After his neighborhood businesses and restaurants were forced to either close or reduce services because of the coronavirus pandemic, a University of Washington graduate launched a grassroots effort to raise awareness and support those small enterprises. With a few friends, Capitol Hill resident Aubrey MacKenzie founded the Pledge 1200 campaign, which asks residents to pledge to spend as much of their coronavirus stimulus package money as they can to support the small businesses and restaurants in their neighborhoods or towns. Although MacKenzie realizes many people are spending their stimulus money on groceries and necessities, he hopes this campaign will get people to think about the small businesses and restaurants in their communities and how they need support to weather the crisis and stay open. “They’re supporting our families and friends who they’re employing, so I know the money is best spent supporting them,” MacKenzie said. “It’s the best way.” MacKenzie said he realizes asking CAMPAIGN, Page 8

Concerned about the spread of COVID-19 in Washington state, a Magnolia man has both personally and with others collected safety masks and distributed them to those in need. Sean Wang said via email, he first began collecting masks in early March out of concern for his friends. “From the very beginning, I knew people would need masks if the virus started to spread in the U.S.,” Wang said. Wang, who was born in northern China, received a few dozen masks from friends in

China and shared them with his friends and his children’s teachers at Lawton Elementary School. Wang was not content to stop there, however. “In mid-March, I came across articles saying that our healthcare workers and first responders did not have enough PPE,” Wang said. So, he enlisted the help of several friends in Shanghai, China, and ordered 1,200 disposable medical masks from a trustworthy factory with good quality control and had them shipped here. To spread the word, he posted on the social media platform Nextdoor and received many requests from
local doctors, nurses and pharmacists, he said. He delivered them to staff at Swedish Ballard, the University of Washington, Harborview Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente. Wang said he gave each person 40 to 80 masks but 200 to a nurse at Swedish Ballard emergency room because his mother received good care there two years ago. His 7-year-old twins also got involved by helping their dad deliver a few packages in Magnolia. “They felt very powerful knowing they were giving people weapons to fight the virus,” he said. Wang has also been part of
a mask collection and distribution effort through his volunteer work for the Seattle Tsinghua Alumni Association. Wang, who graduated from Tsinghua University in Beijing before moving to the United States for graduate school, said the STAA has hundreds of graduates in the Seattle area. It has a team of volunteers, some with related experience in healthcare or manufacturing, procuring the masks. The alumni association’s first shipment of 10,000 masks arrived April 1, and Wang distributed them in west Seattle to Columbia Lutheran Home, MASKS, Page 8

When you picture the carrot section at a grocery store in the United States, you probably imagine rows of orange. But carrots can come in a rainbow of other colors: purple, yellow, red and more. And the first carrots weren’t orange at all. They were stark white. That’s what I learned from Tim Waters, a vegetable specialist at Washington State University-Extension. He studies how to grow different kinds of vegetables and helps others learn how to grow them, too. Carrots you eat today are domesticated. Domestication happens when humans tame wild plants or animals for many generations. Over a long period of time, people bred the carrot ancestors for traits such as sweet taste and attractive color. Domestication helps explain how wolves became dogs and how teosinte became maize. It’s also how a wild white root became sweet and orange. “Before carrots were domesticated, they were believed to be white and very bitter and woody,” Waters said. “When people began domesticating them, the first types that were

bred and fed upon by humans were purple and yellowish in color.” Scientists think people first domesticated carrots in Central Asia around 1100 years ago. Even though the first carrots weren’t as sweet as the ones you eat today, people probably weren’t eating the roots. “It’s known that carrots were first grown primarily for seed and the uses of leaves,” Waters said. But as more colors emerged, the roots became tastier and became the more valuable part of the carrot. We don’t know exactly when the first orange carrots appeared. But we have a good idea of why that color stuck around — simply because humans liked it. “Orange wasn’t a naturally occurring color. It was kind of a genetic flaw, and then it was selected for,” Waters said. One story says orange carrots became popular in the Netherlands in the 1600s. Orange became the national color, so orange carrots were supposedly associated with the royal family and William of Orange. But orange carrots probably weren’t bred by the

orange pigment. That’s why vegetables with lots of betacarotene — like sweet potatoes, squash, and pumpkins — share the same color. But what about that rainbow of other carrot colors? They have their own special qualities, too. Purple carrots get their color from loads of anthocyanin, a chemical that is healthy for your heart. Carrot breeders have even created carrots with multiple colors. You can get the best of both worlds: a carrot that’s orange on the inside, purple on the outside! Sincerely, Dr. Universe

