By Laura Marie Rivera Contributing writer

Adrienne Campbell-Holt is the Founding Artistic Director of Colt Coeur theater company in Brooklyn and the 2018 recipient of the Lucille Lortel Visionary Director Award. This year, she got to experience the spring season in Magnolia when she came to town to direct the world premiere of “Afterwords” at The 5th Avenue Theatre. Life in Seattle looked a little different than what this New York City-based director and choreographer is used to, and she found it very luxurious. They really loved Ella Bailey Park for the open space and breathtaking views. Most of the time, CampbellHolt lives with her husband, actor Brian Wiles, in Manhattan’s Up-

For Magnolia woman, war in Ukraine is never far from her mind By Jessica Keller

Photo courtesy Janis Traven In this photo, Janis Traven’s cousins Igor and Viktor sit next to another family member when they visited New Jersey during 1990. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has left family’s with difficult decisions over whether to stay or flee their home country.

Janis Traven sees similarities between the violence that took place in Ukraine when her grandparents were growing up and to what is taking place now with Russia’s invasion of the country. Traven, who lives in Magnolia, said Ukraine was a dangerous place for Jewish families, including her own, who were frequently the target of violence in the early 20th century. She said her

grandfather told her that he used to sing to her grandmother before they were married to woo her. Then one day, he saw one of his relatives killed in front of him, and he lost his voice. “I think there are a lot of people who are not going to be able to sing any more in Ukraine,” Traven said. “It’s just heartbreaking.” Since Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine, Traven has paid close attention to what is taking place in Ukraine,

A Glimpse of China: Festival offers virtual music and more Courtesy Seattle Center Seattle Center Festál continues with A Glimpse of China —Seattle Chinese Culture & Arts Festival, a virtual afternoon program from noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday. It will be available to watch on the WCACC Facebook, Seattle Center Facebook and Seattle Center YouTube. A Glimpse of China explores traditional and contemporary influences of China, covering 5,000 years of history through folk dances, artwork and dance. The program begins with a welcome and Chinese drumming and music performed by Seattle Chinese Orchestra. The orchestra will perform with the pipa, a short-neck Chinese flute-like instrument. The International Wudang Martial Arts Academy will share a video narrative of their school’s ancient lineage and evolution

incorporating recorded demonstrations by masters from across the world. This will be followed by musical performances from Zhenlun Cello Ensemble featuring a quartet with drum, piano and erhu excerpt from the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon soundtrack. “A Glimpse of China is a festival accessible to everyone,” Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell said. “In the spirit of One Seattle, this is a great opportunity to learn more through celebration about a culture that continues to be distinctly influential across our City and communities.” The Seattle Chinese Dance Academy will perform traditional and ethnic dances, and Ms. Zuo Fan will perform a Chinese tea ceremony with Diancha, a method that dates to the Song Dynasty. A presentation of the making of a Chinese chair in the Ming Dynasty furniture style will be performed by Changzhou Yuantang.

Zi De Guqin Studio will present Chang’an Fantasy, ghost patrol in ancient Chinese instruments and costumes of the Tang Dynasty. “Festál honors communities that have found a home in Seattle,” said Seattle Center Director Robert Nellams. “A Glimpse of China is a fantastic program full of traditions and customs.” The program will conclude with Chinese Wushu and Taichi by Yijiao Hong’s Wushu & Taichi Academy. FAMILY, FROM PAGE 1 where she has cousins and extended family. Traven has two cousins, Viktor and Igor, from Zaporozhiya, and another, Yulia, who lives near Chernihiv, with whom she communicates through Facebook Messenger and text as much as she can. Traven said, other than sending support and messages, she has not been able to do more, although she offers and would certainly help. “I don’t know how to send stuff to them to get it there,” Traven said. “I told them if there’s anything we can do....” For now, Traven just waits for their messages and hopes they are well. Some of her extended family left the country early after the invasion, whereas Igor only left recently. According to a message Traven received May 8 from her cousin Victor, Igor left Ukraine and arrived in Beer Sheva, Israel, with his eldest daughter. “The trip was successful but dangerous,” Viktor wrote. “The bus route was bombarded with rockets and Russian planes.” Traven said, as of that message, Viktor was still in Ukraine, as was his son, Andrei, who is a thoracic surgeon and has to stay because his medical experience and skills are critical and needed. Traven said she is regularly horrified hearing about the growing number of deaths and destruction in Ukraine, including places that are meaningful to her

