By Laura Marie Rivera Contributing writer
The Traveling Goat is a neighborhood bar brought to life by Steve and Tina Nicoles. After many years in the hospitality industry and working for a large hotel chain, the husband-andwife team decided to branch out on their own. They had been dreaming of running their own restaurant for over a decade. Like so many people in the hospitality industry, the Nicoles had always dreamed of opening their own place. With all of the uncertainty of the pandemic and an eventual layoff, they decided it was finally the right time. Last week, Uptown officially welcomed The Traveling Goat to the neighborhood. Steve and Tina can be found cooking and mixing

Members of two clubs in Magnolia shared good will and banter this past week when Walt Zierman encountered Carleton Park Garden Club members. Zierman, a member of the Magnolia Rotary, was walking his dog when he saw the women straightening the median near Key Bank in the Village. Zierman joked that when they were done, they could head to his house and spruce up his property. They chatted for a while and Zierman finished walking his dog. Later in the afternoon, he ran into the ladies again when they had moved to the area by the baseball fields and the red sculptures. Zierman said he asked them if they were ready for some liniment ... or gin. One member told him that they needed that now more than ever. On his errands, Zierman picked up a bottle of gin and presented it to the garden club members on behalf of the Magnolia Rotary Club. Pictured are Kathy Carr, Walt Zierman, Gretchen Taylor and Jean Birkland. The Magnolia Rotary is looking for new members. It currently meets at 5 p.m. the first and third Thursdays of the month via Zoom. Go to http://magnoliarotary.org/ for more information about Magnolia Rotary.

TO YOUR HEALTH
Maintaining a healthy gut M
aintaining a healthy digestive system is important to overall vitality and wellbeing. Digestive imbalance presents in various ways. Examples of discomforts after eating include gas, bloating, acid reflux, mucus and congestion, constipation, loose stool, rashes, cloudy head, lethargy and irritability. The precise presentation pattern suggests the root of imbalance, thus intimating the remedy. In Ayurveda, the 5,000-year-old system of wellness in India, the solution is individual and nuanced, yet potent. It begins with an understanding of dosha. How doshas factor into gut health In order to comprehend dosha, it’s important to recognize that from an Ayurvedic perspective, all people and things are composed of five elements — space, air, fire, water and earth — in varying amounts. The three doshas — vata, pitta and kapha — are specific combinations of these elements. Vata dosha is comprised of air and space. Pitta dosha is made up of fire and water. Kapha dosha consists of earth and water. The relative predominance of each dosha in the digestive system influences appetite, digestion, absorption and elimination. When one dosha is in excess, corresponding digestive symptoms can
substantive, warm, moist, and subtly sweet foods, such as warm soups, broths, stews, oatmeal and kitcharis, all with warming spices. A hint of sea salt and a splash of sour also benefit. Maintaining a routine and cultivating serenity within a comfortably warm environment further calm vata symptoms.
Annie Lindberg The Point Acupuncture result. Digestive vata Vata is the lightest, coldest, driest, most mobile dosha. Excess vata in the gut results in a tendency toward gas, bloating with corresponding belly discomfort, constipation and a lightheaded feeling when hungry. To encourage digestive balance and minimize these symptoms, we can favor foods that soothe vata and minimize meals that negatively affect vata. Foods to reduce during gas and bloating are include snacks like crackers and popcorn, most beans, iced drinks, and excess raw food and ruffage. In order to actively soothe digestive vata, consider adding
Digestive pitta Pitta is the warmest and most intense dosha. When excess pitta predominates, we are prone to acid reflux, loose stool, sharp appetite and even rashes. We may also tend to feel irritable when missing a meal. Foods that should be reduced when pitta symptoms are present are hot, pungent, spicy, salty and sour. These include garlic, raw onions, chilis, jalapeños and vinegar. Processed foods, which are typically salt-laden, fried foods, most cooked oils, except ghee and coconut oil, and alcohol are also best avoided. So too are stimulants including caffeine and nicotine. Dietary alterations that pacify pitta and restore digestive ease include cool, astringent, bitter and subtly sweet foods such as a plethora of raw or lightly cooked veggies and fruits. Beans, cooling herbs and spices like cilantro, coriander, fennel and cardamom are also balancing. The raw green
ruffage that challenges the vata gut balances excess pitta. A cool environment and a focus on going with the flow soothe pitta symptoms too.
Digestive kapha Kapha is the heaviest dosha. When kapha dominates the digestive system, there is a tendency toward lethargy after meals, brain fog, decreased motivation and possible congestion and mucus. Earth and water mixed makes mud, and our bodies and minds indeed feel muddy and sticky with elevated kapha. Foods that amplify kapha include heavy, sweet, oily and cold foods such as ice creams, dense and sweet desserts, pastries, cheeses, fried foods and excess nuts. Modifying meals by adding light, warm, dry, stimulating, spicy foods mitigate kapha. When kapha predominates, a little caffeine can be helpful, which cannot be said for other doshic imbalances. Overeating exacerbates symptoms, whereas reducing meal quantity and frequency, allowing ample time for complete digestion, helps. Stimulating activities as well as moderate to vigorous exercise aid reduction of kapha symptoms as well. Many people suffer at times from digestive imbalances, expe-
riencing gas, bloating, acid reflux, mucus, constipation, loose stool, rashes, lethargy or irritability. By recognizing how specific symptoms correlate with Ayurvedic doshas, dietary shifts can be made that reduce the aggravating dosha and restore gut health. In addition to the foods we choose, other factors can contribute to digestive difficulties such as environmental toxins like pesticides and herbicides, foodborn pathogens, antibiotics, some medications, stress, an imbalanced gut microbiota, poor food combinations, nutritional deficiencies and inflammation. Professional guidance can help identify and mitigate such factors, promoting a healthy gut. Serious medical conditions including a range of gastrointestinal and other systemic disorders can produce similar digestive symptoms, so it is important to see a licensed medical professional if symptoms are chronic or intense. A licensed medical provider with additional Ayurvedic training can expand on these ideas with thoughtful, personalized guidance to foster vitality and wellness. — Annie Lindberg is the owner and licensed practitioner at The Point Acupuncture and Ayurveda in Madison Park.

