After putting in 14-hour days for the last month in preparation for the opening of her second business, local businesswoman Courean Napolitano is excited for this weekend. Saturday marks the grand opening for Napolitano’s new business, Vixen Collection, situated next to Starbucks on Queen Anne Avenue North, in the former Peridot space. Napolitano has owned Vixen in Magnolia for 20 years but has considered expanding for some time, and she has high hopes for her new location. “This is something that I wanted to do prior to the pan-

Queen Anne glassblowing artist making a name for himself By Laura Marie Rivera Contributing writer

Photo by Laura Marie Rivera Queen Anne artist Preston Singletary stands in front of La Diab Phish, his glass and steel octopus sculpture, at Climate Pledge Arena. He wears an ivory bear claw necklace commemorating the kakawin-chealth name, which means “transforming killer whales,” bestowed upon him by Nuu-chah-nulth artist and his tribal elder mentor Joe David, who he met at Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood.

Queen Anne glass artist Preston Singletary is making a name for himself in the state and around the country this year, but the Native American artist’s 2022 is special in more personal ways, too. Last October’s installation of his glass and steel octopus sculpture, La Diab Phish, at the Seattle Center kicked off what is turning out to be a strong year for Singletary. He was also named as James Renwick Alliance for Craft’s 2021 Master of the Medium for glass. In January of this year, Singletary’s show “Raven and the Box of Daylight” opened at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D.C., and he received the Artist Trust’s 2022 Arts Innovator Award. In February it was announced that he’d been elected to the American Crafts Council’s 2022 College of Fellows. And on June 25, a very personal totem commemo-

rating his family history will be installed in Sitka, Alaska. As well, this year, he has been featured in “The Seattle Times,” “Smithsonian Magazine” and the cover of “UrbanGlass Art Quarterly.” “After 39 years working as a glass artist, I am now an overnight sensation,” Singletary joked. Singletary is a Native American glass artist who has deep ties to the local arts community and to Alaska’s Tlingit tribe. He was born in San Francisco but grew

BOUTIQUE, FROM PAGE 1 demic,” Napolitano said. Initially she was considering a sites in Ballard and Bainbridge Island, but then the store front on Queen Anne Avenue North became available, and she knew it was where she wanted to open as she and her family have long ties to the community. “It looks so different from when I was a kid, and I want to infuse a little bit of charm into the main drag of Queen Anne,” Napolitano said. Whereas Vixen in Magnolia will remain a day spa and clothing retail space, Vixen Collection will feature clothing for women and later for men, home decor, housewares and gifts. Napolitano said the price point is considered moderate. Napolitano said her aesthetic is “beach chic” and describes it as being subtly sophisticated with California and a “endless summer” feel as her inspiration. Despite moving to a location close to other stores similar to her own, she said all the boutique owners work

together so they don’t duplicate brands and, instead, complement each other. “For me, it just feels like it’s a destination,” she said. “I want people to come up her to Queen Anne or Magnolia.” Napolitano said part of her business model includes hiring staff locally and becoming active in the Chamber of Commerce. “What I hope to do in the community we’re involved in is become a part of the fabric of the community,” she said. Napolitano said, after Saturday, she will split her time between her Magnolia and Queen Anne stores, which she knows will keep her busy, but she is excited for the opportunity. “I live here. I love what I do,” she said. “My children are grown. This is my baby.” Business hours are tentatively 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays, but that will stay flexible until Napolitano determines shopping habits. Festival Sundiata presenting Black Arts Fest at Seattle Center Seattle Center Festál continues with Festival Sundiata presents Black Arts Fest, an in-person festival Friday through Sunday in the Seattle Center Armory Food & Event Hall, the Fisher Pavilion Rooftop and the Mural Amphitheatre. This year’s festival, which is free and open to the public, has a lineup of performers, vendors and food in celebration of Juneteenth and Father’s Day. Guest artists from across the country will convene in Seattle, including The Bar-Kays, Rick James’ Original Stone City Band, The Queens of Soul Jazz, Saeed Renaud and Kalimba. Other activities feature an art gala, youth drill and dance teams, a children’s village, an African dance troupe and African drum circles. Other festival highlights in-

clude a marketplace with over 60 vendors, Tuskegee Airmen, Buffalo Soldiers, and the American History Traveling Museum: The Unspoken Truths. “The Black arts scene is alive and well in Seattle and this is an exciting opportunity to engage and celebrate,” said Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell in a press release. “Let’s build One Seattle through vibrant artistic expression, honoring our dynamic communities and sharing common experiences with one another.” Festival Sundiata celebrates Black culture and educates the community on the contributions of African Americans who form a melting pot of cultures. Festival Sundiata is the longest-running African American festival celebrated in the Pacific Northwest and Seattle, holding its first festival in 1980.

