her kiddos. Remember: It’s a process that takes practice — and it is well worth it! Sending you strength on the journey ahead, Vexed. MAGNOLIA, from Page 1 goal in two and a half months of phase 1. It also received a $25,000 Neighborhood Matching Fund grant from the City of Seattle. McQuiston said phase 1 will be finished this spring, and Magnolia will celebrate its completion in conjunction with the Magnolia Farmers Market summer season launch Saturday, June 6. Meanwhile, aspects of phase 2 have already begun, including permit seeking and fundraising. The end product should include adding new benches, poles and flowering baskets, a porous pavement around existing trees and the planting of a new Magnolia tree, according to the 2019 Magnolia Beautification Committee newsletter. Phase 2 will include West McGraw, from 33rd through 34th avenues west. Phase 3 will focus on West McGraw from 34th through 35th avenues west, and phases 4 and 5 will target 32nd and 33rd avenues west from West Smith to West Lynn.
PANKE, from Page 5 bags in our cars. It’s commonplace to see people heading towards a store with an armful of reusable bags. Regardless of whether you are buying groceries, clothing or other household supplies, this is a practice that, if you haven’t already done so, makes all kinds of sense in terms of decreasing waste. Although Seattle banned plastic bags in 2012, I’ve noticed that some stores still offer them. Rather than accept one of those if I forget my bag, I’ll juggle the loose items to my car where my empty, forgotten bag is strumming its fingers waiting to be filled. At a certain point, I believe that we have to look at our consumption. How much of our purchasing is frivolous? What is the packaging like, and where will it end up? Do the things we buy have more than one use before ending up in our trash or recycle bins? For 20 years, my family of four spent summers sailing the Pacific Northwest coast. When we were in remote areas without garbage disposal, out of necessity, we learned to minimize our trash. We chose cans over plastic or glass because they could be rinsed, crushed and stored for later recycling. We flattened cardboard packaging and stowed it until we could recycle it. Unavoidable plastic was washed in seawater, cut
Each of the phases will include many of the same elements featured in the others, beautification committee member Ann Goos said. The goal is to update the entire area of Magnolia Village proper and ensure it is attractive, pedestrian safe, beautiful and welcoming to visitors and the neighborhood. Goos said the desired result is making Magnolia Village a real attraction for visitors, while benefiting the business owners. “We want more foot traffic,” Goos said. “We want people to linger.” McQuiston said the Reimagine Magnolia Campaign is happening at an ideal time. Already the community has a number of popular draws for tourists and residents, including Discovery Park, its farmers market and community pool. She said it also has an awardwinning library and growing public schools accommodating the neighborhood’s young families. “Magnolia is really for its renaissance because it has gone through a generation change,” McQuiston said. She said Magnolia Chamber
of Commerce members hope this campaign will spur other efforts in other areas of the community. To that end, large flower pots that had been situated in the village were donated to businesses in other sections of Magnolia as a goodwill effort and a commitment to create a welcoming business district, Goos said. The Magnolia chamber supports all various business districts and services in the greater Magnolia neighborhood, which includes the village proper as well businesses and services situated along Thorndyke, the Elliott Bay Marina, in and near Fishermen’s Terminal, Interbay, along the 15th Ave/Elliott Avenue West corridor, and Government Way. “The chamber is dedicated to working with the businesses and the community in all of Magnolia and stands ready to advance ongoing improvements to meet the chamber’s mission and serve our members,” Goos said in an email. up and put in the trash. Food waste was stored in a sealable container to avoid stinking up our boat. Paper toweling was used sparingly, opting instead for sponges or rags. None of this was to prove a point but rather to conserve space and keep our boat from feeling like a garbage barge. We found that we were able to go for a week or more without filling up even one trash bag! Of course, when we returned home, we were not quite as diligent, there being curb side trash disposal and recycling. But what if we adopted some of those ideas and formed new habits about trash disposal and recycling now that we know the truth? As I mentioned in my last column, thinking about our purchases is a start. Considering whether or not we need that particular item in that particular packaging would begin turning some of our consumption and accumulation habits around. 1. Instead of buying butter or margarine in a plastic tub, buy the sticks that come in a paper box. 2. Instead of plastic zip-lock bags, try waxed paper, brown paper sandwich bags. Stores are also selling waxed cotton food bags and bowl covers that work well. 3. Instead of hand soap in a plastic bottle, how about bar soap that comes wrapped in paper, placed in a little dish by the sink? 4. Instead of buying yogurt in plastic tubs, make your own. It’s easy and delicious! Below
is a recipe that I have used for years, avoiding hundreds of plastic containers. When boating, a slight course correction can make the difference between smooth sailing and ending up on the rocks. This week’s Course Correction: Home-made yogurt. You need one half gallon of milk (in a cardboard container, of course), one single serving of plain yogurt, and a thermometer that measures surface temperature or can be submerged in liquid (don’t use a meat thermometer). These are sold anywhere kitchen gadgets are sold including many supermarkets. Heat milk in a saucepan to 180 degrees, stirring occasionally. Cool to 110 degrees, keeping the yogurt on the counter. Stirring gently, spoon some of the cooled milk into the yogurt, so as not to shock the cultures. Add the yogurt to the milk, stirring gently. Cover the pan, wrap the whole thing in a towel and let it sit for about eight to 10 hours at room temperature. Line a colander with paper coffee filters and drain the whey until the yogurt is the consistency you like. Store in a glass container, saving half a cup for your next batch. Tip: I make mine before I hit the sack so that the yogurt does its thing overnight. Always use plain yogurt, not sweetened or flavored. Irene Panke Hopkins is a writer and essayist.

PENCE, from Page 6 Medicine now has the testing capacity for 750 to 1,000 people a day. State insurance commissioner Mike Kreidler announced Thursday that people tested for the COVID-19 virus will not have to pay insurance co-pays or deductibles on the tests, and said people who are uninsured will not have to pay
either. Inslee said that based on advice he has received from medical experts, the vast majority of people who contract the virus will only experience mild symptoms if none at all, but the concern is that individuals who are infected may unknowingly pass the virus to someone who is vulnerable. Inslee encouraged individuals to consider avoiding large gatherings of people and to not go to work if they are feeling sick.