Sound Transit looks to bridge $1.8B affordability gap for light rail extension By Spencer Pauley The Center Square
Sound Transit is looking at cost-saving ideas for the West Seattle and Ballard Link Extensions project to help with the $1.8 billion project-level affordability gap. The WSBLE project is currently in its formal public comment period for the Draft Environmental Impact Statement to outline the impact of the project on the environments surrounding the transit lines. Sound Transit Executive Corridor Director Cathal Ridge presented five proposals to address the affordability gap to the public via livestream on April 14. If implemented, these five ideas total over an estimated $1.5 billion in savings, he said. How-

These include shifting the elevated Fauntleroy station; eliminating the Avalon station; consolidating Denny and South Lake Union stations; potential station entrance refinements in the downtown area and shifting Ballard’s 14 avenue tunnel alignment. Ridge emphasized that these are ideas not formally included in the DEIS. “It’s an initial assessment of feasibility and potential cost savings ... Noxious Aquatic Weed Treatment Notice of Comment Period Northwest Aquatic Management, LLC located at 9727 Hwy 12 SW #369, Rochester, WA 98579 is seeking permit coverage under the Department of Ecology Aquatic Plant and Algae Management NPDES and State Waste Discharge General Permit jointly with the Newport Yacht Basin located in Bellevue, Washington. We are seeking coverage because we decided to use chemical methods to manage aquatic plants, algae or to perform phosphorus sequestration, and a permit from Ecology is required for this discharge. Our proposed project, where we plan to treat with chemicals as conditionally authorized by the general permit, includes the following geographical area: 3911 Lake Washington Blvd. SE Bellevue, Washington. Initial control will target noxious and nuisance vegetation to create a more favorable boating experience. Ecology has made a SEPA determination of significance with the adoption of an existing environmental document for this proposal. Any person desiring to present their views to the Department of Ecology regarding this application shall do so in writing within 30 days of the last date of publication of notice. Public notice will be published on 13 April 2022 and 20 April 2022. Comments must be submitted to the Department of Ecology to be considered. Any person interested in the department’s action of this application may notify the department of their interest within 30 days of the last date of publication of this notice.
Comments on our proposal may be emailed to: aquaticpesticideperm@ecy.wa.gov or mailed to: Department of Ecology Water Quality Program Attn: Aquatic Pesticide Permit Manager PO Box 478600, Olympia, WA, 98504-7600.
By potentially shifting the Fauntleroy station, Sound Transit could avoid impacting a large apartment building that would cause a number of displacements. That move alone would save $200 million. By consolidating the Denny and South Lake Union stations into one, Ridge says that could save as much as $575 million, the biggest cost saving measure amongst the five ideas. Ridge said he is not seeking board direction to adopt these ideas now, but he is seeking direction on whether to study any of these concepts further. The final environmental impact statement is scheduled to be published in 2023, with responses from the public included. Sound Transit is accepting comments on the DEIS until April 28.
Local neighborhood assessments and comments To read the Magnolia and Queen Anne community council responses to the local WSBLE proposal and find links to submit comments before April 28, go to https://www.dropbox.com/s/zo8m16p3wtc9nb4/ MCC%3AQACC%20ST3%20recommendations. pdf ?dl=0. Sara Maxana, the acting Sound Transit Program director, said this is the “largest infrastructure project in [Seattle’s] history.” Maxana believes more analysis is needed on potential small-business displacements and how they will be providing them during construction. Despite that, Maxana said the city intends to support the extension. “The city is a strong supporter
of [WSBLE]. We intend to support the project permitting and construction,” Maxana said. “We want to ensure that city decisions...are centered in racial equity and co-created and truth-checked with the community.” After the public comment period is over, Sound Transit will pass the five concepts to its board to see which of the ideas they want to further investigate.