Dutch. They just became more popular there. Over time, orange carrots became the most common variety in some parts of the world. “That’s really why, in Western society, everybody perceives carrots to be orange,” Waters said. But that orange color isn’t just for looks. Orange carrots are packed with chemicals called carotenoids — specifically, betacarotene. Your body turns beta-carotene into vitamin A, which helps you grow and protects you from getting sick. Beta-carotene isn’t just nutritious. It’s also loaded with

Technology, music helps Aegis Living Queen Anne Galer continue to celebrate By Jessica Keller
QA&Mag News editor
Aegis Living Queen Anne Galer staff are doing what they can to make life for their residents as enriching as possible, while still maintaining safety practices during the coronavirus pandemic. From using technology to music, Aegis Living Queen Anne Galer general manager Kaylan Moore said caretakers and staff at the assisted living and memory care facility are navigating the best they know how to keep residents connected and engaged in these uncertain times. The goal, she said, is to shine brightness in what would otherwise be a very dark time. “We’re finding ways and reasons to celebrate every single day,” Moore said. Music plays a big part of that celebration and maintaining a sense of community, while keeping residents active and engaged. “Music is one of those things that can reach across all experiences and levels for our residents here,” music therapist Kaylee Tilton said. One way Tilton brings music to the residents is in one-on-one therapy sessions in their apartments. The inhome therapy Tilton provides is based on residents’ skills and needs. Often it involves helping a resident with what they are dealing with that day though song. “Using a medium that doesn’t require language can be really helpful in connecting, and music is just really accessible to everyone,” Tilton said. Residents are also encouraged to get involved through a hallway concert series, where Tilton and an intern lead residents gathered in their doorways in song. A recent event featured Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry Be Happy.” Tilton and her assistant also acted as “traveling troubadours” during another special event, Motown Monday Happy Hour, which featured Motown classics and drinks served from a happy hour cart to residents, who gathered at the threshold of their doorways. Tilton said the events bring a sense of normalcy and fun. “We’re trying to figure out how to do more of that,” Moore said. Tilton also recorded some old-time favorite songs for

Aegis Live, a hosted entertainment show that features music, exercise segments, trivia questions, jokes and a game show similar to the Price is Right. Aegis Live is produced by Aegis Living staff and is streamed into residents’ apartments at all the facilities. Moore said she is proud that Aegis Living has staff that can produce the content for Aegis Live and also live stream it into apartments “to keep residents connected and engaged to something bigger” and “create moments of joy and happiness.” Technology has played a key role in keeping the residents connected with each other and family and friends. One of the positive aspects of living at an assisted living facility is residents make friends and build a camaraderie with one another, Moore said. Friendships and camaraderie are not supportable in the ways they were before, however, and neither are visits from family and friends outside the facility. To help overcome that obstacle, Aegis Living sent tablets to all of their facilities, and Queen Anne Galer staff members familiarized themselves with using group video and group calling programs such as Skype and FaceTime to help fill the voids and loneliness residents may be experiencing, Moore said.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Councilwoman trying to help everyone stay informed
Editor, One of the things I’ve found most challenging during this unprecedented pandemic is how information is changing and evolving so rapidly. To be sure, the best thing we can
all do during this time is stay informed and adhere to guidance and safety precautions put in place by government and Public Health. That’s why I am sending out a daily COVID-19 e-news update that includes current information on what you can do to stay healthy. It also
CAMPAIGN, from Page 1 people to spend their money a certain way is a bold thing to do. “I recognize that it is a lot to ask, but, at the same time, I recognize that, by doing it, we’re coming together for our favorite businesses who may be closing down if we don’t,” he said. He also realizes many people may already be spending some, if not all, of their stimulus checks on their local small businesses and restaurants. “I’m running this campaign to raise as much awareness as possible,” MacKenzie said. “... Pledge 1200 serves as a unifying message to support small businesses, and hopefully this will get as many people as possible to think critically about where we will spend, not just our $1,200 stimulus checks, but all of our money.” MacKenzie stressed that Pledge 1200 is not asking for donations. Its only mission is to encourage people to pledge to spend their stimulus check money supporting their small businesses in their community. People who do
MASKS, from Page 1 Seattle Children’s Hospital, the Swedish Medical Center Foundation, Highline Medical Center in Burien and UW Valley Medical Center. Wang said the first order of masks were good for the general public or low-risk-area use. The masks in the STAA’s order are FDA-approved surgical masks, good for mid-riskarea use. He said some doctors wear the surgical masks outside of their N95 masks so they last longer. The STAA’s latest order of masks include 10,000 surgical masks and 1,000 N95 masks. Wang said, compared to other personal protective equipment, the masks are light weight, less expensive and in greater demand. For the same amount of money, the STAA can help the most people by ordering masks. “I am glad that I may have helped some in my neighborhood as many people are doing now,” Wang said. “I think it’s important to deliver the message that people care about each other and look after each other.”
provides information on grants for small businesses, renters, laid-off workers, homeowners and more, plus the latest numbers from Public Health on cases and fatalities in King County. I also try to include messages of hope and amusing pieces which can be helpful, as well as what you can do to help others. During this crisis I will be

