Seattle Fashion from the city to the slopes

What would school closures mean to neighborhoods? By Laura Marie Rivera Contributing Writer

Seattle Public Schools has a $131 billion budget deficit on the horizon and is looking for ways to close the gap. Since SPS is also struggling with a large decline in enrollment, they seem to be considering closing some of the neighborhood schools to help save money. Many families are concerned about what that means for their students. According to the district website, Madison Park’s McGilvra Elementary School has less than 300 students enrolled. As one of the smaller schools in the district, some parents worry

that their school may be one of the first to be closed. After last fall’s Well-Resourced School meetings and being frustrated by the lack of true engagement, the PTA made the decision to be more proactive in promoting the school and encouraging enrollment. Alice Appleton is the parent of a McGilvra student and attended the district’s virtual meeting regarding well-resourced schools. During the breakout discussion, she and other parents discussed what role they could play in marketing the schools. They felt it was important to promote the idea of choosing SPS over moving

Tara Clark and Elizabeth McQuiston are Seattle fashion icons and entrepreneurs. The duo has teamed up to offer a Ski Chalet Galentine’s Event on Feb. 15. Their star power and shared attitude of promoting beauty in all forms is sure to melt winter hearts. Having started their businesses on the Seattle side, they are each bringing their flair for fashion to Bellevue. Clark is a renowned photographer who has turned her eye to high end ski wear. This season, she opened a winter pop-up shop at Bellevue Square. Queen Anne shoppers likely recognize McQuiston from her years on the Avenue and style offerings from Willa- A Lifestyle Shop. And those styles will soon be available when her second store opens in Bellevue this Spring. Inspired by her mother who worked in women’s fashion, McQuiston developed her own eye for fashion when she lived in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles after college. When it came time to raise her own family, she decided to return to the Queen Anne neighborhood where she had grown up. And after a short time as a stayat-home mom, she bought a local building and business so that she could give women’s FASHION Page 3Æ

McGraw Street Bridge closed for seismic retrofit By Mary Chapman Cole

The McGraw Street Bridge was closed on Jan. 29 in order to receive seismic retrofitting. The City of Seattle has funded this construction work thanks to the Levy to Move Seattle, which was approved by voters in 2015. Detour signs will be placed on 2nd Avenue North and Nob Hill Avenue North. The two-lane McGraw Street bridge (or the “Gully Bridge” as we called it growing up) was constructed over the Wolf Creek Ravine in 1936. Although it wears its 88 years well, the foundation of the bridge needs reinforcing to better withstand any earthquake activity. The current construction project will take approximately 8 months to complete, and will include: installing carbon fiber wrapping around the bridge's crossbeams, arches, and columns; SCHOOL from Page 1Æ to other districts, private school, or homeschooling. “It was remarkable to me that we were a diverse group of community members (multiple races, neighborhoods, kids ages represented) and this idea resonated with everyone in the group,” Appleton said. Meg Bartley is the president of McGilvra PTA. She says that in addition to a beautiful building, green space and clean air, McGilvra represents the community. “We also have a strong community history and presence, and it’s critical that we maintain that for our current and future students. We truly believe that neighborhood schools are a vital part of a strong community,” she said. The principal and parents of Queen Anne Elementary brought a similar concern to the last Queen Anne Farmers Market. They are an option school which means that they do not have an attendance boundary and are open to students from all over the city. QAE uses a creative school approach that stresses project-

