QA&Mag News editor

After spending the last 29 years at St. Anne School, first as vice principal and now principal, Thursday marks Mary Sherman’s last day as an educator. Her history with the Catholic school actually began 61 years earlier — as a first-grader, and Sherman thinks it is nice that she is retiring from the longtime educational institution that she attended as a girl, as did her four children and her father. She said her formative years as a schoolgirl attending St. Anne School played a pivotal role in her career. “Almost as long as I can remember, I wanted to be involved in education. I wanted to be a teacher,” Sherman said, adding she was inspired by the teachers and nuns at St. Anne. Sherman began her career

QA therapist teaches moms, others self-care By Laura Marie Rivera Contributing writer

Photo courtesy Hanna Kreiner Queen Anne mom and therapist Hanna Kreiner, seen her playing with her children, knows practicing self-care is an important piece of beiing a parent.

Queen Anne resident Hanna Kreiner, a licensed therapist, not only teaches mindfulness and self-compassion in her practice, she applied her guidance and tips into a book for new mothers after becoming a mom herself. Kreiner has made her home in Queen Anne since 2018. She said she loves the beauty and walkability of the neighborhood and the strong sense of community. She has enjoyed meeting friends at the Community Center and Big Howe playground, dining at the local restaurants, seeing neighbors at Queen Anne Farmers Market, and even running into her doctor at Ken’s Market. “It’s the only place I’ve lived as a parent, and I can’t imagine a better place to be,” she said. When Kreiner and her husband, Brian, moved to Seattle in 2018, she decided to open her own practice. Even though she was eight months pregnant at the time, she knew it was something she wanted to do after taking time to bond with her baby. What she didn’t know was how important self-compassion would

WSDOT offers tools for people traveling over holiday weekend Courtsey WSDOT With the Fourth of July holiday fast approaching, the Washington State Department of Transportation’s highly anticipated travel charts, https://wsdot.wa.gov/travel/holiday-weekend-travel/4thof-july-weekend-travel-times, are now available to help people plan ahead. The weekend prior to Monday, July 4 is expected to see increased travel on many key routes including Interstate-5, I-90 and ferry service throughout the Puget Sound and San Juan Islands. The closure of the U.S.-Canadian border the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in unreliable travel data and wait times for travelers. For this reason, WSDOT will not produce travel charts for the border crossing this year. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination remains a requirement for entry into Canada. WSDOT encourages travel-

ers to “know before they go,” and follow these tips whether traveling across town or the beautiful Evergreen State: • Get informed about WSDOT’s online tools, including the WSDOT mobile app, traffic cameras and email alerts. • Visit online traveler information, https://wsdot.wa.gov/travel, for traffic, weather, ferry schedules and a real-time travel map. • Follow WSDOT’s social media accounts, such as several Twitter accounts and the agency Facebook page. • Pre-program vehicle radio stations to 530 AM and 1610 AM for highway advisory radio alerts. • Have a backup outdoor destination if a first choice is full. If parking lots are full, find an alternative site and never park along road shoulders, as this is unsafe for everyone on the roadway. • Allow extra time for travel to avoid rushing or distraction. • Carry extra food and water as well as extra masks and hand sani-

tizer as an added precaution for emergencies or unexpected stops. Highway construction paused Most state highway construction work is suspended through the holiday weekend — including Friday — to ease congestion. However, Revive I-5 work, which requires multiple lane closures in downtown Seattle will take place beginning 9:30 p.m. Friday through 6:30 a.m. Monday. Please stay alert for new lane shifts or work zone staging areas that may remain in place. And please give any emergency repair crews plenty of space to work safely. Snoqualmie Pass No construction or lane closures are planned on I-90 from Friday until Tuesday. However, the usual holiday increase in traffic volumes means travelers should expect eastbound delays beginning on Thursday then westbound Tuesday. Receive text message alerts about significant delays by texting the number 468311 with the words “WSDOT Snoqualmie.”

Tolling In the Puget Sound, weekend toll rates will be in effect Saturday through Monday, on the SR 520 bridge and SR 99 tunnel. The I-405 express toll lanes will be free and open to all drivers on the weekend and Monday holiday. Ferry travel People boarding a state ferry by vehicle should prepare for long waits. Peak travel times on most routes are expected to be westbound Thursday and Friday, then eastbound, Monday and Tuesday. Customers also can bypass vehicle lines by traveling as a walk-on passenger. All riders should double check the sailing schedules as some routes are operating on timetables that are different than prior to the pandemic. Visit the Washington State Ferries website, https://wsdot. wa.gov/travel/washington-stateferries/, for more details on vehicle reservations, rider alerts, checking terminal conditions and COVID-19 travel updates.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still recommends wearing face masks on indoor transit, but they are no longer required. Trains, airports and transit Amtrak Cascades passengers are encouraged to purchase tickets early and should plan to arrive at the station one hour before departure. Trains are running between Seattle and Eugene, Oregon. Buses are operating for travel between Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia. Masks are encouraged, but not required on all trains and buses. Visit www.amtrakcascades. com/ or call 800-USA-RAIL for tickets. For information about traveling via state-sponsored airports, visit wsdot.wa.gov/travel/ aviation/airports-list or call 360788-7437. Check with any local public transit agencies for any holiday schedule or service changes, including some Dial-A-Ride and fixed-route service that may not run on holidays.