There’s even a warning on some of them: The heat comes late but lasts. Diners need not worry, however: Steve keeps a stash of chocolate milk behind the bar in case the heat gets to be too much. “Tina is an amazing cook and chef. She did the whole food menu,” Steve Nicoles said. “I love it all.” Steve also keeps a lot of other special ingredients behind that bar. Relying on his decades of food and beverage service and his extensive travels, he has concocted a well-rounded list of local and exotic crowd pleasers. The current supply chain issues have necessitated a few changes and the occasional last-minute trip to the store, but he’s quite happy to have settled on the current menu of cocktails, wine, and beer, sourced from far and near. Steve’s current cocktail favorite is the Lost In Iceland, made with Reyka Vodka, Aperol, orange juice and an IPA float. He likes the balance between bitter and sweet, balanced with the freshness of the orange juice. While he admits he is “partial to all of them,” he also recommends the Stop & Smell The Roses: gin, sparkling rosé, lime, rose syrup and edible flower petals. The Traveling Goat had a soft opening late in 2021, and the Nicoles have been refining the offerings ever since. Steve describes the menu as “malleable.”

Steve and Tina have the shared vision of a neighborhood hangout and are eager to listen to the community feedback. “It’s been tremendous,” Steve Nicoles said of business. “People come to eat before events at Climate Pledge Arena or SIFF or Seattle Center, and some come just to drink and hang out. We are
just super happy that people are enjoying it.” They are hoping to further develop relationships and are “grateful to the community,” Steve said. Monday night is Bingo night at The Traveling Goat. Do all animals pass gas? Do cats fart? If you’ve ever been near a cat or dog when they tooted, the smell might have sent you running right out of the room. A lot of animals pass gas. But believe it or not, some animals do not. First, let’s talk about the gassy ones. When us cats and humans eat food, we are also swallowing air, or gas. It’s made up of elements like nitrogen and oxygen. The gas travels down into our digestive system and can take up space in our stomach and intestines. In our digestive systems, we also find tiny living things called bacteria. You might blame the dog for your farts, but the real credit goes to your bacteria. Not all bacteria are bad. In fact, a lot of bacteria are helpful. Some of them help break down your food into its simplest form, like proteins and sugars that you can use for energy and growing. Some get rid of waste. But as they do their different jobs, they produce a bit of gas. That’s what I found out from my friend Kristen Johnson. She’s a researcher at Washington State University who has tackled some big questions about how cow gas impacts the environment. She explained that while each bacterium makes a small amount of gas, there are millions of them doing it. It really adds up. This gas needs to leave your body somehow, so you can release

it either as a burp, a fart or by breathing. But if you were a clam or other mollusk, you wouldn’t toot. If you were a sea anemone, you wouldn’t fart, but you could probably burp. Last year, a bunch of researchers listed which animals they studied farted. According to their list, it appears that some worms don’t pass gas either. Then there are some animals that scientists
aren’t sure about, like spiders and parakeets. One researcher even found that some millipedes have hard valves on their rear ends that silence their toots. It would be nice if some other animals I know had those. Birds have the equipment to fart but apparently don’t. Some scientists have found that a lot of them don’t usually carry the same kinds of gas-forming bacteria in
their guts that humans and other mammals do. As it is, humans toot around 20 times a day, producing enough gas to fill up about half a two-liter bottle of soda. A lot of the time these farts don’t smell. But sometimes your bacteria release sulfur and other things that can get pretty stinky. It might not always be pleasant, but it’s totally normal. Seattle Center hosting Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration, May 1 Courtesy Seattle Center Seattle Center Festál continues with the Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration on May 1, the first day of National Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Following last year’s virtual festival, this year features five hours full of programming in the Seattle Center Armory. The Alan Sugiyama Hum Bow Eating Contest, dance groups, martial arts, music and more are in store at the API Heritage Month Celebration this year. Working to promote AAPI culture, heritage and contributions for current and future generations along with the general public, the festival aims to give space to Asian and Pacific Islanders to share the traditions they have preserved. The program begins at noon with the International Lion Dance Team and opening remarks and wraps up with Kaze Daiko Taiko and closing remarks. In between, MiYoung Margolis Dance Collective, Huayin Performing Arts Group, Halau Hula Ka Lei Mokihana | Ka Ua Noe, UWFASA Sayaw, Nihkil Bagga Band, Wu Shu Martial Arts, UW Vietnamese Student Association Dance Troupe, Live2Dance Seattle and The Kompany will perform on stage. “The Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration is an event dedicated to celebrating the unique and distinct AAPI cultures and communities that help make Seattle special,” Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell said in a press release. “As the first day of National Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, there
could not be a better way to uplift Seattle’s AAPI communities and stand together as a united One Seattle.” The Alan Sugiyama Hum Bow Eating Contest, named for the late longtime chair of the festival and community activist, will begin at 2 p.m., featuring chefs from nine local restaurants and bakeries. Cultural performance videos will also be shown, and local author Cindy Wong-Li, will do a children’s book reading of her book, Starhug. “Festál is all about celebrating cultures that make up the city of Seattle,” Seattle Center Director Robert Nellams said. “Seattle Center is proud to host a day that encompasses so many Seattleites and their cultures under the roof of the Armory.” More information is available on the API Heritage Month Celebration website, http://apiheritage.com/2022-festival/. About Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration and the Asian Pacific Directors Coalition The Asian Pacific Directors Coalition has been an advocate for the community and has provided the leadership and support to this event for over 25 years. The group has a deep commitment and ties to the AAPI groups represented at the festival and is interested in preserving and showcasing the rich culture of the community. APDC members and organizations are the primary sponsors, supporters and organizers of the event. Information on the festival is available at apiheritage.com and www.seattlecenter.com, as well as on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

