Sharing a positive message through literature
Last Saturday, Queen Anne Book Company welcomed the public for a book signing with Queen Anne’s own Jessixa Bagley. Bagley is an author/ illustrator and a long-time resident of Queen Anne. Her latest children’s book, “Maurice” from Chronicle Books, tells the tale of an accordion-playing dog in Paris. ‘It’s about the creative process, examining how your passions align with the systems of the world, how loss and sadness can a ect other parts of your life,’ she said. In the book, which she read to delighted listeners, the title character has a bit of an existential crisis when he can no longer earn enough money to care for his bird friends. Bagley assures readers the book has a happy ending for the furry and feathered friends.

As a long-term Magnolian who predates Discovery Park, and having enjoyed overnights at a grade school classmate/ friend living in an officer’s row house on Montana Circle at “the fort,” and actually having played on the sandy bluff above Perkins Lane, which most now know is precipitously/ perilously eroded and very much not accessible to frolic, I am a proponent in wholehearted agreement with Friends of Discovery Park President Philip Vogelzang’s commentary regarding City of Seattle’s illsuited DP housing proposal that must remain blocked. Since the construction of the fort did not include the
typical infrastructure needed for neighborhood urban living, it is too much of a stretch to spend excessively to develop too little a quantity of low-income and homeless housing. Given that this property was simply transferred to the city in 2012 after the fort closed, it is the most logical, natural and cost-
effective to allow this acreage to be absorbed into Discovery Park. More residents, for the extended future and at less cost, will benefit from the access to the open space than the few who might, and that’s a big might, benefit from the isolated housing. This is not just a dollars and sense (pun intended) consideration; this land is native to the area and should have its habitat restored and preserved.
Discovery Park is a legacy to be nurtured and improved, and this is a no-brainer to choose to add, not subtract, from this invaluable green space.

1 large zucchini
1 tablespoon olive oil

1 medium tomato, sliced
1 — 7 1/2-inch loaf focaccia bread (about 12 ounces)
¼ cup reduced-fat mayonnaise

½ cup loosely packed fresh basil leaves
1. Preheat oven to 450 F. Cut eggplant and zucchini crosswise into 1⁄4-inch-thick slices.
Combine eggplant, zucchini and oil in a mixing bowl. Press garlic into mixing bowl using a garlic press; toss to coat. Season with salt and black pepper, if desired.
2. Arrange vegetables in a single layer on a stoneware bar pan. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender and deep golden brown. Remove from oven to a cooling rack; cool slightly.
3. Meanwhile, cut mozzarella and tomato into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Cut bread in half horizontally. Spread mayonnaise on cut surfaces.
4. To assemble sandwich, arrange basil leaves, vegetables, tomato slices, and mozzarella slices over bottom half of bread. Top with top half of bread. Cut into slices and serve.

YES OR NO: MOW IN MAY?
The biggest crop in the country isn’t grown on farms. It’s our lawns, and collectively it covers 2 percent of the land in the country, amounting to 40 million acres, according to Beecityusa. org. So, when looking to expand habitat for declining pollinators like bees, many ecologists see our lawns as our biggest lever.
Hence, the No-Mow May movement, a mouthful adopted from a United Kingdom citizen science group called Plantlife, now gaining traction by adoption in pledged pollinator-friendly Bee Cities and Bee Campuses and in some cities that have changed their weed ordinances. The idea behind it is that cutting the grass in early spring en-

dangers vulnerable pollinators and beneficial insects nesting and seeking forage. The majority of bees nest in the ground or in stalks of overwintering plants. Letting the grass stretch while some clover or native violets bloom can go a long way to boost those dwindling populations.
Studies indicate biodiversity jumps with each skipped mow, drawing multiple bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects, beecityusa.org/no-mow-may. Other benefits include lower water use -- taller grass sends down longer, more efficient roots, fewer pests and of course, saving time, money, as well as air and noise pollution from gas-powered mowers.
Our love affair with lawns
Of course, as with the “rewilding” and “leave the leaves” movements, an intentionally messy lawn isn’t an easy sell to homeowner’s associations, some neighbors and government officials. Velvety manicured lawns are central to the mass-marketed ideal of an American home landscape, which took hold in the early 1900s.
Why is this an issue? Besides removing habitat for pollinators, a traditionally managed lawn is an overall a net-loss environmentally. When you add chemicals, it makes soil less healthy, dependent on fertilizers and pesticides to thrive, pushing a lawn from a wasted economic opportunity to one that negates biodiversity from the ground up — something we really can’t afford in the current situation.
Alarmed by the rapid decline of the European honeybee due to pesticide use and other pressures, people are looking for ways to welcome pollinators back — in pocket gardens, public parks and pollinator corridors. A prime motivator is that bees and other pollinators, from butterflies to bats, are responsible for one out of every three bites of food we eat, according to usda.gov/ peoples-garden/pollinators.
But while honeybees pollinate crops and mainly non-native plants, ecologists are even more concerned about the loss of native bee species, which play a larger role supporting the native plant ecosystem.
Questions about No-Mow May
Is skipping mowing in May the answer, however? Washington Post writer Jessica Damiano suggests it’s a stopgap measure that can do more harm than good, largely because a) it can let weeds