Local students named Nico Luiggi Scholarship recipients QA/Mag News staff report

Local students, Cindy Tan and Isabella Avram, recent eighth-grade graduates from Hamiliton International Middle School and McClure Middle School, respectively, received $2,000 scholarship as the 2022 recipients of the Nico Luiggi Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded to two middle school students each year. Carmen Hagios and Ray Luiggi created the scholarship to honor their son Nico Luiggi, who died at the age of 13 in 2018, two months after he suffered a traumatic brain injury in a rollover collision that also killed two of his friends.

At the time of his death, Nico attended Hamilton International Middle School and delivered newspapers for the Queen Anne & Magnolia News. The scholarship isn’t just awarded based on academic merit. Students must also write a two-page essay talking about their passions in life and plans after high school

as part of the application process. Scholarships go toward tuition expenses at any college, university or vocational training. The scholarship is funded primarily by the family of Nico Luigi, as well as donations from community members. To learn more about the Nico Luiggi Scholarship, go to http://www.nicoluiggi.org.

1. Prepare the grill for direct grilling at 500 F, then preheat a 10-inch cast iron skillet on the grate with the lid closed. 2. Put the bacon in the skillet. Close the lid and cook for 1 to 2 minutes or until browned and crispy around the edges. Transfer to a plate. 3. Add the mushrooms to the skillet. Close the lid and cook, stirring once, for 7 to 9 minutes

or until browned. Transfer to a plate. Season with salt and pepper. 4. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, season the beef with pepper and 4 teaspoons of salt. Using your hands, mix until just incorporated; form into four 1-inch-thick patties with a slight dimple in the center. 5. Put the burgers on the grate. Close the lid and cook, flipping halfway through, for 8 to 10

minutes total for medium, or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center registers 135 F. (If using store-bought ground beef, always cook it to 160 F, or well done.) In the last minute of cooking, top the patties with the cheese to melt and place the rolls cut-side down on the grate to toast. 6. 1. Put the egg in the bowl of a small food processor. Blend until beaten. 2. With the machine running, slowly stream in the oil through the feed tube until emulsified (the mixture thickens). 3. Blend in the garlic and salt. 4. Transfer to an airtight container, refrigerate, and use within 5 days. Troubleshooting: Is your aioli just not coming together, staying thin and runny instead of thickening? You may be streaming in your oil too quickly. But don’t throw out the batch. Instead, pour it into a small cup or bowl, wash and dry the bowl and blade of the food processor, and start again with a fresh egg. Use the previous batch as your “oil.”

Kreiner said, when talking with her patients, they would often share that they wished they had made these healthy changes long before a crisis had upended their lives. Now Kreiner’s work has expanded to support people at any stage of life when they’re looking to feel better. “Things don’t have to be at a breaking point to make a healthy change,” she said. “I want people to know it’s possible to feel better, and that it’s not selfish to care for themselves. It’s actually the best thing you can do for the people around you.” According to her website, the

three key components of selfcompassion are self-kindness, a sense of common humanity and balanced, mindful awareness. Kreiner said that self-compassion can be learned by anyone, and she only wishes that she could have discovered it for herself sooner. That’s why she offers mindful self-compassion courses. Her next online seminar is a six-week class starting on July 14. This program focuses on growing emotional resources and cultivating mindfulness for everyday moments. Participants will practice incorporating compassion into their lives and learn to motivate themselves with kindness rather than criticism. Details can be found at www. HannaKreiner.com/calendar. “We would never speak to other people the way we sometimes speak to ourselves, and don’t we deserve the same kindness that we extend to others?” Kreiner said. Kreiner invites everyone to find her on Instagram @seattleselfcompassion, as well, and reminds everyone that it is never too late to learn self-compassion. “We all deserve compassion,” Kreiner said. “This shift in your relationship to yourself can bring you more peace and transform how you relate to the world.”

