Caravan Crepes Food Truck was running a small but steady business around noon Friday at the corner of 34th and West McGraw Street in Magnolia with Corino Bonjrada busy turning out crepes for the people stopping by. Bonjrada and his wife Ana Sofia Ponce de Leon de Bonjrada, who also own Pink Salt and Mondello in Magnolia, have turned to their food truck to help offset any revenue lost by Gov. Jay Inslee’s order to restrict operations of restaurants and bars until at least March 31 due to the spread of COVID-19. While Pink Salt, Ana Sofia’s Peruvian restaurant, and Mondello, which is run by Corino’s sister, are serving meals for delivery and takeout, Caravan Crepes is picking up daytime business from pedestrians. “This is where the community is strong together,” Corino Bonjrada said. “Everybody wants to help and help us stay alive.” Ana Sofia said, like every other restaurant and small business included in the governor’s emergency proclamation, they have been trying

Their family has been trying to run all three restaurants with very limited staff, she said, and only started the food truck March 18 to try and boost revenue. “It’s been really, really tough,” Ana Sofia said. “But, you know, we’ve been keeping the faith, hoping it’s over sooner rather than later.” She said the community has been supportive, which is heartwarming. The next time you’re in the bathtub, turn a cup upside down on the water. Push down on it as hard as you can. See if you can get it to sink below the water. It’ll be difficult to do! The air inside the cup makes it lighter than the water. But what happens if you turn the cup on its side, allowing water to rush in? You’ll see it’s easier to push underwater. Those same basic forces make a submarine work. That’s what I learned from Ian Richardson, an engineer at Washington State University. He is very curious about how liquids and solids interact. He has even helped NASA work on a submarine to someday go to Titan, one of Saturn’s moons. Buoyancy describes an object’s ability to float. It’s key to making a submarine. “It’s pretty easy to get something to sink and easy to get something to float,” Richardson said. “To get something to stay in the middle of a liquid is very challenging.” Ships float because they’re full of air. Air is lighter than the water around them. But submarines dive and rise. They’re able to do this because they control their weight using a combination of water and air. Ballast tanks are the secret. These special containers sit inside the submarine and control its buoyancy. “These tanks either let water in or they blow water out with air, and that’s how they control their buoyancy. They dive or surface based on how much water is in their ballast system,” Richardson

said. When air enters, the submarine gets lighter and rises. But when the tanks fill with water, the submarine becomes heavier and sinks. There are other important parts of a submarine’s design. Special parts create oxygen for passengers to breathe. The inside temperature stays steady to protect sensitive technology inside. And they’re usually made of strong metal, like steel or titanium. Maybe someday you’ll help design these important features. Until then, you can make your own miniature submarine. All you need is an empty plastic bottle, four heavy coins, a flexible straw and tape. First, have a grown-up help you make holes in the bottle: three on its side, and one in its cap. Screw the cap on. These holes will allow water and air into your

submarine. Next, tape the coins next to the row of holes in the side. Two should go near the top of the bottle, and two near the bottom. They’ll make the submarine heavier, but keep it balanced. Now, take your flexible straw and put it in the hole on the bottle’s cap. Make sure the straw is pointed up, so it will stick out of the water. When you’re ready to test your submarine, set it in water. As water enters, you’ll see the submarine sink. But if you blow into the straw, air gets pushed inside. The submarine rises. Soon you’ll be ready to explore the far reaches of your bathtub.

As coronavirus surges, programs struggle to reach vulnerable seniors at home By Judith Graham
Kaiser Health Network
Close down group meals for seniors. Cancel social gatherings. The directive, from the Illinois Department on Aging, sent shock waves through senior service organizations late last week. Overnight, Area Agencies on Aging had to figure out how to help people in their homes instead of at sites where they mingle and get various types of assistance. This is the new reality as the COVID-19 virus barrels into communities across America. Older adults — the demographic group most at risk of dying if they become ill are being warned against going out and risking contagion. And programs that serve this population are struggling to ensure that seniors who live in the community, especially those who are sick and frail, aren’t neglected. This vulnerable population far outstrips a group that has received more attention: older adults in nursing homes. In the United States, only 1.4 million seniors reside in these institutions; by contrast, about 47 million older adults are aging in place. An additional 812,000 seniors make their homes at assisted living facilities. While some of these seniors are relatively healthy, a significant portion of them are not. Outside of nursing homes, 15 percent of America’s 65-andolder population (more than 7 million seniors) is frail, a condition that greatly reduces
their ability to cope with even minor medical setbacks. Sixty percent have at least two chronic conditions, such as heart disease, lung disease or diabetes, that raise the chance that the coronavirus could kill them. But the virus is far from the only threat older adults face. The specter of hunger and malnutrition looms, as sites serving group meals shut down and seniors are unable or afraid to go out and shop for groceries. An estimated 5.5 million older adults were considered “food insecure” — without consistent access to sufficient healthy food even before this crisis. As the health care system becomes preoccupied with the new coronavirus, nonurgent doctors’ visits are being canceled. Older adults who otherwise might have had chronic illness checkups may now deteriorate at home, unnoticed. If they don’t go out, their mobility could become compromised — a risk for decline. Furthermore, if older adults stop seeing people regularly, isolation and loneliness could set in, generating stress and undermining their ability to cope. And if paid companions and home health aides become ill, quarantined or unable to work because they need to care for children whose schools have closed, older adults could be left without needed care. Yet government agencies have not issued detailed guidance about how to protect these at-risk seniors amid the threat of the COVID-19 virus. “I’m very disappointed and surprised at the lack of focus
who are homebound with serious illnesses and disabilities — an extraordinarily vulnerable group. A major concern is what will happen to clients if home care workers become sick with the coronavirus, are quarantined or are unable to show up for work because they have to care for family members, said Dr. Linda DeCherrie, Mount Sinai at Home’s clinical director and a professor of geriatrics at Mount Sinai Health System. Setting difficult boundaries with our partners Dear Hailey, I think I need to have a difficult conversation with my partner. I’m really worried about it, and I don’t know where to begin. The backstory is this: My partner and I were in a long-distance relationship for two years. A month ago, he got a new job and moved here from Nashville so we could live in the same city. I love him dearly and, up until this point, we’ve had few disagreements. That all changed when my partner moved to Seattle. Ever since he arrived, I feel like I don’t have enough personal time. He expects to spend three or four nights per week together, and that’s too much for me. I have a bunch of friends, I play music, and I’m involved in my local church community. Right now, one or two nights per week together feels like my maximum. I feel really guilty about needing more