This is the second bridge to span this part of the ravine over the last 110 years. The first was a wooden trestle bridge built in 1914 to complete the boulevard around the hill, part of the original based learning and social emotional learning. Their guiding question is, “How are we making a difference in the world?” Students will have the opportunity to request to attend QAE when open enrollment starts in February. There are other SPS option schools that focus on technology, dual-language, and advanced learning. Since some school board members have suggested closing the option schools first, these schools are also committed to connecting with the communities to share the information about their unique learning environments. parks plan designed by the Olmsted Brothers. By 1935, the wooden McGraw Street bridge had become alarmingly rickety and warranted a full replacement. Fortunately, the current bridge was constructed with more robust materials and won't need such drastic intervention. It is a designated city landmark along with the entire Queen Anne Boulevard. McQuiston is regularly seen around the neighborhood sporting looks that are effortlessly chic, whether she is at happy hour or the school playground. The clothes at Willa embody a lifestyle with less fuss and prioritize comfort without sacrificing style. “We’re not trendy, we’re classic with a badass edge that makes us undeniably cool,” she says. Clark embodies that same commitment to quality, comfort, and style with her line of TaraShakti apparel. The company’s mission is to ignite powerful moments of positivity, possibility, and connection enabling every woman’s unique star power to shine. And shine they do. When skiers hit the slopes in these bright onesies, people definitely stop to take notice and smile and the confident women that ski by. Clark says this has been the most challenging, rewarding, and forever changing experience of her life. “It has allowed me to meet, work with, and create life-changing connections that I carry with me and have made me a better person. The suits and fanny packs are handmade in Kathmandu and a portion of the proceeds goes to support the Northwest Sherpa Association and the Ivy Center at Cherry Hill’s Swedish Medical Center. Clark says that it’s her dream to one day design winter athletic wear for Team USA Olympic. But for now, she says she is “thrilled to have people discover the warmth, comfort, performance, and stunning fit of our sits.” As a sponsor, TaraShakti suits will be put to the test at this year’s Big Ski Skijoring Showdown in Montana. And viewers can watch for the TaraShakti Mob Boss dance video starring one of Macklemore’s dancers coming later this Spring. McQuiston and Clark will be hosting a combined Galentine’s Day event at Willa 2213 Queen Anne Ave N. on Feb. 15, from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. They will have Aperol apres-ski drinks, catered bites, and sparkling conversation to go with their beautiful fashions. They look forward to connecting with shoppers and future friends at the event . “Mostly, I am excited about all the people we get to meet through TaraShakti, and have them shine bright on the mountains, and in the city wearing our suits,” Clark said. Keep moving: The power of functional movement exercise

T

here comes a day for most of us, especially after years of deskwork, when we get up and make a sound. A groan, a creak, or a crack pops up, either from our knee, hip, or mouth, both unbidden and seemingly unavoidable.

MOVE IT OR LOSE IT The same way our mind gets stuck in mental grooves, our body, ever looking for efficiencies, gets stuck in physical patterns of movement – or stiffness. If you walk with a purse or backpack slung on the same shoulder for a year or two, expect your opposite hip or knee to have something to say about the extra load soon enough. Conversely, the side that was not activated will become weaker from disuse. Your Erica Browne Grivas body has determined its resources Your Best Life were better spent on muscles and joints you are using. I still don’t know exactly how it happened, but I developed a pattern like that at some point, somewhere in the Covid era, where much more sitting happened, and as hours reduced at my part-time nursery job, much less carrying of bags of potting soil. With the city’s proscription that we stay close to home, even my dog’s walks had gotten shorter. We weren’t hiking at Twin Falls or driving for a nice adventure at Marymoor dog park. Then one day we did go hiking – after months of inactivity – and the next day, my left knee really hurt. As I worked out in the months following, I realized the muscles around my right hip were nearly locked. I wasn’t able to do a full squat. After physical therapy, doing lots of sidekicks and clamshells, and relearning how to walk in a balanced way, sit with my feet flat on the ground rather than crossed, and to not lock my knees while standing, my knee is much more resilient. I can do a full squat again, and it feels great to have that freedom of movement – it just feels right. I have my “hip hinge” back. If you look at many cultures, squatting is a way of life. It’s normal to be able to go all the way down with your feet on the floor – many can even hold that position for hours, working, eating, chatting with friends. Squats and glute bridge movements help support functions like using the restroom and getting up from a chair. When you think about it, you’d like to be able to move under your own power, pain-free, as long as possible, right? You probably want to be ready to play with grandkids. The longer you keep moving, the longer you are telling your body “I still need to lift, run or jump!” Prolonged sitting can lead to “inactivated” glutes for instance, which means they are not ready when you need speed or to get up a hill, making your knees or hips take added pressure. The answer, exercise specialists, say, is to just keep moving. There are certain movements to focus on, though. Functional movements are the ones we need for ideal balanced strength that gives us the most freedom of mobility. You want to be able to push and pull both with your legs and your arms, so think push-ups/planks, rows for arms and squats, deadlifts and kicks for your legs. You also want to be able to get up off the ground unassisted. You may need to work up to doing a full Turkish get-up, where you lie down and basically sit up to a standing position, usually holding a kettle bell. Doing single leg and arm work when you are ready can help reveal and even out imbalances. As always, find the modifications you need and check GRIVAS Page 8Æ