The festival is named in honor of Sundiata Keita, the historic and legendary Mansa (King of Kings) of the Mali Empire in West Africa. King Sundiata rescued his people’s griot and created one of the most significant cultural and economic kingdoms in Africa. Information on the festival is available at festivalsundiata.org and www.seattlecenter.com, as well as on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. Seattle Center Festál cultivates a deeper understanding of the cultures and ethnic diversity that contribute to the vibrancy of the Pacific Northwest. The series links together 24 free festivals presented on weekends from February to November, each with its own cultural focus, identity and range of engaging activities.

State officials caution against touching sick or dead wild birds Washington State Department of Health and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife are asking the public to avoid contact with wild birds, especially sick or dead wild birds or their young. An outbreak of avian influenza, also known as bird flu, is impacting wild birds including Canada geese, snow geese, bald eagles and other raptors. State officials ask people who encounter sick or dead wild birds to alert WDFW using the agency’s reporting tool, https://survey123.arcgis.com/ share/a384e90f69744f2e846135a9ce80027f. While avian influenza infections among people are rare, they can happen when the virus gets into a person’s eyes, nose, or mouth, or is inhaled. People may

up in Seattle, attending Lincoln High School in Wallingford. His advice for up-and-coming artists and perhaps even his younger self is that “Good things come to those who work hard.” “If you want to be an artist, you have to work all the time: volunteer, work for free, learn through practical experience,” Singletary said. Before discovering the world of glass, he described his younger self as “a dreamer, social with friends, easily distracted, but intent on chasing a life as a musician.” He played piano, bass and guitar, and still does in his spare time. At the age of 19, he went to work at the Seattle Glass Studio. After six months as the night watchman, he was offered the opportunity to learn how to make paperweights and holiday ornaments. He got to help his friend-turned-mentor Dante Marioni work, and the monetary incentive for making more pieces “felt special,” he said. While Singletary became a student at Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, he developed his talents through work and mentor-

be at greater risk of bird flu virus infection during close or lengthy unprotected contact (not wearing respiratory protection or eye protection) with infected birds or surfaces contaminated with the mucous, saliva or feces of infected birds. “Although the risk to people is low, bringing a sick bird into your home or a veterinary hospital could spread an infection to humans and other animals,” said Dr. Tao Sheng Kwan-Gett, Washington State chief science officer at the Department of Health. “Don’t take a chance — the safest thing to do is to avoid all contact and report the bird to Fish and Wildlife.” According to the press release, Avian influenza viruses, such as the H5N1 strain currently circulating in the United States are contagious among certain domesticated bird species and can sicken and kill chickens, pheas-

ants and turkeys, among other domestic fowl. The virus is often spread to domestic birds through interactions with wild birds. Use the online form to report sick/dead wild birds suspected of avian influenza to the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife. Report sick/dead domestic birds to Washington State Department of Agriculture’s Avian Health Program: 800-606-3056 or visit, https://agr.wa.gov/departments/ animals-livestock-and-pets/ avian-health/avian-influenza, for information about how to protect backyard flocks. Bird hunters should follow standard safety steps to avoid potential exposure to avian influenza and other viruses or bacteria. People who develop flu-like symptoms within 10 days of contact with ill or dead wild birds should contact their local health jurisdiction and alert their healthcare provider.

ships along the way. He was helped along by the late Benjamin Moore — one of the most influential American glassblowers according to “UrbanGlass” — and the late Marvin Oliver, an indigenous American artist and University of Washington professor. In 2010, he was awarded an honorary PhD from University of Puget Sound. He is also a teacher and a member of the Pilchuck Glass School Board of Trustees. As a successful working artist, he is now also an employer. His studio is run as a corporation with dedicated employees that take the work very seriously. In addition to employing full-time and part-time contractors to help create his works, he partners with wood carvers and glass and metal fabricators. “I did not know I’d end up running a corporation, but once I entrusted steps to different people, it became very liberating,” Singletary said. It took the entirety of his team to bring “Raven and the Box of Daylight” to fruition. It is a largescale, immersive art experience that tells the story of the Tlingit legend. The installation combines video and projected sounds to en-

