A rodent abatement program that used nonlethal means to reduce the rat population at the future 21Boston development site in Queen Anne was so successful organizers are ready to expand it into other areas. Ever since a snowy owl fans named Yuki showed up in Queen Anne in the fall of 2020, Tanea Stephens, Queen Anne wildlife activist and Raptors are the Solution Seattle chapter director, has tried to educate people and the businesses in Queen Anne about the dangers of using poison bait traps

Local jewelry store makes people, ethics a continued focus By Laura Marie Rivera Contributing writer

A Queen Anne jewelry company founded on the principles of people and ethics has expanded that mission even further in the last couple of years. Last summer, Boma Jewelry moved its headquarters to 41 Dravus St., near the Fremont Bridge. This family-owned business was founded in 1981 by Boon and Chieko Chaya, who focused on the triple bottom line: people, planet and profits. They built their own factory in Thailand that would, in turn, support and build their community of artisan jewelers. At the highest production levels, they employed hundreds of workers and sold

their jewelry at retailers like Nordstrom, American Eagle and Target. In time, the Boma owners decided they preferred a smaller operation so they could more easily control the quality for which they had become known. Today, the Boma Jewelry operation is modeled like a family and led by Chaya’s daughter, Suzanne Vétillart. Vétillart lives in Queen Anne with her four children and her husband, Étienne. She was born and raised in Bellevue and spent some of her formative years studying architecture at Columbia University in New York City. In 2009, she moved to Thailand to be closer to some of her extended family, and that is when she started

JEWELRY, FROM PAGE 1 to more appreciate the finer workings of the artisan community she had known all her life. Six years ago, Vétillart was delighted to return to the family business. “It’s jewelry that tells a story,” she said. “My parents were always kind of behind the scenes, but today’s audiences want to know what kind of products they are buying.” Vétillart said she wanted to be sure to communicate the quality of the jewelry as well as the provenance of their gemstones. Boma jewelry is made entirely from ethically sourced materials. The sterling silver earring studs are their most well-known product. The turquoise comes from a family-owned mine in Arizona. And Boma’s semi-precious stones are sourced from safe and transparent mines throughout the globe. “We want our customers to feel good, to know the quality of the pieces and to be proud of it,” Vétillart said. Raising that awareness for her

customers made her think about where Boma was as a business and where it wanted to go. As she was looking for a tool for benchmarking or certification, she started to learn more about the B Corp model. B Corp certification is for businesses that meet the highest standards to balance profit and purpose. It is a rigorous certification process and provides an added layer of governance and accountability. Some of the more wellknown B Corp companies include Patagonia, Seventh Generation, Athleta and Beautycounter. “There are only five B Corp jewelers in America, and it really shows our commitment to the holistic view of how to run a business,” Vétillart said of achieving the B Corp certification. Boma Jewelry is also a social purpose company, which means social and environmental factors are considered in decisionmaking. When the world shutdown because of COVID, and the Black Lives Matter movement came to the foreground, Vétillart realized

that she had never worked with a Black jewelry designer before because the company’s “diversity beyond Asian immigrants was limited.” Relying on the flexibility of the family business and the commitment to consider social factors, she immediately thought about “how we can do better.” In the summer of 2020, the family launched the Boma BIPOC Grant Program. It is open to BIPOC jewelry designers, creative directors and entrepreneurs who are looking to grow their business or learn to work with a production partner. This grant provides selected applicants $500 worth of sample production resources and mentorship. Since most of the applicants have not worked with a production team before, this opportunity helps bridge the gap between a one-off piece of jewelry and a full-scale production line. Boma has already worked with four BIPOC designers and is currently selecting the third round of grantees. The Boma Jewelry headquarters is not a retail space. It is part office and part showroom, fre-

quently opened for special events. This month is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and Boma is hosting an AAPI pop-up event featuring several local businesses from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. In addition to Boma Jewelry, shoppers can browse Lulumiere Candles and

REDBYJO leather goods while snacking on goodies from Marimakan Crab Chef, Grayseas Pies and Seattle’s newest chocolatier: Marble Chocolates. Kat Larson will be doing tarot card readings, and 10 percent of all Boma Jewelry sales will be donated to #StopAsianHate.

RODENTS, FROM PAGE 1 to reduce the number of rodents in Queen Anne. In early 2021, Stephens approached Maria Barrientos, principle at BarrientosRyan, the developer of the 21Boston project, and asked her to consider participating in a pilot program, Poison Free by 2023, at the development site where rodents populations are reduced using non-lethal means. Instead of hiring a pest control company to set out poison bait traps at the future 21Boston site, Barrientos contracted with Seattle’s Parker Eco Pest Control to administer a birth control solution at different areas at the site. The rat population numbers were then monitored by scientists with FYXX Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping cities and groups develop safe, effective population strategies for invasive or overpopulated mammal species. The birth control solution used by Parker Eco Pest Control doesn’t kill rats, instead it makes them infertile. The birth control is nontoxic for animals who come across it and does not kill animals who normally eat rats, like the snowy owl. Stephens said, after eight months, scientists with the fertility control expert team reported a 91 percent reduction in the rat population around the future build site. “I just feel like it’s a win-win situation for wildlife and people,” Stephens said. Not only is this better for the environment and animals in the food chain, Stephens said the fertility control solution is more effective than use of traditional anticoagulant rodenticides, which stop working after a time because rats stop visiting the poison bait stations, and rat numbers begin to increase after awhile. Most rats live between eight to 12 months, and they are fertile at two. They have on average four to seven litters, with nine to 12 pups in a litter, a year. This works out to be 15,000 descendants of one breeding rat in a year, Stephens