sign the pledge will never be contacted, nor will their information be shared. As part of his campaign, MacKenzie has reached out to business owners and asked them to share their stories of how the pandemic and mandatory shutdowns have affected them. He then posted those stories to the Pledge 1200 website. He said the stories are “incredibly moving,” but the tone of them has changed as the shutdown has dragged on. “I think, from the businesses I’ve spoken to, they are one step short of terrified of what’s going to happen,” MacKenzie said, adding one restaurant
Wang said he also became involved because he considers it a way “to protect our humanity and grace.” He said it bothers him that, during this crisis, American and Chinese officials “keep throwing mud” and accusations at each other. Wang said, for example, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson used his personal Twitter account to try and link the coronavirus with the U.S. flu season and military. President Donald Trump ignored the World Health Organization’s warnings and has frequently referred to the coronavirus as the “Chinese virus.” As a result, Wang said, Asian Americans have been repeatedly hurt by both of these governments. “These irresponsible actions and simplistic blame game(s) are destroying our humanity and could bring out the dark side of people and cause serious consequences,” Wang said. “... So, I decided to step out and fight back by helping our neighbors, our seniors and our hospitals with compassion and love.” Wang said although his and the STAA’s efforts to procure and distribute masks are helpful at the moment, the donations are a temporary, stop-gap

owner reported revenue is down by 75 percent. He said small businesses have few options available to them when they lose revenue: They cut expenses; they search for additional funding through loans or grants; or they declare bankruptcy. As more businesses exhaust those options, owners risk having to shut their doors for good. “Some of our favorite businesses are not going to be there anymore if we’re not here to take care of them. So I think it’s a scary time,” MacKenzie said. At the same time, shopping isn’t as easy as going into a favorite boutique or restaurant anymore, MacKenzie pointed out. That’s why the Pledge 1200 website offers ideas for how people can support their favorite small businesses. For his part, MacKenzie ordered a couple of bags of decaf coffee from a local shop, Looking Homeward Coffee. He prepaid his barber for his next five haircuts and is ordering takeout from local restaurants. “So, it does take a little bit of creativity to do so, but I think in times of crisis we’ve really got to step up to preserve our favorite businesses,” he said.
solution. “Governments at all levels must show leadership and action,” he said. Wang also said that the biggest shortage of masks is for the N95. While many families may have a box or two in case of emergency, they might never have a chance to use them. He suggested starting an N95 bank, where people can give their N95 masks and get the same number back if they need them in the future. This could help minimize the shortage of N95 masks until production on those picks up. Wang said even though relations between China and the United States are tense at the moment, he hopes that doesn’t become the case in Seattle. Wang said the flying eagle monument built in 1995 at Fishermen’s Terminal commemorates the sister-port arrangement between Seattle and China’s Qingdao port and hopes that relationship isn’t tarnished. “If we look back, the relationship of the two great countries in 1995 seemed like a happy couple in marriage — different, but trying to see the good part of each other,” he said. “I am hoping we won’t see a divorce, which will benefit no one.”

MacKenzie also encourages people to pick up their orders and tip a little extra if they can. “Every dollar that goes to the delivery driver is money that could be spent at the restaurant,” he said. Thus far, the public’s response to the campaign has been overwhelmingly positive, MacKenzie said. He and his friends started Pledge 1200 on March 27, when the coronavirus relief package was signed into law, and as of April 14, 620,000 people have signed the pledge, with 84 percent coming from Washington state. MacKenzie said the campaign started small with he and his friends reaching out to family and friends. Since then, the news has slowly gotten out. MacKenzie said it was a bit of a surprise when someone from Wyoming signed the pledge because neither he nor his friends know anyone from that state. “It’s neat when our pledge has been spread beyond our network,” he said. To pledge, read business testimonials or for more information, go to pledge1200.org. Business owners are also invited to share their stories by emailing info@pledge1200.org.
Photo courtesy Sean Wang Magnolia resident Sean Wang has been part of an effort to procure and distribute masks for healthcare workers in the Seattle area. On April 1, the Seattle Tsinghua Alumni Association, for which Wang is a volunteer, received an order of 10,000 surgical masks. Wang helped distribute the masks in west Seattle.