velop the viewer and highlight the glass sculptures that are bringing the story to life. Singletary said the raven story is a personal favorite of the artist and has been told in many iterations throughout past generations. This exhibit was first shown at the Tacoma Museum of Glass in 2019 and later at the Wichita Art Museum on its way to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, where it is on display through the year. Another deeply personal work is the bronze Family Story Totem that will be installed in Sitka, Alaska, later this month. It shares some of his Tlingit family history, specifically the story of his grandmother, Susie Johnson. According to Singletary’s family history, she had a pet grizzly bear that liked the sweet taste of taffy when she was young. The totem portrays a grizzly, his grandmother with a blanket, an orca and an eagle. Singletary sees the work as elevating storytelling and using the visual language of the oral tradition to return the spirit of his grandmother to her ancestral lands. With family and friends in attendance, it will be a full-circle moment for Singletary.

Dad’s Day dining he’s bound to love Metro Creative Services

Father’s Day is an opportunity to shower Dad with extra love and attention. Special outings and heartfelt gifts typically are part of the celebration. Some children may want to go above and beyond by whipping up a meal that Dad is sure to enjoy — particularly a father who spends his fair share of time by the stove or in front of the grill. Individuals may be quick to think steaks or chicken when considering grilled fare, and these foods certainly can be delicious offerings. However, juicy and flavorful lamb also tastes great when cooked on the grill. This recipe for “Lamb Chop Lollipops with Jalapeno Mustard” from “Jon Bonnell’s Texas Favorites” (Gibbs Smith) can be eaten by hand right off the bone when tailgating with Dad or served more traditionally at home with the family.

Lamb Chop Lollipops with Jalapeno Mustard

Serves 6-8 2 frenched* racks of lamb (8 bones each) 1 sprig fresh rosemary 2 tablespoons Chinese hot mustard 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons olive oil Jalapeno mustard 1 sprig fresh rosemary 8 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1 fresh jalapeno, seeded and diced Juice of 1 lemon * Frenched refers to meat cut away to expose part of the bone. Rinse the racks of lamb lightly under cold water. Pat dry with paper towels, then cut into individual chops by cutting between the bones. Strip the rosemary

leaves from the stem and chop; discard the stem. Combine the hot mustard with the garlic, salt, pepper, oil and half of the chopped rosemary. Rub the lamb chops with this mixture and let them marinate in the fridge for 2 hours before grilling. Grill or broil the lamb chops quickly to desired doneness. Serve hot with Jalapeno Mustard as a dipping sauce. For the Jalapeno Mustard: Strip the rosemary leaves from the stem and chop; discard the stem. Combine the rosemary with the Dijon mustard, jalapeno and lemon juice.

Seattle woman finds her voice, amplifies others through The Shattered Glass Project By Laura Marie Rivera Contributing writer

Rebecca O’Neil, a longtime Madrona resident, was looking for ways to connect with and amplify other women’s voices and talents when she created The Shattered Glass Project as a graduate school project. The program grew out of O’Neil’s desire to create opportunities in theater for women and other voices marginalized because of sex or gender and tell those untold stories in the Seattle area. “I wanted a place that would give women and nonbinary folks the opportunity to work as actors, directors, playwrights and producers,” O’Neil said. During her journey, she said she has learned a lot more about the benefits of diversity and “how heterogenous teams achieve more than non-heterogenous teams. “When we work with a group that is not the same as we are, we can achieve more and be more creative,” O’Neil said. The Shattered Glass Project came together while she was working toward her arts leadership master’s degree at Seattle University. The graduate program brings together leaders from across the arts communities with the goal of empowering a new wave of arts professionals. It teaches business, management and community engagement skills, while incorporating social justice into all it does. O’Neil started the master’s program in 2017 while she was work-

ing at Seattle University’s Law School doing continuing education and events management. Her cohort was larger than usual, but she said members “really liked each other,” and they all had their “little quirks.” “I knew from the beginning that I wanted to start a theater company that would feature women and especially older women,” O’Neil said. O’Neil, a Pacific Northwest native who studied drama at Mills College and in England for a year, has been acting semi-professionally for years. She knows, however, that no matter how good an actor is or how great their training, only so many roles are created for women, and even less for women of a certain age. As well, while the majority of ticket buyers may be women, there continues to be a gender gap on the stage and behind the scenes. According to 2020 statistics from Women in Hollywood, a movement that educates, advocates and agitates for gender diversity and inclusion in Hollywood and the arts, less than 30 percent of screenwriters were women, less than 10 percent were Black, Indigenous and people of color women, and only 1 percent were writers with disabilities. O’Neil said The Shattered Glass Project is a fiscally-sponsored Shunpike program designed to encourage new voices and create professional opportunities and growth and “to say to the rest of the community: Look at the great