family. When Babi Yar outside of Kyiv, was bombed, she could only wonder about the cemetery where her grandmother is buried. “I don’t know, and there’s no way to know, and it doesn’t really matter whether her grave was disrupted,” Traven said. “Every day is just a confirmation of just how monstrous Putin is and how monstrous his army is and how monstrous war is.” Traven is also frustrated that Americans’ interest in what is taking place in Ukraine is slowly waning. “Honestly, I think it’s going on too long to maintain the interest of most Americans,” she said. ... “It’s an amazing story about resilience and clever people fighting with monsters, and unless the footage on TV changes, and unless there’s something new or bigger or more monstrous, I think that a lot of people are tuning out, and that’s kind of nauseating.” Traven said she wishes she knew what should be done to end the war in Ukraine and rebuild the country, but she thinks, regardless, the impacts will be felt for a long time, from refugees who fled the country to the economic impacts to Ukraine and other countries. She said she also doesn’t know how far the United States should go to help, especially since Russia has threatened to retaliate with nuclear weapons. “I’m stuck between thinking that we should avoid nuclear war, but it also seems like the only way that Putin is going to be stopped is through some show of force,” Traven said.

Healthier salad makes barbecues better

Metro Creative Services

Warm weather beckons people outdoors. Al fresco dining offers a chance to spend even more time outdoors, and many people will attest that no outdoor gathering is complete without the requisite grilled fare and complementary sides that are staples of spring and summer dining. Potato salad is one such food that turns up regularly this time of year in many shapes and forms. Traditional potato salad is delicious, but it may not be so great for health-conscious individuals, as it’s typically swimming in mayonnaise. A lighter version featuring Greek yogurt in the dressing is ideal for those who want to eat healthy. Greek yogurt also adds gut-healthy live active cultures to the recipe, which may provide gastrointestinal benefits. Enjoy this recipe for “Greek Yogurt Potato Salad” courtesy of The Diabetes Council and Pitchfork Foodie Farms. Campbell-Holt not only looked forward to returning to in-person theater, she was also excited about the opportunity to experience life in a Magnolia home and enjoy the semi-suburban lifestyle. “We luxuriated in so many of the singularly Seattle specifics: the lushness of the landscape, including a redwood tree in the back yard, the ease of having a car, the rich cultural offerings and the space,” she said. “The kids had their own rooms, which meant everyone slept so much better.” The nature, personal car and spare bedrooms are things that few families in New York City can enjoy. Campbell-Holt said her family appreciated having the space for a playroom, a spare bedroom for an office space, and even some room for family and friends that wanted to see her latest production. “Afterwords” is a new musical that centers around the lives of women and has an all-female creative team.

When she first heard it, she fell in love with the music by Zoe Sarnak, an New York City composer, and Jonathan Larson, an award winner whose work has been featured at prestigious theaters in New York city and across the country, and that was before she was joined by the book writer Emily Kaczmarek, a Los Angelesbased playwright and screenwriter who is also a Jonathan Larson Grant recipient. The music and lyrics are complemented by the choreography of Ebony Williams, a Boston native who has choreographed for Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Broadway and the movie version of “In The Heights.” The Seattle ties and audience reactions have been strong. “Afterwords” is receiving enthusiastic standing ovations, and CampbellHolt’s inbox is filled with rave reviews: “Every single thing about the show was so heartwarming;” “The show made me feel seen;” “What a beautiful piece of art;” and “I think it is my favorite musical of all time;” are just some of the comments. This work was workshopped at The Village Theater’s Beta Series in 2018 and an audio version with all Seattle talent was recorded during the pandemic hiatus.

Most notably, Ballard’s Eliza Palasz understudies the lead role and went on to perform with only one rehearsal. She described performing in her hometown again as surreal but thrilling. “I’m obsessed with Seattle,” Palasz said. “I love hiking, being outside, the ocean, fresh air. I’m always happy to be back here.” She said she was particularly excited to be on the same stage

where she grew up watching others. “The 5th Avenue Theatre has made a lot of positive changes as far as diversity and communication,” Palasz said. “Their commitment to new musicals is really encouraging.” Palasz said she had only worked with one female director before this production. “I love Adrienne, and I am so amazed that she was able to direct an entire show with her two small

Campbell-Holt said that balancing work and motherhood in the Pacific Northwest was challenging but enjoyable. She credits the local Facebook groups for their helpful suggestions and making the transition more manageable. At the beginning of the year, she posted in one of the parent groups asking for childcare recommendations. That is where she connected with Busy Bees, a new home-based daycare in Magnolia that made space for her children. And she said that the Magnolia Buy Nothing community was a lifesaver — with all the hand-me-down baby toys and equipment she needed. Her family enjoyed having the space to spread out while appreciating the neighborhood feeling, even running into a college friend on a visit to Uptown Espresso. Whenever the stress of work and parenthood started to get to her, she headed out for a run in the beautiful Seattle air. She said she is “very lucky to get to run in Central Park but Discovery Park is hands down the most spectacular running of my life.” People can still see “Afterwords” at the 5th Avenue Theatre, 1308 Fifth Ave, Seattle. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. today through Saturday, and 1:30 p.m. today and Saturday.