Photo courtesy Tanea Stephens The 21 Boston site in Queen Anne features signs stating the site is owl approved. Rather than using rodenticides to reduce the rat population at the site, nonlethal means were used instead. said. “So that is what we call rat math, and that is why it doesn’t work,” Stephens said of the poison bait stations. “It’s actually impossible to manage those rats when they stop using the bait stations.” To ensure the fertility program could be profitable to pest control companies, Stephens said Parker Eco Pest Control formulated a business model to make it profitable to use in their everyday business that others can follow, too. “Our hope is to inspire and motivate those people to change their models, too,” Stephens said. Stephens said with the pilot program a success, she is ready to move to the next phase of the project: taking the idea to other businesses and neighborhoods.

“For the rat birth control to be effective, everyone needs be involved,” Stephens said. She said if every business owner, from West Galer to McGraw on Queen Anne Avenue North, participated, it would cost them $18 a month for the rat abatement program. Stephens will now pitch the new program to other businesses in Queen Anne and then other neighborhoods. She is looking for volunteers to help with that. “Frankly, I don’t see why anybody who thinks they have a rat problem wouldn’t want to use this,” Stephens said. “It really is a no-brainer solution.” For more information, email Stephens at searatschapter@ gmail.com.

Grills are firing up all across the country and the savory aroma of smoky foods are wafting through neighborhoods far and wide. Burgers are a staple of grilling season, and grillmasters have a lot of leeway when it comes to what goes into their creations. Even though beef is often the meat of choice when making burgers, any ground meat can be used in its place. In fact, leaner meats, such as lamb, pork or chicken, may help people stay the course as they try to eat healthy. This recipe for “Chicken Burgers with Kiwi Salsa” from “125 Best Chicken Recipes” (Robert Rose), by Rose Murray is sure to please. To add even more variety in recipes, choose kaiser rolls, focaccia bread or pretzel rolls instead of plain hamburger buns. Chicken burgers with kiwi salsa Serves 6 1 egg 1 1/4 pounds ground chicken 1/3 cup dry bread crumbs 3 tablespoons milk or cream 1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper 6 toasted hamburger buns 1. In a bowl, beat the egg; mix in the chicken, bread crumbs,

SANELLI, FROM PAGE 4 that my life and my work would always be the same.” Two hours later, the words were harsher. They posed a question. Two questions. Then, a startling truth. “The New York Times” was my portal in between dreams (never a good idea), the Russian invasion of Ukraine, human suffering I didn’t want to think about, but I made myself read every account. For another hour I tossed and turned in the aftermath. It was 5:30 a.m. when I scrawled, “What about that bomb we dropped, that unthinkable bomb?” My mind raced. Then it (sort of ) changed the subject. “No other country slaughters cows as brutally as we do, and were these images to be put on full-color spreads in the ‘New York Times,’ no one could stand to look … but we’d have to look and then maybe the days of slaughtering 33 million cattle a year would be over!!!!!” The exclamation points ran off the pad. I was upset. And I remember with absolute clarity why I was so upset, aside from the Russians, the war, the bomb and all the heaving cows: During past travels, we’d driven past stockyards

in Texas. I had never tried to express my horror in writing. But earlier that evening I ate red meat for the first time since I was 17. I didn’t know I was eating it. It was in the sauce. I was fine. My stomach didn’t even seem to notice. My mind, however — clearly more sensitive to the thought of beef than my stomach — rebelled, leaving a shock wave in its wake. “My life has always been about small blisses, small wins.” Half an hour ago, this sentence surfaced during the nap I tried to take. The words made their way in. They made mistakes (I don’t like the word “wins”). They made me listen. To everything. Even the memory of that fort makes me smile. I managed to forget the world’s harms for a few hours and come back to my nest in the woods, and that’s the closest thing to happiness I can rally when I’m this afraid of Putin and this … tired. extended during the library’s COVID-19 system-wide reopening to accommodate patrons who needed extra time to retrieve or return items during the pandemic. Starting May 23, the library will return to a maximum hold time of 7 days (from 14 days) for books, CDs, DVDs and other physical items placed on hold. Scheduled library closures do not count against the 7-day hold limit. The library will also return to suspending accounts for items that remain overdue after 14 days (from 31 days). Since temporarily extending that timeline, the library has implemented auto-renewal for most items. Materials are automatically renewed up to three times if another patron isn’t waiting for the item. Peak Picks books and items checked out through Inter-Library Loan cannot be renewed. The Seattle Public Library also offers fine-free borrowing, and suspended accounts are reactivated once items are returned.