“Five Reasons I Wish I Had Learned SelfCompassion Sooner” by Hanna Kreiner 1. I would have spent less time and energy comparing myself to others. Whether I felt “better” or “worse” than someone else, comparing always left me feeling separate and lonely. Self-compassion helps me connect to our common humanity. We share more than what separates us, and we all struggle in life. 2. I would have motivated myself with encouragement and kindness instead of selfcriticism. I thought being hard on myself was the only way to reach my goals, but it mostly made me feel bad and cultivated anxiety and feelings of “not good enough”-ness. Self-compassion cultivates resilience! 3. I would have felt more

ing occupants who are not tenants. After the 20th day following the sale the purchaser has the right to evict occupants who are not tenants by summary proceedings under chapter 59.12 RCW. For tenant-occupied property, the purchaser shall provide a tenant with written notice in accordance with RCW 61.24.060. resilient when I made a mistake or things didn’t go my way. Normal life is full of difficulty, and if I wasn’t so busy beating myself up for not controlling every outcome (an impossible goal!), I could have moved through disappointments and missteps with more clarity and grace.” 4. I would have learned the paradox that when I allow myself to feel “bad” difficult emotions, rather than avoid them, I actually feel relieved and start to feel better faster. Hard feelings are a part of a healthy, full life.” 5. I would have offered myself the approval and support I was often seeking from others. I mistakenly thought that validation could only come from others. Turns out that when I give myself my own encouragement, understanding, and wisdom, that I offer to my friends it can transform how I feel inside, and I am more comfortable in my skin.

SHERMAN, FROM PAGE 1 in the classroom 39 years ago, teaching at a Catholic school in Shoreline, and hadn’t thought to become an administrator or returning to her old school until she was approached almost 30 years ago by a “persuasive pastor,” who convinced her to help the new principal, Pat Durand, get settled at St. Anne and in the community by becoming second in command at the K-8 school. “He saw something that I didn’t even see in myself at the time,” Sherman said. After serving 17 years as vice principal, Sherman took over as principal 12 years ago, and she said she has been blessed with a supportive staff, parents who care about their children’s educations, and great resources. “This is just a fabulous community of parents and teachers,” Sherman said, adding they care for the welfare and education of the kindergarten through eighthgraders who attend. “When they feel loved and welcomed, those kids can learn anything.” Sherman said she believes the

education system has improved through the years, despite changes sometimes influenced by national politics. She said when she first started teaching in the 1970s, education was very “prescriptive,” with teachers having to follow already established curriculum tailored toward education models and methods, regardless of whether those best served students. Now, education and teaching methods are more fluid, geared toward catering to students’ learning styles and their success. “You have a lot more flexibility in how you’re going to administer these standards,” Sherman said. “It allows teachers to use their educational professionalism.” While the challenges differed as a teacher than a principal, Sherman said the most difficult obstacle she experienced in her entire career was guiding the school through the COVID-19 pandemic. She said 2020 and the pandemic changed everything in education, and teachers and administrators had to figure out

the first culinary herb I planted in my garden 11 years ago. Each year it surprises me several times a season by popping up somewhere new. Like the Terminator, it’s never really gone. Monardas, beloved by butterflies and teamakers alike, are known to seed themselves around, but seedlings can be easily removed. On the flip side, a mint plant that refuses to move is the lupine lookalike Baptisia australis. My Baptisia “Carolina Moonlight” is going at full tilt right now, showing off pale yellow spikes in front of a purpleleafed elderberry. The thing is, it’s a bit larger than needed, thank you, and being deciduous, it does nothing for the winter scene. But I’m not moving that baby without a forklift. Baptisia plants form a chunky taproot that can hold water a long time to help it through stints on its native prairie. As a result, the root ball sounds — and feels — like an anvil when your shovel hits it. When I tried to give my friend a division, I thought I was going to need some C-4. I managed a prosciutto-thin sliver,

but it thrives nonetheless at my friend’s house. Rosemary, available in diminutive trailing varieties all the way up to shrubs 5 feet tall and wide, is a nice evergreen choice for a sunny, dry location — sometimes it even blooms twice. Look for varieties that are hardy to zone 8 or below. If you’re shopping for rosemary, don’t be put off by the new tags, however. Botanists now classify rosemary in the sage genus and are calling it Salvia rosmarinus. But so far, it’s still a mint.

how to ensure students learned while everyone stayed safe and, when the time was right, how to reincorporate traditions into the new school day to make the adjustment easier. “There were a lot of tears, but there was a lot of support for one another,” Sherman said. Sherman said she decided this was the right time to retire because one thing she learned from COVID is that time and relationships are precious, and there are other important things she wants to do, like spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren. And Sherman said while she will miss the students, staff and parents, she will still see them. “I’ll still be in the parish, but it’s not the same as getting to be here day to day,” she said. St. Anne first opened its doors in Queen Anne with 150 students on Sept. 4, 1923, and it will resume this fall with more than 250. Sherman said she is confident St. Anne School will continue to thrive under the leadership of Heidi Austin, who will take over as principal.