f only Hollywood had consulted a gardener to design the sets for “The Wizard of Oz.” They’d have gotten it right. Remember that iconic moment with Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and Toto standing on the Yellow Brick Road, looking at the Emerald City in the distance? Think of how that shot would have really popped if the road had been flanked with the chartreuse bloom stalks you see in the photograph: euphorbia characias wulfenii, sometimes sold as euphorbia veneta. Well into May, these Ozian flowers stand munchkin tall in clumps, often over 4 feet high and as wide, their domed blossom cylinders on stems lined with narrow celadon leaves. So spectacular and easy to grow is this startling and statuesque plant that it has been in cultivation in the Pacific Northwest for likely a century or longer. There are more than 1,600 members of this genus. A number, like E.c. wulfenii, are native to the Mediterranean, many referred to as spurge or milkweed. All are easy to grow given rich, quickdraining soil and ample sunlight. There are some surprises in this genus. Houseplant lovers may have grown African milk tree, euphorbia trigona or Crown of Thorns, euphorbia milii or E. splendens. The old-fashioned self-sowing annual Snow-OnThe-Mountain, native to central North America, is euphorbia marginata. If you ever bought gopher plant or mole plant and used it to discourage the ornery critters who give the plant its common name, you were growing euphorbia lathyris. If last month, you noticed mahogany shoots emerging in perimeter plantings with unexpected orange blossom clusters starting to unfold, you were looking at the much loved, but much under used euphorbia griffithii “Fireglow.” In time, this dazzler forms massive clumps with long-lasting fiery orange flower heads. When the foliage emerges, it combines powerfully with solid yellow or orange tulips or underplanted with cobalt blue grape hyacinths. Most surprising of all, the poinsettia that graces nearly every home in the winter holiday season is a euphorbia — euphorbia pulcherrima. When the blooms of euphorbia characias wulfenii lose their luster and start to turn to seed in summer, it’s time to cut the blooming stalks back to the ground. Carefully isolate each flowering stem, snip if off and compost it, but don’t remove the lower, new growth that will surround each of the old bloom stems. With all the old blooms gone, you’ll be left

Photo by Mary Henry During April and well into May, euphorbia stand in clumps, well over 4 feet high and wide. Gardeners have cultivated this easy-to-grow plant in the Pacific Northwest for likely a century or longer. with a handsome mound of new growth, bluish green, to enliven your fall and winter garden and have the stems upon which next year’s flowers will emerge. Now for the part of this story that would make the Wicked Witch of the West cackle with diabolical glee. The broken stems of many euphorbias ooze a milky sap, ergo the common name milkweed. To some, the sap causes a severe dermatitis, much like contact with poison ivy or poison oak. Long sleeves and garden gloves are a prudent uniform when cutting the old flower heads to the ground. Euphorbias should not be planted at the edges of ponds or near koi pools as the sap in the water can be fatal to fish. In some cultures, the sap is used for poison arrows or to stupefy fish. My family physician once contacted me saying he’d been gardening and had an outburst of splotched and itchy arms and inflamed eyes with blurred vision. He’d gotten it while gardening and wondered if I had any ideas. I responded, “My hunch is

you’ve been cutting back …. [I named and described the plant] ... and you let that milky sap get on your hands and then rubbed your eyes.” “Yes! Yes! That’s it!” I instructed him to get in the shower and scrub thoroughly, starting with his hands, followed by his arms and then rinse his face and flush his eyes with clean, lukewarm water. I got a thank you note that made me feel like a horticultural Jonas Salk. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t pleased with myself. Plants in 1- and 5-gallon cans will be in bloom in nurseries now, ready to put into your garden. So, follow the yellow brick road to your favorite nursery and get one, two or three of these eyepopping, easy-to-grow euphorbias and stick them wherever you’d like to add some real emerald punch to your garden. For at least two months of the year, and likely even when the plant is not sporting its flamboyant flowers, your eye will be drawn to the spot. You’ll be euphoric over your euphorbia. It will put you somewhere over the rainbow!

Teen chef program debuts at Garfield community center

Photo courtesy Monica Jones de Borges A Seattle teen takes a photo of a meal she learned how to prepare at a meal workshop at the Garfield Community Center recently. She is one of about 10 students participating in a new teen chef program organized by Seattle Parks and Recreation supervisor Jean Lee in partnership with the People’s Popup Pantry. In the program, which is free for students to attend, teens learn how to make a dish taught by a local chef before tasting their creations. Lee said she hopes to expand the program to other community centers throughout the city to benefit more teens, but money is critical. Lee and volunteer/donation coordinator Monica Jones de Borges are trying to raise money for the teen chef program so it can continue and remain free for students. Jones de Borges is also seeking additional chefs to conduct cooking sessions. To learn more, or to donate, go to peoplespopuppantry.com, or email Monica@peoplespopuppantry.com.

