Local food bank faces dilemma Organization in lower Queen Anne has both shortage and surplus of food items

Food banks organizers across the country have reported food shortages and fewer volunteers in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic in America, but the Queen Anne Food Bank at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish is facing different challenges. Food bank directors Stephen Kreins and Father Rich Luberti are serving more people seeking lunches every morning or picking up bags of food from the food bank Thursday afternoons. That is the only constant at the food bank, however. Everything else changes from day to day, from the number of volunteers to the amount of food available, Kreins said. Monday morning, Kreins was surprised to see two members of the Washington National Guard making up sandwiches to put in the graband-go lunch bags that would be picked up later in the morning. They were welcomed alongside the two other volunteers, although Kreins said

he didn’t know they would be there. “It’s kind of feast or famine with the volunteers,” Kreins said. “The food is the same way.” When Gov. Jay Inslee issued his proclamation limiting the restaurants and shops serving food to curb-side delivery and takeout in response to
the threat of COVID-19 cases overwhelming the city, the food bank found itself with a surplus of food donations, mostly produce or other products with a short shelf life, from restaurants that were closing for the duration or had extra food they did not need. This came in addition to the regular food shipments the
food bank already receives. “Two weeks ago, we were just overwhelmed,” he said. While the donations from restaurants are tapering off, Kreins said the food bank still has extra food it cannot use, usually produce or pre-made meals, so he has been loading QAFB, Page 8
State officials place new emphasis on remote learning By Jessica Keller
QA&Mag News editor
When Gov. Jay Inslee announced in March schools would close until the end of April, remote learning was only encouraged if school districts could guarantee equity of services for students. After Inslee announced in-school instruction would not resume for the remainder of the school year last week, online education is more of a certainty moving forward. Inslee and Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal are pushing for school districts and educators to find the best ways to teach students through distance and remote learning. That includes
districts determining which students do not have access to technology in their homes or online connectivity so they can begin overcoming those barriers. Inslee said remote learning will never replace in-person education, “but this unprecedented health emergency demands that we take this step, both for the sake of our children and for our community.” Inslee also said state officials are working with telecommunication companies to get as many students internet access as possible, as well as devices, so school districts can implement online education plans for students. Echoing Inslee’s statements, Reykdal said Washington residents need to make online connectivity for all families a pri-
ority. He said it is essential students get access to technology and internet connectivity because, while this pandemic may happen only once in 100 years, there will be future emergencies. “From the seeds of crisis come the strong, strong roots and blossom of innovation, and that’s the moment we find ourselves in today,” Reykdal said. He also did not guarantee school would start back up this fall. He said just one case of COVID-19 would lead to school closures and further disruption. “A rush back to school puts significant risk in learning continuity that, at this time, would not be better than the model that we are developing and advancing at a distance,” he said.

Viruses are strange things. They’re not alive like you or me. But they behave somewhat that way —spreading, growing, appearing in new forms. How can this be? There’s a lot scientists don’t know yet about the new coronavirus. But they do know a lot about how viruses work and make people sick. To learn more, I talked to Sylvia Omulo, a scientist specializing in infectious diseases at Washington State University. Your body is made of tiny building blocks called cells. Different cells do different types of work. They all follow instructions written in your body: your genes. Viruses also have genes, but they don’t have cells like you or me. Instead, they rely on other creatures’ cells to come “alive.” “A virus is a particle of genetic material that causes an infection by invading a cell,” Omulo explained. “It’s extremely small, smaller than a cell.” You can think of a virus particle like a letter with bad news, tucked inside an envelope. Layers of protein (the envelope) cover a bundle of genes (the letter), protecting it until it’s ready to be opened

and read. Virus particles spread through the air or on surfaces. They cause infections if they get inside someone’s body. The envelope opens if the virus enters a creature’s cell, called the “host.” The virus uses its genetic instructions to take over the cell. The virus disrupts the cell’s usual work, Omulo said, using its resources to make copies of itself. Those virus copies invade other cells, repeating the process. The host becomes sick as a result. Usually, the virus copies itself exactly. But because viruses have genes, they also

them sick. But remember: A virus isn’t alive on its own. It needs an opportunity to enter a cell. It’s your job to ruin that opportunity. When you wash your hands with soap, you rub off the virus’s “envelope.” The bad news can’t go anywhere. When you keep distance from others, you close your “mailbox.” Virus particles can’t enter your cells or anyone else’s. Without a host, a virus can’t do anything. That’s why it’s so important not to give the virus that chance. Stay safe, and stay curious, Dr. Universe

evolve over time. This means they’re changing, even as they’re making copies of themselves. That’s part of how new virus forms emerge. Viruses have been around for millions of years, much longer than humans. Some only affect plants or bacteria. Some affect only some animals. Other viruses spread from animals to humans. Omulo explained this is one way “new” viruses appear. A virus might affect humans, but not the animals carrying it. If it gets the opportunity to jump to humans, it can make