take hold that are harder to remove later, and b) the pollinators need permanent homes to return to, not just a onemonth Airbnb stay, and c) the weeds that are generally in lawns, like dandelions, are not as nutrient-rich as native plants, washingtonpost. com/lifestyle.
A side note: No-Mow April is also a thing because in some parts of the country, and maybe in your yard, the bees wake up earlier than May. So, if you try this, watch when they wake up or ask your local county extension office.
As in many things, the answer is probably somewhere in the gray middle. If you are keeping your lawn, and you can save some pollinators that month, that’s a short-term win, but undoubtedly the more efficient answer is to break up with our lawns and build some long-term habitat.
How can your lawn earn its keep?
Some on-ramps to saying goodbye to your lawn, and making it more environmentally helpful include:
Add in some pollinatorattracting spring bulbs in the winter and don’t mow until after that foliage dies back.
Dig up a patch and make it a meadow — this takes some research and time to establish — or a pollinator-friendly garden bed, a rain garden or a thyme or clover lawn.
Let one section go wild, and encourage and add native plants within, weeding out invasives.
In terms of maintenance, switch to electric mowers and trimmers, hand pull weeds instead of using pesticides, use organic compost as fertilizer, water deeply and less often to encourage deep roots and set your blade a little higher.
Incorporate plants that draw beneficial insects and pollinators year-round in the rest of your garden.
Add a shallow water basin with pebbles, and leave some leaves, rocks, sticks, and snags to support overwintering creatures.

“I think this season it’s going to be a really full market with a lot of di erent foods and products to choose from, which I’m really excited about,” Cohn said.

As in previous years, a harvest market it slated from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 18.

“It’s sort of the end of the harvest-season bounty, and it’s also the weekend before anksgiving, so it’s also a good time to do your anksgiving shopping,”
Cohn said.
Cohn said she expects this year’s market to be even busier than the last few seasons. Seattle’s Neighborhood Farmers Markets organization, which operates eight of the farmers market in the city, had to cancel Magnolia’s market in 2020 because of COVID, but the market has been slowly returning to pre-pandemic popularity and numbers. Last year was the market’s strongest year, but Cohn expects this one to be even better.

“We’re expecting it to be really bustling and full of the product people like to nd at the market every year,” Cohn said.

She said last year, because of a wet spring, some of the early summer seasonal produce, such as berries and stone fruit, was
late to arrive at the market, but it doesn’t look like that will be a problem this season. Still, Cohn encouraged people to make repeat trips to the market in case their favored items aren’t available on the rst visit.
“We try to encourage people to come back in July or August because the market really lls up a lot,” she said.

Among the new vendors Cohn said she is excited about is Glendale Shepherd Farms, from Whidby Island, which specializes in sheep’s milk cheeses, yogurt and lamb product.

“ ey’re yogurt is probably one of my favorite foods I’ve ever eaten,” she said. “It’s just really exceptional.”
Cohn said another new vendor is Loki Fish company, a small Alaskan sher operation, which also sells at Fishermen’s Terminal.
She said she also is excited to welcome Ca e Clutch, a German bakery from north Seattle that sells pretzels, breads, pastries and more.
“I really want the market to be a place where people can shop for their groceries and buy their produce, bread and cheese and pickles for the week and get those basics,” Cohn said. “I think that this will be very doable this year with the produce that we have.”
Cohn said it is important for people to note that people can use food assistance program bene ts at the market. People who use SNAP will even receive an amount match from the market to buy even more produce.
Lastly, Cohn said the markets also will feature a variety of activities for people to enjoy, including zucchini races one week later in the summer, and tasting or cooking demonstrations. For more information about the market, go to seattlefarmersmarkets.org/mfm.