Classic Work Boat Show and Maritime Fest this weekend

The Classic Work Boat Show and Maritime Fest will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at South Lake Union Park, 860 Terry Ave. N. This is an in-person, free event presented by Northwest Seaport Maritime Heritage Center, https://www.northwestseaportalliance.com.

PNB presents annual Next Step showcase in Uptown next week Next Step, Pacific Northwest Ballet’s annual choreographers’ showcase, returns to the stage — although not the stage PNB fans are used to – for two nights of original danceworks. This year’s showcase moves to On the Boards in the lower Queen Anne/Uptown neighborhood, for two evenings next week with six premieres by Pacific Northwest Ballet’s choreographers Malena Ani, Jonathan Batista, Mark Cuddihee, Noah Martzall, James Kirby Rogers and Lily Wills, all set on the Professional Division student dancers of PNB School — the dance stars of tomorrow, on stage today, according to a press release. Next Step will be presented two nights only, at 7:30 p.m. May 25 and 26 at On the Boards, 100 W. Roy St. Seating is first come, first served. Doors and box office open at 6:30 p.m., and seating begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 general admission and may be purchased through the PNB Box Office, 206441-2424, in person at 301 Mercer St. or online at PNB.org. Subject to availability, tickets are also available one hour prior to show time at On the Boards. There will be no student or senior rush tickets sold for Next Step. According to a Pacific Northwest Ballet press release, “Next Step provides dancers, studio space and rehearsal time for company members who wish to hone their choreography skills. It was originally conceived by Artistic Director Peter Boal as a means to develop emerging choreographic talent, and as a channel for PNB School Professional Division students — talented young artists one step away from their professional careers — to participate in the creation of a new work. “This year’s selected choreographers for Next Step are creating with a force and urgency that has never been seen in this program,” program coordinator Eva Stone said in the press release. “The work speaks to how these artists see the world after their world dramatically changed. Both the choreographers and the dancers have responded in a deeply physical and visceral way. And with the intimate setting offered at On the Boards, this will be a

show not to be missed!” All Next Step pieces will be performed both nights. Seattle uses $1M in stimulus funds to keep maritime education afloat By Spencer Pauley The Center Square

Seattle City Councilmember Tammy Morales touted one-time funding from the American Rescue Plan Act to aid in sustaining Seattle Maritime Academy operations. A portion of the $1 million expenditure will provide gap funding to Seattle colleges for operation of the Seattle Maritime Academy in the coming school year. The remaining funds will be allocated for community outreach and recruitment through SMA. The academy will partner with Seattle Public Schools for the Maritime Vessel Operations Program, and Advanced Manufacturing, which is part of the Seattle Skill Center at Seattle Public Schools. Morales’ funding is the only funding dedicated to sustaining the Maritime Vessel Operations Program with Seattle Colleges as SMA has not received any private dollars, according to the Seattle City Council. “I’m excited to secure critical gap funding to support Seattle Colleges’ Maritime Academy and Seattle Public Schools’ Maritime Vessel Operations Program for the 2022-2023 school year,” Councilmember Morales said in a statement Friday. “Keeping these programs operating will increase access to training for young people looking for high-paying, skilled jobs in the Maritime indus-

try. Jobs that offer stable employment and a good career pathway,” she added.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee added his voice of approval for the subsidy. “Maritime is one of Washington state’s core industries but it faces an uncertain future as we grapple with a shortage of qualified mariners,” Inslee said in a statement last week. “SMA opens up doors for students to launch amazing career opportunities on the water and is a valued partner of our Washington State Ferries team.” The funding that was announced Friday comes to SMA as riders of the ferry system in Seattle deal with long waits and canceled sailing due to a ferry worker shortage. Seattle Colleges Chancellor Shouan Pan said that the $1 million will help with this issue as students receive training necessary to work within the Seattle maritime industry. “As we at Seattle Colleges struggle with how to continue providing the critical training in face of a major budget shortfall, I am thrilled that the city of Seattle and City Council are redirecting funds to help bridge our budget gap,” Pan said. “This funding will allow us to address the shortterm needs as we work with the state and maritime industry to explore longer-term solutions. Washington State Ferries began partnering with SMA last month to provide a 90-day paid internship program for SMA enrollees to gain experience before entering the maritime workforce.