While there’s power in taking action to self-soothe, there is no magic pill to “solve” our many worries during this time. Uncomfortable emotions are a normal, natural and inevitable part of human life — all the more so during a global crisis. In her book “Stroke of Insight,” neuroscientist Jill Bolte-Taylor explains that the physiological lifespan of an emotion in the body and brain is 90 seconds. Emotions linger beyond 90 seconds when we stay stuck in mental loops such as “I shouldn’t be feeling this way,” or “This shouldn’t have happened.” Bolte-Taylor’s research makes a simple yet powerful point: The most expedient way to let go of unpleasant emotions is to feel them, physically and emotionally, and then let
them go — without fueling the fire with judgments or stories. Problem-solving tough emotions away may, counter intuitively, make them last much longer than intended. Relieve yourself of the impossible burden of trying to problem-solve your way into a pain-free existence. You don’t need to work harder. You don’t need to be “better.” Your only job is to feel the emotions as they rise, and release them as they go. You’ll need the following ingredients, available online or at certain grocery stores (I go to PCC). 4 Tbsp Coconut Oil 3 Tbsp Natural Baking Soda 3 Tbsp Bentonite Clay (I prefer white purely for aesthetics) 1 Tsp Xylitol 5-10 Drops Concentrated Trace Minerals (remineralizer) 20 – 30 drops Essential Oils (peppermint is nice) Water as needed Mix all ingredients with a non-metal spoon in a nonmetal bowl (bentonite clay is volcanic ash with an electric charge). I use five to six drops of the trace minerals because it’s too salty otherwise. And I go crazy with the peppermint — 25 drops or more! If your coconut oil is solid or difficult to mix, warm it up for a few minutes on the stove or in the sun. Store in a non-metal container (preferably glass). Dip your toothbrush in and brush normally. Safe for children and adults. Keeps for several months at room temperature. Credit to: The Crunchy Moose, thecrunchymoose. com/. When I first proposed the

QAFB, from Page 1 up the surplus and taking it to nearby public housing for distribution. At the same time, Kreins said the food bank has a shortage of food needed for its sack lunch program. “I had to reach out for help filling the lunch bags,” he said. Fortunately, community organizations, like the Boy Scouts, and area churches help out where they can. St. Anne’s, for example, agreed to provide sandwiches to the food bank on Mondays. The sandwiches are much appreciated because food bank volunteers have been distributing about 200 hundred lunches per day, which is up about 10 percent from about three weeks ago, Kreins said. The food bank used to serve soup and sandwiches but had to suspend the soup portion because of social distancing measures. Patrons now pick up the bagged lunches set out for them. The meals typically include a sandwich and three or four sides — usually trail mix, fruit cups, individual servings of yogurt and granola bars — plus water. Staff put out pastries, bread and fruit that people can take as they want. Kreins said before the
HOPKINS, from Page 4 idea for this climate-focused column, I never dreamed that, just three columns in, we would be dropped into the middle of the surreal scenario that we find ourselves in. “How do I write about the climate, when this is taking over our lives,” I wondered as it sank its teeth into our lives and our psyches. But then, the skies all over the world started clearing with fewer emissions resulting from stayat-home orders and industry stoppages. Anyone who has disputed the fact that climate
pandemic, sandwiches were frequently tuna or egg salad, but without cans of tuna or eggs being delivered from suppliers, the food bank had to improvise. “We’ve been buying a lot more cold cuts lately,” Luberti said. Food bank bags are also pre-packaged and set out for people to pick up at the back of the facility. They include produce, a couple of dairy and meat items, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta, sauce, grains and pastries or other desserts. If they are available, patrons can take bread and fresh fruit. As with the sack lunches, about three weeks ago, the number of people requesting food bank bags increased, Kreins said. Volunteers are now making about 80 to 100 bags of food weekly. That does not count the additional bags distributed to people who can’t leave their house because they are shut ins or recovering from COVID-19. “We’ve been getting quiet a few calls for that,” Kreins said, adding he now delivers bags of food to people on Wednesdays, leaving the parcels in front of a residence while somebody waits inside. Kreins said the people coming to get food and lunches are split between homeless people and residents who are out of work and just “can’t make it”
without the help. “And they know they can get a good meal here,” Kreins said. Even though the food bank has experienced a food surplus for one side of its operations and a shortage on the other, the food bank’s circumstances could change once again the longer the shutdowns last and if the economy gets worse. “I think what’s been keeping us OK is people bringing in food,” Kreins said. Right now, the food bank needs donations for its lunch program, including lunch meat, yogurt, fruit cups, granola bars and trail mix. Donations of socks are also always welcome. Kreins said would like to start handing out things like socks and hygiene supplies again soon. Monetary donations are also always welcome and needed. “We have to raise money to support this,” Kreins said, adding the food bank does not receive any monetary assistance except for what is raised or donated. Sack lunches are availablefrom 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, and the food bank is open from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays at the Queen Anne Food Bank at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, 232 Warren Ave. N., Seattle. change is caused by humans can no longer credibly do so. The coronavirus, with all it has taken from us, has given us an opportunity to wake up to what we must do. Let’s stay awake and demand that our leaders take heed. It’s going to take more than postings on FaceBook and talking in our small circles of like-minded friends. It’s going to take all of us embracing discomfort when talking to those who disagree or have blinders on. And accepting that, no matter how difficult, we have to adjust our habits and change our patterns. Hope you are hanging in there, staying healthy and focusing on the eventual light
at the end of this pandemic tunnel. We will beat this and come out on the other side, hopefully, intact. Maybe better than when we went into it. Course Correction for the week: Try making your own toothpaste. It can be a fun activity with kids, too, and a teaching opportunity for them about the climate. When we are free to go about our lives as we did before the pandemic, hopefully you will have established some new, climate-healing habits. Talk it up amongst your friends. Get comfortable with discomfort and pushback. Most of all be patient with yourself and your loved ones.