org/events/blue-poppy-day2022-art-in-bloom/. Now I tend to plant all these jewel-like wonders in the same area, since they are mostly lovers of moist soil with partial shade. The extra bonus of this is I know to cram new hellebores, lilies or daisies elsewhere. It’s a place where neither I nor the squirrel-hunting dog walk often, so it’s working out all right so far. I think the ideal thing would be to have a raised bed or planter where you could showcase these plants in season and shuffle it to a less prominent spot the other 347 days of the year. I squished two weensy sunloving Globularia nudicaulis (a.k.a. naked-stalked globe daisy), which have almost navyblue round pea-sized flowers in my railing box by the front door where I can keep an eye on it. I can’t wait for it to bloom again. However, (you’ll be relieved to know) I have found a rationalization to add these tiny, blinkyou-missed-them visions. The reason I strive for a four-season (or in Seattle’s weather, really something like a 16-season) garden is to appreciate all the notes and chord changes of nature’s annual symphony. Much like holiday celebra-
“... I think adding more notes can only increase one’s mindfulness and connection to nature, for those who will take the time to do so." tions, these garden highlights act as touchstones to the earth’s movement through the year. It makes me feel grounded to cook pumpkin pie in fall and pick fresh raspberries in summer. So — despite my resolution to decrease the one-itis in my garden — I think adding more notes can only increase one’s mindfulness and connection to nature, for those who will take the time to do so. Thus, the two-week thrill of yellow Primula veris popping out from under my white-blooming Spirea “Ogon” is a hallmark of March’s crazy weather, reminds me to hunt for my variegated trillium to see if they survived living so close to the barbecue (it’s a high-traffic area), and to divide my snowdrop bulbs. Task-stacking, mindfulness and more plants — win-winwin!

Seattle Center celebrating 60th anniversary Six decades ago the Century 21 Exhibition, also known as the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, attracted nearly 10 million attendees during its six-month run and put Seattle on the world’s map. This month Seattle Center, the site of the World’s Fair, celebrates 60 years of growth as Seattle’s hub for arts and community gatherings, commemorating what is “New, Now & Next,” the theme of the celebration. Seattle Center and its more than 30 resident organizations kick off the six-month celebration of its 60th anniversary date beginning at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Seattle Center Armory Food & Event Hall mainstage. The public event, featuring remarks from Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, Seattle Center Director Robert Nellams and Pacific Northwest Ballet Executive Director Ellen Walker will honor the Center’s history
and provide a look forward to the future of the 74-acre campus. The celebration will include music by DJ Mike Steve and a spoken word performance by youth poet laureate Zinnia Hansen, as well as a few locals sharing a 60th birthday with the Seattle World’s Fair — who will receive a special gift and be on hand for a rendition of “Happy Birthday” by the Seattle Opera with a piano accompanist at 11 a.m., the exact time the gates opened to the world 60 years ago. Birthday cupcakes, from Trophy Cupcakes will be served to those attending the festivities — and as a throwback to the “World’s Largest Birthday Cake” unveiled at the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, a giant cutout of the cake will be available for photos. Digital Photo Booth — A free green-screen photo booth featuring keepsake photos via digital download will be available 11