Seattle Rep’s ‘Bruce’ offers tale of making of ‘Jaws’ Braden Abraham, artistic director of Seattle Rep, is excited to finally bring ‘Bruce’ to the main stage through June 26. It’s the world premiere of the musical by Richard Oberacker and Robert Taylor and tells the tale of the making of the movie “Jaws,” starring Tony-nominated Jarrod Spector as Steven Spielberg and “Bruce” as the animatronic shark that was malfunctioning for most of the film. As Spielberg struggles to make the shark and the film work, the musical alternates between dramatic and amusing ‘and somehow manages to create a thriller onstage,’ Abraham said. He first read the play three years ago and loved it. It was workshopped during the pandemic and originally scheduled to run in 2020. Abraham said, just like the movie, ‘Bruce’ is a terrific story. ‘Even though you think you know the story, you don’t quite know how it turns out, and it feels like the shark is everywhere.’ Show runs at 7:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays at Bagley Wright Theater. Tickets can be purchased at www.seattleRep.org.will be vacated by Sen. Reuven Carlyle, who chose to not run again.

NETTLES, FROM PAGE 5 in abundance throughout the Pacific Northwest in moist areas and along lakes and streams both at sea level and in the mountains. Stinging nettles appear in clusters, with leaves growing in opposite pairs on square stems. The leaves are variously round or long and narrow but always form a sharp tip and present with serrated edges. I’ve seen these plants grow over 6 feet tall, but I regularly observe them in the 2- to 4-foot range. Wearing gloves to protect your fingers, simply pluck the top three pairs of leaves on plants that have not yet flowered. Place these nettle tops in a bag to bring home; remember to inhale and savor the herb’s energizing aroma. Be sure to collect from patches that have not been sprayed with pesticides and are free from industrial and conventional agricultural runoff. Also, harvest modestly and thoughtfully, leaving most of the plants to grow and propagate, encouraging the patch’s sustainable future. If you love nettles as much as I do, you may also opt to grow them in your back yard if they aren’t growing there wild and free already. Happy nettle hunting, tea-sipping and pesto eating! Northwest nettle pesto 4-5 cups blanched local spring nettle leaves and stems (or 2 cups dried organic nettle leaves) 1 cup toasted organic walnuts, pine nuts or hemp seeds Juice from 1 medium-sized lemon 1/2 teaspoon finely ground sea salt (or to taste)

7 peeled organic garlic cloves (or to taste!) Fresh ground pepper (to taste) 1/4 cup organic extra virgin oil (or to desired consistency) A touch of any other culinary herb that calls you, for added variety, verve and nutrition. Kitchen herbs that play well with the pesto in my experience include rosemary, thyme, cilantro and basil. 1. Place nettle leaves in a pot of boiling water for 90 seconds to neutralize stinging hairs. Be sure to wear gloves to handle the un-boiled nettles if you don’t want to get stung. Promptly remove the nettles and place them in a cold-water bath (to bolster their brilliant green color). Once nettles have cooled, remove them by the handful, squeeze out the water and place them on a towel to dry. 2. Toast seeds or nuts in frying pan or oven until golden brown. Combine nettles and remaining ingredients except olive oil in a food processor or blender, and blend until ingredients form a paste. 3. Slowly pour in the olive oil, continuing to pour and blend until desired consistency is reached. Enjoy! This wild, local, seasonal pesto is a wonderful crudite dip for slices of raw carrots, celery, cucumbers and daikon root. You can also use it as a sauce, adding savory, medicinal Northwest spring deliciousness to your pasta, chicken, tofu or grilled veggies. — Annie Lindberg is a licensed practitioner and the owner of The Point Acupuncture and Ayurveda in Madison Park

“It was really unexpected to have someone put their full faith in me like Rebecca did,” Kozar said. They are also the stage manager for the TSGP’s upcoming production of “Want,” the company’s first production inside a theater, later this summer. Kozar said they are looking forward to calling a show again. The stage manager’s job is “a bit like conducting an orchestra, controlling anything that moves on the stage, when the lights go off and on, and all of the sounds happening,” they said. “I say when and how it happens,” Kozar said. And things are happening at The Shattered Glass Project. Since O’Neil’s thesis project in 2019, TSGP has been refining its incubator mentorship program, which is non-hierarchical and everyone can teach and learn. “You’re going to walk out of here and know a lot of people and have a network to get jobs,” O’Neil said.