IMPACTS, from Page 1 laid off a little over 20 employees. He retained his managers and supervisors because he wanted to have his key people in place, he said. When he had his employees meeting last week breaking the news, Levy guaranteed his staff their jobs when business returns to normal. “I said, ‘When we reopen, I want every single one of you back,’ but I don’t know what to expect,” Levy said. Like many restaurants, 5 Spot is offering curbside take out. The restaurant is offering a limited menu of comfort foods for pick up from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Levy is also thinking about offering delivery, but he’s not certain if that is feasible.
Levy expects the closures to impact his bottom line greatly. He said, while he can cut back labor, other expenses are not going away, such as rent, property tax and utility costs. Plus, he doubts elderly people will want to leave their homes during this time, which he said is understandable, but that still removes a chunk of his clientele. “I’m hoping to get out of this without taking out any loans,” he said, adding he doesn’t know if he will make it. Levy said he thinks ordering the shutdowns were the right thing to do, however. “I am fully in agreement with Gov. Inslee’s decision to close all the restaurants,” he said. “I think it was a necessary and absolutely correct decision to make.” He thinks the ramifications will be great, however. Levy said, once this ends, he expects

nights would make you feel (such as balanced, grounded, perhaps more appreciative of your relationship overall). I would then invite your partner to share how he feels about the current system and how he might feel about an adjustment. Remember: There is no “right” amount of time to spend with a partner. There is no “average” or “ideal” number of weekly sleepovers. It depends entirely on your unique needs, and that’s the beautiful thing: You guys get to write the rules. The key word here is negotiation. It’s possible that one or two nights per week might not meet your partner’s needs in the relationship. If that’s the case, you will need to compromise to find a middle ground. If you’re unable to find a compromise that helps you both feel secure and balanced, you might need to consider the viability of this partnership long-term. Keep in mind that if
the total number of restaurants to be down 35 percent in Seattle, adding that the city had been “lethally overbuilding restaurants” in the last four to five years, and it is unsustainable. Landlords, he said, who have been raising rents by 8 to 10 percent yearly, will see vacancies in their buildings because they “absolutely are not going to get their $45 per square foot.” Levy said, even though the governor’s order was for restaurants to shut down for two weeks, he expects it will be longer, and the fallout for restaurants certainly will be. Levy said restaurants like his will need the support of the locals to help carry them through if they are to survive. “All small business owners are hoping that the community will support them as much as they are able,” he said.
without residential parking zone permits must still obey time limits. This suspension will initially last for two weeks. Booting and Towing: The city will limit towing to situations that create safety hazards, block access or create other major issues. The city will suspend booting of vehicles with unpaid parking tickets for the duration of the Seattle Municipal Court closure. Temporary restaurant loading zones: SDOT is installing temporary loading zones at restaurants. No payment is necessary for quick food pickups in the three-minute load zones. Information on changes to parking citations, fines and adjudication can be found on SDOT’s COVID-19 parking page.
your partner has only been here a month, he probably hasn’t had enough time to become entrenched in his community or form a network of friends. He’s still in a period of transition and might be relying on you for a sense of social connection as he gets established in town. You can have compassion for this while simultaneously reiterating your need for more time to yourself. I know that you’re afraid of hurting your partner, but remember — we set boundaries to preserve the health and integrity of our relationships. If we didn’t care, we wouldn’t do the difficult work of having difficult conversations. Consider this: How might having this difficult conversation actually improve your partnership long-term? Here are a few benefits I can imagine: It could pave the pathway for more authentic and honest conversations
down the road. It could open up space for your partner to express any lingering needs that he hasn’t felt comfortable enough to express. You might no longer carry the heavy burden of a hidden resentment toward your partner. You might troubleshoot this issue and develop problem-solving skills that will strengthen your relationship in the months and years to come. While this conversation might be difficult for you and your partner, it is a marked step toward greater authenticity, transparency, and honesty in your relationship. With care, Hailey P.S.: Do you feel like you’re the only one facing a particular challenge or struggle? Or perhaps you have a question you’d like to see answered in the column?
